Political events during the past decade have caused businesses throughout the world to think globally. Countries once closed to free market enterprises are now open and seeking out foreign investment to help improve the well being of their populations. The mining industry has always been a global one. Today, though, the industry has become even more global. The driving forces behind this include the opening up of higher grade, lower cost mineral deposits in undeveloped and developing nations. In addition, permitting delays in the United States, coupled with stricter environmental guidelines and a general anti-mining attitude, have forced the mining industry to look outside US borders. The Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) took as the theme of its seventh annual professional program "Economic Globalization of the Mining Industry." About 100 people attended the conference held in Arlington, VA in late March. Speakers included members of the investment community, academia, government and the mining industry.

"Coal and coal byproducts produced annually contain enough rare earth elements (REEs) to meet current U.S. demand. The REEs exist in the form of minerals, ion-exchanged elements associated with clays and chemically bonded elements within the organic coal matrix. Researchers at three universities have collaborated to evaluate the effectiveness of existing physical and chemical concentration processes for the recovery of the REEs. The efforts have found that physical separation processes can increase the total REE content in the thickener underflow material collected from a Central Appalachian coal cleaning facility from around 300 ppm to values greater than 17,500 ppm on an ash basis. On the other hand, leaching was effective in recovering REEs from coarse middlings materials collected from multiple coal basins as indicated by recovery values exceeding 80%. Based on material characterization data and process evaluations conducted for several potential feed coal sources, economic recovery of the REEs will require byproduct production of both clean coal and REE concentrate using a process flowsheet that is unique for each source. INTRODUCTION Recent studies initiated by NETL showed that U.S. coals contain significant amounts of rare earth elements (REEs), suggesting that rare earth minerals (REMs) and/or REEs can be produced as byproducts [1]. According to the report, the richest source of REEs is the Central Appalachian coal. At present, there are 208 coal preparation plants located in the region (WV, KY, PA, VA, AL, TN) with a capacity of 166,495 tons/hr or more than 1 billion tons annually [2]. If only a portion of these plants are retrofitted with advanced separation processes, the U.S. coal industry can become a significant producer of RE minerals as byproducts. An inherent advantage of becoming a byproduct producer of REEs is that no mining cost needs to be part of the product cost. Other researchers have also shown that coal can be a significant source of REEs. The average sum of the rare earth plus yttrium (REY) concentration of the world coal is approximately 68.5 ppm, which is lower than the corresponding upper crustal concentration (UCC) (168.4 ppm). However, the average REY content of the mineral matter in the world (404 ppm) and U.S. coals (517 ppm) are 3 times higher than the average UCC. Some of the mineral matter in Russian and Chinese coals have REY concentrations in the range of 0.68 to 2.03% and contain a better source of higher value REYs than many primary rare earth deposits [3]."

China was nota factor in the supply of fluorspar to the United States until the early 1980's when it shipped in its first package of Metallurgical lump, that not only was higher grade than the Mexican Metallurgical spar but was also about $30.00 a ton cheaper landed at Burnside. Representatives of the Mexican Fluorspar Institute and several producers made trips to see the Chinese operations supplying their once reserved market place. China, an enigma to most Westerners suddenly became the new contender, with prices that were disgustingly low or so thought the other exporters. Of course China has been mining, producing, consuming and exporting from 400,000 to 500,000 tons per year of various grades of fluorspar but until the first partloads came to the U.S., very little attention was paid to their exports by American-continent producers or consumers.

The authors outline the development and application of blasting methods put into use 11 years ago at the Berkeley Open-Pit Mine, Butte, Montana. The blast design uses a very short delay (5 milliseconds) between detonation of explosives charges, a feature challenged several times in principle despite its success for Anaconda. Concern is expressed over the categorical rejection of very short delay blasting which can make the difference between success and failure of major mining operations. There is ample evidence to show that the method can be used successfully and not violate the concerns of the public.

