Bayan Obo ore contains mainly bastnaesite, monazite and associated iron, fluorite, calcite, dolomite, barite, and trace amount of columbite. Due to its complex mineral compositions and similar mineral properties, it is difficult to separate and obtain rare earth and fluorite concentrates with high purity by conventional magnetic separation and flotation. In this paper, a stepwise magnetic separation process comprised of wet permanent magnetic separation (PMS), wet electromagnetic separation (EMS), and superconducting magnetic separation (SCMS) was proposed to pre-concentrate iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals from Bayan Obo ore. The results showed that iron, rare earth, and fluorite preconcentrates with high purity and low impurity content could be achieved, which might be helpful to shorten the technological process and improve the separation efficiency for the subsequent flotation of iron, rare earth, and fluorite minerals.

1, Introduction Location Kalengwa mine is located in the North Western Province of Zambia, 402 kilometre by unpaved road to the west of Kitwe, which is roughly in the centre of the Zambian Copperbelt, well known as one of the world's centres of copper mining. Its position is illustrated on the map of Africa in Figure 1 and on the map of Zambia in Figure 2. It is a mine of Roan Consolidated Mines Limited whose other properties, Mufulira, Luanshya, Chambishi and Chibuluma Mines, are all located on the Copperbelt. It is managed by the Chibuluma Division of the company. The rate of production from Kalengwa will vary from 12 000 to 17 000 tonnes of saleable copper a year over the next six years. Kalengwa did not exist as a place until the first prospecting parties and later the mine became established and the early working population was recruited entirely from small villages in the surrounding area as much as thirty miles away. The mining area consists of fourteen mining locations amounting to 3.35 square kilometres and the land may be used for any purpose connected with mining, including housing, wood cutting and other utilities. The whole area is, except for minor undulations, a fairly flat plateau with main rivers running from north to south and flood basins known as "dambos" located in a general east west direction. Vegetation is, with the exception of the grassy dambos, temperate forest with relatively light undergrowth. Game of great variety is prolific, as is the associated tsetse fly.

The disposal of the phosphate slimes produced by Florida beneficiation operations is perhaps the biggest single problem of the phosphate mining industry. This is an old problem which has not been solved and which is becoming increasingly severe. In a typical phosphate mining operation, the phosphate rock mined is initmately mixed with sand and clay, constituting what is known as matrix. During the beneficiation, the clay and other fine materials are separated usually at -150 mesh, and washed from the phosphate rock in a form of diluted slurry known as phosphate slimes. The quantity of slimes solids and their composition vary considerably with the location but usually represent from 25 to 35% of the ore mined. Because of the affinity that clays have for water, large volumes of water are required to separate the granular material in the matrix forming a dilute slime suspension (1.5 to 3% solids) of colloidal material, which settles very slowly, and thus requires immense impounding areas, which never becomes totally usable land. By its nature, underground metal mining is unlike any other business in the industrial sector. Operations are continuously exposed to economic risk as a normal consequence of mining due to uncertainties associated with the? deposit, excavation, and ever changing political, regulatory, and market conditions. Out pacing advances in productivity and technology, these conditions have contributed to the steady decline of underground hardrock mining in the United States. This paper investigates the trends and major factors believed to be responsible for this decline. Special consideration is given to changes in direct operating costs, labor productivity, and production capacity.

The costs of an open-pit operation can be classified according to the following hierarchy : -overall cost of production (per ton of ore) -costs of basic operations and functions -costs of auxiliary operations -costs of machines and equipment -maintenance costs. Production cost is a measure of the open-pit mine performance and should be the final target of the management control. It is also a measure of the share of the mine in the processing stages.

A series of batch flotation tests was performed on chalcopyrite-quartzite, pyrrhotite-quartzite, and on chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-quartzite mixtures. Pulp potential measurements in the flotation tests of single sulfide minerals indicated that each sulfide mineral had its own optimum potential range for flotation. When these results were used to select the potential ranges for the separation of the two minerals from their mixture, their flotation responses changed and the selectivity of separation was adversely affected. A possible mechanism involving surface alteration through galvanic interaction is discussed. A method to improve the selectivity of flotation separation was proposed.

