Use of radio frequency identification (RFID) technology to solve informational needs in isolated and restricted underground mining environments will be reviewed, giving specifications of some past and currently available systems. The advantages and disadvantages of using various frequencies, system configurations, and specific components, including their construction standards and capability, will be discussed. The remaining challenges to more widespread use of RFID systems for personnel and vehicle tracking will be identified, and recommendations concerning operating environment capabilities will be detailed. Finally, the ultimate requirements for maintaining system integrity during and following a coal mine emergency will be discussed.

INTRODUCTION The Macassa Division of Lac Minerals Ltd. is a high grade gold mine that has been operating in Kirkland Lake, Ontario for the past 51 years. It produces approximately 120,000 tonnes of ore per year, averaging approximately 18.7 grams per tonne (0.45 ounzes per ton) of gold. Over the years, the ore body has been developed to a point where mining takes place below the 1,220 m (4,000 feet) elevation and 1,830 m (6,000 feet) west of the original shaft. The mine is currently serviced by two surface and two winze shafts. (Figure 1). The ore body extends below the 1,930 m (6,400 feet) Level which is the bottom of the existing mining operation. An ambitious underground exploration program has substantially increased these reserves. Concurrent with the discovery of greater reserves, has been rapidly escalating mining costs, particularly labour which constituted 66% of the total cost in 1981. These costs continued to escalate as the major proportion of mining was carried out to the west, far away from the existing hoisting systems. This required three lift hoisting for men, materials and ore. I n addition to the increased travel time and ore handling expense, increased humidity and temperature and ventilation and compressed air losses have added to the inefficiency of the operations. As a result, studies were initiated in 1980 to assess the future of the Macassa operation.

Exposure to the microscopic particles in diesel engine exhaust can lead to serious health problems, including the incidence of cancers, heart disease and increased susceptibility to respiratory ailments such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma. In Australia, mining companies and state government authorities are actively responding to this major occupational health and safety issue. Their initiatives place considerable emphasis on routine monitoring of diesel particle matter (DPM) exhaust emissions, both for engine benchmarking and as a part of routine engine maintenance. Implementation strategies follow two complementary paths: determination of individual engines? emission signatures combined with periodic engine re-certification; and co-operatively agreed industry-government engine maintenance programs, which are subject to audit. Both strategies place heavy reliance on real-time measurement of DPM concentrations in engine exhaust, using ruggedized instrumentation, mainly based on laser light scattering photometry. Adding value to this cooperative approach, industry has also collectively funded a government agency to design and manage a database, into which the results of all-routine DPM testing can be uploaded directly by individual mines. This win-win outcome is a great example of how cooperative action between governments and industry can deliver the goods: in this case, a safer working environment, more efficient energy use and the capacity to benchmark performance with industry peers.

The Homes take Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota has a yearly production of 1,868,741 tons of ore produced from horizontal cut-and-fill stopes and timber cut-and-fill stopes. This production, in addition to the necessary development (drifts and raises), requires 5,168,271 feet of drilling annually. The rock for the most part consists of quartz; mica schist; and cummingtonite schist; and must be considered as relatively hard. Penetration rates average about 15 inches per minute using an operating air pressure of 100 psi. The rock is tough, rather than brittle, and dulling occurs quite rapidly. The average regrind period is approximately 19 feet per regrind using a 1-7/16 inch carbide bit. At the present time, all drilling is accomplished with 2-5/8 inch bore airleg mounted drills, and 2-3/4 inch and 3-inch diameter bore -stopers (raising only). These machines are all direct striking, with 4-1/4 inch chucks. 7/8-inch hexagonal carbon drill steel with forged collars are used in conjunction with 1-7/16 inch multi-use, threaded, carbide bits. 62,793 rods, and 16,234 bits are used to maintain the yearly production. The number of rods noted are the rods that were sent: underground, both new and reconditioned.

