Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. Since April, 1962, Shell Oil Co. has operated a peripheral line-drive waterflood of the 10.750-ft lower Tuscaloosa (Cretaceous) Denkman sand in the Little Creek field. Located in southwestern Mississippi in the lower Tuscaloosa trend, the field was discovered by Shell in Jan., 1958. Among the largest in the trend, the accumulation is controlled stratigraphically and occurs in an extensive series of alluvial-point bar deposits across a nose that dips gently to the south. The crude oil is 39" API gravity and was highly undersaturated at initial conditions. Early production behavior indicated a depletion drive with slight water influx; primary recovery wm estimated to be 25 million bbl, or 24.5 percent of stock-tank oil originally in place. A.s a result of a favorable mobility ratio and remarkably uniform rock properties, the volumetric sweep eficiency in the waterflood has exceeded 90 percent. Despite the high connate water saturation (56 percent), the displacement efficiency by water injection has been quite efficient, contrary to traditional concepts. Based on observed field flood-out performance, ultimate recovery is calculated to be 46 million bbl. As anticipated, the production rate began declining during 1964 due to a continu ing reducrion in the number of producing wells as flood fronts advanced across the field. Cumulative recovery as of Jan., 1968, was 44.8 million bbl; waterflood operations ~hould be complete by 1970. Introduction Most waterfloods described in reservoir engineering literature involve pattern operations, the most common of which is the five-spot pattern. Only occasiona'lly are linear drives described, even though there probably are increasing numbers being put into operation. Increasing use of linear floods may reflect the accelerating trend towards early application of fluid-injection programs when linear drives are more efficient, as was the case at Little Creek. However. the Little Creek operation is unusual in several respects. It is one of a few successful waterfloods conducted in sands with connate water saturations approaching 60 percent, and it is among the deepest successful water-floods being operated anywhere. Development The Little Creek field was discovered in Jan., 1958, in the lower Tuscaloosa trend in southwestern Mississippi (Fig. 1). The discovery well, Shell-Lemann No. 1, was drilled on a seismic closure about 2 miles southeast of lower Tuscaloosa production at Sweetwater. The well was completed in the Denkman sand at 10,752 ft, and on initial potential it flowed 588 BOPD of 39" API crude on a %+-in. choke; psi was 730 and GOR was 442:l. Development proceeded rapidly on 40-acre spacing, and by the end of 1958 the field was producing approximately 9,100 B/D from 56 wells. Almost all this production came from the northern half of the field. The southern part was discovered in Nov., 1958, at a location almost 2 miles from previously established production. Subsequent drilling established an apparent conneotion about half a mile wide between the twd areas. Development of the field was practically complete by 1961 with the drilling of 155 producers and 35 dry holes. Some early wells were completed open hole but moslt are completed with casing cemented through the productive interval and perforated for production. Geology The lower Tuscaloosa structure in this area is a north-south nose with maximum dips of about 2" on the flanks. There is no discernible faulting at the producing horizon. Productive limits of the field are shown in Fig. 2, which is contoured on a marker just above the main productive zone. A common water level at 10,415 ft subsea was logged at both the northwest and southeast ends of the field. There is a gross oil column of nearly 100 ft (Fig. 2). Since there is less than 40 ft of closure, it is apparent that bhe accumubtion is controlled stratigraphically, being limited by a sand pinch-out across the creslt of the nose. The total produc-

