A heavy mineral sand sample was tested containing 13% heavy mineral consisting of rutile, zircon, and ilmenite. Eleven tests were run at a mill site with a Mineral Deposit Limited MG 4 spiral to determine the effect of the addition 0; magnets to the spiral compared to conventional gravity separation. Different magnet configurations and field strengths were tested. Optimum results were obtained with the spiral retrofitted with magnets. The heavy mineral content of the concentrate was increased from 55.5% in the control to 64.2% with the magnets. The 8.7% improvement in heavy mineral recovery was due not only to the weakly-magnetic ilmenite, but also to increased recoveries if the non-magnetic zircon and rutile. The increased recoveries were achieved with no loss of concentrate grade.

In current practice, pile foundation design is based on a general under-standing of pile-soil interaction during installation and superstructure-pile-soil interaction after construction. The pile design is a reflection of experience, precedent and judgment for normal piling practice of working load capacities up to approximately 100 tons with corresponding ultimate capacities up to 200 tons. For higher capacity piles, pile design is even less predictable. In particular, the feasibility of pile installation is an important design consideration that must be given the proper attention. An installation capability that is not given the required emphasis can cause unnecessary problems.

"A cooperative research work on the silver recycling process is underway between Matsuda Sangyo Co., Ltd. and Tokai University in Japan. Silver wastes treated here are mainly from photograph industries where the concentration of minor element is steadily increasing in the recent years. The waste materials are concentrated and the impurities are removed by evaporation and slagging. In this paper, the industrial practice of wastes treatment is introduced and the result of the laboratory studies on the removal of antimony and tin from the binary and ternary alloys will be discussed. Characteristics in the behavior of antimony and tin during the process are also discussed with the observation of practical operation.1. IntroductionPrecious metals such as gold and silver primarily come from mining practice and the byproduct in copper smelting. However, the recycled amount of these precious metals have been increased 1 along with the environmental restriction and the widely accepted idea of saving resources on the earth in the recent years.· Though the recycle process of precious metals are comparatively simple from other metals refining, the process has been getting more complicated as wastes treatment has to deal with more impurity elements which are intentionally added to the products. Among these additives, antimony is used in the film materials in the photography industries to suppress its inflammability. Tin is another concern ,that is also coming from photography wastes; These minor elements have become problematic during the recycle.The removal of these minor elements has been in operation at Matsuda through a traditional oxidation refinement process using a reverberatory furnace. However, the complexity of the charge makes the recycle process more tedious and troublesome. In order to investigate the minor element behavior in the complicated materials system during the silver recycling processes, a cooperative research work is undertaken between Matsuda Sangyo Co., Ltd. and Takai University in Japan. Silver wastes treated here are mainly discharged from photograph industries where the minor element contents such as antimony, tin and bismuth in those wastes are steadily increasing in the recent years. The liquid wastes containing silver are concentrated and then treated pyrometallurgically with solid wastes from other sources, where the impurities are removed ·by evaporation and slagging. The purpose of this study is to investigate detailed behavior of impurity elements in the silver. containing systems."

Soda ash is the trade name for sodium carbonate, a chemical refined from the mineral trona or naturally occurring sodium carbonate-bearing brines (both referred to as natural soda ash) or manufactured from one of several chemical processes (referred to as synthetic soda ash). It is an essential raw material in glass, chemicals, detergents and other important industrial products. Production U.S. soda ash production during 2004 increased to10.9 million Mt (12 million st). Five companies comprised the domestic soda ash industry. Four were in Wyoming operating five plants. One was in California with one plant.

