Although it is apparent that porphyry copper deposits may have formed in the Andean orogen from Permian time onward, commercial deposits thus far developed appear to have Cenozoic ages only. Following Chilean useage, the porphyry deposits are divided into either: (a) a stockwork, or (b) a tourmaline breccia model. Stockwork type deposits tend to occur on major strike-slip structures which may be either transcurrent or transverse faults related to plate movements, while the tourmaline breccia type may more frequently form independently of regional faults. Stockwork types may be conjugate fractures that intersect and ramify as a network of veins and veinlets, cutting altered rock, and genetically related to a major regional fault, or in other cases they may reflect the intersection of two large fault structures. Circular fracture patterns may more rarely occur in stockwork deposits in response to a specific intrusive. Tourmaline breccia types are characterized by circular and radial fractures genetically connected in some way with tourmaline breccia pipe development or an intrusive piercement that preceded it. Each structural model contains mineralized intrusive8 which have a close time-space relationship to ore and in each model, mineral paragenesis is similar, regardless of age or location in the plate. Also, each model contains the same type of alterntion halos (phyllic, argillic, prophllitic) as are developed in intru- sive centers in porphyry copper deposits found in North America. The potassic zone is exposed best in the older deposits. Examples of each type of deposit are illustrated, demonstrating the feature evolved.

A virtual reality approach is presented that can aid entities such as mining companies and land use planners in communicating a visual understanding of a mining operation to interested stakeholders, citizens? groups, and public committees. These visualizations are particularly useful in permitting, production planning and mining closures, contributing to accurate communication and evaluation of mine plans, ultimate land use and evaluation of potential design options A case study is presented, that was created using commercially available virtual reality tools, to emphasize the benefits of visualization technologies in the sustainable development of mineral resources.

The Romanian mining industry, especially salt mining, is going through a restructuring phase taking into account the Environment Acquis of the European Union1. In order to preserve the centuries-old salt mines and to develop new ones, in the same salt rock deposit, the long term stability assessment of the saline complex is very important. This case study refers to the Praid salt mine, which includes old salt mines, with impressive sizes, located above the new mines, with activity in progress, in order to provide the means and solutions for efficient conservation and sustainable exploitation for the salt resources. The DKRControl method and FLAC 3D code were used in order to assess the confidence level for the computed prediction of the stability of the salt mine complex salt.

Non-ferrous smelting industry in Japan often had the severe problems about the over production of sulfuric acid. There has been such a closed relation between amount of sulfuric acid from non-ferrous smelting industry and the products of copper, zinc and lead metals that the production of one ton of copper accompanies three tons of H2S04. When the proper balance exists in both markets this situation certainly brings bigger profits. In Xining and Metallurgical Institute of Japan the research commitee concerned with the fixation process of sulfur in non-ferrous smelting industry was established in 1977 and continued the activity for four years untill 1981. This paper will introduce some of the activities involved in the report published by the committee.

