Our aim in this project was to develop a new copper refining technology utilizing pyrometallurgical treatment and a raw materials preparation technique. In the recycling process; raw material is not an idealized concentrate of copper sulfide but is composed of various types of scrap, industrial wastes such as sludge, ash and slag, and municipal wastes. Since we cannot expect oxidation heat in this process as in sulfide smelting, organic materials are viewed as an alternative energy source. Quality of the copper produced is targeted as 99.99% and an intermediate grade will also be marketable. To benefit the plant, rare metals and other nonferrous metals will also be recovered The overall system is described in this paper, specific topics outlined and preliminary research presented. Current Japanese technology for recycling copper based materials is briefly reviewed.

The effect of the anodic polarization on the composition and morphology of the surface layer formed on chalcopyrite during ammonia–ammonium chloride leaching was investigated. The anodic polarization on the chalcopyrite electrode was used for oxidation and dissolution of chalcopyrite, and the resulting oxidized layers were characterized by XPS, SEM and optical microscopy. The results show that oxide layers exist on the chalcopyrite surface with or without any anodic polarization in the leaching solution at ambient atmosphere. However, the composition and morphology of the layers are strongly depended on the extent of polarization. The distribution of FeOOH and Fe2O3 within the oxidized layer was inhomogeneous for the sample at the open circuit potential (OCP). The composition and morphology of the oxidized layers which were formed at anodic potentials lower than 0.3 V versus SCE were similar to those of the chalcopyrite at the OCP. At anodic potentials above 0.4 V, the oxidized layers contained many cracks, and they were fragile and exfoliated. Furthermore, the sulfide had been oxidized to sulfur species with higher oxidation states. The oxidation of the chalcopyrite seemed to undergo a cyclically oxidative process that suggested growth and spallation of oxidation layers on chalcopyrite in a layer-by-layer sequence.

The new technological process developed is by means of thermal plasma arc smelting to obtain high grade Ni matte directly from Ni-Cu concentrates containing 6-7% nickel and 3-8% sulfur. In comparising with conventional smelting and converting processes the plasma arc smelting process has many advantages over conventional processes, such as lower energy consumption, lower capital investment and free from SO, pollution by transforming the sulfides into elemental sulfur with microwave irradiation under controlled oxygen potential, moreover, the process is simple and easily controlled due to less magnetite troubles in the operation. Therefore, this new technological process can be used as an alternative way to conventional process for Ni-Cu concentrate smelting. The main economical technical index is summarized in Tabal 1. The gun-sprayed refractory lining of electrothermal furnaces used for the manufacture of carbon disulphide from liquid sulphur and charcoal at between 800 and l000°C are severely attacked during the process. A mineralogical study of samples of eroded refractory material disclosed that carbon disulphide had penetrated the lining, causing the precipitation of sulphides and carbon, and the decomposition of mullite, a major constituent of the lining, to corundum and amorphous silica. Calcium, iron, titanium, and chromium are undesirable cations in a refractory that is used in furnaces for the production of carbon disulphide, since they react readily with this substance. A series of tests, in which samples were exposed to different amounts of carbon disulphide for various residence times and at different temperatures, was carried out with eight types of aluminosilicate-based castable and brick refractory materials, to compare their resistance to attack by carbon disulphide. Mineralogical investigation of the test cores showed that castable refractory materials are unsuitable for this type of process because of the presence of calcium aluminates and other impurities in the cement. Of all the refractories that were tested, a mullite brick of low porosity, containing a minimum amount of impurities, appeared to be the most suitable for use in this type of operation.

