During the past three years the New York Trap Rock Corporation has been restricting blasting operations to days when favorable atmospheric conditions prevailed. By favorable atmospheric conditions is meant the absence of temperature inversions or isothermals in the lower atmosphere or under 6,000 feet altitude. Strong wind and wind shear can also cause conditions unfavorable for blasting. As a result of this practice, there has been a marked decrease in the number of blasting complaints received. The New York Trap Rock Corporation operates four stone quarries on or near the Hudson River within 60 miles of New York City. The Company supplies approximately 7,080,000 tons of high grade, crushed and graded aggregate, rip rap and by-products to the New Pork City area annually, This stone is carried to the market by a fleet of company owned deck &cows which are moved by tugs of a subsidiary towing company. Stone from two of the quarries is diabase: and, from the remaining two, dolomite.

According to international projections and future energy scenarios, coal will continue to be a prominent fuel for the next 25 years. In fact, in many regions around the world, coal is expected to dominate the electricity sector until the year 2030. At the same time, with instability and volatility of oil prices, coal is also positioned as an alternative feed stock for conversion into liquid fuels. Energy economists maintain that coal liquefaction is viable at crude oil prices of $35 or more per barrel. Depending on technology and coal composition, 1 ton of coal can produce 1 to 4 barrels of oil. Increased coal production and the expanded utilization of coal also raise environmental concerns regarding greenhouse gases and the problem of handling CO2. Carbon sequestration research, currently conducted in many parts of the world, has demonstrated considerable potential for C-storage in unminable coal seams. Such geologic storage, when possible, can also be integrated into an enhanced coal bed methane recovery process Can coal fuel power plants and industrial facilities, provide diesel and other liquids and, at the same, also be used as a medium for permanently storing CO2? This presentation will provide a global perspective on these questions and stress on the need to reconsider, or even redefine, coal as the fuel for the future.

At the 25th Peruvian Mining Convention, the start-up of Antamina was called ?the mining event of the year.? Antamina, one of the largestcopper-zinc mines in the world, began operations in May 2001.Augusto Baertl is Executive Chairman of Compañía Minera Antamina, the operating company. He said in a convention address that Antamina would be in full production in 2002. ?I would like to stress that Antamina is, in every respect, a highly stringent operation, as it intends to be the Peruvianmine of the future,? Baertl said. ?Antamina has set the target of being, and remaining throughout time, a model mine as to technology, environmental practices and social responsibility.? [ ] In the areas of technology and operations, Baertl noted that ?we have incorporated the best engineering design available and state-of-the art technology for mining, grinding and transportation processes, among others.? In the environmental area, he said that ?we have carried out careful environ-mental impact studies and have incorporated modern technologies and methods to control and minimize any environmental impact.? In the social field, Baertl noted that ?our relationship with neighboring communities is being developed under the premises of the social responsibility philosophy.? These include popular consultation processes, environmental committees and conciliation discussion committees. The purpose, he said, is to encourage communities located within the area of influence of the project to find and lead by themselves their path toward sustainable development, beyond the life of the operation itself.?

The tonnage produced on mechanized automated retreating longwall faces in the United States is growing rapidly. This time last year some 14 faces were operating, and in addition to that, three were known to be down looking towards revision or repairs before being placed back in service. These, it is believed, are now in service. It is estimated at the present time, therefore, that somewhere between 20 and 25 faces are being operated in the country. A survey made last year by the School of Mines, West Virginia University, indicated that longwall mining in general has been beset with a great many problems, some more serious than others. The problems that we propose to discuss here are those pertaining to roof and floor trouble in the tailgates. Longwalls are operating in this country at the present time under an overburden ranging from 200 feet to nearly 3000 feet. Main and tailgate entries are operating in panels of up to five each, with the width of the pillars between these entries varying from 20 to 50 feet. Face lengths are running from 270 feet to 670; actually a face 800 feet long should be possible. The most economical face is often spoken of as being around 450 feet.

This study examined the-feasibility of clay mineral identification and quantification by reflectance radiometry and subsequently developed a computer algorithm for deconvolution of the component spectra. Clay mineral analysis of 53 rocks and soils from Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Nevada by X-ray diffraction (XRD) compare favourably with the radiometric determinations. The application of the technique to precious metal exploration was examined at the Horse Canyon epithermal gold deposit, Cortez Mine, Nevada where low levels of illite and kaolinite are present alongside local silicification. Consequent on the success of the laboratory and field work a field portable clay mineral analysis system was designed and constructed.