SUMMARY The productivity of drill and blast methods of mining in hard rock is limited by the cyclic nature of the operation, and a plateau of performance has been reached, even with the most advanced equipment developments. Higher mine operating costs and lower metal prices have more than ever generated the need for breaking through these productivity barriers. After initial field testing The Robbins Company has designed and manufactured, on a joint venture basis with Mount Isa Mines, Ltd., Australia, a prototype "Mobile Miner" for continuous cutting of hard rock. This paper describes the cutting concept, the initial application of a completed 1,156 m (3792 ft.) long 14% decline, actual performance and delay analysis, developmental modifications, anticipated performances of a fully developed machine, and possible future applications. The existing main mine ventilation system for the production areas to the Kiruna mine was constructed during the period 1994-1996 and extended with 4 more shafts, including fan stations, for the sea ore body from 1997-1998. Two papers have been presented from this project at the 7th US Mine Ventilation Symposium in 1995 and at The 6th International Mine Ventilation Congress in 1997. In 2005, pre-studies for a new main haulage level were started. Different haulage methods were presented including ventilation systems. The pre-studies showed that the existing ventilation system, including fan stations for the new main haulage system in the production area, could be extended. However, a new system for the central area, which was not in the initial investment program, would be needed. In the beginning of 2006, a decision was made to design a new ventilation system for the central area to make it possible to get air to the development work for the new main haulage system, independent of the haulage method. This system was operational by the beginning of 2007. The new main haulage system, which was decided to be located on level 1365 m, only requires that the existing shafts be extended - the capacity of the fans seems to be enough. However, the problem is that the existing level 1045 m and the new level 1365 m have to be in operation in parallel for approximately 7-8 years. The challenge for the moment is determining how to ventilate the production areas for both levels at the same time, while simultaneously constructing the extended system. This paper will describe the problems associated with the extension of the main ventilation system and some potential solutions for these problems. The new main haulage level 1365 m must be in operation by 2012.

Cable shovel requires continuous monitoring through excavation to achieve reliability, longevity and economic usage. The operating environment and the stress and deformation fields on the front-end assembly must continually be monitored to avoid random fatigue failure. In this paper, the authors advance frontiers of cable shovel reliability through real-time stress and deformation monitoring during excavation. Cable shovel boom stress and deformation analysis are developed using a combination of flexible and rigid body approach. A virtual prototype is developed to simulate the cable shovel excavation in oil sands and to examine the motion, stress and local deformation of the boom. A numerical example is used examine cable shovel boom durability using stress and deformation fields simulation. The results show that stress and deformation are large around the joint between the upper body and the boom. The simulation of the effect of material properties on boom deformation shows that the deformation is larger in hard formation than in soft formation. The study provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

"Hecla Limited is nearing completion of the Lucky Friday Mine No.4 shaft located in Mullan, ID. The shaft is collared at the 4940 level of the mine and will have a final mine level depth of 8620, or 9,590 feet below the surface. After reaching the 7400 mine level the shaft encountered ground deformation higher then allowed for in the design for a circular shaft excavation and concrete lining. This additional ground deformation required portions of the shaft concrete liner to be reinforced with frameless, steel liner plate. To eliminate the installation of the liner plate from the remaining shaft development, the design of the shaft excavation starting at the 7650 mine level was changed to an elliptical cross section based on the overall stress field orientation as well as the orientation of the structure of the host rock surrounding the shaft. The elliptical cross section was instrumented to confirm the shaft excavation and lining was performing as designed. This design change has allowed the shaft to continue to the planned 8620 mine level without the need to install liner plate in the shaft or change the overall functionality of the shaft or the Lucky Friday life of mine plan.INTRODUCTION Hecla’s Lucky Friday Mine is a deep, underground producer of silver, lead and zinc in the Coeur d’Alene mining district of northern Idaho (Figure 1). Primary access into the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk to an original depth of 1,890-m (6,200-ft). Current production is from the Gold Hunter vein system, approximately 1,525-m (5,000-ft) northwest of the Silver Shaft.Lucky Friday’s #4-Shaft is a 5.5-m (18-ft) finished diameter, internal shaft, or winze, being sunk to the north of the Gold Hunter vein system, from the mine’s 4760 level, 1,743-m (5,720-ft) below the surface, to the 8620 level, 2,923-m (9,590-ft) below the surface. The shaft is designed to provide access to the deep, high-grade zones of the Gold Hunter in order to increase the mine’s production and operational life. Design and engineering began in 2006, with construction starting in the fourth quarter of 2009."

Mineral exploration is a critical step for success in mining. However, small-scale mining often ignores exploration best practices. This paper introduces the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. This matrix, which measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small deposits with industry best practices, has been applied to three small mining projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the Amazon, a small-scale manganese mining venture in the Northeast, and a small manganese deposit in the Southeast. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that reflect the actual level of maturity of the mineral exploration program in each project. Therefore, the matrix has shown potential to be an effective tool for assessment of the geological uncertainty remaining in small-scale mineral projects, as well as to identify priority exploration activities for reduction of risks associated with the geological uncertainty. As a risk assessment tool, the TichauerDeTomi Matrix may be helpful in promoting investment and sustained development in and around small mines.

