In 1991, most industrialized countries, except for Germany, were in a recession or a period of reduced growth. The US economy, already in recession, suffered from mounting banking system losses and the uncertainty brought about by the Persian Gulf War. However, US and worldwide minerals exploration did not collapse as it did during the mid-1980s. Even though gold and base metal prices declined, prices were still above cash costs for most operations. This allowed the continuation of established exploration programs but sharply limited new initiatives. Exploration 1990-1991 Planned worldwide 1991 exploration expenditures declined by about 8% from 1990 levels, according to a survey of 153 companies by the Metals Economic Group (MEG). Canada was the leading exploration target with 23% of the total, followed by Australia and the US (19% each), South Africa (13%), Latin America (11%) and the South Pacific (7%). The remaining 8% was split evenly between Europe and the rest of Africa. In Latin America, Mexico and Chile are the most attractive countries for exploration. Recognizing the risks involved, the industry has been cautious about ventures in the former Soviet Union. Survey results also showed that while the majors expected to maintain exploration spending, smaller firms were cutting back or actively seeking farm-outs from the majors (personal communication, M. Wegener, MEG).

Classification of Mills Mills may be classified under four categories that relate to the type of action utilized to grind the material: Tumbling. The most important of these to the minerals processing industry are tumbling mills. Grinding media is actuated in a free¬form pattern in a rotating drum causing it to tumble, material being ground passing through the tumbling media. Work is done by a combi¬nation of attrition and impact. Impact. Grinding media is actuated in a distinctive pattern so that it impacts the material being ground. Work is done by impact. Roller. Grinding media is actuated in a distinctive pattern, mate¬rial being ground passing under or between the media. Work is done by compression. Fluid Energy. There is no grinding media as such. Energy is imparted to the material by transfer of kinetic energy from the fluid to the material. Grinding is accomplished by interparticle impact and attrition. Tumbling Mitts The main physical arrangement consists of a lined cylindrical drum mounted on trunnion bearings driven by a ring gear and pinion, in turn connected directly or through a reducer to the electric motor. Variations to this general arrangement include: (1) Drum mounted on rollers instead of trunnions. (2) Bearings on the drum directly, not on trunnions. (3) Utilization of multiple pinions on the gear. (4) Trunnion-type drive arrangement through a gear reducer with¬out the use of a ring gear. (5) Motor rotor mounted directly on the drum with stator around the drum, thus eliminating the gearing. The drum consists of a shell and heads lined with replaceable liners of various types and configurations. Various types of tumbling mills are tabulated; illustrations of some are shown. The types are so designed for specific purposes. Media utilized include steel rods, balls, or rock of the same material as being ground or of special material in the instance where iron contami¬nation is detrimental (see Figs. 9 and 10 and Table 2). Impact Mills Although there may be some overlapping of interpretation of terms, impact mills are considered those in which the media is actuated in a distinctive manner, at relatively high speed, impacting the material to be ground. There is an overlapping also in what may be considered to be crushing equipment rather than grinding equipment. Hammer Mill or Impactor. Material is fed into the equipment; inside hammers of impactors revolve at a high speed, breaking the material on impact with the hammers (see Fig. 11). The McKinley Mine is a large strip operation sup-plying coal to several utility and industrial customers. The mine reserve comprises many coal seams of varying quality and thickness. Erosion of the terrain has created coal out-crop lines that are encountered frequently with associated deviations in quality. Due to the complex nature of the coal reserve and the various customer quality requirements, coal quality control is a primary consideration and a constant challenge at the McKinley Mine. This paper will discuss the practices employed to ensure that the available coal meets contract specifications.