An improved mine environment is the single most critical factor affecting the health and safety of workers engaged in underground coal winning. A very important subclassification of this wide field is mine ventilation, which essentially deals with 'mine atmospheric environmental control.' To ensure proper mine atmospheric environmental control, adequate quantities of air must flow through working sections in the mine. In recent years much attention has been paid to the fan and its prime movers, but the efficient use of the fan output in the workings has not received an equal amount of investigation. In mechanically ventilated mines friction losses in main airways often account for 70 to 90 percent of the total pressure loss sustained in the system. Also the leakage losses are a serious detriment to the efficiency of mine ventilation systems. It is not uncommon to loose 60 to 70 percent of the air between the fan and the last open cross-cuts due to leakage directly into the return Proper assessment of these losses in simulating and projecting complex ventilation systems is vital. Network analysis of ventilation systems is not new. Scott and Hinsly (1951) presented the detailed mathematical framework. Since then work has been done in adopting this technique to analog, and within the past few years, to digital computers. Development of computer programs to solve ventilation network problems has been reported in United Kingdom, Japan, U.S.S.R., South Africa, Germany, and the United States. The purpose of these programs is to serve as an experimental mine wherein analysis of proposed alternatives or ventilation planning can be tested. The great power of the computer as a planning tool lies in the ability to input empirical or Projected data into programs with predicting ability. But, however good a computer program is, unless fairly accurate input information is available accurately assessing the engineering factors of the ventilation system, the output will be suspect. Thus, to simulate and project mine ventilation systems, good estimates of leakage and friction factors are important. Yet, relatively little work has been done in the past three decades to determine these more realistically.

The Republic of México is the world's largest producer of celestite/strontium carbonate and natural sodium sulfate. It is also a significant producer of flourspar, barite, graphite, sulfur, feldspar, salt and gypsum. New production may be brought on stream for borates, wollastonite, garnet, calcium carbonate and others. The country covers a geographic area of approximately 2 million square kilometers (760,000 square miles), and is divided into seven geological/geomorphological provinces. Less than 20 percent has been explored in detail for either nonmetallic or metallic minerals. This leaves large areas available for the discovery of world-class industrial mineral deposits. In addition to new deposits of those minerals currently being produced, there is exploration and development potential for borates, magnesite, rare earths, nepheline syenite, heavy mineral sands and numerous others.

This paper focuses on maintenance of underground salt air curative quality using environmental friendly solutions. Possible ways to preserve its curative properties, in relation with the admissible salt air quality parameters, are analyzed. In situ investigations regarding microbiological impregnation in walls and the air inside the Romanian salt sanatorium were initiated. The results of a pilot project, which is in progress at Praid salt mine, are presented. After the end of the investigation at this site, investigations will continue in other Romanian salt mines, such as Slanic Prahova, Targu Ocna and Cacica.

A Reichert cone concentrator was installed in an aggregate plant circuit to recover the extremely fine "flour gold" known to exist in the deposit. The gold content of the bank-run gravels averages about 0.1 grams per ton (about $1.45 per ton), based upon $14.47/g (345O/ounce) gold. Tine Reichert cone, in conjunction with a conventional shaking table, re- covers in excess of 85% of the gold. A screen analysis of the gold particles shows 44.1% is -i4 microns (-200 mesh) in size. The plant operates with a two-man crew.

Investigation of mined land characteristics, evaluation of irrigation systems and evaluations by the mining industry determined that irrigation is a feasible method for aiding the revegetation of coal mined lands in the western arid and semi-arid regions (Sherman, et al. 1980). The various regions studied displayed a commonality of characteristics which enables, independent of the site or region, the recommendation of solid-set irrigation. Irrigation should be supplemental by complimenting natural precipitation and should be implemented on a temporary basis. For germination, the vegetation requires application of small amounts of water in a gentle, frequent, and timely manner. For the establishment phase of growth, moisture should be applied and stored in the soil either through pre-irrigation or deep irrigation.

