"INTRODUCTION Located in the state of Colima, Peña Colorada is one of the largest iron ore operations in Mexico. The project is owned in equal parts by ArcelorMittal and Ternium. Though boasting a production capacity of 4.5 million tons of concentrate per year, Peña Colorada is faced with declining ore grades. In order to respond to this situation, Peña Colorada had to expand production even further. This expansion created various challenges that were overcome by the adoption and application of new technology. Examples of these technological innovations are discussed in detail in this paper and include improvements in geo-modeling, mine planning and mine operations. The successful implementation of these technologies paid for itself many times over, and has led to significant improvements in production and performance, while lowering the operating costs and reducing the variance between planning and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW Peña Colorada is a mining company which produces about 30% of the iron ore in Mexico. This project generates about 1,200 direct jobs and 3,000 indirect jobs, making a significant contribution to the local economy. Similarly, Peña Colorada invests in its local communities through numerous educational programs, scholarships, university agreements, social development, environmental agreements, etc. Peña Colorada’s operations consist of an open pit mine located in Minatitlán and a pellet plant located in the port city of Manzanillo, as shown in the location map below:TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS Most mining projects around the world typically follow the logic of “mining the next best ore”. Consequently, head grades tend to decline over the life of the mine. In the case of Peña Colorada, a decline in head grade combined with a decline in iron ore prices forced the operation to adapt to a new business environment and adopt new technologies to face these challenges. However, the first step along this process was to increase the confidence and reliability of the resource model. This task involved additional drillhole campaigns coupled with more detailed modeling techniques. Once the block model was completed, new optimization studies and production schedules were evaluated with new optimization tools that unlocked significant project value in many aspects of the mine plan. Similarly, new geotechnical studies were prepared, which provided new guidelines for pit slope design, and new technology was implemented to monitor ground movement and slope stability. The General Purpose Simulation System (GPSS) is a computer simulation language that has been used for simulations of open pit haulage operations since the 60's. It is easy to learn, simple to use, and has a block-diagram structure that is amenable to load-haul systems. However, due to its lack of flexibility, there are situations where another language should be chosen. This paper reviews the characteristics and capabilities of both GPSS and FORTFAN with regard to open pit shovel and truck simulation. The relative advantages and disadvantages are highlighted and a case study presented along with comparative results from two computer models (one written in GPSS and the other written in FORTRAN).

SOLUTION MINING Solution mining techniques present a means of extracting soluble ores, particularly such materials as salt and potash, from horizons which are not accessible by conventional mining. In the process of dissolving materials, it is evident that solution may be complete or partial. In general, the solution mining operations described in the following section relate to complete solution of the desired compound. Even though the solution of material is complete, there may be instances in which insoluble material is present to a large extent either as granular separated particles or as insoluble layers. The process required for obtaining the desired product involves access wells to reach the deposits, sufficient water supply to yield the production goals, and the development of an underground cavity. The process of solution mining, therefore, depends to a great extent on three factors: availability of a relatively pure strata or formation of salt or potash to be mined, access well or wells, and adequate control of the solutioning process so that enlargement of underground cavities can be fairly well delineated. Since halites represent the most general ores mined by this procedure, the considerations which follow are based primarily on the production of sodium or potassium chloride. The producing formations may be in the form of bedded evc~porites wherein the salt member may be some 30 to 500 ft thick or from salt domes in which great depths of salt occur. Solution mining has been carried out to depths of nearly 10,000 ft. The recovery of saturated brine from wells drilled to effect the solution-mining process leads to further processing. In many instances, the procedures are relatively simple and involve simple recrystallieation or fractional crystallieation, while in others more complex flow systems are required before a final product is obtained. The intent of this section is to provide information relative to the basic procedures for obtaining materials which are soluble in water and to acquaint the engineer with the various aspects of the overall problem which in many instances, may become quite complex and present numerous difficulties. The storage of fluids, particularly hydrocarbons, underground has proven to be a very important part of industry operations. Cavities formed in salt provide excellent storage facilities. The formation of well-defined controlled configurations of such cavities has been possible because of better understanding of the solution process, wide experience gained over nearly 30 yr, and improved technology in drilling and completing wells, surveying caverns, and the operation of numerous types of systems. Solution mining techniques will improve in the future. Many facets of the simple operation of pumping solvents and extracting valuable minerals require further study. Developments undoubtedly will occur to further the processes of mining by solution. The effect of various types of structural modification on the critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and hydrophile lipophile balances (HLB) of certain surfactants has been considered. Using the concept of effective chain length for the substituted species, an index of hydrophobicity (I) has been defined. It is hoped that such an index will allow one to choose surfactants for particular purposes in a less arbitrary fashion than heretofore.

