"Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a valid environmental evaluation method and enterprise environmental management tool used in industrial ecology areas. In this paper LCA was newly used to evaluate the environmental impact of manufacturing of alumina by Bayer process in china from two aspects of logistics and energy flow, GaBi software acted as analysis tools with evaluation model established, and several environmental impact assessment criteria were selected based on the actually typical date of Bayer alumina producing process. Evaluation results show that alumina manufacturing by the Bayer process has a great impact on the global warming and human health of respiration, even roasting process gives rise to the greatest impact of winter fog index. Scenario analysis proposed ways of reducing environmental load caused by Bayer process including: (1) the economic and efficient use of mineral processing technology; (2) optimization of energy use, saving power consumption or the use of new more economical source of energy; (3) actively promote the use of innovated technology and equipment in alumina manufacturing and waste such as red mud utilization process.1 IntroductionSince 2002, China is already the world's biggest producer of aluminium, in 2007, China aluminum production has accounted for above 1/3 all over the world, 2009 for 13 million tons and to the end of 2010, China aluminum production is expected increased to be over 15 million ton [1,2,3]. While as the raw material for producing aluminum the alumina production in china has up to 19.46 million tons of the world's total quarter in 2007, by the end of 2009 China alumina production has achieve to 23.78 million tons [4,5]. China has rich bauxite resources with proven reserves about 23 million tons, but the great majority of china bauxite is hard monohydrate diaspore type with low ratio of aluminium silicon, high impurity content and poor aluminum dissolution performance, that cause high energy consumption, long and complex process, high production costs and heavy environment load[6,7]. Before most used alumina production was sintering process rather than Bayer method in china, over the past decade Bayer method has been widely applied instead of sintering process or combination both forming joint process, premise is improving bauxite quality by mineral processing or adding imported rich bauxite mineral[6,8]. In general each ton production of alumina needs bauxite 1.6~2.20t, limestone 0.7~1.7t, soda 0.250kg, fresh water 12.30 cubic meters, in addition to consume large amounts of energy, and emission waste water over 8.0 cubic meters, dust 2.3~5.7 kg, red mud 0.8-1.5 tons. In china Red mud yield nearly 30.0 million tons every year, accumulated stock is approximately 0.2 billion tons, by 2015 accumulative total red mud is expected to reach 0.35 billion tons [9-13].We know aluminium industry and alumina production have produced large waste, make large energy consumption and its environmental impact could not be ignored. Expecting to optimize production processes and achieve resource recycling for this industrial process the proper environmental assessment is very necessary. Currently Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is generally recognized as the approved tool to achieve the purpose. The essence of LCA tool is to examine, identify and evaluate a kind of materials, product, process, or a system of environmental impact in their whole life cycle. The life cycle of materials or products includes whole process from raw materials obtained to the final disposal, or more ideal with original or other forms of the whole process of recycling [14-17]."

Investigation of gas explosions usually reveals that the combustible gases have come from transmission and storage facilities or from natural gas or oil wells. However, combustible gases such as methane and hydrogen can derive from biological processes. Hazardous situations have been created in the past by the use of abandoned mines for the disposal of sewage and rainwater, by the interconnection of storm and sanitary sewers, by sealing the openings in manhole covers when repaving the roadway over a sanitary sewer, and by the construction of buildings over or near garbage fill areas without adequately providing for the release of combustible gases.

It is powered by a 20-hp Wisconsin air-cooled gasoline engine, through a single reduction gear and flexible coupling. "This paper concentrates on the four recent plant trials/ applications of froth washing. Results showed that improved metallurgical performance can be achieved with wash water. Increased froth cleaning yielded better upgrading, and some cases slightly improved recovery. Froth sampling and salt tracer tests supported the findings of froth washing tests.At Falconbridge, Ni grade increased from l.47% to 2.15% and recovery from 85% to 87%. At Eastmaque, final Au grade increased from 2.3 to 2.7 oz/st at a slightly higher recovery. At Les Mines Selbaie, Cu grade increased from 24.5% to 25.S% and Zn grade from 54.5% to 56.l%. At Zinc Corp. of America, average Zn grade increased from 55% to 56. 8% at the same recovery for a 45-day period. A number of plants in Canada and the United States have evaluated and/or now practicing froth washing. Wash water has now proved itself in some plants over several months of operation.INTRODUCTIONFroth washing in mechanical flotation cells offers a number of metallurgical (i. e. increased grades and/or recoveries) and economical (i.e. decreased transportation and smelting & refining costs) benefits. Fundamental development work in laboratory and pilot scales performed at McGill yielded encouraging results. (Kaya and Laplante, 1988a and 1989a). Since laboratory and pilot flotation performance can differ from full-scale due to differences in hydrodynamics, kinetics, and froth characteristics (e.g. stability, loading etc.), plant trials were essential to prove the viability of this technology."

