Discussion of the paper of WALTER 0. SNELLING, presented at the San Francisco meeting, September, 1915, and printed in Bulletin No. 100, April, 1915, pp. 695 to 704. A. C. McLAUGHLIN, San Francisco, Cal.-It seems to me that Mr. Snelling's work, if it is what it appears to be, is one of the most important contributions to petroleum technology that has been brought out iii the last 25 years. If his end products are what they seem to be, he has made a discovery, which, in my judgment, will revolutionize the petroleum industry. As to industrially carrying out these processes I do not think there is the slightest difficulty, for I have had some work recently where crude oils were handled successfully at a temperature of 750°F. and pressure of 750 lb. per square inch. WILLIAMS.-Tests were made in Dr. Rittman's experimental plant at Pittsburgh, upon samples of residuum furnished by Mr. Bell, the residuum being the remainder of the crude oil after the lighter fractions had been removed. After the material had been run through Dr. Rittman's plant, yields of from 43 to 58 per cent. of material, boiling under 150°C. were obtained. The distillate had a peculiar odor, due to the presence of benzene, toluene, and other unsaturated hydrocarbons. W. N. BEST, New York, N. Y.-What is the difference between the Rittman and the Snelling process or system? WILLIAM A. WILLIAMs.-The fundamental difference is that reactions take place under relatively higher temperatures and pressures and with none of the oil present in its original or liquid state, while the reactions secured by Mr. Snelling and other investigators have been from the liquids in the presence of some vapors. Under such conditions as Mr. Snelling operates, the temperatures and pressures used are limited and the flexibility in the control of these variables is extremely limited when compared with the Rittman process.

During the tapping of liquid steel from Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), some slag is carried over into the ladle. High levels of FeO and MnO in slag carryover increase the oxygen activity in steel melt leading to oxide inclusion formation during the ladle treatment. The demand on cleaner steels requires minimization of carryover slag. In this work, the effect of EAF slag carryover on ladle slag-steel equilibrium calculations for a hot working tool steel was studied. Steel and slag sampling were done in Uddeholm Tooling AB in Sweden. XRF and OES techniques were used to determine chemical composition of samples. The quantity of slag carryover was calculated based on a mass balance followed by thermodynamic calculations on metal-slag equilibrium using Thermo-Calc software. The agreement between predictions and experimentally determined compositions was good. This leads to the development of a prediction method for optimizing the production of other tool steel grades.

THE published work of Lacombe and Beaujard' has demonstrated the interesting application of etch figures to the determination of crystal orientations in aluminum by a purely micrographic method. The geometry of these figures leaves no ambiguity and the method has the added advantage of being applicable to very small crystal units. These authors applied the technique to the study of high purity aluminum, and it has now been adopted buy Heren-guel and his collaborators to various researches on commercial aluminum, containing up to 1 pct Fe and Si. In recent years bismuth telluride has received considerable attention, primarily due to its value as a thermoelectric material. Since there seems to be little dependence of thermoelectric effect upon crystal orientation1 many of those who have previously worked with this material have been unconcerned with knowing its crystallographic angles to any degree of accuracy. However, when one studies deformation modes, lattice stresses, or the aniso-tropy of mechanical properties of a material, knowledge of the interplanar angles and their relationships as depicted in a stereographic projection becomes essential. Lange2 originally published crystallographic data which described the structure of bismuth telluride as rhombohedral with the space group A more recent work by Francombe3 presented data which corroborated and refined the original findings of Lange. In addition, Francombe established that there is no coexistence of rhombohedral and hexagonal lattices in bismuth telluride as was suggested by Vasenin and Konovalov,4 and that the structure can be treated as a pseu do hexagonal structure with an axial ratio, c/a, of 6.95 for convenience of presentation and study. The interplanar angles and standard projections for several unalloyed hexagonal metals have been previously published,5-9 but the present work appears to be unique in that it presents data for a rhombohedral compound in pseudohexagonal form. As a pseudohexagonal structure, this material has an extremely large axial ratio as compared to the usual range of approximately 1.5 to 1.9 for the hexagonal metals. The effect of mechanical activation on the reduction kinetics of magnetite concentrate by hydrogen was studied. The magnetite concentrate was milled for 8 h using a planetary mill. After the milling process, the average particle size was reduced from 14 to 4.4 m resulting in a lattice microstrain of 0.30. Thermogravimetric experiments were conducted to focus on the chemical reaction as the rate controlling factor by eliminating external mass transfer effects and using a thin layer of particles to remove interstitial diffusion resistance. The onset temperature of reduction was decreased due to the mechanical activation, and the degree of conversion was decreased by sintering of particles which was confirmed by SEM analyses. In view of the results, a reaction rate expression is discussed from which the activation energy is calculated.

