"INTRODUCTION This report presents factual data obtained by the Bureau of Mines in the course of an investigation of the Antler mine in the Cedar Valley mining district, Mohave County, Ariz.The Antler property was first examined by Thomas L. Chapman, mining engineer, Bureau of Mines, on December 18, 1943, and January 28, 1944. In June 1945, A. H. Wadsworth, Jr., and R. L. Griggs, geologists, Federal Geo¬logical Survey, examined the Antler mine and several other mines in the district. Both Chapman and Wadsworth recommended diamond drilling of the Antler property to determine the character and extent of ore deposition.In October 1946, the surface and underground workings were surveyed by George Huseman, Mining engineer, and T. M. Romslo, project engineer. The following month Eldred. D. Wilson, geologist of the Arizona Bureau of Mines, assisted by the project engineer, mapped the geology. Subsequently trails were built to drilling sites and diamond drilling started January 16, 1947. The project was completed April 25, 1947.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. A process, in which arsenic in the residue is transformed directly into scorodite and copper dissolves into the solution simultaneously, was studied. The process was carried out in acidic ferrous sulfate solution under oxygen pressure. The optimum conditions of the process were determined as follows: the initial H2SO4 concentration of 10 g/L; liquid/solid ratio of 10; Fe/As molar ratio in the feedstock of 1; the addition of calcium lignosulphonate was 1% of sludge; oxygen pressure, temperature and reaction time were 1.5 MPa, 150 °C and 6 h, respectively. Under these conditions, arsenic transformed to crystalline scorodite in size of 5–10 μm, and the transformation efficiency reached 97.60%; meanwhile, the copper was leached with a high efficiency of 93.34%. The stability of the leaching residue was evaluated by TCLP testing, and the results indicated the concentration of arsenic in the leaching solution was extremely low as 0.04 mg/L and met the standard of safe stockpile.

"The Ansil deposit is located in the Noranda mining camp in the southern part of the Abitibi greenstone belt. /twas discovered in 1981 and production began in 1989 with proven reserves of 1.58 Mt grading 7.2% copper, 0.9% zinc, 26.5 glt of silver and 1.6 glt of gold. It is centered at a depth of 1.3 kilometre and represents one of the deepest ore discoveries ever made from surface.The deposit consists of a single massive sulphide lens located at the contact between the Northwest Rhyolite and the Rusty Ridge Andesite. The lens strikes north-south and dips 50° east. The thickness of the lens may reach up to 35 m and can change very abruptly both along strike and along dip. The maximum thicknesses of the sulphide lens are reached in its upper (western) and at its lower (eastern) edges, thus giving the deposit its present shape of two sulphide domes connected by a thinner central portion. The lower dome is underlain by a thick accumulation of massive magnetite which may reach 10 to 15m in thickness. The upper and lower domes are underlain by two distinct pipe-shaped zones of stringer and disseminated sulphides which merge with a larger stringer zone at depth.The Ansi/ deposit displays strong relationships between its morphology and the distribution of metals. Hydrothermal alteration consists of chloritization and sericitization. Chlorite alteration is closely associated with stringer sulphide mineralization while sericite is developed in diffuse zones bordering the chloritic zones. Unlike other similar deposits, the Ansil deposit is characterized by very extensive alteration and sulphide mineralization in the hangingwall of the massive sulphides. Several features of the deposit are consistent with an origin from a submarine hydrothermal system which was particularly long-lived, and which thus promoted the build-up of very high fluid temperatures with extensive replacement (and enrichment) of pre-existing sulphides after their original deposition onto the seafloor."

