"Consideration of the protoype tuyere geometry for injection of inert gas through the bottom in a basic oxygen steel furnace and a requirement to specify an optimal flow for bottom wear and metal penetration led to experimental investigations[l,2] to apply the results of previous workers to this specific case, Flow velocity profile development within the tuyere was proposed as significant and the experimental scheme was designed to test this. It is proposed that the design criterion for the conditions of optimal flow of the prototype geometry be based on the non-dimensional mass velocity.INTRODUCTIONSharma[3] tested small diameter tuyeres in a laboratory hot model using molten iron to define a flow criterion for prevention of penetration of the bath liquid into the tuyere. Using argon, nitrogen and helium through a range of tuyeres (1 to 3 mm ill ) he proposed the jet Froude number C Fr' ) with the critical value being 2400 - 2500 or higher. Sonic or supersonic velocity was not a sufficient criterion. The tuyere design was a parallel tubular duct of moderate aspect ratio CAR) i.e. the ratio of length to diameter ranging from about 22 to 36 in the experimental furnace.Farmer et al[4] stated their their aim ""to develop a unifying explanation and procedure for the proper design of tuyeres"" but disagreed with Sharma's jet Froude number criterion. Recalculating Sharma's data they proposed instead a fully expanded Mach number of 1.75 with an initial expansion angle of ten degrees as the lower bounds of flow to meet the design requirement. They experimented with tuyeres in a water model using tubular, annular and convergent-divergent nozzles. The aspect ratio of the parallel duct tuyeres was from 533 to 762 using diameters of 1.4, 1.7 and 2.0 mm C the diameters being of tubes to be used full scale). Subsequently these results were applied to a prototype tuyere using a diameter of 1.7 mm with beneficial results in practice. This tuyere had an aspect ratio of 1067."

"Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral with broad applications. These applications take advantage of sepiolite’s high specific surface area and unique nano-sized channel structure. Over the past years, numerous materials and techniques based on the structure and property of sepiolite have been developed. This article reviewed the recent achievements in developments and applications of sepiolite in environmental protection, catalysis area, and nanocomposites. The prospectives of sepiolite applications is also discussed. INTRODUCTION Sepiolite is a magnesium-rich, porous, and fibrous clay mineral. The typical chemical formula of sepiolite is Si12Mg8O30[OH]4[OH2]4·8H2O [1]. Sepiolite has a high specific surface area and nano-sized channels because of its special structure [2]. This unusual crystal structure projected onto the [001] plane is shown in Fig.1 [3]. As it can be seen, silicon and oxygen atoms make up for the tetrahedral structure and magnesium and oxygen atoms form octahedral structure, respectively. Those tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbons expand boundlessly in one direction, leading to the special fibrous structure of the sepiolite. Every tetrahedral-octahedral-tetrahedral ribbon is combined to the next by an inverted Si–O–Si bond, which causes an interlaced layer with a continuous tetrahedral sheet and a discontinuous octahedral sheet. Terminal MgO at the edges of the ribbons is coordinated with two structural water molecules, which can form hydrogen bonds with zeolitic water molecules that are located in the channels running parallel to the fiber axis [3,4]. The Mg2+ ions inside the channels can be exchanged with other cations in solution. Therefore, sepiolite can be used to remove metal cations from aqueous solutions [5,6].It can be seen from Figure. 1 and Table 1 [7], the unique structure endows sepiolite with a substantial surface area and nanoscale channels. Its specific surface area reaches 320 m2/g and channel dimensions up to 3.7×10.6 Å. There are three active adsorption sites on the surface of sepiolite: one is oxygen atoms of the Si-O tetrahedron. The second is the structural water molecules paired with magnesium ions at the edges of the ribbons, which can form hydrogen bond with adsorbent. The last one is the Si-OH groups due to the breaks of the Si-O-Si bonds on the surface of Si-O tetrahedron. Thus, sepiolite has strong adsorption ability which has been widely used in environmental protection. Moreover, sepiolite has many significant features such as good mechanical and thermal stability, rheological property, porous, and easily modification, making it be a hotspot in chemical and biological researches. However, with the development of technology, broader and more advanced applications of sepiolite have been carried out in recent years. In this study, the recent achievement in sepiolite applications is summarized, the further tendency is also discussed."

