The effect of welding speed on the microstructure of friction stir processed (FSPed) AZ31B-H24 magnesium alloy was studied using light microscopy, image analysis, and microhardness tests. The grain size of the magnesium alloy was observed to increase after FSP from about 3.5 µm in the base alloy to about 8 µm in the stir zone. The aspect ratio decreased from 1.60 to 1.55 towards the center of the stir zone. The changes in the grain size and shape caused the microhardness of the samples to drop significantly across the FSPed region from 75 HV in the base alloy to below 55 HV in the stir zone. Decreasing the welding speed increased the grain size due to a greater input of heat energy. The faster heating rate due to the lower welding speed caused a deeper penetration of the annealing effects of FSP. It was also observed that the annealing effects caused by FSP were less pronounced with increasing distance from the interface between the sample and pin tool shoulder. The Hall-Petch type relationship of the micro-indentation hardness as a function of the grain size was observed to hold true after FSP.

The drive selected for any piece of machinery must adequately satisfy the application requirements both during the starting interval and at running conditions, All loading possibilities of the drive must be known and allowances made for any adverse limiting conditions such as extreme cold, or perhaps an intermittent excessive loading situation etc. In general, the drive must be selected to provide the required operating characteristics with maximum reliability and at minimum cost. Simplicity of overall design is always an advantage and care must be exercised to insure that systems incorporating unnecessary complicated parts are not indiscriminantly provided. Important non-technical considerations such as equipment avail-ability (on an overseas project) as well as standardization details also play a role in the drive selection process. Additionally, an assessment of the potential capabilities of the personnel that will have to maintain the equipment can have some influence on the final choice. Several types of prime movers are available but this article will restrict itself to the use of induction motors operating from an available alternating current power source. Many drive arrangements are possible, the most common being the direct coupled single motor arrangement. CONSIDERABLE work has been done in developing a pyrometer to measure the temperature of molten brasses, bronzes, and aluminum in the crucible. On account of the high melting points and the amount of zinc and sulfurous fumes given off from molten brasses, the conditions are somewhat severe for a thermocouple of standard design; but satisfactory results are obtained with a portable pyrometer, 3 ft. (0.9 m.) of connecting lead wire, and a special 5-ft. nickel-nickel chromium thermocouple, composed of rods ¼ in. (6.35 mm.) in diameter. The lower 12 or 24 in., as desired, may be made detachable so that new tips may be connected at little trouble or expense. The portable instrument need not be of the extreme high-resistance type, as the movable parts of the galvanometer of a lower resistance instrument may be better constructed to withstand the continuous handling such an instrument receives. Platinum-platinum rhodium thermocouples, protected with porcelain and graphite tubes, have been used, but the lag in registering the temperature is too great. It has been found that the range of temperature for various brasses is as follows: Red brasses 2200-2250° F. (1205-1234° C.) Yellow brasses 2250-2400° F. (1234-1318° C.) Bronzes 2300-2550° F. (1260-1400° C.)