INTRODUCTION Today, flotation is clearly the dominant mineral concentration method. Since it is a relatively selective process, it is used for almost all sulfide minerals. A recent U. S. Bureau of Mines study indicated that approximately 225 million metric tons of sulfide ore was processed in 67 plants in the United States in 1980 (USBM Staff, 1981). There were over 100 plants processing copper ores in the world (Bassarear, 1985). Sulfide ores containing lead, zinc, copper, molybdenum, precious metals, cobalt, nickel, and iron are generally separated and concentrated by flotation. This chapter briefly reviews the plant practice related to the recovery of the above-mentioned sulfide minerals with emphasis on chemical reagents used for the production of marketable-grade products. PROCESSING OF SULFIDE ORES It is beyond the scope of this chapter to review the milling data for operating plants which have been extensively covered in literature (Tveter and McQuiston, 1962; Rausch and Mariacher, 1970; Weiss, 1985; Crozier, 1979). However, the following generalizations can be made regarding the processing of sulfide ores: 1. The primary grind is targeted to produce as coarse a product as necessary to provide an economic degree of liberation. 2. The concentration process, generally flotation, is designed to produce a concentrate consisting predominantly of valuable minerals and a middling fraction which may require further grinding to produce an optimum release of minerals. 3. The chemical reagent suite (collectors, frothers, etc.) for the separation of sulfide minerals from gangue minerals is generally complex. Total reagents used in the flotation process can be as high as six to eight, as is the case for lead and molybdenite separation from complex sulfide ores. 4. Chemical reagents are generally expensive because of the high selectivity for sulfide minerals. The process flowsheet is dependent on several factors, including ore grade and mineralogical composition. Generic process flowsheets for processing different sulfide ores have been developed for discussion in this chapter. However, there appears to be a consistent relationship between the reagent combination choice and the mineralogical composition of the ore (Tveter and McQuiston, 1962). These are covered in detail in the following sections. LEAD AND ZINC Galena (PbS) and sphalerite (ZnS), which commonly occur together, are the only minerals of lead and zinc, respectively, in most primary deposits. Feed ore grades are typically 1 to 5 percent Pb and 1 to 10 percent Zn. Very often economic quantities of copper and precious metals, silver and gold, also occur with these base metals.

Is the Brazilian gold rush over? Judging from the situation in Brazil over the past few decades, the answer is almost certainly yes. The picture of swarms of Brazilian prospectors or "Garimpeiros" crowding or, more correctly, overcrowding the gold regions of the Amazon jungle using the time-aged empirical approach to gold exploration has finally run its course. There are two fallacies that have lead to a reduction in the discovery of new gold fields in Brazil. The first fallacy is that "Brazil's geology is largely unknown." The extreme depth of weathering and the general lack of understanding of the shield deposits are at the origin of this misconception. The second fallacy is that "Brazilian prospectors ("garimpeiros") are very naive, have very little technical knowledge and can only produce gold at very low recovery rates." This is more of a result of wishful thinking for the purpose of justifying limiting exploration programs than it is a real consideration. In this paper, the author takes a methodical heuristic approach to gold exploration in Brazil and offers this as an alternative to the empirical approach of the garimpeiros.

The indium recovery via electrowinning from sulfate baths has recently gained significant attention as it does not present toxic emissions, hermetically sealed system requirements, human health, and environmental hazards. Following previous works related to the optimization process for AISI 316L and Ni cathode, it was observed significant importance of the metal supports on the input and output parameters of the indium electrowinning process from sulfate solutions. Thus, comparing input and output parameters in both cases seems very interesting. Particularly, regarding the input parameters, the attention has been focused on the electrolyte composition, current density, and temperature, while productivity, morphology, and structure have been considered regarding the output parameters. Considering the productivity as the optimal output, the findings for Ni cathode were better than that for AISI 316L in most of the selected conditions studied. In the case of morphology, indium grains appear rounded and dendritic on the AISI 316L, while those on the Ni cathode show stratified lamellar grains. Anyway, the indium deposit obtained on Ni cathode shows bigger grains independently from the used operative conditions with respect to that on AISI 316L. Regarding the structure, it is clearly tetragonal, but preferential orientation, crystallinity, and deformation of the structure strongly depend on the metal support.

