We are no longer short of viable Rare Earth deposits. As little as 2 years ago China mined and produced 97% ofthe world?s rare earths. Only a few deposits were in an advanced stage of exploration and development. Now Technical Metals Research (TMR) Gareth Hatch *5 reports that 347 deposits are being developed by 265 companies down from 440 on July 6th. Their Index of Advanced projects lists 45 projects in 14 countries. They will sustain the world for centuries to come and many good deposits are yet to be found. The problem is mining 14 elements in balance. Each of the deposits listing production in the chart has a unique set of minerals which they think will give them a cost advantage. Which of these will make it to production is a question. Most of the Advanced won?t be mined soon, but which ones? China is still in the driver?s seat in Light Rare Earth production (LREO) with one deposit with 35 million ton Baiyunebo deposit in Inner Mongolia which is part of a working iron ore deposit. The number of HREE deposits have been reduced and they attempting to eliminate unpermitted mines. This report will tell you what a Rare Earth is, how rare they are, why they are important, and where they are being developed which includes Australia, the United States, Africa, Greenland, Brazil and Canada.

"In order to investigate the fractal feature of coalmine deep rock fragments under impact loads, variable cross-section split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus, 50 mm in diameter, was adopted to conduct impact compressive test for rock specimens from -962m deep coalmine. Various impact pressures, such as 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 and 1.2MPa, were selected to implement different loading rates. Sieving statistical analyses were conducted for rock fragments after being impacted, and the particle size distribution of broken rock in various loading rates were calculated with the fractal method and then the corresponding fractal dimension was obtained. Test results shows that there is a good self-similarity and fractal feature in fragments distribution of deep coalmine sandstone under impact loads. The fractal dimension of fragments is between 1.9 and 2.7. The research also indicates that there is an approximate power relationship between dynamic compressive strength and fractal dimension, and a strength power relationship between fractal dimension and average strain rate. Moreover, there is a linear relationship between fractal dimension and specimen absorbed energy. The rock fractured process can be quantitatively described through fractal dimension, which can reflect the deep rock broken degree and is an ideal index to evaluate the distribution of rock fragments.INTRODUCTIONBroken rock is one of the most basic processes in mining operations, rock fragmentation has always been an important index to evaluate rock breaking effect (Xu & Yu, 1984). Macroscopic fragmentation of rock material is the final results of continuous development, expansion, gathering and cutthrough of internal micro-cracks. This process, developing from microscopic damage to macroscopic fragmentation, is an energy dissipation process and shows fractal characteristics (Xie, 1993). Turcotte (1986) has conducted statistical analyses of fragmentation for different kinds of geological materials under various broken conditions, and arrived at the conclusion that fragmentation distribution is a fractal."

All of the coal resource in North Dakota is lignite. The lignite fields of North Dakota cover approximately 40 percent of the total area of the state, with reserves estimated to be 9.8 billion tons, two percent of the U.S. base. The first commercial coal mine in North Dakota opened in Morton County in 1873. As the railroads crossed the plains, the demand for coal increased. Coal for fuel was supplied by the state's underground mines. By 1884, North Dakota's lignite production had reached 35,000 tons. North Dakota was among the fist states to shift from underground to large-scale commercial surface coal mining. By 1927,40 percent of the total production was by surface mining, compared to 2 percent for the nation as a whole. By 1959,86 percent of the total production was by surface mining, while the national average was 22 percent. Since 1966, surface mining has been the exclusive coal production method in North Dakota. North Dakota's regulatory program received conditional approval December 15, 1980. Following approval of amendments to the program, it received full approval February 18, 1986. The Abandoned Mine Lands Program was approved December 23,1981.

