Since the initiation of continuous vacuum filtration over a half a century ago, control of the performance of these units has been largely in the hands of the plant operators, Obviously there has been the introduction of variable speed drives, adjustable speed feed slurry agitation, vacuum control, etc. However, control of , filtration rate, cake moisture content, dissolved solids recovery by cake washing and dryness of solids where thermal drying is practiced is primarily up to the operators judgment and the settings he imposes on the controls he regulates, - filter cycle time, submergence, vacuum level, filter medium condition, wash water- rate, and other such factors. While this may seem to indicate that good operators are a paramount necessity, and certainly always desirable, a considerably more vital factor is a properly designed filter and filter station for the particular application. With improper design, highly skilled operator control will still leave much to be desired in the way of process performance. On the other hand, with correct design and application, the operator can easily and quickly control normal plant surges and quality variations within the flow sheet. Due to the growing complexity and inter dependency between the various processing steps in the modern flow sheet as well as the rising costs of capital investment, labor, maintenance, and losses involved with off quality product or insufficient recovery, automatic or inherent performance control of many of the unit operations within the metallurgical mill must be achieved. Continuous filtration should and can be susceptible to such control. However, as every instrument engineer knows, before control and automation can be achieved, a basic understanding of the operation is mandatory. This is primarily due to three factors. First, as in so many control applications, it may not be possible or feasible to measure the factor that it is desired to control. Thus, secondary variables that influence the major factor are substituted for control purposes. Secondly, it is always desirable to take advantage of any ?self-regulation? within the operation being performed on the equipment. In so doing, not only will automatic control be facilitated, but instrumentation is minimized while experiencing most efficient operation. Finally, automatic control is not a cure-all for improper process and equipment design and application. Hanging instruments on such an operation can be compared to constructing a sizable building on sand, Results will be disappointing.

The 5180 m EPBM drive on the Lower Olentangy Tunnel (LOT) is predominantly within glacial overburden. To connect LOT with the existing OARS deep tunnel in limestone bedrock, the upper 15 m inside diameter Vine Street retrieval shaft telescopes down to 6.7 m in diameter and extends into the karstic Columbus Limestone to a depth of 51 m, where a 104 m SEM tunnel will connect to OARS shaft 6. Pre-excavation grouting was reuired prior to lower shaft excavation to reduce potentially high groundwater inows. This paper discusses the secant pile installation, grouting program, shaft excavation, and hydrogeologic observations.

BRINSMADE, Puebla, Puebla, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*) :-As I have previously considered the general equations for mine-valuation,1 I will here discuss only that part of Mr. Finlay's paper criticized by E. E. White, along with some of the general principles of mining taxation, under the following six topics: 1. Rate of interest earned by sinking-fund. 2. Rate of interest earned by investment. 3. Place of royalty item in valuation. 4. Place of taxation item in valuation. 5. Calculation of future ore-prices. 6. Valuation of undeveloped mining land. 1. Rate of Interest Earned by Sinking-Fund.-Mr. Denny's quoted opinion of a 3 per cent. rate is evidently based on English conditions before the Boer war. The great destruction of liquid capital by the great wars and catastrophes since 1897, along with the flood of gold and consequent rise in the average index of commodity prices, has undoubtedly increased the rate of interest at least one-half per cent. In the United States sound savings banks now allow 4 per cent. on deposits, while safe bonds are quoted at prices which yield even 5 per cent.. 2. Rate of interest Earned by Investment.-Gold-mines with uncertain and scanty ore reserves, the objects of Mr. Denny's quoted remarks, are quite different from iron,. copper, or coal mines with definite mineral reserves blocked out ahead by drilling or driving. While 10 per cent is often all inadequate yield from gold-mines, the latter class of mines are often, as safe as city real estate and resemble it as an investment in more ways than one.

"INTRODUCTION The purpose of the investigation discussed in this article was to evaluate the toxic hazard from gases produced when thermosetting plastic materials used for electrical insulating purposes are burned or thermally decomposed in enclosed spaces. For brevity the term ""toxicity"" is used throughout the article to refer to the nature of gases produced under these conditions. A need for immediate study of the problem was created as a re¬sult of the battle damage reports received from various United States Fleet units. These indicated that the fumes emitted when these materials were burned or thermally decomposed had, in several instances, resulted in toxic atmospheres. In attempting to develop a suitable test method for evaluating toxicity, it was recognized that no single test procedure could be expected to duplicate the variety of conditions that might exist in an actual fire aboard ship. In view of the immediate need, however, it was felt that considerable information could be obtained, at least to classify comparatively the several types of materials as to the toxic effect caused by burning or thermal decomposition, through the development of a sound empirical method which could be applied to all of the materials. On this basis, it was decided to modify the Navy flame resistance test for thermosetting plastics to render it applicable to the determination of the toxic, gases evolved when this test was employed. A wide variety of materials was tested, both molded and laminated, to cover the types commonly used by the Navy in electrical applications. Toxicity determinations were conducted at the Bureau of Mines Central Experiment Station, Pittsburgh, Pa. Parallel tests, to determine the flame resistance of the materials, were conducted at the Material Laboratory, U. S. Navy Yard, New York, N. Y."

