China was the world’s leading producer of barite during 1995 with 35%. The United States followed with14%. India produced 9%. Other producers included Morocco, Turkey, Mexico and Germany. Domestic production of barite during 1995 was estimated to be 600 kt (660,000 st). Nevada produced 85% of the total. Georgia was the second leading barite-producing state. The United States is the world’s largest consumer of barite. During 1995, it used 1.6 Mt (1.8 million st). US reliance on imported barite during 1995 was about 63%of total consumption, according to the US Geological Survey.

The strutural and cr~stallo~aphic features of the plates of austenite produced by the martensite to aus-tenite or reverse martensitic tramformation have been determined in an Fe-33 wt pct Ni alloy. Micro-focus X-ray techniques and single-surface trace analysis 072 bulk samples yielded two distinct habit planes, (0.174, 0.309, 0.~35)~ and (0.375, 0.545, 0.749jM. The former plane uas the one predorninantly observed and its existence was verified by transn~ission electron microscopy. The orientation relation-ship between the reversed austenite and the parent martensite was approximately the same as the Nishiyamna and other relationships reported for the direct tramformation. Replica and thin-joil obser-vations show that both high densities of tangled dis-locations and occasional twins constitute the fine structure of the reversed austenite. Application of the phenomenological theory to a variant of the predominant habit plane defines an irrational plane and direction for the second shear in accordance with the comnplexity of the fine structure. The shear accompanying the reverse martensitic transformation is at least 0.51, the maximnum value of- the tangent oJ the tilt angle measured on surface replicas. A mechanism relating the fine transformation twins in martensite to the nucleation of reversed austenite of the predominant habit is proposed. The reversal of Fe-Ni martensite takes place both at the edges of martensite plates and in a piecewise fashion within them.' The shear-type nature of the reverse transformation is verified by the surface relief which accompanies both edge-type reversal2 and the fragmentation of plates of martensite' as a result of rapid heating above the A, (austenite start temperature). The orientation relationship between the edge-type reversal product and the parent martensite, as determined by transmission electron microscopy, is reported to be within 4 deg of either the Kurdyumov-Sachs or Nishiyama relationships,' but there is no work at present in the literature relating to the crystallography of the platelike reversed austenite. The fine structure of reversed austenite after heating to 50°C above the Af is reported4 to be composed primarily of tangled and jogged dislocations in concentrations up to 10" per sq cm. A replica investigation of partially reversed Fe-Ni martensites5 corroborates the increase in dislocation density following reversal and presents indications of other possible modes of fine structure. This paper reports on an investigation performed to examine in detail the morphology and crystallography of the plates of reversed austenite and the shear which accompanies their formation in a matrix of Fe-Ni martensite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Discs of a high-purity Fe-32.9 wt pct Ni single crystal served as the starting material. The single crystal had been produced in the course of an earlier investigation6 and the carbon content was determined at the time to be 0.006 wt pct. The M,, and the A,, were respectively -120" and 300°C. Partial transformation to martensite was performed at -125°C and reversal of some of the martensite was accomplished by heating in the temperature range 340" to 355°C. Most samples were heated to the reversal temperature by immersion' in a salt bath for 2 min. For surface-relief studies some polished and etched Samples were heated in a tube furnace for ten min in a hydrogen atmosphere maintained over the samples throughout the heating and cooling cycles. Samples were prepared for metallographic examination by electropolishing and etching with an HC1-HNOs-H20 et~hant.~ On one of the surface-relief samples two sets of fiducial scratches were placed on the etched sample by drawing it over a slurry of 0.06 p alumina on a "microclothJ'. The orientations of individual plates of martensite were determined by X-ray analysis. A Rigaku-Denki microbeam X-ray generator in conjunction with a Micro-Laue camera with facility for precision location of the sample in front of the beam was employed for this purpose. The collimator size was 30 p and the specimen to film distance was 5 mm. The Laue photograms were enlarged to an equivalent 3-cm specimen to film distance for analysis. The orientation of each of the plates of martensite was compared to that of the parent austenite and the relationship be -tween the two phases was, in all cases, within a few degrees of those predicted for the direct transformation. The orientation relationship between one of the larger plates of reversed austenite and its parent martensite was determined in a similar manner. The habit plane of the islands of reversed austenite in the X-rayed plates of martensite was determined by a single-surface trace analysis. Each reversal island had with the parent phase one comparatively straight boundary which was presumed to represent the habit plane trace. The pole locus technique7 was applied to traces from six different plates of martensite to determine the indices of the habit plane. A 40-cm stereographic net was employed for this analysis The morphology and fine structure of the reversed austenite were studied by electron microscopy of pre-shadowed direct carbon replicas,5 and the macroscopic shear was evaluated by a two-stage replica technique similar to that employed in electron fractog-

Coal, fly ash, and flue gas samples were analyzed for mercury (Hg) by double gold amalgamation-flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The purpose of the study was to elucidate the fate of the trace mercury in the coal when the coal is burned. Samples were collected from a bench-scale 100-g/hr combustor, a 500-lb/hr combustor, and three coal-burning powerplants. In all cases mercury was found in the fly ash. The amounts ranged from about 9 to about 70 percent of the mercury in the coal that was burned.