Pillar stability continues to be a significant concern in multiple-level mining conditions, particularly for deep mines when pillars are not stacked or the thickness of interburden between mining levels is thin. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently conducting research to investigate the stability of pillars in multiple-level limestone mines. In this study, FLAC3D models were created to investigate the effect of interburden thickness, the degree of pillar offset between mining levels, and in situ stress conditions on pillar stability at various depths of cover. The FLAC3D models were validated through in situ monitoring that was conducted at a multiple-level stone mine. The critical interburden thickness required to minimize the interaction between the mining levels on top-level pillar stability was explored, where the top level mine was developed first followed by the bottom level mine. The model results showed that there is an interaction between numerous factors that control the stability of pillars in multiple- level conditions. A combination of these factors may lead to various degrees of pillar instabilities. The highest degree of local pillar instability occurred when pillar overlap ranges between 10 and 70%. On the contrary, the highest degree of stability occurs when the pillars are stacked, the underlying assumption is that the interburden between mining levels is elastic (never fails). Generally, for depths of cover investigated in this study, the stability of top-level pillars shallower than 100 m (328 ft) or with interburden thicknesses greater than 1.33 times the roof span—16 m (52.4 ft) in this study—does not appear significantly impacted by pillar offset. The results of this study improve understanding of multiple-level interactions and advances the ultimate goal of reducing the risk of pillar instability in underground stone mines.

Generally, the mining costs reported for the large open-pit operations in the United States and South America lie within the range of $0.20 to $0.30 per ton of material moved. (These operations have strip- ping ratios ranging from 1.5 to 4.0.) Productivities for the larger North American properties are in excess of 200 tons of material per man shift, while those for the South American operations are less than 200 tons per man shift. The most significant variations in cost are in the categories of haulage and general mine cost. Haulage costs vary, as expected, according to the mine elevation, pit profile, crusher location, and accessibility of a dump area, and general cost variations depend largely on the overhead cost items included in this category. Drilling and Blasting Practice The majority of open-pit copper mine production drilling is performed by rotary drills. Hole diameter varies from 6 in. to 12 in., with 9-in. holes being most common, and penetration rates vary from 35 ft to 60 ft per hour.

This study utilized experimental and numerical simulation methods to investigate and analyze the atomization characteristics of three internal air–water mixed atomizers under different operating conditions. By comparing the research results, the effective dust control working parameters for the application of the selected atomizer in the engineering field were determined. Firstly, the atomization characteristics of the three atomizers were studied using a customized experimental system. The results indicated that nozzle 2 had a wide atomization range, a small atomization distance, and small droplet size; nozzle 3 had a narrow atomization range, large droplet size, and fast atomization speed; and nozzle 1 not only had a large atomization range but also could produce droplets of dry mist size with fast atomization speed, meeting the dust reduction requirements of the Majiliang Coal Preparation Plant. Secondly, Fluent software was used to simulate the atomization process and particle size distribution of the three internal mixed atomizers, determining the working conditions of the atomizers, the required number of atomizers, and the application angle of the atomizers in the internal mixed dust removal system. Finally, the atomized dust control system was applied on-site, achieving a total dust removal efficiency of 90.72% and a respirable dust removal efficiency of 89.75%.

Current design guidelines for the surface catalysed oxidation of Fe(II) on Fe(OH)3 (Ochre) in passive mine water treatment systems are based largely on empirical data as the details of rates and mechanisms have not fully been revealed. Also the effects of elevated carbonate concentrations, typical of many UK minewaters, on the surface catalysed oxidation rate are unclear. In order to move away from empirical design and towards sound engineering that is based on geochemical and hydrological understanding it is necessary to quantify these reaction rates. In this study the effects of Fe(OH)3 and carbonate on the rate of Fe(II) oxidation by dissolved oxygen have been investigated with an aim to delineate the reaction mechanism. Experiments were conducted under well-controlled conditions. Preliminary results indicate that the surface catalysed reaction is an order of magnitude faster at pH ~6.4 with 200 mg/l Fe(OH)3 than the homogeneous rate and is dominated by an elevated rate of removal and oxidation of Fe(II) from the solution phase. It is also apparent that the oxidation rate of actual adsorbed Fe(II) is substantially retarded with respect to the homogeneous rate. Carbonates were not shown to affect the surface rate within the bounds of this preliminary study.

