The Chimney Hollow Reservoir Project (CHRP) is located southwest of Loveland, Colorado. CHRP is a component of the Windy Gap Firming Project, operated by the Municipal Subdistrict of the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District. The inlet/outlet tunnel (IOT) for CHRP contains a reinforced concrete lined alve Chamber with PC membrane waterproong that was ecavated via seuential ecavation method to a diameter of feet. The IOT was ecavated using both drill and blast and road header with ground support consisting of steel sets, rock bolts, wire mesh and shotcrete. The IOT will withstand 300 feet of water head and rock ll surcharge load from the dam embankment constructed over the tunnel.

Laboratory investigations on the possibility of using magnetic separation for the recovery of sulfide minerals have been reported. A survey of several sulfide ores and flotation concentrates indicated that, in most cases, magnetic separation is not a suitable primary beneficiation method. However, encouraging results have been obtained in concentrate purification. At the Boliden complex sulfide ore concentrator in Garpenberg, Sweden, an Allis-SALA Mark III carousel High Gradient Magnetic Separator (HGMS) is used with a small flotation circuit to recover sphalerite lost to the galena concentrate during lead flotation. After four years of refining the HGMS process, there has been an increase in zinc recovery and an enhancement in the quality of the lead concentrate.

The integrity of shale gas wells in longwall chain pillars under the influence of longwall mining is a safety concern for both coal and gas operators. Previous modeling studies of gas wells in longwall pillars have shown that a FLAC3D model can predict longwall-induced stresses and deformations in gas well casings with reasonable accuracy. The predicted casing deformations can be verified by multi-finger caliper survey. This study concerns the influence of longwall mining on eight shale gas wells in a shale gas well pad located in the chain pillars between two adjacent longwall panels under 1,030 feet of cover. FLAC3D modeling was performed to predict longwall-induced deformations in gas well casings based on site-specific mining and geological conditions. Small deformations less than 0.5 in were predicted in the intermediate casing above 600 ft depth, and very small casing deformations less than 0.15 in were predicted below 600 ft due to high abutment pressure and high frictional resistance along the weak bedding interfaces. After the first panel was mined, a 56-arm caliper survey was performed on one of the wells to measure the longwall-induced casing deformations in the intermediate casing. The predicted casing deformations were then compared with the measured deformations, which indicated that the prediction was generally in good agreement with the measurement in terms of deformation locations and magnitudes. Findings from this study provide valuable information not only for stability assessment of shale gas wells in longwall chain pillars but also for developing engineering guidelines to preserve casing integrity through adequate pillar and casing design.

The elimination of metal ions from aqueous solutions by biosorption plays an important role in water pollution control. Heavy metals are hazardous to the aquatic ecosystem and pose possible human health risk. Beside the toxic and harmful effects to organisms living in water heavy metals also accumulate throughout the food chain and may affect human beings. Conventional methods for removing metals from aqueous solutions before they are disposed of include chemical precipitation and sludge separation, chemical oxidation or reduction, ion exchange, reverse osmosis, electrochemical treatment, and evaporation. Alternative processing methods are being considered more seriously. Sorption and/or complexation of dissolved metals species based on the chemical activity of biomass, known as biosorption, is the base of the new technology for metal removal and recovery. Different types of biomass (dead and alive) have been investigated for biosorption of heavy metals ions. In the present work, the cadmium biosorption capacity and bioflotation of Rhodococcus opacus were studied. The adsorption capacity of biomass was investigated by batch experiments, the influences of some variables like pH and ion concentration were evaluated and the experimental data obtained for each metal were evaluated and fitted using adsorption and kinetic models. The bioflotation process showed that R. opacus has excellent features as collector and foaming agent after metal biosorption. Around 90% of cadmium uptake by the biomass was achieved by bioflotation.

On Dec. 20, 2013, an 8-m (26.2-ft) diameter Robbins hybrid single shield/earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (EPB TBM) was launched to bore the Grosvenor decline tunnel for Australia?s Anglo American coal mine. The machine was built using onsite first time assembly (OFTA) in order to fit within a tight project schedule. Assembly at the remote jobsite near Moranbah, Australia took about four-and-a-half months, and then the machine was walked down into a launch tunnel. Two decline tunnels, at grades of 1:6 and 1:8, will be used for mine access to new coal seams. The hybrid machine is tackling mixed ground conditions ranging from sand and clay to varying types of sedimentary hard rock up to 120 MPa UCS, as well as coal seams. Methane gas is expected to be present throughout the tunnel, so the machine has been designed as explosion-proof-compliant to ERZ-1. ?Grosvenor is the first underground coal mine in Queensland to use a TBM for drift construction,? said Glenn Tonkin, Grosvenor project director. ?We are proud to be pioneering this technology.? Only about 300 m (984 ft) of ground in each decline tunnel is expected to require EPB mode, while the rest of the tunnel will be bored in hard rock mode. Thus, the design was optimized toward hard rock excavation.

