The Gosowong epithermal quartz-adularia vein, in the Halmahera magmatic arc, is a new discovery in an area of primary tropical rain forest with no history of gold mining or mineralization. The newly recognized mineral district also contains a number of other epithermal vein systems, two centres of porphyry Cu-Au mineralization, and a number of argillic and advanced argillic alteration zones that may be related to underlying mineralization. Gosowong was discovered and tested through the application of basic exploration techniques including drainage sampling, soil sampling, trenching, magnetics, IP, and diamond drilling. Lapse time from the initial reconnaissance discovery of a stream sediment anomaly to the release of inferred resource estimates of approximately 1.0m ounces was just over 3 years.

In order to filter small amounts of fine slimy solids the reversible cake-filtration process was developed. The filterable solids contents lion in feeds can range from less than 1 ppm up to about 5%. The relative advantages of this process, are usually the greatest in the range of 0.05% to 1.0% filterable solids. Filterable solids that average in particle size about 20 microns& are non-compressible are very easy for this filtration process. Some feeds have been all sub-micron in particle size. A 1/8 inch thick cake is considered to be very thick. The usual cake is between 13/2 and 1/16 inch thick. A new line of injection molded plastic filter plates were developed for use with the reversible cake filtration process. The first commercial sized installation of this system was made 3 years ago in the Wakefield Y.M.C.A. swimming pool. Over 70 filters ranging in size from one plate to 63 plates have been produced. In addition to the process advantages there are the low cost and corrosion resistance advantages of the plastic plates.

The required reclamation of land disturbed by surface coal mining often results in the creation of some over steepened slopes which are prone to rapid erosion and sediment production. This natural activity on such slopes is not desirable nor allowed under current regulations. Experience has indicated that novel approaches must be devised to address the problem. Research conducted on field sites in Missouri has indicated that construction, during the reclamation and grading processes, of a man-made drainage system will control the erosion. The drainage system must replicate or exceed the natural system in terms of drainage density and channel frequency. Basic design considerations will be summarized in this paper and field results shown.

Despite numerous empirical, numerical, and hybrid studies conducted on the subject of coal rib failure, mine fatalities related to rib failures continue to occur. To date, a standard methodology for the design of coal rib supports which can accommodate the wide range of unique conditions found in coal mines in the United States has not been developed, forcing mine operators to rely on the trial-and-error process or industrial legacy practices for the design of coal rib support patterns. In this study, to better understand the support systems' effectiveness, various rib bolting scenarios were investigated. A coal mass constitutive model is implemented to a Distinct Element Method (DEM) code, and rib factor-of-safety (RibFOS) analyses were performed by applying strength-reduction for the coal matrix and explicitly modeled face cleats. Ribs with various overburden depths and mining heights composed of solid Banded-Bright coal (BBC) were considered in this study. Different scenarios such as rib bolt length and the number of bolts were studied to quantify the effect of primary rib support density on rib stability. As a result of the unsupported coal rib analyses, a decaying exponential relationship is proposed between the mining height-overburden depth and the RibFOS. The developed coal rib models clearly show the coal-rib bolt interaction and illustrate how the addition of rib bolts restricts the movement of the coal rib. The results reveal that the strength reduction method in DEM code with the coal-mass model can aid in the development of practical primary support charts, which can help in the rib support design process. Thousands of years ago, Chinese water well drillers developed a technique for punching holes in the ground by lifting massive metal bits and letting them fall against the rock. With diligence, they could pound away about 2 feet a day. The Chinese drillers pounded holes in the ground this way for almost 2000 years. In the 1860's, French water well drillers developed a perforated bit moistened by fluids pumped into the hole through a hollow rod. The fluids carried the cuttings from the hole and spared the Frenchmen the task of bailing them out by hand.

