This report records a chapter in the history of the development of an electrolytic manganese industry in the United States. Nearly all the manganese requirements of the United States have been imported. Although there are large quantities of manganese ore in the United States, most of it is low-grade and cannot be used for the production of ferromanganese. Since the electrolytic production of manganese carried out by a process developed in the laboratories of the Bureau of Mines offers a method whereby the extensive low-grade deposits may be utilized and since commercial development had proceeded slowly, the Bureau constructed a new and larger pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev., where abundant electric power was available. An authorization in November 1940 covered a plant of only several hundred pounds daily capacity. Additions to some sections author¬ized by subsequent appropriations have enabled the plant to produce over 2,000 pounds a day for extended periods.

The Mina Santa Rosa mine in Panama was the victim of a mine closure 24 years ago that left the community in dire straits. The mine showed the potential resources of greater than 1M ounces of gold and 4.5M ounces of silver. Veragold Mining Company decided to reopen the mine and address all the issues that were involved in the startup of an historic mine. This paper provides methods to restore the community trust, provide a transparent process, and develop an environmentally sound flowsheet. Immense scrutiny surrounded the Tailings Storage Facility, and the company developed a plan focused on paste thickening and surface stacking to eliminate the need for a conventional tailings’ facility. Paste thickener principles and benefits are also provided.

Unlike the first predicted deep-sea mining (DSM) boom 35 years, the public response to the re-emergent possibility of DSM is this time round is not entirely optimistic, with serious economic, social, and environmental concerns being voiced. In the intervening years, the troubling notion of the ‘resource curse’ has been popularized, whereby the economies of developing nations rich in natural resources (agriculture, minerals, and fuels), paradoxically appear to fare more poorly than their brethren who have fewer such resources. There have been a variety of explanations and counter-arguments regarding why the resource curse occurs, including how it can be ‘escaped’, and even some disagreement on whether it in fact does occur. Nevertheless, many commentators appear to agree that that the quality of governance is strongly implicated in the socioeconomic success, or failure, of these resource-dependent nations, and could indeed be the deciding factor. Unlike nations with diversified economies, the majority of the income from natural resource economies, in the form of royalties and rents, flows through national government; hence, good governance and fiscal management is of particular concern.

ROCK wool, one of the most recent additions to the list of Canadian-made, insulating materials, is a soft, light, fibrous material consisting of interlaced, flexible, glassy fibres so exceedingly fine that, individually, they are almost invisible to the naked eye and will float in air. In the process of manufacture, a suitable rock, generally a self-fluxing argillaceous dolomite consisting of nearly equal proportions of acidic and basic constituents, is melted to a completely fluid state and then converted into fibres either by a blast of steam or air, or by a mechanical device. The increase within the past five years in the number of plants in the United States making rock wool and slag wool has been remarkable, especially in view of the depressed conditions prevailing 'with most industries during this period. In 1930, there were only 8 plants reporting production of .these materials, whereas at the present time there are 44 plants in the United States listed as making these products, and there are 3 plants in Canada. In 1929, the total sales of rock-wool products in the United States amounted to-$2,377,324. In 1934, according to the National Rock and Slag Wool Association, 26 member companies reported sales of $3,695,405, and in 1935 the sale's of 30 member companies had a value of $5,571,469. The establishment of the rock-wool industry in Canada followed the publication in 1931 of a report (1) by the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, Ottawa, in which was set forth the results of field work and laboratory studies which indicated that large deposits of rock in the Niagara peninsula, hitherto regarded as valueless, were suitable for the making of rock wool. This report was supplemented in 1934 by another report (2), giving the results of further laboratory and commercial-scale tests on the rock from these particular deposits, which proved conclusively that rock wool of good quality could be made from the rock in question.

This chapter examines three minor influences on flash smelting's industrial oxygen and oil requirements, i.e.: (a) recycle of molten converter slag to the flash furnace (b) gangue oxides and carbonates (e,g, Ah03, CaC03) in the flash furnace feed (c) minor sulfides (e.g. NiS} in the flash furnace feed. It then examines the. sensitivity of our flash furnace calculations to previously ignored aspects of smelting chemistry -Cu, S and Fe304 in slag and 0 in matte.

