Quartz-limestone feed mixtures were ground in a laboratory-size, choke-fed, high- pressure roll mill. As compared to individually ground minerals, the harder component (quartz) in the product mixture is coarser, and the softer component (limestone) is finer. An energy split index is introduced for quantifying the disproportionate split of the mill energy between the feed constituents. This index is incorporated into a grinding kinetic model for simulation of the product size distributions of the mineral components as a function of energy input to the mill. The self-similar character of the size distributions is analyzed and an energy-size reduction relationship for the roll mill is highlighted.

The molecular form of aliphatic amines precipitates in alkaline solutions when the amine solubility limit is exceeded and forms a typical colloidal system. The zones of mines precipitation and micellization are defined and it is shown that the appearance of a colloidal system in a certain pH range is a unique feature that makes weak electrolyte type surfactants differ from strong electrolytes. The formation of iono-molecular complexes reported in the literature is shown to be a pre-precipitation phenomenon. The zeta potential - pH curves for minerals and bubbles in the presence of amines in the pH range where the amine forms a colloidal precipitate are entirely determined by the precipitate. The pH dependence of the flotation of certain minerals using amines is discussed in the light of these findings.

"For a long time, the recultivation of depleted opencast mines and operating systems was aimed at restoring the original state. The focus, as desired by policy-makers and the local population alike, was on restoring high-quality agricultural land and on creating reforested areas of value that suit their location. Until the turn of the millennium, recultivation measures were only rarely the subject matter of public planning processes beyond these general objectives. They were never regarded as nucleus and origin of sustainable structural developments. The rehabilitation of inactive lignite opencast mines in central and eastern Germany brought about a change in mind-set that understood recultivation to be a unique opportunity to completely redesign a landscape and gear it towards the future in the Rhenish mining area as well. The ""Inden residual lake"" and ""terra nova"" projects, planned in the last 10 years in cooperation with policy-makers and authorities, are two undertakings that provide sustainable structural impetus for the future today."

Controlling long overland conveyors with multiple drive stations is a complex problem. The methods for controlling these belts in a steady state are well-covered in existing literature, but a discussion of starting and stopping strategies is absent. This paper outlines different control strategies for starting, stopping and running conveyors with multiple drive stations. To illustrate the benefits of applying the methods described in this paper, the authors show how their adoption corrected many of the control system problems at Essroc Cement’s overland conveyor, which features three drive stations separated from each other by long lengths of continuous conveyor belt.

The abstract discusses the issue of mine equipment fires caused by hot surface ignition of flammable liquids. The research investigates the ignition probability of liquid fuels (diesel, engine oil, hydraulic fluid) on different metal surfaces (stainless steel, cast iron, carbon steel) under various ventilation speeds. The results show that the type of metal and ventilation speed influence the ignition temperature, with diesel being the most easily ignited fuel and carbon steel requiring a higher ignition temperature. The study provides data for understanding equipment mine fires and developing mitigation strategies.

The physical chemistry of dissolution of silicate and complex oxide ores in aqueous lixiviants has been reviewed. Particular attention has been paid to the analysis of dissolution mechanisms and kinetic models and to the elucidation of the role of the porous nature of the materials on dissolution behavior. Importance of the physico-chemical characteristics of the leach residues on leaching efficiency has been discussed.

During the induration of fluxed taconite pellets, alkali salts deposit on the grate support bars, causing severe corrosive degradation of these alloys. To determine the source of these deposits and to understand the mechanism by which the salts are conveyed to the grate bars, a study of the reactions between fluxed pellets and combustion gas was carried out. The study focused on the thermodynamics and kinetics of several processes associated with induration; namely, oxidation of magnetite, calcination of flux, and the formation and gaseous transport of various alkali salt species. Both theoretical and experimental techniques were used. It was concluded that the principal source of alkali salt deposits is alkali chlorides, which are present as contaminants in the flux and/or residue from contaminated washwater. The pathway from pellet to grate bar involves the following steps: evaporation of chloride salts within the pellet; diffusion of salt vapor out of the pellet, aided by the outflow of CO2 from calcination of the flux; convective transport by the combustion gas with concurrent (partial) conversion to alkali sulfates by reaction with residual SOX in the combustion gas; and condensation of salts on the grate bars.