Biological leaching of low-grade nickel laterite is based on a non-traditional leaching of oxide minerals using heterotrophic micro-organisms. The organisms solubilise metals by excreting organic acids; these acids then form complexes with heavy metals. High salinity of water supplies and soils in the vicinity of nickel laterite ore bodies is a major abiotic stress to fungi and represents a major challenge in the application of bioleaching process in-situ. Salinity exposes fungi cells to Na+ toxicity and osmotic stress. This study examined the salt tolerance development of Aspergillus foetidus based on gradual acclimatization of organism, its salt threshold and the salinity effect on its metabolism. The biological leaching of weathered saprolite ore with the resulting halotolerant organism under saline conditions was assessed. Over the last ten years, Minemet Recherche and Metaleurop have used an approach in order to investigate and improve the operation of its Smelting furnace and its lead blast furnaces. This approach gives importance- to three complementary means of investigation : - Probing campains in the industrial furnace (temperature and gas analysis profiles), - Chemical and physical modeling (coke combustion, sinter reduction modes, flows patterns, ?.) , - Staged mass and heat balances or kinetic model. This allows to define the limits of operation of each blast furnace and to predict the influence of operating parameters on the furnace performances. For the zinc Imperial smelting furnace, the probing results show the existence- of both an Isothermal reserve zone at 1015ºc and a chemical equilibrium between ZnO and gas which makes possible the use of a practical model for heat and material balances. In particular, very good prediction on the influences of operating parameters can be made. On the contrary, for lead blast furnaces, the probing results show that the thermal and chemical equilibria are not reached. Consequently, classical models for staged heat and mass balances are not sufficient. The use of the other means allows then to characterize the specific influences of operating parameters on the thermal instabilities of these furnaces and their allowed limits.

"Evaluating the geological risk associated with ore deposits is becoming common practice in the mining industry. While geostatistical simulation is a useful tool for evaluating this risk, the effect of applying different types of simulation is less understood. For simulation of categorical variables like rock types, available methods perform simulation in fundamentally different ways. In this study, the geological risk relevant for informed mine planning is studied with two categorical simulation methods, PluriGaussian Simulation (PGS) and Sequential Indicator Simulation (SIS). Risk is expressed as a probability of repeated occurrence of lithological units in the same location across simulations. Significant differences are observed between the methods in terms of spatial distribution of risk. To identify the most plausible risk model, the input parameters at every step of both techniques are scrutinised. PGS and SIS inputs are classified as four parameters that are: fundamental to implementation of the methodfixed to enable comparison of PGS and SISdetermined by user interpretation, hence variablenormally optimised during application of PGS and SIS. The effect of parameter selection from categories 1 and 4 on the risk model is investigated using drill core data from a leucogranite deposit. A corresponding block model is created for assigning outputs from PGS and SIS. Risk models produced by either method are illustrated in a cut-out from the block model to enable bench-by-bench comparison. For PGS, risk associated with relatively rare lithologies is relatively sensitive to variation of parameters. Independent of the abundance of lithology, a location-dependent effect of variogram and vertical proportion curve parameter selection is observed, with risk increasing towards the deposit edge. Although SIS requires fewer inputs, single lithologies must be modelled in turn. Using small numbers of samples in the search neighbourhood, all risk models differ substantially. For larger numbers of samples, the risk models are similar. Overall it appears that the risk model produced using SIS is less sensitive to changes than PGS but further work is required to confirm this.CITATION:Palmer, L W and Glass, H J, 2014. "The importers and manufacturers who import or produce products with packaging containers are charged a recycling fee in Taiwan. The amount of waste packaging containers used for calculating the recycling charge is based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers which might be underestimated. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explores its distribution. The sampling survey and ratio estimation are conducted for estimating the recycled amount; while the refuse sampling method for municipal solid waste composition is employed to estimate the un-recycled waste packaging containers. The estimated total amount of waste packaging containers in 2011 generated by households in Taiwan is 696,511 m.t., of which, 79.49% of the waste packaging containers were recycled and 20.51 % were landfilled or incinerated. This study shows that the amount of waste packaging containers declared by importers and producers is underestimated around 20%.IntroductionWaste packaging containers including iron cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, paper containers, aluminum foiled paper packs are officially announced to be recycled in Taiwan. In order to create the economic incentive for raising recycling performance, associated manufacturers and importers are charged a recycling fee to subsidize recyclers. The amount of packaging containers declared by importers and manufacturers is used for calculating the recycling charge and recycling rate. The importers and manufacturers might underreport their producing (importing) amount to pay less recycling fees. Therefore, the estimated waste packaging containers based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers is usually underestimated. Related previous studies about waste packaging containers recycling in Taiwan are done by Hsu and co-workers [1-4]. Hsu and Kuo [1] estimated total production values of recycling and evaluated the performance of recycling performance based upon the estimated production values. Hsu and Liu [5] provided a cost analysis of recycling for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Bor, Chien, and Hsu [2] presented a market-incentive recycling system for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Hsu and Kuo [4] provided an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes for waste packaging containers recycling. Lee and Hsu [ 6, 7] explored the distribution, fee rates, and collection rate of waste containers. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explore its distribution."

