The City of Toronto’s Coxwell Bypass Tunnel is currently being constructed by North Tunnel Constructors ULC, a joint venture of Jay Dee Canada, C&M McNally Tunnel Constructors and Michels Canada. This project includes construction of approximately 10.5 km of 6.3 meter finished diameter rock tunnel, five 20 meter diameter storage shafts and eleven tunnel connection drop shafts, along with associated deaeration and adit tunnels. This paper describes progress on the project to date and reviews the risk mitigation measures utilized on the project to move the project forward through tough geological conditions during shaft excavation and tunneling phase of the project.

INTRODUCTION Construction of Phase I, Section A, of the Baltimore Region Rapid Transit System required that six underground stations be built using a cut and cover excavation technique. For five of these stations, soldier piles, used as support of excavation, were installed with tip elevations well below the bottom of the excavation. However, in the case of the sixth subway station, the Mondawmin Station, soldier piles were installed only through soil and decomposed rock, with the tips of the piles being stopped well above the bottom of the excavation in partially decomposed rock. Below the tips of the soldier piles, and below a cut slope where piles were not installed, the sides of the excavation consisted of partially weathered and fresh rock and were supported by a combination of rock bolts, wire mesh and shotcrete. An extensive installation of geotechnical instrumentation permitted detailed monitoring of horizontal and vertical movements of the soldier piles and the walls of the excavation. Preliminary studies indicated that the excavation support system selected for the Mondawmin Station would have several advantages over a conventional system consisting of soldier piles extending to the bottom of the excavation, braced with prestressed struts. These advantages included lower cost of installation, a decreased time required for installation, and a more open excavation for the contractor during construction of the station. The Mondawmin Station is situated in the northwestern quadrant of Baltimore City, approximately 6.4 km (4 miles) from the center of the City. Mine equipment fires remain as one of the most concerning safety issues in the mining industry, and most equipment fires were caused by hot surface ignitions. Detailed experimental investigations were conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Mining Research Division on hot surface ignition of liquid fuels under ventilation in a mining environment. Three types of metal surface materials (stainless steel, cast iron and carbon steel), three types of liquids (diesel fuel, hydraulic fluid and engine oil) and four air ventilation speeds (0, 0.5, 1.5 and 3 m/s) were used to study the hot surface ignition probability under these conditions. Visual observation and thermocouples attached on the metal surface were used to indicate the hot surface ignition from the measured temperatures. Results show that the type of metal has a noticeable effect on the hot surface ignition, while ventilation speed has a mixed influence on ignition. Different types of liquid fuels also show different ranges of ignition temperatures. Results from this work can be used to help understand equipment mine fires and develop mitigation strategies.

A 0.5 m (20 in) diameter high pressure natural gas pipeline crosses over a coal mine located in Central Utah. Ground movement induced by the mining operation could possibly place excessive strain on the pipeline causing it to rupture. The mining operation extracts coal from two seams using the room and pillar method. The seams are situated one on top of the other and both lie directly under the pipeline. At present, only the upper seam is being mined beneath the pipeline. However, in the future, the mining operation of the lower seam will also affect the pipeline. As would be expected, mining of both coal seams causes surface subsidence. This is especially true when the pillars are extracted during retreat.