This report, describing the mining method of the Dresser Trap Rock Co., Dresser, Wis., is one of a series published by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods, performance, and costs at mining operations throughout the United States. SUMMARY Dresser, in Polk County, is 3 miles south of St. Croix Falls, Wis. Company operations are about 1 mile north of the townsite. The mine has been in [peration] since 1914 and under the present ownership since 1949.

Dowding, Reynard and Associates Mineral Projects (DRAMP) was approached by the ARM/Lion Ore JV during July 2006 to conduct a feasibility study and control budget estimate for a new greenfield project for their NKOMATI Nickel mine 45 km east of Machadadorp. The scope included the evaluation and review of previous studies as well as a techno-economic trade-off on four possible comminution circuits ranging from conventional crushing and ball milling to fully autogenous milling. The following document encapsulates the thought process, decisions and the references used in selecting the final comminution route for the new 375 ktpm MMZ concentrator. Apart from the pilot test work performed, design simulations from a number of sources, performance results from a recently commissioned 100 ktpm MMZ concentrator, together with an understanding of the geology and mineralogy of the orebody and possible variations in the characteristics of the orebody over the life of mine were assessed. The results from all the above-mentioned work indicated that it would be possible to treat the MMZ ore at the desired throughputs to the desired grind sizes in a fully autogenous grinding (ABC-type) circuit. Autogenous milling is generally considered to be one of the higher risk milling circuits. This is mainly due to the fact that the ore, which is utilized as the grinding media, could be variable in terms of hardness and mineralogy/geology. Nevertheless, it is a very popular route as the cost benefits, more specifically the operating cost, are normally very attractive. This is especially the case when large low grade orebodies are evaluated. In North/South America, autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits have been successfully employed during the past 20 years on large scale low grade operations. Taking all the above factors into account, the DRA/Nkomati project team recommended an autogenous circuit with the option to add steel to both the primary and secondary mills (if required) for the new operation in order to create the opportunity for significant operating cost savings. One has to bear in mind that all the new design simulations and decisions are based on previous work and potential unknown variations within the orebody will never be fully understood until the pit is operational for some time.

Thermodynamic calculations based on the free energy minimization method were performed for the system Ti-Fe-Mn-0-C1-C in order to evaluate the chemistry associated with the chlorination of an ilmenitic concentrate using CCl4. In the calculations various weight ratios of FeTi03/ CC14, a , were considered, which varied between 0.32 to 0.98 at temperatures ranging from 673 K to 1273 K , at atmospheric pressure. The results obtained indicated that the operating conditions for a process in a packed bed reactor, which implies the chlorination of both Fe and Ti, are 0.39 < a < .49 at T 1173 K.

Efficient transportation is necessary to complement modern mechanized mining methods. The increasing trend toward high-capacity face loading equipment has demanded equally efficient haulage methods; this has been met by increasing mine-car sizes, using larger locomotives, and increasing haulage speeds, all requiring properly installed and maintained haulage roads specifically designed for this type of traffic. The recommendations and specifications included in this circular were made to point out salient factors important to the proper construction and maintenance of track haulage roads and to serve as recommended standards for track installation and maintenance. "This paper supplements the information provided annually at the Canadian Mineral Processors Operators Conference regarding the education of Mineral Processors in Canada. The purpose of the paper is to provide information regarding the engineering accreditation process in the United States and the universities that offer programs in Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy in the U.S.There is a critical shortage of trained Mineral Processors and Mining Engineers world wide. The Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) formed a task force to evaluate the national needs for trained engineers and to track the number of engineers who graduate from U.S. universities each year. The statistical information for Mining Engineers is well-developed. The current effort is to assemble similar information regarding students who graduate with expertise in Extractive Metallurgy and Mineral Processing as well as to explore the limitations of the accreditation system in the United States and its impact on the education of Mineral Processors. The long-term objective is to develop a data base regarding Mineral Processing programs and Mineral Processing graduates that is as complete as the one that has been maintained by the Canadian Mineral Processors.INTRODUCTIONIn the United States engineering curricula are accredited by ABET, which was formerly known as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The objective of ABET accreditation is to ensure that educational programs in applied science, computing, engineering and technology meet quality standards set in conjunction with the professional organizations that represent professionals in the industries which hire students graduating from those educational programs. For example, the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) is the lead society for accrediting Mining Engineering programs in the U.S. For Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering programs, the lead society is The Mineral, Metals and Materials Society (TMS). SME is a cooperating society for accrediting Metallurgical Engineering programs. Cooperating societies for the accreditation of Materials Engineering include the National Institute of Ceramic Engineers (NICE), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)."