In late 1971, the Sun Company, then known as Sun Oil Company, acquired a large surface mineable federal coal lease with the thought that those coal measures within its boundaries would provide a future feedstock of either coal or coal liquification. Our Cordero lease was one of the last Federal coal leases let before the recent decade long leasing moratorium. Because of the tremendous demand for compliance steam coal for the electric power industry, a decision was made to develop the property to serve that market. In 1974, Sunoco Energy Development Company (SUNEDCO), the non- oil and gas energy unit of the Sun Company, began engineering studies for development of the lease. The mine was originally designed at a 12.0 million ton per year capacity. The Cordero Mining Company was formed to mine and operate the property. Construction of the facilities adjacent to the lease began in January 1975. Due to the Sierra Club versus Department of Interior Secretary L. B. Morton suit, work within the lease was delayed until mid-1976 when pre-stripping of the overburden began.

The gold ores in the Jerritt Canyon district have been recognized as refractory since they were first encountered by FMC geologists in 1976. Upon obtaining managing rights as joint venture partner, Freeport McMoRan Inc. developed an operating plan featuring carbon-in-leach gold recovery techniques for the oxide portion of the ores and a patented sulphide oxidation step followed by chlorination for treating the organic carbon constituents of the refractory ores prior to CIL gold recovery. The plant was successfully started up in 1981 with the first gold poured on July 4, 1981. Initial plant throughput was designed to be 2495 MTPD (2750 STPD) total through the dual processing trains.

"As part of the new 2nd Ave Subway Project, an existing tunnel constructed in the 1970’s will be connected to the new subway and used as new running tunnels. The existing tunnel had to be modified to comply with newer structural and fire life safety codes and to be connected to the new cut and cover station at 96th St. This paper will discuss the complexities of tying an existing tunnel constructed over 40 years ago into the new station and allowing for movements due to the unloading of the existing tunnel and the differential settlement of the two structures during both the construction and permanent condition. Topics that will be discussed include structural analysis, ground improvement techniques, selection of support of excavation walls, working in contaminated soil and instrumentation and monitoring of the structures. It will also cover retrofitting the tunnel to comply with updated Fire/Life/Safety requirements. PROJECT OVERVIEW The Second Avenue Subway (SAS) will be the first major expansion of New York’s subway system in over 50 years. To be constructed in four phases, it will run from 125th St. in Harlem to Hanover Square in the Financial District (see Figure 1). For most of its length, the alignment is directly under the Second Avenue roadway."

The work described in this paper is sponsored by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of accelerating the drilling of roof bolt holes and reducing the quantity of materials needed to fill each hole. A high-speed small-hole drill has been fabricated and tested in the laboratory. High priority has been given to safety, reliability, and compatibility with underground coal mining practice. The combination of drag bits and erosion jets is designed for high penetration rate, long wear life, and uniform hole size in a variety of sedimentary strata. A reliable high-pressure high-speed swivel feeds water to the bit at about 4 1/min (1 gpm). The duplex hydraulic intensifier which drives the jets has a 40 kw capacity (30hhp) Results of recent full-scale laboratory testing are presented.

Ensuring adequate ventilation is a critical aspect of safety in underground mining operations. In small-scale mines in particular, key ventilation parameters such as temperature, humidity, and air velocity are often measured manually and only at infrequent intervals, typically using analog instruments. As a result, real-time monitoring of environmental changes, timely detection of hazardous situations, and demand-driven ventilation control are not feasible. This presentation discusses the selection and evaluation of modern digital ventilation measurement devices, including handheld instruments with digital data logging capabilities and continuously operating sensors with potential for real-time data transmission. The investigations focus on the challenges posed by underground environments with extremely high humidity levels, which can adversely affect sensor performance and electronic components. The results are based on testing conducted at the Research and Teaching Mine of TU Bergakademie Freiberg—an underground ore mine characterized by humidity levels exceeding 95%. Findings include assessments of measurement accuracy, reliability, and practical applicability under these demanding conditions.

