Longwall coal mining in southern Illinois occurs beneath some of the best agricultural land in the U.S. This region is characterized by highly productive, nearly level, and somewhat poorly drained soils. Subsidence from longwall mining causes changes in surface topography which alters surface and subsurface hydrology. These changes can adversely affect agricultural land by creating wet or ponded areas that can be deleterious to crop production. While most subsided areas show little impact from subsidence, some areas experience total crop failure. Coal companies are required by law to mitigate subsidence damage to cropland. The objective of this study was to test the effectiveness of mitigation in restoring grain yields to their pre-mined levels. The research was conducted on sites selected to represent conventional mitigation techniques on the predominate soils in the area. Corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max.(L.) Merr] yields in 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1991 from mitigated areas were compared to yields from nearby undisturbed areas. There was no significant (a=0.05) difference in soybean yields averaged over the four years. Average corn yields, however, were significantly lower than reference areas. The impact of subsidence and mitigation is variable and site specific. Results were also related to weather. In wet years, yields in mitigated areas tended to be depressed. This research demonstrated that mitigation of subsidence damage can be successful.

A potentially cost effective technique for the reclamation of heavy metal contaminated soils and sediments involves the technique of froth flotation. Heavy metals sorbed to clays in the soil may be sulfidized by the introduction of sodium sulfide and floated using a dithiophosphate collector. Separations were obtained where up to 78% of all copper ion was removed from the system. Selected samples were floated in a column cell but little advantage was seen.

In 1960, Magnetics International Ltd. undertook the development of the Jones High Intensity Wet Magnetic Separator in the Americas. Magnetics International had a number of possible applications in its own projects plus the intention of developing the equipment for sale to others. It was soon recognized that no matter how innovative a piece of mineral separation equipment may be, it takes many years and much finance before it is finally accepted for large scale use. For this reason, many good ideas die in their infancy. One of the chief reasons for such a time lag between conception and large scale implementation is the usual lack of finance to construct and put into operation a large demonstration unit. Even with a large unit for demonstration, the first major user usually requires a guarantee that is not normal in accepted separation equipment. Such problems are also normally accompanied by major design changes from the first conception.

Engineers at the Freeman United Coal Min¬ing Company, located in West Frankfort, Illinois, have been using a computerized production planning and maintenance reporting system, which have been designed exclusively for underground coal mining. This paper will explain a dynamic graphical simulation and computerized time study system that has been used to design and evaluate underground production systems for optimizing productivity. Also with the aid of customized software, detailed records on changeable components of underground equipment, including the vendor's name, date installed, operating and maintenance hours, etc., have helped Management to select the best available components for their equipment. The MPASS System, Mine Performance Analysis Simulation System, developed through a cooperative agreement with Freeman United, Ketron Inc., and the U. S. Department of Energy utilizes new methods to analyze and design production systems in underground coal mines. 1.1 The purpose of this paper is to show the way by which estimates are made of the tonnage and grade of iron ore and taconite reserves of Minnesota. 1.2 The procedures include those of estimating the open pit reserves of: (a) Natural iron ore, and (b) Taconite 1.3 The methods of estimation which will be discussed are primarily based on the information from exploring iron ore deposits. They consider the geology of the deposit as well as the contained mineral of potential value. 2.0 Some geologic, engineering, and economic principles. 2.1 Ore 2.11 "In the broad economic sense, and from a legal standpoint as well, ore is mineralized rock, which under appropriate conditions of time, space, technology, economics, and politics, can be mined, processed, and made to yield a saleable metal , or other mineral products at a profit."(Parks, 1957) Stated differently, metallic ore is rock material from which presently known methods of beneficiation, a merchantable concentrate, suitable for use in the manufacture of metals at a profit, can be produced. Crude ores as low as 0.38% metal, as in the case of copper and even lower in the case of the precious metals.