En cuanto su uso en la minería , solo una séptima parte es industrial o cotidiana, mientras que el resto es guardado en las bóvedas del banco. Finalmente, la producción del oro en el Perú proviene de una cuarta parte de los lavaderos de Madre de Dios y de una quinta parte de la fundición de La Oroya que lo rescata al fundir minerales de muchas minas que tienen el oro como subproducto.

The first operation permitted under Michigan’s Part 632 Non-Ferrous Mineral Mining Law, it opened in 2014 and is expected to produce 163 kt (360 million lbs) of nickel, 134 kt (295 million lbs) of copper and small amounts of other metals over its estimated nine-year lifespan.The company extracts approximately 2 kt/d (2,200 stpd) from the underground nickelcopper mine using a bench-and-fill stoping process. Accessed from the surface by specialized underground trucks, the vehicles carry about 45,400-kg (100,000-lb) loads through a 1.6-km (1- mile) long and 5.4-m (18-ft) diameter ramp shaft descending into the earth at a 13 percent grade. Stoping is a bottom-up method that involves systematically blasting columns of loosened ore that is then mucked by front loaders into trucks and backfilled using cemented and uncemented rockfill."

"Despite the pre-eminence of the Jwaneng Diamond Mine as the world’s richest diamond mine, the discovery story has long been clouded in mystery. This is the 45-year old untold story of the Jwaneng discovery and contemporaneous Bechuanaland/Botswana political and socioeconomic history. Diamond exploration by De Beers in Bechuanaland began in 1955, with the first true kimberlite discovery near Letlhakane in 1967, before Clifford’s Rule was applied and before the use of indicator mineral chemistry. Surface deflation soil sampling and bioturbation by termites was the foundation for exploration into the Kalahari. The 1962 reconnaissance programme south of Jwaneng had failed to make any discoveries. Improved sampling methods were applied to the Kalaharicovered areas in 1969 and positive results were received by year-end. The Whateley’s Wish percussion drill-hole in December 1972 was confirmed as Jwaneng 2424D/K2 with drill core in early 1973. Jumper drills were required to penetrate the Kalahari sand cover. Diamond resources were demonstrated despite multiple technical problems. IntroductionThe Jwaneng Diamond Mine is, by value, the world’s richest diamond mine. Harry Oppenheimer is quoted as saying that Jwaneng is ‘the most important primary deposit found anywhere in the world since the discovery at Kimberley more than a century ago.’ (Taylor III, 1982) The mine opened in 1982 after some nine years of evaluation and construction since discovery in February 1973. Debswana (2017) states that 2015 production was 7.87 Mt of ore from which 10.408 million carats were recovered at a grade of 132 carats per 100 t (cpht). Although the value is not reported, it was noted that Jwaneng contributes 60–70% of Debswana’s total revenue from all mines, including Orapa, Damtshaa, and Letlhakane (Debswana, 2017)."

THE Aldrich Mining Co. holds under lease from the Illinois Central R. R. Co. about 14,000 acres, in the East half of Township 12, Range 12 `V., in Marion county, Alabama, and owns other lands, of which about 1,000 acres adjoin this leased tract, making a total area of about 15,000 acres, all of which is underlain by the coal-seam upon which the company is operating. This seam is nearly horizontal ; and a ravine, diagonally crossing the tract, exposes the outcrop on either side for about 2 miles. The territory has been so divided that nearly the whole of it can be worked out by two collieries. The mines at Brilliant were opened in the Fall of 1898, and shipments began in the following spring. The original plan was to furnish steam-coal for locomotives to the Illinois Central R. R. Co.; and upon this expectation the investment of capital was made. The field was entirely new; and the softness of the coal at the outcrop induced the belief that it could be very cheaply mined. A contract for the delivery of a large quantity of coal to the railroad was accordingly executed. But with the advance of the entries to increasing distances from the outcrop, the coal proved so hard that it could no longer be drilled with a breast-auger; and the expense of mining became so great that the contract for cheap steam-coal had to be cancelled. It became evident that the work must be done with machinery and explosives, if it could be profitably done at all. On the other hand, the excellent quality of this coal opened, at the same time, a possible market not specially contemplated at the outset-namely, that of a first-rate coal for domestic and general uses. Blast vibration analysis under relatively near-field conditions has been carried out in a narrow-vein underground operation. The objective was to characterize the vibration signal (particle acceleration and velocity) from carefully controlled stope blasts. The limitations of such analysis in deriving design guidelines for reducing dilution has been elucidated. It has been shown that identification of each individual hole with specific explosive types can yield explosive-specific predictive equations for particle velocity. This has been coupled with measurement of actual overbreak to arrive at a limiting vibration level to generate a realistic design tool for controlling dilution in narrow-vein mines.

