"Similar to the ethanol program, initiated more than 30 years ago, the recently created biodiesel program in Brazil is expected to rely on private initiative based on agribusiness for vegetable oil production. Campos dos Goytacazes is a large county in the northern of the state of Rio de Janeiro with land still available for oily vegetables plantation in addition to the land traditionally occupied by sugar cane plantation, which is used to produce ethanol. In order to extend the biodiesel program to Campos dos Goytacazes, the State University of Northern Rio de Janeiro (UENF) is conducting a technical project for the development of the infrastructure for biodiesel production. In this work, the infrastructure based on versatile equipment for biodiesel esterification built in the Center for Alternative Energy of the UENF is presented.IntroductionBiofuels are gaining worldwide attention as a possible economical solution for the prediction of declining reserves of petroleum and related increase in price of barrel. However, nowadays, a more relevant question is the climate changes caused by burning fossil fuels. This is especially the case of coal and petroleum based fuels, mainly gasoline and diesel that propel the majority of vehicles and generate a large amount of CO2 emissions responsible for global warming. This combination of economical an environmental problems is already providing a strong motivation to substitute conventional fossil fuels by renewable biofuels. More than just the interest of the market financial forces, government legislation is imposing a new order that obliges the use of biofuel. Many countries including the USA, the European Community, Japan and Brazil are committed to gradually substitute biofuels into their fleet of vehicles."

Norddeutsche Affinerie is the largest copper producer in Europe. Two sites are in operation for the production of refined copper: primary copper production is located in Hamburg and secondary copper production in Lünen. A total of just under 560,000 tonnes of copper cathodes is produced annually at the two sites. Primary copper production using the flash smelter furnace has been in operation in Hamburg since 1972. Over the years, the capacity of the flash smelter has been increased in three expansion projects from 120,000 t to almost 500,000 t of anode copper p.a. The anode sector consisting of two anode furnaces and a 24 mould casting wheel still features just about the same equipment as in 1972. The paper describes the most important steps taken to optimise operation which have put NA in a position to cast meanwhile more than 500,000 t of anode copper annually with the two anode furnaces and 24 mould anode casting wheel.

The eddy current separator (ECS) is designed to separate nonmagnetic (nonferrous) electrically conducting (metallic) particles from nonconductive residue. Nonferrous metallic particles are repelled out of the material stream passing over the eddy current rotor (ECR). The rotor is housed in a fiberglass composite outer shell that serves as a conveyor head pulley. This results in the desired metaVnonmeta1 separation. The behavior of ferromagnetic particles, mainly iron and iron oxide (i.e. rust), is quite different. These particles are strongly attracted to the magnets and the smaller particles tend to align their long axis in the direction of the magnetic flux. Since the direction of the flux changes with the passage of each magnet pole, the small particles spin at very high rates causing wear of the belt and of the composite outer shell housing the ECR. Large particles, when trapped under the ECS belt, cannot spin, but can be heated by the eddy current effects and subsequently can burn through the composite outer shell. We discuss the practical implication of this behavior of iron and rust on the design, performance and maintenance of eddy current separators.

This paper presents a mathematical model for the oxide copper ore heap leaching process. The data used in the model include physical-chemical, .geometrical and operational data, as: leachable metals ore contents, .flow rate and acid concentration, parameters of passivity, ore size distribution, the average residence time of the solution in the heap, height, irrigated area and weight of ore in the heap. In this model the heap is divided into horizontal and plane layers of constant area. The flow of the liquid in the heap is considered unidirectional and the solid-fluid reaction model is considered under diffusive control. The average residence time of the solution into the heap and the apparent effective diffusivity of the acid through the ore particles have .a significant influence on the rate of the copper extraction and its concentration in the pregnant solution; therefore these parameters are used in the model calibration. When this algorithm was applied to a laboratory test, the results showed that the model is adequate to predict the process performance.