"The Freeport-McMoRan Sierrita Crystal Plant produces Copper (II) Sulfate Pentahydrate (CuSO4·5H2O) through a series of cooling crystallizers. In this process, high supersaturation and unwanted spontaneous nucleation promote fine crystals. Seeding through recycled crystal classification can manipulate the crystal size distribution (CSD) for larger crystals. Proper selection of the crystallizer for seeding can prevent spontaneous nucleation and promote final crystal size. This study shows when seeding temperature is closer to the crystallizer temperature, suspension densities in the crystallizers are promoted and overall CSD shifts to a larger size of crystals. INTRODUCTION Figure 1 shows an overview of the crystallization process. The in-plant feed flow, called Pregnant Mother Liquor (PML), enters the first crystallizer and is subsequently cooled through a series of four crystallizers. Specific temperatures are targeted for each crystallizer to ensure the crystallization process is operating within the metastable zone (MSZ). The discharged flow from crystallizer #5 then enters two cyclones. The overflow from the cyclones contains smaller crystals providing seed crystals for crystallizer #5. The underflow from the cyclones begins the drying process. The overflow from crystallizer #5 enters cyclone #3 for removal of fine crystals and seeding purposes. The underflow from cyclone #3 has the capability to provide seed crystals for crystallizer #1 or crystallizer #2. The overflow leaves the system as Spent Mother Liquor (SML). Undersize crystals dissolve into the PML and return back to crystallizer #1.THEORIES AND METALLURGICAL TESTS Seeding requires an understanding of the crystal size, solution temperature and amount of crystals that enter the crystallizers (1). For the seed crystal size, classified crystal seeds can prevent fine crystals returning back into the system which eventually leads to excessive agglomeration (2). Proper selection of the crystallizer can ensure seeding at an appropriate temperature. Seeding at a temperature much lower or higher than the saturation temperature promotes spontaneous nucleation. Typically, seeding between 4-5°F below the saturation temperature is acceptable (5). A general rule of thumb is to add the seed crystals at the temperature between the solubility curve and the metastable zone. An experiment conducted by Mettler-Toledo AutoChem, Inc. indicates seeding close to the solubility curve rather than the metastable zone promotes a lower supersaturation and nucleation rate but yields a higher growth rate and a greater number of larger crystals (1). The amount of seed crystals can not only change the suspension density but also narrows the width of the MSZ in the crystallizers. An experiment conducted by Jaroslav Nyvlt reports with the crystals absent, the maximum allowable undercooling is 6.3 degrees at a cooling rate, 5°C/hour. With the presence of crystals, it narrows the MSZ width to 2.2 degrees (4). Industrial crystallizers normally operate at suspension densities between 15% and 25% by mass. When suspension densities are lower than 15%, it increases the risk of primary nucleation and the probability of incrustations; on the other hand, if the suspension densities are greater than 25%, it can cause a greater attrition rate and increase the probability of deposits (6). Moreover, operating suspension densities between 15% and 25% are also sufficient to minimize supersaturation rate which promotes crystal growth over nucleation (2, 6)."

General widespread interest in fine coal cleaning circuits did not occur in the United States until the mid 1960's. Up until this period the relatively low price for which bituminous coal was sold did not justify for many operators the capital and maintenance costs associated with the beneficiation and drying of fine coal. However, with current growing interest in this area, the introduction of new types of process equipment along with modifications to existing components is occuring to maximize the recovery of coal fines. In 1973 Derrick Manufacturing Corporation introduced high frequency screening machinery into the coal industry. The first design consisted of a 4 ft. wide 18 ft. long single deck screen frame with three 100 mesh woven wire screen surfaces divided by repulping troughs for the addition of wash water. In addition, a special slotted rubber dewatering deck was installed on the discharge end of the unit to assure adequate dewatering of the screen oversize. This panel had nominal 25 mesh X 3.0" slotted openings. The machine was also equipped with a special high speed-low amplitude (3600 RPM .032" % AMP.) integral vibrator.

The availability of environmentally acceptable and reliable energy sources is an important issue for Federal, State, and local planners. A cooperative program by the U.S. Geological Survey, State geological surveys, and the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a national GIS-based systematic effort to collect, analyze, and depict data characterizing the relationship between restrictions to mining and the potential development of the Nation's coal resources. Land use/environmental and technologic/geologic restrictions are identified within selected 1:24,000-scale, 130-to 150-sq-km 7.5-min quadrangles and applied as overlays to maps of coal-bed thickness, depth, and mined-out areas. Tonnages of original, mined and lost-in-mining, remaining, restricted, and available resources are calculated. Resultant data files are transferred to the Bureau of Mines for recoverability and cost analysis.