ENERGY POI.ICY-PRINCIPLES AND THEIR PRACTICE Persistently, at least since the end of World War 11, governments have intervened broadly, deeply, and incoherently in major energy markets. If we take a broad definition of energy that encompasses gas distribution and electric power, we can observe regulations of even older vintage. This trend, of course, is not unique to energy. Expansion of government controls has occurred in many areas. The relevant basic question about energy regulation, therefore, is not why is energy special, but whether any general principles exist to explain the wisdom of existing regulations. This review takes place at a time, the middle 1980s, in which a massive onslaught is being undertaken against government regulation. However, the present chapter is influenced primarily by my observations of the failures of energy regulations and not by any inspiration from those ideologically opposed to government intervention. Several subquestions arise in policy appraisal. A primary need is to establish clear objectives and determine the consistency between these goals and the policies imposed. Thus, the first step is to set objectives. The next is to outline ways to attain these goals. However, it should be recognized that many apparently distinct options are economically equivalent. When the goal is to charge producers or consumers for something, it is possible to attain the same result through either government ownership or taxing private transactions. The tax can raise the price to the level the government would have charged if it were the owner. Creation of a Department of Energy is not necessarily any different from having separate energy agencies well coordinated by some small supervisory body. Thus, a distinction should be made between substance and form in policymaking. The critical substance concerns such matters as whether the government imposes financial penalties, incentives, or rules to attain a goal. Then, there can be many equivalent ways to implement the basic policy form. The second prior illustration suggests that one favorite question is how to attain proper integration of policy. At various times, voices on either (or even both) sides of the Atlantic have called for a coordinated energy policy. The U.S. Paley Commission made this a primary goal for future policy. The western European governments that were the founding members of the Coal and Steel, Economic, and Atomic Energy Communities spent much time in the middle fifties and much of the sixties trying futilely to agree on an energy policy. (See Gordon, 1970 for an annotated review). The energy price rises of the 1970s rekindled United States interest in coordination. However, astute observers of the problem such as O. C. Herfindahl of the United States and Maurice Allais (1 962) in France warned the discussions confused form with substance. The crucial issues were what were the goals and what were the best types of policies to attain such goals. Policy suffered, not from poor organization, but from discord about the goals and how to attain them. All this suggests that we need principles to guide policy appraisal. The study of soft soil (wastes above the rock bed) an issue of great importance in civil engineering, is usually addressed by drilling boreholes. This method is rather expensive and time-consuming and although the information obtained is usually accurate, on the other hand it is much localized. Recently published researches have demonstrated the ability of the combination of geophysical exploration methods to estimate the thickness of deposited wastes, which provides the layered structure of the study area and certain, method depended, mechanical parameters as well. By theory, the frequency of resonance of an upper layer is a function of its thickness and the average shear velocity in it. Furthermore, the application of H/V spectral ratios of micro-tremors is a fast, straight forward and cost effective methodology, yielding the determination of the main resonant frequency of the soil. Based on this framework, 20 microtremor measurements have been carried out in a Landfill in Heraklion-Crete. Some of these measurements were deliberately close to drilled sites, where the basement had been reached. Three electrical resistivity tomographies were also used, in order to define the landfill structure such as, thickness, determination of different wastes distribution in the study area and other parameters. In addition, estimation of predictive Vs using empirical relationship between shear velocity and penetration resistance (SPT?s) were also conducted. Knowing the thickness and the resonant frequency, we estimated the shear (Vs) velocity of the waste cover. The final Vs model was confirmed using the results from the Vs-SPT correlation. The combinative implementation of the above mentioned geophysical and geotechnical methods have successfully defined geometrical and geotechnical/geophysical characteristics of the area under investigation in a fast and cost effective way.

The ore reserve modeling of stratiform uranium deposits to be mined by selective underground mining methods must be done with consideration of the erratic nature of the ore forming processes that produced the mineralization. Estimation methods that model the uranium grade as a smooth transition between high grade and low grade drillhole intercepts tend to greatly overestimate the ore tonnage. Care must be taken to first establish realistic ore pod geometries and then estimate the grade of the reserve units within the pods.

The filter is an apparatus designed to hold the filter medium. At such a medium takes place the entire liquid-solid or gas-solid separation process. Hence, the medium is really the essence of filtration. Yet, the medium, an originally clean porous substance with trapped solids in it, is perhaps the most neglected part of filtration research. Basically three problems prevail at the medium: 1) Penetration of solids and their blinding of the medium and the influence of such blinding on the resistance to flow. ii) The behavior of the medium in long term repetitive filtration. iii) The filter effect phenomenon whereby the flow rate on filtering an apparently clear liquid through a medium decreases with time. This study undertakes to investigate these fundamental processes.