Intevdiffusion and intrinsic diffusiorz coefficients were determined in the uranium-niobium system from diffusion couples analyzed with an electron microbeam probe. A Previously unveported intermediate phase, designated in this report as the delta phase, was found to exist along the mobium-rich side of the miscibility gap. Its composition width was determined from the concentration gradients in the diffusion couples. The presence of this phase was also confirmed by microhardness analysis and metallographic observations. THE excellent corrosion resistant properties, high-temperature strength and reasonable nuclear properties of niobium have prompted its use as an alloying element with uranium and as a possible cladding material for reactor fuel elements. Hence the formation and growth of intermetallic phases as well as diffusion data for the uranium-niobium system are of considerable practical importance to metallurgists and nuclear engineers. Diffusion zones may exhibit varying degrees of complexity dependi.ng upon the mutual solubility of the metals involved, and the intermediate phases which may form. In the simplest case where the metals exhibit a calmplete range of solid solubility, a single phase region is produced. Generally, however, the metals may react to produce a multiphase diffusion zone containing several layers of intermetallic phases. A number of investigatorsl-6 have analyzed the concentration gradients present in diffusion couples in order to investigate phase equilibria and solu- bility limits. If diffusion is the rate-controlling process in establishing a concentration gradient, the compositions at the interfaces of the intermediate phases will represent the equilibrium values expected from the phase diagram at the temperature at which diffusion has taken place. No published information is available at this time on diffusion in the uranium-niobium system. A number of investigators7-" have contributed information to the construction of the uranium-niobium phase diagram from other than diffusion techniques. There is good agreement on the high uranium side of the phase diagram, but the high niobium side of the miscibility gap still remains somewhat in doubt. The phase diagram as determined by B. A. Rogers, et al.7 is shown in Fig. 1. The present work was aimed at obtaining fundamental information about the solubility limits of the miscibility gap and diffusion in the uranium-niobium system. A Kirkendall effect, which might be expected on the basis of the rather large difference in melting points between uranium (1132°C) and niobium (2415" C), was also investigated. The concentration gradients were measured by an electron microbeam probe technique, similar to that used by Castaing,l2 Adda and philibert,13, l4 and Macres.4

Kittusamy (Kittusamy & Buchholz, 2004) state that there have been few studies conducted to assess exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) in the construction industry. They suggest that there is very little reliable data from the construction industry that characterizes exposure levels to various hazards including WBV or the health outcomes from such exposure and that there is a need for more exposure data. In a recent exploratory study of heavy construction equipment Cann (Cann, Salmoni, Vi, & Eger, 2003) looked at vibration levels for 14 different types of construction equipment. Eight of the 14 pieces of equipment tested exposed operators to levels of WBV that exceeded the recommended limits for an 8-hour period when comparing the measured VDV to the ISO 2631-1 standards. The purpose of the present research was not only to test a larger number of scrapers but also to investigate scraper operator exposure to whole body vibration (WBV) separately for each task. Methods 33 scrapers were evaluated for WBV in a variety of residential and road construction projects. Testing equipment consisted of triaxial accelerometers that allowed vibration data collection in all three orthogonal axes, with the x-axis positioned to measure vibration in the anterior-posterior direction, the y-axis in the medial-lateral direction, and the z-axis in the vertical direction. Root mean square accelerations (aRMS), vibration dose value (VDV), crest factor, and maximum transient vibration values (MTVV) were derived from this software and exported to an Excel™ spreadsheet for later data analysis. Test sessions for each piece of equipment lasted for approximately 20 minutes until at least three work cycles had been completed. Tasks included: idling while waiting for a bulldozer to push the scraper through the scraping phase, scraping, traveling loaded with dirt, dumping and traveling empty. Results Task breakdown by time reveals 25% of the work cycle was spent traveling fully loaded with dirt, 19% dumping, 21% traveling unloaded, 17% idling and 18% scraping. Calculation of aRMS vector sums gave values of 2.55 m/s2 during loaded transport, 2.46 m/s2 during dumping, 2.31 m/s2 during unloaded travel, 0.55 m/s2 during idling and 1.46 m/s2 during scraping (see Table 1). The highest acceleration values recorded were found in the z-axis during fully loaded transport reaching an average aRMS over three work cycles of 2.55 m/s2.