INTRODUCTION Companies in the mining industry are subjected at times to currency exchange rate risks and interest rate risks. The former occurs any time a firm deals in more than one currency. The latter occurs anytime a firm is financing itself with borrowings that have a floating interest rate (although a fixed rate can be a problem at times). FOREIGN EXCHANGE RISKS There are two general reasons why exchange rate risks (FX risk) can occur: First, a firm may be building a mine or plant in another country where financing for the plan is denominated in funds other than the country hosting the plant. For example, if a Canadian firm is building a smelter in another country which is being financed with Canadian dollars, the C$100 million for labor, which must be paid in the local currency, has subjected the firm to a C$100 million FX exposure risk. If after the cost estimates were made the local currency appreciates 30% against the Canadian dollar, the cost of labor has increased to C$130 million. (Of course, the local currency could also devalue during this period making the labor cost component less than estimated.) The other reason exchange rate risk arises is due to the fact that the costs of production in one country producing minerals may be incurred in one currency while the production is sold in another currency, such as coal being exported from Canada to Japan under contracts denominated in Yen. In this example, the Canadian firm is exporting coal to Japan and being paid in yen in 30 days at a contract price of 100 Y per ton. Furthermore, assume that the mining firm anticipates a depreciation of the yen against the Canadian dollar of 5% in the next 30 days. Therefore, the mining firm stands to lose 5% of the value of its shipment in a month's time not including carrying costs. In both cases, the mining company risks an adverse change in the exchange rate, that is, the currency the company holds may decrease in value relative to the other currency. There are a number of ways to mitigate the exposure to foreign exchange which can be utilized by the mining company. Optimally, a company should try to match all their inflows and all their outflows in the same currency. For example, if a Canadian firm has mining costs and debt service costs both denominated in Canadian dollars then 100% of their receipts would need to be in Canadian dollars. If a Canadian firm has 70% of its cash outflows in Canadian dollars and 30% of its cash outflow in American dollars in the form of a loan amortization then their receipts would need to be 70% in Canadian dollars and 30% in U.S. dollars. This general principle of matching cash receipts and cash costs in the same currency works fine in a perfect world but what of the real world when these cannot be matched? In actual practice, however, the financial markets have developed a number of ways in which foreign exchange risks can he managed or reduced. FORWARD MARKETS One method is to use the forward markets which are made on a world-wide basis by the commerical banks for foreign exchange. If a firm wanted to lock in the current exchange rate for the receipt of a foreign currency at some point in the future, they could do so by contracting on the forward market with a bank selling that foreign currency at the current rate at the future date. For example, assume that a Canadian firm is exporting coal to Japan which would pay yen in 90 days. If a firm wanted to lock in today's exchange rate they could contract with a bank to sell on the forward market yen in 90 days. When the yen was received the contract would be executed by selling the yen to the bank and receiving the previously agreed upon number of Canadian dollars. NUMEROUS studies have been reported on how the mechanical properties of a bcc metal are affected by interstitial solute atoms in the temperature range where appreciable diffusion occurs in finite time. Only recently, though, has work on an "interstitial-free" iron been reported, this by Leslie and sober,' on an Fe-0.15 pct Ti alloy. The data was limited to a maximum temperature of 296°K. This work presents a systematic study of the flow stress and the activation volume of a similar material as a function of plastic deformation over the temperature range 253" to 473°K. The material studied was Ferrovac E iron containing 0.01 wt pct C and 0.0002 wt pct N annealed at 870°C for 1 hr, and the same iron with an addition of 0.15 wt pct Ti annealed at 870°C for 80 hr; cooling rates being 75°C per hr. In the latter alloy depletion of interstitials in the a-iron matrix associated with the second phase formation was expected. The temperature dependence of the flow stress was measured at 6 = 3.33 x 10-5 sec-1 from 253" to 473°K as a function of the deformation in 0.01 intervals from 0.03 to 0.12 strain. Results for two strains, 0.03 and 0.09 are shown in Fig. 1. The flow stress increased and reached a maximum in the Ferrovac E iron with increasing temperature, but showed a consistent gradual decrease in the Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy. A yield point and Luders region, observed in Ferrovac E, was absent in the Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy. Also, the Ferrovac E exhibited a serrated stress-strain behavior in the temperature range 330" to 400°K; dynamic strain-aging characteristics were absent for the titanium alloy. The activation volume was determined over the same temperature range by the method of stress relaxation at constant strain. Results are shown in Fig. 2. At the temperatures of serrated stress-strain behavior in Ferrovac E the activation volume was found to increase toward infinity and, as the temperature rose, to decrease, to about 100 to 200 v/b3. By contrast, the activation volume for the Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy tended to increase continuously from the initial value of approximately 300 at 300°K to more than 800 at 473°K. Above 400°K, then, the corresponding activation volume values of Ferrovac E were less than that of the Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy. The activation volumes, Fig. 2, appear to depend on dislocation-interstitial interaction in Ferrovac E and on dislocation-dislocation interaction in Ferrovac E-0.15 pct Ti alloy. The gradual increase in the latter metal is associated with thermally activated motion of dislocation segments.' The decrease of the activation volume in Ferrovac E above 400°K is probably related to the diminishing effect of interstitials on dislocations. THE following is a brief description of the method of hoisting ore automatically at the No. 14 shaft of Mcintyre Porcupine Mines, Limited, Schumacher, Ontario. All ore and waste below the 3875-ft. level is hoisted up No. 14 shaft from the 7000-ft. level to the 3000-ft. level. Seventy to seventy-five per cent of the mining is done in this area. The shaft consists of four compartments: a man way, a ventilation compartment and two skip compartments. The hoist, located on the 3500-ft. level (see Figure l), is an 80-in.-diameter, 4-rope friction winder, utilizing two 6-ton front-dump skips in balance. The hoist is powered by a 1,100-h.p. A.C. motor, the maxi-mum speed being 2,400 ft. per minute. The operation can be either manual, push-button automatic from the pocket, or fully automatic. Men can be raised or lowered in the skips, using a collapsible aluminum platform placed inside the skip box.

