Success of a blasting pattern in Blasting-off-the-solid (BOS) in Bord (Room) & Pillar method of coal mining is judged by the percentage of pull achieved vis-à-vis the yield of coal produced in a blasted round. Improper blast design and distribution of explosives in shot holes normally causes poor breakage i.e. a major portion of shot holes left unbroken resulting into reduced yield per blast. Over and above the disturbance to the roof is also due to excessive vibration caused by explosive energy not properly utilized in fragmentation.

In the May, 1969 issue of Mining Engineering the Editorial Director, John V. Beall, described the Japanese Onahama Copper Smelter and Refinery as follows: "On the shore of the Pacific, 120 miles north of Tokyo, is the world's most modern copper smelter and refinery.? One of the improvements that has been made at the Onahama Refinery is the quality of the electrolyte in the copper refinery electrolytic cells. This has been accomplished by reducing the concentration of slimes in the cells between the electrodes. In a December 19, 1966 review in Chemical Engineering magazine reference was made to some tests in Sweden as follows: ?However, at 1,000 amps/sq.M., satisfactory cathodes could be prepared, provided electrolyte flow past the anode and cathode was at least 3 to 4 meters per minute, and the slime content was not allowed to exceed 20 to 30 mg. per liter. By dropping the current to 500 amps with the same electrolyte velocity, the slime content could grow to 50 mg. per liter (50 ppm) without causing occlusion at the cathode." From this data it appears that the production capacity of copper refining electrolytic cells can be significantly increased. In order to do this the concentration of suspended contaminating slimes in the electrolyte solution is reduced by filtration. The electrolyte in-between the active electrodes must be purged with higher velocities to maintain a high concentration of the desirable copper ion in the liquid film adjacent to the cathode and the sulfate ion in the liquid film at the anode. This higher velocity also carries away from the cathode the undesirable impurities released from the anode as they are released into the electrolyte as filterable solids.

INTRODUCTION In this paper we present preliminary results of a research program in site characterization methodology. We are interested in under- standing the response of discontinuous rock to mechanical, hydrologic, and thermal loadings. To carry out such a study we selected a field site with simple geology, uniform distribution of lithologies, and easily verifiable boundary conditions on temperature, fluid flow and stresses. The spatial distribution of fractures at the site was established and tests were conducted to determine the temperature field, hydrology, rock-mass properties, and in situ stresses. As part of the study selected borehole instruments were compared to assess their performance and reliability. SITE GEOLOGY The study area is in the eastern part of South Table Mountain, a mesa near Golden, Colo. The exposed cap rock is a single lava flow of uniform thickness (6-7 m) that rests on the clastic sediments of the Denver Formation (Van Horn, 1976). The surface of the cap rock (N. 75º E., 3º S.) is topographically featureless and slopes south- southeast; drainage is predominantly downdip and punctuated by occasional contact springs. The age of the lava flow is 64-65 m.y., or early Paleocene. Paleo- botanic evidence confirms the upper part of the Denver Formation as Paleocene (Van Horn, 1976). "Rapid-rock" analyses of core samples from the lava flow at three depths (0.2, 3.3, and 5.8 m) suggest a uniform chemical composition throughout with an increase in the Fe2O3/ FeO ratio (1.05 to 1.60) with increasing depth, reflecting the existence of a perched water table in the lava flow, To identify the rock