INTRODUCTION Under certain geological and mining conditions mining near the surface results in an intensive destruction of the overlying rock strata. If the system of mine openings remains filled with air after having completed all mining activities because the flooding of the mines depending on the morphology of the mining area does not exceed a certain level, this circumstance might result in dangers for the public. This is particularly true where uncontrollable air- ways occur within the destroyed rock or if former uranium mining areas are concerned. In these areas radon emanation resulting in undue radon concentration should be taken into account. This circumstance can be counteracted by suitable measures of ventilation. In the following the example of a uranium deposit in the Erzgebirge Mountains (Saxon Ore Mountains) is used to illustrate how statements about the ground flow through overlying rock can be made on the basis of systematic investigations. Finally comparisons with experience gained in coal mining yield orientation data which are used as input quantities in ventilation network calculations and in project preparation of mine fans. Last not least it is proved that endangering the population by radon can be excluded by installing an appropriate fan. INITIAL SITUATION From 1946 to 1989 the uranium deposit of Schlemal-Alberode was mined starting from superficial zones down to depths of 1,800 m. The total output amounted to 80,000 t of uranium, i.e. Schlemal Alberode is one of the largest uranium deposits in the world. The mine openings comprise a cavity of 40 million m3. Al- though thin seams (0.2 to 0.3 m) and steep to semi-steep veins (60 - 70 degrees on average) were extracted using the method of overhand cut-and-fill there were also deposit sections with larger thicknesses and poor ore zones, respectively, where especially after the war until about 1955 large openings were formed due to missing filling. Due to this uncontrolled, relatively "wild" mining considerable subsidence of the surface and fractures in the border zone of the subsidence area occurred. The town of Oberschlema was destroyed and an area of 0.14 km2 was damaged by mining involving a maximum subsidence of 6 m in the centre - called deformation area. The rehabilitation work for the deposit area of Schlemal Alberode involves the flooding of the openings up to a level of the Markus-Semmler-Sohle as long-term preventive measure. Fig. 1 shows the flooding level of October 1996. The level of the -540 m drift will probably be reached in June 1997. From that point of time a general rearrangement of the ventilation has to be made because the central return air ventilation via shaft 373 will no longer be possible. This shaft has no connection with the superficia1 system of mine openings. A new return air ventilation system based on shaft 382 as return air shaft will be designed (Fig. 1). The capacity of the future mine fan system will e.g. be determined by the flow conditions in the deformation area mentioned above. For this reason investigations were carried out in a test drift 13a on the level of the Markus-Semmler-Sohle in the stretching zone of the subsidence trough for several days (Fig. 2 and 3). INFLUENCE OF THE OPERATING CONDITIONS OF THE MAIN MINE FAN ON THE RADIATION SITUATION ON SURFACE The beginning of flooding in 1991 was also the beginning of the investigations into the options of future ventilation due to the reduction of the mining area. The first analyses of radon emanation made in May 1991 showed that only about 20 % of the total radon emanation result from systematically ventilated mine workings. This means that despite of existing dams the air streams through the majority of mine openings of the deposit. The analysis of the individual radon inflows illustrates the special problematic nature of the deposit involving all possible effects on the surface. The shutdown of the main mine fan over the long period between 2.10. and 6.10.1991 showed the essential influence of the operating conditions of the fans on the whole radiation situation on surface. Fig. 4 shows the comparison of the radon concentration level and its daughters during a 'normal" weekend with the level during long-term shutdown in the old 'Casino" of the papermill of Niederschlema. This papermill as well as the 'Casino" are situated in the outcropping zone of the deposit section of Niederschlema. The -60 m level was driven as the upper level in this area, from which the panels were driven to about 20 m below the surface. Also below the "Casino" there is such a panel in the vein 'Glirck", whose roof is directly situated below the building in a depth of 39 m. Directly next to it there is the raise 2 of the panel 'Namenlos" in a depth of 27 m. The graphics clearly shows the immediate increase in radon concentration as well as in the daughter concentration after the shutdown of the fans. The elimination of the artificially generated negative pressure results in the reversal of the convection direction due to the natural ventilating pressure. The interface structure allows the mine airto pass through aero- dynamic connections to the surface. Neglecting the meteorological parameters the concentrations of radon and its daughters in- creased by about 350 % as compared to a 'normal" weekend during longterm shutdown (i.e. in 4 days). A flotation process has been developed to successfully treat ore from the Santo Domingo phosphate deposit in Baja California Sur. The ore contained less than 4% P2O5 with quartz, silicates, and carbonates as gangue minerals. Flotation of the low- grade feed in seawater required that the conventional Crago process, comprising direct anionic flotation, deoiling, and inverse cationic flotation, be augmented by an anionic cleaner flotation step, phosphate depression, and a calcite flotation step.

As part of the 3RPORT Project, a 5-mile tunnel is being excavated underneath the three rivers of Fort Wayne using a 19-foot diameter Slurry Tunnel Boring Machine. The groundwater pressure at the tunnel axis ranges from 4.5 to 5.3 bar. The rock mass hydraulic conductivity is very high with water inflows up to 10,000gpm imposing significant challenges to the project. After excavating 1,550-feet of the TBM tunnel, major leaks between the tailskin and the segmental lining were observed, indicating the potential deterioration of the tailskin brushes and the need for inspection and eventual replacement. The first part of the paper describes the planning of the intervention, including the design of the polyurethane grouting campaign, the procedures developed for the execution and the controls established during construction to timely assess the presence of potential hazards. The second part of the paper focuses on the experience gained during execution and lesson learned to prevent future occurrences of this nature.