The use of gas purging plugs in the copper industry is a widely used practice. They provide substantial improvements especially in anode refining furnaces, where savings in process time and energy are obtained as well as refractory wear and buildups inside the furnace are minimized. The newly developed system, enables purging plugs to be implemented in both stationary and tilting furnaces, is in operation in vessels on three continents. An additional advantage in these furnaces above all other benefits is the significantly improved melting rate. This innovative and patented gas purging system consists of a purging plug cooling device and a slidable, cooled piping system. It provides compensation for any thermal expansion in the furnace lining and minimizes the risk of undesirable copper infiltration. User experiences and results of this widely used system are reported in this paper.

The main operation of obtaining zinc from sulfide raw materials by hydrometallurgical technologies is the oxidation roasting of zinc concentrates in fluidized bed furnaces. The technical-economic parameters are determined by the parameters of the roasting process, which depend on the composition of the initial raw materials, the temperature of the bed and on other factors. The predetermined roasting temperature is maintained due to the change of specific efficiency as well as to the quantity of the heat removed from the bed. The efficiency of caissons depends at a high degree on the composition and the thickness of the accretion formed on the surface of the caissons. Forecasting the roasting results is impossible unless we know the mechanism of the accretion formation. The aim of the present paper is the thermodynamic analyses of the behavior of the charge compositions under roasting and the determination of the potential mechanism of the accretion formation. The thermodynamic analyses show that under conditions of the oxidation roasting the thermodynamic probability of the formation of zinc sulfate is higher than the probability of the oxide formation until a temperature of873 OK is reached. The thermodynamic probability of the formation of the lead sulfate is higher than the probability of oxide formation in the entire temperature range of roasting. The probability of formation of ferrites and silicates of zinc decreases only insignificantly the sulfate stability. The results of the investigation of the accretions composItion formed under roasting of concentrates with particle sizes less than 0.02 J..lm (60%), containing 65% of sphalerite (ZnS), 12% of pyrite and chalcopyrite (FeS2 and CufeSz) each, 3% of galenite (PbS), 7% of silica and other non-ore minerals, have shown that the composition of accretion varies depending on the depth of the accretion layer. The accretions on the caissons and the thermo-siphons consist mostly of zinc sulfate (more than 50%). The accretions of forehamber consist mostly of zinc oxide. They also contain ferrites and silicates. The formation of the sulfate zinc accretion in the cold parts of the fluidized bed furnace (the caissons and thermo-siphons) may be explained by a lower temperature on the surface and probably by a catalytic influence of the present oxides in the formation of S02 and sulfates. The nature of the structure of the accretion in the hotter parts of the furnace may supposedly be explained by the formation of elemental vaporous zinc during roasting.

Electrodialysis (ED), i.e. a technique based on the effects of electrically charged membranes on ions in solution in an electric field, has been applied to Cu-Fe-As-Sb- H2SO4 electrolytes similar to those used in copper electrorefining and electrowinning operations. The effects of current density, time and species concentration have been studied in a batch ED cell. The technique has shown to be effective in concentrating and separating a range of ions and points to possible new methods of treating copper electrometallurgy effluents.

New environmental assessment model based on the Waste Input-Output analysis has been developed and applied for the "Landfill mining activity". "Landfill mining" implies the digging up of the landfilled wastes, the recovery of valuable material and energy resources and, thus, the reuse of the saved space as a new landfill site. In this study, the landfilled wastes are assumed to be treated by the gasification/melting processes. Two kinds of reactors, the fluidized bed type (FB) and the shaft furnace type (SF), have been considered in this work as the typical gasification/melting processes adopted in Japan. In FB, the dug-up wastes are heated in the sand fluidized bed zone under reducing atmosphere, Fe and Al are recovered in the metallic form, and then, the gasification/melting of residues is made in the second zone. In SF, the waste is charged in the high temperature coke bed, and the gas is recovered together with molten metal and slag. Both processes generate electric power by the recovered heat and fly ash as waste to landfill. It has been found in this study that the both processes can reduce the total volume of waste and save the available landfill space. SF seems to have higher potential for decreasing volume of wastes because of less emission than FB while FB has great benefit to recover metallic Fe and Al individually. The results of scenario analysis have also indicated that the landfill mining activity is effective for sustainable management of landfill sites.