Eruption of rhyolitic ash-flow tuffs in the area of the McDermitt (Cordero) caldera began about 17.4 m.y. ago and continued for about 1.5 m.y. During this period of silicic eruptions, a circular area about 30 km in diameter collapsed to form a caldera that subsequently filled with sedimentary and volcanic rocks. 3 A total of more than 200 km of silicic rocks was erupted from the volcano. The final phase of igneous activity, about 15.5 m.y. ago, included resurgent doming and intrusion in the central part of the caldera. Three to 4 m.y. later +I2 m.y. ago), hydrothermal solutions using the northern part of the caldera ring fractures as conduits deposited cinnabar, pyrite, alunite, and other minerals in tuffaceous lake beds and volcanic rocks accumulated within the caldera. The ore-forming solutions may have been a residuum from the silicic magma or connate water or ground water heated by the still-hot resurgent magma in the central part of the caldera. The source of the mercury has not been identified. Later oxidation of the sulfide minerals and redistribution of the supergene minerals corderoite, several mercury nitro-oxychlorides, marcasite, iron, and titanium oxides in the sedimentary rocks account for most of the newly discovered ore body at Cordero.

Centrifugal force has been used for centuries for separating liquids but machines for doing this are a comparatively recent development. The use of these machines is being extended into many industries but this paper is confined to their use in the oil industry. The centrifugal machine is found at the well where "cut oil" is dehydrated for acceptance by pipe lines; and in the refinery and byproduct plant. In fact, wherever finely divided suspended particles should be removed from an oil, there is a possible use for a centrifugal machine, if the particles have, or can be made to have, a specific gravity different from that of the oil. Centrifugal machines are also used for cleaning fuel and lubricating oils and dehydrating transformer oils. Applications and Results When oil comes from the well mixed with water, it is spoken of as cut oil. Settling often does not remove sufficient water for the oil to be accepted by pipe lines, thus necessitating chemical or other treatment. Centrifuging alone, or following chemical treatment, effectively prepares such oil for pipe lines, as is shown by the following data: WateR, Etc. Wat~R. Etc. This report chronicles the historical development of longwall mining in the United States and speculates on future developments to the turn of the century. Five eras of technological development during the modern period are described and analyzed. These eras discuss the development of (1) mechanized extraction, (2) self advancing roof supports, (3) high capacity roof supports, (4) shield supports, and (5) system automation. Current trends are analyzed in terms of: longwall utilization, production capability, support capacity, face widths, and new technological developments. From these analyses, the future of longwall mining to the year 2000 is speculated. It is concluded that longwall mining will continue to grow in importance during the next decade and that the next major technological milestone will be the realization of a fully automated longwall mining system.

Detailed mapping, using a large diameter diamond-drill in conjunction with high resolution reflection seismics, has increased known resources of kaolin clay and glass-grade silica sand from scattered deposits generally < 1 km2 to large areas of Cretaceous valley fill up to 130 m thick. Detailed chemical and physical analysis of drill core is presently underway. Silica sand deposits intersected in this study are up to 99.4 % SiO2 without beneficiation. Light grey to white kaolin clays identified by XRD and DT A have concentrations values (without beneficiation) up to 47.28% SiO2, 37.44% Al2O3, 0.45% Fe2O3, 0.49% K2O, 0.07% Nap, 0.07% CaO and 0.39% MgO.