Zirconium and hafnium are two important elements in nuclear industries. Zirconium is used in fuel rod for its low neutron absorption. Hafnium should be separated from zirconium, because it has higher neutron absorption cross section. In this research, separation process of the mentioned elements from (Zr+Hf)Cl4 mixture produced in the Zirconium production plant (ZPP) of Iran (Esfahan) was studied employing solvent extraction method in the nitric acid medium by using tributylphosphate (TBP) as solvent, and kerosene as diluent. The effects of nitric acid, sodium nitrate and amount of extractant, zirconium concentration in aqueous phase, phase ratio, agitation time, and mixer agitation rate were investigated on the separation process. The process was optimized at 5 M nitric acid, 1 M sodium nitrate, 60% (v/v) TBP. The optimum values for phase ratio, agitation time and agitation rate were 1.5 min and 500 rpm respectively. In this condition, the zirconium extraction efficiency, and separation factor were 65.1% and 205.59, respectively. Finally, we accessed to nuclear grade in this research.

It's my pleasure to welcome the Rocky Mountain Coal Institute to Montana. Now that you've ended a 74 year history of meeting outside our borders, I hope you'll be back more often. Even if I can't convince you to come back before 2060, when another 74 years will be up, I'm confident the Kalispell and Flathead Lake area will do the persuading for me. In recent weeks, I've made a number of speeches around the state pointing out just how wrong the revenue projections in Montana's state government made in April of '85 were when we came to April of '86. Since the middle of this month, Montana's legislators have been in Helena struggling to balance a state budget that, by the end of fiscal year '87, threatened to be some $88 million in the red. Other western states reliant on natural resource and agricultural economies have found themselves caught in the same deflationary spiral. The "window of opportunity" I proposed and the 1985 Montana Legislature passed, couldn't have been opened at a more difficult time. What was envisioned as an incentive to expand Montana's coal production, and our tax base, ran aground on low oil prices and excess hydroelectric power. De- spite the one-third severance tax rebate offered on new coal production, year-to-date figures published in the June 2nd Coal Week show that production in Montana is down almost 10 per- cent from last year. Again, we're not alone. Production in Wyoming is down 8 percent and in North Dakota, it has dropped 13 percent. An over- all 3 percent production decline in western states looks even worse when contrasted against a 12 percent increase for your eastern competitors. Montana's "window of opportunity" had the potential to be a significant signal to your industry. That potential was quickly tempered by the inability of Arab nations to stabilize world energy prices. If any of us had forgotten, the last twelve months have reminded western states that the well-being of our natural resource economies has a tremendous impact on the ability of all levels of government to provide services. The past year has also driven home that in the world of business and in the business of the world, risk-taking is still the name of the game. The Western Governors recognize the problems facing this industry - and our states - and we're prepared to fight for the future of western coal. In the past two decades, legitimate environmental concerns have created a vast body of new legislation affecting coal producers. The industry has been required to meet new reclamation standards - tough regulations relating to ground water, air quality and wildlife habitat. To the industry's credit, coal companies have hired professionals with the technical know-how to do it right. Rather than considering reclamation laws to be an unreasonable burden, today's coal company is more likely to view its reclamation efforts as a source of corporate pride. In a sense, the industry and the agencies which regulate it have matured together . . . although at times OSM is reluctant to admit that either of us capable of or willing to play by the rules. Certainly some abuses exist and OSM's oversight has been helpful in ensuring parity between those states willing to comply and those that would rather defy federal law. Nonetheless, penalizing the more modem and responsible western coal industry for abuses that occur elsewhere is both unfair and counterproductive. Federal penalties range from "cruel and unusual" reporting requirements to the proposed electricity tax that would effectively force utilities and ratepayers who have already met the sulphur emission standards to subsidize those who have dodged their cleanup responsibilities. The research and characterisation for compositional, physicochemical, structural, electrical and flotation properties of various pyrite samples for a copper-zinc sulfide ore was carried out. Various methods were used during the research, such as optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, electron probe micro-analysis (EPMA), phase emission analysis, routine chemical analysis, auger electron spectroscopy (AES), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), back-scattered electron images (BSE), potentiometry, and instrumental neutron-activation analysis, flotation. Analysis of obtained results established the interrelation between impurity structures and concentration of electric charge carriers in minerals, Butyl xanthate sorption and flotation yield of pyrite. The research concluded that pyrite samples differ by morphology, micro defects of structure, concentration of donor and acceptor impurities (Co, As, Sb, etc.) and conductivity parameters (thermo-electrical force, specific resistance and concentration of charge carriers The peculiarity of pentagon-dodecahedral pyrite is the high concentration of electric charge carriers (electrons) and the more negative surface potential (by 25–75 mV) in comparison to cubic pyrite. The surface of cubic varieties is more active, therefore it is oxidized in alkaline lime medium much faster, than the surface of pentagon-dodecahedral varieties. This phenomenon is caused by high reaction ability, irregular jointing and defects of cubic pyrite. This promotes the increase of calcium ion sorption on its surface and the decrease of Butyl xanthate sorption. According to this, an increase in alkalinity (lime medium) from a pH of 10.0–11.5 leads to an increase of gold content reporting to the tail of bulk flotation. Gold content is increased from 0.58 g/t (?? 9.5) to 1.9 g/t (?? 11.6), which represents an increase in gold recovery of 24.68 to 79%, respectively.