"Westmin Resources Ltd. operates the 3300 TPD H-W underground copper/zinc mine on Vancouver Island. Ore storage underground is handled in a 6000 tonne coarse ore bin and a 3000 tonne fine ore bin. Both of these bins have experienced significant wear since excavation and construction in 1985. Wear problems have included both deteriorating rock walls as well as worn out steel liners and concrete at the discharge points from the bins. Extensive rehabilitation work was completed in 1993.The basis o/this paper is the rehabilitation work done on the coarse ore bin. The design and installation of ground control measures are discussed. The bin access methods used to allow the work to proceed quickly and safely are also presented. This involved the use of a Tekfoam safety bulkhead to protect workers.IntroductionMine DescriptionThe H-W mine was commissioned in 1985. Mine access is by vertical shaft with most production areas at a depth of about 500 m. Host rocks are composed of andesite and rhyolite. Mine capacity of 3300 tonnes per day is achieved mainly by longhole open stoping methods, complemented by room and pillar mining. Metals recovered from the massive sulphide ore are copper, zinc, gold, and silver. Mineable reserves at January I, 1994 were 9.7 million tonnes."

Your assessment of the minerals business. I would first like to express our profound sadness and sincere condolences to the families of the miners who lost their lives in recent mine mishaps particularly in West Virginia, and other locations. Any loss is unacceptable. It is time to review and, if required, re-establish a rigorous health and safety agenda in the mines. It must involve a review of health and safety regulations. And innovative training methods for sensing, awareness and mitigation of health and safety hazards must be developed. As far as the minerals business is concerned, I am excited about the outlook for mining. Over the last 20 years, global demand for minerals has closely mirrored the growth of the gross domestic product. Minerals re-main a major part of the world’s economic foundation. And that will continue to be the case. It is no surprise that the fortunes of the mining industry rise and fall with general economic trends. Globally, mining has been strong — thanks to the explosive economic growth in Asia. The U.S. mining industry has performed reasonably well, with notable strength in the metals, coal and construction and aggregate areas and with some softness in the industrial minerals sector.