This paper analyses the scope and instruments employed by the Basel Convention for regulating the transboundary movement of hazardous wastes, the present and projected hazardous waste regulations of Chile, reviews the Chilean import/export trade of wastes of the period 1985-1995, and discusses, the influence that the Basel Convention has had on mining trade, its perceived benefits and costs, and possible effects on Chile's trade of the application of the Convention's Decision III/l. There is no quantitative estimation as to the effect of the Convention on the general volume of imported or exported materials destined for recovery, recycling, reclamation, or reuse. All recycling imports, with the possible exception of residues of petroleum oil, which occurred during the decade 1985-1995, can be classified tentatively as non hazardous. The entry into force of the Convention has had several effects on Chile's trade. It has brought home the need to have a comprehensive hazardous waste legislation, it has been a base for applying import restrictions, which in all likelihood, would .have otherwise not been applied, The benefits and costs of this import restriction, as well as those of the multilateral export ban are analyzed.

By the term sorting one understands the separation of a material mixture into two or several products according to different material characteristics in the preparation technology. The oldest sorting procedure, the handpicking, is less and less used to separate different material mixtures because of the considerable personnel expenditure and the strict hygienic regulations at the workplaces in Europe. In general, the manual assortment is able to solve separation tasks, which could not be solved by machines so far. The picking is one of the most selective processing methods. However, the progress in the computer and sensor engineering today makes the creation of automatic picking devices possible, whose efficiency goes far beyond the possibilities of handpicking. Therefore in the future automatic picking will not only be applied to already common applications like the waste glass assortment by colour, but also to the assortment of complex composed material mixtures e.g. old shreddered cars. Thus, the automatic picking, supported by high performance computer systems and new sensor technology, gains more and more significance within many applications of waste processing. However, in order to apply automatic sorting procedures for different material streams within recycling processes, a substantial research and development need still is existing. The desire of the users is to sort more extensively in order to achieve products with bigger material varieties, In addition, the requirement of the accuracy of recognizing and sorting out of single grains rises, This lecture illustrates the procedure of the hand picking before it was employed in waste processing. Thus, a renaissance of a long forgotten method is happening in terms of today's state of the art procedure "automatic picking". Possible technologies, fields of application and future potentials of this technology are pointed out.

Small and medium-sized flotation plants with no assaying instrumentation still depend much upon the art of the operator to produce acceptable and consistent results. Improved performance can be accomplished by the use of the simple microscope set up as a control device. The visual recognition of products in the circuit does much to eliminate uncertain shift operating decisions and is an easy technique to acquire. Mineral staining methods further assist in the determination of components within the mill products. Simple mounting upon scotch tape and other adhesives is rapid and convenient. The microscope also has a practical role for the plant metallurgist or laboratory technician when evaluating middling products, and their routing within the circuit. Examples are reviewed where the microscope has been used for operational control in both sulfide and nonmetallic mineral flotation plants.

During the twentieth century, the copper smelting industry achieved dramatic expansion corresponding to the vast growth of global economy. This was largely due to innovations in pyro-metallurgical processes, such as autogenous smelting and continuous smelting and converting technologies. However, as copper production capacity increased, its impact on the environment also could not be ignored, and thus with increasing global environmental awareness, many smelting operations either had to renew or rebuild their facilities. In addition to these changes, in places like Japan and Europe, with scarce primary resources, the treatment and recovery of metals from a variety of items such as car shredder dust, used electrical appliances and electronic devices, on top of scraps traditionally treated, is having a profound effect on the reduction of waste and the preservation of primary resources. Thus compared to the days when copper smelting focused on the environmental control in order to break with "Smoke Stack Industry", copper smelting today is making an important contribution to the sustainable development of human society.