Traditional or artisanal goldmining, also known as small scale goldmining, has a strong and probably a negative environmental impact. The processing methods applied are very frequently a source of severe pollution due to the emissions of mercury by the extraction of gold by means of amalgamation as well as the emissions of cyanide through cyanide leaching of gold bearing ores. The emissions find their way into the environment and contaminate soils, sediments, water and atmosphere. Abnormal concentrations of mercury and cyanides in waterways are known to occur year after year destroying irreplaceable regions of the world. Mercury and cyanide compounds are highly toxic and may directly create permanent damage to the whole ecosystem. Existing methods for recycling of mercury and for decontamination of mercury and cyanide contaminated tailings are not customary applied in small scale mining and are ineffective as well. Based on investigations of traditional and small size goldmining, this paper presents: -processing methods of gold and discarded tailings under consideration of environmental protection; -figures on actual situation; -recommendations for equipment; -some decontamination methods for mercury and residual cyanide. Mineral Processing methods in traditional gold mining Gold is usually existing in its ores as the metal alloyed with metallic silver and perhaps copper. The element may occur in the form of: -native gold -inclusions also of microns or submicroscopic size metal sulfides (auriferous) such as pyrite, pyrrhotite, stibnite, arsenopyrite and galena -combined as telluride or sulphotelluride. The separation process selected depends on whether the gold can be freed from its unfavorable associations (e.g. gangue) at a sufficiently coarse grain-size, or whether it is carried in a heavy sulfide which can be freed similarly. The usual practice is to concentrate the goldbearing mineral at a relatively coarse grain-size and to regrind the ore if necessary. The gold content is concentrated by secondary or tertiary gravital methods or is extracted by chemical methods (amalgamation, cyanidation etc.) Gold, even when of fine grain-size, settle readily due to its high specific gravity from pulps in which the main gangue mineral is quartz or silicates. Amalgamation is the process of separating gold and silver from their associated minerals by binding (entrapping) them into a mixture with mercury. The cyanide process is applied to separate gold or gold-bearing compounds by dissolution from the finely ground ore (CIP, CIL, RIP), or as heap leaching. The dissolved gold is separated from the solids and the metal-rich or pregnant solution is then treated to recover its gold. Gold is also recovered by flotation methods. This process is widely used in treating base metal ores and in separating various sulfide components of ores, as well as in removing the barren gangue. The gold usually associates with a specific product in a sequence of flotation operations and is recovered subsequently in the smelting of the sulfide concentrates and refining of the metallic products, or by cyanidation of the roasted concentrates. Froth-flotation can be applied to separate gold and sulfide minerals from a finely ground pulp. The Amalgamation Process Amalgamation is the main method for the recovery of gold in traditional mining and is applied for the extraction of gold from placers as well as primary ores. The mineral technology used depends on the nature of ore deposits. In winning gold from solid ore, the matrix of minerals and rocks must be crushed and ground to sufficient fineness to liberate the gold. The liberated gold could be treated similar as free gold from placers. Gold is mainly separated from the valueless gangue (barren rock) by utilizing the difference between the density of the impure native metal (density about 16-19) and the gangue (density about 2.5). In simple operations the material is carried by a stream of water down a sluice generally equipped with small transverse barriers (riffles) against which the gold collects. The riffled sluice is the principal device used by artisanal gold miners. Nowadays, spirals as well as centrifuges, such as Knelson separator or Falcon separator, are occasionally applied for gold recovery. Gold may also be recovered from the pulp, by passing it over corduroycovered tables that catch the heavier particles - a method maybe as ancient as gold mining itself. Application of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) is one of the main solutions to achieve a safe and high-performance method of construction in hard rock and soft ground tunneling. In order to adequately assess the progress and potential impacts of the tunneling operations with the TBM, it is required to record a series of data during the tunneling and process of the data to evaluate the TBM performance. Applying the right machine parameters during the excavation not only delivers an optimum penetration rate, but also prevents extra downtime due to over excavation or wear of cutting tools. In this paper, the effect of machine and operational parameters on TBM downtimes has been studied and supported with the real examples of TBM operation data.