"Complex geology requires innovative approaches to confidently and appropriately model grade and geologic trends. Local Anisotropy Kriging (LAK), by Isaaks and Company, and MineSight® Dynamic Unfolding (MSDU) from Hexagon Mining are advanced interpolation methods designed to best estimate grade along deformed three-dimensional grade trends at sediment-hosted deposits. While LAK works in Euclidean space for the construction of variograms, kriging weight assignment, and non-linear local interpolation search ellipsoids, MSDU is far more dynamic and can utilize a modeled three-dimensional undulating surface representing a folded grade trend to construct the above mentioned. MSDU was implemented at the sediment-hosted, stratabound Tenke-Fungurume mining district and revealed major block-to-block differences in interpolated copper and cobalt grades compared to LAK. INTRODUCTION Grade estimation is the cornerstone of long-range mine planning. Pit designs, metal recovery, mining costs, reserves calculations and reporting are all dependent upon a reliable grade model. If the geology is poorly understood or the interpolation methods and parameters have been haphazardly constructed, then massive financial losses will be the inevitable outcome. Therefore, a properly trained geologist must use all of the appropriate tools available including deposit knowledge and advances in modeling technology to construct the most geostatistically and practically sound long-range block model. Certain deposits, such as the sediment-hosted deposits at Tenke-Fungurume, require an interpolation method that best suites the style of mineralization. In 2014, Hexagon Mining developed a tool in MineSight called dynamic unfolding (MSDU) that has the potential to improve upon previous Euclidean-based interpolation methods. MSDU utilizes the non-stationarity of a folded grade trend to more accurately construct variograms and improve interpolation results based upon a modeled three-dimensional surface. Geology Overview The sediment-hosted Tenke-Fungurume mining district is located in the southeastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Figure 1). The rocks within the district are primarily dolomites and shales from the lower half of the Roan Supergroup that were mineralized by ascending pregnant copper and cobalt rich brines within a massive sedimentary basin (Cailteux et al., 2005) (Figure 2). These oxidized brines likely found a fluid channel in the porous RSC unit. The surrounding rock units provided a redox boundary for copper and cobalt precipitation along organic rich beds, forming a massive stratabound deposit that was later broken up by several subsequent tectonic events (Dewaele et al., 2006). Layering and Block Orientations To capture the bedding-controlled nature of the Tenke-Fungurume copper and cobalt mineralization, each lithology type must be subdivided into individual layers with a uniform thickness (Figure 3). The thickness of each layer is determined by the user, but should equal the bench height to achieve maximum resolution within each lithology type. Composites are back coded from the model to achieve layer codes that match block locations."

"The electrokinetic and flotation behaviors of ilmenite using lead ions as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector were studied. The results of microflotation show that the flotability of ilmenite can be improved by lead ions obviously. The isoelectric point of ilmenite increases from 5.32 to 7.7 after the addition of lead ions because of the adsorption of Pb2+ and Pb(OH)+. The results of zeta potential measurements and the collector adsorption density calculation show that the adsorption of sodium oleate on the ilmenite surface via chemisorptions in addition to electrostatic interactions. Besides, the adsorption density calculation results show that as the addition of lead ions as the activator, the adsorption amounts of collector are greater than those without activation which is in aggrement with the flotation behaviors. INTRODUCTION Ilmenite, as an oxide mineral of formula FeTiO3, is usually used as the main resource of the extraction of titanium (Bulatovic and Wyslouzil, 1999). There are many researches showing that the conventional methods, such as gravity separation, magnetic separation and flotation, do not work efficiently as expected (Mehdilo et al., 2015; Zhu et al., 2011). Nowadays, to produce ilmenite concentration feasibly and efficiently, these separation methods above are combined for a reason that the raw ilmenite ores are characteristic of poor, fine and complicated. Moreover, surface modification, such as surface dissolution method, microwave irradiation and oxidation roasting, is applied to improve the flotability of ilmenite currently (Welham and Llewellyn, 1998; Zhang and Ostrovski, 2002). Generally, fatty acid salts are used as the collector for the flotation of oxide minerals and sodium oleate is usually used as the collector for the flotation of imenite ores (Fuerstenau and Pradip, 2005). The mechanism, such as individual ion electrostatic adsorption, chemical adsorption, ion–molecule dimeric complex adsorption, and the coadsorption of ion and molecule, have not been discussed systematically using sodium oleate as the collector in the flotation of ilmenite (Somasundaran, 1983). Under the activation circumstance using the lead ion as the activator and sodium oleate as the collector, the interaction mechanism seems to be still unclear. In the present study, the interaction mechanism between ilmenite and sodium oleate using lead ion as the activator are studied by microflotation, zeta potential measurements and adsorption density calculation. EXPERIMENTAL Materials and reagents Pure ilmenite minerals were obtained from Panzhihua, Sichuan province, China. The minerals were ground in a porcelain mill with an agate ball. Following that, the prosucts were sieved, and the samples of -0.074+0.038 mm size fraction were used for the microflotation experiments. The results of XRF show that the content of titanium element is 30.58%, showing that the purity of ilmenite is above 90%. On the basis of the results of XRF, it is determined that the purity of ilmenite is very high and meets the needs of microflotation"

