"The Report outlines the Conversion to Rubber Mill Liners and steel grinding balls from the old style Cobalt pocket liners and flint pebbles which had been used in 5'x22' Fraser-Chalmers tube mills for over fifty years. An outline of the past history and some of the plant modifications are mentioned as well.The details pertaining to considerations, modifications and repairs carried out on the mills are described. Factors influencing the rubber liner design are outlined along with the description of the rubber liner design.The performance and advantages to date are given and concludes with brief summary.HISTORYThe original amalgamation-cyanidation mill of Dome Mines Limited went into operation in 1912. Milling has been continuous since 1912, except for two periods; one of 17 months commencing in December 1917, and the other of about 12 months, when fire destroyed the plant in November 1929. Initially the capacity of the mill was 350 tons a day. In 1916 it was raised to 750 tons a day, following which there was a gradual expansion to 1,500 tons a day."

DURING the period from 1910 to 1920, there was a lively interest in the subject of grain growth and many papers were published, followed by interesting discussions. Questions dealing with the fundamentals of grain growth-why and how it occurs-were treated in papers by Howe,1 Jeffries,2 Sauveur,3 Chappell,4 Beilby,5 Mathewson and Phillips,6 McAdam,7 Carpenter and Elam,8 Stead and Carpenter,9 Ruder,10 as well as others. Since that decade, much indeed has been done regarding the practical control of grain size, and it is now possible to order material having a size specified in the American Society for Testing Materials classification. Also, one hears the term "spliced boundaries" used in connection with certain tungsten lamp filaments" wherein it is important to prevent "sagging" between consecutive turns of the helix." This practical use of a certain knowledge as to the things that influence or even control grain growth should not be taken as an indication that the subject has been thoroughly explored and that nothing more can be learned from fundamental studies. It is with this thought in mind that a report of some observations and experiments on abnormal grain growth is believed justified. Abnormal grain growth is met with in heat-treating high-carbon steels in the austenitic range,13 in the hardening treatments of high-speed steels, 14.11 and in the low-temperature annealing of strained low-carbon steels as in sheet and wire material. Entirely aside from these instances of exaggerated grain growth, which some might consider as freakish, it is thought that abnormal growth is simply a case where the growth forces and the forces tending to prevent growth are almost, but not quite, evenly balanced. Information relative to grain-growth characteristics in general may be obtained from a study of abnormal growth conditions, which may be looked upon as vantage points. Reflection will show at once that if growth forces are great in comparison to inertia or resistance to growth, many crystals start to grow and, for that reason, none becomes very large, whereas if inertia is predominant no growth at all takes place. This paper describes the investigations and results of monitoring of deformations of houses located within the area of influence of a pillar collapse over the Westfalen No. 3 coal mine near Ipswich, Queensland. The subsidence resulted in minor subsidence of at least 18 modem houses and serious damage to 4 others. The history of the events and the measures taken to deal with the physical problems arising are described. The investigations and results are described and related to the mining methods and geology. The stability of coal pillars up to 9.6 m high was considered and computer modelling undertaken to relate surface subsidence to estimates of the extent of pillar failure. Assessments were made of the likely extent of subsidence during the incident. Measurements of distortion and tilt were obtained as the ground slowly subsided and criteria established to determine when the structures were deemed to be unsafe. Detailed surveys of houses affected or anticipated to become affected were also undertaken. Four houses were condemned and subsequently demolished as a result of excessive tilt. The methods of assessment are described and the implications of the results related to the various' house designs.