A 4.8 m (16 ft) diameter hard rock tunnel was driven through granite bedrock to create the 1.7 kilometer (1.1 mile) long Hampton McCloy Retention Tunnel for the city of Richmond, Virginia. During the work the tunnel encountered narrow seams of partially decomposed granite that were not self supporting and could be dealt with using ribs and lagging. However, as the tunnel approached the receiving shaft, it encountered a large seam of highly decomposed rock, alluvial deposits and running sand which resulted in soil loss into the machine. As a result of this condition, a jet grouting program was quickly developed to allow the tunneling to continue. This paper will describe the manner in which jet grouting was used to solidify and stabilize the decomposed bedrock, alluvial soils, and running sand to allow the TBM to continue tunneling.

The Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) held its fifth annual conference in Montreal, Quebec, Canada earlier this year. “The Minerals Industry: Responding to the Global Challenge” was the first MEMS conference to be held outside of the United States. About 125 mining- and minerals-related professionals attended. The MEMS program included six sessions and three distinguished speaker addresses. The session topics included: “Minerals in the Macro economy: Development in Demand,” “Trends in Global Metals Supply: The Producers’ Challenge,” “Global Environmental Issues: Policy Perspectives,” “Global Environmental Issues: Quantitative Analysis” and “Minerals in the CIS: Phoenix or Albatross?” A student session was also offered. It provided a competition for monetary awards for outstanding papers.

PRODUCERS of both bituminous and anthracite coal have for many years been worrying about the gradually decreasing consumption of their product in the United States. Twenty years ago production had climbed to a peak of 569,000,000 tons of bituminous and around 90,000,000 tons of anthracite. In 1939 it was about 393,000,000 tons of bituminous and 51,000,000 tons of anthracite. This does not mean that the country is using less polver than it did twenty years ago, or that we are living in colder buildings. As a matter of fact, about three times as much electric power is now being consumed as in 1920. In general two factors are responsible for the drop in coal consumption: (1) greater efficiency in the use of coal, and (2) increased competition from hydro power, internal-combustion engines, and substitution of oil and gas for coal in conventional furnaces. As to the first factor, it took 3 Ib. of coal to generate a kilowatt-hour of electricity in central stations in 1920 and it takes 1.4 Ib. now; it took about 175 Ib. of coal in railroad locomotives to haul 1000 long tons a mile in 1920 where it talces about 120 lb. now: and marked economies have also been made in the use of coal in steel plants: in by-product coke ovens, and in other large uses. As to the second factor, three times as much electricity is produced from water power now as was produced in 1920; three times as much oil is being consumed in various ways; and likewise, the consumption of natural gas has tripled- whereas coal consumption in the same period has dropped by 40 per cent

"Lately, the development work in closed circuit grinding has mainly been focused on mills and on different types of instrumentation, mathematical models and automation in spite of the fact that the poor efficiency of the classifier is well known. It has also been proven by several investigations that by improving the sharpness of classifier separation, remarkable technical and economical advantages can be achieved. Some attempts to improve the performance of the most common classifier, hydrocyclone, have been made, among them injection of wash water above the spigot cyclone and retreatment of either or both of the products of the primary classifier. No method has been successful enough to achieve general adoption in the industry. The purpose of this paper is to introduce some industrial results achieved by two-stage classification where the coarse product of the turbulent-flow classifier, hydrocyclone, is cleaned in a laminar-flow cone classifier.The main target of the adoption of the two-stage classification circuit it naturally to improve the sharpness of size separation. This again leads to the following advantages in the grinding process:- lower circulating load and increased capacity- lower energy consumptionnarrower size distribution in the fine product- less overgrinding and less slimes- reduced specific surface areaThese improvements, no doubt, reflect on the subsequent concentrating process in the following aspects:the rate of flotation is improved, less reagents and energy is neededthe recovery and grade of valuable minerals in concentrates is improved- savings in dewatering can be expected- less fines in tailings improve the conditions for water recirculation."