An experimental procedure was developed for studying magnetic roasting on a accurately-controlled laboratory scale. The loss-in-weight method was used and the course of reduction could be followed under a reducing gas atmosphere containing as many as five different components. Some important variables of the operation were checked on a marginal Mesabi iron ore containing porous and dense varieties of hematite as well as pure goethite. The conditions simulated were those for the grate roasting of a coarsely-sized ore burden. Temperature was maintained at 600°C; gas composition at 4.25% CO, 4.25% H2, 17.0% CO2, 15.0% H20, and 59.5% N2,, and gas flow rate at about 1,5 lineal feet per minute. The ore charge was composed of quarter-inch cubes. Under these conditions, the ore porosity was found to be one of the governing variables of the operation. Results showed that an ore size limitation existed as a function of this ore porosity. For efficient magnetic conversion, the size limit was 3/8 inch for very porous ores and about 65 mesh for very dense ores. An anomaly was noted in the weight losses incurred during actual magnetic conversion. For goethitic ores, these were generally about 13 per cent higher than could be accounted for theoretically. The effect was attributed to possible non-stoichiometric structures forming during the reduction process.

This paper describes an integrated procedure for the very short term production planning of an open pit and the execution of this plan: the truck dispatching. Integration of plan and dispatch means that the plan is realistic so that its objectives can be realized by the dispatch. This realism is obtained by supplying the plan optimization, which involves mixed integer programming, linear programming and non-linear programming, with experimental O.R. models of waiting and blending. The arrangement of these models in the computer programm has made it possible to obtain very short computing time for the planning in spite of the width of the optimisation. The dispatching of a truck is made by solving a classical assignment problem for each dispatch over a horizon of the expected*next 10-15 trucks to request dispatches. This deep-reaching dispatch procedure uses the continuously arriving information about trucks' positions and shovels situations and models by probability functions the expected waiting time of shovels and trucks. In this manner trucks and shovels are synchronized and last moments' opportunities for productivity gains can be obtained. The dispatch procedure takes .5 second on PDP11. This integrated planning and dispatch procedure gives high productivity while ensuring good blending. Results from the Mount Wright mine of the Quebec-Cartier Mining Co., where the integrated procedure has been installed on the existing computer equipment PDP11, are included.

Long before the dawn of recorded history, man began to dig into the earth's crust in a never ending search for useful materials. It has been well established that prehistoric man discovered flint. "The Flintstones" were aptly named. The flintknappers of southern England and Wales still exist today in ever dwindling numbers as they seek out chunks of flint. It is a well known fact that more than half of the earth's crust is composed of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known as silica. Silica and silica containing materials have a great many uses in modern society. However, this material is potentially extremely hazardous to our health. Centuries before the Christian Era, Hippocrates wrote of a lung disease common to those who mined in hard rock. It is obvious to us that he was describing silicosis. It is also apparent from ancient writings, that the Egyptians were aware of this malady. Dioscorides also wrote on this subject in the fifth century, B.C. It is undoubtedly the oldest and best studied of the occupational lung diseases. It was certainly described by Agricola in his "De Re Metallica" published in 1556, in which he described lung disease among hard rock miners. This publication, I'm sure, is of special interest and perhaps known to many of you in the mining community. The original document was written in Latin and was translated in 1912 by two gentlemen, Hoover and Hoover. One of these translators was Herbert L. Hoover, a former president of the United States, who made his living before his presidency as a mining engineer.

A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the potential for recovering anthracite from coal preparation-plant tailings. The study included washability analyses, cyclone simulations and froth flotation testing Samples were collected from either the tailings streams or the slurry ponds of five anthracite-cleaning plants. From each sample, a washability analysis was conducted on the 28x100 and 100x200-mesh fractions. Using the above data, along with published partition data, simulations were performed with various cyclone-staging arrangements for both water-only and dense-medium cyclones treating the 28x200-mesh fractions. Separate froth -flotation tests were conducted on the 28x100- and 100x200-mesh fractions from three of the plant samples. The washability, simulation and flotation results are presented as grade-yield curves.

The Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research and the Eastern Coal Council are leading education efforts for the project, as well as specific outreach efforts in Central Appalachia in order to develop a process for stakeholder education and engagement in sustainable energy.