Rössing Uranium Limited has operated since 1976 a large open pit uranium mine and extraction plant at a remote site in the Namib desert, South West Africa/Namibia. The geology (Berning, I., et al. Economy Geology) and the technical aspects concerning mining, grade control and metallurgy have previously been described (Rössing Uranium, Mining Magazin and Whyllie, R.J.M. "Rössing Uranium reaches rated production", World Mining). The improvement of leach 'extraction has been reported in 1984 (Kesler, S.B. et. al. "Uranium extraction at Rössing") and the installation of a central process control system has been described (Kesler, S.B. et al. "The introduction of a central process system at Rössing"). At the beginning of 1983 a decision was made to develop a computer system for metallurgical plant optimisation which included mass and volumetric balances, analytical assays for up to 5 chemical elements and the costs for the major consumables. Within 10 months this computer system was developed and implemented. A large number of test runs were made and computer studies were undertaken. The metallurgical division now has a scientific tool for production; planning for actual comparison with plant results and for strategic investigations and decision making.

North of Antwerp central train station, two single-track tunnels for the high-speed train line between Brussels and Amsterdam were constructed. At the same time, the central train station was modified to a through station. Both 1.23 km tunnels are situated in the Antwerp sands and were constructed using a slurry shield machine. Due to the inner city location, the tunnels run over their entire length underneath structures, in some cases with only minimal clearance. The paper deals with these challenging situations. In addition, the tunnel boring machine, the tunnel lining and measures to limit settlements will be introduced.

This second of a series of reports on the characteristics of commercial aviation gasolines presents inspection test data furni8hed on their products by 15 manufacturers of commercial grades of aviation gasoline and special data obtained in Bureau of Mines laboratories on samples of these gasolines. Data on 18 grade-80, 20 grade-91/98, 20 grade-100/130, and 9 grade-115/145 aviation fuels are presented. These gasolines represent July 1947 production.

The Lomas Bayas copper property is located93 km (58 miles) east of Antofagasta, Region II, Chile (Fig. 1). The deposit was discovered in 1880. The deposit produced intermittently until 1992. Production at Lomas Bayas took place in high-grade veins and breccias mined underground. During 1991, Empresa Minera Mantos Blancos SA (EMMB) optioned the property from Compania Doña Ada SA. Doña Ada maintained the right to continue mining the ores by open-pit and block-caving methods and hauling the ore to its plant located60 km (37 miles) to the north. EMMB conducted exploration and column test programs. On May 9, 1994, Compania Minera Gibraltar Ltda.(CMGL) signed a purchase option agreement to acquire the Lomas Bayas property. CMGL conducted 8,612 m(9,490 ft) of reverse-circulation drilling, 2,028 m (6,650ft) of diamond drilling, a series of metallurgical tests and geologic mapping. The company then decided to exercise its purchase option.