It is unnecessary to repeat here the contents of many valuable contributions to this subject which have appeared in the Dansactions and in the publications of the U. S. Geological Survey. As a basis for the further suggestions of this paper, the following are the most important: 1. The investigation of J. R. Don,' showing the gold of certain Australasian veins to have been deposited by ascending solutions, and not by lateral secretion. 2. The theory of Prof. Posepny? distinguishing the vadose from the deep circulation, and ascribing the origin of certain classes of ore-deposits to ascending solutions of the latter class. 3. The theory of Prof. Van Hise,3 as to the underground circulation and the primary enrichment of veins thereby. 4. The paper of Prof. J. F. Kemp,4 showing that ore-deposits are largely the products of " expiring vulcanism." Many. of Prof. Kemp's ideas have been widely adopted by mining men. 5. The theory of secondary enrichment, so lucidly expounded by Mr. S. F. Emmons.V his theory, dealing with the rearrangement of ore-bodies after primary mineralization, has been generally adopted, and seems to me to have been as completely proved as the nature of the case permits. "INTRODUCTION In view of the large tonnage of low-grade iron ore and iron-bearing material known to exist at the western limits of the Gogebic range, the Bureau of Mines undertook an investigation of the area for the purpose of evaluating the iron-bearing formations as sources of iron for possible future utilization.After 6o years of exploration an, development on the Gogebic range, the area investigated by the Bureau represents the known western limit of direct-shipping ore mined from operations on the Gogebic range.An area about 2 miles in length between the villages of Pence and Iron Bolt in Iron County, Vic., was selected for investigation, and trenches wore excavated through the overburden and fully across the iron-bearing formation to obtain 108 bulk samples for beneficiation tests. Exhaustive tests involving gravity and flotation methods, magnetic separation, and magnetizing roasts followed by magnetic separation were conducted on the samples to determine the ammability of the individual formations and the entire iron-bearing zone to beneficiation.Empirical data on the character and mineral content of the formations arc tabulated herein, as well as the results of the beneficiation tests."

In order to simulate a grinding circuit, it is necessary to obtain valid mathematical models of the grinding mills and classifiers in the circuit. Several models of grinding mills Ova been proposed 1,2,3 and models of cyclone classifiers are available 4,5. Those models developed by Lynch et. al. 3,5 have been tested in the plant, so that some degree of reliability can be placed on them. Because of this, it is reasonable to assume that the Lynch models will apply for a given circuit, and then to test this assumption. Empirical modifications are made as necessary for a given situation. Usually, valid simulation models can be modified slightly to provide control models6,7. The purpose of this paper is to describe the results of an approach taken by Mular8 to obtain the Lynch models of parallel cyclone classifiers being used in the A-circuit of the new Strathcona Mill***.This was one of the projects undertaken by the fourth year Metallurgical Engineering Class of 1969, Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, as part of their process design course which cooperates closely with the Canadian metallurgical industry.