Health and safety issues are very important to the mining industry. Although the application of scientific research and current technology shields workers from many dangerous aspects of mining, accidents do happen. Many companies and institutions worldwide have committed to a continuous effort to minimize such occurrences. In this study, the health and safety data pertaining to the Greek mining and quarrying industry for the last three decades are presented and critically evaluated with respect to factors such as the number of workers and annual production. Appropriate indices are also calculated regarding the incidence and frequency of accidents. Health and safety issues specific to mining in Greece are also discussed.

Energy costs have had a serious impact on all basic industries today. This is due to the significant amount of energy that is used to convert natural resources into usable products. Other factors such as transportation with its major energy requirement and materials employed in processing that have already required significant energy input for their manufacture accordingly influence delivered cost to the user. The farmer is a good example of this. While his large capital investment for land, machines, and buildings is highly impacted by today's interest rates, his chemical fertilizer, herbicides, and pesticides as well as those same machines and transportation costs for his products have also been seriously affected by energy costs. With the many unit operations involved in mining and mineral processing, several of which require significant inputs of energy, one can only conclude that this industry has experienced a great increase in percentage of total cost for energy alone. Fuerstenau (1975) indicated that the minerals industry used about 12.5% of the total energy produced in the US. McNulty (1983) listed the total energy requirements for the production of 0.9 t (1 st) of various metals including the energy consumed in the manufacture of supplies employed, such as tires, explosives, chemicals, grinding media, etc. (Table 1).

Introduction Since the beginning of operations at the pellet plant at Ponta Ubu ES, Samarco Mineração SA has produced pellets for direct reduction and blast furnace processes. Of the total amount of pellets produced from 1977 through 1993, 55 % are used in the blast furnace, about 45 Mt (49.6 million st). The principal components of pellet gangue are calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, silica and alumina. They should be added in adequate quantities to guarantee the mechanical resistance of the fired pellets under blast furnace conditions. Over the years, the pellets produced by Samarco had a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8% and varying binary basicity preferably between 0.8 and 0.85. On the other hand, the increasing amount of industrial waste in siderurgical plants caused by the increase of steel production has caused some countries to put into practice methods to reduce the volume of slag produced in the blast furnace. This paper's goal is to find an alternative for decreasing the amount of slag produced in the blast furnace. It is possible to decrease pellet gangue by decreasing the silica content to about 2%, leaving the metallurgical properties and quality of pellets unaltered. For this work, Samarco pellets were used with Si02 between 2.5% and 2.8%, pellets with high silica and pellets with Si02 between 2.0% and 2.3% low silica. Both were partially fluxed by the range of varying basicity CaO/SiO2 from 0.8 to 0.95 during production. Experimental tests on pilot scale Thhis work began in January 1986 in the pilot plant (pot grate, Fig. 1) at Samarco. Its goal was to obtain preliminary data that would indicate the bybility of the project. It also formed a solid base to extend the studies in tests on an industrial scale of production for blast-furnace pellets. The pot grate is a test furnace composed of a gas burner, a combustion chamber and a grate, connected by hot air ducts. The burner is fed by a mixture of LPG and air. It reaches high temperatures through oxygen injection. The combustion chamber heats the air that comes from the turbocompressor. This hot air flows through the ducts to the grate on which the pellet samples are fired. During updraft drying, downdraft drying, preheating, firing and afterfiring, the upward and downward direction of the air flow can be controlled by valves driven by pneumatic cylinders. The pot grate indurator was fully automated in August 1989. Positive and negative pressures measurements resulting from gas passing through the pellet layer, as well as temperature readings, are recorded in graphs in relation to time for all tests. The tests depend on the various steps carried out in sequence that can influence the results of the tests. Therefore, some criteria were adopted to restrict the number of variables in the process. This was done to facilitate the results of the analysis. The pellets were composed of concentrate, bentonite, hydrated calcitic lime and metallurgical coal, all regularly used in the pellet plant. The material balance of the pellets mix was determined from the chemical analysis of the components. Table 1 shows the chemical characteristics of the concentrate and the additives used in the pilot plant and industrial tests. The basicity has a marked influence on the metallurgical properties of the pellets produced by Samarco with a silica content between 2.5% and 2.8%. However, for pellets with low silica (about 2%), it was necessary to study the variation in the parameters of quality in a wide range of basicities to deliniate with precision a scope of work. A large variety of low-silica blast-furnace pellets were produced at the pilot plant with binary basicity varying between 0.8 and 0.95. After chemical analysis, those pellets were separated into five groups of different binary basicity (0.8, 0.84, 0.87, 0.90 and 0.95). Each was then split, one part for metallurgical tests in the laboratory at Samarco and another to be evaluated in a laboratory for metallurgical tests in Germany. Extraction of underground coal or mineral by the caving methods leads to surface deformations and the accurate measurement of this deformation is becoming a demanding task. Thus, the study demonstrates a Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS-InSAR) technique for surface subsidence measurement. The method was applied to measure the subsidence level over three mechanized depillaring panels with caving at GDK-11 Incline mine, India. The study was conducted using C-band data of Sentinel 1A/B sensors, which captured the data in the descending path from October 25, 2017 to March 07, 2020. The deformation level was measured based on the identified PS points in the specified region. In this case, 12 zones were identified (4 for each panel), based on the observation of permanent scatterer (PS) points. The maximum subsidence level and deformation rate range in 12 zones are −43.12 to −65 mm and −73.8 to 100 mm/year, respectively. The deformation level obtained through the PS-InSAR technique showed a good agreement with those of the field measurement. Thus, the PS-InSAR technique can detect and monitor the subsidence level over the goaved-out panel(s) of an underground mine using C-band SAR data of the Sentinal-1A/B sensor.