INTRODUCTION The U. S. mining industry experienced a severe recession in the early 1980's. This resulted in the realization that the domestic mining industry had to compete on a global basis and only the strong or the low-cost producers would survive. The economic viability of a mining company not only depended on maximizing mineral recovery but also on its ability to do so at minimum cost. Companies had to become more productive not only by cutting costs, but also by developing and/or evaluating new technologies in existing or new plants. Several innovative concepts, including in-pit crushing and conveying, fine crushing, improved classification equipment, flotation, column flotation, pressure filtration, etc., have been developed in recent years. This paper addresses the impact of new flotation concepts and equipment on mill design. MILL DESIGN PHILOSOPHY Modern mill design, especially for large capacity plants, has its foundation in minimizing capital and operating costs. Capital costs can be minimized by minimizing the various components of the capital cost: infrastructure, equipment, instrumentation, structural, initial spare parts costs, etc. All these costs are minimized by simplifying the mill design and/or process flowsheet. The simplified process flowsheet, where applicable, consists of a single stage primary crusher followed by a semiautogeneous - ball mill grinding circuit to produce feed for a flotation circuit. Multiple flotation circuits have been eliminated in most cases. These concepts minimize the cost and encourage the use of large capacity equipment while maintaining optimum metallurgical recovery. The philosophy of mill modernization/modification is generally driven by the desire to increase the mill capacity within the limits of the existing mill building. This need is facilitated by using large size flotation equipment and eliminating multiple parallel flotation circuits in order to minimize capital and operating costs. Conventional flotation machine development has paralleled this mill design philosophy. FLOTATION CELL DESIGN Since froth flotation has been the most widely used separation process for over half a century, one would expect that it would be possible to design and select flotation machines for specific applications based on scientific principles. But this has not been the case. Best judgment, experience and personal prejudice have played a key role in equipment selection. These factors, along with the difficulty of evaluating new concepts in commercial plants, has slowed progress in implementation and commercialization of innovative ideas and/or equipment. Conventional Flotation There have been no major technological advances in conventional flotation cell design in recent years. A recent flotation cell survey indicates that 'larger flotation cells are still the order of the day.”(1) A comprehensive review of design of flotation machines indicate that they have been mechanically redesigned and are generally simpler and easier to maintain and less expensive to manufacture. (2,3) The approximate chronological development of conventional cells from the 25 cubic foot cells to the 3000 cubic foot cells, which were recently installed at the Copperton concentrator of Utah Copper, is given in Table 1. Larger flotation cells are the obvious choice for new plants or plants looking for expansion because of the following reasons: • They have lower capital cost per unit volume • Installation costs are generally lower because fewer units require less space • Maintenance costs are lower because of fewer mechanisms • Power requirements (HP/ton dry feed) are generally lower • with increased flotation cell size as illustrated in Table 2 [Table 1. Physical mine modeling and computer simulation techniques were used to conduct technical feasibility and economic analyses of selected pit configurations for surface mining a single coal seam dipping at about 15% to a maximum depth of 46 m (150 ft). Pit orientations along the true dip (dipline), along the strike (strikeline), and along an apparent dip were studied. Physical models of each pit configuration were prepared first to delineate potential operational problem areas and also to furnish data for the computer simulation models. A dragline microsimulation, a shovel/truck simulation, and a surface mine cost analysis models were used to conduct the study. Sensitivity analyses were conducted on variables such as the pit width, block length, and seam pitch. The productivity (m3/h) of the mining equipment (dragline or stripping shovel) under each set of conditions was used to optimize the pit configuration. Both block length and panel width were found to significantly affect the dragline productivity. Larger size trucks were preferable to smaller size trucks in the pit con¬figuration along an apparent dip. The cost analysis results showed that the pit configuration along the seam dip was more economical than the pit along the strike or along an apparent dip for the mining condition studied.

"INTRODUCTIONEdilmac dei F.lli Maccabelli (hereinafter referred to as Edilmac) has recently developed a special civil engineering application using the Raise Boring technology with the assistance of Inrock MGS (Magnetic Guidance System). Applying the Paratrack Magnetic Guidance System coupled with a directional mud motor to the drill string allows a better accuracy compared to standard drilling, as showed in our tests. This is the first time the Paratrack System has been applied to the Raise Boring technology. RAISE BORING METHOD STATEMENT The Raise Boring technology was born in North America during the Sixties. In 1962, Ingersoll and Robbins were the first companies to produce Raise Boring Machines (RBM). The technology was first used in the underground mine industry, in order to bore ventilation shafts and passes through different levels, thus reducing the cost of haulage. The Raise Boring method is only feasible in stable rock conditions. The Raise Boring method consists of drilling a small diameter pilot hole that reaches a tunnel located at the bottom of the drilled hole. Once the pilot hole reaches the tunnel, a reamer head is installed at the end of the drill string and pulled up, creating the hole with the designed diameter (Figures 1 and 2). The main equipment, which is required to perform Raise Boring activities, is the following: •,An RBM; •,A tricone bit; •,Drilling rods; •,A reaming head; The standard mucking of the pilot hole is done with water or bentonite mud. For the last 30 years, Edilmac has developed a mucking process, which uses compressed air with the addition of foam or a small amount of water for dust control.Pilot hole tricone. The drilling of the pilot hole is usually performed with a tricone bit having a diameter between 11” (27.61 cm) and 15” (38.10 cm) (Figure 3). High strength rods. They generally have a diameter ranging from 10” (25.40 cm) to 12 ?” (32.70 cm) (Figure 4), depending on the length and the final diameter of the shaft."