Hydrometallurgical production of zinc from concentrates is generally carried out by H2SO4 leaching. For the smooth operation of this process, some harmful components must be removed from the leach solution before the electrolysis stage; MgO is one of these compounds. Zinc concentrate samples from the Mount Isa mines were used in leaching tests. Leaching tests with an aqueous solution of H2SO4 and SO2 gas were carried out at various temperatures, pH levels and leaching durations. While duration and the pH value of the solution were effective parameters in H2SO4 leaching, temperature and pH were more effective in SO2 leaching for the removal of MgCO3 and CaCO3. Removal of MgCO3 and CaCO3 was generally achieved at low pH values. The results show that SO2 gas can be a good alternative to sulfuric acid in the leaching of MgCO3 and CaCO3

Blockchains are one of the prominent disruptive technologies that are being implemented in several disciplines. The application of blockchains in the mining and mineral industry can provide utility for several processes especially when the industry is undertaking digital transformation. The governing principles of blockchain technology are applicable in undertaking transformation in several processes within the mining industry. This study investigates the applications of blockchain technology within the realms of the mining industry and identifies key areas of implementation. A systematic review of publications on academic platforms relating to blockchain technology in the mining industry did not retrieve a considerable number of articles. Consequently, a thorough review of white papers and articles authored by individuals on use cases within the mining industry is compiled and presented in this manuscript. This paper identifies all the potential areas within the mining industry where blockchains could provide value and improve processes through their implementation. The broad area of implementation of blockchains includes supply chain, traceability in spare parts, contract management, regulatory compliance, and cyber security.

Chemical zoning studies of mineralization can be useful in guiding exploration efforts. They permit one to determine the limits of mineralization and to correlate mineralized intervals in drill holes. Fahlore minerals are well suited for zoning studies because they are common minerals found in a variety of deposits, exhibit chemical diversity, and record the chemical evolution of migrating hydrothermal fluids. Zoning information in the form of metal ratios preserved in fahlore minerals was used to determine ore body limits in the Orcopampa precious metal system, Peru, and to correlate between multiple ore horizons in a sediment hosted massive sulfide (SHMS) currently under investigation. The current generations of electron microprobes provide the most efficient, accurate and economic way to analyze the tens to hundreds of sample required to successfully describe and use zoning information at the mine scale.

Rheinbraun AG, Germany, is the management company of the mining and raw materials division of RWE AG. Rheinbraun's core business and major functional area is opencast lignite mining in the Rhineland. The characteristic feature of opencast mining is continuous operation using bucket-wheel excavators, belt conveyors, and spreaders. The report gives a survey of the conveyor systems used. In addition to the general performance data of these belt conveyors, this report will deal in particular with major components, such as drive stations and individual mechanical components (e.g., conveyor belts, pulleys, gears, couplings, brakes, scrapers), as well as monitoring systems. Finally, an assessment of the conveyor systems, together with future developments, will be given.

The disposal of sludges and other similar industrial wastes is a major problem. Liquid wastes from industrial operations, when treated, produce significant volumes of sludge which are difficult to dispose of, because of the chemical and physical properties of the sludge. In the mining industry sludge is produced from various water treatment operations, in particular mine drainage neutralization. Waste water from coal preparation plants also produces a sludge however the sludge is in fact a slurry containing clays, coal fines and coal impurities. In many areas the disposal of these sludges is producing a serious problem. Pennsylvania has 2500 miles of streams that do not meet water quality standards due to acid mine discharge (AMD), making AMD the greatest cause of water pollution in the state. The problem is mainly caused by abandoned coal mines. Pennsylvania is using a watershed-based approach to abating AMD which includes remining as a key component of a comprehensive restoration strategy. The Tangascootack Creek Watershed was targeted for AMD restoration through remining. Geologic mapping and overburden data were analyzed using Earth Vision software to identify areas of coal reserves which could be remined to improve water quality. Incentives are offered to encourage mining in these designated areas.