Mechanical raise and tunnel boring are new techniques to most of the mining industry. Coal, salt and potash have been bored economically, but until recently boring machines were not designed specifically for rock boring in underground mining. The construction industry has led the field of rock boring since 1854 when the first tunnel boring machines built by James S. Robbins and Associates went to work at Oahe Dam, South Dakota. Since that time the company has built boring machines for tunneling through ground conditions varying from cohesionless soil to hard rock, and in diameters ranging from 7 feet to 36 feet 8 inches. It is natural that the construction industry got the jump on mining with the use of mechanical rock boring equipment. Mines have looked for the long range answer to problems of underground excavation and they have chosen proved and established techniques they expect to employ for the next ten or twenty years. The mine development was laid out to accommodate these techniques.

Flexible synthetic membrane liners have become a standard facet to copper and gold heap leach pad design. While gold heap leach operations have utilized most types of synthetic liners, copper leach operations have commonly only been lined with polyethylene. The objective of this study was to determine if there are any chemical reasons why other synthetic membrane types could not be used to line a copper heap leach facility. With engineered consideration, the flexible membrane liner under the ore pile serves two purposes. The first provides a near impermeable boundary which aides greatly in the collection of the metal laden process solution. The second advantage to the flexible membrane is the almost non-permeable barrier to benefit increased environmental awareness that has led to an increase in solution containment technology. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has developed a compatibility test for solutions and membrane liners. The EPA Method 9090 is intended for use in determining the chemical effects of a solution on the physical properties of the flexible membrane liner material intended to contain them. Data from these tests would assist in deciding whether a given liner material is acceptable for the intended application.