Production of a coal preparation plant is governed by many restrictions, such as the tonnage of different products and blends that can be sold within a given period, capacities and output proportions of the cleaning and sizing units, blending proportions, quality specifications, and costs and prices for the various products. Determination of the tonnage of each product and blend that should be made in order to obtain the maximum profit can be difficult unless a systematic method such as linear programming is used. In this paper the basic method of linear programming is described briefly. The Old Ben No. 9 preparation plant is used as an example to illustrate in detail how eqwations can be written to form a linear programming model of a coal preparation plant. Three sample problems, each requiring 56 or more equations and 63 structural variables, were solved with an IBM 650 computer. Linear programming is one of several mathematical tools used for operations research. It has been applied to many fields and has been used by a number of industries either to maximize the profits of certain operations or to minimize costs. P. B. Nalle and L. W. weeks&apos; have described the use of the method by the Riverside Cement Co. to minimize the cost of blending raw materials to make portland cement. Their problem is to obtain at minimum cost a mix with certain specifications from a number of possible materials which have various costs and various amounts of CaO, SiO2, Fe2O3, and other constituents. In a paper on the use of linear programming by the National Coal Board in England, K. B. Williams and K. B. Halley2 describe how the transportation method, a variation of linear programming, is used to minimize the cost of sending 37 grades of coal from 28 mines to seven central washing plants which produce coal for furnace coke and foundry coke. The various coals have different percentages of volatile matter, moisture, sulfur, ash, and phosphorous, so there is considerable choice in how they can be blended to meet the specifications of the two products. The purpose of this paper is to show how linear programming can be used to maximize the profits of a coal washing plant which produces individual final products as well as blends. The Old Ben Corp. furnished assumed sample data from their Old Ben Mine No. 9 preparation plant for this investigation. However, the data that have been used are entirely the author&apos;s responsibility. METHOD OF LINEAR PROGRAMMING Numerous articles and books have been written on the theory and applications of linear programming.3-5 However, since the method has not been widely applied by the mining industry, a brief, nontheo-retical discussion of its basic method seems to be in order. Linear programming (Table I) is used to determine the best possible solution to a number of interdependent activities. It is essentially a method for making systematic selections from a number of possible solutions to determine positively the optimum solution. There may be other equally good solutions but no better ones. Each activity must have linear coefficients and there must be a criterion to judge how good the solution actually is. The banded iron formation-hosted iron ore deposits located in the Hamersley Ranges of Western Australia contain marker shales that are used to distinguish lithology for geological and orebody mapping. These marker shales produce distinctive signatures in the natural gamma downhole logs, which are conventionally manually interpreted. This paper proposes an alternative method of automatically identifying these shales using dynamic time warping (DTW). A Gaussian processes (GPs)-based method for automatic identification is also considered. Both methods are tested on a deposit that contains the Marra Mamba sequence of the Hamersley Province.Both methods were trained to predict the location of the desired shales, and the resulting outputs were compared with a manual interpretation of the results to determine the accuracy. The GP method can identify signatures with an accuracy between 87.0 per cent and 92.0 per cent, which increases to 92.9 per cent and 95.7 per cent where the GP is certain. The DTW method has an accuracy between 90.0 per cent and 91.6 per cent, which increases to 94.0 per cent and 95.4 per cent where the DTW is certain.The GP method has several advantages, including a more automated library building process, a probabilistic output and a shorter run time. However, the DTW method was capable of accepting more distortion in the signature and therefore identified more signatures. This is important in a deposit where the signals are frequently distorted by events such as hydration and folding. Both methods provide a viable alternative to the current manual detection, but their differences make them applicable to different cases.CITATION:Silversides, K and Melkumyan, A, 2014. The location, features, qualities, and extent of iron occurrences and the associated resources--limestone and dolomite, bentonite, coal-lignite, petroleum and natural gas, power, and water--are evaluated. The results of pioneer beneficiation tests on South Dakota taconite are discussed. In addition, pertinent features of taconite development, cost factors, the Western and Central United States trade area and markets are reported. The State&apos;s production of iron ores until 1963 has been small and for purposes other than the manufacture of iron. This investigation disclosed the probability of large resources of taconite in Pennington and Lawrence Counties. The average iron content is 29 percent, and a 65-percent or better iron concentrate might be produced. Ample resources are available for mining and processing taconite. An investment of at least $26 million would be required for a plant capable of turning out 1 million tons of agglomerated iron concentrate per year. The feasibility of such an enterprise is indicated, but intensive investigation and research must be completed to justify such an investment,

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that 89 water well drillers died on the job between 1992 and 2002, and 28 of these deaths were electrocutions (Figure 1). In fact, elec­trical accidents are the leading on-the-job killer of water well drillers. The use of electricity is such an integral part of our lives that we usually take it for granted, but if we don?t understand or choose to ignore the hazards associated with electricity, the results can be deadly. Why is electrical shock so dangerous? If the voltage (of a shock) is sufficient to drive electrical current through your body, just 10 milliamps of cur­rent (1000 milliamps = 1 amp) can cause muscles to contract and prevent you from releasing an energized wire or tool in your grip. As little as 30 milliamps of current can paralyze your breathing, and 75 milli­amps can cause your heart to stop pumping blood (ventricular fibrillation). As a comparison, a small bedroom night-light draws about 30 to 60 milliamps. Other factors influence how severely you?ll be shocked if you touch a live electrical circuit, such as the path electrical current takes through your body and how long it flows, as well as your body weight. How much voltage is needed to drive electrical cur­rent through your body? Not much! Generally, any power source at 50 volts AC or higher is considered dangerous.