Ventilation and refrigeration strategies for the 3000/3500 orebodies, Mount Isa Mines, Australia were reviewed. The orebodies lie between 1,200 and 1,800 m below surface and are characterised by steep geothermal gradients, intensively mechanised stoping methods and high ambient air temperatures in summer. Providing acceptable working conditions under these situations is difficult and costly. The ventilation air quantity required in the 3000/3500 orebodies exceeds 550 m3/s when the production rate is greater than 2.5 million tonnes per year. The maximum quantity that can be supplied and exhausted using the existing intake and return ventilation system is estimated at about 630 m3/s. For production rates greater than 3 million tonnes per year, either new intake and return airways will need to be developed or innovative approaches such as controlled partial recirculation used. A description is given of technical and economic investigations conducted at Mount Isa into controlled partial recirculation. During these investigations, a major field trial of a controlled partial recirculation system was undertaken with results indicating that an acceptable working environment can be achieved practically and economically utilising this approach. The cost involved in controlled partial recirculation for supplying the required ventilation quantity when the production of 3000/3500 orebodies exceeds 3 million tonnes per year is examined. A cost comparison between recirculation and other conventional alternatives such as new surface shaft or underground booster fans is included. The results indicate that the option of a new surface shaft will incur a high initial capital cost and moderate annual operating costs. The alternative of underground booster fans will necessitate a moderate capital cost and very high operating costs. Controlled partial recirculation, in this case, offers both the lowest capital and operating costs of the three options evaluated.

SUMMARY La Granja copper deposit, in terms of volume, is among the five largest deposits in the world and represents reserves of three thousand million tones. The field consists of a 40 m. thick layer of copper lying over the secondary ore and further down the primary copper. The flotation process has indicated a recovery rate of 88 to 90 percent and concentrates of 27 to 32 percent of copper. The acid leaching process of low grade ore produces financially acceptable results. To carry out the project, it is necessary to build long distance pipelines and a port. Both the Feasibility Study and the Environmental Impact Study on the project have been approved by the Peruvian government. INTRODUCTION La Granja is located in the district of Querecoto, province of Chota, in the department of Cajamarca, in the Northwest of the country (Figure 1). Geographically it is situated on the eastern slopes of the Andean mountains at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,700 m.a.s.1. (Figure 1). The site is an 8 hour car ride from the city of Chiclayo, capital of the department. The first 60 km. are over a paved road and the remaining distance is over a narrow hard dirt road. The copper porphyry of La Granja was discovered between 1969 to 1971 during some geochemical prospecting activities carried out by the State mining institution, Ingeomin (currently Ingemmet). From 1978 to 1982, Ingemmet continued with its geochemical and geophysical studies supported by a German technical assistance program. A total of 19 bore- holes were drilled (5,814 m.) and a 90 m. long tunnel made. This study calculated reserves of 175 million MT. In 1993, Minero Peru drew up a technical-financial study based on the above studies and proposed a 12 year extraction operating program: 20,000 MT daily using the leaching process, followed by 13 years of operation using the flotation process with the same daily volumes. he selection of mill design parameters to suit the applica­tion requirements can result in quite different operating parame­ters for each generic type of application, even though the basic mechanical layout of the mills may remain similar. The selection of the type and size of grinding media is very important to efficient and cost-effective operation, and to ensuring that the milled product achieves the required properties. Accordingly, the grinding media selection is seen as an integral part of the mill design. Consideration of the requirement for classification is important in order to achieve the optimum mill and circuit performance. This can lead to the circuit feed not being classified for a steady feed with minimal slimes and a low size reduction ratio. Feed containing on-size particles would be deslimed by open circuit classification. Closed circuit classification is performed where the feed fluctuates. The rheological characteris­tics of the circuit feed slurry can have an influence on mill performance, and needs to be allowed for. A common misconception frequently encountered is the belief that "a mill is just a mill". This is not the case with stirred types of mills, since the operating parameters selected for the mill can have a large effect on the product characteristics. For example, horizontal shaft high speed stirred mills have a com­pletely different grinding action to vertical shaft low to medium speed stirred mills, which results in large differences between the surface area produced at a given product size (Liddell, 1986). Hence, it can be misleading to apply test results or design procedures obtained from one type of mill to other types for scale-up. The Metprotech stirred mill, as applied in the mining and minerals industries, is a low to medium speed vertical shaft mill. The basic design has been discussed previously (Liddell, 1989). Currently, the largest mills that have been manufactured have an installed power of 400 kW. The largest chamber volume at this power is 6000 litres, containing IO t of grinding media. It is intended that the installed power will increase up to lMW as applications requiring larger sizes arise.