Iran possesses very large copper resources, estimated to contain around 4-5% of the world's known copper inventory. There are several small private sector copper mining operating in the country, but Iran's copper industry is dominated by the state-owned National Iranian Copper Industries Company, which operates the world-class Sar-Cheshmeh open-pit Mine. This mine was developed in 1970s before the 1979 Islamic Revelation by the Atlantic Richfield Company (ARCO), the former Anaconda Copper Mining Company. Current Iran?s copper cathode production is about 250,000 mtpa and recently it is targeted to reach to 700.000 t by 2014. The required finance for this target is estimated US $2.25 -b, i.e. US $5000 for each tonne capacity. The copper content of the mineable reserves of the country is estimated about 19 Mt. It is not unlikely this amount increases in close future. Currently, almost 30 projects consist of mine, concentrator, smelter, refinery, acid plant, leaching, bio-leaching are underway. These projects are a golden opportunity for the local and foreign companies, but the recent sanctions are very challenging that all studied in this paper.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Shortwall mining is one of the newest mining meth¬ods to be introduced into the world coal industry. The technique of shortwalling seems to have a number of origins, but it is generally agreed that it is an outgrowth of pillar-and-stall mining where timbering was employed as the primary means of roof support. In early opera¬tions the face was undercut by a shortwall cutter, hand¬bored, and blasted. The coal was loaded by hand or gathering arm loader. Australia, having experienced success with this method, advanced the technique through the use of mechanized roof supports in 1968. Although there were several attempts at shortwalling in the US, it was not until 1973 that Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Federal No. 1 mine successfully extracted a shortwall panel. Table 1 is a list of shortwall opera¬tions in the US as of April 1976. Shortwall mining is a method of mining in which a continuous miner cuts and loads from the short end of a rectangular pillar of coal while hydraulically powered self-advancing roof supports provide protective cover. Characteristics of a shortwall system include panel di¬mensions (Fig. 1) of 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) in length, face widths of 30 to 61 m (100 to 200 ft), straight-line ventilation, and production machinery, with the exception of roof supports, commonly used on con¬tinuous miner units. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS The justification for shortwalling is primarily eco¬nomic, i.e., increased production and recovery concur¬rent with savings in material and labor. The method also has a number of secondary benefits including the much needed progress it has stimulated in deep mine technology, the alternatives it presents to some of the problems resulting from the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, and is perhaps a key to the solution of the enigmatic labor problems which plague the industry. The advantages of shortwall mining over continuous miner units include the following: a highly effective method of ventilation and dust control; a greater per¬centage of extraction (approximately 85%) ; fewer equipment moves, hence more efficient operating time; cost savings on materials such as roof bolts, rock dust, ventilation curtains, timbering materials, and the labor needed to supply, load, and transport these materials; a cyclical pattern of mining, each phase of which, i.e., development and retreat, lasts for approximately three months and appears to be psychologically motivating as well as highly productive; and improved safety. In addition to these positive aspects, a shortwall sys¬tem also has advantages over a longwall system, and these are listed as follows: the capital outlay for a shortwall system is one-third to one-fourth that for a longwall (1976 prices); the shortwall system utilizes equipment that is used on a continuous miner section, with the ex¬ception of the roof support system; there is a great deal of flexibility in areas with numerous gas wells and in areas where surface subsidence cannot be tolerated; the shortwall has reduced tailgate problems, since the tail¬gate entry serves as a return airway only; and the cyclical pattern of mining insures that the mining machinery pro¬duces coal even while the roof support system is being moved to another panel. There are several parameters which govern the se¬lection and use of a shortwall system. They are all of equal importance, and hence are not listed in any par¬ticular order. These are deposit size, seam height, seam inclination, roof and floor conditions, depth of over¬burden, subsidence and chain pillar extraction, man¬power, ventilation, and materials handling. Deposit Size Reserves available for shortwalling should be suffi¬cient for at least an eight to ten-year period, since this seems to be the effective life, without rebuilding, of a hydraulic roof support under average conditions. In September 1992, mining in Mexico was opened again to foreign investment by President Salinas-de Gortari, after thirty years of "Mexicanization" of mining industry which limited foreign participation up to a 49 % (or 34 % in case of national reserves) on a Mexican mining corporation. During said period mining in Mexico was controlled by four or five big mining companies and besides mining production was focused mainly on silver, lead, zinc, copper and fluorspar. Oxides are important for use in the production of metals, ceramic hardware, paints, permanent magnets, magnetic recording tapes and many other uses. In some of these applications, particle morphology, degree of crystallinity, purity, and homogeneity are relatively insignificant, while for other uses, these same properties are of critical importance. Many conventional processes are based upon recovery of the oxides from aqueous solutions by processes which include neutralization, evaporation of solvent, and precipitation of a complex salt. Consequently, many of these techniques lead to oxides of low quality. There is a growing demand for oxides of high quality, i.e., materials with narrow particle size distribution, controlled particle morphology, high purity, few structural defects, and high degree of crystallinity and homogeneity. This demand has prompted industry to search for new approaches for the manufacture of these special materials. One new approach for preparing high quality oxides is hydrothermal precipitation. This process has been used for preparing simple oxides such as ZrO2; mixed oxides such as ZrO2-SiO2; and complex oxides such as BaTiO3. These oxides were prepared in a high state of purity with a high degree of crystallinity and., in many cases, without the addition of precipitants. Many impurities- that are normally precipitated by conventional methods such as neutralization present no problem since they remain in solution. Nature of the process and its applications are discussed in this article.