The 16-to-1 milling operation is Sunshine Mining Company's first new silver and gold producing facility. The 16-to-1 underground mine and mill are located approximately 64 km (40 miles) southwest of Tonopah, Nevada. Ore re- serves in the epithermal vein deposit are estimated at 0.91 Mt (one million st) of ore, at an average silver grade of 206 to 240 g/t (6 to 7 oz/st) and an average gold grade of 1.2 g/t (0.035 oz/st). The underground mine uses a large diameter blasthole stoping system of mining using highly mechanized rubber-tired equipment. The mill uses conventional cyanide leaching with countercurrent decantation and Merrill-Crowe precipitation. The mill start-up was in February 1982 resulting in the first pour of dore' in March 1982. The mill's present annual production is approximately 31.1 t (1.0 million oz) of silver and 264 kg (8500 oz) of gold.

One of the most energy-intensive processes for producing submicron range calcite is stirred media mill. In the present work, numerous operating parameters such as solid mass fraction, grinding media size, media filling ratio, and grinding time have been investigated using a vertical type stirred media mill. The results are evaluated on the basis of mean particle size, specific surface area, and specific energy consumption. After conducting this study, optimum experimental conditions found to be as 70% media filling ratio, 25% solid mass fraction, 1 mm grinding media size, and 120 min grinding time. Besides, energy savings up to 22% were achieved with the choice of proper media size.

New methods for remediating metals-contaminated groundwater include in-situ emplacement of highly adsorptive substrates to permanently retard solutes. Substrates are introduced by sequential injection of soluble components that precipitate in the aquifer, forming a permanent high-retardation zone. This method overcomes the factors that limit pump-and-treat remediation; i.e, long-term source loading and slow desorption. Column tests demonstrated efficient substrate emplacement, increasing retardation coefficients of Cr(VI) by 20 and As(V) by 40. Similar effectiveness is expected for other heavy metals. Simulations using a coupled advective-geochemical model accurately matched substrate emplacement and arsenic attenuation, allowing extrapolation to other constituents and larger-scale applications.

Our industry is in trouble. Real trouble. It has never been an easy, secure business. But to-day it is engulfed in revolutionary currents. No longer can there be reliance upon the checks and balances of market forces. Supply and demand largely dictated the economics of business enterprise in simpler days. To-day politics, in particular nationalism become increasingly dominant. And as governments expand and put out tentacles of interference in the direction of the mining industry, far too little understanding is evidenced as to how that industry works. Then there is something which is relatively new -stagflation. As the prices of minerals falls, the capital investment required for new extractive facilities soars at rates which far outdistance those which are cited by governments to indicate the magnitude of inflation. To illustrate; 1) In 1971 it was calculated that $355 million would be required to bring the Cuajone property in Peru into production. Five years later that stage was reached at a cost of $680 million. 2) With the Caridad mine in Mexico, estimated capital investment doubled between 1971 and 1976. 3) The requirements calculated for Cerro Colorado in Panama have risen in two years from $560 to $800. 4) The budget of $240 million for Sar Chesmeh in Iran in 1971 had become $500 million by 1976.

"Diesel engines are one of the primary contributors to the presence of nano and ultrafine aerosols in ambient air and occupational environments. Exposure to diesel emissions has been shown to contribute to various adverse health outcomes of the pulmonary system and cardiovascular system. Currently diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by way of collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a lab for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH 5040 method, which measures elemental and organic carbon explicitly. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM) before the problem is identified. To remedy this, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) are seeking to develop a field-portable method for measuring elemental and organic carbon in DPM aerosols. In the current study, we investigated the use of Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, which lends itself more readily to implementation in a real-time system than do the thermal-optical analysis methods. We have demonstrated a method for measuring organic and elemental carbon in DPM for a broad range of organic carbon (OC) to elemental carbon (EC) ratios (from 50.3 to 0.8). The ability to handle a wide range of OC to EC ratios is critical given the evolving diesel technology. INTRODUCTION Respiratory illnesses are common in mining industry workers [1] and exposures to toxic aerosols such as DPM can result in serious respiratory illness [2]. Health studies show a correlation between workplace exposure to diesel exhaust and an increased risk of lung cancer [3-8]. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has characterized diesel exhaust as a human carcinogen [9], and similar classifications have been made by the World Health Organization and the California Air Resource Board. A recent study [10] suggests that the risk of lung cancer is approximately three times greater for heavily exposed workers. When compared to other aerosols in the mine environment, the settling time of DPM is significantly longer than that of dust due to their small particle size (typically < 1 µm) [11]. Additionally, submicron particles (such as DPM) are deposited in the lungs much more efficiently than their larger counterparts such as dust [12]. Previous studies focusing on particle morphology [13] show that the largest mass contributor to lung disease in mining is elemental carbon, which provides a solid core onto which hydrocarbons are adsorbed. In accord with those findings the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) decided on submicron total carbon as a surrogate for monitoring diesel particulate matter in the mining environment."