The prevention of accidents is considered a necessity at all branches and divisions of the Phelps Dodge Corporation copper-producing operations, and since there is a continual exchange of data on safety accomplishments between the various units, their safety programs are fundamentally similar. Variations in accident-prevention methods result from a difference in emphasis rather than from a difference in the elements themselves. The main copper-producing operations of the corporation ore conducted in Arizona and distributed as follows: Copper Queen Branch, mines division, Fisbee, and smelter division, Douglas, Aria.; Morenci Branch, mines division, Morenci, and smelter division, Clifton, Ariz.; New Cornelia Branch, Ajo, Ariz.; and United Verde Branch, mines division, Jerome, and smelter division, Clarkdale Ariz. As it is not feasible to describe here the safety programs of all branches and divisions, the program at the Clarkdale smelter has been selected for discussion. The United Verde Brach includes the mine and smelter purchased by the Phelps Dodge Corporation in February 1935 from the United Verde Copper Co. The mine at Jerome and the reduction works at Clarkdale are designated, respectively, as the mine and smelter divisions.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the resource potential of 201 mines and deposits in 28 market economy countries and 17 mines and deposits in the U.S.S.R. and China. The 201 mines and deposits evaluated from market economy countries contain an estimated 34.2 billion metric tons of recoverable phosphate rock (at the demonstrated resource level), with Morocco and Western Sahara accounting for 61% (21 billion tons), followed by the United States with 19% (6.4 billion tons). The 17 mines and deposits evaluated in the U.S.S.R. and China contain approximately 1.5 billion tons of potentially recoverable phosphate rock. Potential annual capacity from low-cost, high-grade producing mines in the United States is estimated to decline significantly during the latter half of the next decade, and the United States will have to develop new, higher cost, lower grade mines in order to satisfy demand into the next century. Of the world's new production capacity which could likely be developed over the next decade, slightly over one-third could be produced at an estimated 1981 cost of $40 per ton or less, and about two-thirds would cost in the $40 to $50 range (including a 15% rate of return). In comparison, moot of the competing phosphate rock from producing mines in Morocco could be produced for under $40 per ton. The United States has sufficient demonstrated resources of phosphate rock (plus huge quantities at the identified and hypothetical resource levels) to satisfy domestic consumption for many years to come, but its future ability to compete in the major export markets against low-cost competitors is much more uncertain.

In a consideration of the various means whereby more economical and more efficient use may be made of the fuels in the United States, the possibility of obtaining for the production of illuminating gas other and cheaper fuels than the Pennsylvania coals demands attention. For the Government, as well as for private corporations and the householder, there can be no more economical and efficient way of using some coals than through the medium of illuminating gas. In the stove, gas reduces the labor cost of heat production and lessens the drudgery of the kitchen; burned in the Welsbach mantle, it is an excellent and cheap illuminant. In addition, the coke that remains after the gas has been recovered furnishes a smokeless fuel that has about the same heating value as anthracite. Hence any investigations that will indicate how local coals through proper treatment may be substituted for the higher priced and rapidly vanishing Pennsylvania gas coals will bring about lower prices for both gas and coke and will also aid to conserve for use in metallurgical processes the coking coals of Pennsylvania and of ot,her States. The annual drain on the gas-coal resources of this country and the importance of the gas and coke industries are indicated by the fact that 8,390,129 tons of coal were carbonized in retorts in the United States in 1909. The resulting salable products from by-product ovens were 15,791,220,000 cubic feet of coal gas, 6,254,644 tons of coke, and 60,126,000 gallons of tar. The total value of all by-products was about $28,508,637.

The quality of the liquid metal has the biggest influence on the quality of the final products. In the metallurgical industry, and especially in aluminium production the refining process is the important technological stage. Today the most popular are refining reactors with impellers like URO ? 200, which can generate small gas bubbles. A rotary impeller also makes the metal bath to be stirred well. There are two basic hydrodynamic parameters: the flow rate of refining gas and the mixing of refining gas (impeller rotation) that influence metal stirring and generating small gas bubbles. The paper presents the influence of the flow rate of refining gas on the hydrogen removal process from aluminium (final hydrogen concentration), taking into consideration the refining process of AlSi7Mg alloy and using URO - 200. The mathematical model of this process is also presented. The equation needed for calculation of the final hydrogen concentration as a function of the equivalent bubble diameter is shown. Basing on this equation the calculations of bubble diameter and optimal refining time are done. This paper presents the physical model (the water one) of aluminium refining process and the gas dispersion taking into account the fact that the gas flow rate is changing from 2,5 to 17,5 l/min and the impeller speed is changing from 0 to 400 rpm. Schemes of gas dispersion in liquid metal in comparison with the model data are shown and the optimal values of the gas flow rate and the impeller speed are chosen.

Komatsu America has introduced its 2-MW (2,700-hp), 930E-3 ac electric drive truck with a 290-t(320-st) capacity. The truck is designed to provide increased productivity, lower cost per ton hauled and improved speed and control. The 930E-3 is powered by a Komatsu SSDA16Vl6016-cylinder engine. It is capable of speeds up to 65 km/h(40 mph) and is a 15-percent to 20-percent more productive unit than 218-t (240-st) trucks, at a lower operating cost per ton. The 930E-3 also provides enough torque and speed to get up and off ramps easier than mechanically driven trucks. And it can climb at altitudes up to 3,650 m(12,000 ft) without any fuel deration.