An on-line rheometer, suitable for use with slurries, has been developed at Michigan Technological University. This rheometer can be used with both Newtonian and non-Newtonian slurries, and produces complete shear-rate/shear stress curves which characterize the time-independent rheology of the slurry. The sensor utilizes the Hagen-Poiseuille equation and Boyle's Law to calculate the shear rate, slurry flowrate, and shear stress from a series of pressure measurements. The design of the unit allows the measurement sample to be continuously collected from operating process streams in the often-hostile on-line environment. The shear rate/shear stress curves can be used to conveniently calculate the apparent viscosity at any given shear rate, and also to measure any yield stress or other deviations from Newtonian behavior.

The effect of pulping reagents on the flotation de-inking of laser printed wastepaper was investigated with regard to the removal efficiency of toner and mineral filler particles for different pH values. These results show that caustic pulping causes the toner to be released from the fibers at larger particles sizes. On the other hand, acid pulping not only causes the toner to be released at smaller particles sizes but also increases the concurrent flotation removal of mineral filler particles. It was experimentally observed that the froth generation and stability during flotation were improved for acidic pH values.

At LKAB's plants in Lappland, Sweden, sintered pellets are manu-factured according to three different industrial processes, viz. shaft furnace at Malmberget, straight-grate at Kiruna and grate-kiln at Svappavaara. At present the total annual capacity amounts to 4.7 million tons. However, since it has been decided to erect a new straight-grate plant (2.5 million tons) at Malmberget, and because of the decision to extend and rebuild the existing plants, it is estimated that the annual capacity will be increased to somewhat over 8 million tons by 1973. The great majority of the pellets produced is exported. They are thus reloaded several times and generally speaking roughly handled, resulting in larger or smaller product losses on arrival at the point of use. It is there-fore of great economical interest to have a good control over the transport strength of the pellets by appropriate quality testing at the point of production. In addition to good transport strength, further demands are ob-viously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The blast furnace burden must maintain a good permeability for the gas. The pellets must thus have a favourable size distribution and must not be so weakened by reduction that they disintegrate under the stresses and clog the blast furnace shaft. Furthermore, the burden must have good reducibility. An increase of the rate of reduction can obviously mean increased blast furnace capacity and reduced coke consumption. In order to optimise the properties of the pellets in these respects, the producer must also be thoroughly familiar with their behaviour during reduction, particularly as the customer's interest in the reduction properties of the pellets' has increased over the last few years. Up to now the only quality demands the customer has made have generally had to do with the cold strength and the screen analysis. Thus a quality control of in addition to good transport strength, further demands are obviously made on pellets destined for blast furnace operation. The gold-silver deposits of the northern Primorye region are located in the eastern part of the East Sikhote-Alin volcanic belt, where the belt overlaps the Kema island-arc terrain of the Aptian-Albian age. There have been four deposits and numerous mineralization points found in the NE-trending Kema metallogenic belt that is about 1000 km long and 100 km wide. The known mineralization is of epithermal type, controlled by faults, and concentrated in quartz, quartz-fluorite-adularia, and, less commonly, sulfide-quartz vein systems hosted by the Upper Cretaceous-Lower Tertiary volcanic rocks. The vein systems extend for hundreds meters along strike, varying from tens centimeters to 50-60 meters in width. They are surrounded by wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration containing some gold-silver mineralization for which the commercial value was not studied during the early exploration. The ore bodies contain from 1 to 50-80 ppm of Au and from 1 to 1000 ppm of Ag. Gold is native, associated with quartz, and represented by particles from tens of microns to 1 mm in size. Silver occurs in native form as a constituent of argentite, pyrargyrite, stephanite, and other sulfosalts. The test work carried out for three vein systems 20 years ago showed that gold might be easily and almost completely recovered from the ore by cyanide treatment. The paper describes the geology and mineralogy of the deposits, Salut and Primorskoye, that are the most studied properties of the Kema belt. It also presents the data available on disseminated gold-silver mineralization in stockworks, altered explosive breccias, and wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration. This mineralization should be explored for possible exploitation as large open-pit, heap-leach deposits.