It has long been understood that extended occupational exposures to respirable mine dusts can lead to chronic lung disease. In underground coal mines, coal workers pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis are major concerns. While many efforts have been made with the aim of understanding the mass-based concentrations and silica contents of respirable dusts under a variety of mining conditions, little research has been completed in characterizing dust at the individual particle level (by composition, size and shape). This study employed scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray (SEM-EDX) to analyze dust samples collected from an underground coal mine in Central Appalachia. The results indicated that particle characteristics can vary widely between locations, though many trends might be explained based on knowledge of mining conditions. A continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) was also used during the collection of some samples to determine respirable dust concentrations, which were compared against estimated concentrations based on the particle-level analysis.

Rock bolts are highly important underground to prevent falls of ground and thus, ensure safety. In situ, the ground reinforcement is subjected to a combination of loads, such as shear, tensile, and/or bending loads. Studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of either shear, tensile, or bending loads on the ground support. However, only a few studies have been done to evaluate the effect of combined load on the rock bolt performance. In situ, the order of loads acting on the bar cannot be predicted, and more than one load can act on the bar at the same time. Thus, a hybrid failure criterion was developed that covered all combined loading conditions. Fifty-eight un-grouted laboratory rock bolt tests were conducted in total under two load conditions: applying shear displacement to the rock bolt and then tensile load to failure, and applying tensile displacement to the rock bolt and then shear load to failure. From the test results, the failure criterion was developed based on regression analysis. A nonlinear relationship was determined for the loading condition variations. The failure criterion presented in this paper can be used as a guide in the rock bolt capacity design under all loading conditions.

In relation with the construction of the Sölk power station in Steiermark, Austria, tenders were called in October, 1976, for the construction of the 12-km "Donnersbach collector tunnel" by "Steirische Wasserkraftund Elektrizitäts AG". The specified showed both conventional blast tunneling as well as mechanical excavation with a tunneling machine, diameter 3.55 m. Total construction time from the date of the invitation to tender was given as 4 years. Part of the project was the construction of a concrete circular tunnel lining 20 cm thick. In 1977 the contract was awarded to "Arbeitsgemeinschaft Donnersbach", a joint venture formed by two companies, G. Hinteregger & Söhne, Salzburg, and G. Hinteregger, Bregenz. It provided for the project to be carried out with a tunnel boring machine. GEOLOGICAL DATA The entire tunnel was to be bored through a complex of the garnet mica schist group of the Wölz schists formations. These range from highly quartz-bearing to quartzitic mica schists, with thick, discordantly interstratified beds of marble and dolomite. It can be useful to model the mean grade values for a metal in mineral deposits containing that metal as representing the extreme value tail of a lognormal frequency distribution for the concentration values of the metal in rocks of all types. Results for copper and zinc in the Abitibi area of the Canadian Shield are compared to results previously obtained for the Canadian Appalachian Region. The lognormal model is also applied to a set of 162 large gold deposits in the Abitibi area. In the second part of the paper, 1311 large and small gold deposits in the Abitibi area are modelled as discrete events. By means of a newly developed spatial clustering model it is possible to predict the variances of random variables for frequencies of deposits in cells of different sizes.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with U.S. Borax and Chemical Corporation and the Kennecott Copper Corporation, has investigated the use of the microseismic method to evaluate the stability of large, open-pit slope walls. The method is based on the phenomenon that stressed rock normally emits subaudible rock noises, and the number of rock noises per unit time (noise rate) and the magnitude of the rock noises (amplitude) increase as the stresses in the rock approach the failure stress of the rock. Therefore, the detection and recording of those rock noises serve as a semiquantitative method of predicting the incipient failure of rock. This report briefly describes the three different types of microseismic apparatus, the procedures, and the results of microseismic investigations in the slope walls of the Boron Mine near Boron, California, and the Rimbley, Liberty, and Tripp-Veteran open-pit mines near Ely, Nevada. Microsesimic noise rates in stable inactive mining areas are between 0 and 10 noises/ hour; the rates in stable active mining areas are between 10 and 50 noises/hour; and the rate in unstable areas is as high as 2500 noises/ hour. High microseismic noise rates in the Liberty Pit correlate with the time of nearby earthquakes, indicating that the earthquakes affected the slope wall. The results provide evidence that the microseismic tech¬nique is applicable to large pit walls, and that the wide band, wide range microseismic equipment appears to be suitable for open-pit investigations.