This work describes the effect of the degree of energy transferred to the pulp, during the conditioning stage, on gold flotation fines recovery, grade and kinetics, with three types of frother (Dowfroth 250, pine oil and MIBC) and amyl xanthate as collector. Best results show an increase in 24% recovery and 50% in concentrate grade, depending on the intensity of conditioning and type of frother (better with Dowfroth 250). For low or intermediate energies (0.5-1.5 kWhlm3 pulp), the fine particles adhere to larger ones, increasing the recovery due to a mixture of carrier (pyrite, in this case) and autogeneous carrier flotation and at higher shear (2-3 kWhlm3 pulp), gold fine particles aggregate themselves. These phenomena are demonstrated by measurements of flotation rate, true flotation (flotation by actual particle-bubble adhesion), and by the amount of entrained particles. Alternatives for this type of pulp conditioning and mechanisms involved are discussed.

The Bureau of Mines conducted research to evaluate superplastic behavior in commercial magnesium-base alloys AZ6IA, ZK60A, ZW3, AZ3IB, ZWI, and an experimental Mg-12 pct Al alloy. Strain-rate sensitivity indices (m-values), maximum elongations, and effects of superplastic elongation on tensile properties were determined on fine-grained sheet. Inert-gas-pressure hemisphere-forming tests were conducted on selected sheet stock of the five alloys. Formability trials on AZ31B alloy sheet were conducted on industrial equipment for comparison with commercial superplastic forming of Zn-AI alloy. Closed-die-forming tests were performed on extruded ZK60A rod. All alloys exhibited well over 100-pct elongation, indicating superplasticity, at temperatures and strain rates near the maximum m-values. Tensile properties were generally reduced following 100-pct superplastic elongation, but not to an extent that would preclude use of the commercial alloys in the superplastically deformed condition. The potential for industrial superplastic forming of AZ31B sheet was indicated by hemisphere forming in the laboratory and substantiated in industrial forming trials.

A combination of a slurry trench with dewatering successfully controlled groundwater for a large sloped excavation immediately adjacent to the Arkansas River. The Murray Hydro Electric Project required excavation through sand and gravel to bedrock, 85 feet below high water in the River. The perimeter system of deep wells pumping up to 25,000 GPM (1,600 1/sec) lowered the water level to 15 feet (4.6 m) above bedrock. A short soil/bentonite slurry trench near the toe of the slope cut off the residual head. The method cut six weeks from the critical path. Design of the slopes and the dewatering system demanded high safety factors because of risk to existing Lock and Dam No. 7. A localized pocket of soft organic clay was supported by a rock filled bolster. A major flood event was successfully withstood. The method can be applied to large civil excavations and open pit mines.

On January 1, 1959, the United States had 313 petroleum refineries with a total installed crude-oil throughput capacity of 9,819,846 barrels per day, according to the Bureau of Mines annual survey. Compared with a year ago, this represents a net decreased of five in the number of slants mild a net increase in capacity of 412,139 barrels per day. The continued increase in total capacity and decrease in number of plants raised the average capacity of a refinery to a new high of 31,373 barrels per day. During 1958 total capacity increased in every refining district except the Louisiana Gulf district, which showed a 2-percent decrease due mainly to the retirement of the American Oil Company's plant at Destrehan, La. The largest increase, 14 percent, occurred in the Texas Inland district followed by a 12-percent increase in the Arkansas-Louisiana Inland district. At the beginning of 1959 the industry was building facilities that would add 108,400 barrels per day to crude-oil capacity. It also had under construction a capacity of 226,100 barrels per day as replacement. On January 1, 1959, no new refineries were under construction.

Posteriormente se realizaron pruebas como la del carbón R.O.M. en una planta Bradford improvisada, demostrando que el carbón y los "middlings", se trituran fácilmente gracias a la friabilidad del mismo y que el producto de tamaño mayor puede ser escogido a mano fácilmente para su disposición futura. Mientras que las pruebas de diversas clases de "middlings", evidencian dificultad en el tratamiento para la recuperación de carbón puro, pues el triturado a tamaños finos libera sólo pequeñas cantidades de carbón "float", manteniéndo su calidad inferior en comparación con los finonaturales, que se trituran fácilmente del R.O.M. y del producto de la planta Bradford. De otro lado, se describe el beneficio del carbón en las minas, la conservación de maquinaria, uso de briquetas, el empleo del ferrocarril como transporte y las instalaciones de las plantas lavadoras del banco minero en Chimbote y planta pallasca en Chimbote.