DEFORMATION bands of surprising regularity are found in large-grained polycrystalline copper after cold-rolling (Fig. I). Individual bands frequently are large enough to permit a determination of their orientation by means of etch pits and an optical goniometer. Measurements have been made on 21 areas in seven different grains, and these, combined with X-ray studies of nine single crystals that had been cold-rolled after mounting in a polycrystal-line block, have contributed to a better understanding of the preferred orientations in rolled copper just as similar studies have for rolled iron' and brass.2.3 Particular attention was given to determining orientations that are stable during rolling and to the manner of fragmentation and rotation of unstable grains. The possible role of twinning was also carefully investigated. The texture of polycrystalline copper after cold-rolling is well established by the pole figures that have been plotted by Schmid and Staffelbach,4 Iweronowa and Schdanow,5 and Brick and Williamson,3 all of which are in substantial agreement. There has been some divergence in the list of individual "ideal" orientations that have been used to describe the texture by these observers and others,6 although the orientation (110) [112]-that is, (110) parallel to the rolling plane and [112] parallel to the rolling direction-is generally recognized as the most prominent orientation and (I12) [111] one of the lesser orientations. Other orientations have been given by some observers as (236) [533], (100) [001], and (I 10) [001]. The texture of copper has also been described as (135) [533].6.1 The sum of these orientations provides a reasonable approximation to the complete pole figure, but it does not follow that these specific orientations are necessarily of fundamental significance, for the choice of indices is arbitrary, within limits. Furthermore, a detailed investigation of the ideal orientations in cold-rolled iron discloses continuous ranges of equally favored positions rather than definite positions of high stability,1 and similarly Brick's observations in a single crystal of a brass2 suggest that all orientations in the range between (110) [113] and (110) [117] are about equally stable. MATERIALS AND METHODS The material used was vacuum-cast electrolytic copper kindly supplied by L. L. Wyman, of the General Electric Co.* Slices 1/2 in. thick and 2 1/2 in. square, cut from the ingot, were rolled with 50 per cent reduction per pass to final thicknesses between 0.02 and 0.04 in., and etched to develop cube-face etch pits suitable for goniometric work.8 The etch was light on some strips and deep in others.