The falling real price level of copper metal and changes in the treatment and refining charges has been characteristic to the copper industry during the last few decades. Outokumpu's continuous development of the Flash Smelting Technology and increased productivity of the smelters based on these improvements may be one of the basic reasons that have influenced to these trends. From the early beginning of the Flash Smelting Technology, it has been characterized by low operation costs and low emissions, and the vision has been to develop the technology towards Direct Blister Flash Smelting. In Direct Blister Flash Smelting, both smelting and converting are carried out in one furnace making it possible to reduce the number of unit operation steps and thus lower both operation and investment costs. The merger of large copper production companies taken place during the last few years is a sign of a new age in copper production business. Now, the aim is to increase the productivity of copper production not just by utilizing the economy of scale but also by increasing integration and optimization of the whole production chain from mine to refinery. This also means increasing win- win based cooperation between companies. A Production Network concept based on the Flash Converting process enables existing smelters to decrease the operating costs and expand the smelting capacity with minimum investment and at the same time to decrease the emissions of the smelters. The new structure in ownership and partnership between copper production companies makes it easier to adopt the Production Network concept to both new and existing plants, where there exists a lot of built-in capacity. The paper presents Outokumpu's prediction on how the new options for the smelters will contribute to further changes in the structure of copper production. These visions are illustrated by giving examples on how the combination of matte production, Flash Converting, and Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting could be adapted in existing and new smelters.

The distributions of impurities in the copper melt, the slag and the gas phase in copper flash smelting process were under study in the Guixi smelter, particularly during operating conditions of high oxygen enrichment with production of high grade matte. Several methods for the removal of impurities such as As, Sb and Bi in the copper smelting process were developed and implemented at the Guixi smelter. This paper described the effects of high oxygen enrichment, elevated matte grade, high temperature and high production rate on the distribution of impurities, methods adopted at the smelter for the removal of impurities, and the associated benefits in the utilization of these removal techniques which include the mathematical model for material blending, high thermal intensity operation at the flash furnace, extended converter blowing, and injection of slag modifiers consisting of Na2CO3 and CaO powder mixture to the converters and anode furnaces.

Since more than 15 years the Waelz process at "Berzelius" in Duisburg has proved suitable for reprocessing the zinc and lead containing dust and .sludge which inevitably occur in making steel in EAF-plants. The produced Waelz-oxide is agglomerated in a hot-briquetting plant and charged to an Imperial Smelting Shaft Furnace to recover the valuable elements in form of metallic zinc and lead. In view of the actual importance of the dumping problems of the EAF wastes a description of the "Berzelius" treatment route is given but also the situation in Western Europe is illustrated. Dust from stainless steel production is successfully treated in the Scan Dust Plasma Process in order to recycle Chromium and Nickel, while the resulting Zinc-Dust is treated via the Waelz-ISF-Route. For treatment of low Zinc-containing dust, sludge and fines from integrated steelworks, pilot scale tests have been carried out successfully in the Circulating Fluid Bed in order to recover metalized iron and .zinc/lead fume. A 30,000 tpy Demonstration Plant is planned?.

Several organic and inorganic substances are widely used to control deposit structure and morphology during the electroprocessing of copper. Methods for monitoring the levels of thiourea, glue and guar gum during electrorefining and electrowinning have been successfully developed under the trade names of Reatrol and CollaMat. Other instrumental methods have been developed for additives and decomposition products associated with the electroplating of copper and other metals. Generally, these methods have been found to be either insufficiently sensitive or lacking in the desired selectivity for some or all of the additives. These procedures have mostly employed DC techniques; i.e., cyclic voltammetry, Tafel analysis, etc. In this work, chronopotentiometry (CP) and AC voltammetry were used to examine the interaction of glue, guar gum, thiourea and chloride during the electroplating of copper onto a platinum electrode. In addition, the interactions between the additives have been explored. It was found that glue in pure electrolyte (H2S04 and CuS04 only) had no effect on the chronopotentiogram. Glue was only active if chloride ions were present. The addition of thiourea resulted in several different chronopotentiograms depending on the presence of either chloride or chloride and glue. Thiourea used in conjunction with glue and chloride showed a significant increase in the polarization during copper deposition when compared to the electrolyte containing only glue and chloride. The use of a modified channel electrode further increased the sensitivity of CP. The use of AC voltammetry was explored as a technique to monitor some of the additives. AC voltammograms have more spectral detail then their DC counterparts and it is possible to monitor some of the additives at very low concentrations with AC techniques.