The anelastic behavior of Ni-C alloys of nominal 0.5 wt pct C has been determined over a wide temperature range. The most prominent damping effect, that due to the presence of C-C pairs, was measured both above and below the Curie temperature. The effect on diffusion of the C-C pairs by magnetic spin ordering is deduced to be very small. The diffusion coefficient for C-C pairs in nickel is given by the expression ThE solid-state diffusion of both interstitial and sub-stitutional solutes in ferromagnetic solvents has been the subject of a number of investigations. Measurements of the self-diffusion of iron,"' the diffusion of nickel1,4 gold,"1 and cobalt4 into iron, the diffusion of vanadium in an Fe-V alloy,' and the diffusion of cobalt and nickel in Co-Ni alloys9 show an unusual behavior. In both the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic regions, far removed from the Curie temperature, the diffusion coefficient, D, obeys an Arrhenius relation. However, in the ferromagnetic region D is markedly lower than would be expected from an extrapolation of D from the paramagnetic region; this results in an increase in the activation energy in the ferromagnetic region. The cause of this effect for self- and substitutional diffusion is uncertain. Since substitutional diffusion is presumed to proceed by the vacancy mechanism, it has been variously suggested that the increase in activation energy below the Curie temperature is due to one of the following causes: 1) an increase in the energy of formation of a vacancy because of local demagnetization around the vacancy,2,3 2) a decrease in vacancy mobility in the ferromagnetic state,' or 3) an effect on the entropy of motion of a vacancy in the ferromagnetic state.5 Quite another explanation for the observed effect has been proposed by Borg.7 The diffusion coefficient is a function of the elastic constants of a metal. Since the temperature dependence of the elastic constants often changes at the Curie temperature, the temperature dependence of D might be expected to undergo a universal change in the vicinity of the Curie temperature. The magnitude of the change in D would, of course, depend on the magnitude of the change in the elastic constants. One might attempt to differentiate between vacancy effects and elastic effects by making measurements on interstitial alloys, in which vacancy effects play no role. Some measurements of this type have been made; this paper reports additional observations. Measurements of the diffusion of carbon in a Fe by a tracer technique8 and of the diffusion of carbon in a Co and in Co-Fe alloys by a decarburization method9 reveal a small effect, if any, on D of the magnetic change at the Curie temperature. If the effect of spin ordering is only to alter the parameters controlling formation or mobility of a vacancy, interstitial diffusion should indeed remain unchanged through the magnetic transition, as these measurements imply.