Perlite is a glassy volcanic rock which will, upon rapid controlled heating, expand or "pop" into a frothy material of low bulk density, valued as a lightweight aggregate. The term perlite also is applied to the expanded product. The chemical composition of perlite ranges from that of rhyolite to that of andesite; the water content ranges from 2 to 5%. Most perlite is pale gray, but some is black, brown, or even green. Inclusions in perlite are common and include phenocrysts of quartz, feldspar, biotite, and hornblende, and miscellaneous rock fragments. Occurrences of perlite are restricted to areas of Tertiary and Quaternary volcanic rocks. Perlite occurs as flows associated with thick accumulations of pyroclastic debris and other flow rocks, as dikes, sills, domes, and as selvages of intrusive bodies of volcanic rock. Individual flows of perlite range in thickness from a few feet to as much as 100 ft and commonly cover several square miles. Dikes and sills of perlite generally are small, but domes generally are substantial in size and may be as much as several miles in diameter. Most perlite deposits are large enough and topographically situated so as to lend themselves to low-cost open pit mining methods. Conventional equipment is employed in the mining of perlite. Although milling procedures may appear to be simple, care is exercised in order to produce a carefully sized product and to minimize the production of excessive quantities of fine materials, which have limited use and are considered as waste. Perlite is processed, or "popped," in one of two basic types of furnaces: horizontal rotary or vertical stationary. Both types of furnaces include product collection and dust control systems. Many commercial deposits of perlite are known to occur throughout the world, and although no exact estimate of reserves is available, there appears to be an adequate supply to meet current and future worldwide requirements. End Uses The uses of expanded perlite are many and varied and are based primarily upon its physical and chemical properties. Because of its (1) low bulk density, which generally ranges between 2 and 20 lb per cu ft; (2) low thermal conductivity "K" factor (Btu per hr per sq ft per OF per in, of thickness), which ranges between 0.267 for loosely packed perlite (bulk density of 4.48 lb per cu ft) to 1.25 for perlite gypsum plaster; (3) high resistance to fire; and (4) low sound transmission, expanded perlite is used to a great advantage as aggregate and insulating material in the construction industry. Early uses of perlite were related exclusively to the construction industry, which now consumes about 60% of the domestic production. The primary use of perlite now is as aggregate in insulation boards. Other uses of perlite in 1971 were as aggregate for plaster, horticultural aggregate, low-temperature insulation (cryogenics), and concrete. Because of its low thermal conductivity ("K" factor), high adsorption of sound, low bulk density, and fire resistance, perlite aggregate plasters hold many advantages over conventional plaster. Perlite aggregate plaster lends itself to machine applications, dries quickly, and has relatively high elasticity which reduces cracking after drying. These same features make perlite useful as aggregate in portland cement concrete and asphalt concrete for construction wherever weight reduction, insulation, and acoustics are of prime importance. The practice of manganese ferroalloy smelting has traditionally been based on utilising oxide ores which typically contain a high level of manganese. This preference for oxides has even been extended to the modification of natural carbonates into nodulized oxides. However smelting practices developed over the past 30 years have created a market for natural manganese carbonate ores, driven in part by the unique properties that this type of ore can offer. An understanding of the mineralogy of carbonate ore and its thermal properties has provided important information which enables furnace operators to take full advantage of the chemical differences. However changes to traditional operating practices have been necessary. Once furnace operations using natural and unmodified carbonate ore have been mastered, the unique chemical features of manganese carbonate ore are able to contribute, not only to new product development, but also to cost savings. The use of natural manganese carbonate ore is now a well-established aspect of the industry. The sustained increase in demand for carbonate ore worldwide over the past several years confirms acceptance of its quality. There are effectively few limits to its successful use.

493 The most common method for minimizing the copper content of residual slag in the process of autogenous smelting of sulfide raw materials is treatment of molten slag in an electric furnace, with optional addition of solid reducing agents, such as coke, and/or sulfiding agents such as pyrite. A drawback of this technique is the fact that the final slag produced still contains 0.5% or more Cu. We have tested a method for treating molten slag obtained as a result of autogenous smelting by a gaseous mixture of sulfur dioxide and methane at a ratio of. SC:SO2 = 0.75 :1.0 in the presence of oxygen. Interaction reaction within the SO2-O2-CRi system proceeded at a high rate at 1373 to 1573 K to form reducing and sulfiding agents: H2S, S, COS, CO, CO2, H2, H2O. The gas mixture requirement was about 100 to 150 Nm3 per 1 tonne of slag. A decrease in the ferric iron concentration (Fe3+) from 10-15% down to 2-3% resulted in lower solubility of copper in slag, and agitation of the melt with gas stream accelerated. the separation of the sulfide phase and slag. Removal of copper from slag was performed in a pilot unit within the second V anyukov furnace zone where slag arrived with a copper content of 0.8-1.3%. The temperature of molten slag was maintained within 1523 to 1573 K. The copper content of the final slag was at a level of0.12 to 0.14%. The matte sent to converting was a mixture of bottom matte from the smelting zone and the slag treatment zone. It had a copper content of about 50 to 55%. Process gases from both furnace zones were combined and sent to the acid plant for sulfur recovery. This process was offered for commercial use at two copper smelters in Russia and CIS.

