Energy West Mining Co. (EWMC) has implemented a geologic program for improving stability and support requirements along deep two-entry longwall gateroads at its Deer Creek Mine operations located near Huntington, UT. Together with geotechnical monitoring and concurrent review of mine seismicity in cooperation with MTI staff, it has become possible to improve longwall layout designs for two seam extraction of the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon seams. The geologic program consists of surface and in-mine exploration drilling, surface and in-mine geologic mapping, rock mechanics testing and detailed measurements of changes in depositional and structural conditions during development of every longwall gateroad. The geotechnical program consists of underground measurements at seven locations in two neighboring mining districts located in the Hiawatha and Blind Canyon coal seams under moderate to deep cover. Within the last five years, additional measurements, including data on seismicity and face conditions, have been incorporated into the data collection program for verifying the in situ coal strength and load transfer mechanisms for improving two-seam designs and support systems.

The stress-relief method for the determination of the ground stress tensor is a common procedure in rock mechanics. In particular, the method of applying gauges to the end of a borehole is a well-established technique. Investigations, both experimental and theoretical, indicate that large discrepancies can exist in the determination of the ground stress tensor when the rock substance is not the ideal elastically isotropic material assumed for the reduction of data. The purpose of this paper is to extend the analysis of strain gauges applied to the end of a borehole to rock material more closely approximate to an orthotropic substance.

23.1-SOURCE, POWER-SYSTEM ELEMENTS A. J. T HUM Basic considerations in providing power for mine production and collateral operations are: 1. Mining operations of any size normally use electric motors for driving all equipment except mobile service units. 2. The electricity for power may be purchased or self-generated, depending on the location, size and specific operating circumstances of the individual property. 3. The major elements of the power system will be the source, either an incoming transmission line from a utility in the case of purchased power or the power plant if self-generated. Energy for the power plant may be water, hydrocarbon fuels, waste heat or nuclear, which will govern the type of prime mover selected. 4. The electricity normally is generated in the form of alternating current and must be distributed to the points of usage. This usually requires a primary substation for transformation to suitable voltages and secondary substations at points of usage throughout the operations, The power is delivered from the primary to the secondary substations over transmission lines or cables, depending on distances, voltages and local conditions. 5. At the points of use, there will be starting and protective devices for each motor. In some instances, direct current will be needed and rectifiers of various types can be used to provide it. 6. The entire electrical system requires suitable switching and protective devices to prevent damage to the equipment in case of power failues or faults; also, in most cases, sufficient metering to establish the demand and amount of electrical energy consumed. 23.2-PURCHASED POWER A. J. THULI 1. Where public-utility or government-generated power is available, it usually is advantageous for the mine owner to purchase rather than generate. Purchased power generally will be cheaper and more reliable than operating a small generating plant except in some cases where waste heat is available as the source of energy and can be used to supply all or a portion of the power requirements. 2. If it is decided to purchase power, the owner usually must participate in the cost of constructing the connecting line from the closest existing utility line to his point of usage. If the connected load is less than 1,000 lip, it probably is best to let the utility provide the primary substation. For larger connected loads the owner can obtain a more favorable "primary voltage" rate if he provides the primary substation to receive the incoming power and transform it to the distributing and usage voltages. 3. The cost of purchased power usually is made up of a demand charge, deter¬mined by the maximum amount of power the customer takes during any 15-min period throughout a month, and a graduated energy charge for the kilowatt-hours consumed-that is, so much for the first block of energy based on the demand,

The concept of the system is to minimize costly unscheduled breakdowns of equipment by replacing components earlier than their "life" expectancy. Periodic unit services are scheduled according to pre-set constraints. Service sheets are generated by matching a job and component master listing based on assigned cyclic component lives. The system can provide accountability of all man-hours reported and history information can be selectively retrieved. By reducing unscheduled equipment shutdowns, this system allows for better utilization of manpower and an overall improvement in equipment reliability and availability.