Material transport plays a significant role in the efficiency of horizontal grinding mills - autogenous (AG)/semi-autogenous (SAG)/ball mills. The magnitude of benefits that can be achieved with efficient material transport in AG/SAG mills has been demonstrated in a greenfield milling operation at Mirabela MineratpoÆs SantaRita Nickel operation located in north eastern Bahia in Brazil. This grinding circuit was commissioned in October 2009, was designed as a typical SABC circuit to grind 4.6 Mt/a (575 t/h) to produce a P80 of 125 ¦m with ten to 12 per cent ball charge in the SAG mill. However, it has been operating as an ABC circuit without any grinding media in SAG mill. The nameplate design capacity was achieved in few days and was gradually increased to an average of +800 t/h, still operating in ABC mode. The Santa Rita grinding circuit consists of one 30 ft + 15.4 ft 8.5 MW SAG mill fitted with Outotec patented Turbo Pulp Lifters (TPLÖ) in closed circuit with a HP400 short head pebble crusher and one 20 ft + 28.4 ft 5.5 MW Ball Mill in closed circuit with a Warman cyclone cluster fitted with 10 + 26 in CAVEX cyclones. This paper examines the comminution design process, operating philosophies, experiences, post commissioning optimisation and future development works. The A. P. Green Refractories Co. operates clay mines in ten states. Eight of these states have reclamation laws with which we have to comply and indications are that the U. S. Congress will pass a federal surface mining reclamation act in the near future. These regulations, in addition to the value of land in most areas, dictate that mining and reclamation be considered as a single operation. In many instances the land may be more valuable after properly planned mining and reclamation than before. Refractory clay, commonly called "fire clay" is defined as a siliceous clay rich in hydrous aluminum silicates, capable of withstanding high temperatures. It is deficient in iron, calcium, and alkalies and approaches kaolin on composition. Refractory clay is much more limited in occurrence and usage than common clay or shale. During 1971, common clays and shales were mined in 47 states with a total production of 45 million tons. Fire clay production was reported in 22 states with a total production of only slightly over 3 million tons.(1) Many of these producing areas are extremely limited in extent and production. Several are contained within a one or two county area. This reflects the unique geological conditions required for the formation or development of fire clay. The major fire clay producing areas in the United States are shown in Figure 1.

This paper is presented in the belief that metallurgists and chemists will be interested in the practice of grinding in tube-mills in connection with stamps, especially since the records of working here given extend over a lengthy period of time (since May, 1905). The ore from the Waihi mine—more especially that produced in the upper levels—contains a large proportion of hard, chalce-donic quartz, and the gold exists in an exceedingly fine state, conditions which necessitate very fine crushing in order to obtain a high extraction of the precious metal. Before the introduction of tube-mills at the 90-stamp Waihi mill, it was found necessary to stamp through 40-mesh (1,600 holes per sq. in.) woven wire-screens, having a fairly high discharge. The pulp then graded : Per Cent. Per Cent. On 50-mes11, .- 0.1 On l20-mesh ..8.77 On 60-mesh, . 8-74 On 150-mesh,.... 7.48 On 80-mesh,... 16.06 Passed 150-mesh,... 55.19 On 100-mesh,.... 3.66 The stamp-dnty was 2.89 short tons per stamp per day, or a total of 260 tons daily. Although the extraction on this pulp was: gold, from 88 to 90 per cent., and silver, from 74 to 78 per cent., it was recognized that finer grinding of the sands would prove beneficial, provided a machine could be found to do this work economically. Various grinding-mills and pans were tried, but without satisfactory results, the particles of sand being so hard that the capacity of any of the machines was too small to be economical. Mesothermal gold deposits of southernAlaska and Westland, New Zealand have both formed at the seaward edge of major collisional zones in the Pacific basin. In Alaska, production of large fluid volumes correlates in time with the addition of heat into the lower parts of the accreted terranes in the late stages of collisional orogeny. This heat was critical for driving both the metamorphic reactions that released the large volumes of fluid that carried the gold, and the contemporaneous widespread anatexis and magmatism. In Alaska's Chugach terrane, this heat as produced by subduction of a spreading ridge beneath the North America continental margin in the Eocene. The resulting products were the S-type granites and gold-bearing veins. The similar widespread S-type plutonism and gold veining in Westland's Buller terrane suggest that a similar tectonic event could have triggered ore formation along the southeastern edge of Gondwanaland. Based on the Alaskan model, a Devonian or Early Carboniferous age is favoured for high volume metamorphogenic fluid generation and gold vein formation in Westland.

Near Bunker, Mo., in the New Lead Belt, Ozark Lead Co. operates a 6000 tpd lead-zinc mine. Mined ore is transported to the surface in three mechanized and automated steps. The mine is developed by a rectangular-shaped sublevel haulage drift 15 ft high by 28 ft wide, driven on strike below the ore zones. Ore transfer raises were driven from the sublevel at locations near the shaft, 1500 ft distant, and on subsequent 1000 ft centers. These 6 x 5-ft raises are slashed to obtain maximum storage below dump points. These dump points are located on each mining level and are of steel and concrete construction. Spiral 12 X 24-ft inclines driven from the sub-level provide access to these levels for equipment and mine utilities.