The continuous personal dust monitor (CPDM) is an essential instrument for working in hazardous environments, is used to monitor real-time coal dust exposure, and is mandated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for underground coal mines. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) found that it is possible for electromagnetic interference (EMI) between a CPDM and a proximity detection system (PDS) to occur. Various approaches have been taken by researchers and manufacturers to address this EMI issue. Administrative controls were recommended to keep the CPDM six inches away from the wearable PDS device. Shielding pouches were made to contain the electromagnetic (EM) emission from the CPDM. Metal shielding was added to major EM emitting components. EMI filtering with large capacitors was introduced to mitigate EMI. Most recently, a novel magnetic-field-cancellation-based approach was developed and achieved remarkable results. In this paper, we provide a comparison between these approaches. The pros and cons of each approach are presented and discussed, so that mining device manufacturers and operators can best evaluate the technology and controls that improve the health and safety of mine workers.

The effects of harmonic resonance between the supply impedance and power factor correction capacitors on systems with large harmonic sources, such as mine winders, are well known. The similar effects of resonance with cable capacitance are not commonly encountered and, hence, are not always considered in the design of medium-voltage networks. This article considers some of the aspects of resonance between the supply impedance and the cable capacitance and presents one successful approach to solving the problem.

Powerful mining systems typically generate high-level noise that can damage the hearing ability of miners. Engineering noise controls are the most desirable and effective control for overexposure to noise. However, the effects of these noise controls on the actual hearing status of workers are not easily measured. A tool that can provide guidance in assigning workers to jobs based on the noise levels to which they will be exposed is highly desirable. Therefore, the Pittsburgh Mining Research Division (PMRD) of the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a tool to estimate in a systematic way the hearing loss due to occupational noise exposure and to evaluate the effectiveness of developed engineering controls. This computer program is based on the ISO 1999 standard and can be used to estimate the loss of hearing ability caused by occupational noise exposures. In this paper, the functionalities of this software are discussed and several case studies related to mining machinery are presented to demonstrate the functionalities of this software.

Neutron activation analysis for mineral identification has attracted the attention of numerous investigators, judging from the publications on this subject in the past few years. 1-9 The appealing aspect of this method of mineral analysis is its proven sensitivity in the laboratory. In principle, activation analysis is one of the few petro-physical methods whereby a direct analysis for a mineral itself is possible in a borehole. The successful application of activation analysis requires the use of particular neutron reactions, measurement of selected gamma-ray energy intervals, and optimum bombardment and detection times. For copper analysis, Labanov et al., 10,11 using a low-energy PuBe source, reported an acceptable logging means. On the other hand, Pradzynski12, in analyzing ores and process tailings, used high-energy neutrons and photons for surface measurements of process samples. The work of Labanov et al. was based on measuring the rate of decay of the activated copper and hence was not as definitive as might be desired. Equipment is commercially available to carry out activation studies in the field 13,14 Gamma-ray spectra can be successfully transmitted over ordinary logging cables and, with borehole high-energy neutron accelerators and lower-energy chemical neutron sources, a variety of neutron activation methods can be studied. The purpose of the study discussed in this paper was to determine the feasibility and practicability of logging for copper using neutron activation techniques and commercially available equipment. The laboratory study showed that Cu could be detected in rock samples in the laboratory by high-energy neutron activation of 63 Cu. In the field, however, due in part to the large volume irradiated, the direct detection of copper using high-energy neutrons was not as promising. Colorado nahcolite deposits, estimated at 29 billion metric tons, formed in an asp metric permanent-lake basin whose waters were rich in algae and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Nahcolite (NaHCOg) occurs in oil shale of the Green River Formation (Eocene) as aggregates (62 percent), disseminated crystals (24 percent), and impure beds (14 percent). Because much of the nahcolite is nonbedded, it will be mined with oil shale and can be concentrated to marketable grade by crushing and screening Impurities in nahcolite are kerogen, quartz, pyrite, and carbonate minerals. A promising new market for nahcolite is in the process of removal of sulfur dioxide from industrial stack gases. When heated, nahcolite reacts with sulfur dioxide to form sodium sulfate. Differences in thermally induced microporosity may explain why nahcolite is more reactive than trona, a possible competitor with nahcolite for SO2 removal. Limited production of nahcolite at one or possibly two localities is expected in the next several years, but large-scale production is probably at least 10 years away.