In basic ([KOH + KCl] with a total polarity of 2) or acidic (2N H2SO4) electrolytes and at anodic current densities of more thun 2 to 4 ma per sq cnz, n-type GaAs single crystals of lozo resistivity preferentially dissol~je forming etch tunnels with triangular or civc~ilay cross sections and of a width between 0.5 arid 5 p. These etch tunnels are oriented along any one of the four possible (111) directions of GaAs. However, their growth occurs only in one direction of a given (111) whick apparently is determined by the atomic sequence Ga —As (and not the rezlerse) in respect to an individual valence bridge in the crystal. It is concluded from comparison with the cubic lattice structure of GaAs that the etch tunnels represent macroscopic evidence for the tetrahedral bonds and their polar properties. If the anodic current density is increased the tunnel fomation results in the development of a fibrous surface layer consisting of GaAs. The latter separates frorn the substrate (in an anodic s~irface disintegration process) by the growth pressure of an As,0, filnz forming in the interior of the fibrous layer, 100 to 200 µ under the surface, at more than about 50 ma per sq cni. The fibrous GaAs film has the same crystallographic orientation as the substvate and represents a skeleton of the original crystal. Since the etch-tunnel density in a separated GaAs layer is about 108 c?n-&apos;, and the etch tunnels develop only along (111) in a given polar direction, it is assurraed tlmt the dislocations have no influence on the growth of these tunnels. ElECTROLYTIC treatment of smooth surfaces of poly- and single-crystalline GaAs at high anodic current densities causes the formation of porous surface layers.&apos; This phenomenon suggests comparison with effects being observed with magnesium,&apos; indium,, gallium,4 and aluminum5 and known as "anodic disintegration". The purpose of the present paper is to explore and to explain the reasons for the formation of such surface layers on GaAs and, in particular, to investigate the influence of the lattice polarity of this III-V compound semiconductor in the (111) direction on the anodic dissolution behavior. GaAs SINGLE CRYSTALS For the experiments described below GaAs single crystals from the Monsanto Co., St. Louis, Mo., were used. Their impurity levels were below 1 ppm and their dopant levels between 1 and 100 ppm. They were grown in (111) using the Czochralski or the gradient-freeze technique. The crystals had n-type conductivity and electric resistivities between 1 and 5 ohm-cm. EXPERIMENTAL The GaAs single-crystal rods were cut perpendicularly to (111) into wafers of about 1 mm thickness using a wire-blade crystal slicer and an aqueous slurry of Sic or a diamond saw. The orientation of the faces of these wafers were checked by Laue back-reflection patterns. If there was a deviation from (111) the faces were abraded under a certain angle using grinding paper and distilled water. The damaged surface layer was removed from each crystal by chemical etching with a mixture of 1HF:1HNO3: 1H20 or 2HF:1HNO3:2HAc (glacial). {110) faces were obtained by mechanical cleavage, producing surfaces which did not require a further treatment. The GaAs wafers were mounted using "alligator" clamps instead of soldered electrical contacts.&apos; Only the bare crystal surfaces were dipped into the electrolyte. The clamps were coated with insulating wax to prevent any contact with the electrolyte. The experiments were carried out in aqueous 2 N H2so4,&apos; or in an aqueous solution of KOH and KCl1 (1 mole KOH + 1 mole KCl in 1000 cu cm solution). Anodic current densities up to several hundred ma per sq cm were applied for periods between 30 sec and 2 hr. For the purpose of investigating the initial steps of disintegration the anodic current density applied never exceeded 20 ma per sq cm. The films which partially separated from the anodic surfaces under high-field conditions were treated with KOH to further their detachment by dissolving the As2O3 formed. The washed and dried films were pasted to strips of filter paper, and Laue pictures were made. The back-reflection patterns obtained were compared with those of the original anode surface before and after anodic dissolution. Furthermore, space reciprocal lattices7 were constructed from asymmetric rotation crystal patternsa which permitted the determination of the crystallographic orientation of the detached films of the corrugated anodic surfaces. The disintegration products were identified from assymmetric powder patterns.8 The polarity of the {111) faces was determined by chemical etching with mixtures of 1HF:1H2O2(30 pct): 2H2O or 1HNO3:2H2O. Different patterns on each of two inverse (111) sides appeared.&apos;-l8 The correlation of these patterns to the Ga{111) or the As(111) side has already been established by the use of light figures,18-20 by X-ray diffraction near the absorption edges of gallium and arsenic,&apos;lmZ4 and by LEED measurements.25 The geometric structure of these surfaces and the interior of the anodically attacked crystals were observed and photographed with a high-power microscope using oil immersion objectives up to magnification of X1720.