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company's Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer's requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. The Great Salt Lake occupies about 1000 square miles whereas its predecessor, Lake Bonneville occupied 20,000 square miles and its shoreline reached 1000 feet above the present lake level. The sediments of Lake Bonneville range from peripheral gravel and sand deposits to central basin calcareous clays and silts, gypsum sands, and saline precipitates. The drilling and engineering tests conducted by the Utah State Department of Highways for many highway structure sites and the construction of Federal Interstate freeway provided engineering and hydrologic properties of Lake Bonneville sediments. Ground water and surface brine exploitation have contributed hydrologic and chemical data; the geologic and mineralogical data are scientific research contributions.

In situ, or in-place leaching is concerned with the extraction of metals from natural mineral disseminations without removal from their geologic location which, in many cases, amounts to the reversal of the deposition process accompanied by a presumed increase in velocity of the processes, if the project is to be profitable. Solution mining processes involve removal of minerals such as sulfur, common salt, and potash, generally leaving cavernous voids, in contrast to in situ leaching which term is applied to the selective dissolution of a mineral from its gangue without sensible disturbance of the formation. Where such a process can be operated, the advantages are manifold and have been so recognized by miners from the earliest days of mining. Recent technological developments have encouraged a reassessment of the status of in situ leaching, and it now appears possible to extend the application of the method from a few isolated special situations to many uranium and copper deposits. Anaconda's interest in the techniques stems from long experience with vat and heap leaching, 'dump leaching, and natural leach activities associated with several established mines. Increasing activity through-out the industry has been noted, particularly in leaching low grade pillars and the peripheral zones of operating mines, often by the introduction of leach solutions via boreholes drilled from surface. Reactivation of dormant mines] using similar techniques has been successful. Over the long term, environmental improvement activity will lead to excess sulfuric acid production, even to a disposal problem. Gold has always fascinated mankind. From Tutankhamen's mask to the huge nuggets that have been found in the Australian outback, gold has quickened the pulse and fevered the eye. But in recent years, governments around the western world have shown a singular lack of interest in research into gold processing, with many programs being cut. There are some notable exceptions, fortunately, and this paper summarizes a large research effort that is well supported by the Australian government and the Australian gold industry. The AJ Parker Cooperative Research Centre for Hydrometallurgy is an unincorporated joint venture between the CSIRO Division of Minerals, Murdoch University, Curtin University of Technology and the Western Australian Department of Minerals and Energy. The Australian Mineral Industry Research Association (AMIRA) is the Parker Centre's broker for generic R&D contracts with industry. Each of the partners makes available staff, students and equipment to further the work of the Parker Centre, and the Australian Government provides additional funding. The Parker Centre is nearly five years old and has grown spectacularly in that time. There are now about 30 full-time-equivalents of effort from 50 scientists and engineers, as well as about 40 postgraduate and honours students. The fundamentals of the key operations in hydrometallurgy are studied in three programs: leaching (which includes pretreatment by roasting etc), precipitation (or crystallisation), and surface processes (which includes solid/liquid separation, adsorption, solvent extraction, etc). A large part of the Parker Centre's R&D is directed towards gold processing technology. In Australia, a dramatic increase in gold production, from about 30 to nearly 300 tonnes per year (1977-1997), has been made possible largely as a result of a brilliant metallurgical innovation, the carbon-in-pulp process. However, falling head grades eg 2.56 to 1.84 g(Au)/t over the last 10 years, and environmental concerns, are squeezing profit margins. There is increasing pressure to reduce costs, and the Parker Centre program is focussed on providing the scientific understanding required to do this. A selection of research highlights will be given, to indicate the depth and breadth of the R&D at the Parker Centre.