The Sotra Link Project is a major infrastructure project in Norway involving the design, construction, financing and maintenance of several underground and surface structures between Sotra island and the city of Bergen, among them 23 tunnel portals, 12.5 km of tunnels and a 900 m long suspension bridge. This paper describes the benefits in applying a Building Information Modelling (BIM) approach to tunnelling, from Early Design to the Detail Design Phase. The BIM application to the Sotra Link Project resulted in several improvements, such as efficient handling of clashes and inconsistencies, deeper understanding of effective design choices (reduction of errors), more efficient communication between designers, enhanced control of project quantities and costs. The advantages of the BIM approach during the ongoing Construction Phase are also explained.

In collaboration with Kennametal Inc. and corry rubber corporation, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) developed a drill bit isolator to address noise overexposures associated with roof bolting machines in underground coal mines. NIOSH laboratory studies confirmed that the drill bit isolator reduces noise during drilling. Field studies were needed to confirm that a noise reduction could be obtained under working conditions and that the device was sufficiently durable. This paper reports results of field tests of the device conducted at five underground coal mines. Noise reduction was assessed by comparing the operator?s noise exposure during drilling with and without the drill bit isolator. Durability was assessed by recording the number of holes and total feet drilled with each bit isolator until either the test period ended or the device failed. The results from these tests showed that the device is an effective noise control in a mine environment. The field-tested drill bit isolators provided a noise reduction of 3-5 db(A). Of nine devices tested for durability, five exceeded 610 m (2,000 ft) drilled and two exceeded 762 m (2,500 ft) drilled before failure. Durability issues found in the field tests led to final production optimizations that have resulted in a commercially available product for drilling with 35-mm- (1.3-in.-) diameter roof bits and hexagonal drill steels.

The west central Upper Peninsula of Michigan contains a large resource of graphitic slate. The slate has potential industrial use as a substitute for shale currently used in the production of portland cement. Some of the unweathered slate, however, has a high concentration of pyritic sulfur that can create emission problems when processed in a kiln. A low-cost method to reduce the sulfur content of the slate through the optimization of pyrite oxidation in a bio-heap leaching operation was investigated. In this study, optimal conditions for the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans were created to promote pyrite oxidation and, therefore, sulfur removal from the slate. Preliminary lab scale flask tests using crushed and sized slate (-40 + 100 mesh) and T. ferrooxidans bacteria in a sulfuric acid medium resulted in 70% oxidation of pyrite over a one-month period. Subsequent column leaching tests on coarser materials (-3/8+1/4 in.) operated for six months resulted in a maximum reduction of total sum of 75%. These data suggest that bio-heap leaching to remove sulfur from the slate for use as a kiln feed material is viable.

The technical excellence of separation achieved in a mineral concentration process, or any other process where two constituents of any kind are physically separated from each other, is expressed uniquely and quantitatively by the Separation Efficiency: ES = (R ? Rg) where R is the percentage of the valuable constituent and Rg the percentage of the waste appearing in the concentrate. The Separation Efficiency meets all the usual requirements of a true efficiency and is independent of the nature of the process used. It can be visualized as the percentage of the feed material that, in effect, actually undergoes complete separation while the rest of the feed is distributed randomly and unchanged into the two separation products.