Secondary minerals, amorphous materials, and biologic entities that form on building stone can cause aesthetically unflattering changes in color and may even result in stone decay. Techniques to determine causes of such changes generally have entailed destructive sampling and often required chemical, thin section, X-ray, or other relatively slow, expensive measurements. We have found that a rapid leach of in-place stone using small volumes (50-100 ml) of very pure distilled, deionized water provides recovery of sufficient dissolved material to help diagnose stone anomalies. Water is sprayed onto the stone and collected in a nonwetting plastic pan. Ion chromatograph analysis of waters thus collected from more than 160 sites showed wide variations in concentration of anions F, Cl, NO3, and SO4. Anion analyses were made in minutes for less than $20 per sample. Cations Ca, Mg, Fe, and Sr also were detected, and analyses might be used to determine mineral sources using equilibrium computer models. Solid particles filtered from the samples can be examined microscopically to provide further information about atmospheric agents affecting the stone. The collected water can even be evaporated to precipitate dissolved minerals. Chloride values in samples rinsed from stone ran as high as up to 17,000 ppm, nitrate to 100 ppm, and sulfate to 1,000 ppm. Limited data also indicate that measurable amounts of fluoride were found in some of the rinse waters. Chlorides were most abundant in areas where the stone has become dimpled or spalled. Nitrates were generally higher near ground level, and sulfate tended to be more abundant in samples taken from higher sites or from sheltered sites. Dark-stained limestone tended to yield less soluble material than clean-looking stone. Leachable elements were higher in samples from urban areas. Most of our data are from limestone buildings, but the technique works on other types of dimension stone, man-made construction materials, and even natural outcrops of rocks. Longitudinal studies show that soluble materials vary through time and are affected by climate. This rapid, in situ leach technique, although still being perfected, shows great promise in the diagnosis of stone alteration and in the evaluation of stone treatments because it is completely nondestructive.

Gypsum is the crystalline chemical compound CaS04?2H20. A close chemical relation - and frequently occurring with Gypsum ? is Anhydrite which is Cask. Gypsun has wide commercial use because relatively simple heat processing reduces it to Plaster of Paris. While Anhydrite can be converted to Gypsum and thence to Plaster of Paris, the procedure is not simple and is quite costly. Anhydrite, however does have use in the agricultural field and in the Portland Cement industry. Occurrence of Gypsum in the earth structure is usually near or at the surface. Most underground mining is at 60 to 100 feet although one mine in southwest Virginia reaches a depth of 1300 feet. Gypsum is one of our softest minerals, rating only 2.0 on the Mohs scale of hardness. Specific gravity is 2.3 to 2.4. It is soluble in water but only slightly so. Interestingly, it is more soluble in cold water than in hot. For example, one part Gypsum dissolves in 370 parts water at 106° Fahrenheit while at 212°F. the water requirement is 452 parts. Compressive strength of massive Gypsum runs about 3000 lbs. per square inch. Color ranges from grey and brownish-grey to white.