"This work encompasses co-extrusion of alloy Al4.5Mg at the core and rapidly solidified Al4.5Mg1Ag forming the surface layer. The goal is to produce a multi-material by co-extrusion having a relatively hard surface as compared to a softer core. At the same time, work hardening in both alloys is expected to be significant due to Mg in solid solution. Precipitation hardening at 160°C is studied by applying solution heat treatments at 560°C. The hardness increased from 80 to 130 VH in the surface material after 236 h. Surprisingly, the Al4.5Mg alloy also shows pronounced aging at this temperature, i.e. from 70 to 90 VH. The relatively high solution heat treatment temperature introduces grain growth in the core, but this is insignificant for the RS surface alloy. Blisters forms at the surface and cracks follows large portions of the interface. However, the tensile ductility is significant in all conditions due to very pronounced work hardening, i.e. for the as co-extruded, T6, under- and over-aged. The elongation at fracture ranges between 40–45% and the tensile strengths 240–275 MPa. The tensile properties increase linearly with the thickness of the RS alloy, i.e. following the rule of mixtures.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg alloys in 5xxx-series are classified as non-heat treatable wrought alloys (Polmear, StJohn, Nie, & Ma, 2017). The formation of the binary ß-Al8Mg5 does not give a substantial increase in the strength of the alloys (Mondolfo, 1976). When a third element like Ag, Cu or Zn are added, G.P.?zones are formed at low temperatures and intermediate, partial coherent phases are nucleated somewhat higher temperatures and finally a ternary, equilibrium phase is formed (Auld, 1968; Cousland & Tate, 1986; Mondolfo, 1976). Both the formation of G.P.?zones and intermediate phases increase the hardness and strength of the materials. An intermediate, hexagonal T´?phase is formed in Al-5 wt%Mg-1wt%Ag, and finally the equilibrium, cubic phase (Al,Ag)9Mg5 is nucleated (Cousland & Tate, 1986; Mondolfo, 1976)."

A current study of the growth kinetics of k (hcp) plates in a Cu-Si (fcc)' has generated a requirement for data 02 the chemical interdiffusion coefficient in a (termed D,) as a function of temperature at the composition of the a/a + k pJase boundary. Rhines and Mehl 2 have determined D, as a function of composition at lower silicon contents by making Matano analyses of concentration-penetration curves. However, the accelerating increase in B, which they demonstrated as the phase boundary composition is approached at constant temperature and the rapidly diminishing accuracy of this analysis as the limiting compositions of a diffusion couple are approached (the silicon-rich component of their couples contained appreciably less silicon than is permitted by the solubility limit) indicate that the required information cannot be safely obtained by extrapolation of their data. Although the quite different method employed in this study is not exact, it will be shown that the approximations made are not serious ones, particularly from the viewpoint of the prgcipal application anticipated for these data. D, was determined from the migration kinetics of the a :k boundaries formed in sandwich-type diffusion couples produced by welding a block of high-purity copper to opposite sides of a cube (* in. on edge) of homogenized high-purity Cu-5.82 wt pct Si alloy. The alloy is pure k in the temperature range employed. The surfaces of the couple components which were normal to the diffusion direction were machined accurately flat and parallel, lightly polished, and carefully cleaned. Welding was then accomplished by means of the vacuum-encapsulated pressure jig technique previously employed.3 Welding was always conducted at the intended diffusion temperature; thus the welding anneal also served as the first diffusion anneal. Subsequent diffusion anneals were performed in evacuated Vycor capsules. Following the welding anneal, one of the surfaces parallel to the diffusion direction was machined, ground, and polished flat; additional material was removed from this surface after each diffusion anneal in order to avoid any effects of composition changes. After etching,4 the average distance between a : k boundaries was measured by means of a traveling microscope with an accuracy (per measurement) of better than 1 p. Satisfactory results were obtained at four temperatures in the range 775° to 655°C; attempts to obtain data at two lower temperatures were unsuccessful, evidently as the result of the interference of surface contamination during the welding process.

The production of bituminous coal by stripping methods has become an important factor in some areas, especially in the Central and South Central States. In the latter, production at strip mines exceeds that at deep mines. The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of the land in south-central Alaska for exploration and mineral development of locatable minerals under State or Federal laws. The land ownership for an area of nearly 72.5 million acres in south-central Alaska was divided into 3 availability categories and 15 subcategories. In July 1985, 31.0 million acres of the study area were available for mineral exploration and development, 6.2 million acres were available with restrictions, and 35.3 million acres were unavailable. About 23.6 million acres in the study area are underlain by mineral terranes. About 9.9 million of the 23.6 million acres are available for mineral entry, 2.4 million acres are available with restrictions, and 11.3 million acres are unavailable. While much of the land currently classified as unavailable will be reclassified once it is conveyed to the State or to Native corporations, about 22% of the unavailable lands underlain by mineral terranes are now Federal parks, preserves, wildlife refuges, wild and scenic rivers, and military lands, all of which are considered permanently unavailable for mineral exploration and development.