Introduction Coal is found in every major geographic region through-out Alaska and in two offshore areas. Since about 1852, more than 100 small mines have opened and closed. In 1981 and 1982 production was almost entirely from one mine in central Alaska. Clearly, the utilization of Alaska's abundant coal resources presents political, economic, and technical problems that are far from solution. Location and Physical Features Figure 1 illustrates the geographical and geological similarity between Alaska and the western US. Alaska's Arctic region generally resembles Wyoming and the Dakotas. The Brooks Range is an extension of the Rocky Mountains. The central region of Alaska between the Brooks Range and the Alaska Range bears a general resemblance to the basin and range country of the western US. The southcentral and southeastern regions have a similar resemblance to the Sierra Nevadas and the West Coast. The Arctic, the central, and the southcentral regions have major coal fields. The southeast region has scattered occurrences. The topographic, climatic, and economic characteristics of each are different. These differences have a large effect on practical mining methods. Description of Alaskan Coal Coal deposits known in Alaska are almost all of Cretaceous or Tertiary age, much younger than the Carboniferous coal deposits of eastern and midwestern states. Consequently, most Alaskan coals have a higher moisture content and a lower heat value. Most Alaskan coals also have a much lower sulfur content. Low volatile bituminous, and anthracite coals occur in Alaska, but most Alaskan coals range downward in rank from high volatile bituminous to subbituminous and lignite. Alaskan coals are similar to coals of the northern Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. Arctic Region Northern Alaska Coal Fields Northern Alaska coal fields are by far the largest group of coal deposits in Alaska (Fig. 2). Coal-bearing rocks extend from the foothills of the Brooks Range about 160 km (100 miles) northward to within about 80 km (50 miles) of the Arctic coast. The principal known occurrences are between the Colville River and the western coast. However, coal has been found eastward almost to the Canning River and westward under the Arctic Ocean. The northern Alaska coal fields are in a series of Cretaceous rocks that suggest a deltaic depositional environment. The beds tend to occur in series of up to eight or nine beds totaling 6-9 m (20-30 ft) of coal. However, beds 6-12 m (20-40 ft) thick have been reported, and beds 1-3 m (3-10 ft) thick seem to be relatively common. Including thin seams, coal in some places makes up about 10% of the stratigraphic section. However, no area has been explored in sufficient detail to block out any large body of reserves or to make reliable estimates of the total resource. Observation points in drill holes and along river and stream banks are few and far between. Coals in northern Alaskan fields tend to range in rank from bituminous, where moderately folded and faulted in the foothills, to subbittuminous in the gently folded rocks under the coastal plain. Coals toward the eastern extremities of the coal fields may be of Tertiary age and lower in rank, but the same general correlation between degree of folding and increase in rank can be expected. The use of belt air as an intake source at longwall operations has greatly changed over the past decades. The practical considerations for the use of belt air are controlled by a variety of factors including airflow quantity and velocity, coal methane content, methane desorption rates, coal mining rate, belt length, stopping leakage, and the number of gateroad entries. At longwall operations, the advantages and disadvantages of belt air are different for gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. During gateroad development, the use of belt air to ventilate the working section will reduce the leakage from the intake to the belt compared to the belt air being ventilated outby the working sections because of lower pressure differentials. A greater quantity of airflow will reach the last open crosscut with belt on intake than outby, given the same amount of pressure and airflow available at the mouth of the section. This paper will investigate the current ventilation practices regarding the use of belt air during gateroad development and longwall panel extraction. Operating considerations regarding air quantities and pressures to deliver the required airflow will be investigated using ventilation network modeling.

The Rocky Mountain region contains part of the paleocontinental shelf that lay in Arizona and New Mexico through Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming into Montana and North Dakota. The shelf was bounded by the northeast-southwest-trending Transcontinental arch and the Cordilleran miogeocline in late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic time. Major tectonic features that affected middle Phanerozoic sediments on the shelf were the Big Snowy trough and Williston basin in the north and the ancestral Rocky Mountains in the central part of the region. The Zuni uplift and similar positive areas occurred along the axis of the Transcontinental arch in the southern part. The late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic sedimentary rocks record transgressive-regressive marine cycles in which the Cordilleran shelf and much of the adjacent craton were inundated by epeiric seas. Early in the Carboniferous, an epeiric sea covered most of the shelf. Greater topographic relief developed in Late Mississippian, was at a maximum in Middle Pennsylvanian, and then diminished through Permian and Triassic time. The development in the Pennsylvanian Period of horsts and grabens along northwest- trending faults on the northwest flank of the Transcontinental arch resulted in the ancestral Rocky Mountain system. The eastern part of the region was emergent by Middle Triassic, and the emergence lasted until Middle Jurassic, owing to uplift along the Transcontinental arch. During the early part of the Mesozoic, the sediments were dominantly terrigenous and were deposited mostly in shallow littoral marine environments shifting to continental. Most middle Phanerozoic structural elements within the area of the shelf are characterized by lineaments that have either an east-northeast or a conjugate north-northwest trend. The east-northeast lineaments closely parallel the northeast trend of the continental slope (miogeocline) in Nevada to southern Idaho. The conjugate set closely parallels the northwesterly continuation of the miogeocline north of an approximately right- angle bend in south-central Idaho. The northeasterly trending Transcontinental arch and the northwest-trending margin of the Canadian Shield are parallel structural elements with the north- east and northwest trends of the miogeocline. The rectangular lineament pattern on the shelf suggests a system of rectilinear fractures within the underlying Precambrian crystalline basement rocks that moved several times in the Phanerozoic in response to external forces applied against the continental crust. Movement of these blocks influenced erosion, deposition, and lithofacies of the sediments in middle Phanerozoic time. Zones of crustal weakness, represented by the lineaments bounding these blocks, probably were influential in localizing sedimentary mineral accumulations and petroleum deposits, as well as later igneous intrusions, volcanism, and emplacement of hydrothermal ores. Igneous activity in this region was rare during the middle Phanerozoic, but these conjugate fractures seem to have been avenues for later passage of hydrothermal solutions responsible for ore emplacement.