In the Kokkola zinc smelter, as in most other zinc roasting plants, there is now a trend towards using concentrates with an increasing impurity content. This also often means that the size distribution of the concentrates gets finer. Iron is present in sulfidic zinc concentrates with the highest percentage as a single impurity. The behavior of iron in zinc roasting was studied in laboratory experiments. Commercial zinc concentrates with a low and high (1.5 - 16 wt-%) iron content as pyrite or in the sphalerite lattice were oxidized to various degrees to establish the reaction mechanisms of iron in roasting. Microscopy studies were carried out on the calcine, and the findings were presented in numerous photographs of the polished cross sections. SEM/EDS techniques were used for analyzing the phases and particle morphologies present in the samples. An oxidation mechanism of zinc concentrates with a high iron content was suggested.

A hydroelectrochemical technology has been proposed and experimentally proven for processing metallic gold- and silver-containing concentrates on the basis of copper and copper alloys obtained as a result of preliminary physico-mechanical upgrading of electronic scrap. The proposed technology is based on hydroelectrochemical leaching of scrap using reversible electric current and diluted nitric acid solutions, containing complexing agents, permitting complete separation of gold from the nonferrous matrix without involving gold in the process, and dissolving copper, zinc, lead and tin virtually without any emission of nitrose gases.

This symposium is dedicated to the lifetime achievements of Professor H.Y. Sohn. It covers the scientific fields, processing routes and investigation techniques in which Prof. Sohn has worked during his career and is based in the equally important three topical areas: Principles, Technologies, and Industrial practice. Professor Sohn was General Chair of the very first TMS Fall Extraction and Processing Symposium in 1983 in San Francisco which led to the Annual such symposia as this International symposium. Furthermore, the theme of that symposium was sulfide smelting, which is also included in this symposium. [ ] Professor Sohn was born in a beautiful dynastic capital Kaesung, Korea on August 21, 1941. He received his B.S. degree in 1962 from Seoul National University, M.Sc. in 1966 from the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, N.B., Canada, and his Ph.D. degree in 1970 from theUniversity of California at Berkeley all in Chemical Engineering. After working as a Research Associate at the State University of New York at Buffalo and as a Research Engineer at Du Pont?s Engineering Technology Laboratory, Dr. Sohn joined the Department of Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Utah in 1974 and currently holds the ranks of Professor of Metallurgical Engineering and Adjunct Professor of Chemical Engineering.

Mexicana de Cobre, which is part of Grupo Mexico, carried out studies for the construction of a copper refinery in the La Caridad Metallurgical Complex located in Nacozari, in the state of Sonora, Mexico. After the studies were concluded, the decision was made to construct a 180,000 t/y refinery using the state of the art permanent cathode Kidd Process. The basic engineering was developed by Fluor Daniel and the detail engineering and the construction were carried out in record time by the Mexican company Bufete Industrial. During the construction phase, Grupo Mexico decided to expand the refinery, and actions were taken to increase its capacity by an additional 120,000 t/y; the final result was a refinery capable of producing 300,000 tonnes of grade A cathode per year. Construction began in January 1996, and the operation of the first stage began on July 1, 1997. The operation of the second stage commenced on January 7, 1998. The capacity of the first stage was reached in November, 1997 and the total capacity of the refinery was achieved in May, 1998. This presentation describes the process and equipment installed in the refinery, the steps leading to the start-up, the operation and the results obtained during the first two years, the handling of anodes with high impurity contents, and the problems confronted and the way they have been solved. It also includes personnel productivity, the control parameters and the most relevant data on the operation of the process.