A Máquina de Lingotamento Contínuo nº 1 da ArcelorMittal Tubarão (AMT), com capacidade nominal de 1,8 milhões de toneladas/ano, teve seu start up em 1995. A máquina é curva com raio de 10,5 m. São produzidas placas de 200, 225 e 250 mm, largura de 800 a 1650 mm e velocidade até 1,7 m/min. Em Abril de 2012, a Máquina parou para uma reforma geral. A empresa Italiana Danieli Davy Distington foi contratada para fornecer a engenharia, fabricação e entrega dos equipamentos no período de 12 meses. No ano anterior à parada da máquina, foi realizado um site survey, o que possibilitou a elaboração de um planejamento detalhado de todas as atividades. A reforma da máquina teve como objetivos principais: correção do alinhamento da máquina, substituição de estruturas oxidadas, implantação de novas tecnologias e redução do tempo de exposição dos operadores a ambientes agressivos (alta temperatura, projeção de aço, queda de cascão da panela e material particulado) através da implantação da sala remota de controle dos veios. A máquina foi colocada em operação em 10 de agosto 2012 após ter completado, sem desvios, as fases de instalação e testes. Este trabalho mostra as fases de desenvolvimento deste projeto, os resultados das tecnologias implantadas e os testes de performance para diferentes famílias de aço.

"SynopsisOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. Often mine owners will choose the contractor option without fully understanding the consequences of undertaking this option. Traditionally, contract mining has come at a cost premium of about 15% to 20% compared to an owner mining scenario. However, due to the large number of junior mining companies entering the mining arena in South Africa contract mining rates have increased, with cost premiums as high as 50% being reported. This paper looks at the merits of owner mining versus contract mining and describes under what conditions it may be favourable to select the one option over the other. In addition, the methodology of entering into contract negotiations with the objective of establishing a fair and sustainable relationship is discussed.IntroductionOver the last decade in South Africa, there has been a significant increase in the number of mining operations, both open pit and underground, which use independent contractors to carry out mining activities. This study was carried out with copper because it represents the simplest form of sintering, in that but one metal is involved and all reactions occur in the solid state. The present work will cover three variables affecting the sintering process; namely, briquetting pressure, sintering temperature and time in hot zone. Although strength and dimensional changes were observed, this is primarily a metal-lographic study of the sintering process in copper. The term "sintering" should be understood to mean the process by which the metal powder particles of the compact become united into one body. Material Used The copper powder used was made from reduced copper oxide, and is typical of a grade used for the mass production of parts formed of metal powders. The area covered by this paper is the same as that covered in 1944. Colorado, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming are included in the discussion and statistics, and brief mention is made of activities in the adjoining states, except Nebraska and New Mexico, which are considered separately (see pp. 187-189). The other adjoining states, North and South Dakota, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho, have had virtually no oil or gas production, except in the gas field of Cedar Creek. Montana, which extends into North Dakota; the Pierre field in South Dakota, where gas is produced and separated in gas-water wells, and the abandoned Payette area in western Idaho. Seven gas wells were drilled in North Dakota, but no wildcatting was reported. Several unsuccessful wildcats were drilled in South Dakota, and some were continuing at the end of the year. Activity in Idaho and Nevada was negligible.

Not since 1917 has a foreign company developed a standalone, grass roots gold mine in Russia. With. Russia's political changes of the late 1980s, development of mineral prospects once again beckons foreign investors. In 1990, Cyprus Amax began aggressively searching for such an opportunity. Early in 1997, production will commence at the Kubaka gold project located in the Russian Far East, near the Arctic Circle. The Kubaka project is a 1,750-tonne per day open-pit operation that will produce more than 300,000 ounces of gold per year. This paper discusses the challenges of locating such a prospect, doing business in Russia, developing supply lines, identifying work force capabilities, gaining government approvals, securing financing, arranging for gold sales and ultimately building a facility in this arctic region.