More than 30 percent of the global demand for zircon (ZrSi04) is supplied by South Africa. A significant amount of the zircon is exported, and beneficiated products are then imported for industrial applications locally. Beneficiating the zircon locally could have a positive impact on the local market, since zircon is only one of many such cases. Ammonium acid fluoride serves as an alternative anhydrous fluorinating agent for zircon in the synthesis of several metal fluoridesl.2. It provides an effective dry fluorinating method and is easier to handle than hydrogen fluoride or fluorine gas. Zircon exposed to extreme plasma temperatures dissociates and becomes more reactive. The reaction of the plasma-dissociated zircon (Zr02?SiO2) with the ammonium acid fluoride (NH4F?XHF, where x= 1 to 5) forms two main intermediate compounds (NH4)3ZrFr(s) and (NH4) 2SiF6(s), the latter decomposing to form volatile products at relatively low temperatures, providing easy separation of the silicon and zirconium compounds. The ammonium zirconate compound decomposes to form zirconium tetrafluoride (ZrF4), which can be further manufactured into zirconium metal, to name but one product. Data on the kinetics of the reaction of ammonium acid fluoride with zircon and plasma-dissociated zircon, combined with the thermo-dynamic parameters of the reaction, is essential for the development of an industrial process for the production of a precursor for the manufacturing of zirconium metal, namely anhydrous ZrF4. Both the reaction kinetics and reaction parameters will be included in this study, as well as some proof that the reaction proceeds to ZrF4 on a small batch scale. If the exact reaction parameters can be pinned down, a wide spectrum of anhydrous metal fluorides can be synthesized through this fluorination route.

This is the second of two interrelated studies of waterborne transportation. The first study discussed transportation of mineral commodities on the inland waterways of the South-Central States.2 Together, the two surveys describe and analyze the flow of foreign and inland waterborne commerce of the gulf coast. All the principal mineral-industry imports and exports of the gulf coast are mentioned in the report, including metals, nonmetals, and mineral fuel products, The gulf coast foreign trade in mineral industry products was determined to be composed of a small number of commodities.

This report (arid related appendices) provides a description of the functional design specifications, engineering design specifications, and program of instruction for development of a training system for dragline equipment operators. Based upon a task analysis and training system analysis prepared under Phase I, Phase II efforts expanded upon and refined the functional design specifications. The training hardware components have been developed to a point shy of system fabrication. A detailed outline of the porgram of instruction and content sequence has been prepared. The objective of the training system described in this report is to provide new operators of dragline equipment with the requisite skills and knowledge to assure cost-effective development and an adequate supply of our human resources.

The Sullivan Concentrator treats a complex sulphide ore consisting mainly of galena, marmatite and pyrrhotite. The ore carried minor values in silver, antimony, bismuth, indium and tin. The products of the concentrator are lead, zinc, iron and tin concentrates. The minor metal values other than tin are recovered from the concentrates by the refining processes in the smelter at Trail.The concentrator was completed in 1923 and first operated with a capacity of 2,500 tons per day. In the years 1926 to 1929 changes to equipment and buildings brought the operation up to 5,500 tons per day and then, in the years 1935 to 1945, the daily tonnage was raised to 8,500 tons. After 1945, the rising insoluble content of the ore made it necessary to consider the construction of a Sink-Float plant. At this time consideration was also given to the construction of a new crushing plant underground to replace the rolls crushers and cone crushers located at the concentrator. By 1949, construction of the Sink-Float plant was completed along with a new underground crushing plant, and an electric haulage way between the underground crushing chamber and the Sink-Float plant. The ore was hauled in forty 14-ton car trains which discharged into a 3,000 ton receiving bin by means of an air operated five car rotary dumper. With the start up of the,Sink-Float plant, a 1 ½ ft. by 12 ft. Hardinge rod mill was also brought into operation. The Sink-Float plant made it possible to treat 12,000 tons/day of mine run ore with up to 40% of this being rejected as float.

LIX® 34 liquid ion exchange reagent, one of a totally new class of metal extractants, is discussed in terms of its properties. Specifically, these properties include improved selectivity for copper and greater recovery. Some comparisons to the well known General Mills' LIX® 64N have been made. Particular emphasis is given to treating solutions containing very low copper values and high impurity levels.