"The benefits and advantages of pre-competitive, collaborative industry/university research are not always well appreciated. This paper presents the case study of a current collaborative project between CAMIRO-Metallurgical Processing Division and McGill University that is investigating the understanding and prevention of sphalerite activation in lead and copper-lead flotation circuits. The benefits of the research findings to the sponsors can be maximized by an approach which links the researchers themselves with the sponsors at frequent, interactive project review sessions. Some examples of the findings and their application to industry are also presented along with a general update on CAMIRO-MPD.INTRODUCTIONThe history of Canadian efforts in the area of collaborative pre-competitive research is not long when compared to Australia (AMIRA) and Britain (MIRO). AMIRA (Australian Mineral Industry Research Association) began over 40 years ago and has had a well recognized role in bringing together industrial sponsors and researchers to fund a large variety of very significant development projects in that country, The total AMIRA funding effort for mineral processing work currently exceeds some $Aus 40 million with new projects valued at about $Aus 12 million initiated each year. This high level of commitment by industry has contributed to establishing Australian researchers and their facilities as among the best in the world.Canadian companies have traditionally funded much of their R & D in-house with extensive facilities and large funding commitments. The past 2 decades have seen most of these facilities disappear. The current situation is one in which only the largest integrated metal and mining companies have retained their own R & D groups (e.g. INCO, Falconbridge, Noranda). Industry-funded research at universities was primarily through individual efforts by the mining companies and rarely included collaboration with other mining companies, equipment or chemical suppliers, or engineering firms."

The Bureau of Mines fired seven test blasts in a 22-ft bench of limestone, screening the material to investigate the influence of explosive type and between row delays on fragmentation. Four 4-hole, single-row test shots were conducted evaluating dynamite, ANFO, emulsion, and a 60-40 emulsion-ANFO mix. Three 12-hole shots, with three rows of 4-holes, evaluated delays between rows of 24, 36, and 120 ms. Accurate in-hole electronic delays were used, firing within 1.5-ms of the nominal delay. All seven shots had a 6- to 7-ft burden, 10-ft spacing, with a hole diameter of 3-1/2 in fired on a 12-ms delay between holes in the row. The tests were instrumented with strain gauges grouted in the burden region examining stress wave and gas pressure effects. Fiber optic probes were used to confirm timing and to obtain detonation velocities.

THE latest metal-mine accident report available for the United States is that of the Bureau of Mines for the calendar year 1919. Quoting from Table 20, p. 53, of that report, we find that there were 468 men killed, 7 permanently totally disabled, 321 permanently partially disabled, 7848 injured seriously (more than 14 days disability), and 23,330 of 1 to 14 days disability. We have no records to show what the average days lost per case of accident is, but the records for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. show that, leaving out the fatalities and total permanent disabilities, and counting those in which the lost time was one or more days, the actual days lost due to accidents, for the Butte mines and shops for five years, 1917-1921, were as follows: Accident Statistics, Butte Mines and Shops of A. The figure of $70 per case was obtained by dividing the total amount paid by metal-mining companies under Plan No. 1 of the Montana Compensation Law, for the first five years of its operation, by the total number of serious accidents for those years.

