Introduction Backfilling of mine voids is used to prevent or control the effects of subsidence on surface structures. The pumped-slurry, blind backfilling process has been successful for stabilizing ground over abandoned and inaccessible underground coal mines. This article describes the systematic evaluation of potential monitoring systems that would improve backfill monitoring technology. It also details field proof-of-concept tests that were conducted on two systems and the difficulties encountered in implementing them. Ground subsidence over abandoned mines can have devastating effects on overlying urban areas decades after the closing of room-and-pillar mines. The result may be cracked foundations, ruptured gas and water lines, broken sewers, distortion or cracking in superstructures, and sinks and potholes in the ground surface. About 32,000 km2 (8 million acres) of land in the US has been undermined for coal. According to the US General Accounting Office, 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) have undergone subsidence and another 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) are expected to subside by the year 2000. Actual figures on land affected or threatened by subsidence are probably much higher, since these estimates were based on late 1960s studies. For more than two decades, the US Bureau of Mines has been engaged in stabilizing ground in urban areas having high risk potential for subsidence costing millions of dollars. Thousands of acres have been stabilized, protecting property worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In earlier years, backfilling was by in-mine stowing in accessible mines or by gravity-feed sluicing methods in inaccessible mines. Pumped-slurry methods have been used extensively in the past 10 years. More slurry can be injected for fill from fewer injection holes over extensive areas in abandoned mines. Since this method requires fewer boreholes, there is less disruption of surface facilities. An investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using advanced, remote sensing or monitoring technology for application in monitoring fill placement. Specifically, the objective was to develop conceptual systems for blind backfill monitoring that require fewer boreholes and give better definition than is now possible. Blind Backfilling Methods Blind backfilling operations are conducted from the surface and do not require personnel and equipment underground. These methods are applicable to abandoned, inaccessible workings. Two categories of blind back-filling are point support, practiced by civil engineers to protect individual structures or surface facilities, and areal backfilling methods, used to protect large areas against subsidence. Point Support Methods Point support methods are usually gravity-feed systems. In general, point support methods use small volumes of expensive fill material and require a large number of boreholes within a constructed site. Because of the processed material used for back-filling and the close spacing of the injection boreholes, control and monitoring often may be accomplished by borehole cameras. Areal Backfilling Areal backfilling is conducted mainly by the pumped-slurry injection process (Fig. 1). Asia is experiencing a growth market for industrial kaolins for use in ceramics, paper, plastics and other market sectors. Export and import data for the Asian countries reflects this growth with the Peoples Republic of China as the major exporter of clays and Japan the major importer. The growth in tonnage and product sophistication of kaolins produced on Belitung in Indonesia is typical of developments that are taking place in many locations in Asia. This region therefore presents opportunities for mineral processors and a challenge for the exploration geologist, the mineral processing engineer, the mineral economist and the marketing specialist.

The flotation chemistry of the commercial INCO matte separation process was investigated. The slow cooling of Bessemer converter matte forms discrete phases of Cu2S and Ni3S2 and a Cu-Ni alloy. After magnetically removing the alloy, the Cu2S and Ni3S2 are separated by flotation at pH 12.4 (saturated lime) using diphenyl guanidine (DPG) as both collector and frother. DPG has been used exclusively in this flotation process because of its unusual selectivity for copper minerals. The surface product resulting from chemisorption of DPG onto the Cu2S was identified as the double salt Cu(DPG)2SO4,.CU(DPG)2(OH)2. The adsorption followed Langmuir behaviour up to a monolayer coverage. In the absence of DPG, the rapid adsorption of oxygen by Cu2S in flotation pulps was observed. The surface product was identified as the insoluble basic copper sulfate CuSO4.3Cu(OH)2 with the production of sulfate ion. In the presence of DPG, the oxidation reaction appears to be suppressed. The frothing properties of DPG and commercial frothers were compared. DPG is not a powerful frother. Batch flotation tests confirmed that DPG is a highly selective collector when compared to most sulfhydryl collectors.