As part of its research programs, the Bureau of Mines is investigating the partitioning of complex sulfide minerals to simpler sulfide phases by sulfidation reactions. Partitioning in this manner can afford opportunity to improve selective extraction of mineral constituents of value. This report describes research involving the sulfidation partitioning of the mineral pentlandite, which is an important source of Ni in primary production. For the laboratory studies, the pentlandite was synthesized in nominally equiatomic proportions of Ni and Fe. Elemental Ni, Fe, and S powders were blended, compacted, and sealed under reduced He pressure in vitreous silica tubes. The tubes were heated under controlled conditions at SOD? C for 24 h. The product was verified by X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis to consist essentially of (Ni,Fe)9S8. Small samples of the (Ni,Fe) S were encapsulated with sulfur in silica tubes at reduced He pressures and heated for 1 to 24 h at specific temperatures between 400? and 600? C, both below and above the boiling point of sulfur (_445° Cl. Reaction rate increased with temperature. Within this temperature range, partitioning to individual Ni and Fe disu1fides proceeded to essential completion according to the reaction

"High speed compressible jets are used in a number of steel-making applications. In the case of the BOF, a compressible oxygen jet reacts with a carbon-rich iron bath to reduce carbon levels and produce steel. The intensity of the process is governed by the speed of the jet and by the size and shape of the depression created in the metal and slag by the force of the jet, i.e. by the corresponding free surface. This is a difficult CFD problem, since there are compressible and incompressible regions in the flow domain, which need to be handled differently in a finite-volume (FV) pressure-correction scheme. Also, standard turbulence models do not account for compressibility, or the large difference in density between the cold oxygen jet and the hot reacting surroundings. Corrections are introduced to the k-E model to remedy this deficiency and the results are validated against experimental data. The compressible/incompressible boundary is handled through a transition region, based on Mach number.IntroductionThe deformation of a free surface by a compressible high speed jet is of paramount engineering interest, particularly for understanding the physical processes within a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF). In a BOF, a supersonic oxygen jet impinges on a molten iron surface, thereby creating a cavity. Oxygen penetrates the bath and removes carbon, resulting in low carbon steel [1].The challenges in modelling such a process lie in coupling a solution domain with distinct compressible and incompressible regions and in dealing with large density differences between the modelled gas and liquid. The modelling of compressibility within the jet is crucial, since the correct velocity profile in the jet is required to determine the cavity depth with accuracy."

Recovery of gold from thiosulfate leachates can be accomplished by adsorption of the gold thiosulfate complex by a strong base resin. Two of the most significant impurities that can decrease this gold adsorption are tetrathionate and trithionate, which are produced as oxidation products of thiosulfate during gold leaching. This paper investigates gold adsorption on a strong base resin (Purolite A500C) as a function of the concentration of these impurities. It is shown that concentrations of tetrathionate and trithionate as low as 150 mg/L can decrease gold loading by an order of magnitude, and that of the two ions, tetrathionate has a stronger detrimental effect. The resin and solution gold concentration profiles were successfully fit using a Freundlich isotherm, which further shows the strong effect of tetrathionate. To counteract the decrease in gold adsorption by tetrathionate, a novel process was proposed. Sulfite was added to the solution to oxidize tetrathionate to trithionate, and a nitrogen blanket was added to ensure that no further oxidation of thiosulfate could take place. It is shown that by incorporating this process, gold adsorption was doubled from both synthetic and real gold thiosulfate leachates.

"Numerical models are developed to represent complex electromagnetic, free surface deformation and fluid flow phenomena in floating zone refining processes with radio frequency inductive heating. The computational methodology is based on the coupled finite/boundary element method for the electromagnetic field distribution and the Galerkin finite element method for magnetically driven fluid flow and free surface profiles of the molten zone. With the models, the complex transport and free surface phenomena in a floating zone system can be studied as a function of various operating conditions including applied current, frequency, inductor position and shape, surface tension, floating zone diameter and height. Results show that the equilibrium shape is sensitive to the height of the molten zone and that the free surface shapes can have a significant effect on the melt flow in the molten zone. Our extensive simulations also suggest that to ensure accurate results, the same mesh should be used, whenever possible, for both the electromagnetic forces and fluid flow calculations.1. IntroductionThe floating zone processes have been widely used in the materials industry to grow ultra-pure rare earth metal or semiconductor single crystals for sensor or electronic applications that have a tough demand on purity. Developed based on the principle of magnetic melting/levitation, the processes possess a main advantage that the molten zone is supported in air by the electromagnetic forces generated by the coil (see Figure 1), and therefore is free from contamination from a container. Consequently, the final products made from the floating zone processes have higher inherent purity than those by other techniques [1-4].Complex physical phenomena occur in the floating zone processing of materials. These include free surface deformation, magnetically-driven melt flow, which may be turbulent or mildly turbulent [5] depending on the applied conditions, and solidification. Thermal stresses also develop in the single crystals, which are affected by the flow and temperature field and which can have direct implications to qualities of single crystals [6]. An understanding of the fundamentals governing these physical phenomena can be of critical value in elucidating the physics that controls the properties of the metal or semiconductor crystals being produced, thereby providing a rational basis for process improvement and quality control."

