This circular is concerned with eight nonferrous scrap metals as they generated, collected, prepared, and consumed in California. Brief reference also is included with respect to Nevada and Hawaii. Four of these scrap metals - copper, lead, aluminum, and zinc - are of major importance and make up about 95 percent of the total value, whereas the remaining four - antimony, magnesium, nickel, and tin - make up the remaining 5 percent. For convenience, the subject matter is divided into three parts, (1) Data with respect to the collection, preparation, and marketing practices that are common activities to all the nonferrous scrap metals; (2) separate discussions and statistical data with respect to each of the eight nonferrous scrap metals in California; and (3) data with respect to Nevada and Hawaii.

"The rising popularity of microwave heating in mineral processing has fuelled the need for knowledge concerning dielectric properties of minerals. Dielectric property and microwave absorption property of anthracite were measured over a temperature range of 20-100°C at 2.45GHz by using an open-ended coaxial sensor measurement system. The results show that the dielectric constant, loss factor and loss tangent increase with temperature rising at 2.45GHz. Microwave absorption properties of anthracite are highly dependent on temperature and frequency. At frequency of 2.45GHz frequency used in microwave metallurgy, anthracite is suitable for reducing agent to achieve fast elevation of temperature then returning to original state. The research will be helpful in explaining the thermal running of microwave dielectric heating the anthracite.IntroductionThe application of microwave heating in minerals processing and treatment has recently attracted great interest from the metallurgical industry. Compared with conventional heating methods, the advantages of microwave heating include rapid and selective heating, uniform distribution, high efficiency, fast on and off switching as well as flexible and modular design[l-3]. As a result of these advantages, microwave heating has been applied in a variety of mineral processing and extractive metallurgy, such as microwave-assisted ore grinding, microwave heating for carbothermic reduction and acid leaching of ilmenite ore, microwave drying, microwave-assisted roasting and smelting of sulfide concentrate, microwave-assisted spent carbon regeneration and microwave-assisted waste management [ 4-6]. Though the application of microwave heating in the metallurgical industry is promising, further studies on the interaction between microwave radiation and minerals and its effects are highly desired to develop innovative techniques for minerals processing and ore treatment using microwave heating [7]."

The temperature at which th: quenched 0' (ordered bcc) phase transfo.rms to the ( (complex hexagonal) phase on heating has been examined for certain Ag-Zn and Ag-Au-Zn alloys using an electrical resistivity method. The transition temperature decreases by approxinzately 7°C as the zinc content is reduced by 1 at. pct. The critical temperature, Tc, for long-range order has also been measured for a number of Ag-Au-Zn alloys. Extrapolation to zero gold content suggests that Tc decreases by approximately 5°C per 1 at. pct reduction in zinc content. The 0 phase of the Ag-Zn system exists over a narrow range near the composition Ag zn,' Fig. 1, and has a bcc structure which is disordered above 272°C. Slow cooling to temperatures below the range 274"/258"C allows the complex hexagonal phase, r° to form.2 This is the stable structure at room temperature.3 Upon quenching 0 -phase alloys from high temperatures, it is found that the 0 — (' transformation is suppressed; but ordering takes place (i.e., 0 -0'). Reactions between metal and slag are of decisive importance for metallurgical processing. In the continuous casting process, where metal solidifies at the metal-slag interface, reaction products can cause surface defects, with quality damages of the cast products as a consequence. These investigations are focused on the contact area between casting flux and metal. The samples were taken from the mould during the casting process. The results show that layers up to approximately 300 nm from the slag/metal interface represent a specific reaction space. Sodium in this layer on the slag side plays a specific role, which is explained on the basis of experimental results. The transport of oxygen near the interface and the charge transfer is explained on the basis of the ionic character of the slag. The mass transfer rate of oxygen crossing the interface is calculated from measured data, and conclusions concerning the stability of the interfacial tension are made. Two case histories are presented on the evaluation of static bearing capacity of piles driven in soils that exhibit time dependent strength changes. Under consideration are a steel and a concrete pile driven into soils generally consisting of silty and clayey fine sand. Pile dynamic measurements and analyses were performed on both piles during initial installation, and also during restrike one week later. This information was used to predict each pile's long term capacity (defined as 14 days after initial drive), which was then compared to that measured with a static load test. Agreement between predicted and measured capacities were remarkably good, with an average error of only 4.5 percent. Two weeks after driving, total pile capacities were three times those at the end of drive. If only the skin friction was considered, however, it increased by an average factor of 16. The increase in pile capacity was determined to be linear over the time period considered.