"Development of a process for the treatment of a nickel copper matte rich in the minerals heazlewoodite, chalcocite and bornite has demonstrated significant base metal recoveries and metal separation efficiencies. The determination of chemical and mineralogical changes occurring in the individual leaching stages in laboratory experiments has enabled a better understanding of the complex leaching chemistry. The chemistry and mineralogy of the piloting and laboratory processes are discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe nickel-copper sulfide ores of the South African Bushveld Complex are among the most important Platinum Group Metal (PGM) bearing ores, and contain the world’s largest reserves of platinum. The treatment used in the recovery of PGMs from these ores includes three types of processes, namely ore concentration using physical techniques such as flotation and gravity separation, concentration by pyrometallurgical means, hydrometallurgical extraction of the base metals followed by the PGMs. Following milling of the ore, flotation involves the separation of high value minerals from gangue by taking advantage of the differences in their hydrophobicity. These differences are generally maximized through the use of a surfactant or wetting agent. Concentrates are then thermally treated and melted which brings about physical and chemical changes that enable the recovery of base metals and PGMs. The main aim of the smelting and converting process is to separate and eliminate the valuable metals from the bulk of the unwanted gangue and essentially all of the iron and to concentrate the metal VALUES (into a high grade converter matte. The matte can be further enriched by magnetic separation, producing a PGM-rich magnetic fraction and a base metal-rich non-magnetic fraction. The magnetic fraction is treated by hydrometallurgical processes to produce a PGM concentrate which is further refined to separate and purify the individual metals. The non-magnetic fraction is treated to produce marketable metal VALUES (such as nickel, copper, cobalt and to a lesser extent PGMs. The principal objective of any hydrometallurgical extractive process is to leach the desired elements selectively into an aqueous phase so as to separate them from the bulk of the material. Records show that systematic water flooding was begun as early as 1935 in Greenwood County and in 1937 in Butler County. Water flooding on some earlier projects in Greenwood County were described in a Bureau of Mines Report of Investigation.2/ This report presents a discussion of 4 projects -2 in Butler County, 1 in Greenwood County, and 1 in Butler and Greenwood Counties. The location of these projects is shown in figure 1. The projects have been in operation 6 to 12 years and have recovered about 6.6 million barrels of additional oil from the injection of 84.7 million barrels of water. Three of the projects take advantage of the elevation of the nearby hilly terrain, and water from the treating ponds flows by gravity through the filters into the clear-water tanks. By utilizing gravity flow, fewer pumps and less electrical energy is required, resulting in more economical operation.

A self-appointed, committee consisting of J. Waldo Smith, Chairman, Richard S. Buck, J. J. Carty, J. Parke Channing, E. L. Corthell, Alfred Craven, Thomas Crimmins, Gano Dunn, George Gibbs, Alex. C. Humphreys, F. L. Hutchinson, Charles Warren Hunt, D. S. Jacobus, John W. Lieb, William Barclay Parsons, George H. Pegram, Charles F. Rand, Calvin W. Rice, Robert Ridgway, William L. Saunders, Merritt H. Smith, Bradley Stoughton, and William H. Wiley, organized a course of seven free lectures on military engineering, which were given by Captains Thomas M. Robins, Richard T. Coiner, Edward D. Ardery, Corps of Engineers, United States Army, and which was under direction of Major General Leonard Wood. The United Engineering Society presented, without charge, the use of the auditorium for the purpose of these lectures, but the interest proved to be more than three times as much as had been expected, and it was therefore necessary to divide the courses into three parts, one of which was given in the afternoon in the auditorium of the United Engineering Societies Building, one in the evening in the same place, and another in the evening in the auditorium of, the American Society of Civil Engineers. These lectures occurred on Mondays, from Feb. 14 to Mar. 27, 1916. The subjects and speakers were as follows: Feb. 14, 1916: Organization and Duties of Engineers in War, and what Engineers in Civil Life will be called upon to do in the Defence Of the United States. A nitride, believed to be Si3N, has been separated from three nitrided silicon steels. Germanium nitride, Ge3N4, has been prepared from pure germanium. Comparison of the diffraction patterns indicates that the two nitrides are isomorphous; on orthorhombic structure is suggested in place of the rhombohedral structure previously reported for Ge3N4. THE possibility that a nitride of silicon may, under appropriate