The diffusivities of oxygen and sulfur in liquid iron have heen determined hy a capillary technique in which the surface concentrations of the solutes were established by means of appropriate H2/H2 and H2S/H, gas mixtures. Total diffusate and concentration profile results are shown to be in good accord, yielding for- 1560 and Supporting results at 1660°C are also presented. The conditions necessary to avoid gas transport control in this type of experiment are discussed. IN spite of their importance in understanding the kinetics and mechanisms of refining reactions, the dif-fusivities of oxygen and sulfur in liquid iron are not well established. Accordingly, as a first step in studies of rates of solute absorption from the gas phase into liquid iron, new measurements of these diffusivities have been made and are presented in this paper. The only published results for the diffusion of sulfur in pure liquid iron are those of Kawai.' He used a diffusion couple technique in which two cylindrical specimens, one containing sulfur and the other with negligible sulfur concentration, were joined together and held in a refractory capillary. After an experiment, the sample was quenched and the concentration distribution of the solute determined. Kawai recognized that significant changes in solute distribution occurred during melting and freezing and he attempted to correct the concentration profiles for these effects to give a sulfur diffusivity of 4.6 x 10-6 sq cm per sec at 1560°C. The method of correction, however, was not rigorous and the uncertainty in this result cannot be easily assessed. Koslov et a1.2 have reported the diffusivity of oxygen in iron as 7.8 x 10"3 sq cm per sec at 1660°C. This value appears to be unreasonably high but, unfortunately, details of their experiments are not available. Shurygin and Kryuk have used the rotating disc method for a study of oxygen diffusion in liquid iron. In their experiments a silica disc was rotated in liquid iron containing oxygen, and the rate of formation of liquid iron silicate was determined by measuring the decrease in weight of the disc. On the assumption that the rate of dissolution was controlled by the diffusion of oxygen in the iron, the diffusion coefficient was computed to be 5.2 x sq cm per sec at 1550°C. However, the Levich equation, which was used to interpret the rate data, was originally de- rived for the case of mass transfer between a solid disc and a single-phase liquid. The hydrodynamic and diffusion boundary layers in the iron stirred by a disc, via coupling of the silicate melt, may be appreciably different from those predicted by Levich's equations. Recently, Novokhatskiy and Ershov, using an identical experimental method to that of Shurygin and Kryuk, obtained a diffusivity for oxygen in liquid iron of 1.22 x 104 sq cm per sec at 1550°C: no reasons were offered for the disagreement. Schwerdtfeger5 has also recently studied the diffusivity of oxygen in liquid iron. He reacted shallow melts of liquid iron, 0.5 to 1.0 cm deep and contained in high-purity alumina crucibles, with appropriate H20-HZ-He mixtures. The total sample was analyzed, without sectioning, to obtain the average concentration of diffusate. A value at 1610°C of D = 12(3) x 10-5 sq cm per sec was obtained from the results of twenty experiments.= Oxygen profile measurements, which were carried out in three additional experiments using long capillaries and the semiinfinite boundary conditions, indicated a diffusivity about half that computed from the shallow bath experiments. Possible sources of error in Schwerdtfeger's study will be discussed later in this paper. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUE The essential arrangement of the diffusion cell is shown in Fig. 1. The liquid iron was contained in an alumina capillary, 3 to 4 mm diam and 3 to 9 cm long, which was supported by a hollow alumina pedestal and this whole assembly was held within a movable alumina reaction tube. Converters have been playing an important role in the extraction and processing of metals ever since the first type of converter was invented about 100 years ago. Historically their operation has been mainly based on the experience of talented operators rather than on strict control and optimization technologies. However, in the new realities of unavoidable necessity to increase productivity and in the conditions of diversification of primary materials from various geographical areas, improving control and optimization techniques have become indispensable. In this paper a review of the authors? previous work in terms of improving control and optimization of converter operational practices related to magnetite content and precipitation, slag and metal blows, problematic and dangerous elements such as As, Sb etc. has been described by highlighting the advantages that the new control and optimization methods and tools bring to everyday converter practices. Several examples are given and future work is underlined