Corrosion of steel roof support systems can cause potential premature failure of the support, thus adversely affecting the excavation stability and rock-related safety. An in-house corrosion test system was designed and developed to test full-length roof bolts for material performance based on tensile load capacity and strength under different corrosive conditions found underground. Initially, ASTM A615 grade 60 steel roof bolts, which are the most commonly used bolt material in the United States, were tested with and without stresses in a simulated underground coal-mining environment for approximately six months. This paper mainly discusses the test system, protocol and system shortcomings, and makes recommendations based on the observations and results.

Increasing attention is being paid to laterite nickel ore as an alternative to nickel sulfide ore to act as a feedstock for nickel metal production. While laterite nickel ore accounts for a lion’s share of global nickel resources at approximately 72 percent, it accounts for only 42 percent of the world’s nickel production. In addition, the processing of nickel sulfide ore is confronted with enormous challenges due to deeper drilling requirements, higher production costs and depleting reserves. The nickel content in the nickel laterite ore associated with hydrated iron oxides and silicate minerals limits the application of physical beneficiation methods for the removal of iron. Thus, magnetic reduction roasting followed by magnetic separation has been regarded as one of the attractive routes to concentrate and separate the valuable metals from the impurities.

Botswana is a mining-dominated sub-Saharan country. Workforces are characterised by poorly educated operators and front line supervisors, with equipment and management to 1st World standards. Poor communication, ignorance of business objectives, inability to meet targets, and lack of problem-solving capacity are the norm. Training leads to high expectations and is of concern to management as a source of dissatisfaction, despite the long-term benefits higher skills have for mine viability. The aims of a technical training programme are presented with various models and approaches being implemented at operations in Botswana. These are used to construct a series of guidelines for technical training initiatives.

The occurrence of borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo is well documented by McAnulty and Hoffer (1) and Lefond and Barker (2). Further investigation indicates the presence of priceite and meyerhofferite in addition to the howlite (1) and colemanite (2). Analcime occurs in addition to the clinoptilolite and phillipsite (2). The Mesa del Alamo area is about 200 !a south of Tucson, Arizona, and 13 km southeast of Magdalena, Sonora, Mexico, just south of the unpaved road to Cucurpe (Figure 1). The geology and mineralogy of northcentral Sonora is known only on a regional basis except for small areas mapped in detail during copper exploration. The study area is within the Basin and Range province of North America from which borates and zeolites are now produced in California. The borates and zeolites at Mesa del Alamo occur in geological environments similar to those of the Mojave and Death Valley regions of California (3, 4). Thus, a detailed exploration pro- gram in the Magdalena area could result in the discovery of economic borate and/or zeolite deposits.

Recent sewer construction in downtown New Haven, CT required avoiding open trench methods because of near surface utilities and traffic congestion. The .73 km long alignment is in sands with the water table at the tunnel's springline. The designers felt the situation was ideal for an EPB machine; however, the tunneling method was left to the Contractor. The winning bid surprised everyone. The tunnel is being excavated by hand using an open face shield with breasting boards. The review of the bids indicates hand mining was approximately 1/2 the bid price of TBMs. Currently, excavation rates average 14 m/day with no excessive settlements.

The ability to increase and maintain dragline productivity is a key mine driver for the Coal Creek Mine. The Coal Creek Mine is owned by Arch Coal Inc subsidiary Thunder Basin Coal Company; located near Gillette, WY. Coal Creek Mine overburden stripping is primarily accomplished by a BE-1570W walking dragline in combination with cast blasting and dozer assist for bench preparation. The two main variables impacting dragline performance are maintenance reliability and operator skill levels. The mine?s most recent process improvement efforts have focused on its most valuable asset - the operator. Various techniques have been used to reduce variability in the dragline operator?s digging performance. Utilization and communication of operator performance data, statistics, and video reviews have been of great value towards achieving this goal. Operators are given a chance to critique operational tendencies from a third-person point of view, and are also presented statistical feedback to support observations. From these sessions, operators gain knowledge as to what portions of the dig cycle can be improved in order to reduce cycle time and increase productivity. BACKGROUND The BE-1570W walking dragline was commissioned at Coal Creek in November 2006 after relocating from Arch of Wyoming located in southeast Wyoming. The first two years of operation the machine was performing simple side cast stripping due to the low ratio. Coal Creek Mine is a multiple seam operation with overburden thickness ranging from 24 to 140 feet. Early in 2009 the ratio increased to the point where transitioning to cast blast/extended bench stripping was necessary. The current mining conditions consist of a mixture of both stripping styles where the ratio allows. The dragline crews running the machine consist of a mixture of experience levels ranging from 30+ years to only a few years. It has been in this digging environment and slightly inexperienced personnel that the focus has been set for improvement in dragline performance.