In response to the mandates in the MINER Act of 2006, NIOSH conducted refuge alternatives research that included characterizing the utility, practicality and survivability of refuge chambers and outby safe havens. NIOSH also prepared and delivered a report to Congress in late December 2007 that summarized the findings of the research, included recommendations concerning the design and performance specifications for refuge alternatives, and focused on specific information that could inform the regulatory process on refuge alternatives. This document highlights NIOSH's research and recommendations concerning refuge alternatives, survivability evaluations of refuge chambers, and presents a brief review of the current deployment of refuge chambers in underground coal mines in the U.S. The research has lead to the conclusion that refuge alternatives have the potential for saving the lives of mine workers if they are part of a comprehensive escape and rescue plan, and if appropriate training is provided. The application and use of steel fibre reinforced concrete in precast tunnel lining design is a growing trend due to its advantages in performance over plain concrete, and ease of manufacture compared to traditionally reinforced concrete. However, the design process and performance characteristics of the material are poorly served by current codes and standards. This paper provides some basic design guidance for segmental linings, and compares the material properties for the different material options. A typical example is considered to compare the possible results of lining arrangement and thicknesses for a plain, reinforced, and fibre reinforced design solution.

The design methodology of the planned Second Avenue Subway Project (SAS) led to development of the initial support design to estimate cost and quantities in the Preliminary Engineering (PE) stage. Careful selection of the cavern design rules that recognized the impact of rock quality, rock cover, excavation geometry, and excavation sequence helped to overcome the design challenges of large, shallow caverns for the initial ground support. In the course of the design verification process prescribed by the design methodology, the design team was continuously reviewing and updating the support quantities. The design procedure includes methods using different approaches of empirical, continuum, and discontinuum analyses, which are currently advanced in the Final Engineering (FE) stage. The paper is a continuation of the RETC 2005 “Trials and Tribulations” and focuses on the procedures that led to the changes in the initial support as a result of the ongoing design development.

The line scan video photometer is a personal computer (PC) based, software-driven instrument which is used for the real time, on-line analysis of industrial process streams. The novelty of the instrument lies in the integration of its various components: (l) a true Red/Green/Blue (R/G/B) color video camera; (2) a unique, line-scan color sample and hold technique which provides a 4 to 20 mA analog signal to a commercial 12 bit analog to digital (A/D) converter; (3) software which converts data through a color absorbance algorithm to correlate elemental color to concentration; and (4) software-based control which utilizes color data, along with temperature and conductivity data to control process equipment. The photometer can be used for noninvasive analysis wherever color hues are representative of process variables such as chemical concentrations or mineralogy color reflectance. The line scan video photometer has been successfully demonstrated in solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW) and ball mill circuits of copper producers.

Many excavation and loading tasks require equipment operators to simultaneously coordinate the motion of multiple machine links, in order to achieve complex tool trajectories. Efficiency, ore selectivity, and machine wear, are all affected by the skill level and attentiveness of the operator. A software-based kinematics reconfiguration system designed to assist operators with various tasks has been implemented on a small experimental excavator using our new differential control architecture. Kinematics transformation and feedback control algorithms are being developed and tested using computer simulation, and the results implemented on the experimental excavator. Several task-specific kinematics transformations, including a virtual revolute-to-Cartesian machine reconfiguration and computer-assisted bucket steering and stabilization have been successfully tested. Progress, challenges, results, expected benefits, and planned work are described.

The Ernest Henry copper-gold project is located in North West Queensland, Australia and commenced production in late August 1997. Utilizing a philosophy of selecting the biggest proven equipment available Ernest Henry at full production ¥ill treat 9 Mtpa through a single grinding line over a 15 year mine life. 350.000 tonnes of concentrate a year will be produced, containing 95,000 tonnes of copper and 120,000 ounces of gold. The two mills recently commissioned at the Ernest Henry Copper/Gold Mine are a 10.4m x 5.1m (34 ft x 16.75 ft) SAG Mill and a 6.1m x 8.4m (20 ft x 27.5 ft) ball mill. The mills have a power draw of 11 MW (14745 hp) and 5.5 MW (7373 hp) respectively. While the SAG Mill is not the largest SAG Mill in the world, it is the largest shell-supported SAG Mill in the world. The Ernest Henry mills epitomize the new standard design of large grinding mills. The design was introduced more than 20 years ago and has been further developed from extensive experience with grinding mills, and the need to produce a design, which overcomes the recognized problems of large mills. The result is a design with the potential to be used for mills up to the largest for which machine tools can be found to fabricate and machine them, currently approximately 15m (48') overall diameter.