Of the halogens, the gold iodide complexes are the most stable in aqueous solutions. A series of experiments were performed to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of the leaching reaction between gold and iodide. Using a rotation disk technique, the effects of rotation speed, iodide and iodine concentration, temperature, pH and in the presence of different electrolytes were measured. Oxygen and hydrogen peroxide were also examined as oxidants in the iodide system. The first order reaction rate was found with respect to 13 and half order reaction rate with respect to 1-. The comparison of gold leaching between iodide and cyanide is also presented, in which a rate constant of about 2.6x10-9 mol/cm2? sec for 10-2 M I- and 5x10-3 M I2 was obtained. This value is close to that -for typical cyanidation. Cyclic voltammetry experiments were also performed to examine the electrochemical nature of the reaction which will be presented in part II of this study.

Various methods have been used to evaluate the effectiveness of shields in place. The most common method used is static recording of leg pressures by visually examining pressure gauges. In an effort to more closely examine the shield cycle and therefore the shield effectiveness, Jim Walter Resources has implemented a program of monitoring utilizing a polycorder system which is capable of recording convergence and pressure measurements on a continuous basis. This paper will discuss two longwall panels at Jim Walter Resources which have been monitored.

INFACON 7, the seventh International Ferro Alloys Congress, took place in Trondheim, Norway, in June 1995. The main aim of the Congress, which was held under the auspices of Euroalliages and the Norwegian Ferroalloy Research Organization, was to present the challenges facing the ferro-alloys industry on the road to the 21st century. Halyard Tveit, Chairman of the Technical Committee, summarized these as: ? the transition to a single global market economy ? new demands with regards to quality arising from customer needs, and ? increased awareness of the global environment. In the Plenary Sessions Kouichi Nakamura (Nippon Steel) outlined, from the steel industry's point of view, the relationship between technical advances in the products and more demanding ferro-alloy specifications. Advances in steel manufacturing technology and higher product quality have been supported in the past by raising the quality standards of ferro-alloys. Future requirements are bound to bring about more severe standards, and these need to be established by common agreement between both industries.

The Rise and Shine Shear Zone is a mineralised low angle deformation zone traceable for at least 7 km through biotite zone schist of the Dunstan Range, central Otago. Rocks from the shear zone obtained from recent drillholes are unweathered and facilitate paragenetic studies. There is a progression of mineral deposition from semiductile foliation-parallel shearing, to subsequent folding, and brittle fracturing. Sheared rocks are dominated by microshears containing fine grained hydrothermal muscovite and rutile that has recrystallised from metamorphic muscovite and titanite respectively. Euhedral pyrite occurs within segregations in the schist and is locally brecciated by the shears.   Arsenopyrite occurs within microshears and is intergrown with hyrothermal muscovite. Fractures within relatively undeformed schist are filled with ankerite, siderite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and these veinlets also crosscut the microshears. Locally the schist is folded and zones of brecciation, silicification and vein deposition overprint the rock. Vein quartz and albite predominate and arsenopyrite and gold infill breccia matrix and crosscutting veinlets. Sulphide deposition began in the later stages of metamorphism with pyrite deposited in quartz-albite segregations. Subsequent shearing caused brecciation of some grains and accompanied deposition of arsenopyrite ¦ gold and rare sulphides along foliation-parallel microshears. Minor amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena were then remobilised in ankerite veins that crosscut the shears. In areas of high strain, arsenopyrite was then deposited as euhedral grains in veins and breccias. Synmineralisation deformation caused the brecciation of some grains and gold was deposited infilling fractures in the arsenopyrite. The paragenetic sequence shows gold mineralisation occurred in two distinct sets of structures (semiductile and brittle) that formed at different times in the formation of the shear zone.

De acuerdo a este estudio, entre todos los procesos metalúrgicos utilizados para la recuperación de la plata como la tostación sulfatante, amalgamación, flotación, se encontró que la cianuración es un proceso completo ya que puede reemplazar a las anteriores, con excepción de la amalgamación de plata nativa y otras deficiencias. En consecuencia, la cianuración es el método hidrometalúrgico que aprovecha mejor el poder lixiviante de los cianuros alcalinos en soluciones diluídas y extrae la palta de los relaves. Por ello, se supedita a su contenido económico y a los minerales no económicos entre los que se encuentre asociado.