The Niblack polymetallic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits are located on Prince of Wales Island in southeast Alaska, approximately 50 km southwest of Ketchikan. The property hosts a number of polymetallic volcanogenic sulfide occurrences within the folded Lookout rhyolite volcanic succession. The Lookout deposit is the primary focus of current resource delineation and contains an indicated resource of 4,136,000 tonnes at 1.13% Cu, 2.32 g/t Au, 2.27% Zn, 38.70 g/t Ag and an inferred resource of 1,736,000 tonnes at 1.09% Cu, 1.77 g/t Au, 2.02% Zn, and 25.52 g/t Ag as of March 2011. Sulfide mineralization is interpreted to have formed sub-seafloor, within permeable felsic fragmental volcanic rocks. Sulfide minerals of economic interest include chalcopyrite and Fe-poor, Zn-rich sphalerite. Of considerable importance, the Lookout deposit contains elevated gold that occurs as inclusions within the base metal sulfides.

It has been shown for the first time that Poisson?s ratio decreases with increase in elastic moduli, E & G and ultrasonic velocities. This new correlation between two independent elastic constants may lead to the reduction in independent elastic constants for isotropic solid materials from two to one, at least for a given alloy system with different microstructural conditions.

To better understand the load shedding and the stress transfer on coal pillars due to room-and- pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a monitoring field study. Two sites, at overburden depths of 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m), were selected in a room-and-pillar mine operating in Southern West Virginia. The deformation and stress changes in the roof and two adjacent pillars at each site were monitored during the retreat mining process. The monitoring results and field observations were used to calibrate large-scale FLAC3D models for each site. The calibrated models were used to assess different sizes of roof bolts installed in deep cover areas. INTRODUCTION Deep cover room-and-pillar retreat mining is an important emerging issue that will intensify in the future as shallower reserves are depleted (Mark, 2009; Chase et al., 2002). During pillar retreat mining, the likelihood of local and/or global instabilities increases due to elevated stress levels near the pillar line because of the abutment loading. In the last decade, approximately 31% of the room-and-pillar mining groundfall fatalities in the United States occurred during pillar retreat mining. Between 2013 and 2017, this proportion increased to 55%, of which 50% of these fatalities were due to falls of roof and rib that occurred during pillar recovery (MSHA, 2018). One interesting piece of information about pillar recovery fatalities was that the victim was nearly always under bolted roof. Sheared and broken #5 (5/8-in), fully grouted rebar bolt failure contributed to three of four fatal roof fall incidents that have occurred in deep cover retreat mines (NIOSH, 2010). This claim raised the following question at the study mine: Is it safe to use a 4-ft long #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt grade 60 at a depth of cover more than 1,000 ft (304.8 m)? There was some concern about shear failure of the #5 (5/8-in) rebar bolt at a depth of cover over 1,000 ft (304.8 m). To answer the question and to reduce accidents and fatalities caused by ground falls due to room-and-pillar retreat mining in deep cover panels, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) monitored the roof and rib deformation and the change in vertical pressure within two adjacent pillars during pillar recovery. The study was conducted at two deep cover sites in a room-and-pillar mine located in Southern West Virginia that operates in the Lower War Eagle (LWE) seam. The monitored sites were selected at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) and 1,500 ft (457.3 m) depths of cover. In this paper, site-1 represents the monitored site at 1,000 ft (304.8 m) of cover, while site-2 represents the monitored site at 1,500 ft (457.3 m) of cover. For this study, large-scale FLAC3D numerical models were calibrated based on both field observations and instrumentation results. The calibrated models were then used to compare the ground response and the induced stresses of two pillars at instrumented sites 1 and 2. The maximum lateral displacement (roof shift) obtained from the calibrated large-scale FLAC3D models was applied to a small-scale FLAC3D bolted models, the safety factor for axial stresses of the simulated roof bolts was calculated at the deep cover sites.