ALLUVIAL gold was first discovered in Guiana in 1852, in the sands of the Arataye river; by Paulino, a Brazilian convict. During the following years, gold was found also in the rivers Orapu, Cirubé, etc. In 1873 the famous placers of the Sinnamary system were opened: Saint-Elie, Dieu-Merci, Adieu-Tat, and Couriége. This group of mines has produced nearly $10,000,000, according to official records, not including the gold that escaped the taxes. The discoverer was a mulatto named Vitalo. Except in a few rich spots, the gold was rather evenly distributed along the creeks. In one instance, gold was found in the red dirt from the slope of a hill, which, after transport to the creek, gave an amount of 150 kilograms. The placers of the Mana system, Enfin, Elysée, Pas-Trop-Tot, date from 1878, and their production has been about $5,000,000. In 1888, the Awa placers, along the boundary between the French and Dutch Guianas, on the Maroni and its tributaries, were discovered. They have yielded $12,000,000. The only industrial company,, the Dutch Guiana French Mining Co., produced in 15 years about 2,500 kg. of gold, worth $1,500,000. From 1893 dates the famous Carsewene discovery, in territory then in dispute between France and Brazil. A settlement was made recently in favor of Brazil, by arbitration of the Switzerland State Council. Carsewene is said to have pro-duced about $18,000,000 in six years (1894-1900), but not even one-fourth of the production went through French Guiana and

The U.S. economy showed further strength during the third quarter of 1983, continuing the upward trend discussed in the last two issues of Minerals and Materials. The National Association of Purchasing Management composite index increased to a 10-year high of 67. 1 in July. (A value of 50 or greater indicates expanding industrial activity.) The index, a weighted composite of new orders, production, employment, vendor performance, and inventories, is derived from a survey of purchasing agents for about 250 industrial firms. Investment and Other National Economic Indicators The strong consumer surge of second quarter 1983 was reinforced during the third quarter by the performance of private investment. Because of this, many analysts became more optimistic about the strength of the recovery and its potential for being sustained. Capital investment growth, negative since 1980, was positive for every investment component in the third quarter of 1983. Preliminary estimates indicate a real increase of $1.4 billion (at an annual rate) in private investment expenditures on nonresidential structures, an increase of $4.3 billion (at an annual rate) for producers&apos; durable equipment, and an increase of $4.8 billion (at an annual rate) in real inventory levels. The second quarter 1983 increase in expenditures on producers&apos; durable equipment was the first indicator that investment recovery would occur during the rest of the year (table 1). Corporate profits in total manufacturing increased $6.5 billion from first quarter to second quarter 1983 (table 2).

The generation of mining waste has been the subject of environmental, economic and social concern. Alternative and sustainable methods of recycling metals technologies are desired. The present work focuses on the application of the ion exchange technique for the extraction of metals contained in a lateritic nickel mining effluent. The Purolite S950 chelating resin was used in the present work because it has the ability to adsorb transition metals present in an acidic solution. The experiments were carried out in a batch varying the pH in the range of 0.5–2.0. 1 g of resin was placed in contact with 50 mL of solution and stirred for 120 min at a speed of 200 rpm and temperature at 25 °C. The results demonstrated that the affinity of the resin varied with pH. The adsorbed metals were only copper, manganese, magnesium and zinc. The most extracted metal was copper, corresponding to 37%, when the solution was conditioned at pH 2.0.

Calculation of consistent steady-state mass balances in operating metallurgical plants and pilot plants is of interest for many reasons. In general, enough data can - and should - be collected to overdefine the system, i.e., permit calculation of nonmeasured quantities via more than one path. In such cases, resulting steady-state metallurgical mass balances rarely close due to sampling, analysis and/ or instrument error. Indeed, determination of a valid calculational sequence for complicated process flowsheets with multiple recycle streams can prove quite difficult. Here we present and discuss a method that has proven useful in analysis of numerous grinding circuit flowsheets of varying-degrees of complexity our technique requires only a consistent process flowsheet with appropriate associated data and arbitrary numbering of streams and equipments. Process topology and user data are decoded to yield a set of "search" or base variables and a set of "calculated" variables in solids, water, particle size and splitter parameter space. This procedure greatly speeds subsequent actual mass balance adjustment calculations since perturing certain variables (e.g., a solids value) does not require recalculation of other variables (e.g., the water balance). Finally, internal search and calculated variables are back converted to User units and used in a Sum-of-Squares criterion. Global minimization of this performance functional then yields a consistent mass balance in a least, squares sense. Weighting factors of choice can be used. Examples illustrate application of these methods.