"Rare earth resources are strategic and non-renewable resources. But disordered exploitation on rare earth metals leads to resources waste, environmental pollution and ecosystem destroyed. In this paper, soil collected from garden was cultured in thermostated incubator. Adding exogenous rare earth to the soil and the effects of recombination action of rare earth lanthanum, cerium and yttrium on soil enzymatic activities were studied. The results showed that single metal La and Ce can increase urease activity, but Y inhibits its. Coexist La/Y or La/Ce in soil inhibit the urease activity, coexist Y /Ce or coexist three metals promote its. Single metal La, Y and Ce can promote catalase activity, and that of coexist three metals. Pairwise coexist La, Y, Ce in soil inhibit catalase activity. IntroductionThe increase of rare earth element content due to anthropogenic inputs frequently takes place in agro-industrial areas, leading to soil pollution episodes that may cause serious environmental problems because of their potential toxicity to microorganisms, plants, animals and human beings [ 1]. China is abundant in lanthanides resources. Rare earth metals are used in many frontier technologies such as photic devices, magnetic materials, and fine ceramics, and the amount of the rare earth metals used in these industries has been increasing. In addition to their use in industry, rare earth metals are more widely applied to cropland as microelement fertilizers due to their ability to promote growth and productivity of some crops [2]. As a result, more and more rare earth metals are moving into the ecosystems. While a permanent contamination of soils results in populations of micro-organisms with high resistance to rare earth metals, a short-term burden of contaminants at high concentrations could exert inhibitory effects on microbial carbon [3]. They accumulate in soils, bioaccumulate in crops, and enter the food chain, causing a potential problem of rare earth metals environmental pollution in China [4]. This contamination may also severely influence organisms and soil activities [5]."

Results of a study conducted to determine the properties of iron ore pellets made from Mount Wright and Carol Lake ore concentrate fines with partial and full substitution of bentonite by several organic binders are presented. Carboxy methyl celluloses 7H and 6TL, hydroxy ethyl cellulose (natrosol) and modified guar gum all produce pellets of acceptable wet, green and dry strength. However, when fully substituted, an inorganic binder such as calcium carbonate is required for satisfactory strength development after induration. Mixing the Carol Lake ore with Mount Wright ore in a 50-50 ratio also achieves the same result. The failure of the Carol Lake ore in the pelletization process is attributed to the low hematite content of the ore. The results are very similar to those from the extrusion studies reported earlier (8).