A study has been made of the use of ThO2-Y2O3 solid electrolytes to determine activity of chromium in Fe-Cr and Ni-Cr alloys in the temperature range 1300° to 1700°K. This method has been shown to give results which agree with the best vapor pressure measurements. SEVERAL investigations1"5 have been made of chromium activities in Fe-Cr alloys. Most of these have been made by vapor pressure measurements using knudsen cell techniques while one has been made using gas equilibration with H2/H2O gas mixtures. In the present investigation electromotive force measurements have been made on this system using a thoria yttria solid electrolyte. This system was -chosen to establish the technique of measurement at low oxygen potentials, before extending it to Fe-Ni-Cr alloys. The cell used was Pt Cr • Cr2O3 ilThO2 • Y2O3 llalloy • Cr2O3 IPt Since the oxygen pressure of the chromium-chromic oxide mixture lay in the range 10"19 to 1027 atm in the temperature range investigated, thoria yttria electrolytes were used. It was soon found during the investigation that considerable care was required to prepare satisfactory electrolytes and a study was made to find the best method of preparing pellets of TI1O2-Y2O3 solid solution of as near theoretical density as possible. Various compositions in the range 2 to 15 mole pct Y2O3 were studied but the experimental measurements were made with electrolytes containing 4 to 5 pct Y2O3. The method of preparation finally adopted was to use thorium oxalate and yttria as raw materials. The thorium oxalate was decomposed at 900°C for 6 hr to give a reactive powder. This powder was then mixed with the appropriate amount of yttria and ground in an agate mortar for about 4 hr. The powder was moistened with absolute alcohol as a lubricant and pressed in a metal die at a pressure of 7 tons per sq in. The pellets were then heated at 1100°C for 24 hr followed by 24 hr at 1250°C. After this firing cycle the material was reground and repelleted and again fired at 1100° and 1250°C followed by heating for 7 days at 1600°C. It was found in later experiments that a further firing of 4 hr at 2000°C improved the density further and gave pellets of only 2 pct porosity. After firing, the pellets were polished on emery paper and finally with the 2 µ diamond paste. The polishing was followed by a final firing of 24 hr at 1500°C. Investigation showed that this final treatment minimized reaction between the electrolytes and chromium oxide. It was believed that this was because of a lowering of the surface energy of the electrolyte surface. The dynamic properties of the KYF-320 flotation machine which is one of the biggest flotation machines in the world were tested and then verified by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Aeration rate testing results suggest that he effect of circulation holes on the fluid state in the flotation cell becomes gradually smaller when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The dispersion degree of air increases with the increasing impeller speed and decreases with the increasing aeration rate, and it increases slightly when the impeller speed is greater than 107 r/min. The air holdup increases and then decreases with the increasing impeller speeds and aeration rates, and a maximum value of air holdup is shown at impeller speed of 107 r/min with a value of 12.28%. CFD simulation results are in good agreement with these testing results. Industrial-scale test was carried out using this 320 m3 flotation machine for the flotation of Cu ores. The results show that Cu content increases from 0.06% of crude ore to 1.26% of concentrate, and the S content increases from 0.39% of crude ore to 24.83% of concentrate. Moreover, using this flotation machine 5.88% of power is saved compared to other type of large flotation machine.