conditions, precipitate in silicon steels or in steels killed with silicon makes it desirable to have some positive means of identifying such a compound. One such means is the X-ray or electron diffraction pattern of the nitride. A review of the meager data in the literature indicates that the nitride most likely to form is Si3N4, a conclusion supported by the results of a study of nitrided silicon steels to be published shortly by L. S. Darken and R. P. Smith, of this Laboratory. Unfortunately, there is available no diffraction pattern for this nitride. Data have been reported, however, for Ge3N4 which, judging from the similarity between germanium and silicon, might be expected to be isomorphous with Si3N4. An effort was made, therefore, to form such a silicon nitride, to determine its composition and diffraction pattern and, if possible, its structure. To this end a series of three silicon steels was nitrided under controlled conditions with the resultant formation of nitride particles which yielded an electron diffraction pattern in situ. The particles were then extracted from the steel and an attempt was made to determine their chemical composition. X-ray and electron diffraction patterns were also obtained from the extracted particles, which indicate that the nitride is isomorphous with Ge3N4, although a complete determination of the structure has not been possible. These results show that a silicon nitride with a well-defined diffraction pattern can form in silicon steels, and they suggest that this nitride is Si3N4. Materials and Procedures The sillicon steels investigated were In the form of thin sheet or strip and had the composition shown in Table I. The 0.58 and 1.21 pct Si steels were nitrided by holding them at 1110°F in an H2-NH3 atmosphere containing 3 pct ammonia for 48 hr. The nitride particle size was increased by subsequent heating at 1500°F for 13 1/2 hr in helium. The resulting microstructure is shown in Fig. 1. The steel containing 3.20 pct Si was nitrided at 1200°F for 16 1/2 hr after which it was held in helium at 1500°F for 4 hr. Its structure as seen under the electron microscope is illustrated by Fig. 2. As would be expected from the higher silicon content and the shorter holding time at 1500 °F, the nitride particles are smaller and more numerous than those in the 1.21 pct Si steel. The ammonia-hydrogen treatment reduced the carbon content of the steels to a very low level, so no interference was encountered from carbon or carbides. In the case of the 3.2 pct Si steel, the carbon was reduced to 0.003 pct before nitriding by heating in dry hydrogen. Attempts to obtain an X-ray diffraction pattern from polished and etched surfaces of the 1.21 and the 3.20 pct Si steels were unsuccessful. However, an electron diffraction pattern was obtained from the surface of the steels. The interplanar spacings obtained from these patterns arc shown in Table 11, col. 5. The nitride particles were then extracted from all three steels by dissolving the ferrite matrix in bromine-methyl acetate, the solution used in the Beeghly method for the extraction of aluminum nitride from steel. X-ray diffraction patterns of these residues, obtained by means of a spectrometer and by a 57 mm Debye-Scherrer powder camera using filtered cobalt or chromium radiation, are given in Table II along with the pattern obtained by

The two calcium sulfate minerals-gypsum and anhydrite-occur in many parts of the world, and gypsum has long been of economic importance in the family of industrial minerals. Gypsum, the dihydrate form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4•2H2O) and anhydrite, the anhydrous form (CaSO4) are frequently found in close association, and it is seldom that a calcium sulfate deposit will consist exclusively of one mineral or the other. Although known gypsum deposits are extensive, anhydrite makes up the largest part of total calcium sulfate reserves. However, it has very minor economic use, and most of the following discussion will be devoted to gypsum. Calcium sulfate is one of the principal constituents of evaporite deposits, and when pure, has the following composition: [Sulfur Combined Lime Trioxide Water (CaO) (SO,) (H2O) Gypsum 32.6% 46.5% 20.9% Anhydrite 41.2% 58.8% -] Deposits of pure gypsum or of pure anhydrite which are large enough to be considered commercial have never been found because of both the metastable relationship between the two minerals, and the presence of impurities such as calcium or magnesium carbonates, chlorides, other sulfate minerals, clay minerals, or silica. As a result most mine production of gypsum will range between 85 and 95% pure. Often it is used as mined, although in certain cases, one or more forms of mineral beneficiation are employed to upgrade the product. End Uses The largest use for gypsum is based upon the unique property which calcium sulfate has of readily giving up, or taking on, water of crystallization. With the application of a moderate amount of heat in a process known as calcining, gypsum is converted to plaster of paris (the hemihydrate