Froth flotation technique is an effective and efficient process for recovering of ultra-fine (minus 74 pm) clean coal. Economical dewatering of an ultra-fine clean coal product to a 20 percent level moisture will be an important step in successful implementation of the advanced cleaning processes. This study is a step in the Department of Energy&apos;s program to show that ultra-clean coal could be effectively dewatered to 20 percent or lower moisture using either conventional or advanced dewatering techniques. The main focus of the pilot plant study was on proof-of-concept testing of a dewatering technique for a fine clean coal product. The coal industry is reluctant to use the advanced fine coal recovery technology due to the non-availability of an economical dewatering process.

This study seeks to define the mechanism of oxyanion sorption onto surfactant-modified zeolites. Zeolites which have been treated with hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (HDTMA) surfactant to produce a hydrophobic surface are capable of sorbing both organic compounds as well as oxyanions such as chromate, selenate, and sulfate. Simple ion exchange and charge-balancing mechanisms do not fully explain this unusual phenomenon. The sorption of HDTMA surfactant appears to be partly ion exchange and partly sorption to non-ion-exchangeable sites. Sorption of chromate is a simple exchange mechanism with bromide, which co-adsorbs with HDTMA to form a surface precipitate. Information from this study will be used to design on-site and in situ treatment systems for contaminated water, such as filter beds and permeable barriers.

Two types of hydrothermal massive sulfide fields were discovered in the Mid-Atlantic ridge (MAR) in the last twenty years. The first type associates with basalts and includes the TAG, Snakepit, Broken Spur, Lucky Strike and Krasnov hydrothermal fields. The second type is related to ultramafic rocks and represented by the Logatchev, Rainbow and Ashadze hydrothermal fields. In 2007 a new, probably, the largest cluster of hydrothermal massive sulfide field on the MAR (Fig. 1), related both to basaltic and ultramafic rocks, was discovered at 13°31&apos;N of the MAR (Beltenev et al., 2007). A significant news item appearing in a coal mining journal in November 1969 stated simply that a Caterpillar D-333-CNA engine had received Bureau of Mines Schedule 31 approval. This item occurring at the time a new mining property in Martin County of East Kentucky was being prospected and prepared for mining, resulted in the manage-ment of Martin County Coal Corporation asking the question, "Why not use diesel equipment in our new operation?" Martin County Coal Corporation is part of the A. T. Massey Coal Company, Incorporated organization. The property being developed is on a 17,500 acre leasehold obtained from Pocahontas Land Corporation and lies in the Wolf Creek area of Martin County. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this undeveloped section of Kentucky to tap a huge reserve of steam coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all of the production from Martin County Coal Corporation mines which ultimately is projected to be 2,000,000 tons annually. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton are being deep mined now and it is in those mines that the diesel haulage equipment was introduced. This paper will endeavor to trace the steps loading to the introduction of the first diesel-powered Wagner Mining Equipment Company ScoopTram in a coal mine in America. It will further elaborate on the features which make this unit a very versatile and useful utility unit as well as the safety features which are incorporated in the machine.