Lateritic gold has been the object of study only for a very few years, though nuggets have been mentioned in earlier works even as early as 1984 by Hartt in Brazil. In Mato Grosso State, lateritisation is intense, as is common in all tropical forest areas of the world. Exploration has revealed the presence of recoverable "nugget gold" of variable sizes (30 - 200 gms) but frequently of good size (0 - 40 gms), especially near Cuiaba and Alta Floresta regions. In both of them the host system is a lateritised breccia indicative of a fault or shear zone breccia, though in different lithological domains. The Cuiaba occurrences are phyllitic and show a profile as follows, from top to bottom: 1) Compact ferralite crust. 2) Oolitic to pisolitic compact crust (+ some gold). 3) Mottled concretionary laterite crust. 4) Lateritised "eluvial material" (gold nuggets). 5) Mottled patchy to banded laterite. 6) Banded lateritised phyllite with lenticular to banded goethite. 7) Altered red goethitic phyllite, with quartz veins (+ fine gold). 8) Unaltered grey phyllite with quartz veins (Protore). The Alta Floresta-Juruena River occurrences are volcano-sedimentary and show a profile as follows: 1) Deep brown siltitic, argillaceous and arenaceous material with organic matter (+ gold). 2) Modular and concretionary laterite, compact and indurated, with arsenophyrite in quartz fragments (gold nuggets). 3) Band with silty-clayey matrix and arenaceous in nature. 4) Bedrock meta-arcosian arenite. 5) Volcano-sedimentary with rhyodacites and andesitic basalts, with intercalations of arkosic and greywacke nature. Breccias and quartz veins, and granites associated in different portions (Protore).

Oil was successfully injected into the tuyeres of the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace. Determinations were made for the minimum oil addition necessary to permit the maximum available blast temperature of 2,250° F. and the maximum oil rates at blast temperatures of 1,900°, 2,000°, and 2,100° F. From these tests, the upper and lower levels of high-temperature heat input, which limit the smoothly operating furnace, were established. Substantial coke saving was realized with maximum oil injection. Oil-to-coke replacement ratios have been calculated for various conditions, and oil is compared with natural gas and moisture in somewhat general terms. A study of the effect of variations in slag volume and basicity on the sulfur content of the metal at high sulfur loads was made.

When the United States Geological Survey began operations at the coal-testing plant erected at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition at St. Louis, Mo., in 1904, it had already outlined a comprehensive plan for the systematic study of coals, lignites, and other mineral fuels with reference to their suitability for particular purposes and the methods by which they could be utilized most efficiently. Recognizing the need of information on the relative economy of producer gas as compared with steam for power purposes and the lack of comparable tests of American coals in the gas producer, the Geological Survey undertook investigations of the merits of different coals as producer fuel for the purpose of promoting efficiency in the utilization of the nation's fuel supplies. These investigations were carried on at St. Louis, Mo., and, later, at Norfolk, Va., and Pittsburg, Pa. The aet of Congress approved May 16, 1910, transferred the fueltesting work being carried on by the Geological Survey to the Bureau of Mines. This bureau is conducting producer-gas tests at P~ttsburg, Pa., and is publishing and distributing reports relating to all the fuel tests made by the Survey. These investigations into the possibility of generating producer gas in a commercial way for power purposes from the various fuels of the country have been associated with steaming, briquetting, coking, and other tests, all of which supplemented an examination into the nature, extent, and distribution of the fuels. The tests have all been made with carefully selected representative samples and carload lots of materials procured specially for the purpose by experienced collectors.

The investigations recorded in this bulletin were conducted by the Pacific Coke & Coal Co. in cooperation with the United States Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington. They cover one phase of a comprehensive investigation to determine whether coals from an extensive, undeveloped area of Pierce County, Wash., can be used in the manufacture of coke for the iron blast furnace. The completed investigation had three parts: (1) A geological survey of the coal property, (2) washing and crushing tests of the coals, and (3) coking and by-product tests. The geological survey, which was not conducted in cooperation with the Bureau of Mines and the University of Washington, included systematic tracing of the coal beds by test holes throughout the property, except some portions covered by an impenetrable layer of glacial drift. By this means all of the beds were correlated, their thickness and general character were determined, and tonnage estimates were made. Only such parts of the survey results as are necessary to a full explanation of the investigations described herein are included in this bulletin.