THE Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the com-position as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the fusing temperature of ash, Hardgrove grindability index, and the free-swelling index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions 4 issued by the Bureau; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau's laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor and, if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of delivered coal and "tipple" samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) are valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. Moreover, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.

Introduction United States Steel Corporation's, Texas Uranium Operations operates in-situ mines located approximately 70 miles north of Corpus Christi near the town of George West in Live Oak County, Texas. In 1977, Texas Uranium Operations became the operating entity for the Burns Ranch mines 100% United States Steel ownership and also operates the Clay West mines a 50150 joint venture of United States Steel Corporation and N M Uranium, Inc. Until mid-1982, Texas Uranium operated eight (8) satellites where uranium was captured on resin and two central plants where the loaded resin was eluted, acidized, precipitated and dried to yellowcake. At present, the Clay West Central Plant is operating, as are four (4) satellite plants in a mode designed to optimize results while depleting remaining reserves. United States Steel's Texas Uranium Operations, as have some other uranium producers, managed to continue successful production during the plunge to the recent floor price of $17. Despite the fact that United States Steel does not intend to continue as--a uranium producer beyond the life of its present reserves, we naturally hope the recent trend to the pre- sent price of $24 will continue to increase.

The equilibrium ratios CO/CO, of. a gas pharse coexislitrg with selected oxide phase assemblages of the system "FeO"-MnO-SiO2 and metallic iron have been determined at 1150°C. The data obtained are combined wilh the thermodynamic data on fayalite (Fe2SiOi) and "FeO"-MnO solid solutions to derive the actiuity-coiHpQsiUon relations for the various oxide components of the olivine (Fe2SiO4-,lIn2Si04) and pyroxenoid (standard free energies of formation of ferrosilile (FeSiO,), tephroite , and rhodonite from their oxides have been evaluated. In the Appendicc~s by Darken and Schivcerdtjeger the ideal solution law for solid deri oed. THE quaternary system Fe-Mn-Si-0 is of interest in many important phases of iron- and steelmaking. For instance, reduction in the blast furnace of ores containing Fe-Mn silicates, deoxidation of liquid steel with Mn-Si alloys, formation and subsequent alterations of oxide inclusions in steels, and the oxidation of manganese- and silicon-containing steels during processing are all governed largely by the thermodynamic relations existing in the system Fe-Mn-Si-O. Although the equilibria between liquid iron and Fe-Mn silicates have been studied in detail previously,' experimental data are lacking for equilibria among the solid phases. The present paper provides such data for a selected temperature, 1150°C. I) PREVIOUS WORK The general feature of subsolidus phase relations in the system iron oxide-manganese oxide-silica under strongly reducing conditions is known.' Fig. 1 represents an isothermal section at 1150°C. The phases present, in addition to silica, are three solid-solution series, viz.. the oxide solid-solution series "Fe0"-MnO (manganowiistite), the orthosilicate solid-solution series Fe2SiO4-Mn2SiO4 (olivine), and the metasilicate solid-solution series FeSi03-MnSi03 (pyroxenoid). The "FeO"-MnO solid solution is continuous between the two end members wustite and manganositeV3 as is the orthosilicate series between the two end members Fe2SiO4 and Mn2 SiO4. 4 The metasilicate solid solution, on the other hand, extends only part way from the MnSi0.l end member toward FeSiO because the latter end member is unstable relative to the phase assemblage fayalite + silica. The letters a through m in Fig. 1 identify end members of the individual solid phases dealt with [for instance, c designates fayalite (FeZSiO4) in equilibrium with wustite, e designates fayalite in equilibrium with silica, and so forth]. In addition to the phase relations there are some thermodynamic data available for the end members of the silicate solid solutions and for the "FeO" -MnO solid solution. The free energy of formation of fayalite (Fe2Si04) from its oxide components has been studied by several investigators. Unfortunately, the data obtained show considerable discrepancies. The Library of the above-named Societies is open from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on all week-days, except holidays, from September 1 to June 30, and from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. during July and August. The-Library contains about 55,000 volumes, including sets of technical periodicals and the publications of scientific and technical societies. Members of the Institute, with few exceptions, are forced to spend .a portion of their time in localities isolated from sources of information. To these the Library can render valuable service through correspondence; letters requesting information will receive special attention. The Library is prepared to furnish references and copies of articles on mining and metallurgical subjects; to determine the existence of mining maps, and to furnish general information as to the geology and mineral resources of all countries. All communications should be made as definite as possible so that the information received may be what is desired and not include collateral matter which may not be of interest. The time spent in searching for such collateral matter will be saved, and the information will be sent more promptly and in more usable shape. The members of the Institute can be of service to the Library by forwarding copies of mining reports maps privately issued, and similar material, which will he classified, indexed, and made available to other members. Suggestions for additions to the Library, either by purchase or personal solicitation as gifts, will be welcomed. It is hoped that members while in the city will use the Library freely, and. assurance is given that most careful service will be rendered to them.