A spherical agglomeration process for the separation of scheelite fines of less than 30 µm in very low concentration of 0.04% WO3 in a binary mixture with quartz fines of less than 30 pm has been described. A concentrate containing 14% WO, with more than 90% recoveries could be achieved by means of anionic sodium sulfo succinate collector at pH 3.5 and also with commonly used anionic sodium oleate at pH 10.5 as per the conceptual flowsheet suggested. Such a process is envisaged as commercial potential for the recovery of fine-grained scheelite present in the tailings of gold plants as found in India.

My charge is to review briefly "Coal In The Electric Utility Industry - Present and Future." Thus, I will not dwell on the overall energy picture, other than to express what most others involved in the energy picture know - we're in trouble! Several years ago, speaking to another engineering society, I said, "Much has been and yet will be said and written about the energy situation in our Country." What an understatement! The energy question has reached crisis proportions and is a top priority item at the highest level of government, Unfortunately, it will be in that situation for some time to come. Many factors created this complex problem, and we all share some of the blame. But I am perplexed when I read in the popular press that environmental factors are unrelated to the energy crisis when I know this to be untrue. In the recent past all forms of energy have been cast in the role of villain, particularly coal with its problems of surface mining, mine safety, acid water drainage, sulfur content, and a multitude of other adverse factors relating to the environment in one way or another. As you know, the sulfur situation has led to the closing of numerous mines, resulting in the lessening of our mining capacity. Today, along the Eastern Seaboard, 60 to 70 million tons of coal are displaced by imported oil, primarily to meet air standards. Even in the Midwest, utilities sitting on enormous coal reserves are converting to other fuels or hauling low sulfur coal thousands of miles from the western Mountain States. [We will hear more about this coal from another speaker on the program this morning.]

During the last decade or so great advances were made in the solvent extraction, electro winning technologies. They, combined with heap leaching, made it viable to exploit large, relatively low grade oxide copper deposits. The El Abra mine is a good example for such a deposit. Situated in Northern Chile at an elevation of about 4000m (14000 feet), 70 krn north of Calama, the El Abra deposit has been known for many years. In the early 1990's Codelco decided to sell a major holding in the deposit to international mining companies. After lengthy negotiations Cyprus Minerals finalized in June 1994 the purchase of 51% of the deposit with Codelco retaining the balance. lance. Already in 1993 Cyprus and the engineer on the project, began discussions with international materials handling companies with regards to the materials handling system required for the project. These early discussions were considered critical for this fast track project. Immediately after the notice to proceed with the project, several companies were invited to submit competitive conceptual proposals for that portion of the material handling system which was to transport crushed and treated ore from the plant to the leach pad and build the leaching heaps at a rate of up to 150 000 tons per day. A supplier was selected. Additional studies were made for the conveyor system from the mine to the fine crushing plant. Due to the extremely rugged terrain and high altitude at the mine, a decision was made to locate the plant and the leaching operations 15 km east of the mine at an elevation of 3400m. In July 1994 the supplier started the conceptual engineering with a design team at the engineer's San Francisco office. The undertaking was unique in the sense that the supplier's engineering team was integrated into the project for the duration of the conceptual engineering. The open and continuous communication greatly contributed to the success of the design work.