The Nonel Primadet is a non-electric blasting initiation device. The system incorporates the safety advantages of a cap and fuse system with the precision blasting afforded by electrical blasting caps. Each unit is made up of a delay blasting cap factory-crimped to a Nonel® shock tube lead line. The delay elements in the blasting caps are manufactured in both millisecond and long period series. There are 16 periods available in both series - period 0 through period 15. The units are manufactured in 12', 16', and 20' lead lengths. The hollow shock tube is made of surlyn plastic and it is coated on the inside with a reactive material. The powder train has a density of only 1/10 grain per linear foot of tube. A typical blast round is timed precisely the same way it would be with electrical caps. After the round has been timed and loaded, the tube leads are gathered in convenient bunches and tied into a detonating cord trunkline. The Nonel® tube bunches are initiated by the output of an 18 grain per foot detonating cord trunkline. Once initiated, the Nonel® shock tube will reliably propagate at 1800 meters per second. The energy from this shock front initiates the delay elements in each delay cap. The shock tube is inert to electrical energies, including; stray current from AC/DC power sources, as well as, electrostatic discharges. The tube is also inert to initiation by impact. The system has proven to be particularly advantageous in both tunnel and shaft blasting applications. The major advantages in using the Nonel® system in this type of work are: 1) faster and easier tie-in techniques through the use of bunch-blasting. 2) electrical power can be left on during loading and tying-in. a. electrical lights can be turned on at the working face - better lighting facilitates loading and tying-in. b. electrical pumps can continue to function throughout loading and priming procedures (this is particularly advantageous in shaft work with water problems). 3) down-time due to approaching electrical storms is minimized. 4) increased overall efficiency in the blasting cycle: a. it is easier to train a man in the proper use of the system. b. fewer missed holes per round. c. less time required for tie-in. 5) safety-advantage--The system is not susceptible to involuntary initiation from extraneous electrical energies.

Slope stability analysis plays an integral role in the design of various mining applications including waste dumps, heap leach piles, solution ponds, and tailings dams. Generally, limit equilibrium analysis using one of the several prevalent approaches is considered adequate. The density, saturation, and shear strength parameters of the materials forming the slope affect the failure mode and the calculated factor of safety (FS) against sliding. These parameters are generally based on laboratory tests. Field practices and construction procedures are often not completely simulated in the laboratory for various reasons (e.g. equipment limits, time and budget restraints, etc.). This paper presents a holistic assessment of slope stability analysis as practiced in mining applications, using example data from multiple heap leach projects. A sensitivity analysis is presented for variations in material properties, data interpretation, and computation methods. For each step in the design process, the possible variations in parameter values were identified and then used to perform traditional and probabilistic stability analyses. This simple, cradle-to-grave-type approach is used to evaluate the reliability of an example design, and the combined impact of multiple uncertainties on the factor of safety. Example Study The issue of addressing uncertainty in geotechnical design has been discussed in depth by numerous authors (Duncan 2000; Christian 2004; Whitman 1984; Christian et al. 1993). One may ignore the uncertainties involved in a design, take a conservative approach, rely on observational methods (Peck 1969), or attempt to quantify the uncertainty. Geotechnical projects in general, may include a combination of these methods. For important structures, such as heap leach pads, it is critical that sources of uncertainty in the stability analysis be acknowledged early on and considered in the overall design approach. As with any project, economics and other physical constraints, such as space limitation, often do not always allow for an overly-conservative, robust design. In an effort to quantify uncertainty and provide a sense of level of confidence in the safety and reliability of a design, probabilistic methods have been developed and implemented in many slope stability software packages. Reliability methods are often used in the design of open pit mine slopes, but not as commonly in designing heap leach pads and waste dumps. As an example, the stability analysis of a copper heap leach project is presented here to evaluate the effects of multiple sources of uncertainty and differing methods of data interpretation. Some of the parametric values, or the variation therein, are assumed on the basis of actual data from multiple heap leach projects, included in the paper as well. A generic representation of the example case study is shown in Figure 1. As depicted in the cross-section, the ultimate height of the design is 114 m (measured from the crest to the toe). The overall slope of the heap leach pad is 1.88 horizontal to 1 vertical (1.88H:1V), or 28°. The slope benches are considered in the overall slope. The example leach pad is founded on alluvial, colluvial and residual soils overlying weathered limestone. The ore to be placed on the pad is characterized as poorly graded gravel (GP) with average fines content (percent passing #200 sieve) of 4%. The liner subgrade is low permeability (fine) soil. The cover or the drainage material, placed directly above the geomembrane (between the liner and the ore), is crushed ore in this case. The phreatic surface was assumed to be 1 m above the base liner, which is what the collection system over the liner is typically designed for. [ ] In heap leach pads, typically, Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) or High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) is used as the base liner. The decision is based on the elongation, strength and other requirements of the application as well as economic considerations. In this example study, the base liner was 80-mil single-side textured LLDPE. FIELD INVETIGATION AND SAMPLING When selecting appropriate values for the input parameters of the stability analysis, the level of uncertainty in the data and the assumptions that are made must be clearly identified and considered in the design. This concept has been emphasized through an extensive number of publications regarding geotechnical uncertainty and reliability (Christian et al. 1994; Duncan 2000; Christian 2004). The primary source of uncertainties involved in slope stability analysis for mining applications is inadequate geotechnical investigation, often lacking in a thorough assessment of in-situ material characterization and sampling disturbances. To emphasize this point, some background information is presented here. The tradeoff between the costs of a thorough site investigation versus the risks of design uncertainty has long been a challenging management decision in geotechnical projects. For mine sites, significant investment is typically made in exploration and estimating mineral resources and the geology of a mine site is often more thoroughly documented than other types of geotechnical projects. Nevertheless, the engineering properties of the soil and rocks relevant to slope stability receive less emphasis. Baecher and Christian (2003) observed that the areas of geotechnical concern, such as slopes and waste disposal facilities, are usually associated with mine costs rather than revenue, and therefore, significantly less money is devoted to their site characterization and laboratory testing. In this paper, the problems which occurred on introduction of dense medium cyclone coal washing in Australia are reviewed together with the subsequent measures taken to obtain a satisfactory magnetite. Specification and testing of magnetite for exploration, quality control and in-plant check purposes is discussed. The disposition of Australian magnetite deposits in relation to the main coal producing areas is examined, and comments are made on the economics of mining, milling and beneficiating magnetite for coal preparation uses alone. Future trends in the Australian Coal Industry are predicted, and the need for a planned approach for the future is demons traced.