"Efficient utilization of CO2 can help to decrease global warming. Methane reforming using carbon dioxide has been of interest for many years, but recently that interest has experienced a rapid increase for both environmental and commercial reasons. The use of CO2 provides a source of clean oxygen, which eliminates the need for costly oxygen separation plants. The product of dry reforming is useful syn-gas, which can be used to generate electrical power in a SOFC or in the production of synthetic fuels (hydrocarbons and alcohols). Hexaaluminate catalysts prepared at NETL may represent a product that can be utilized for the conversion of CO2 to syn-gas. In this work, transition metals dispersed in barium hexaaluminate have shown to be promising new catalysts for dry methane reforming. In this investigation, a series of BaNixAl12-yO19-d catalysts with varying Ni content were prepared by co-precipitation followed by calcination at 1400°C. CO2 reduction by dry methane reforming was carried out to determine catalyst performance as a function of temperature and carbon formation was also quantified after the reforming tests. Results of catalysts characterization, dispersion and surface area, were correlated to catalytic performance.IntroductionEfficient utilization of CO2 can help to decrease global warming. The dry reforming reaction has been known for a long time. Recent publications have reported studies over several catalysts. For example, the CO2 reforming of CH4 over mesoporous nanocrystalline zirconium powders (ZrO2–3%M2Ox; M: Ce, La and K) at 700ºC have shown methane conversion up to 60% (1). Similarly, the effect of Ni content (1–12 wt%) on the surface and catalytic behavior of bimetallic PtNi catalysts supported on ZSM-5 for reforming of methane with CO2 has been studied and report shows a maximum conversion of 16% and catalyst deactivation was observed during the first hour of time on stream (2). In another report, (3) Ni/a-Al2O3 catalyst was tested for syn-gas generation at 750ºC. The maximum methane conversion was 25%."

The lattice parameters of zirconium and zirconium-oxygen solid solutions (hcp) were determined from measurements of back-reflection X-ray photograms obtained at 29°C using a symmetrical focussing camera. The following linear equations between parameters (c,a) in angstrom units (10-8 cm) and atom ratio (m) of oxygen to zirconium were obtained: c = 5.14764 + 0.2077m a =3.23168 + 0.1099m. The linear equations given are valid over the range 0 to 5 at. Pct 0. The accuracy of individual parameter measurements approaches the limiting accuracy determined by the spectral broadening of the incident characteristic radiation, and exceeds the accuracy of previously reported values. THE present work was undertaken in order to determine the lattice parameters of zirconium-oxygen solid solutions with an accuracy that allows quantitative determination of oxygen in zirconium. The results indicate that this is possible if very careful measurements are made, since the parameter change is only a few hundredths of a percent per at. pct 0.1, 2 In the present investigation the desired accuracy was achieved with large-grained samples using a back-reflection focussing camera and maintaining good temperature control during exposure. In addition a digital computer was used for calculation of the parameters by means of an analytical extrapolation.37 Suitable diffraction photograms were obtained from large-grained samples by using a modification of the technique described by Graf and Monteil.5 This consists of simultaneous rotation and oscillation of the specimen about two mutually perpendicular axes during exposure. Whereas, normally the upper limit of grain size is about 50 µ for useable diffraction photograms, this technique allows extending the upper limit of grain-size to exposure of a single crystal. EXPERIMENTAL Preparation of Alloys for X-ray Diffraction—Zir-conium, designated as hafnium-free, Westinghouse "Grade 1," was swaged from l/2-in.-diam crystal bar to 3/8-in.-diam rods. Substantially all of the hydrogen was removed from the zirconium by annealing at 1200°C in a high dynamic vacuum. The rods were then swaged to 0.2 in. diam without intermediate annealing, and 2 in. lengths were cut for alloying with oxygen. Samples for chemical analysis were taken from portions of the rods between each 2 in. length. Chemical analysis of the dehydroge-nated zirconium is given in Table I. Commercial tank oxygen (99.5 pct 0) was condensed in a liquid nitrogen-cooled trap, and part of the condensate was slowly reevaporated into 5-liter storage flasks. Nitrogen remained as a reactive impurity, and the calculated maximum increase in nitrogen content after a 5 at. pct 0 addition to zirconium was 50 ppm by weight. However, chemical analyses of several of the prepared alloys indicated that the maximum increase in nitrogen content was 10 ppm. The storage flasks, a Sieverts-type gas burette and manometer, and associated traps, pumps, and pressure gauges were connected through a glass high-vacuum manifold to comprise the gas addition system.