Rock bolts are components of tunnel support structures and their efficacy in reinforcement requires the appropriate estimation of the bolt pre-tension. However, cases of ineffective rock bolt application due to loosening are common which leads to the potential failure of the support structures, thus negatively affecting the tunnel stability. The effective employment of pre-tensioned bolt within support structures requires an appropriate installation tension as a result of sufficient bolt head/nut pre-load. Henceforth, this paper presents a load indicator washer (LIW) capable of withstanding assigned static loading as well as provides an appropriate pre-tension. The different LIW breadths are numerically analysed in the finite element code (ABAQUS) to estimate deformation when a designated 60-kN pre-load is applied. The numerical simulation employs a bi-linear isotropic hardening constitutive law governed by the von Mises yield criterion. The simulation also considers the nominal temperature of the nutLIW-rock bolt connection. Therefore, a long-term relaxation effect on bolt pre-tension as a result of stress relaxation is neglected. The compressive force required to achieve the LIW-predetermined deformation is the bolt pre-tension. It is drawn from the simulation results that the 1.5-, 2.0-, 3.0-, 3.5-, and 4.0-mm-thick LIWs are completely flattened when subjected to 28-, 42.5-, 65-, 76-, and 88-kN pre-load respectively.

"ABSTRACTThe city of Santa Cruz, Bolivia, is historically dominated by houses and three to five storey buildings.The geology in and around the city is such that even very light buildings need to be supported onpiles. The recent increase of the Bolivian economy, notably that of Santa Cruz, has created a demandfor new residential as well as office and industrial buildings, which mostly consist of multi-storey orhigh-rise buildings with significantly larger foundation loads. Foundation piles have become largerand longer, and the load on individual piles is increased. The development has resulted in an increasein the demand for more sophisticated design and construction methods and stricter approach toverifying the quality of the construction processes and results.This paper describes to geology of the Santa Cruz region and how the geotechnical conditions areconsidered in the design and construction of piled foundations. The improvement of past constructionand design techniques, based mostly on bored piles constructed with bentonite slurry, is beingreplaced with new methods of constructing bored piles, e.g. the Full Displacement Pile (FDP) andincorporation of techniques such as enlarging the pile toe, e.g., with the Expander Body. This paperpresents the results of several full-scale tests and discusses the incorporation of the test results indesign and construction.1 GEOLOGY OF THE REGIONSanta Cruz de la Sierra is located in the eastern lowlands and sub-Andean zone of Bolivia, SouthAmerica. The area lies at an elevation of about +400 m and the geology is a Paleozoic (250 millionyears old) sedimentary basin. The soils of interest to civil engineering construction are quaternarywith the dominant minerals being calcite, silica and feldspar. The main agent is the Piray River and itstributaries. Their past meandering over the area has resulted in a sedimentation-erosionsedimentationprocess and a profile dominated by fine to medium sands with intermittent layers ofclay or clayey sand. With increasing distance from the river, the clay-containing layers are thicker.Fig.1.- View of Bolivia with location of Santa Cruz and map of Santa CruzThe upper about 15 to 18 m thick part of the profile consists of normally consolidated layers of clays,silts, sands, in various combination and thickness. Below, the soil is more homogeneous and consistsmostly of sand and gravel. The groundwater table lies typically at a depth of about 6 m in the highestpart of the city and at about 1 to 3 m depth in the lowest part of the city."