of calcium sulfate, CaSO4 ½ H2O) which when mixed with water will set or harden as the calcium sulfate returns to the dihydrate form. This semifinished product, usually called stucco, is then manufactured into a large variety of plasters, wallboard, and block for construction use, or into plasters for industrial applications. About 75% of the gypsum used in the United States is calcined for these purposes. Uncalcined uses of gypsum are principally as a retarder for portland cement, as a soil conditioner, as a mineral filler, and other minor industrial applications. About 25% of the gypsum mined in the United States goes into these markets; however, in less developed countries where construction and other industrial uses may be quite limited, the use of uncalcined gypsum for portland cement retarder may well be the dominant-if not the only-market for the mineral. It has often been noted that calcium sulfate constitutes the world's largest reserve of sulfur, and minor use of both anhydrite and gypsum has been made to produce sulfuric acid or other sulfur compounds such as ammonium sulfate. However, because sulfur is readily available at lower cost from other sources, use of calcium sulfate has been limited to only a few locations where it could compete economically. No such use is reported in the United States at this time. Mineralogy Anhydrite, CaSO4 because of its geologically rapid conversion to gypsum, and relatively high solubility (about 0.2 g per 100 g H2O) is not often found outcropping in climates wet enough to support abundant vegetation except on steeply dipping slopes or other places where hydrated material is continuously removed. The irregular history of Mg wrought products is briefly described. The temperature and strain rate dependence of microstructural evolution, flow stress and ductility of Mg alloys in hot working, are described. The flow curves rose rapidly to a peak stress which was lower as temperature T rose and strain rate e declined and above 300°C the curves extended into plateaus until failure. Clearly grains not oriented for slip undergo mechanical twinning in the initial stages (a 0.15) at all temperatures. Basal slip proceeds in suitable grains and in the twins. The stress concentrations at grain and twin boundaries lead to slip on non-basal systems and to the formation of subgrains with greater dynamic recovery (DRV) at higher T or lower e. With increasing strain, misorientation builds up resulting in dynamic recrystallization (DRX) first at twin intersections and later at grain boundaries which have become quite serrated. Even after extensive straining at high temperatures, the new grains are found mainly along the boundaries of the original grains, leaving their centers with only basal slip except when nucleation at twins leads to completion of DRX throughout a grain. Despite similar shear modulus and melting point to Al, hot mechanical forming behavior of Mg alloys differ due to differences in crystal slip systems, twinning, and second phases. Moreover, the influences on forming of alloy additions (solutes, segregation in casting, dispersoids, precipitation) and impurities are not as well catalogued as for Al. Despite the benefits from dynamic recrystallization, varied grain orientation effects, heterogeneous substructures and the resulting stress concentrations result in considerably lower ductility for Mg alloys at the same stress level as for Al materials. Application of these theories to extrusion, rolling and forging and the effects on product properties are surveyed.

The data contained in this report were obtained incidental to the Bureau of Mine's investigation of the lime-soda sinter process as applied to the recovery of alumina from siliceous bauxite, kaolin, and other high aluminous materials. The Bureau of Mines was charged by Congress to investigate processes for the production of aluminum from domestic low-grade ores. The Eastern Experiment Station at College Park, Md., conducted laboratory and pilot-plant investigations of the recover-y of alumina by the lime-soda sinter process. Reports by the College Park staff covering the recovery of alumina from these sources have been published. The lime-soda sinter process involves the sintering of the finely ground siliceous bauxite or clay with limestone and soda ash in a rotary kiln. During the sintering the alumina supposedly reacts with the soda ash to form soluble sodium aluminate and the silica combines with the lime to form the insoluble orthosilicate. In the early stages of the investigation it was considered desirable to know the temperatures at which the phase changes occurred during the sintering operation. The total time involved in the passage of any given portion of the charge through the kiln was 28 minutes. The exposure time of the charge to temperatures above 600° C. (decomposition temperature of kaolinite) was, roughly, half the total. The exposure to the full temperature of the kiln, 1,100° C was only 3 minutes. (Subsequently, the maximum kiln temperature and retention time were increased.)