Cumulophyric feldspars, of varying morphology, carry myrmekitic quartz interstitially between microperthitic feldspar lamellae. The size, coarseness, and morphology of these crystals, together with concordant foliation features constitutes evidence that they are a product of primary crystallization, formed prior to eruption from a vent. These crystals occur preferentially along 2 - 5 mm thick tan, vesicular to compressed alteration bands intercalated with more densely welded light grey bands. In perlite with quartz at or below a 0.1% threshold, megascopic feldspars are less than 1%. Perlite with quartz above this level has megascopic feldspar concentrations >3%, typically in the 5-20% range.

A process has been developed to recover gold and copper from two waste materials at the Bougainville Copper Limited mine in Papua New Guinea. It involves the bioleaching, in reactors, of a pyrite concentrate to liberate refractory gold and generate sulphuric acid, ferric sulphate and biomass for bacterial leaching of a chalcopyritic waste rock dump. Gold is to be recovered by cyanide leaching and copper by solvent extraction/electrowinning. The reactor bioleaching was developed in continuously operated reactors of 1 m3 capacity by CRA Advanced Technical Development at Cockle Creek, while the dump leaching was developed in 750 kg columns on site at Bougainville Copper Limited. The process was to be piloted on site.

1- Importance of Shafts for the Exploration and Extraction of Coal Deposits Coal mining in the Federal Republic of Germany is carried out in a depth between 800 and 1200 m below sea level (Fig. 1). The shortest connections underground in a mine and up to the surface are vertical shafts. Such shafts assume, with ventilation, manriding and the winding of material, the most important functions for the maintenance of mining operations. In the German coal mining industry, a difference is made between the main shafts providing a direct access from the surface to the deposits, and the so-called "blindshafts" which serve as a connection between two or several haulage levels underground. Froth flotation has been used industrially for many years to separate valuable minerals from their associated gangue constituents. Notwithstanding the significance of this process to the mineral industry, many of the engineering tools needed for the evaluation of the flotation process are still in a developmental stage. Traditionally, the evaluation of a flotation test on both the laboratory and industrial scale has been based largely on a rougher recovery value achieved at a sufficiently long time to give a "final" or "equilibrium" recovery value. The assumption of a time equivalency for a given recovery value between various flotation tests or between laboratory tests and industrial operation underlies this method of evaluation. Such an assumption implies that flotation is an "equilibrium engineering process" and that the time-rate recovery of material from the flotation cell is not affected by changes in the flotation system. It has been shown by Bushell (1) and by Klimpel (2) that the assumption of time equivalency between various flotation tests is unjustified. Consequently, better tools are needed for evaluating flotation test results, Because mathematical flotation models which incorporate both a recovery and a rate function can completely describe flotation time-recovery profiles, they can provide an excellent tool to evaluate flotation tests.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP), commonly known as black lung, is caused by the inhalation of respirable coal mine dust and is a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease with no cure. Historically, CWP has taken a tremendous human and financial toll on the U.S. coal mining industry. Recent health surveillance data indicate that CWP continues to occur at elevated levels. Respirable coal dust exposure must be controlled to prevent the development of CWP. The Pittsburgh Mining Research Division of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducts laboratory and mine-site research to identify control technologies that can be used to successfully reduce respirable dust levels. Various technologies, using multiple methods of control, can be applied to reduce dust levels. An overview of CWP’s impact and a general methodology for controlling respirable dust in underground coal mines are discussed in this paper.