In mining the method of statistical tests is used by solving of problems, exposing to influence of random factors. Such problems are: rational selection of equipment set; co-ordination in time of different processes; interaction between some processes and kinds of works. Usually it is considered that Monte Carlo method proves its value in the first place in that problems, which allow theoretical-probabilistic description. Analysis of numerical solution of mining-economic problems shows that the method of statistical tests may be used successfully by solving of determinate problems, which are solved usually analytically or by the methods of mathematical programming. We are talking about the problems of optimal use of resources, expedient placing of equipment, effective use of investments, rational planning of stripping and extracting works, groups of mining enterprises and about different variants of transport problem. In the report possibility of the method use is studied at an example of typical technical-economic problems solving. By solving of these problems the variant of the method with uniform distribution of random quantity had been applied and built-in random number generator of visual modelling system VisSim had been used. By algorithms elaboration it seems very perspective to use combination of the Monte Carlo method with traditional methods of numerical solving of the problems (methods of linear, nonlinear and dynamic programming and so on). The vapor pressures of tungsten (VI ) chloride ( WC1 ) and hafnium ( IV ) iodide ( HFI ) were measured by a metal diaphragm technique . Vapor pressure values were obtained to permit calculation of the thermodynamic properties of the vaporization processes of the compounds . The vapor pressure data of WC16 are represented by the following equations for the liquid , B - solid , and a- solid over the temperature intervals indicated : - log P = 8.194 3,253 /T Liquid , 281.5 ° to 325 ° C : B - solid 230.0 ° to 281.5 ° C : log P a - solid 185.0 ° to 230.0 ° C : log Pam *** = 8.794 - 3,588 / T = 9.615 - 3,996 /T where T is the absolute temperature in degrees Kelvin . The heats of vaporization and sublimation are 14.9 , 16.4 , and 18.3 kcal / g mole , respectively . The entropy of vaporization at the normal boiling point , 330 ° C , was 24.3 eu . The fusion temperature , 281.5 ° C , and transition temperatures , 230.0 ° and 185 ° C , were found by thermal analysis .

The early history of the mine is traced from the beginning of shaft sinking in 1886 to the purchase by the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. in 1949. A necessary preliminary to mechanisation of the Borehole Seam was development of the Young Wallsend seam, andthis development is described. Surface reorganisation and coal handling arrangements are dealt with in detail. Then follows a description of the Borehole Seam mechanisation, the provision of power supply for this purpose, arid pumping arrangements in themine.INTRODUCTIONStockton Borehole Colliery is in the Parish of Teralba, between the townships of Teralba and Boolaroo, and about 12 miles from Newcastle. The colliery holding, a freehofd area of 2,560 acres, was apparently an original land grant when acquired by Teralba Co-operative Coal Company who decided to mine for coal and named the mine "Teralba Colliery." Shaft sinking was commenced in 1886 but was delayed by financial and water troubles to such an extent that it was not until 1901 that the Borehole Seam was reached.Coal was won until 1904 using a single 16 ft. diameter shaft, ventilation being achieved by means of a wooden boxing down one side of the shaft. This collapsed, and operations ceased until the mine was taken over in 1906 by a company known as "Borehole Colliery Limited," the principal stockholder being the Stockton Coal Company. It renamed the mine "Borehole Colliery." This new company immediately commenced sinking a 13 ft. diameter air shaft. In 1908 the Stocktol1 Colliery at Stockton was abandoned, and during the following year much of its equipment was transferred to Borehole Colliery. Dawsonite-bearing oil shale of Colorado's Green River formation offers a unique and vast (more than 5.9 Gt of A120 j) resource of easily extractable alumina. The processing methods required by the thermal reactions of dawsonite and its oil-shale carrier also require production of shale oil, soda ash, and nahcolite as marketable coproducts. These production methods are presented. The alumina production process is contrasted with the Bayer process to describe technical advantages of extraction of alumina from oil shale which may offset the problems associated with processing a relatively lean ore. While alumina production from oil shale requires development of new technology, the technical problems appear solvable. Only the political problems arising from the now onerous and completely unnecessary federal oil-shale withdrawal appear less solvable.