A review is given of the present applications of random sets and integral geometry in fragmentation and liberation models of ores and minerals. Although attempts have ben made in the past to apply such mathematical techniques to the comminution of solids, it is shown that it would not result in major progress. In liberation modelling, it is demonstrated that the approach can lead to fruitful results. Following a recent paper by Davy (1984), a model of liberation prediction is developped, which can be calibrated far ore texture and breakage using image analyzers. The model is demonstrated for the case of a Poisson polyhedra ore texture and monodisperse fragment size. The model enables to predict the complete composite particle distribution, and is thus valuable for integration of ore breakage models with minerals separation models.

The deformation, failure, and filling characteristics of a caving roof in the initial and normal mining stages of a pitching oblique longwall mining area are analyzed using large-scale threedimensional physical-similitude experiments and numerical calculations to study the characteristics of roof fracture and migration in a steeply dipping seam. The results show that the roof fracture development has evident sequential and spatial characteristics. Among them, immediate roof breaking in different parts of the mining area shows difference in time and space. The failure sequence of the immediate roof in different areas changes with the mining; unique regional stability evolution characteristics are observed in the suspended immediate roof simultaneously, resulting in its significant regional stability on the goaf filling.

In the last two decades, acid iron ore pellets have established their predominant position as the iron-bearing burden material for blast furnace ironmaking in North America. It is a general practice that pelletization plants are asked to produce pellets of certain chemical composition and in a narrow range of sizes. A minimum amount of fines created during handling and transportation is desirable. Such a requirement is often expressed indirectly by the minimum compression load causing a pellet to break. The behavior of pellets inside a blast furnace, of course, is very important for a smooth and efficient operation. Before its melting in the lower part of a blast furnace during this period of several hours the behavior of pellets depends on their properties after induration as well as conditions inside each furnace. Among properties of indurated pellets, the ability to maintain their physical integrity in the burden and to be reducible are most important. To maintain the integrity of pellets (i.e., minimal low temperature breakdown, swelling and softening) so that there will be adequate overall permeability for certain wind rate and local permeability for gas/solid contact for reduction. A higher reducibility will moderate the adverse effects of swelling and softening and contribute to a smooth operation and efficient use of heat and reductants in a blast furnace. An article devoted to the relationships between the quality of iron ore pellets and blast furnace practice has been published elsewhere(1); therefore, no further discussion is needed here. The mechanism of strengthening of iron ore pellets during firing has been the subject of investigation of many authors(2). There is no doubt that the bridging of the growing hematite grains, particularly starting with magnetite concentrates, is very significant in the production of strong pellets. Recently, there are many reports from blast furnace operators that they have noticed the adverse effect of LTB in their plants. It is obvious that the strength derived from bridged hematite grains may disappear when hematite is converted to magnetite with thorough breakdown of grain structures. It is suggested that some other strengthening mechanism may be required in order to improve the LTB index of acid pellets. The influence of porosity on both compression strength and reducibility follows regular patterns. It has been suggested(1) that the amount of liquid slag in pellets during firing determines to a large extent the porosity, hence, indirectly, strength and reducibility.