This first section of case histories of mineral discoveries, Vol. 3, covers some of the milestones in porphyry copper and skam exploration successes. It was during the era of these discoveries that large, complex exploration departments emerged as permanent adjuncts of large mining companies. The discoveries helped shape how and where exploration activity was conducted. Probably the most important factor in exploration success is management. Few management people are mentioned in this section or in any exploration history, yet the distinction between success and failure ultimately rested with the decisions they made. One of the most successful groups was initiated by Roger Straus and Herbert Brownell when they sought to make Asarco into an important metal producer. Relying on Clem Pollock and L.H. (Bill) Hart to identify and push worthwhile projects, the Asarco management remade the company. Asarco will benefit from exploration successes com- pounded by that team for years to come. Duval is an example of a management that decided to add metal production to its industrial minerals output. When Page Morris was president, that company opened three major porphyry copper mines and became an important factor in metals. Under the Monis management team, Duval became a leader in exploration. At the other end of the scale are managements that snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and by so doing changed the character of their companies in other ways.

Increasingly, geotechnical data are being collected for various types of coal development projects. In many cases, a specific design concern is addressed. However, many data collection programs are not intended to immediately support mine design activities or to resolve a specific concern. The following discussion describes some current geotechnical approaches in mine planning, development of reserves, and peripheral activities. Types of Data Collection Programs Geotechnical data collection is increasingly becoming a part of standard coal exploration programs, performed along with stratigraphic evaluations and coal quality tests. The aims of such programs vary. The purpose of the exploration may be to fill out the portfolio on a block of reserves that is to be sold, leased, or held for potential future development. In such a case, a generic suite of geotechnical data are collected. The resulting engineering reports may touch on the more well known mining problems of the area, but detail may be lacking. The geotechnical data are mostly intended to enhance the saleability of the package. Mine design alternatives are generally not addressed.

4.1 – DEFINITIONS 4.1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS, ORES AND NONMETALLIC MINERALS F. N. EARLL A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound. Most minerals are distinctly crystalline in habit, and many commonly occur in well-formed crystals or crystalline aggregates, but a few species are characteristically amorphous or noncrystalline. Nearly 2,000 mineral species are now recognized but, perhaps fortun¬ately, a rather large proportion are rarely encountered. Even so, the application of modern mineral-detection and identification techniques reveals the presence of surprising numbers of mineral species, even in deposits of outwardly simple mineralogy. A rock is an aggregate of grains or crystals of one or more minerals. Some rocks are essentially monomineralic. Thus, limestone consists largely of the mineral calcite, and many sandstones are dominantly quartz. Most rock varieties, however, contain a number of mineral species, and their classification or identification depends upon the minerals present, their relative abundance, and such factors as rock tex¬ture and origin. Ore is defined as an accumulation or deposit of one or more minerals that can be exploited at a profit. The profit criterion commonly is taken somewhat liberally, however, for, although always present, the specific mineral content that constitutes a viable product is transitory. The term ore, usually, but no longer consistently, is restricted to the description of mineral deposits that are of value for their metal content. Nonmetallic deposits, although similar to metallic ores in many respects, generally are valued for the minerals or compounds present, as with rock salt (halite), rather than for individual contained elements, though such minerals as elemental sulfur are of much value. 4.1.2-ROCK TYPES F. N. EARLL Rocks arc grouped tinder three broad headings: (1) igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of magma; (2) sedimentary rocks formed by surface processes of weathering and deposition; and (3) metamorphic rocks, which may have been derived from either of the foregoing, but have undergone important physical and/or chemical changes through the application of heat or pressure, or both. The three groups can he further subdivided for convenient reference. Thus, igneous rocks are described as being abyssal or plutonic if formed at great depth, hypabyssal if formed at intermediate depth, and extrusive or effusive if formed at or on the earth's surface. The sedimentary rock group is similarly subdivided into clastic sediments and chemical precipitates. The clastic sediments form by deposition of preexisting minerals that were released from their place of origin by weathering and were transported to their point of deposition as discrete grains

The most famous landmark of the city of Graz (Austria) is the clock tower on the castle hill. An underground chamber was built as a multifunctional structure beneath this landmark. The required structure was designed as cavern. The overburden to the clock tower in the north side of the cavern was only 30 m. To allow access from the city to the chamber and the clock tower, a vertical shaft was built near the cavern. Rock excavation was by drill and blast method. The pilot shaft was made by the raise-boring method. Because the location of the building site was in the center of Graz, special care was taken to minimize deformations and vibrations so as to protect surrounding buildings.