I appreciate this opportunity to discuss with you OPIC's new policies designed to assist U.S. minerals companies in developing new sources of minerals overseas. A comparison of recent figures on U.S. investment in mineral exploration, development and production gives results which are remarkable --and disturbing. Through the 1960's the flow of U.S. foreign direct investment in mining and smelting in the developed and less developed countries were nearly equal. However, by 1973, roughly 80% of all exploration expenditures by mining companies was taking place in the developed countries and principally in the U.S., Canada and Australia. Clearly it is to the interests of both the developing countries and the United States to put these figures back in better balance. As you may be aware, the administration as a whole is examining systematically what can be done by government to reduce the disincentives and increase the incentives to mineral investment in the less developed countries --the LDCs. A subgroup of the National Advisory Council chaired by the Treasury Department has been formed to coordinate U. S. Government policy and program efforts relating to mineral and energy development in these countries. Among other matters, this subgroup will examine how public policies could positively influence the private investment decision-making process in the minerals industry.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private investment arm of the World Bank Group (WBG), requires all IFC-financed projects to comply with its environmental and social policies and guidelines. IFC's review process involves an environmental and social assessment and the implementation of an Environmental Action Plan (EAP) that will set forth the necessary actions to bring the operation into compliance. This paper provides an overview of the environmental and social policies and guidelines that apply to mining projects and examines how WBG/IFC policies and guidelines are applied to mining projects in developing countries. In addition, it includes a review of the increased emphasis IFC is giving to social issues over the past several years based on the existing WBG policies. IFC’s process for the environmental and social review of proposed investments is briefly discussed. The paper focuses on how IFC emphasis has shifted from the traditional environmental and impact mitigation analyses of a few years ago to the integrated social and environmental awareness, action (EAP), and implementation programs (social plans) required today. Today, IFC's focus is to promote sustainable development by investing in projects that directly benefit local communities and the environment. Examples of these changes will be highlighted by a review of recent investments located in West Africa. The goalposts have not moved, but the rules of the game have become tougher.

Mr. C. A. Hollingsworth introduced commercial column flotation to the Florida Phosphate Industry in 1976, with a six feet diameter prototype cell at the Tenoroc Mine. More than two-dozen column cells have been installed in phosphate beneficiation plants since then. The increased interest in column cells for phosphate flotation, and their potential use in new plant construction, prompted the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research to fund programs to investigate various aspects of column flotation. This report describes a test program, conducted by JACOBS at CF Industries Hardee Complex II, as part of a comprehensive research program awarded to the University of Florida by the Florida Institute of Phosphate Research. The 1.5 feet diameter test column was operated with plant process water and plant reagentized flotation feed. Several variables considered for column cells design and operation were tested. Feed specific capacity, air superficial velocity, and the length to diameter ratio of the column were the variables that influenced phosphate recovery. Concentrate phosphate grade was influenced by concentrate superficial velocity and feed specific capacity.

Accurate positioning information is a central step in the process of increasing automation and digitalization in the mining industry. Underground mine environments are prime examples for GNSS-denied environments that pose several additional challenges for the employed indoor positioning system (IPS). This work presents an ultra-wideband (UWB)- based system specifically tailored for underground mine environments. Initially, the UWB technology is reviewed and basic concepts of IPS are explained. Both software and hardware are described in detail, including positioning algorithms, electrical circuitry and the mining-compatible enclosure. Finally, the results from field tests in an underground mine are presented and positioning performance and the influence of dilution of precision (DOP) on positioning results are empirically evaluated. The results show that the localization errors are mostly below 1 m. Individual zones of high localization errors are suspected to be caused by noise interference. Significant DOP influence due to the mining drift geometry can be confirmed. The system shows promising localization results for different mining applications, while influences negatively impacting the accuracy are presented as items for future research.