INTRODUCTION The shield-driven method in Japan has been adopted widely in soft ground tunneling, namely, subway, water supply, sewer and utility tunnels, and recently this is an indispensable method in urban area. Since this method was started to adopt on a full scale from the beginning of 1960, construction achievements in length were about 830 km for 15 years until 1974 (1). According to the recent informations of the Japan Tunneling Association, the achievement in length under construction as of December, 1977, was about 350 km (2) and the extention of increase in shield-driven method can be guessed (Tab. 1). The boron review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. The United States was the world's second largest producer and the largest consumer of boron compounds during 1991. According to the US Bureau of Mines, boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the US totaled about 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st), yielding about 608 kt (670,000 st) of BO, in 1991. Total estimated value was $440 million. That level of production was equal to 1990 revised production figures. Value was greater by $37 million, however, reflecting a strengthening of boron product prices. The US continued to supply essentially all its own boron while maintaining a strong position as a source to foreign markets of sodium borate products and boric acid. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1991 remained at 1100 people, about the same level as in 1989. The Bureau of Mines estimated total world production of boron in 1991 - mineral concentrate and chemical - at about 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st). That corresponds to about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) of BO ,. World production in 1991 was about equal to revised 1990 levels. US production Mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals in 1991. US producers, in order of quantity of production, were US Borax and Chemical Corp., North American Chemical Co., and American Borate Co.

For nearly two decades, MINExpo International has held the title to the biggest show in mining. The 2012 MINExpo is expected to be the biggest yet, with nearly 1,800 exhibitors rolling out the newest equipment and services across 12 halls. From September 24 to 26 in the Las Vegas Convention Center, MINExpo will present the newest in everything from automation and robotics to safety and communications equipment to reclamation services, and much, much more. The last MINExpo, in 2008, had nearly 38,500 visitors. The show?s sponsor, the National Mining Association, expects this year will be even bigger, with more than 40,000 visitors over three days. Twenty talks on the issues facing mining today are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, but the real action will happen out on the floor. That?s where ultra haul trucks big enough to carry as much as 363 t (400 st) of rock will be assembled next to underground loaders able to lift more than 20 t (22 st) in one scoop. Caterpillar, Komatsu, Liebherr, Sandvik, Atlas Copco: all the big names in mining equipment will be there. Their massive earthmoving equipment and mining machines are the centerpiece of the show. Preassembly for the largest pieces begins on August 6, 2012.

Gentlemen : My object reads "Longwall Rapid Advance of Coal Mining in the Federal Republic of Germany". It is true that the percentage of coal obtained in your country from longwall faces, with at present 1.2, is still rather low, but it increased considerably since 1966 with 0.4 %. The coal mines of the Federal Republic of Germany ever used longwall as the classical method of coal getting. All attempts to introduce bord and pillar mining did not lead to any wider application of this method. The principal reasons, for this appear to have been: - the deeper depth of our workings, - the wish to keep working losses as low as possible and to utilize the deposits opened up by deep and therefore expensive shafts to the furthest possible degree, - the dense sequence of seams and the mutual influencing of the working points, - the high number of disturbances in the geologically much stressed deposits, - and the necessary considerations to the protection of the densely built-upon surface.

The East Side Access (ESA) Project in New York will be the largest tunneling project ever undertaken by a US railroad. The objective of the ESA project is to connect the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Main Line and Port Washington Line in Queens to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. The Project is divided into two distinctive segments: Manhattan and Queens. The Queens segment is subdivided into two major components; cut and cover tunnel construction and bored tunnels. The bored tunnels in Queens consist of five tunnels driven from a launch shaft and traverse a railway storage yard, Sunnyside Yard and terminate under the multitrack mainlines of Amtrak and LIRR at portals in the heart of Harold Interlocking where1200 trains pass every day. The soil consists of remnants of glacial till moraines and of outwash and till deposits of inter layered gravel and fines, with the occasional boulders and cobbles and with a high ground water table. It is anticipated that a Pressurized Face Machine, either slurry or Earth Pressure Balance equipped with roller disks to mine the boulders encountered as well as the mixed face, will be used to mine the tunnels. One pass reinforced concrete gasket bolted liner will be used. The cut and cover construction consists of an approximately 21.3 m (70 feet) deep excavation supported by slurry walls and jet grout columns. The slurry walls, in combination with overlapping jet grouted columns, are installed to top of rock forming a closed bathtub to control external groundwater drawdown. Maintaining the groundwater level near its original elevation is of paramount importance in order to prevent undesirable settlements and migration of groundwater that could be contaminated. Mitigation measures to prevent the migration of nearby plums are contemplated for all types of tunneling and excavation work in this site of the ESA project.