The steady-state creep characteristics of pure polycrystalline copper were studied in the temperature range 400" to 950°C and in the stress range 400 to 7000 psi. Tests were conducted in dry deoxidized hydrogen and all specimens exhibited high ductility before fracture. Two activation energies for creep were established as a function of temperature. Above about T/T, = 0.65, the activation energy for creep was 48,000 cal per mole whereas between 0.5 and 0.65 T, it was 28,000 cal per mole. The observed temperature dependence of the activation energy for creep follows the same trend as exhibited by the self-diffusion coefficient of copper in copper single crystals and silver in silver single crystals. It is therefore believed that the rate-cmtrolling mechanism in creep of copper in the stress and temperature range studied is diffusion-dependent and is probably associated with a dislocation-climb process. The low activation-energy region is attributed to enhanced volume difFusion from the presence of dislocations which act as short-circuit paths for diffusion. THERE is extensive experimental evidence1,2 that the activation energy for creep, Q,, for pure poly-crystalline metals tested at temperatures above one half the absolute melting temperature (0.5 Tm) is a constant and equal to the activation energy for volume self-diffusion, Qsd This equality is generally interpreted as meaning that creep in this temperature range is controlled by a dislocation-climb process. The existence of high-temperature creep activation energies not equal to the respective self-diffusion values has been suggested both theoretically3"5 and experimentally.6-8 Two examples of apparent nonequality between Q, and Qsd have been reported for the cases of silver7 and copper,' where activation energies for creep much lower than those for self-diffusion persist to rela- tively high temperatures (up to 0.6 T,). These observations suggest that dislocation climb may not be the only important process in the high-temperature deformation of these metals. That dislocation climb does indeed occur relatively slowly in these two metals due to their low stacking-fault energy has been suggested by many investigators.9-10 Although the creep behavior of copper has been studied extensively at low temperatures, the high-temperature activation energy for creep is not well-defined. The data of Feltham and Meakin8 indicated that Q, is temperature-dependent above one half the melting temperature, equaling a value of -30,000 cal per mole at temperatures up to 550°C and increasing to a value of -49,000 cal per mole at 700°C. No data has been reported above 700°C. The value of 49,000 cal per mole is very near the value of Qsd for copper reported by Kuper et al." as 47,100 cal per mole. In view of the lack of high-temperature creep data and the apparent temperature dependence of Q, for copper the present investigation was undertaken to determine the value of Q, over the temperature range of 400" to 950°C. It was hoped that such a study would clearly document the temperature dependence of Q, and yield significant information as to the nature of the rate-controlling creep mechanisms. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES The material used in this investigation was high-purity OFHC copper. After rolling and recrystal-lization treatments spectrographic and chemical analyses showed only 0.0008 pct Ag, 0.0002 pctCa, 0.0002 pct H2, and 0.002 pct O2 as trace impurities indicating a purity of greater then 99.995 pct. Specimens were machined from cold-rolled sheet and the gage sections polished with 2/0 emery paper prior to annealing treatments. Annealing was done in both vacuum and dry deoxidized hydrogen atmospheres. No variation in creep strength was found as a result of the different annealing atmospheres. The final annealing temperature was either 700°, 800°, or 1000°C depending on the temperature range to be studied. It is stated that the specific character of SPHTS specimens of TiCx consists in crystal lattice strength reflecting the condition of synthesis in ?burning wave?. The use of roentgenographic and other methods of analysis allow to estimate the effect of the conditions of synthesis causing the carbon sablattice defect on the grinding intensity of TiCx -phases. The study of the kinetics of vibratory grinding of TiCx -phases in ethanol and benzene medium allows to establish high grinding intensity of the phases close to stoichiometry and the possibility of producing high dispersion powders (Ssp 4.5-6 m2/g).

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted studies using microwave energy to stress-crack iron ores. In a microwave chamber which simulates a continuous throughput operation, the Bond grindability of a taconite sample was improved by 13 pct at a bulk temperature of 197? C. To further improve the economics of microwave fracturing, higher powers up to 16 kW were used to rapidly heat samples to relatively low temperatures in a continuous belt-fed applicator. A significant enhancement of grindability was obtained with a minus 1.9-cm taconite rod mill feed. At a sample temperature of 130? C, the grindability was improved a maximum of 26.1 pct over the non-microwaved sample.

"Solution of most engineering problems requires, in addition to vast ·numerical calculations, substantial use of practical judgement and expertise. With advances in applied mathematics and computer technology, the numerical aspects of problem solution have reached a considerable level of maturity; However; it is only .recently that approaches like the expert systems methodology have been developed to ·incorporate the Judgemental aspects as well. For rapid development and prototying of expert systems, expert system building tools or ""shells"" have become widely available. For the expert system developer, identification of the key characteristics of the problem domain and selection of the right expert system tool are of crucial importance. In this paper, the important attributes required in an expert system shell for use in the development or a mine ventilation planning expert system are discussed. These attributes are general in that most engineering problems in mining would have these requirements. Also, the results of an exercise undertaken to evaluate commercially available shells for application to mining engineering problems are presented.INRODUCTIONExpert systems (ES) are interactive computer programs which use high quality specialized knowledge in some narrow problem domain to solve complex problems in that domain. These complex problems lack structured and/or standard ways of solution and involve substantial use of subjective and experience based knowledge. One of the first expert systems was MYCIN, developed in 1974, in which subjective and heuristic knowledge of expert physicians was used to diagnose infectious diseases and provide antimicrobial therapy (Buchanan arid Shortliffe, 1984). Since MYCIN, expert systems applications have appeared in other areas such as mineral prospecting (Gaschnig, 1982), configuration of computers (McDermott, 1982) and structural engineering (Bennett and Englemore, 1979)."

The resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, stability at 200°C, and structure of annealed Si-Cr films have been studied as a function of film cowposition. Colorimetric analyses of the films indicated 20 to 60 wt pct Cr over the resistivity range of 1 to 10-4 ohm-cm. Resistors were delinealed by photolithographic etching, contacted with aluminum, and mounted in TO-5 packages. The average temperature coefjicient of resistance, a, between 50" and 150°C is related empirically to the film resistivity, p, by a (ppm per °C) = -2900 - 1140 log p (ohm-cm). Near a resistivity of 3.5 x 10-3 ohm-ctn (30 at. pct Cr) , the temperature coefficient changes from positive to negative. The temperature at which the resistance maximum occurs increases with decreasing resistivity. The conduction mechanism between —196" and +360 C appears to have two components—an activated conduction dominating a1 lord chromium content and higher temperatures and a linearly temperature-dependent conduction dominating at high chromium content and low temperatures. Electron diffraction patterns showed the films to consist of Cr3Si and amorphous silicon. Resistors thicker than 150A typically drifted less than 0.6 pct after 5000 hr stor-age at 200°C. Resistors as thin as approxinzately 80°A that had a silicon overlayer showed similar stability. Such films had sheet resistivities of 10 kilohm per square and temperature coefficients near —600 ppm per "c. THIN-FILM resistors having sheet resistivities greater than 1 kilohm per square are required in many integrated circuit applications. A process for producing such resistors should be compatible with present circuit fabrication and packaging, including exposure to maximum temperatures of 300° to 570°C during contact alloying, die-attach, and ceramic package sealing. In addition, the resistors should have a low temperature coefficient of resistance and change less than 1 pct during storage at temperatures up to 200°C for 1000 hr or longer. Reports of work beginning in 1949 at Battelle Memorial Institute indicated that, among other materials, the silicides of chromium, Cr-Co, molybdenum, tantalum, and tungsten were worthy of further study as high-stability resistive films. Later work on Si-Cr films vacuum-deposited by flash evaporation from a tungsten boat1 led to the conclusion that Si-Cr had "excellent properties for development into high- stability ... resistive elements". More recently, Si-Cr films have been vacuum-deposited from a tantalum boat,2 from a BeO-coated tantalum boat,3 by flash evaporation from an electron-beam-heated tungsten Source,4 and by triode sputtering.5 This paper describes a study of Si-Cr films vacuum-deposited by electron-beam heating of Si-Cr alloys. Resistivity, temperature coefficient of resistance, stability at 200°C, and structure were studied as a function of film composition. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Film Deposition. Si-Cr sources were prepared by vacuum-melting pressed pellets of mixtures of powdered chromium (99.9 pct, -100 mesh, Lunex Co., Pleasant Valley, Iowa) and silicon (99.99 pct, -325 mesh, United Mineral and Chemical Co., New York). A permanent-magnet focused electron-beam gun having a water-cooled copper crucible was used to heat the pellet until complete melting occurred. The mixture was then kept molten for an additional 5 min. The alloy thus formed was used as the source material for Si-Cr film depositions using the same electron-beam gun. Pieces of semiconductor-grade silicon ingots were used as sources for silicon depositions. The films were deposited within a standard vacuum evaporator having an 18-in.-diam Pyrex bell jar, a liquid-nitrogen-cooled trap, and a Consolidated Vacuum Corp. 6-in. diffusion pump containing Dow Corning DC-705 pump fluid. Discussion of the paper of Mr. Granger, presented at the New Haven meeting, February, 1909, and published in Bulletin No. 25, January, 1909, pp. 1 to 37. LEWIS M. HAUPT, Philadelphia, Pa. (communication to the 'Secretary*) :-This subject is of great interest to me, and I am noting progress and conditions as a test of my own judgment in advocating what I believed to be the nearer, cheaper and better route at Nicaraugua. I have as yet learned nothing to change my views, or modify the convictions which led me to retire from the Commission; but that is not the issue to-day. Our government is committed to the Panama route, and is bound to " make good." There are many points presented by Mr. Granger which seem to me worthy of very serious consideration. But when all is said there remains the risk of seismic convulsions, to which either form of canal is subject; and I fail to see that the risk would be reduced by making the cut deeper, with greater surcharge of lateral pressure upon the side walls. A severe earthquake in the rainy season would doubtless close either type of canal. One of the arguments in favor of the Panama route most insisted on, was that Nature had provided good natural harbors at its termini. Recalling this, it has interested me to note that the cost of creating the necessary harbors is estimated at $27,000,000. Mr. Granger refers to this, and quotes the Board's report to the effect that, on the Atlantic side, it will require 5 miles of jetties to " make an excellent harbor out of a wretched one." The vulnerable part of Mr. Granger's paper seems to me to lie in the admission that the plant required is still in the embryonic stage, and that at least one machine should be built and tested " to demonstrate that the theoretical strains and forces work out in practice exactly as expected." William Kent, New York, N. Y.:—The Institute may congratulate itself on the opportunity of reading the splendid address of President Brunton. It is an admirable summary of the progress that has been made in the mining and metallurgical arts in recent years. The paper rightly gives the chief credit for this progress to the aid which has been rendered to these arts by the advances in mechanics, chemistry, and electricity. It is notable that most of the headings in Mr. Brunton's address refer to the work of the mechanical engineer, the electrical engineer, and the chemist, rather than to that of the specialist in mining-operations. It seems that the most successful mining engineer of the present day is the one who makes the most intelligent application of the inventions and designs of engineers and others who are not directly engaged in mining. A tabulation of the headings of the address, grouped as below, shows this most clearly. Work of the Mechanical Engineer—Rock-drills, hoisting-machinery, tramming, pumping, ventilation, dredging, Sampling, concentration, briquetting, fume-recovery. Work of the Electrical Engineer—Electric machinery for hoisting, pumping, tramming, lighting and signaling, electric transmission, electric smelting. Work of the Chemist and Metallurgist—Explosives, chlorina-tion, cyanidation, roasting, lead-smelting, and copper-smelting. Work of the Geologist—Economic geology. Work of the Mining Engineer—Mine-mapping, surface-mining, timbering, tunneling; and planning and supervision of the work in general. ASFINAG is responsible for the construction and operation of the Austrian highway system. It is approx. 2,400 km of highways and 65 tunnels with a total length of 200 km including the Tauern Tunnel. In order to improve the documentation of the tunnel construction, ASFINAG chose to use a state of the art tunnel scanning system to record the various stages of construction: excavation, initial shotcrete lining, smoothing layer and final cast in place concrete lining. The geometric and photogrammetric documentation is provided on a daily basis to all par-ties involved. This innovative concept provides accurate & complete information in real time. The tunnel scanner documentation of the 2nd tube at the 6.4 km long Tauern Tunnel will be presented in this paper as a part of the survey contract.