"Biodiesel production is normally associated with large plantations of oily vegetables such as soybean and colza, in large rural areas. However, in the municipal limits of the city of Rio de Janeiro, southeast of Brazil, biodiesel is being produced from wastes commonly generated by typical urban activities such as sewage sludge, discarded fat from meat markets and post-used cooking oils. In the present work, the experience of producing biodiesel from urban wastes in Rio de Janeiro is assessed. The type of precursor materials, equipments and logistics are presented. The environmental and economical advantages as well as the drawbacks are discussed.IntroductionThe interest for a liquid fuel that could substitute those obtained from petroleum started more than one hundred years ago when Rudolph Diesel tested his no-spark internal combustion engine, impelled by compression, with peanut oil. By that time, petroleum was beginning to be extracted in large scale and no one was concerned with the future environmental problems and its eventual depletion. In the last century, the successful association of petroleum based fuels with the automotive industry was an almost insurmountable obstacle to any attempt to use nonmineral oils [1]. In addition to the greater efficiency and, by then, lower price of the diesel from petroleum, the use of plain vegetable oils introduced undesirable carbon deposits and reduced the engine lifetime. Today, the situation is reverse. The continuous increase in the price of petroleum and, above all, its contribution to climate changes are strongly motivating the use of biofuels to replace those obtained from fossil fuels such as petroleum, natural gas and coal [2].In the case of the common petroleum derived diesel, many countries are now engaged in large scale substitution programs. The USA should produce more than 700 million litters of biodiesel, while the European Community is expected too produce around 6.5 billion litters in 2008. In Brazil, the federal biodiesel program imposed a minimum of 2% addition to the common diesel. This would demand a production of 800 million litters in 2008 [3]. The Brazilian biodiesel is made from a diversified source of vegetables mainly castor bean, African palm and soybean. The main producers are agrobusiness firms located in large rural areas of the Brazilian hinterland [4]."

"The nucleated casting process currently under development has the potential for production of Ni-base superalloy preforms that possess superior microstructure to product made by conventional casting processes, primarily for gas turbine applications. In this process, electroslag remelted (ESR) clean (i.e., free of ceramic inclusions) molten metal is conveyed via a watercooled copper Cold-walled Induction Guide (CIG) to a gas atomizer. The spray of clean metal droplets is then directly cast into a water-cooled crucible for ingot production. The microstructure of the resulting ingot preform evolves within the length scale of the individual droplets and is a function of the thermal state of the incoming metal droplets. This, in turn, depends on particle size, flight time and heat exchange with the gas phase.In the present study, computational models is developed for the analysis of the flow and heat transfer in the gas-metal spray system under axisymmetric and steady-state conditions. The gasphase flow is analyzed using an Eulerian framework and turbulent mixing within the gas phase is modeled using the two-equation k-e model. The dynamics of the metal particles is analyzed using a Lagrangian framework that involves calculation of the trajectories of the metal droplets. A two-way coupling is considered whereby the transport and heat transfer in the gas and the metal phases influence each other.The analysis is developed at two levels. The spray model performs a detailed calculation of the spray dynamics in the vicinity of the spray and is intended for predicting the temperature and mass flux distributions of the metal spray depositing into the mold. The chamber model enables prediction of gas flow and motion of metal particles in the entire spray chamber."

"Age hardenable 2014 aluminum alloys and composites containing 0.10 and 0.15 volume fractions of alumina particles (VFAP) have been solutionized at 540 and 550°C for up to 20 hours. The solutionized samples, heat treated for 5 and 20 hours, have been subjected to room temperature rolling until cracking develops. The work hardening curves have been compared to determine the effect of solutionizing time on the rolling characteristics from both hardness and the microstructural evolution points of view. Solutionizing at two different temperatures results in differences in the extent to which the composites can be rolled until fracture. The microstructural characterization by TEM has been performed to understand the room temperature rolling behavior.IntroductionThe effect of solutionizing on the age hardening response of 6061 and 2014 aluminum alloys and composites reinforced with 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 volume fractions of alumina particles (VFAP) have been reported in the literature [1-4]. A comparison of the monolith and composites indicates that particles promote the aging process through differences in the microstructures in solutionized condition. The first effect of solutionizing is to produce a grain growth process which follows a grain growth law (square of grain diameter as a function of solutionizing time). It appears that it is possible for vacancies to be emitted during grain growth period as they try to minimize the total grain boundary surface area by increasing their diameter. This may be common to both the monolith and the composites. However, the second effect must be exclusively considered for the composites. The particles generate dislocations during the solutionizing process due to the differences in the values of the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) between the particles and aluminum base metal. It has been determined [1] that the dislocation density increases with increase in solutionizing time in the composites of 6061 aluminum alloys reinforced with 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 VFAP. The improved bonding between particles and matrix can give rise to additional generation of dislocations due to curvature effects [1] with the result that the dislocation density continues to increase with increase in solutionizing time even after the CTE effect is considered to have been stabilized."