Roots of many hydroponically grown terrestrial plants, including sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) effectively remove toxic metals such as Cu+2, Cd+2, Cr+6, Ni+2, Pb+2 and Zn+2 2 from aqueous solutions. It should be possible to scale up this process such that plant roots can be used to treat large volume aqueous waste streams. It can be extrapolated from laboratory results that to reduce the Cd concentration in a waste stream, from 1 ppm to below 4 ppb, with a flow rate of 4000 L/min, would require 3500 sq. m of plant roots with a density 5 kg fresh weight per sq. m. These results suggest that the roots of hydroponically grown terrestrial plants may provide an attractive alternative to the accepted water treatment technologies.

Chemical processing research made notable advances during 1986. This overview is necessarily brief. It is intended, though, to give the flavor of selected areas where recent activity has been high. At the 1986 Annual Meeting of The Metallurgical Society, a symposium was held on hydrometallurgical reactor design and kinetics. R. G. Bautista, R. J. Wesely, and G. W. Warren edited the resultant proceedings volume. This is the first available volume on this subject. It includes 26 papers on fundamental kinetic studies, modeling of reaction kinetics and reactor performance, and pilot and production-scale operations. Metals discussed include silver, gold, platinum, titanium, cobalt, nickel, zinc, copper, manganese, and iron. Agitated tanks, heaps, dumps, pachucas, pressure auto-claves, electrolytic reactors, liquid membranes, and fluidized beds are among the reactor types covered. An international symposium dealt with iron control in hydrometallurgy. It was sponsored by the Metallurgical Society of CIM, the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, The Metallurgical Society of AIME, and Gesellschaft Deutscher Metallhutten and Bergleute. J. E. Dutrizac and A. J. Monhemius edited a proceedings volume containing 41 papers. These covered many areas of process chemistry, solvent extraction, precipitation, treatment of pickle liquors, impurities, residues and the environment, and process selection. Precious metals Concerning precious metals processing, the US Bureau of Mines IC 9059 is noteworthy. It includes papers presented at a USBM briefing at the Western Mining Conference in Denver. Topics covered included ion exchange, staged heap-leaching direct-electrowinning, and mercury precipitation during cyanide leaching of gold ores. Also dealt with were carbonaceous gold ores, carbon adsorption and desorption, heap leaching, the carbon-in-pulp process, and precious metals recovery from electronic scrap and solder. R. C. Sandberg and J. L. Huiatt (Journal of Metals, June 1986, and USBM RI 9022) developed a method to recover silver, gold, and lead from a complex sulfide using ferric chloride, thiourea, and brine-leach solutions. Gallium Gallium recovery was also a subject of considerable interest. Much information on this topic is proprietary. But two papers described solvent extraction of gallium. V. P. Judin and R. G. Bautista (Metallurgical Transactions B, 1986) developed an equilibrium model to separate gallium chloride from aluminum chloride. Tributyl phosphate was the extractant studied. T. Sato and H. Oishi (Hydrometallurgy, 16, 1986) investigated gallium extraction from sodium hydroxide by using Kelex 100. Data were given on the equilibrium distribution and the extraction kinetics. Galena Interest continues in recovering lead by hydrometallurgical processing of galena. J. E. Dutrizac; S. H. Kim, H. Henein, and G. W. Warren; and M. C. Fuerstenau et al. (Metallurgical Transactions B, 1986) all investigated leaching of PbS by ferric chloride. Dutrizac reported parabolic kinetics and reaction control by outward diffusion of lead through a porous layer of elemental sulfur. Kim, Henein, and Warren, however, reported that two leaching reactions occur. A nonoxidative reaction produces H2S and there is an oxidative leaching by ferric ion. Acid dissolution was found to predominate when the acid activity to ferric activity ratio is high. Surface chemical reaction was reported to be controlling. Fuerstenau et al. also reported that mass transfer through the sulfur layer is rate determining. But they believe that the species transferred are chloro complexes of ferric ion. In other work on lead, A. Y. Lee, A. M. Wethington, and E. R. Cole, Jr. of the USBM described an environmentally acceptable hydrometallurgical alternative to the smelting of lead concentrates (RI 9055). Uranium In spite of depressed prices, much work has been reported on uranium processing. R. G. L. McCready, D. Wadden, and A. March-bank (Hydrometallurgy 17, 1986) described the nutrient needs for in-place leaching by T. ferrooxidans. They reported the optimal conditions for uranium solubilization. L. E. Eary, H. L. Barnes, and L. M. Cathles (Metallurgical Transactions B, 1986) carried out an experimental and modeling study of uraninite dissolution. They concluded that ferric ion preferentially leaches uraninite in pyritic ores. Hydrogen peroxide was found to be less selective. A. Vuorinen, P. Hiltunen, and O. H. Tuovinen (Hydrometallurgy 15, 1986) studied redox and precipitation reactions of iron and uranium in leach liquors. P. T. Chiang (Hydrometallurgy 17, 1986) reported on the effect of uranium loading in the DEPA-TOPO process to separate uranium and iron from wet-process phosphoric acid. F. J. Hurst (Hydrometallurgy 16, 1986) conducted a fundamental study of the separation of uranium from phosphoric acid by DEPA and TOPO. D. E. Chia and W. C. Cooper (Hydrometallurgy 16, 1986) reported on bench and pilot scale work to recover uranium by the HIMIX process. They reported that the acid consumption to produce an eluate suitable for yellowcake