To study mass transport in systems simulating oil recovery processes, different porous media were saturated with a mobile (carrier phase) and a stationary phase. Slugs of carrier phase containing a small amount of solute were displaced with pure carrier phase. By analogy to the chromato-graphic processes, the velocity of the solute can be predicted from a knowledge of the partition coefficient and the saturation provided that equilibrium between the two phases exists. Equilibrium was found to exist for different porous media, solutes and rates. The conditions were varied over the range normally encountered in the laboratory and in the field. The longitudinal dispersion of a solute undergoing interphase mass transfer was also investigated. INTRODUCTION The production of hydrocarbons by gas cycling, enriched gas drive and C02 or alcohol displacement involves, among other factors, relative motion between two phases and compounds, hereafter called solute, which are soluble in both phases. The solute is carried forward by the faster flowing phase at a lower velocity than the average velocity of that phase. Retardation of the solute is caused by chromatographic absorption and desorption in the slower flowing phase and by the degree of departure from equilibrium. At equilibrium the concentration of solute in the two phases can be related by the equation* CSw = K Cso ,............(1) where C, and C are the concentration of solute in the aqueous and oleic phases respectively and K is the equilibrium ratio, or partition coefficient. Displacement theories must contain an explicit assumption with regard to equilibrium, i.e., whether the compositions can be related by Eq. 1. The existance of equilibrium depends, in general, on the relative velocity between the phases. Unfortunately, other factors such as gravity segregation and viscous fingering, also depend on velocity. For this reason, whenever effects of rate on displacement were observed,2-4 it was practically impossible to discern what caused them — lack of equilibrium or the factors mentioned above. Equilibrium between phases has been the subject of extensive studies in fields such as extraction or chroma to graphy. It has received only small attention in flow through the type of porous media encountered in oil production.5 For this reason a method was developed which makes it possible to study the movement of a solute as it is affected by rate, type of porous media, partition coefficient and carrier phase, but in the absence of segregation or fingering. The information obtained enables one to determine when the assumption of equilibrium can be made. Briefly, the method consists of (1) saturating the core with a mobile and an immobile phase, (2) injecting a slug made up of the same fluid as the mobile phase and a small concentration of mutually soluble solute, (3) measuring the lag and the peak height of the slug at arrival and (4) correlating these variables with fluid properties such as partition coefficient and mixing constants of the medium. PROPOSED MECHANISM The principles of chromatography are combined with the equation of longitudinal mixing to predict the velocity of a solute slug compared to the bulk velocity and the peak height of a slug.6-9 The equation so obtained is valid under equilibrium conditions only. Therefore, a comparison between experimental and predicted results will give a measure of departure from equilibrium. This work was done with either the oleic or the aqueous phase being immobile. For simplicity, the following development is based on the case where the oleic phase is immobile. However, the treatment is the same in either case.