16.1.1-VENTILATION'S ROLE Importance of Ventilation and Environmental Control-Mine ventilation is necessary for the preservation of human life and for the conduct of operations involved in the underground extraction of minerals. It clearly is the most essential of the functions attendant to mining, yet it is auxiliary to the primary objective in mineral extraction. Ventilation in mining thus poses a paradox: ideally, it should be carried out with minimum interference with and cost to production operations, yet it is absolutely vital in providing adequate environmental con¬ditions to support mining. Deterioration of the atmosphere, along with rising ground pressure, imposes the ultimate constraint with depth in underground mining. Ventilation requirements and costs rise rapidly with depth. To preserve atmospheric quality under intense heat conditions, ventilation at great depths must be supplemented by air condition¬ing. Likewise, when mining at any depth under severe or excessive conditions of gas, dust or humidity, supplementary control measures must be employed. In recent years, environmental standards in mines have been raised substantially. While limits are based on human tolerance, increasing concern is being expressed for standards of human comfort. The reasons are economic, as well as humanitarian. Worker performance and longevity correlates closely with environmental quality. Further, adverse accident and insurance compensation rates are a consequence of unsatisfactory environmental conditions. No mining company can afford to be lax in its environmental and ventilation practices. Functions and Processes-Ventilation is the control of air movement, its amount and its direction. As a means of quantity control, it is one of the constituent processes of total air conditioning, the simultaneous control within prescribed limits of the quality, quantity and temperature-humidity of the air. Ventilation is the most common and most. important conditioning process employed in mines for air environmental control. In mine ventilation, air is coursed through the mine workings and openings themselves and, for auxiliary purposes, through vent tubing and ducts. Thus, many interdependencies exist between the mining system and ventilation method. In fact, the two often have evolved ,jointly, as in room-and-pillar extraction of bedded or tabular mineral deposits, such as coal. Ventilation in mines today is provided almost exclusively by large fans, although air flow may result due to natural (thermodynamic) conditions. As mines increase in depth, size and complexity, demands on the ventilation system to maintain more stringent standards of environmental quality likewise rise. On the other hand, never have the technology and resources of the mining industry to cope with environmental problems been so well developed as they are today. In spite of rising costs, it is unlikely that further progress in mine ventila¬tion and air conditioning must await technological breakthroughs. 16.1.2-NATURE OF THE MINE ATMOSPHERE Air Mixtures-Air is a gaseous mixture comprising the natural atmosphere at the surface of the earth. Each installed rock bolt costs in excess of 520.00. High cost in conjunction with the primary purpose of safety makes it only logical to install the highest quality anchors possible. Each bolt has designed support capabilities in axial, shear and fluctuating ground condition, if installed to manufacturers recommendations. The quality of anchor is not; however, only affected by material specifications, but by transportation, handling storage, installation procedure, machine performance and geology. The quality is not only affected by many variables, but reliability should be assured. Non-destructive methods of testing reliability are only available for several types of bolts.

In this chapter, the principles that determine the procedures selected to transform minerals in the ground into usable commodities are re¬viewed.a I argue here that straightforward mod¬ification of the modern general economic theory of production suffices to meet the practical needs of a mineral economist. Therefore, the chapter is largely a review of the general economic theory of production to which is added discussion of the special prob¬lems of the exhaustibility of mineral resources and the economics of finding and developing economically recoverable minerals. In many cases, propositions applicable to all industries are reviewed because they are not treated ade¬quately in prior texts. In the discussion, use is frequently made of basic concepts of differential calculus widely used in economics. However, this is supple¬mented by simpler verbal and graphical treat¬ments, so that those either untrained in the calculus or, as is often the case, whose skills have grown rusty, can still follow the discus¬sion. Where the argument depends critically on the mathematics, this is noted and the justifi¬cation for including the material is provided. In addition, an appendix outlines the critical mathematics and reviews some of the numerous books published that provide the most readable available introduction to the subject. Further¬more, mineral industries examples are used to suggest the relevance of the theory. THE RELEVANCE OF THE ECONOMICS OF PRODUCTION Three basic steps are involved in establishing the relevance of economic analysis to mineral ¬industries decision making. First, the general theory of production must be defined, and its relationship to the simpler models of production stressed in economics textbooks must be noted. Second, the critical modification-considera¬tion of the problems of discovering and devel¬oping mineral deposits-must be developed. It turns out this too involves a special case of the general theory of production. Third, the concept of an economics of exhaustible resources must be explored sufficiently to suggest why its practical relevance is doubtful (or at least far smaller than the numerous writers on the subject seem to believe). The present approach is heavily influenced by post-1945 developments in economic anal¬ysis. Particularly since World War II, economic theory has drastically changed its scope. First, stress has increased greatly upon viewing the economy as a network of intertwined markets known technically as the general equilibrium system.b In this view, not only is the economy viewed as an integrated system, but critical con¬cepts are viewed somewhat differently than was previously fashionable.