"Mining companies are under constant pressure to reduce their cost structures to sustain profitability. In mines using an open stoping mining method, dilution often has a significant effect on profitability. At Target mine in South Africa, dilution in some open stopes was found to exceed 10%, falls of ground being a major contributor to the problem. This dilution can reduce the recovered grade from 5.5 to 4.5 g/t, resulting in a potential loss of about R21 million per month based on a gold price of R240 000 per kilogram. In addition to the cost of dilution, the cost of damage to, or loss of, trackless equipment as a direct result of falls of ground in open stopes is significant. Other associated costs include transport, hoisting, secondary blasting, milling, and plant treatment of waste material. Stable open stopes are essential in order to reduce falls of ground. Back-analyses of stope instability at Target mine have indicated that conventional rock mass failure criteria are unsuitable for stope design. An alternative strain-based criterion has been developed, and has proved to be very successful, allowing the stability of open stopes to be calculated reliably. Since its implementation in 2010, dilution and equipment damage have decreased markedly, creating value for the mine. IntroductionMines that make use of an open stoping mining method aim to extract only the ore, leaving the waste behind. Many orebodies have well-defined boundaries between the ore and the waste rock. In such orebodies, the introduction of waste into the ore due to overbreak dilutes the grade. In massive disseminated orebodies, dilution is less problematic. Overblasting, falls of ground, or other causes may result in dilution. A study undertaken in Canada (Pakalnis et al., 1995) found that approximately 51% of all underground metal mines utilized open stoping mining methods and, from surveys conducted at these mines, open stoping operations experienced dilutions of up to 20%, and occasionally more. Dilution of this magnitude has a significant economic impact on any mining venture. Research carried out in Australia by Capes (2009) came to the same conclusion."

Large heap leach operations around the world contain significant under-leached metal values that present recovery challenges to operators. The first challenge is to find the location of the highest inventory. High resolution resistivity ? has proven sensitive enough to detect such zones in the interior of heap leach pads to target treatment or re-leaching. Newmont Mining Corp. has adapted the high pressure fracturing technology, used in oil wells to stimulate select zones in heap leach pads to add reagents in 3-D for re-leaching, changing zonal chemistry for improved recovery and heap closure. High Resolution Resistivity ? is able to subsequently monitor injected solution flow and determine directional permeability during Hydro-Jex stimulation. The combination of these technologies has shown strong economic success, for selecting targets in the heaps and monitoring solution application. These technologies are now available to the mining industry for adoption.

DURING the winter of 1946 to 1947 potash operations in Germany, France and Spain were visited by the author. The U. S. Department of Commerce, through its Field Intelligence Agency Technical, sponsored the inspection of German properties by representatives of the American Potash Industry. Vast deposits of potash salts occur in the above-mentioned countries, and the production and marketing of these salts are important in their respective economies. Germany An area of some ten thousand square miles of north central Germany is underlain by lenses of potash salts interbedded with greater thicknesses of sodium chloride or common salt. These salt measures are relict deposits from the evaporation of an arm of the Zechstein (Permian) Sea which formerly covered northern Europe. During the peak year of 1940, Germany produced salts containing 1,860,000 tons of K,O and, next to coal, potash is its most important mineral raw material. The German deposits are found in the synclinal areas flanking the Flechtingen, Hartz Mountain and Thuringian uplifts, and, to the north they lie beneath the plains of Hannover. The regional dip of the salt measures is to the north, hence, lenses of potash found at depths of 500 to 1000 m* in the Two general depositional provinces of potash concentrations are recognized: (1) the main basin, and (2) the subsidiary basin. Salt Stratigraphy: Five commercial potash zones or beds are recognized. The three beds present in the main basin are: The Stassfurt bed that occurs near the top of the older salt, and the Ronnenberg and Riedel beds in the younger salt occurring 200 to 300 m, respectively, above the Stassfurt bed. DURING the winter of 1946 to 1947 potash operations in Germany, France and Spain were visited by the author. The U. S. Department of Commerce, through its Field Intelligence Agency Technical, sponsored the inspection of German properties by representatives of the American Potash Industry. Vast deposits of potash salts occur in the above-mentioned countries, and the production and marketing of these salts are important in their respective economies. Germany An area of some ten thousand square miles of north central Germany is underlain by lenses of potash salts interbedded with greater thicknesses of sodium chloride or common salt. These salt measures are relict deposits from the evaporation of an arm of the Zechstein (Permian) Sea which formerly covered northern Europe. During the peak year of 1940, Germany produced salts containing 1,860,000 tons of K,O and, next to coal, potash is its most important mineral raw material. The German deposits are found in the synclinal areas flanking the Flechtingen, Hartz Mountain and Thuringian uplifts, and, to the north they lie beneath the plains of Hannover. The regional dip of the salt measures is to the north, hence, lenses of potash found at depths of 500 to 1000 m* in the Two general depositional provinces of potash concentrations are recognized: (1) the main basin, and (2) the subsidiary basin.