"The human history is characterized by social development based on mineral and energy resources, and many conflicts to take the resources by power. This is shown by not only world wars but also many local conflicts as well as international supremacy.IntroductionThe world population after B. C. 10000, which is summarized in several papers, is approximated by four straight lines on a semilogarithmic diagram as shown in Figure 1 [l]. The annual rates of increasing are 0.0041, 0.071, 0.53, and 1.85 % from the old and young periods. The boundaries among four periods are approximately B. C. 4600, AD. 1670, and 1930. The start of the second period seems to correspond to the beginning of agriculture and cattle breeding. Precisely speaking, the usage of natural energy resources such as woods and domestic animals already began, but is inferred to have become common after the age. The third and fourth periods are characterized by the common usage of coal and oil, respectivety. Not only energy resources but also mineral resources including gold, copper, iron and others are also important for the human history.Mineral and energy resources have supported the development of the .human civilization, and have caused many conflicts because of this reason. Every day newspapers report conflicts, such as Chechnya, East Timor and Ache. We can easily point out the facts that the conflicts closely relate to mineral and energy resources. Groznyj, Capital of Chechnya, is located on the western margin of Caspian oil field. Many mineral deposits occur in Kavkaz Mountains running south of Chechnya. Subsea oil fields occur in Timor Gap located between East Timor and Australia. Ache is also one of oil fields in Indonesia. It is very difficult to state present conflicts independently of a political view of point. For this reason let us try to historically review the relation between mineral and energy resources and international domination and conflicts [2] based on many papers [3]."

Distinguished guests ladies and Gentlemen. As many of you know, before I became a Labour Member of Parliament, I had an unusual career path for a politician, in that I spent quite a few years working in the business community. In other words, I was mainstreamed before I was institutionalised. Given that some of this time was spent working for the then Macraes Mining Company Limited, now Gold and Resource Developments NL, I feel that I may have a perspective on how things are seen, on both sides of the fence. In terms of public perception and esteem I am not sure which career option was the step up and which was the step down. So far what I have found very familiar, is that in both roles there is a gulf between the reality and the perception of that reality - a gulf that is both huge and hard to bridge. I think it is a point worth making here amongst another busy industry cluster, that we can all too easily get so embroiled in the day to day activities, that we lose sight of how this might look to those running on a different treadmill. I can still remember scratching my head at the beginning of some days, as I worked to get new mining projects started that I knew were going to bring real jobs and economic benefit to New Zealand, but ending the day feeling like I may instead have been proposing bringing back both strip mining and slavery. If I learnt one valuable lesson out of that time it was this: .... mining has become so publicly demonised on the road to ecological nirvana, that even attempting a lucid dialogue on mining issues, with some, is incredibly difficult.