A ArcelorMittal Tubarão vem trabalhando nos últimos dois anos na implantação de um sistema automatizado de julgamento da qualidade da superfície de bobinas laminadas a quente, juntamente com a ArcelorMittal Global R&D. Tal sistema é denominado CGSIS – Coil Grading Surface Inspection System – e tem a função de interpretar as ocorrências de defeitos superficiais, identificados por um sistema de inspeção automático através de câmeras CCD auxiliado por técnicas de visão artificial, à luz da necessidade requerida pela aplicação final do material. Todas as ações sugeridas pelo sistema são baseadas em regras de aplicação e nas informações obtidas do sistema de inspeção automático, requerendo para isso taxas de acerto de classificação de defeitos adequadas para uma boa tomada de decisão. Para tanto, várias melhorias foram necessárias, envolvendo questões de ambiente, desempenho, confiabilidade, disponibilidade e treinamento do sistema, para se obter com isso melhores níveis de detecção e acerto. Outras questões envolvidas em tal processo concernem às mudanças aplicadas a políticas já estabelecidas de julgamento e comunicação do novo sistema com os sistemas já existentes. Vários benefícios da implantação do projeto já estão sendo percebidos provenientes das etapas de preparação para a instalação e espera-se que após a operacionalização um ganho superior a R$320k entre redução de custo com pessoal, aproveitamento de material e redução de reclamações de clientes seja alcançado.

Printed circuit boards (PCBs) from discarded personal computer (PC) and household appliances were crushed by mechanical crushing or water explosion to remove mounted parts. More parts were stripped from PCB for PC composed of epoxy resin than from PCB for household appliance composed of phenol resin. In an attempt to raise the copper grade of PCB by removing other components, a carbonization treatment was investigated. The crushed PCB without surface-mounted parts was carbonized under a nitrogen atmosphere at 1073K. After screening, the char was classified by size into oversized pieces, undersized pieces and powder. The copper foil and glass fiber pieces were liberated and collected in undersized fraction. The copper foil was liberated easily from glass fiber by stamping treatment. On the other hand, tantalum capacitors were collected from mounted parts. The tantalum-sintered bodies were separated from molded resins by heat treatment at 723 to 773K in air atmosphere and screening of 0.5mm. Silica was removed and 70% of tantalum grade was obtained after more than 823K heating and separation.

Frequently, costs overruns and defaults in mining project performance result in serious problems and headaches for all project participants and impact on corporate objectives, profits and image and, occasionally, lead to project failure. As mining professional s, we should be very concerned that, in a recent World Bank paper (Weber-Fahr, 2001), geological and technical risks were considered the most important ones facing mining projects. Whenever we manage to reduce or minimize these risks, we are in better position to overcome the environment-, market-, finance- and community-related ones. The causes of this situation seem rather systemic, as a fairly long list of industry problems with new pro jects has been described in industry papers in pas t and recent years. A brief review of industry problems with mining projects will be given first, followed by a review of the basics of the current Quality Management and Continuous Improvement perspectives that have evolved from earlier quality control and quality assurance systems and policies. Particular particular attention will be given to the work of W. E. Deming. As the system approach is an essential part of such policies, it will be described succinctly. Given that poor communications and interactions among geologists, mineral processors and mining engineers/operators ca n seriously affect project efficiency and profitability, these interrelated processes with in the mining systems will be analyzed and modelled and the impacts of such situations will be described through a number of anonymous case histories and examples. A synthesis of Dr Deming's management system, includ ing his Four teen P oints and System of Profound Knowledge, will be prese nted .

A Fábrica de oxigênio da AMT produz gases O2 e N2, utilizados no processo de produção de aço. Neste processo de fracionamento de ar, existe um compressor de ar que é responsável pela captação do ar atmosférico. Este compressor é do tipo centrifugo de 4º estágios de compressão, fabricação Hitachi, e tem capacidades de vazão de 114.000 Nm³/h e pressão de descarga 5.4 Kg/cm². Em Novembro de 2012, foi realizada inspeção no compressor e identificado trincas nas pás do impelidor do 4º st e perda de espessura de parede das pás do impelidor do 3º st de compressão. Houve perda da confiabilidade de operação do equipamento, sendo necessária uma ação para correção do problema. Depois de identificado a causa raiz das trincas,foi decidida a compra de dois novos impelidores com modificações no material para aumentar a resistência à corrosão. Na aquisição dos novos impelidores havia duas possibilidades: 1) Adquirir novos impelidores junto ao fabricante original do equipamento; 2) Adquirir novos impelidores por processo de engenharia reversa (levantamento de desenhos da peça desgastada para fabricação de uma nova) em conjunto junto com empresa especializada. Este trabalho irá mostrar os critérios e considerações que levaram a AMT decidir pela compra de novos impelidores por “Engenharia Reversa”, bem como, suas vantagens e riscos assumidos.