"The LaRonde mill was commissioned in 1988 and began treating ore from the Penna shaft in 2000. The mill has been expanded to accommodate 7,500 t/day, but ramped down to 6,000 t/day since the deep extension began. The process recovers gold, silver, and base metals. In 2008, the Goldex plant began trucking gold-pyrite concentrate to a treatment plant feeding pulp to the LaRonde mill, increasing gold output by 40,000 oz. In 2009, the high-grade Lapa ore processing facilities were annexed to the LaRonde plant, increasing gold output by 120,000 oz. This paper outlines the metallurgical considerations related to the treatment of different ore types.RÉSUMÉ Le concentrateur de la mine LaRonde a été mis en service en 1988 et a commencé à traiter le minerai du puits Penna en 2000. "Several plant studies have been conducted at the Zinifex Century Mine over the past 5 years. For each of the plant studies, surveys of the zinc primary circuit were conducted, characterisation measurements for each operating cell taken, and the floatability components of the ore mapped to develop a model of the circuit. The floatability components and machine parameters were then used to simulate changes in circuit configuration and operating conditions, enabling further potential improvements in circuit performance to be identified.This paper reviews the current flotation practice at the mine, as well as various circuit changes and developments implemented by site. The application of the methodology and the evolution of the standard procedure are also discussed.INTRODUCTIONBase metals were first discovered in the Lawn Hill region of Queensland’s North West in 1869 and the first mining lease in this area was pegged in 1887 over what is now known as the Silver King vein deposit. The area encompassing these veins, which includes the Century deposit, was proclaimed the Burketown Mining Field in 1899. Exploration titles were granted to CRA in 1987, precisely 100 years after the initial discovery at Silver King, hence the name ‘Century’.Century was commissioned by Pasminco in late 1999, with the mine becoming fully operational on 1 March 2000 and the official opening taking place in April. Pasminco had bought the Century and Dugald River deposits from CRA in 1997 for A$345 million, and invested some A$710 million in bringing Century into production. Today, Century is the world’s second-largest zinc mine in terms of its output, having reached full capacity in 2003.The Zinifex Century Limited (“ZCL”) lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 250 kms north-north west of Mt Isa in north-western Queensland. The deposit is a large flat-lying ore body covering an area of some 1.2 by 1.4 km, the 45 m-thick stratabound sulphide orebody is hosted within an 850 m-thick sequence of Proterozoic siltstone, shales and sandstone, amenable to open-cut mining methods. The mine has ramped up to full production delivering five and a half million tonnes of ore per annum, yielding approximately 900,000 tonnes of zinc concentrate and 90,000 tonnes of lead concentrate. Mine life is expected to be about 8 years"

There has been a veritable increase in the adoption of electronic detonators in the last few years. Electronic detonators offer several distinctive features over electric and non-el (shock tube) detonators including better timing accuracy resulting in excellent fragmentation and vibration control, certainly key mining parameters. The field programmability also helps in reducing the on-site magazine storage of detonators with diverse fixed delays. A typical electronic detonator may consist of a logic core, a communication interface, storage capacitor(s) and the ignition element. Being electronic components, the electronic detonators may be susceptible to RF or electromagnetic interference (EMI). RF sources are virtually everywhere: cellular phones/towers, radio transmission, microwaves, walkie-talkies, high voltage (HV) transmission cables and wireless networks with their characteristic frequency emissions. Safety issues prevail; e.g., whether the RF interference can cause premature or inadvertent firing whether directly or indirectly. From a reliability perspective, the RF interference may also impact on bus communications, e.g., during the logging, verifying, charging and firing phases. The deleterious communications disturbance may result in a misfire (non-firing of one or more of the detonators) which is terribly inconvenient for the mine operators and even pose a safety hazard.

The paper presents a brief history of endeavours to start a mining education programme which began in the days when Papua New Guinea's first large mine, at Panguna (Bougainville), was coming into production. The status of the Public Investment Programme in Mining Engineering and the facilities being created for the education and training of Papua New Guinean citizens in mining and mineral processing are also described. Future expansion plans are also detailed including those for the commencement of petroleum engineering and geological engineering which would include courses in mining geology, exploration geology, engineering geology and petroleum geology. The paper also looks at the manpower training requirements in the lower levels of mining industry such as pit foreman, blasting foreman and other similar positions. It stresses the need to start mining technical training programs at pre- employment level and at certificate level in a technical college, possibly Lae Technical Colleqe.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 29,000-acre Dixie Summit area near Elk City, Idaho, during the summer of 1989. At the Petsite mine a marginally economic, identified resource of 4.9 million tons with an average grade of 0.023 ounces gold per ton was delineated. Possible resources of gold, along with silver, copper, lead, and zinc, occur in at least eight other lode deposits. Placer gold may be recoverable by recreational-sized suction dredges in some stream drainages, Five lode mines in the study area have produced over 5,516 ounces of gold (placer gold production was not recorded), 4,757 troy ounces of sliver, 36,746 pounds of lead, and 3,800 pounds of copper. Current mining claims in or adjacent to the study area total 460 lode and 70 placer claims. There are two patented lode claims within the Dixie Summit study area.