Heavy metal ions exist in waste effluents including mining tailings, manufacturing discharges, and smelting and metal plating process wastes. Various methods are available to treat industrial effluents containing high levels of metal ions, but when confronted with wastewater that has low metal ion concentration below 500 mg/L, most techniques suffer from low removal or separation efficiency as well as high operating cost. ELM-based techniques can be used to solve these problems.

Crucial information about safety, design, and operation can be utilized in underground mines from ground movement data. Communicating the information and exploring new findings can be a challenge in a decade where there is an ever-increasing volume and velocity of data due to advancements in mining technologies. This challenge escalates for geotechnical data as it is multidimensional, depending on the space and the rate it takes place. To tackle this challenge, geotechnical engineers should focus on utilizing simple yet compelling visualization of rock mass data in 3D. Competent visualizations of ground conditions as a Trigger Action and Response Plan (TARP) could ease the communication of safety concerns and the exploration of rock mass displacement and strain surrounding an opening at an underground mine. Therefore, this study focuses on using scientific visualization methods by rendering geotechnical data over the surface of a 3D mesh model to display TARP levels. The study is conducted at the San Xavier (SX) Underground Mine Laboratory’s East decline. The project aims to produce visualizations that optimize the use of geotechnical data in near-real-time.

"The supply chain for coal-fired power stations involve a multi-stage network of mining units, preparation plants, blending facilities and transportation systems. Attempts to optimize the supply chain have historically been difficult due to the lack of communication/coordination between the various groups involved in coal production, transportation and utilization. In light of this issue, a new approach for globally optimizing the coal supply chain called Micro-Price Optimization has been developed to simplify the optimization problem and to provide coal producers with fundamental insight needed to improve the profitability of their operations. This fundamental concept assigns unit values to each particles (or groups of particles) passing through production units. Optimization occurs whenever the maximum tonnage of positive value particles are recovered and passed to market, while the minimum tonnage of negative value particles are recovered. Elements considered by the concept include factors such as target boiler cost/efficiency, waste disposal costs, coal quality parameters, emission penalties, transportation charges, or other quantifiable impact factors. This article reviews the basis for the micro-price concept and provides a detailed industrial case study involving the determination of optimum coal qualities that need to be supplied by mine operators to feed a coal-fired power station. INTRODUCTION The performance of coal preparation plants have long been known to play an important role in determining the overall profitability of mining operations. This significance is due to the fact that the misplacement of just 1 ton/hr of clean coal to reject resulting from poor plant performance can represent nearly $300,000 per year in lost revenues for a mine producing a steam market coal (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $50/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $300,000/yr). This loss can be even more pronounced, occasionally approaching $1 million per year for each 1 ton/hr of misplaced clean coal, for operations producing high-quality coking coal products sold into the premium metallurgical market (i.e., 1 ton/hr x $150/ton x 6,000 hr/yr = $900,000/yr). Detailed economic studies indicate that improvements in plant yield resulting from increases in organic efficiency have one of the largest overall impacts on mine revenue when compared to other cost centers within the mining operation. One of the first studies to show this important financial impact was reported by Norton-Hambleton Consultants (Norton, 1979). Their study indicated that an unfavorable change in plant efficiency was second only to coal transportation in terms of its impact on profitability, while an unfavorable change in the cost of underground mining was a distance third. This longstanding realization has continued to provide a strong financial incentive for coal producers to optimize the separation efficiency of their coal processing and blending operations."

The problem of fine coal slimes has been addressed in a unique way at A. T. Massey Coal?Company. Several plants have employed two-stage classifying cyclones to separate the minus 1 mm raw coal into 3 sizes. Larger cyclones make the initial cut at approximately 150 µ (100?mesh) sending the underflow to a cleaning circuit (usually spirals) while the overflow is pumped to a secondary cyclone circuit using smaller cyclones. The small cyclones make a cut at near 70 µ (200 mesh) and produce an underflow that is a des limed flotation feed. The overflow is discarded to refuse due to its high ash and superfine size which would produce a high moisture product even if suitably recovered.