A seafloor based robotic drilling system is being developed for the National Institute of Ocean Technology in Chennai, India to support a National initiative for marine methane hydrate research. The system will be capable of core sampling to 150m below the seafloor in 3000m of water under telemetric control of an operator onboard a research vessel at the surface. Unlike previous robotic drilling systems, this unit (designated the ACS) will use wireline methodology to reduce the number of tool handling operations required to complete the borehole (conventional rod drilling requires 2025 tool handling operations to complete a 100m hole, while wireline requires only 48 operations to reach the same depth).

This Bureau of Mines study estimates capital investment, operating costs, and selling prices for three underground bituminous mines producing coal with annual production ranging from 1.03 to 3.09 million tons. It is assumed that the mines have a 20-year life. Wages and union welfare payments are considered as of November 12, 1973, under the Bituminous Wage Agreement of 1971, and costs for material and equipment are based on 1973 indexes. Initial capital investment ranges from $12,938,200 for the 1.03-million-ton-per-year (MJ.Vl tpy) mine to $31,435,500 for the 3.09 MM tpy mine. Total capital investment ranges from $21,607,200 to $51,982,000 for the same mines. Corresponding selling prices for the coal range from $9.11 to $8.06 per ton, assuming a 12-percent discounted cash flow rate of return after Federal income taxes.

This report describes the initial feasibility, the development and the field demonstration of a system for shaft sinking employing a high energy mechanical impact rock breaker and a compatible muck disposal system. The increased shaft sinking rates, decreased costs and improved safety conditions obtainable by the elimination of the less efficient conventional drill-blast-muck cycles are discussed. Four shaft sinking concepts utilizing the impact rock breaker in various shaft configurations are developed and the field demonstration in a rectangular shaft is described. The progress achieved, the problems and their remedies and the proposed modifications to improve the machine are described.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health investigated how the starting of induction motors may cause nuisance tripping of short-circuit protection on coal mine power systems. This research had a dual purpose: 1) to identify how motor-start waveforms differ from those for short circuits and 2) to devise a method to provide short-circuit protection without intentional time delays to account for motor starts. This technology will help ensure that surface temperatures of energized electrical apparatus will not exceed gas or dust ignition thresholds when short circuits occur.

INTRODUCTION This paper report presents the general case history for the construction of the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS) project. A 1982 City of Los Angeles Wastewater Facilities Plan recognized that a 19.3 km (12¬mile) section of the North Outfall Sewer (NOS), from Culver City to the Hyperion Treatment Plant, was deteriorating and had insufficient capacity. Built in the 1920s of unreinforced concrete and lined with vitreous clay tiles, the originally unventilated NOS suffered considerable corrosion by H2S gas. This caused roof tile and concrete to fall to the bottom of the pipe, which, over the years, reduced the 11.9 M3/S (420 cubic feet per second (cfs)) design capacity of the NOS to a current level of approximately 8.5 M3/S (300 cfs). This worsening condition, thereby contributing to the polluting of Santa Monica Bay. This situation culminated in the State of California Regional Water Quality Control Board, Los Angeles Region, issuing a Cease and Desist Order on January 27, 1986, which required the City of Los Angeles to eliminate such dry weather overflows through a number of prescribed actions. One of these was to construct the North Outfall Replacement Sewer (NORS) by April 1, 1993. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The NORS Project involved the construction of over eight miles of tunnel and related structures. An on-line rheometer, suitable for use with slurries, has been developed at Michigan Technological University. This rheometer can be used with both Newtonian and non-Newtonian slurries, and produces complete shear-rate/shear stress curves which characterize the time-independent rheology of the slurry. The sensor utilizes the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and Boyle's Law to calculate the shear rate, slurry flowrate, and shear stress from a series of pressure measurements. The design of the unit allows the measurement sample to be continuously collected from operating process streams in the often-hostile on-line environment. The shear rate/shear stress curves can be used to conveniently calculate the apparent viscosity at any given shear rate, and also to measure any yield stress or other deviations from Newtonian behavior.

"Following the acquisition of grinding- circuit data at Brenda Mines Limited for simulation purposes, various methods to mass balance the circuit were evaluated. Unfortunately, different answers were obtained for different balancing methods. A data-adjustment procedure was therefore developed. The procedure assumes that all ""best-fit"" criterion. A search is conducted with the minimum set of water masses and narrow size ranges of solids around the circuit (called search variables), which permit the computation of any of the measured data points. Search variables are used to calculate measured values for an objective function of the form: [ ] where W, is a weighting factor•, M1 is a measured value and M. is a corresponding . value calculated from search vanables. The best values of M, are those which minimize R. The above method is compared with others that have been utilized for mass balancing circuits."