A series of tension tests were performed on prototype scale steel pipe piles at two sites to evaluate the influence of scale and pile plugging on the unit skin friction developed in axial tension. The first site consisted of a clean medium dense fine sand above the water table. The second site consisted of a loose silty sand with the water table within about 0.5 m of the ground surface. Pile load tests performed at each of the sites included piles with diameters ranging from 73 mm to 114.3 mm, which may be considered driven "micropiles". At the first site, pile lengths of 6.1 m were used; at the second site, pile lengths of 9.1 m were used. Some of the piles were driven open-ended while others were fitted with a conical tip to form a closed end. During installation, pile plugging measurements were taken on the open-ended piles after each 0.30 m of penetration. The piles were allowed to rest for a period of about 30 days after driving prior to performing the axial uplift load tests to failure. The results indicate that in the medium dense fine sand the unit skin friction developed in tension is dependent on both the amount of plugging that occurs and on the size of the pile, which was not the case for the loose silty sand.

Tailings dam failures continue to occur worldwide at an unacceptable rate, averaging two events annually over the last 100 years. Furthermore, tailings dams continue to grow in size, increasing the potential release of tailings and water should they fail. Tailings are generally deposited in a slurry state, with the potential to flow if containment is lost. Understanding the generation and propagation of excess pore water pressure on failure is critical to predicting the flow and run-out of tailings. This paper presents numerical modelling using the material point method indicating that tailings run-out processes may be self-enhanced by the excess pore water pressure induced during the collapse of the containment. Moreover, it is shown that geomorphological features, such as the slope and its surface roughness downstream of the tailings dam, influence the pore water pressure dynamics upstream of the advancing toe.CITATION:Llano-Serna, M A, Bu, L and Williams, D J, 2018. Observations by transmission electron microscoPy of the microstructures in quenched Fe-A1 alloys provide the basis for revision of the Fe-A1 phase diagram. The diagram is characterized by first-order transitions between the disordered ferromagnetic a! solid solution and the two ordered phases FeAl and Fe3Al. However, second-order transitions showing corre-luted fluctuations in the degree of order near the critical temperature occur between the paramagnetic a! and FeAl and the FeAl and FeAl phases. ELUCIDATION of the true nature of the Fe-A1 equilibrium diagram has proven to be an extremely challenging problem as evidenced by the fact that six quite different versions of the iron-rich portions have been published since 1958.&apos;-6 The most recent diagram shown in Fig. 1 was proposed by Rimlinger6 based on X-ray diffraction analysis and dilatometry. He shows the single-phase fields of the ordered phases of the types FeAl(L20) and Fe3A1(D03) and the disordered bcc Fe-A1 solid solution, a, separated from one another in every case by large two-phase regions. Thus, he implies that in Fe-A1 alloys ordering always occurs via a classical phase transition. In contrast to this view, theoretical studies3&apos;" have concluded that the transitions a — FeAl and FeAl — Fe3A1 should be second- or higher-order in character. A further revision of the Fe-A1 diagram of state is presented in Fig. 2 based on our previous8,9 and current observations by transmission electron microscopy of the microstructures found in quenched specimens. The average quenching rate was 50,000°C per sec and although this was sufficiently rapid to prevent Fe3A1-type ordering below -550°C it was not sufficient to suppress ordering of the type FeAl in the temperature range -650" to 800°C. However, ordering during the quench is easily recognized since the FeAl phase formed during holding at temperature rapidly develops large antiphase domains whereas FeAl formed during quenching has a very fine domain size, -50Å diam. Each symbol in Fig. 2 indicates the result of a micro-structural examination of specimens heat-treated (-1 hr) until equilibrium was established. The results will be discussed in the order of the points, A - Dl marked on both diagrams with reference to the phase fields, critical temperature, and "transition" ranges, respectively. The dark-field micrograph corresponding to point A is shown in Fig. 3 and was obtained using a 111 reflection of the Fe3A1 structure which reveals both a&apos;/4<111> and a&apos;/2<100> antiphase domain boundaries.10 The structure observed in this specimen is typical of single-phase Fe3A1 and shows no evidence for FeAl or any other additional phase. The dark-field micrograph shown in Fig. 4 corresponds to point B on the two diagrams.