There are many inconsistencies and gaps in available information concerning the mechanism whereby dodecylamine acts as a collector for quartz. The author compares the studies which have been made in correlating the contact angle with adsorption density on quartz over all pH ranges, and attempts to resolve some of the inconsistencies. In recent years much information has been obtained concerning the mechanism whereby dodecylamine acts as a collector for quartz. Fuerstenau,1 for ex- ample, has shown that adsorption density and zeta potential under some conditions, at least, can be correlated with contact angle and flotation rate. There appear, however, to be several inconsistencies and gaps in information available. One inconsistency involves trying to correlate contact angle with adsorption density on quartz over all pH ranges. Fuerstenau's correlation at a collector concentration of 4x10-5 moles per liter dodecylamine acetate and about pH 10 shows a contact angle of about 80 degrees occurring at approximately monolayer coverage. If Gaudin and Morrow's2 and Morrow's3 contact angle data for near neutrality (pH 6 to 7) are now compared with deBruyn's4,5 adsorption data on quartz in a similar pH range, it will be noticed that a contact angle of 38 to 40 degrees corresponds to complete monolayer coverage (at an amine concentration of approximately 10"3 molar). A study of mining methods and underground practices as they influence injury from falls of roof or coal reveals data as to the location in the mine where such injuries occur with the greatest frequency and as to some of the methods and practices which are in use for the prevention of injury. This paper, which presents statistics bearing on the frequency and place of occurrence of accidents and discusses regulations and practices which have resulted in a low-frequency rates from falls of roof and coal in a few representative mines, takes its information from mine-accident reports and from the results of studies conducted in a group of 80 mines in the bituminous coal fields of Western Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. The statistics from this group of mines cover periods of one to four years but average 2 years and 7 months. During this time these mines produced over 110,400,000 tons of coal, equivalent to one-fifth of the annual production of all bituminous mines in the United States. The coal beds of the mines in the group studied are mostly flat, with local pitches of moderate degree. A number of mining plans are in use, each of which follows a general system of multiple entries, gross entries, and rooms. Room and pillar in panels either advancing, retreating, or half advance and half retreat, and the block system are employed. The methods of pillar extraction are by splitting, slabbing, pocket-and-stump, and open end. It is hoped that in presenting some of the details of the methods and practices at particular mines of this group which have commendable records in the prevention of injury some goad may accrue to many other bituminous mines which have similar natural conditions.

The mechanism shown here (Fig. 1) may not be all that it appears to be. To many of you it may look like a hopper car, a thing of mobility, in which you would ship coal, ores, limestone, or other bulk materials. It is approximately 50 feet long, 12 feet high, and can be placed on tracks which are on approximate 14 foot centers. But far too often in the past, and all too often today, this mechanism has been made to serve as an immobile storage box, with its primary role -- the transportation of products, seemingly incidental to the storage function. Our engineering training teaches us to conserve resources, despite some of the popular and misconceived philosophies being advanced these days. Those of you who work for companies with traffic departments know that they are always striving to reduce the price which is paid to move your mine products. Today, let's consider and analyze the ways in which the cost of transporting your mine products might be reduced, based on particular reference to coal. Bear in mind that in this context, cost and price are not necessarily synonymous. Until a few years ago, most coal and other bulk materials handled by railroads moved under standard tariff rules. These rules, which still exist today, provided transportation vehicles (railroad cars) for extended periods at no added price to the shipper or receiver. The first introduction of fuzzy theory in the nineteenth century created room for continuous research and application in various fields. Fuzzy set theory has been globally applied in geotechnical engineering, and research in this field continues to date. The fuzzy inference system is considered to be one of the most popular techniques adopted to resolve some of the geomechanical challenges faced in both surface and underground excavations. This paper unpacks fuzzy theory-based approaches in mine geomechanics with the aim of expanding the innovative application of the same approach specifically in tunnel geomechanics. This aim was achieved by conducting a review of recent successful and unsuccessful applications of fuzzy inference systems in underground excavations/tunnelling geomechanics. Indeed, this review has outlined some cardinal points associated with the ability of the technique to solve complex geomechanics problems. However, the success of the technique was accompanied by a few limitations associated with the methodology. Finally, a future outlook associated with the technique has been established.