Rio Algom Mines Ltd. owns eight uranium mines and mills in the Elliot Lake district of Ontario, seven of which were producing before 1960. At present only one mine is operating meeting current contract requirements. Under present economic conditions, it is not feasible to mine ore of less than 2.0 lbs./ton U308, although there are very large reserves below this grade. We are interested in preconcentration for three possible applications: to extend ore reserves by permitting use of lower grade ore, to reduce costs on processing of present grade ore, and to reduce capital investment in expanding production to meet future production goals.

Abstract. Dynamic experiments were performed in a continuous open-circuit 40x40 cm ball mill using a pseudo-random binary sequence of the feed rate and measuring the variations of the discharge particle-size distribution. The impulse response is calculated by a cross-correlation technique. Then a model involving a discrete transfer function and a time-series stochastic equation is calibrated using maximum likelihood methods. Based on this empirical model. a minimum variance controller with constrained input is designed and its performances are compared. by simulation, to the performances of a conventional PID regulator.

[On Pier D in the Port of Long Beach, California, the Port of Long Beach has built a new bulk cement distribution terminal. The facility is operated by Pacific Coast Cement Corporation, who designed the complex and leased it from the Port of Long Beach on a 40-year lease. At one bulk cement is unloaded from vessels carrying from 12,000 to 30,000 t. The unloading is performed with pig speed mechanical unloading equipment and delivered into a concrete silo complex with, a capacity of 50,000 t. From the silos, bulls cement is loaded into trucks for delivery. The facility was completed in September 1981.]

In many cases the roof strata of a bedded deposit may be considered as a composite of rock beams of rectangular cross section, whose component layers differ in thickness and may or may not be separable from each other when they are subjected to loading by their own weight. An analytical study of the behavior of such multiple-layer beams is extremely difficult owing to the heterogeneity and anisotropy of rock materials. The complexity is revealed by the fringe photographs obtained from several series of barodynamic photostress experiments conducted on various types of multiple-layer model beams of a medium-grained Bedford limestone. Further discussion on the applicability of barodynamic photostress techniques to the model study of the behavior of mine roofs in stratified geologic media is presented by comparing the phenomenological observations recorded in this investigation.

This paper presents in detail the procedures followed and the results obtained in order to determine the stiffness parameters of the calcareous marls found in the lignite mines in Ptolemais, Northern Greece. Triaxial tests were performed on representative samples of the inner burden marl and the marl which underlies the lignite bearing series of the region. The tests were conducted under drained conditions, with controlled loading (including an unloading-reloading loop), while the axial strain was measured externally as well as with displacement transducers mounted directly on the specimen (Hall Effect sensors). The geotechnical parameters obtained (i.e., cohesion, angle of friction, stiffness modulus, stress-strain relationship), were subsequently used for simulating the triaxial testing with the Plaxis finite element software. Simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The resulting material model can then be applied to modeling the mobility that is expressed during the excavation of the open pit mines.

Perlite is a hydrated acid volcanic glass that has been derived from the alteration of obsidians through incorporation of water into the silica structure. It is distinguished from other members of the water-bearing natural glass family by total water content, characteristic fracture and luster. The distribution of major occurrences worldwide is associated with silicic Tertiary through early-mid Quaternary volcanics related to plate movement. The No Agua dome and flow complex is one of the most highly studied perlite occurrences in the world. It clearly exhibits lithologic and textural zonations that reflect simple cooling history. Similar features are commonly observed within other perlitized, extrusive glass selvages. This paper briefly discusses current thought regarding geologic occurrence, the hydration process and the modes of origin with special emphasis on No Agua.