Oxide particles are commonly used as fillers in plastics, paper, rubber etc. (particulate composites). The successful fabrication of such composites is dependent upon the adhesive strength of the filler particles to the matrix. The compatibility of the matrix and the filler particles is generally enhanced by adsorption of surface modifiers such as surfactants and polymers at the particle-matrix interface. In order to develop a scientific basis for selection of appropriate modifiers it is necessary to understand their adsorption mechanism(s). Specifically, adsorption of polymeric additives is attributed to a combination of chemical and electrostatic interactions, hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. Hydrogen bonding has been suggested to be the primary adsorption mechanism for non-ionic polymers. However, a literature survey of Poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO)-oxide system suggested PEO, a non-ionic polymer, to be substrate specific. A systematic study was undertaken to investigate the adsorption mechanism(s) of a PEO on oxide particles. It was determined that strong Bronsted acid sites on the surface interact with the ether oxygen, a Lewis base, of PEO to induce adsorption. In this work characterization of PEO binding sites on oxides is reported and the mechanism(s) of PEO adsorption discussed.

The dissolution behavior of silver and copper form their elemental states and Ag/Cu alloys in ammoniacal solutions has been studied using rotating disc electrodes. The variables studied included concentration of ammonia, oxygen partial pressure and rotating speed of the disc. The results have been interpreted in terms of the mixed potential theory. The effect of local current resistance on the overall current has also been examined as a part of the governing theory of the dissolution. It was observed that the dissolution potential and the rate of dissolution were very much affected by the composition of the alloys.

"Duluth & Iron Range Railroad. The Duluth & Iron Range Railroad was built from Two Harbors to the Vermilion range at Tower, a distance of 67.6 miles, in 1884, and extended to Ely, twenty-one miles east of Tower, in 1888. It was built into Duluth in 1886, and branches were extended from its main line to the Mesabi mines in 1892 and 1893. The original grades on this road are very steep, going north, and in the thirteen miles from Two Harbors to Highland there is a rise of 1,150 feet. A new line between these points has been built with an increase of three miles in distance and with maximum grades of 1 per cent. Duluth, Missabe & Northern Railway. The Duluth, Mis¬sabe & Northern Railway was constructed from Stony Brook to Mountain Iron, a distance of 48.62 miles, in 1892. The Biwabik branch from Iron Junction to Biwabik, a distance of 15.54 miles, was constructed in 1892. The Superior branch from Wolf to Hibbing, a distance of 16.06 miles, was co11structed in 1893. The Alborn branch from Coleraine Junction to Coleraine, a distance of 53 miles, was constructed in 1906. The total main line mileage is 242 miles, of which 82 miles from Duluth to Hibbing is double tracked"

A conventional paddle-type mixer and a gravity flow mixing device were evaluated for conditioning of phosphate ore with fatty acid and fuel oil, and for acid scrubbing prior to cationic flotation. Gravity flow mixing required less residence-time, but slightly higher reagent concentrations to achieve recovery levels similar to conventional conditioning. Grade was less sensitive to reagent concentration using the gravity flow mixer. For acid scrubbing, the gravity flow mixer proved equally effective. In this paper, the effect of time, pulp density, reagent concentration, and emulsification on conditioning and acid scrubbing efficiency of the two devices will be discussed.

Mining has always been among the most hazardous of occupations, and with the increasing demand for coal and minerals, safety in mines assumes even greater importance. Worldwide, underground miners are being exposed to noise and respirable dust hazards associated with roof bolt drilling. These hazards are now being understood to cause irreparable damage to the health of miners. The objective of this research was to discover if a polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) drill bit generates less respirable dust and hazardous noise than a competing tungsten carbide (WC) bit in dry vacuum drilling. In order to control the drill parameters the drilling tests were conducted in a laboratory setting. The results were obtained by determining the quantities of dust and noise generated using each drill bit and analyzing those levels, using monitoring devices and software to collect the data. This paper includes information on the experimental setup, equipment used, drilling parameters, and data collected. Our results indicate that PDC bits produce significantly less noise and dust than WC bits. Our findings can contribute to improving the working conditions of rock bolter operators by reducing noise and dust generation.