"Horizontal stress can have a profound effect on the stability of an underground limestone mine. The presence of horizontal stress is usually determined once the mine has been developed and the orientation of headers and crosscuts are well established. Multiple attempts are typically made to control roof falls without re-orienting the mine. Once the decision has been made to change the orientation, pillar centers, mine opening widths, and the question of how to determine the correct orientation must be answered.A case history is presented to illustrate how geologic structure, ground conditions and roof falls in adjacent mines, the World Stress Map (Heidbach et al., 2016), in-mine measurement of “cutter” roof orientation, the orientation of strata offset (cats eyes) within borescope holes, and the diametral deviation method of determining horizontal strain from drill core were used to establish the most likely range of horizontal stress.The main headers were re-orientated in a direction parallel to the median of the range of horizontal stress. The crosscuts were angled 60° to the headers to avoid being perpendicular to the horizontal stress direction. Pillar centers and opening widths were increased in the favorable stress direction of the mains and decreased in the less favorable crosscut orientation. The major principal horizontal stress magnitude was estimated using the strain measurements from the diametral deviation method and elastic modulus obtained through testing.INTRODUCTIONOver the past decade, there has been a significant increase in the number of underground stone mining operations in the United States. As stripping ratios at surface quarries become uneconomical and reach the extent of the mineral boundary, coupled with the encroachment of urban development on previously rural mining operations, the remaining mine reserves are best accessed through underground development.Although the majority of underground limestone mines in the Midwest are in relatively flat lying deposits with minimal geologic structure, many Appalachian mines are in folded and faulted environments. Tectonic horizontal stresses associated with multiple orogenic episodes are locked in the formation and are released as the underground mine is developed.A common misconception is that horizontal stress impacts are more prevalent at shallow depths where the ratio of horizontal to vertical stress may be high. However, field observations and academic research indicates that horizontal stress conditions may be encountered at any depth due to the tectonic compression of the limestone formation (Esterhuizen et al., 2007; Dolinar and Esterhuizen, 2007; Iannacchione et al., 2003; Slaker, Murphy, and Miller, 2017; Kuhnhein and Ramer, 2004). This paper outlines mine design and layout guidelines for the mitigation of horizontal stress impacts on underground stone mining operations through a case history example. This approach to mine planning and the ability to anticipate horizontal stress can significantly improve future production of multiple levels (Newman and Newman, 2019). As underground stone production continues at deeper depths and in more geologically and geometrically complex mining conditions, an emphasis on ground control and the anticipation of horizontal stress can provide safer and more productive single and multiple level mining operations."

The aim of this study was to develop an integrated approach to enable identification of areas favourable for the presence of massive sulphide deposits in a given region (Las Herrerias, Spain). It is based on geochemical soil exploration, geophysical surveying (ground gravimetry), detailed geological mapping and a knowledge of the deposits of the South Iberian Massive Sulphide Belt. The multi-dataset approach consists, in the first instance, in standardizing and combining all the geochemical data with reference to their geological setting. Next, the "heavy" anomalies are extracted from the gravimetric survey, regardless of the surrounding context (heavy or light). The results from these two stages are then crossed, so that areas where heavy anomalies are associated with geochemical anomalies can be identified and classified. Crossing the geochemical and geophysical data enables a much tighter selection of anomalies than does the manual superposition of data provided by each method (geology, geophysics, geochemistry).

Old mine workings are found throughout the Western United Sates on lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM), U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and private lands. Some of these mine workings date back to the late 1800s. There may be as many as 100,000 sites on lands administered by the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. The Bureau of Land Management has worked with the State of Montana and other agencies to identify and prioritize these sites on BLM administered lands. Following completion of the AML inventory work, the Bureau began an aggressive program to clean up priority sites. This presentation will highlight completed work as well as work in progress on several sites.