Feasibility studies being conducted to investigate the use of electromagnetic methods for insitu volumetric heating of oil shales will be discussed. A two dimensional numerical model which describes eletromagnetic heating of oil shales is outlines. The model includes equations for temperature, pressure, saturations, chemical reactions, mass conservation, and source terms. The gases are all assumed to form one bulk species and the oil is assumed to remain in liquid form. The chemical reactions include pryolysis of kerogen and char, release of bound water, coking, and decomposition if carbonates. Porosity and permeability are dynamic functions of the organic materials. Calibration of the model is accomplished by comparison of the model results with experimental data obtained by IITRI. Nonlinear relationships for viscosity, thermal properties, and source terms and used as inputs to the model. A finite difference approximation to the differential equations is derived and solved using Newton's iteration technique. For the cases studied the solutions are quite stable. Numerical resultes are included and a preliminary study of the optimization of the heating process is presented.

By-products are of greater importance in lead and zinc mining than in any of the other major base metals. While I think most mining people would accept that statement, you would probably get some widely varying estimates when attempting to quantify the value of by-products in lead and zinc mining. We are now able to do this with our lead-zinc mine cost model. This model was originally developed as a zinc mine cost model to help us forecast long-term zinc supply and price as part of a study we completed in late 1979 entitled "Zinc - The Next Decade". Before demonstrating the importance of by-product revenue to lead- zinc mines, let me first explain how the cost model was constructed. I will discuss the model as it was originally constructed - as a zinc mine cost model. It has subsequently been expanded to include lead only mines and now can Be run either as a zinc or a lead mine cost model.

Dilute-phase pneumatic conveying has been used in the mining industry since the 1920s. It has primarily been used for the hoisting of coal and salt ores, and as a transportation medium for backfill material. More recently there have been investigations into a wider variety of applications, which this paper addreses. The paper will point out some deficiencies in the system. It 1s not the "champion" of the mining industry, but rather an excellent srste?1 with a variety of applications that may not have been studied m enough detail. The most imaginative applications to the Redpath Pneumatic Conveying System have been initiated by persons needing an innovative application to a specific predicament.

Subsidence measurement methods, applied over the thick and steep seam mining in the Rocky Mountains Region of Western Canada are described. The studies to date indicate that two new subsidence monitoring techniques appear to be the most suited methods for our conditions. The computerized telemetry and aerial photogrammetry systems are being tested for the reliability of the systems during the winter months within the network of laser surveying over the workings of the new hydraulic mine. The site particulars and the mining method of the concerned area have been described briefly. The observation over the old hydraulic mine indicate that panels adjacent to each other do not obey identical subsidence phenomenon.

Vibratory or oscillatory conveyors can be found in all types of industry, handling virtually any granular bulk material, often at elevated temperatures. These conveyors can be combined with other process functions, such as screening, cooling, drying and dewatering, while conveying. Although construction and installation is relatively simple, the engineering and design analysis of the vibratory mechanics is fairly complex. This paper will discuss the basic types of vibratory conveyors and the analysis of the material movement along the carrying trough.

Many of the problems that occur in the preparation plant originate from practices in the mine. Impurities in raw coal can be in the seam itself or from extraneous material taken in mining from the roof or bottom. In the case of underground mines, the choice of mining equipment will affect the size consist and the amount of extraneous material included with the coal. Also, governmental regulations concerning the degree of rock dusting, gobbing underground, and cleanup have increased the dirt in raw coal. Sulfur dioxide emission standards, on the other hand, are pressuring the coal industry to clean coal more thoroughly. Coal supplied for coking purposes is nearly all upgraded by washing, while for the largest market, electric power generation, a high proportion is shipped as a raw product with processing, in whole or in part, only necessary when excess impurities are mined with the coal. This chapter will deal primarily with plants that process or wash coal to some extent (Fig. 1) and only incidentally with mines shipping raw run-of-mine coal crushed to a top size of, usually, 51 to 102 mm (2 to 4 in.), with little, if any, other treatment.