In an industrialized nation, as the process of industrialization continues, the ratio of the value of production of non-metallic to metallic minerals normally increases gradually over a period of years. For example, in the United States, the ratio of the value of production of non-metals to metals now is approximately two-to-one. Those of us who come from California like to think that we inherit the mantle of the old hard-rock miner, but the truth of the matter is that, in California, of the total value of mineral production exclusive of fuels, 97% comes from non-metallic - industrial - minerals. Since the industrial minerals furnish a principal source of raw materials for the construction and chemical processing industries and since these two industries, in industrialized nations, generally increase directly with increasing population, the future of industrial mineral production both in the United States and throughout the world is indeed bright. Because of the importance of industrial mineral production, it often surprises those of us in the industrial mineral industry to find that industrial minerals are poorly understood by many of our colleagues in the mining industry. I think that one reason for this comprehension of the industrial mineral industry is that the education of both geologists and mining engineers still markedly emphasizes exploitation of the metals.

"INTRODUCTION The vision for a “Mine Escape Vehicle” (MEV) is to provide capabilities to better enable underground travel to allow miners to escape to safety in the event of a major mine emergency such as a fire or explosion. Enhanced transportation and survival capability such as a MEV may have minimized or eliminated the loss of life associated with several of the mine disasters that occurred in 2006, which together resulted in the deaths of 19 miners. Although the most desirable response in an emergency is for the miners exit the mine, if escape proved to be impossible, the miners could use the vehicle to proceed to an underground point of refuge to await rescue. Under a NIOSH contract issued in April 2008, Raytheon developed a conceptual vehicle design including (1) the capacity to provide life support functions for a number of miners, (2) operate in a reduced oxygen atmosphere with little or no visibility, and (3) travel at speeds faster than miners could walk out of the mine. The proposed MEV concept envisioned modification of a personnel carrier (a.k.a. a “mantrip”) that would be used every day during normal mine operations, not a specialized vehicle reserved only for or dedicated solely to escape. The MEV concept also included escape aids that are detachable from the vehicle in the event that the vehicle must be abandoned on the way out of the mine and the dismounted miners had to proceed on foot. To advance MEV development, NIOSH awarded a second contract in 2010 to Raytheon to build, test, and evaluate the performance of a proof-of-concept MEV that culminated in a 7-month performance evaluation of vehicle in an Eastern Kentucky coal mine (Figure 1). User feedback and lessons learned from the proof-of-concept vehicle evaluation provided support for the general MEV approach, guidance related to the practicality of MEV capabilities, and indication of specific technology shortcomings for this application."

The use of a laboratory-scale magnetic fluid-based separator for coal separations was examined. A Frantz laboratory magnetic separator was modified by fabricating new pole pieces of the appropriate geometry to provide the proper magnetic field gradients. Two separation chambers, which were constructed of Plexiglas, were designed to fit between the pole pieces. A commercially available, water-based, ferromagnetic fluid was used as the separating medium. The separating density was changed by varying the current intensity of the electromagnet coil. Both batch and continuous separations were made using 0.59 x 0.50-mm and 0.18 x 0. 15-mm coal. The results are compared to those obtained using organic liquids.