MSHA has promulgated a rule to limit the exposure of underground metal/nonmetal miners to diesel particulate matter (DPM). In May 2008, the final personal exposure limit will be lowered to 160 µg/m3 total carbon. To comply with this rule, mine operators are implementing a variety of control technologies. In this study two types of control technologies (ventilation and cabs) which are being implemented in limestone mines were investigated. Two stone mines in this study use large diameter propeller fans for main mine ventilation and direct the air to the faces using auxiliary fans, stoppings, and long pillars while bypassing the old mine workings. NIOSH measured for sub-micrometer elemental carbon (EC) using SKC DPM cassettes (analyzed using NIOSH 5040) and a near real time instrument. With the present ventilation and the number and type of vehicles used, the concentration of EC from DPM at the working areas was at or below 400 µg/m3 for both mines and about 166 µg/m3 and 251 µg/m3 at the returns. The real time data showed that the ventilation was reaching the working areas and effectively diluting the DPM. Environmental cabs were also used to reduce DPM exposures in three underground limestone mines. Using NIOSH method 5040 and near real time EC instrumentation, NIOSH sampled inside and outside of a loader cab at one of these limestone mines to determine the effectiveness of the cab. The cab was found to be over 90% effective in removing DPM as long as the cab system was properly maintained, and doors and windows were closed.

INTRODUCTION The transportation of men, supplies, and mined material from an underground operation is the connecting link between the mine plant and the surface plant. Unless the mine is accessed by a drift or adit, some form of hoisting system is necessary for slopes or shafts. This chapter will deal with the selection of wire ropes and hoists, two of the most important consider¬ations when designing a hoisting system for an under¬ground mine. WIRE ROPES General A wire rope is designed to transmit forces longitudi¬nally along its axis. Wire rope is used in a variety of mining applications because of its flexibility, high ten¬sile strength, and dependability. Shaft hoisting ropes and principal slope haulage ropes are usually custom-¬built; however, proper rope selection for slushers, car spotters, etc. should not be overlooked. Wire ropes for shafts and slopes, since they represent the life line for the mines, should be of the very highest quality improved plow steel. This quality is necessary to deal with the conditions of loading, winding, vibration, abrasion, and corrosion. Tables I and 2 display the specifications for the typical wire ropes used for mine haulage applications. The 6 x 19-class haulage rope is used for most hoisting where abrasion is not critical. On the other hand, where abrasion is critical, such as a slope application, 6 X 7-class haulage ropes are preferred. For other mining applications, manufactur¬ers' handbooks should be consulted. Selection The selection of a wire rope for a mining situation consists of simply applying appropriate safety factors to a calculated maximum rope pull and comparing the result to the listed breaking strength of the rope under consideration. Table 3 can be used for determin¬ing the minimum factors of safety for wire ropes. To determine the maximum rope pull, the following quantities must be known: the rope weight in pounds (x), the conveyance weight in pounds (y), and the weight in pounds of the load in the conveyance (z). These values are used to calculate the load due to gravity, the load due to conveyance friction, and the load due to rope friction.