During the past decade, a general awareness of the need for and subsequent development of increased safety in United States coal mines has taken place. Government and industry alike were stimulated into accelerating their actions through unacceptable accident statistics and costs (in terms of human misery dollar values). Those of us who work in the United States coal industry are aware of the development of governmental controls on nine safety. Both Federal and State regulations have placed increased responsibility upon mine owners and operators to insure a safe working environment and to provide training for miners. No other industrial group of workers has received such attention or, in our opinion, deserves it more.

In the process of mining coal today, our greatest asset, the coal miner, is faced with the indirect and direct consequence of underground mining operations. The indirect considerations may be the rank of the coal seam, the amount of overburden, geological factors, seam permeability and cracks. The introduction of newer, bigger and faster coal-producing face equipment having the capability to cut or rip through the bedding planes, cleats and micropores of the coal seam brings about rapid liberation of gas accompanied by greater concentrations of coal dust, has exerted a direct consideration and greater demand upon mine ventilation systems and dust control. The purpose of mine ventilation is to provide sufficient pure air to the miners working underground and to dilute, render harmless, and carry away all the dangerous and noxious gases. The mining operations which create coal dust are cod cutting, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, dumping and movement of face equipment. The created fine dust causes the propagation of explosions. When quantities of coal dust with no methane present are raked in a sufficiently dense cloud in the presence of a source of ignition, an explosion is possible.

Since the critical role of oxygen in xanthate flotation of sulphides was established (1) subsequent studies have been concerned mainly with the galena-xanthate system. It is therefore surprising to find at the conclusion of a comprehensive review of the topic by Granville, Finkelstein and Allison (2) that it was not possible for them to draw unequivocable conclusions on the mechanism of xanthate adsorption. It was apparent that some new advances were likely if systems other than galena-xanthate (Pbs/x-) were examined. (2) Specifically a less reactive sulphide such as ZnS may interact with flotation reagents at a slower rate than PbS and more information per unit time gathered. Again ZnS is far less reactive electrochemically than PbS or stated equivalently, it is a poorer semiconductor than PbS. More importantly, the ability of ZnS to act as a semi-conductor can be controlled photochemically rather than by direct doping reactions for which it is difficult to assess the uniformity of doping. Thus the conductivity of ZnS can be made the same as that of PbS by irradiating the ZnS with ultraviolet light at circa 360 n.m. (3)

Roll crushers had been used in the past ahead of existing milling systems in order to obtain additional production from such mills in both the mining and the cement industries. Historically, a roll crusher as a preliminator to a ball mill has been used for a number of industrial mineral applications. Flowsheets, from Taggars(1) show systems for fluorspar, graphite, lead and zinc to name a few, which are shown in Figures 1 to 4. These units applied, (in some cases still in service), prior to 1950 and as early as the 1920's, were of two general types, rigid rolls and spring rolls. The rigid rolls were phased out in favor of the spring rolls. The spring force related to the linear inch width of the rolls, ranged from 500 to 50,000 lbs/linear inch(1) on units up to 90" diameter. With choke feeding, the rolls were spread against the spring force during crushing keeping the system under high pressure to obtain high effectiveness.

Nepheline syenite is a light-colored feldspathic rock that is used primarily as an addition to the glass batch. It is also used in ceramics and as an industrial filler. Composed essentially of the soda and potash feldspars and nepheline, nepheline syenite contributes needed alkalis and alumina to the glass composition. And because it contains a higher proportion of these oxides per unit weight, it is a formidable competitor for feldspar in northeastern North America and parts of western Europe. Nepheline-bearing rocks are not uncommon on a world scale, but few are able to be beneficiated to a composition sufficiently low in iron to be used in the making of glass. Nepheline can only form in an environment deficient in silica. Hence free silica, as quartz, is always absent in the primary mineral assemblage. Biotite, hornblende and magnetite are usually present as minor accessory minerals, and zircon, garnet, muscovite, and apatite may be present as trace minerals. Nepheline syenite is produced for glass, ceramics, and filler markets by Unimin Canada Limited at Blue Mountain, in south- eastern Ontario. Unimin acquired the former Indusmin and IMC properties from Falconbridge Ltd. in 1990. Elkem Nefelin AIS commenced production of similar products from Stjernoy Island in northern Norway in 1961. Unimin acquired this company in 1992. Nepheline has also been a byproduct of apatite mining on the Kola Peninsula for many years, and in 1951 the production of alumina from nepheline was commenced in a plant near St. Petersburg (Leningrad). There are now four plants in the Russian Republic, two smaller ones based on nepheline tailings from apatite mining and two larger and more recent plants in central Siberia using other nepheline resources. All four of these plants are integrated complexes that produce alumina for the subsequent production of aluminum metal, sodium and potassium carbonates, and portland cement. Roofing granules are produced by the 3M Company from a nepheline rock in Arkansas. In 1980 and 1989, trial shipments of nepheline syenite were recorded from new sources in Brazil and western Turkey respectively. Recent interest is also recorded for deposits in China, Saudi Arabia, and British Columbia.