4.1 THE GENERAL COMPOSITION AND PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS Clay-based grouts are visco-plastic systems; they are made by adding structure-forming reagents to a clay mineral mortar. Small amounts of cement and various chemical ad¬ditives constitute the reagents. If necessary, fillers also are added. The distinguishing feature of clay-based grouts is that throughout their entire stabilization period they do not form a crystallized structure as does cement grout. The structure of stabilized clay-based grouts does not deteriorate during minor rock movement or upon the initiation of blast¬ing during the construction of a shaft or a drift. Because they can possess good rheological properties during the ini¬tial structure-forming period relative to cement grouts, clay¬based grouts are not easily eroded from large fractures and karstic cavities by flowing ground water. In addition, their finely dispersed clay particles facilitate a greater fracture penetration capacity, especially in dual porosity rocks. Numerous investigations of the structural-mechanical and rheological properties of clay-based grouts by STG have demonstrated that the most effective grouts for pre¬venting the inflow of ground water into underground work¬ings are grouts that have a cement content of 8 to 10% (90 to 120 kg/m3) of the clay grout by mass. The grout should have a density of 1.18 to 1.30 T/m3. Various additional substances and chemicals can be added as additional fillers and structure-forming reagents. In pure ground water at temperatures above freezing, sodium silicate in the amount of 0.8 to 1 % by mass normally is the only structure-forming reagent that is necessary if the proper clay is selected and if it is available. The production process for making clay-based grout is divided into two stages: 1) the production of an initial clay mortar with specified properties and 2) the production of a clay-cement additive grout mixture using the initial grout along with the structure-forming reagents, including the ce¬ment. The properties of clay-based grouts depend on the phys¬ical-mechanical properties of the initial clay mineral, the properties of the cement and the properties of the chemical reagents that are added. 4.1.1 TECHNOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CLAY-BASED GROUTS The dynamic shear stress' To, the viscosity 11, the static shear stress2 0, the maximum shear stress of the structured that the rheological and structural-mechanical prop¬erties of clay-based grouts must fall within the following limits: the dynamic shear stress To = 50 to 200 Pa; the viscosity -9 = 0.02 to 0.07 Pa sec; the static shear stress 0 = 150 to 600 Pa; the plasticity strength Pm of the structure one minute after preparation (according to P.A. The general relationship of the change in the structural strength of clay-based grouts relative to stabilization time is shown in Fig. 32. The figure shows that the structure-form¬ing process for clay-based grouts is characterized by three stages. These stages correspond to the time periods required for conducting the principal operations during the injection of the grout into a fractured aquifer as described below. Stage I, corresponding to the time period T1, reflects the small development of structural strength during early stabi¬lization. During this time, the structural strength must not preclude the capability to pump the grout. The time Tl must correspond to the length of pumping time from the moment water is shut off and mixing occurs until the pump stops forcing the grout through the manifold block and pipeline into the fractured rock as described subsequently herein. Stage II, corresponding to the time interval T2, reflects a sharp but controllable increase in the structural strength of the grout. The length of time period T2 is controlled by the addition of appropriate reagents. Stage III produces the final value of the structural strength. This final strength is used to design the dimensions of the isolation curtain. Consequently, the development of grouts is guided by two principal criteria: 1) the grout must develop the highest possible structural-mechanical properties and 2) it must be able to be pumped by a piston pump prior to final stabili¬zation. The Cripple Creek diatreme-intrusive complex is known primarily for its vein telluride-gold ores. It is also known for the great vertical range of its major veins - >990 m (>3250 ft). Not as well-documented, however, are the ores dispersed into the wallrocks adjacent to veins, the ores associated with hydrothermal and tectonic breccias, or mineralized zones within fluvial, lacustrine and volcaniclastic rocks de- posited within the diatreme complex. The ore-gangue minerals were precipitated from oxidized, alkaline fluids that yielded an abundance of carbonate, sulfate and oxide minerals along with minor base metal sulfides and precious metal tellurides. Wallrock alteration is limited adjacent to veins and is more extensive within hydrothermal and tectonic breccias. Cripple Creek background The Cripple Creek district has a spectacular production history. More than 653 t (21 million oz) of gold were recovered between 1891 and 1959. Early published accounts documented the principal production from narrow- sheeted vein systems (Cross and Penrose, 1895; Lindgren and Ransome, 1906; Loughlin, 1927; Loughlin and Koschmann, 1935). Production also came from spectacular open-space fillings within the Cresson diatreme, also known as the Cresson “blow-out” (Patton, 1917; Patton and Wolf, 1915). There is no straightforward and systematic method for adequately measuring blast damage in on-going mining operations. This paper considers various techniques available for the measurement of blast damage, making particular reference to recent underground hardrock mine studies. This paper concludes by indicating the importance of understanding and accounting for geology and emphasizes the need for a robust damage-audit procedure.