This paper presents the results of the data obtained in the first stage of a long-range study at high pressures of the system, vapor-hydrate-water rich liquid-hydrocarbon rich liquid. The data presented are for the three-phase systems in which no hydrocarbon liquid exists. Tests were performed on 10 gases at pressures from 1,000 to 10,000 psia. One of these was substantially pure methane, and the remainder were binary mixtures of methane with ethane, propane, iso-butane and normal butane. Several conclusions may be drawn from the data. 1. Contrary to previous extrapolations, the hydrocarbon mixtures tested form straight lines in the range of 6,000 to 10,000 psia which are parallel to the curves for pure methane, when the log of pressure is plotted vs hydrate formation temperature. 2. The hydrate formation temperature may be predicted accurately at pressures from 6,000 to 10,000 psia by using a modified form of the Clapeyron equation. The total hydrate curve may be predicted by using the vapor-solid equilibrium constants of Carson and Katz&apos; to 4,000 psia and joining the two segments with a smooth continuous curve between 4,000 and 6,000 psia. 3. The use of gas specific gravity as a parameter in hydrate correlations is unsatisfactory at elevated pressures. 4. The hydrate crystal lattice is pressure sensitive at elevated pressures. INTRODUCTION Prior to 1950 many studies had been made of the hydrate forming conditions for typical natural gases to pressures of 4,000 psia.""&apos;"&apos;"" Most of these attempted to correlate the log of system pressure vs hydrate formation temperature, with gas specific gravity as a parameter. One of the more promising correlations was made by Katz, et al, which utilized vapor-solid equilibrium constants. The only published data above 4,000 psia are those of Kobayashi and Katz7 for pure methane to a pressure of 11,240 psia. In the intervening years, most published charts for the high-pressure range have represented nothing more than extrapolations of the low-pressure data, with the methane line serving as a general guide. The reliability of these charts has become increasingly doubtful (and critical) in our present technology as we handle more high-pressure systems. The portion of our high-pressure hydrate research program reported here was designed to: (1) investigate the reliability of existing charts; (2) obtain actual data on gas mixtures to 10,000 psia; and (3.) develop a simple hydrate correlation that was more reliable than those which simply used specific gravity as a parameter. Binary mixtures of methane and ethane, propane normal butane, or iso-butane were injected into a high-pressure visual cell containing an excess of distilled water. Hydrates were formed and then melted to observe the decomposition temperature of the hydrates at pressures from 1,000 to 10,000 psia. EQUIPMENT The equipment consisted of a Jerguson 10,000-lb high-pressure visual cell, a 10,000-1b high-pressure blind cell and a Ruska 25,000-1b pressure mercury pump. The visual cell was placed in a constant-temperature water bath controlled by a refrigeration unit and an electric filament heater. A Beckman GC-2 gas chromatograph was used in analyzing the gas mixtures after each run was completed. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE After evacuating the gas system, the heavier hydrocarbon was injected into the high-pressure mixing cell to that pressure necessary to give the desired composition. This cell then was pressured to 1,100 to 1,200 psia by methane from a high-pressure cylinder. The mixing cell holding the gas contained a steel flapper plate and was shaken intermittently over a period of 15 minutes. After mixing, the valve to the high-pressure visual cell containing excess distilled water was opened, and the gas mixture was allowed to flow into the cell. The temperature in the water bath was lowered 10" to 15&apos;F below the estimated hydrate decomposition point. As a first check, the temperature was increased at a rate of 1°F every six minutes to find the approximate point of decomposition. It was again lowered 1.5° to 5°F to form hydrates. The temperature was raised to within l° of the estimated decomposition point and then increased 0.2F every 10 to 15 minutes until the hydrates decomposed. This procedure was repeated at various pressures to obtain 7 to 13 points for each mixture between 1,000 and 10,000 psia. After completion of the hydrate decomposition tests, the gas mixture composition was analyzed with a calibrated gas chromatograph. These gas analyses have an estimated error of ± .1 per cent.