[Methods of distilling topped crude oils and distillates under vacuum, accompanied by good fractionation, have taken a place of major importance in the refining industry. In the refining of petroleum products it is generally desirable to produce a distillate of good quality, and this objective is attained by fractionation of a high degree. The laboratory and commercial practice have proved chat by varying the amount of fractionation the quality of the distillate car be changed, and refiners are cognizant of the advantages of good fractionation. Distillation-under high vacuum, however, is a relatively new practice in petroleum refining, and only during the last few years has there boon an indication that that this method ray become a general practice in the industry. Vacuum distillation offers many advantages over older methods of distilling petroleum products. Vacuum combined with steam distillation, for example, is replacing straight-stream distillation because the quality of the products of vacuum and, steam distillation surpasses that of those produced by straight-steam distillation. Although the injection of varying amounts of steam in a vacuum unit is common practice, the amount of steam used is becoming less as the vacuum within the unit is increased. This report describes tie construction of a visible-action laboratory batch still and fractioning; column and. gives curtain data pertaining to the operation of the apparatus under vacuum for the production. of lubricating distillates. The apparatus was designed and built to produce lubricating distillates under as nearly ideal conditions as possible, in order that a subsequent study of the characteristics of the distillates could be made.]

A scale based on existing data for the mutual solid solubilities of metals in binary systems has been compiled. This scale is useful for estimating the relative magnitude of two solubilities, provided that these two metals do not form a continuous series of solid solutions. In his classic work on the theory of metallic solid solutions, Hume-Rothery proposed that, other things being equal, a metal of lower valency should be regarded as more likely to dissolve one of higher valency than vice versa. He called this the "relative valency effect". Later he found that the application of this general principle was limited to the three univalent metals: copper, silver, and gold. In dealing with alloys of these metals with metals of higher valency, Hume-Rothery stated, it is usually found that the solid solution of the univalent metal is of the greater extent.&apos; The question of whether there is a systematic trend in comparing the relative magnitude of mutual solubilities, if valency is not considered a criterion, naturally arises. The present paper proposes a "mutual solid solubility" scale on an empirical basis. The order of its arrangement is determined by the relative magnitude of mutual solid solubilities. Some applications of and inferences from this scale are given. ORIGIN AND SCOPE OF THE SCALE An extensive survey of over 400 binary phase diagrams shows that, with certain exceptions and within certain limitations, metals can be arranged in the following order: Na Zn Cd Ga Bi Ge Sb As Hg Sn Si Mg Li Ba In Tl Pb Al Ca Be Mn Cr Re W Mo Cu V Ta Fe Ru Cb Co Ti Hf Ni Os Zr Ir Pt Au U Rh Ce Pd Ag Th so that a metal higher on the scale tends to have a higher solubility in a metal lower on the scale than vice versa. some experimental solubility data are given in Table I. These data, unless otherwise specified, are taken from Hansen and Anderko.6 Throughout this paper, the term "solubility of A in B" is taken to mean the maximum solid solubility of A in B in atomic percent, while the maximum solid solubility of B in A in atomic percent is called "reciprocal solubility". The exceptions found in the above-mentioned survey are: Al-Ag system, 20.34 at. pct Al in Ag, 23.8 Ag in Al; Mg-Pb system, 5.9 Mg in Pb, 7.75 Pb in Mg; As-Sn system, vanishingly small amount of As in Sn, a large As primary solid solution; Cd-Hg system, Cd in Hg <Hg in Cd; Mg-T1 system, 5(?) Mg in ßT1, 15.4 T1 in Mg; W-Ti system, -21 W in ßTi, -25 Ti in W; Zr-Ag system, probably small amount of Zr in Ag, 20 Ag in ßZr.7 Considering the large number of examples, the exceptions are few. It is remarkable that metals may be so arranged without considering other factors such as size, crystal structure, electronic structure, and so forth. A limitation to the use of the scale is the fact that it cannot be tested for two metals forming a continuous series of solid solutions. Pine Creek Goldfields Limited (PCG) is rehabilitating the Enterprise Pit to an aquatic habitat and potential water resource. This paper discusses the development and implementation of that plan. Pine Creek Goldfields Ltd&apos;s Enterprise Mine is located approximately 230 km south of Darwin. Open cut mining of the orebody commenced in 1985 and continued for eight years with 14 million m3 of ore and overburden extracted. Geochemical testing of exposed rock types in the pit has demonstrated a propensity to produce acid, and dissolved metals. A plan of management has been developed and implemented to minimise the risk of acid formation and improve the overall water quality in the final void. In developing the plan prime consideration was given to reducing the potential for pit water to impact upon the regional groundwater. An interception system was constructed on Pine Creek to divert approximately 9 km2 of upper catchment into the northern end of the Pit. Construction of the diversion system was completed in December 1993 and a comprehensive surface and groundwater monitoring program initiated. The monitoring program and associated studies are also discussed.