High-pu.1-ity molybdenum has been heat treated, melted, and zone refined and the physical and chemical changes that are produced by these processes have been studied by making resistance ratio measurements. Pronounced effects are observed that are associated with recrystalliza-tion at about 1200°C and with melting. Melting alone is found to result in a substantial purification by the evaporation of impurities such as iron. Zone refining is found to be reasonably effective with four passes producing a three-fold decrease in resistance ratio and a minimum ratio of 0.0003. With the aid of low temperature measurenzents, it has been shown that the build-up of a deposit of the material being zone refined on the radio frequency coil used for heating can lead to contamination of the sample. CONSIDERABLE interest in high-purity refractory metals for the study of mechanical properties has developed during recent years. Also the need for highly pure metals in certain fundamental studies, such as electronic band structure, has become quite widely appreciated. Molybdenum can now be produced with sufficiently high purity to make it attractive for such investigations. The most suitable measure of chemical purity of metals used for many of these studies is its resistance ratio, R,.,o,/Ro, During the purification of molybdenum by zone refining and its subsequent evaluation by this technique, a number of informative observations were made. These observations concern the effectiveness of zone refining, the volatilization of impurities at the melting point, and the recrystallization of molybdenum and appear to be pertinent to other refractory metals. Also, the usefulness of low-temperature resistance measurements as an analytical tool for evaluating the presence of chemical impurities and physical defects in metals is again illustrated. Samples of high-purity molybdenum of known mechanical history were heated to various temperatures between 800°c and their melting point. Resistance ratios of the samples were measured after they had been given a specified treatment. The data were used, along with mass spectrographic analysis, as an aid in interpreting the nature of the processes that occurred in conjunction with each treatment. Changes in the concentrations of chemical impurities and physical defects are typical of things that effect the low-temperature resistivity. SAMPLES The starting material was obtained from Westing-house Corp., Bloomfield, N.J. It was in the form of molybdenum rods, usually 1/8 or 3/16 in. in diameter. These had been previously processed from bars, 5/8 in, in diameter, originally reduced from 4 in. diam arc-cast ingots, by hot swaging at about 1300°c. In the final step, the temperature was lowered to about l lOO°C which resulted in the production of elongated grains. Typical grains were about 0.03 mm thick and 0.6 mm long. The molybdenum was quite pure as is indicated by the results of mass spectro-scopic analysis1 given in Column 2 of Table I. Other nongaseous elements not listed in the table were not detected. An annex building at the former Agency for National Security Planning(NSP) complex located in downtown Seoul was demolished by progressive collapse method. This work was done as a part of efforts to restore the landscape of Namsan Mountain which lies in the Center of Seoul. The five-story reinforced concrete structure was razed in 5.5 seconds by the 29kg of high powered explosives which were placed in some 320 holes in the building with floor area of 2,577 m². The asbetos and all the other finishing materials in the building were removed before the demolition and the specially coated wrap minimized the spread of blasting dust. Seismic and air overpressure waves were monitored at 8 points, which were below safety limits and the continuous communication with neighborhood prevented any complaint.

The inferred ground conditions for the proposed mined cross passages at the northern end of the Waterview Connection tunnels consist of an overburden of alluvial and residual soils, with mixed face geology of highly weathered to unweathered extremely weak rock. This paper describes three-dimensional (3D) finite difference analyses undertaken to evaluate the stability of the cross passage headings and to validate the proposed sequence of excavation. The analyses undertaken incorporated the influence of the construction of the mainline tunnels and the breakout opening in the segmental lining for construction of cross passages.The stability analyses were carried out using FLAC3D™, version 4.0 (by Itasca Consulting Group) by progressive reduction of shear strength parameters to obtain a failure condition and estimate a factor of safety. For each step of strength reduction, corresponding increments of displacements of several points on heading faces were monitored. The stability obtained from numerical analyses was compared with analytical solutions. Interpretation of results of drained analyses indicated instability of the upper 2 m of heading face within the highly weathered rock mass. Additional analyses were undertaken by including grouted fibreglass dowels to reinforce the heading face. The results of the additional analyses showed significant reduction in displacements and yielding of ground around the face. The proposed temporary support comprised face reinforcement using grouted fibreglass dowels in conjunction with canopy tubes and perimeter support of steel fibre reinforced shotcrete. The stability of the construction sequence, which was related to the specific requirement of the proposed excavation equipment, was validated.CITATION:Wansbone, M G and Bhargava, R, 2014.