"A significant variation of strength was noted in silicon nitride ceramics made through the powder compaction processing with minor processing changes. The relevance of the fracture strength to the microstructure was examined in these ceramics. In the examination of microstructure, the ceramics were made into thinned specimens, and their internal structures were observed with an optical microscope in the transmission mode. This technique can distinguish a difference in microstructure associated with the minor processing changes. The strength of all ceramics examined in this experiment was qualitatively correlated with the -pore size distribution in the specimens. Clearly, the elimination of these detrimental defects will enhance the reliability of ceramics.IntroductionIn ceramics made through powder processing, a variation of properties is often encountered [l ,2]. This brings a major problem on producing reliable and cost-effective ceramics. The variation is often ascribed to the changes in the characteristics of defects. However, there is no clear evidence f\)r this explanation due to the lack of an adequate tool for identifying the defects determining the properties. Details of the origin of the variation have still been poorly understood.A new technique is very promising for clarifying the origin of the variation [3,4]. This has very high potential in detecting minor differences in structure for .engineering ceramics. With this technique, ceramics are made transparent with its thinning down to about 50 µ m and their internal structures are observed with various types of optical microscopes in the transmission mode. The characteristics of the defects determined through this approach were found to be directly related to the strength of the ceramics [4-6].The objective of this study is to clarify the ongm of fracture strength of silicon nitride ceramics. This material is representative of high performance ceramics, and the origin is of great practical interest. For this study, silicon nitride ceramics with minor changes in processing condition were prepared. Specific feature focused in this study is the difference of large pore structure determined with the new technique and its relevance to the strength of the silicon nitride ceramics."

THE mineral trona was discovered on Government land in 1938, about 18 miles west of the town of Green River, Wyo., in the core of the John Hay, Jr., well, a test well drilled for oil by the Mountain Fuel Supply Co. in sec. 2, T. 18 N., R. 110 W., sixth principal meridian. Although no oil or gas was reported, the drilling led to a discovery of great potential economic importance and exceptional scientific interest. Trona is a relatively rare mineral found at various places in playa deposits but not previously found at any great depth. It is composed of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate (Na2CO3.NaHCO3.2H20). Pure trona contains the equivalent of 70.35 per cent of sodium carbonate. Total sodium computed to carbonate times 1.42 equals the percentage of trona in the absence of other sodium carbonate minerals in the sample. ANALYSES Two short pieces of core sent to the author a few days after the completion of the Hay well were analyzed by R. C. Wells[t] and found to be exceptionally pure trona. A brief article on this discovery has already been published.1 Arrangements were then made through W. T. Nightengale[$] for the author to inspect and sample the core. The company log of the well included notations of sodium salt crystals from a depth of 1190 to 1820 ft. Not being able to identify all the minerals present, the author selected several specimens of the core for petrographic examinations and sampled the sections of trona for analysis. J. J. Fahey, of the Geological Survey, examined the specimens and reported most of the crystals to be a new anhydrous sodium carbonate and calcium carbonate mineral (Na2CO3.2CaCO3), which he named shortite,2 after Maxwell N. Short.* He analyzed the samples of trona, with the results shown in Table I. [ ] In addition to the 10 ft. I in. of trona in the first section, it is reasonable to assume that the 9 ft. 8 in. for which no core was available for sampling is either mostly trona or some other soluble salt, but it should not be included in calculating reserves. In the part of the core between 1590 ft. 3 in. and I600 ft. 4 in. the material insoluble in cold water, amounting to about 5 per cent, was estimated petrographically to contain 70 per cent clay, 25 per cent shortite, and 5 per cent pyrite. The primary purpose of the Prototype Installation Facility (PIF) for the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) in this conceptual design was to test the magnets and other physics equipment. PIF was located in the northwest quadrant of the SSC 54 mile (87 km) main ring and consists of the first segment of tunnels, approximately 17,060 lineal feet (5.2 km) of 12 foot inner-diameter (ID) (3.7 m) tunnel, three 250 ± foot (60 m) deep shafts, connecting tunnels, and associated niches and alcoves. PIF would be the first portion of the main ring collider tunnel to be constructed. The geology, underground excavation conditions, underground facilities, and contractual considerations are discussed.