Tasks during Phase I of this contract effort were performed in four principal functional areas. These were geology, hydrology, reclamation and mining. Data were gathered from literature reviews, mine visits, survey of manufacturers, consultation with government agencies, and unpublished or private communications with contractors and consultants. The data collected were analyzed for omissions or inaccuracies, then organized into tables, graphs and flow charts to provide a concise body of technical and cost data suitable for the engineering analyses required in Phase II of this contract. Maps illustrating estimated grade and thickness of the oil shale were prepared, some of which are included as exhibits to this report. A preliminary mine layout was performed to test the completeness of the collected data.

To study by thermal analyses the response of precipitation hardenable alloys of Al-Cu-Mg and Al-Li-Cu-Mg system to natural and artificial ageing, a series of ternary and quaternary Al-alloys with nominal compositions of Al-l.13wt%Cu-0:65wt%Mg (alloy-I), Al-1.15wt%Cu-0.57wt%Mg-0.07wt%Li (alloy-2), Al-l.19wt%Cu-0.56wt%Mg-0.75wt%Li (alloy-3), Al-2.0lwt%Cu-0.89wt%Mg (alloy-4), Al-2.14wt%Cu"0.56wt%Mg-0.07wt%Li (alloy-5) were used in the present investigation. Samples in the form of rolled sheets are subjected to water quenching at 25EC after solution treatment at 530EC for 20 min. Alloys were aged naturally at room temperature (25EC) up to 2 months and artificially at 190EC up to 2 days. By using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) in the temperature range of25-300EC, differential thermal analysis (DTA) in the temperature range of25-600EC together with Vicker's hardness measurements, the response to natural and artificial ageing of the alloys used in the present study were investigated. It was observed that in these alloys, GPB(Cu, Mg) zones [Guinier-Preston zones with Cu and Mg] do form during water quenching at 20EC following solutionizing heat treatment. Natural ageing of the same alloys causes formation of more GPB(Cu, Mg) zones, which results in hardening in the alloys. Artificial ageing at 190EC up to l day results in GPB zone dissolution causing preliminary decrease in hardness values while two days of artificial ageing in the alloys cause S' (Al2CuMg) precipitation confirmed by DSC/DTA analyses resulting in an increase in hardness values. Li addition up to 0.75wt% helps T1 (Al2CuLi) and T 2 (Al6CuLi3) phase formation together with S' precipitation as DSC/DTA analyses show after the same heat treatment.

"INTRODUCTION The use of scrap mica as an industrial raw material has grown rapidly during the past two decades. Demands by various industries for ground mica for use in the roofing, paint, rubber, plastics, and wallpaper trades as well as for less extensive uses in insulation, oil-well drilling, welding, pipeline enamel, decorative material, and for other purposes exceed present (1947) supplies.A small proportion of the raw material used comes from the Black Hills of South Dakota, where casual recovery has been practiced in the exploitation of pegnatite deposits for more valuable minerals. The annual production of scrap mica in the Black Hills for the years 1939 to 1946 is shown in figure 19. 4/Although small, this production of scrap mica materially augments the incomes of numerous operators.Volume production of mica would offer attractive opportunities for obtaining steady and more economical supplies of the rare minerals as byproducts. Appreciable supplies of beryl, lithia minerals, sheet mica, tantalite-columbite, and cassiterite could accrue. Furthermore, a stable scrap-mica production would complement the production of quality feldspar, for which the Black Hills pegmatites are noted, and would help balance the economy of pegmatite mineral production.Mechanical methods of separation are requisite to production of enough scrap mica to be generally profitable. Various phases of the characteristics end treatment of mica have been investigated by the Bureau of Mines. A bibliography of these reports is appended.In 1945 the Bureau of Mines conducted pilot-plant tests to recover scrap mica by selective screening of crushed pegmatite. More recently the problem has boon studied in the Pegmatite Research Laboratory to aid in developing technological methods by which scrap mica may be separated from crushed pegmatite."