"Two different instability mechanisms of electromagnetically levitated bodies are analyzed. The first is due to the virtual coupling between the electric current passing through the magnetic system and the variation of position of the body. This mechanism can result in unstable mass center oscillations of a levitated solid body. Another type of instabilities may occur because of the coupling between the motion and the electric currents induced in the body. This effect can cause a spontaneous rotation of the body setting in as the frequency of the alternating magnetic field exceeds certain critical threshold depending on the configuration of the field. This instability can be suppressed by an axial steady magnetic field of strength comparable to that of the levitating field. 1 IntroductionAn alternating magnetic field interacting with eddy currents induced in a conducting body causes repulsion between the body and the coil generating the field. Besides, the eddy currents provide a contactless heating of the body. In such a way metallic samples can be levitated and melted without a contacting crucible. This technique allows to avoid contamination of the melt with container material and so to achieve a considerable super-cooling of the melt before it solidifies. Nowadays electromagnetic levitation is widely used in material research for measuring of the thermophysical properties of molten metals (2) .It has been observed since early fifties when the first experiments on the electromagnetic levitation were done that under certain circumstances solid levitated samples start to rotate or oscillate [l]. Surface oscillations can appear in addition when the sample is melted. Such phenomena are undesirable because they often result in failure of the levitation. Recently we showed that rotational as well as oscillatory instabilities can have electrodynamic origin related to additional eddy currents induced by motion of the body in an alternating magnetic field [3] , [4].In the first part of the present paper we analyze another possible cause of oscillatory instability due to the coupling between the electric current passing trough the magnetic system with variation of the position of the levitated body. The second part of the paper deals with the origin and suppression of rotational instability in a uniform alternating magnetic field."

The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and, the results are described in this report.

The experiences of Canex Placer Ltd. in establishing vegetation on a lead-zinc tailing pond are presented, hoping others with similar challenges will be benefited. History The tailing ponds are the result of 23 years of mining and milling operations, which ceased in August 1970. Roughly 7.9 million tons of lead-zinc ore were removed in that time. The ponds are located between Salmo River and B.C. Highway 3, about 8 miles north of Nelway near the Canada-U.S. border.

A corrosão ocorre devido à deterioração de um material pela ação química ou eletroquímica em meio corrosivo, sujeito ou não a esforços mecânicos, causando modificações indesejáveis, tais como perda de massa, alterações estruturais e variações químicas. O aço inoxidável austenítico AISI 304L é utilizado em grande escala pelas indústrias por apresentar baixo custo e boa resistência à corrosão decorrente da camada de passivação. A passividade dos aços inoxidáveis em eletrólito com íons de cloreto é destruída em pontos ou áreas localizadas. Neste trabalho foi analisado, por meio de ensaios eletroquímicos, a resistência à corrosão do aço AISI 304L. Foi utilizada gaiola catódica em chapa de aço inoxidável 316, com dimensões de 0,8 mm de espessura, 112 mm de diâmetro, furos de diâmetro de 25 mm de altura e 8 mm uniformemente distribuída, com um distância de 9,2 mm entre furos. Os tratamentos térmicos foram realizados a 700, 800 e 900ºC, respectivamente. Os resultados indicam que a resistência à corrosão das amostras tratadas diminuiu, devido a precipitação de nitretos quando são submetidas a processos em altas temperaturas.

Aliar qualidade do produto final e otimização dos custos de produção é o que toda indústria de componentes mecânicos almeja. Um dos problemas enfrentado na produção de eixos automotivos é o surgimento das distorções de formas, e saber as causas dessas distorções vem se tornando cada vez mais imprescindíveis. Dentre os processos de fabricação, o tratamento térmico é conhecido como uma etapa da produção que potencializa os efeitos dos potenciais de distorção acumulados ao longo da cadeia. As tensões residuais são consideradas um dos principais potenciais de distorção e, por isso, é de grande importância o seu entendimento. Sendo assim, o presente artigo, inserido no âmbito do projeto "Investigation and improvement of a manufacturing process chain from cold drawing processes to induction hardening", realiza uma análise das distorções e da distribuição das tensões residuais após a têmpera por indução e uma análise das tensões residuais após o processo de retífica durante a fabricação de eixos automotivos de aço ABNT 1045. Foram variados parâmetros nos processos de trefilação e têmpera por indução. A partir dos resultados obtidos, foi possível verificar a influência da profundidade de camada temperada, onde a maior camada apresentou, em média, maiores distorções.