A mineral survey of the 67, 110-acre Raven?s Eye WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in the north-central Snake River Plain of Idaho was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management. The WSA is in Blaine and Lincoln Counties; the northwest corner is about 1 mile east of Carey, 10. A search of county mining claim records indicated that no claims have been located in the WSA. Basaltic lava is the only rock type exposed within the WSA. A platy variety of lava (slab pahoehoe) occurs that is produced from other lava fields in southern Idaho. The material is marketed as decorative stone, used for wall veneers, and retails for approximately $125/ton. Within the W5A, approximately 18,000 tons of indicated reserves are concentrated in two areas, and a total of 12,000 tons of indicated subeconomic resources were found at six other localities. An additional 10,000 tons of inferred subeconomic resources are unevenly distributed over the remainder of the WSA.

A prototype EM Location System was fabricated and tested at the Geneva Mine near Dragerton, Utah. This system consisted of six manpack transmitters and six manpack receivers covering the frequency band from 900 Hz to 2900 Hz as well as a six channel receiver designed for use, in a helicopter. Tests showed that EM signals from lightweight (3/4 lb) transmitters could be detected both on the surface and from a helicopter through as much as 4450 ft of relatively high conductivity (2 X 10- 2 mhos/m) overburden. Furthermore, the resulting field strength profiles could be used to determine source location to within 150 ft of the actual surveyed location in the mine. Modifications were made to a Monitoring, Locating and Communications System being tested at the Bruceton Mine, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. These modifications have improved the performance and quality of the paging and voice telephony mode of the system. Subsurface receiver modifications have improved reception of voice downlink signals.