The E1 Indio Mine is located in the Andes mountains about 180 kilometers East of La Serena, capital of the Fourth Region of Chile. It is reached by an international highway running up the Elqui Valley as far as Juntas from where the last 42 kilometers is on a road constructed by the Company. The plant is located at 3.900 meters above sea level among extremely rugged terrain with nearby mountains rising about 5.500 meters. Climatic conditions at these altitudes are severe with winter temperatures down to -20°C. "Segregation of impurities during refining of metallurgical grade silicon (MG-Si) is an option to produce solar grade silicon (SG-Si). Directional solidification is a last step in production of SG-Si effective for removal of metallic impurities. The possibility is investigated to use metallic impurities originally present in MG-Si for removing boron and phosphorus. MG-Si has been treated using two methods: 1) alloying with calcium and 2) refining with Na2O-CaO-SiO2 slag, both by controlled cooling. The microstructure of silicon and the impurities distribution have been studied before and after the treatments. Using EPMA phosphorus and boron have been detected in 1-2 wt% concentration range in several intermetallic compounds in grain boundaries after both treatments. This observation points to a different possible mechanism of silicon refining from boron and phosphorus. Controlled cooling improves migration of phosphorus and boron to the silicide phases in grain boundaries, which can be removed by acid leaching treatment.2. IntroductionStandards for silicon solar cells and growing demand on “green” energy require economical and efficient route to the production of solar grade silicon. Refining of cheap metallurgical grade silicon is one of the promising options, where application of existing metallurgical approaches can result in cost-efficient production on industrial scale. Focus in refining is on impurities, which are most difficult to remove: B, P, Al, Ti, due to their large segregation coefficient in silicon and low vapour pressure [1]. Moreover, more environmentally friendly technology in comparison to the traditional Siemens process [2] will be in accordance with societal needs. Based on properties of common impurities in metallurgical grade silicon, alloying refining and slag refining are suggested as competitive techniques having potential effect on removal of impurities harmful for conversion of solar energy [3, 4]. Alloying with Ca followed by acid leaching was found to be effective for removal of Fe and Ti from silicon [5] and to enhance also removal of boron [6] and phosphorus [7, 8]. In the work of Inoue et al. [8] drastically increasing removal of phosphorus from silicon has been observed with an increase of Ca content and a thermodynamics-based explanation was provided. Since phosphorus has been found to condense in the secondary precipitate mainly composed of CaSi2, it can be removed together with iron and titanium by consecutive acid leaching treatment. Slag refining is one of the metallurgical methods proposed to be effective for refining of metallurgical grade silicon from boron [9, 10]. Slags with additions of the following oxides to silica have shown positive effect on removal of boron: CaO [11-13], Na2O [11,14]. Mechanism of slag refining from boron is based on oxidation of boron followed by its incorporation in the slag network [9,11]; the same mechanism is suggested for refining from phosphorus taking into account that oxides of boron and phosphorus are known as network-formers [15]."

Reliable prediction of longwall gas emission sources and rate plays a critical role in mine ventilation and methane drainage capacity planning. Over the years, Australian longwall mines have been using the historic Winter method and the Flugge method in modelling specific gas emissions (SGE). The predicted results often experience high discrepancies from the operational reality. To improve gas emission prediction, post-mining gas contents were measured in several mines in Qld and NSW by safely drilling core holes into the longwall goaf. The results revealed many new insights into gas emission characteristics from different coal seams and the drawbacks of the European methods in their use in high-production gassy Australian longwall mines. Based on measurement data, a new, time-dependent gas emission prediction model has been developed. Considering several factors such as caving, desorption and production rate, the new model can predict more accurate and meaningful gas emissions to meet today’s needs in mine gas emission management. A case study is provided to demonstrate the application of the new SGE model.