"The influence of an unconventional lance with a central nozzle on the multiphase fluid flow in a steelmaking converter is studied in this work by means of computer simulations. The lance has four peripheral supersonic nozzles and a vertical central nozzle. Besides, the oxygen flow in the central nozzle is considered independent from the main oxygen supply. Transient two-dimensional numerical simulations were carried out considering just molten steel and gaseous oxygen as the existing phases. Numerical results show that bath agitation and droplet generation are enhanced as a result of the central nozzle. However, the performance of this lance strongly depends on the distance of the lance tip to the molten steel surface and the velocity of the oxygen jet.IntroductionCurrently, two thirds of the world crude steel is produced through the steelmaking oxygen converter [1]. Given the unquestionable economic importance of this technology, any improvement or optimization proposal is welcome. In the majority of current oxygen converters a top oxygen supersonic jet is blown onto the molten steel through a water-cooled lance to eliminate by oxidation some impurities such as carbon and phosphorus. Conventional lances have inclined peripheral nozzles whose number depends on the converter capacity. During the process, a large amount of gases evolves, forming metal droplets and a metal-slag-gas emulsion [2]. The droplets and the resultant emulsion increase the reaction interfacial area, promoting in this way carbon removal and dephosphorization of the molten steel bath [3]. However, during the blowing stage, the emulsion rises towards the lance and converter mouth and frequently forms layers which accumulate in the lance, reducing the life of the lance tip [4, 5]. It is possible that some freezing of the molten metal occurs due to the low oxygen injection temperature, however there are no reports on this. Besides, frequently undesirable operating phenomena such as spitting and slopping may arise as a result of inappropriate blowing practices or bad lance design. In the oxygen steelmaking industry, novel lances design are needed in order to enhance the decaburization rate and the slag formation and, at the same time, preventing operating practices that decrease productivity and move away the shop from safety standards."

"In this study, the utilization capability of the solid wastes taken from a commercial roof tile and brick factory in Eskisehir of Turkiye has been investigated in the production of stoneware bodies which can be formed by slip casting. At the first stage, X-ray fluorescent (XRF) and X-ray difractometer (XRD) analyses of the wastes were performed. Depending upon the results, a body recipe with an optimum casting concentration was adjusted. The bodies obtained from prepared slips were fired at 1160 oC as glazed and unglazed forms. Then, they were undergone certain tests in order to determine their firing shrinkage values, water absorption levels and optical parameters. To establish what kind of phase formations occurred after firing as a result of waste incorporations into bodies XRD analysis was conducted. Additionally, effects of such a compositional modification on the microstructure of the bodies were examined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Consequently, it was concluded that fired roof tile and brick wastes could be evaluated in both glazed and unglazed stoneware bodies. Introduction Stoneware is the general name applied to many wares fired between 1150 and 1300 °C. It has a different and denser structure than those of ceramics produced at lower temperatures. Fired stoneware possesses a lower water absorption value. When matured at a high temperature, it gives a possibility for the use of feldspar as a main ingredient [1-2]. Colors of stoneware can be brown, red, white and most of the times beige. Firing usually takes place in oxidation atmosphere but also reduction can be rarely used. This naturally has an effect on the body colors [3]. Earth, which contains clay minerals, becomes plastic mud when mixed with water, has a capability to be easily shaped and can be hardened without cracking if fired at 900-1000 °C, is referred as one of the brick and tile raw materials [4]. Natural and aesthetic appearances of buildings obtained with brick and tile products, which make them preferable especially for construction sector, are of importance. Because clays being main raw material of that type of productions generally do not exist as pure materials in nature, their usability depends on their mineralogy and impurities they contain [5]."