D.G. Wilder I found the suggestion that the amount of displacement of a fault can be numerically related to the thickness of gouge or breccia to be both intuitively satisfying and intriguing. I have long agreed that there is some type of relationship between the amount of gouge and the amount of displacement of faults. I congratulate the author for developing a numerical relationship between them. However, I am concerned that the limits for applying this relationship be fully understood. An underlying assumption in this approach is that there is either a uniform thickness of gouge or breccia along a given fault or the thickness does not vary widely. Since it is not always possible to confirm this, the displacements derived by this method should be viewed with caution unless significant fault extent can be observed. At the Nevada Test Site, in drifts constructed in granite for test emplacement of spent nuclear reactor fuel, we found a fault with 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) of clay gouge. Within a few meters of this location, the fault had no clay gouge, but rather consisted of a highly fractured zone with significantly altered rock and some slickensides. Based on Fig. 1, the 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) thickness of gouge would indicate a displacement in excess of 30 m (98 ft). However, no gouge thickness would indicate essentially no displacement. Based on a quartz vein that terminated on the fault, and is not identified nearby, an estimated displacement of more than a few meters was made. This estimate is consistent with that obtained using the regression line proposed in the paper if the 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) thickness for the gouge is used. However, using the regression curves with zero thickness would not yield results consistent with what was observed in the field. Therefore, it is important to recognize that the suggested procedure would properly yield a range of probable displacements. ? *Work performed under the auspices of the US Department of Energy by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory under Contract W-7405-Eng-48. Reply by E.C. Robertson It is certainly true that the t (thickness) of gg-bx (gouge and breccia) on a fault does vary along the fault. My observations have been that near the termination of a fault, the displacement d is small and the t is also small, whereas the maximum d and t will usually be found in the central part of the fault. The information on gg-bx and t of the fault found in granite in the NTS tunnel by Mr. Wilder could be interpreted somewhat differently than he does. He speaks of the fault changing within a few meters from 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) of clay gg to "a highly fractured zone with significantly altered rock and some slickensides," but no gg. The highly fractured rock may be taken to be bx, rock not so finely ground as gg but still crushed by the fault movement, equivalent to the gg in my usage, and probably occupying about the same t. Mr. Wilder's estimates for the fault in the NTS tunnel for t of 0.3 to 0.4 m (12 to 16 in.) and for d of a quartz vein, in excess of "a few meters," would place the point on the low side of the central trend line in my Fig. 1, at the lower limit. There is, of course, a problem with determining d using displacement of only one planar surface. It would be greater or lesser depending on the rake of the movement. Finally, estimating the d of a fault from its t should be made with awareness of our present uncertainties, as pointed out by Mr. Wilder. Although the central trend line in my Fig. 1 has a ratio of d/t of 100, I have put the limiting ratios at 10 and 1000. Understanding of the values of the ratio will be improved only with collection of more data, for which the discussion of Mr. Wilder is much appreciated. G.C. Waterman E.C. Robertson's paper provides significant information to a geologist attempting to deduce fault offset by noting the products of structural dislocation. However, considerable mapping in underground and open-pit mines, and examination of structures produced in different geological settings, have convinced me that gouge and breccia thickness are controlled by geological conditions and fault movement. The following paragraphs suggest geological variables that control them. 1. Depth of Loading A near-surface fault resulting from tensional stress has more breccia/gouge than is produced by a similar stress at considerable depth. A deep-loaded compressional stress may produce a linear zone of schist, or structural dislocation may occur along an earlier formed belt of schist. Such "shear zones" are common in Canadian mines in precambrian rocks. In neither case can offset be directly deduced by an analysis of the minimal gouge/breccia in the shistose rocks. At greater depth, stress may be partially to wholly relieved by flowage. I vividly recall first noting the regional "Midas Thrust" in the Lark mine, Bingham Mining District, UT (where we called the structure the North Fault). My recorded notes, as I remember them, showed a narrow gouge streak separated the `Jordan" and "Commercial" limestone units from impure, muddy limestone beds of uncertain stratigraphic position. ALABAMA'S mineral industry continued to expand. This was a record year for many commodities, with expansion in almost all industries. New records were established for the production of native asphalt, fixe clay, miscellaneous clay, kaolin, bentonite, lime, scrap mica, salt, sand and gravel, crushed limestone, crushed marble, and tale. Among the States, Alabama ranked second in the production of bauxite, third in the production of scrap mica and native asphalt, and fifth in iron ore. The mineral industry of Alabama was dominated by the mining and processing of coal and stone, the manufacture of cement, and the production of crude petroleum, which together comprised 87 percent of the total value of production, compared with 86 percent in 1963. The iron ore industry continued to decline. This was the first year in which consumption of imported iron ore exceeded the consumption of domestic iron ore. The coal industry recovered from the slump caused by the abandonment of red iron ore mining by United States Steel Corp., and production expanded 17 percent, for the best year in coal mining since 1948. During the year, the one-billionth ton of coal was mined within the State.