Gold leaching of an auriferous pyrite ore from the Portovelo deposit in Ecuador indicates that noncyanide leaching systems, such as thiocyanate and thiourea, are not as effective as the traditional cyanide system. For example, whereas approximately 95% of the gold can be leached from the ore with cyanide, only about 50% gold dissolution can be achieved with a thiocyanate leaching system. Electrochemical measurements indicate that gold is not cathodically protected by pyrite in these systems. Based on the results of preliminary diagnostic experiments, it appears that gold dissolution in thiocyanate and thiourea systems is limited by passivation due to the formation of either elemental sulfur or sulfur compounds on the gold surface.

The effect of pretreatment potential on the response of a gold electrode for Eh measurements in sulfide solutions was examined in terms of measured Eh values and electrode response time. The electrode response time is defined as the time required for the electrode to reach a steady-state value. The relationship between measured Eh values and the hydrosulfide ion concentration is established. The effect of pH, the reversibility of the gold electrode in the sulfide solutions, and the reproducibility of measurements are also investigated. A mixed potential theory is proposed to explain the observations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated leaching of off-grade western United States phosphate deposits using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) in the presence of methanol. A combination of ore grinding followed by sulfuric acid in methanol leaching extracted over 80 pct of the phosphate. This leaching technique significantly limited the dissolution of iron, aluminum, and magnesium impurities and produced a phosphoric acid that was well within the desired limits for these impurities. The dissolution rate of phosphate rock in the sulfuric acid methanol system was significantly slower than the conventional aqueous sulfuric acid dissolution. Initially dissolution of the phosphate particle was controlled by the amount of surface area available to the sulfuric acid reactant. After about an hour of leaching, phosphate dissolution was slowed almost to a stop, limited by the rate of ion diffusion through the calcium sulfate barrier layer surrounding the unreacted phosphate particle. Consequently, the ore was ground below 38-pm to increase the particle surface area available and improve the overall dissolution kinetics and extraction. In addition, the sulfuric acid was slowly metered into the reactor to prevent any excess heat from the mixing of acid with the methanol from simulating the formation of methyl sulfates. The formation of methyl sulfate ultimately lowered the overall phosphate extraction by exhausting the supply of available sulfate ions for the dissolution reaction. Subsequent evaporation of the methanol from the product acid decomposed the methyl sulfates leaving undesirable sulfate ions in the product acid. Slow acid addition to the reactor provided high phosphate extraction and limited the amount of sulfate in the final product acid.

Now their use runs the gamut from low end data acquisition systems to high performance windows into the process area. Their applications range from CAD, CAM, CIM, and CAE to factory floor scheduling, process planning QC, facility management, cell control, and publishing. This discussion traces the evolution of a zinc plant's control automation program beginning with a PC as an operator interface and migrating to higher level work stations. Included in this paper will be a discussion of an Open Industrial System and the role PCs have played in this facility.

On-line analyzers have made possible the use of Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) for local control applications in coal preparation plants. This includes FLC control of complete circuits such as heavy media vessels, cyclones and froth flotation. These circuits can be controlled in real time in a feedback control loop with an on-line analyzer. Control strategies can be readily developed using Statistical Process Control (SPC) techniques which are first applied off-line in manual mode through the use of control charts and then this process is brought on-line using FLC in conjunction with an on-line analyzer to fully automate the circuit. This paper outlines the types of control strategies employed and presents examples of automatic verses manual control.

In situ experiments at the Department of Energy's Nevada Test Site (NTS) have extended the technology of propellant-based fracturing to include liquid- filled, uncased boreholes. Previous work had developed the technology for liquid-free, uncased wellbores. Test results show that fracturing behavior is considerably more complex in liquid- filled boreholes than in the liquid-free case. Compared to liquid-free boreholes, liquid-filled boreholes have faster pressure risetimes and lower peak pressures, large hydraulic-type fractures propagating several meters beyond the end of the test zone, numerous oscillations in the pressure history, and variable types of fracturing within a single test region. Multiple fracturing is initiated in the wellbore of a fluid-filled borehole when the proper propellant mixture is used but, unlike fluid-free wellbores where up to eight fractures propagate, only one to three hydraulic- and/or shear-type fractures propagate. Hydrodynamic effects involving liquid compression during borehole pressurization appear to be responsible for the differing phenomena observed in fluid- filled boreholes.