In longwall mining, the progressive caving of the roof allows stored energy to dissipate over an extended time. However, in some cases, the roof strata above the longwall panel are unusually strong and do not break with the movement of the working face. Instead, the roof material bridges over the expanse of the longwall, forming an unstable beam. Later, when this beam breaks, the stored energy can release suddenly, causing a seismic event to propagate to surrounding mine workings. The focus of this paper is to estimate the size of beams that form over longwall panels to the seismic energy recorded by the mine. Analytical calculations are used to verify two-dimensional models of longwall roof beams to determine the strain energy and gravitational energy developed, which is then released upon strata failure to surrounding mine workings. Models are developed using RS2 to model the stress, strain, and deflection along the bottom of the longwall roof beam to calculate gravitational and strain energies. Gravitational energy is shown to be the main driving factor in energy release, except for the beams with low heights. Analyses allow the determination of beam characteristics based on seismic data. The analysis is refined using swelling factor to compare various beam drop heights. The models show an increase in seismic magnitude for higher drop heights. However, the actual data provided by the Buchanan mine displays a decrease in seismic magnitude with increasing drop height, indicating that energy is dissipated into the broken gob material as drop height increases.

With the extension of mining beneath residential and industrial areas, it is becoming increasingly necessary to extract coal and minerals in such a way that subsidence damage due to groundmovement is reduced to a minimum. Understanding clearly of the mechanism of subsidence development is a must in view of the environmental problems and the energy crisis today. This paper gives a simple analysis of various components resulting from subsidence and the influence of other factors on their development. An up-to-date review of the subsidence and strain profiles is presented, with particular references to the coal mining operations. The importance of this topic from mining damage to structures, buildings properties and environment in mining areas is undeniable. Field results are discussed.

A basic model has been developed to help assess methane control needs for longwall mining of coal in gassy areas. Rather than depending upon reservoir and rock mechanic theory, it uses an empirically-determined gas emission rate as an input and operates on the assumption that, within a specific region and zone, gas emissions will be relatively equivalent for uniform incremental volumes of gob created by mining. The computer program divides longwall panels into segments, keeps track of the face advance, and generates emission rates and volumes for both the entire panel and for individual zones within the panel by summing values for all undermined segments. This model can aid the determination of the number, size, and location of vertical wells or other methane control applications that are needed for gob gas control.

This paper presents a preliminary phase of a study being conducted by the Department of Geochemistry of the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables in the vicinity of the Pachuca-Real del Monte Mining District. This district is located in central Mexico, about 100 km northeast of Mexico City. It has been in operation for the past 450 years and has produced about 38 million kg of silver and about 190 thousand kg of gold. At the present it is being worked by the state owned mining company of Real del Monte and Pachuca. The rocks of the area consist mainly of Tertiary volcanics, ranging in age from early Oligocene to late Pliocene. Ore bodies are recognized as epithermal, vein type fracture fillings. The main ore minerals are argentite and acanthite normally accompanied by base metal sulphides, Gold is present in small amounts as native gold and in other minerals. Orientation geochemical studies performed on soil and rocks over known veins in the district, showed zinc to be the best indicator. Lead and silver anomalies are restricted to the immediate vicinity of the veins, mercury shows the mineralized structures only when the "C" horizon is sampled, while antimony gave erratic values. The El Chico area is about 10 km north of the Pachuca-Real del Monte district and covers approximately 400 sq km. Geological evidence indicated the possibility of an extension of the Pachuca ore bodies in this area. Results obtained from soil and rock samples from El Chico, showed several anomalous area. Detailed investigations proved these anomalies to be related to faults and fractures which in several cases have been found to be mineralized. Drilling is planned with preliminary results expected by late 1974.

The history and development of the FMC Coke process has been reported in numerous presentations over the past 10 years (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6) but a short review is desirable, especially regarding the aspects that are influenced by the coal to be used. F'MC has been developing this process in pilot facilities since 1956 and in a modest sized plant in Kemmerer, Wyoming since 1960 (Figure I). This plant produces strong uniformly sized coke briquettes from a completely non-coking coal, namely Elkol, a sub-bituminous coal of the Adaville seam. Since operating commercially, over 300,000 tons have been produced, 90% of which has been used in electric phosphorus furnaces and some 10% of which went for trials in iron blast furnaces. We believe that this commercial use of non-coking coals is a unique experience in the history of coke manufacture.