Fly ash and zeolite have strong absorption to cations since their porous microstructure. The porosities of fly ash and zeolite can also be increased by modification, which improves the absorption of the materials. This research showed that the effects of modified fly ash and zeolite to remove ammonia nitrogen from rainwater. The optimal reaction time, additive amount of materials, and pH value of the stormwater to remove ammonia nitrogen were experimentally determined. For modified fly ash, the optimal removal rate of ammonia nitrogen from 100 ml stormwater was 74.41% with the addition of 10.0g fly ash, 1.5 hours of the reaction time, and 8 of pH value. To the modified zeolite, the optimal removal rate of ammonia nitrogen was 51.22% at the reaction conditions of 2.0g of zeolite, 1 hour of reaction time, and 7 of pH value.

During the recent study of lubricating oils carried on in the San Francisco laboratory of the United States Bureau of Mines, it became desirable to distill the oils used in the experimental work at pressures as low as 10 millimeters (mercury column) absolute. In the effort to Overcome difficulties and eliminate sources of error, certain changes were made in the apparatus for vacuum distillation used by the Bureau of Mines for crude petroleum.4 These changes were described in R.I. 2819, issued in July, 1927. Subsequent to the publication of R.I. 2819 several other changes have been made, and the present form of the apparatus for vacuum distillation of lubricating oils is described in this revision of R.I. 2819. These changes were found to give more accurate checks on duplicate distillations. The major part of the credit for the laboratory work which developed the changes in the apparatus and method revised herein is due to Boyd Guthrie, assistant petroleum chemist, and R. V. Higgins, junior chemist, o the San Francisco laboratory, United States Bureau of Mines. DESCRIPTION OF APPARATUS The distilling flask employed is essentially the Hempel flask as used by the United States Bureau of Mines for the analytical distillation of petroleum.5 he complete apparatus is shown in Figure 1. The fractionating column and exposed portion of the flask is wrapped with 4 inch asbestos rope and then surrounded by a cylindrical hood of 1/8 inch pliable asbestos sheet with a narrow air space between the wrapping and the cylindrical hood. This was found necessary to prevent any radiation or convection heat losses from the column, and resulted in obtaining a more even and constant fractionation by eliminating any dephlegmating action caused by temperature changes around the column.