The paper describes ground improvements, the actual excavation, and also the final lining works. Schedule and sequencing restrictions provided some unique challenges which had to be considered when designing and constructing these mostly short, but essential portions of the project

Innovative solution management is being used at Coeur-Rochester, Inc. to increase bullion production and decrease overall costs. New operating programs call for reduced solution application rates to the heap to increase pregnant stream values at a lower and less costly plant flowrate because silver and gold extractions are equal regardless of leach solution application rate. Solar heating is used in the summer months to increase the core temperature of the heap for use in the winter months thus increasing silver extraction rate. This paper outlines the programs now in effect and the savings incurred because of them.

The last two decades have witnessed the resurgence in popularity of a century old tool for shaping laws and public policy – the ballot initiative. In recent years, anti-mining special interests have used the initiative process to secure voter approval of measures to ban modern surface mining for gold and silver. In November 1998, voters in Montana approved such a measure1 – the effects of which have been devastating to the mining industry in that state. In November 1999, anti-mining groups sought to place a nearly identical provision on the general election ballot in Colorado. They did not succeed, but the battle over mining’s future continues in the most important forum of all – the court of public opinion. The Colorado measure failed, in large part, because its proponents failed to convey a positive environmental theme. The mining industry also exercised early-on the rights available under state law for administrative and judicial review of the initiative, instead of relying upon the limited relief that would have been available had it waited until after the secretary of state approved the measure for the November election ballot. This article will summarize the ballot initiative process in Colorado and the proceedings that took place over Initiative No. 215.

Since World War II, when off-track mining became popular, mining machinery has undergone much change. However, the change has been basically to make the machines more powerful, more productive and more reliable. Little change has been made, in this period, in the basic mining system. While steady improvement was made in productivity until the passage of the new Federal Coal Mine Health & Safety Act, I believe that the cost Co benefit ratio of further improvement from this basic approach of improving the existing extractive tool is not as promising as I believe may be obtained from a new approach. Consequently, six years ago Conoco and Consol undertook a comprehensive long-range R&D program to see if improvements of a more basic nature could be made in underground mining. We concluded early in our program that while many things currently limit the rate of production such as the rate at which roof can be supported, time needed to advance ventilation systems, time required to clean up and rock dust, time required to maintain and service equipment as well as time lost due to haulage deficiencies, that the key to improvement was a truly flexible continuous high capacity haulage. With face equipment in use today, mining rates can be increased with such a haulage system where the ability to support the roof exceeds the ability of conventional haulage equipment to remove the coal. More importantly, if we could develop such a system, it would set the stage for development of far more sophisticated methods of mining at the face than exist today, and as new and more dependable mining machines and methods are developed, continuous transportation will enable the gains envisaged in production to be realized.

Underground mines, penetrating well below the water table, quickly fill with water when abandoned. Ordinarily, these natural cisterns are not thought of as sources of industrial water. Under special circumstance, if chemically treatable, they might become valuable industrial water reservoirs. An example of a group of about 20 mines in a geological and structural setting insuring water entrapment, rapid recharge and a possible minimum of contamination, are the small, compact Belle Ellen and Piper basins in Alabama's small but second most productive coalfield, the Cahaba. The mines have been abandoned from more than 50 to less than three years. The county now produces about a million tons of coal annually, all from strip mining. Figure 1 shows an idealized cross section of the strata in the Belle Ellen syncline near West Blocton, Bibb County, Alabama. Figure 2, 3 and 4 are maps showing the location of the syncline, other structural features, the outcrop lines of the three principal coalbeds underlying the basin, and the mined-out areas on the three beds (1).

Coalbed methane (CBM) is currently being produced from a relatively small area in the Dunkard and Pocahontas basins, in the northern and central parts of the Appalachian Basin, respectively. In general, much of the production occurs where the coal beds are beneath 500 feet or more of overburden, where the rank of the coal is high-volatile B or greater (%Ro >0.8), and where the natural fracture system is enhanced by structural deformation. It is anticipated that near-term CBM development will continue within these areas and will expand in the Appalachian basin as technology improves and as the price of gas rises.