An upgrade to Vale?s existing Clarabelle dual-pinion, semiautogenous (SAG) mill was completed by the power and automation technology company, ABB. The mill is used to reduce the size of the ore at the company?s nickel and copper mines in the Sudbury area. The project was completed on time and on budget with an excellent safety record. Located in Ontario about 400 km (250 miles) north of Toronto, Vale?s Sudbury operations are primarily underground nickel sulfide mines, with integrated mining, milling, smelting and refining operations. One of the characteristics of Clarabelle Mill is to accept nickel-copper ore from various sources and companies and to produce a nickel-copper concentrate and copper concentrate for further processing. The size of the ore is further reduced in SAG mills, rod mills and ball mills, where all milling is done wet.

Hydrocyclone separators are widely used in various industrial applications in the oil and mining industries to sort, classify, and separate solid particles or liquid droplets within liquid suspensions, which are considered to be multiphase systems. Numerous valuable studies have been conducted in recent years to investigate the flow fields inside hydrocyclones. However, much of the information regarding the performance of cyclones in the literature has limitations and much of it cannot be considered as completely applicable to most real-world applications; many of the studies investigated the flow fields within extremely simplified hydraulic designs that are not representative of the complex geometries or large sizes which are typical in industry. Therefore, in this study, the two-phase flow system inside the actual hydraulic geometry of a milling circuit hydrocyclone is explored with the aid of both computational and experimental techniques (particle image velocimetry (PIV)). More specifically, the flow field with an air core has been investigated. In addition, the air-liquid two phases flow in a hydrocyclone might cause some challenges on both the computational and experimental sides. Two turbulence models are utilized in the numerical calculations: the Reynolds stress model and large eddy simulation. The computational studies are mainly focused on the local flow behavior and the prediction of the dimensions and shape of the air core. Different section planes of hydrocyclone are selected as planes of interest and divided into several fields of view (FOV) for PIV measurements. Two-dimensional experimental velocity vector maps are obtained in each of the fields of view. The computational results are validated globally using pressure and flow rate readings at the boundaries and locally by comparison to the PIV velocity vector maps and profiles.

With the continued downward pressure on coal selling prices, mine management must make its operations as efficient as possible. The problem is the same one throughout the mineral industries, streamlining operations to maintain competitive mining costs (Born, 1991). There has been a great deal of research into better using production manpower. But the story is different for operations support personnel. Traditionally, planning man-power requirements are done annually, with modifications to the operating plan occurring generally quarterly. On the other hand, the demands on manpower are often dynamic, being responsive to changing productivity levels ,mine conditions (including water influx, bad roof, poor floor)and unanticipated project requirements (responses to machine breakdowns or a new section setup requirement because of a drop in coal quality in another area). Such changes may impact the manpower structure significantly. At times they may cause serious labor relations problems concurrently. Realignments and the generation of instability in the workforce because of active job switching (bidding) are a result. Most responses by coal operators are reactive rather than proactive, a situation that could be mollified by more accurate and detailed planning of predictable manpower requirements. A manpower planning tool is needed that takes into consideration such things as changing productivity levels and conditions as manhour requirements for different work areas are planned, rather than blindly allocated through traditional staffing modes.

The processing of residues derived from various operations in the mining and metallurgical industry for by-product recovery is becoming more prevalent. A principal target for by-product recovery is flue dust produced by conventional smelting operations. Flue dust from zinc smelters has been processed for many years for the recovery of cadmium (1,2). The cadmium recovery technique which consists of a selective sulfation roast, followed by a water leach and zinc dust cementation, produces a lead cake residue (see chemical analysis in Table I), which consists primarily of lead sulfate.