Traditional methods of gold extraction have involved comminution and processing via cyanide leaching, all of which are associated with energy, cost and environmental implications. Subsequently, numerous opportunities for improvement and optimisation strategies in gold mining and processing have been explored, including heap leaching, which has significantly lowered comminution costs. This paper explores the effect of the more energy efficient high-pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) on the comminution behaviour (especially on the crack density) and cyanide leaching performance of laboratory reactors study on run-of-mine gold ore comprising the Ventersdorp Contact Reef (VCR) and the Elsburg Reefs (ER), sourced from Carletonville in the Witwatersrand Basin in South Africa. The ore was comminuted using HPGR at three different pressure settings (120, 90 and 60 bar). Large (-16/+11.2 mm) and small (-5.6/+4 mm) particles of the HPGR product where then mineralogically characterised using optical microscopy, quantitative evaluation of minerals by scanning electron microscopy (QEMSCAN) and X-ray computer tomography (CT) before cyanidation. The results of the leach experiments indicated a correlation between gold extraction, particle size and crack density. Mineralogical characterisation of the ore indicates that the Fe-sulfides present in the VCR are likely to be more reactive than those in the ER, thus having a more favourable influence on gold cyanidation. CERN, the European Laboratory for Particle Physics, are upgrading their existing particle accelerator for the next generation of experiments and have three major packages of underground construction work in progress. Each package involves the construction of shafts, cavern, tunnels and surface buildings. This paper gives an overview of CERN, the LHC Project and a more detailed discussion of design process, design review and construction works of Experimental Point 5. The LHC works at Point 5 include two large shafts, two major parallel caverns with a total span of 50 m, which are separated by a 7 m wide and 28 m high concrete pillar, and a system of secondary tunnels and caverns. The overburden ground consists of around 50 m of water bearing moraine (silty, clayey gravels and sands) overlying 20 mof molasse, which consists of horizontally bedded marls and sandstones. The shaft shave been constructed with ground freezing, primary concrete lining, membrane and secondary slip formed concrete lining. The concrete pillar was then excavated and concreted in advance of excavation of the two caverns. Cavern construction includes primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by waterproof membrane and primary support of shotcrete lining and rock bolts, followed by water proof membrane and insitu concrete secondary lining.

"The recently opened Mansueto Library at the University of Chicago campus was a 2012 OPA runner-up. The dramatic elliptical shaped dome of this structure tells only part of this structure’s story. The underground automated storage and book retrieval system below ground required excavations as deep as 55 ft (17 m). The system that allows the University to store many of its publications well below grade also required an approximately 50 ft (15 m) clear span for the perimeter walls between the lower level and street level slabs. The latter requirement allows the conveyors to operate freely to retrieve and transport publications up to the lobby level. The design-assist-build team worked together to develop the most cost-effective solution for below-grade work in this challenging urban and geologic environment.The perimeter of the new oval-shaped library is over 620 ft (189 m) long and sits in a central location on campus—adjacent to the Regenstein Library and two city streets and the Henry Moore sculpture, which commemorates the location of the first self-sustaining controlled nuclear reaction. The new library construction not only had to meet challenging structural and geotechnical requirements, but also had to be sensitive to its active and historic surroundings. The soils at the site consist of about 25 ft (7.6 m) of sand, followed by lean clay, generally increasing in stiffness to the top of the dolomitic limestone. Five to 10 ft (1.5 to 3 m) pockets of saturated sand also lie on the north side of the site at about 45 ft (13.7 m) below grade. The top of weathered rock varies in elevation from 59 ft (18 m) below grade in the south to 69 ft (21 m) in the north. There is 1 to 2 ft (30 to 60 cm) of weathered rock. Groundwater at the site is about 7 ft (2 m) below grade.The new structure would extend 55 ft (17 m) below grade through saturated sand strata and into weathered rock for part of the structure’s footprint, so it was critical that the new permanent retention system minimize groundwater seepage laterally through the structure’s wall as well as piping through the weathered rock below the structure. The perimeter walls had to be very stiff to minimize ground movement around the structure’s perimeter due to the significant clear span between slabs."

RBH Note: In the early days of drill & blast tunneling the jobs utilized large crews of drillers and muckers. Advance per round was limited (typically around four feet) but two rounds per 8-hour shift were expected, around the clock. The scene after a shot must have been chaos, with the muckers expected to quickly make space for the drill setup. Makes one wonder how much time was allowed for the smoke and fumes to clear. Note the headgear of the tunnelers.