This paper presents numerical and experimen¬tal results dealing with the application of ferric ion oxidation of uranium in acidic media. Conclusions are derived from matching numerical results to experimental data taken on one-dimensional laboratory leaches using ore from a South Texas Coastal plain deposit. Since the numerical results can be made quite general, we are able to extract and quantify the effects of oxidant concentration, flow velocity, mass transfer, chemical kinetics, and competitive oxidant consumers (pyrite and molybdenite) on the experimental results. Our results suggest that the leaching of uranium is a mass transfer controlled while that of pyrite is kinetically controlled.

Newmont has a large integrated operation in Northern Nevada with numerous mines, stockpiles, and processing facilities. There are over ninety defined metallurgical ore types and over sixty defined gold recovery process options. To take better advantage of the available synergies, a complete Nevada wide mine plan and process model along with a mixed Integer and Linear Programming optimization tool has been developed and implemented. This system is maintained and operated by a Nevada Planning Group. Standard in-house planning software tools and methods have been implemented at all mine sites. While increasing the effectiveness of planning in Nevada, these changes have allowed a significant reduction in overall Mine Engineering staff.

High Speed 2 (HS2) mandated that Building Information Modelling (BIM) processes be implemented during design and construction. Gall Zeidler Consultants (GZ) was responsible for developing the BIM Models for the portals, tunnels, and cross passages of the of the 16 km-long Chiltern twin-bore Tunnel. In addition, GZ developed the GBR for the Chiltern Tunnels and incorporated the relevant information into the Project’s BIM framework. This paper presents the implemented BIM framework, describes the modelling approach, and discusses the advantages and challenges of implementing BIM, particularly how BIM improved interface coordination and how BIM was used in feasibility assessments of different construction options.

Japan has produced 14-16 million tons of coal per year in the past several years. About half of the production comes from eight coal mines in the Ishikari coal field, Hokkaido. Most of the gassy coal mines are in this field and the average mining depth of these coal mines has already attained about 700 m from the surface. Therefore, most of the coal mines have suffered from occurrences of coal and gas outbursts. To prevent outbursts and to reduce ventilation air, gas drainage has been carried out at all of these coal mines and these have had successful results. However, the methods of gas drainage differ from mine to mine. In this report, an outline of the main methods of gas drainage are described.

Canada is a major producer of chrysotile asbestos. In fact, Canada accounts for approximately one third of the world chrysotile asbestos production. Deposits are mined and the fiber processed in Québec, in British Columbia on the West Coast and in Newfoundland in the Atlantic region. Foremost among the Canadian provinces is obviously Québec. Some 85% of Canadian deliveries come from mines located in the Eastern Townships, a region which lies along the southshore of the St. Lawrence River, between Montreal and Québec City. At the heart of this vast territory, five (5) mining towns make up what is called the Québec asbestos region. Total capacity of the five (5) mining producers of Québec is about 1 366 000 tonnes.

In 2012, the estimated value of mineral production increased in the United States for the third consecutive year. Production and prices increased for most industrial mineral commodities mined in the United States. While production for most metals remained relatively unchanged, with the notable exception of gold, the prices for most metals declined. Minerals remained fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels, including mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. Minerals? contribution to the GDP increased for the second consecutive year. Trends in other sectors of the domestic economy were similar to those in mineral production and consumption rates (Table 1). After continued decline following the 2008-2009 recession, the construction industry began to show signs of improvement late in 2011 and throughout 2012, with increased production and consumption of cement, construction sand and gravel, crushed stone and gypsum, mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction.

The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines Fimiston Open Pit is mining through a dense network of disused level workings and stopes of varied sizes and orientations. This study investigated the interaction between underground workings and the pit slope stability, in particular for the ultimate pit depth of over 600 metres. Parametric analyses were conducted on the structural and rock mass properties in order to provide realistic input. Several cases in both 2D and pseudo 3D using UDEC were modeled and analyzed to investigate the performance of the rock mass at various mining stages. The concept of equivalent property factor was also introduced to model the 3D behavior using 2D models. Based on the modelling results, the possible failure mechanisms and deformation of the pit walls were assessed. Factors of safety have been derived for the pit slope at different mining stages using the strength reduction technique. The modelling results agree well with pit performance monitoring results to date. The concept and results presented in this paper could be a useful reference for operations with similar circumstances and stress regimes.