Marble is a preferred surfacing material in up-scale buildings. Its use increased in the 1870's with rising national wealth and declined in the 1950's when synthetic materials for these applications were developed. Natural marble is now limited to high-end domestic and commercial structures. Cultured marble is a paste of white marble dust and polyester resin cured in molds yielding fixtures of specific finished dimensions. Dyes incorporated at different stages in the mixing cycle mimic shades and veining of natural marble. This paper discusses the filler requirements for cultured marble production and reviews new techniques to cut and finish natural marble.

For the African continent promoting a sustainable utilization of its mineral resources could be considered as a key determinant to fight against poverty. Sustainable development performance indicators for measuring the economic, environmental and social impacts of mining activity are necessary for drawing up policies and sectoral actions, identifying and controlling risks, identifying and implementing sustainable development actions, negotiating between stake-holders, improving mine production, etc. To respond to this need, the SIGAfrique Network proposed to develop a joint decision support tool entitled the African Mining Observatory (AMO) and, to this end, develops a system of indicators to be integrated within the SIGAfrique database. The development of both the OMA and the indicators is based on a participatory method within the working groups, which comprise experts/participants from the 13 SIGAfrique partner and observer countries (Guinea, Burkina Faso, Mali, Tanzania, Niger, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda, Senegal, Angola, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and Mauritania).

From 1996 to 2001, Wayne County and 13 suburban Detroit communities constructed the Downriver Regional Storage and Transport System (DRSTS) to improve area water quality, protect public health and alleviate basement flooding. The project consisted of a 10-mile long storage and transport tunnel, a pump station at the existing wastewater treatment plant, 9 miles of relief sewers (6 in tunnel and 3 in open cut). The work was separated into 10 contracts. Due to hydraulic design requirements and other constraints, the tunnel profile was located generally 65 feet below ground surface within a soft to medium clay strata which skimmed along the top of a very dense glacial till “hardpan” overlaying bedrock. Boulders within the tunnel bore were recognized as a significant, but indeterminate risk. This paper presents a case history of the owner’s contracting strategy for risk assumption and management of the boulder impacts on the project. Actual conditions encountered during construction and contractual adjustments made to address problems are reviewed, and recommendations for future contracts are included.

INTRODUCTION The basic premise of the ideas presented in this paper are as follows: Engineers believe that "theoretically" it will work. Operators ask what they must do to make it work. And, people can screw it up. r Today the challenges conf onted during the engineering, startup and operation of mines are becoming more complex. As mining and processing professionals, we are called upon to trav­el all over the world, are subjected to a wide variety of climates and must deal with a numerous cultures and people. Historically, for the majority of the people working in the mining industry, the primary challenges related to projects have focused on the differing perspectives of the disciplines involved. For example, geologists focus on resources and reserves, mining engineers relate to tons or tonnes, metallurgists count ounces or pounds or kilograms of product, mechanics emphasize availabil­ity, human resources personnel deal with absentee rates and turnover and accountants watch the bottom line ($$'s). As the world has become "smaller" and the mining industry has become more globalized, the puzzle is becoming increasingly difficult. Even the most experienced in the crowd of mining profes­sionals are oftentimes surprised by the types of problems that are encountered. Try as we may, we cannot anticipate the complex­ity of dealing with the human side of an operation.

The Upper Llagas Creek Flood Protection Project in Northern California encompasses portions of the communities of Morgan Hill and Gilroy, and unincorporated areas of Santa Clara County. The project provides for flood protection improvements along Llagas Creek and two of its tributaries, West Little Llagas Creek and East Little Llagas Creek. Llagas Creek is one of the tributaries of the Pajaro River and drains a watershed of approximately 104 square miles. The river system has a history of flooding the watershed communities, and the project’s goal is to provide 100-year flood protection by creating a bypass infrastructure, including channels, cut-and-cover culverts, and a tunnel. The project has been divided into several phases. This paper describes Phase 2A, which consists of approximately 2,150 linear feet of lined horseshoe-shaped bypass tunnel measuring 14 feet wide by 12 feet high. The bypass tunnel was sequentially excavated using a combination of roadheader and controlled blasting through colluvium and weathered to fresh greenstone. The tunnel was mined near residences, requiring strict noise and vibration controls. Phase 2A also includes the construction of twin bypass concrete culverts, portal shoring, and dewatering systems. It features the use of a Design Review Board and partnering for project delivery. This case study discusses the bypass tunnel design, progress of tunnel construction, plans to complete the work, construction risks, and the software and procedural tools being used to manage the project, including ProjectWise construction management software.