Gypsum fouling is a common problem in the hydrometallurgical industry. It is a particular problem in free sulphuric acid neutralization, or iron removal operations where sulphates are removed from aqueous solutions by the addition of calcium-containing bases. Previous work revealed a strong correlation between the degree of gypsum supersaturation in the reactor and the rate of scale growth indicating that scale formation and growth are primarily controlled by chemical phenomena. However, the chemical behaviour of gypsum is variable and unpredictable with solution chemistry and temperature. Many of the "rules of thumb" that are used to predict its behaviour (and avoid fouling) are in fact based on gypsum solubility in water, rather than on real mixed metal sulphate systems. However, despite this unconventional solubility behaviour, we have been able to accurately model it in Ni, Mg, and Zn containing solutions over a wide range of temperature (25°C-90°C) and solution concentration (0-6 m) using the OLI simulation software. Furthermore, by studying fouling rates in a simulated continuous neutralization reactor, the relationship between process conditions and fouling rates were explained for the first time. This has led to an understanding of how techniques for minimizing gypsum fouling work.

Each year, about five (5) million ton of shredder residues are landfilled in the United States. ·Similar quantities are landfilled in Europe and the Pacific Rim. Landfilling of these residues results in a cost to the existing recycling industry and also represents a loss of material resources that are otherwise recyclable. In this paper, we outline the resources recoverable from typical shredder residues and describe technology that we have developed to recover these resources.

While calcium ferrite slags have been successfully used in continuous copper converting for the last 30 years, ferrous calcium silicate slag was proposed about 8 years ago as an additional alternative for copper smelting. Although both slags are normal extensions of each other their phase relations have not been completely clarified. In this paper the liquidus relations of both slags have been quantified at various areas that cover both of them. The existing experimental data have been first reviewed and discussed in relation to the solidification procedure. An original physical model is then used to predict various diagrams of the liquidus surface of both slags. It is shown that the ternary liquidus diagrams normally used for FeOx-SiO2-CaO system are not suitable for industrial slags. The new model diagrams of Fe/CaO versus SiO2 and Fe/SiO2 versus CaO as well as Fe/CaO versus Temperature and Fe/SiO2 versus temperature are proven to be much more convenient for ferrite and ferrous calcium silicate slags. Based on these diagrams the effect of SiO2 and CaO on the melting temperature is quantified. The effect of Cu2O is also quantified through the model. Some Fe/CaO versus Cu2O and Fe/SiO2versus CaO at various copper contents are predicted and the results show good agreement with the experimental data. It is also shown that in the presence of liquid copper, Cu2O is dissolved in the slag depending on the oxidation degree of the system and might lower the liquidus temperature. Some discussions are also presented taking into account plant observations and important conclusions are drawn for copper smelting and converting

"Numerical simulations of macrosegregation formation during horizontal solidification of a hypoeutectic Sn-Pb alloy in a rectangular cavity is presented and compared to experimental results. The experiment involves a melting phase, a holding stage at constant temperature with/without application of electromagnetic stirring, and finally solidification. We simulate all stages of the experiment and study the segregation of Pb throughout the experiment. A twophase volume averaged model is used for the numerical simulations, accounting for thermosolutal convection and assuming perfect microscopic mixing (lever rule). The influence of the melting phase and the electromagnetic stirring is studied with different cases to illustrate the consequences on the flow pattern and Pb segregation. The numerical simulations are compared to the experimental data and the impact of chemical inhomogeneities prior to solidification on macrosegregation formation is discussed.IntroductionMany extensive investigations have been performed so far on the solidification of metallic alloys. However, the melting process of metallic alloy has not attracted attention in a same manner. Nevertheless, melting of alloy may put forth peculiar effects as described in the present paper. It has been observed from a benchmark experiment [1, 2] that significant stratification might arise during the melting process of Sn-Pb alloy. That effect was put forth thanks to the analysis of the experimental temperature distribution which indicated that the convective fluid flow was almost zero. The effect was enhanced when the lead composition was higher (above 6wt.%). The present paper is aimed at confirming that the melting of an alloy containing a heavier solute may be accompanied with a stratification of the solute which exerts a stabilizing effect on the convective fluid flow. Results obtained from numerical modeling are compared with experimental data obtained from the benchmark facility."