"There seems to be some confusion between the terms carbon black and lamp black, although in American lampblack is generally understood to be a soot formed by the smudge process. In this process oil, coal tar, resin or some solid, or carbonaceous substance is burned in an insufficient quantity of air, while on the other hand carbon black is a product resulting from the incomplete combustion of gas and is deposited by actual contact of flame upon a metallic surface.The various carbons, such as gas retort coke, oil retort coke, graphite, carbon black, lampblack, vine black, wood-pulp,black, willow charcoal, and blacks made from refuse material such as leather have different characteristics as to flocculence strength of color, and physical structure. These blacks are made by one of the following methods:(1) Formation by direct contact of a flame upon a depositing surface.(2) Production by combustion of an oil, tar, etc., in an inadequate supply of air; the soot is allowed to slowly settle out on the floors and the walls of the collecting chambers.(3) Carbonization of solids and subsequent reduction to a state of small subdivision.(4) Production by heating carbonaceous vapors or gases to a decomposition temperature by external heating with or without air in the forming chamber. This is usually referred to as cracking or thermal decomposition."

An account of a new method of investigating the electrical .properties J the earth's crust is presented. The method, called AFMAG, employs, as a source, natural alternating magnetic fields of audio and sub-audio frequencies. Measurements of the distortion of these fields caused by geological features are made with the aid of search coil detectors at several discrete frequencies. Many results of field surveys made with the method are presented and they illustrate its advantages and limitations when applied to the search for massive sulphide mineralization. The advantages far outweigh the limitations and in fact indicate that a major breakthrough in geophysical exploration technique and instrumentation has been made.

The New York State Department of Transportation recently commenced highway widening and drainage improvement projects in Clarence and Amherst, NY. Drainage improvements including the installation of storm sewer lines required excavation to a depth of 2.5 m (8.2 ft). In September 2002, NYSDOT stopped further blasting when 800 ppm CO was detected in the basement of a house near the blasting site. At the insistence of NYSDOT, the general contractor developed a new blast plan with the assistance of an environmental consultant. The plan provided for the installation of multi-gas monitors in buildings of special concern and/or with basements and residential type CO monitors in all other buildings within 100m (330 ft) of the blast. The multi-gas monitors would be remotely monitored. The plan provided action levels which would ensure public safety. The blast design was also modified to allow for better venting of CO. Blasts were limited to 20 ft lengths. The overburden was to be removed from the rock and blasting mats put in place to prevent flyrock. Approximately twenty feet of trench adjacent to the blast was left open to allow ground movement and gas release. The use of CO monitors was effective to alert occupants of a building to the presence of CO. The most effective appeared to be the residential type CO alarms with digital readouts. They were simple and easy to use and allowed the public to participate in the process. False alarms were repeatedly received with the more sophisticated instrumentation. Residential type CO monitors are preferable to warn people near blast sites. More sophisticated instrumentation should be avoided unless personnel are experienced in its use. A general overview of the blasting and monitoring is presented and discussed. The use and effectiveness of residential type CO monitors and multi-gas monitors are discussed.

THE shatter cut, or burn cut as it is often called, is one in which the centre of the round is almost reamed out by drilling holes so close together that the blasting of a few holes shatters the rock embraced by all of them. The idea of shattering the centre of a face by shooting holes drilled parallel to one another is not new. Some miners have used this method for years past, when drilling quartz or a face near timber. But, they followed the age-old practice of first blasting the cut, then the square-up. It was not thought possible to shoot both together. In the case of machine men, the two largest contributors to silicosis are dust from drilling and dust from blasting. It follows, then, that material reduction of exposure to either constitutes an important step in lessening the incidence o silicosis. It was? the hope of being able to do away with the necessity of the men having to return early to a face, through dust concentrations of 60,000 to 80,000 particles per cubic centimeter, that aroused interest "in the shatter cut at McIntyre. Efforts to this end were successful. Now, with this kind of cut, all holes of a round are shot simultaneously.

The creep behavior of an aluminum alloy hardened with a finely dispersed phase of aluminum oxide was investigated. The as-extruded alloy shows an approximate steady-state creep in which the creed rate depends exponentially on the applied stress. The activation energy of creeb is abbroximately 150,000 cal per mole. The recrystallized alloy shows no steady-state creep. ONE method of improving the creep resistance of a metal is to introduce a finely dispersed second phase into the metal matrix. The improvement of the creep resistance has been qualitatively explained by assuming that the dispersed second-phase particles act as obstacles to dislocation motion. If the main effect of second-phase particles is simply to hinder dislocation motion then it is possible to derive a high-temperature creep equation for a dispersion-hardened alloy in a straightforward manner. In the Appendix of this paper such an equation is derived from a creep model which works very well for pure metals. Recently, F. V. Lenel has fabricated, for the first time, powder extrusions of aluminum-aluminum oxide in a large-grained recrystallized form. This alloy, designated as MD 2100, consists of a fine dispersion of aluminum oxide plates in a matrix of commercial purity aluminum. A considerable amount of investigation has been carried out concerning the microstructure and physical properties of this alloy.&apos; ) The aluminum oxide is present in the form of flakes 130A units thick and 0.3 u on edge. They are dispersed in the aluminum matrix with an average spacing of approximately 0.5 jx. The spacing varies in the range of 0.05 to 1.5 µ. The alloy structure is extremely stable at high temperatures. For this reason the alloy offers a unique opportunity for a fundamental study of creep of a very finely dispersed two-phase alloy. Lenel supplied specimens in both the unrecrystallized and recrystallized condition. This paper reports high-temperature creep experiments carried out on these specimens. The results obtained were rather unexpected. No steady-state creep was observed in the recrys-tallized material. In fact, after some transient creep which takes place upon loading, the creep rate is essentially zero ( < 10-8per min). If the second-phase particles acted solely as obstacles to the motion of dislocations, measurable steady-state creep would be expected. Since none is observed it appears that the main effect of the fine dispersion in the recrystallized material is to inactivate the dislocation sources themselves, rather than hinder the motion of dislocation loops created at these sources. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Specimens were tested in wire form, 0.087 in. in diam for the as-extruded alloy, and 0.035 in. in diam for the recrystallized alloy. These samples were held in friction-type wire grips; a gage length of 2.5 cm was used for all the creep tests. The specimens were held at 600°C in the test apparatus for at least 15 hr prior to each test. The tests were run under the condition of constant loading and, since the creep strains were small, can be considered as constant stress tests. The temperature of testing was held constant within 3°C. Elongations were measured with an optical cathetometer which was capable of measuring strains as smaIl as 0.00012. This allowed the measurement of strain rates as low as l0-8&apos;per rnin. In addition to the creep tests optical micrographs were made in order to determine both the grain size and microstructure of these materials. RESULTS Fig. 1 shows a few typical creep curves obtained from the as-extruded material. The elongations were somewhat erratic, but each curve shows a region of quasi-steady-state creep from which an approximate steady-state creep rate can be obtained. In general the higher the stress at a given temperature, the greater the total elongation before fracture. The lower the applied stress, the longer is the region where the creep rate is almost constant. Summary data from the creep tests of the as-extruded material are listed in Table I. The steady-state creep data of the as-extruded material for a range of stresses at a constant temperature follow a creep equation of the type creep rate = K&apos; = A exp (&) [11 where A and B are constants, k is Boltzmann&apos;s constant, T is the absolute temperature, and a the stress. The standard error of estimate of the data received is less than one order of magnitude. As shown in Fig. 2, if one compensates the creep-rate data for the effect of temperature over the range of test temperature, the steady-state creep data roughly follow a creep equation of the type Temperature compensated creep rate = K* = A exp
