Underground mining at Kanowna Belle commenced in July 1998, using a sublevel open stoping method. The use of this stoping method necessitated the use of a cemented fill material for filling primary and secondary stope voids. A detailed engineering study recommended the construction of a cemented aggregate fill (CAF) system for Block A, in favour of paste fill. The CAF system consisted of a crushing and screening plant, a surface binder preparation plant and an underground fill station. Conventional underground dump trucks were used for CAF delivery. Since CAF plant commissioning in March 1999, 1.2 million tonnes of CAF have been placed underground. CAF segregation was the most significant quality control issue during CAF system operation. At the hangingwalls of filled stopes, CAF segregation sometimes occurred to such the extent that the resulting fill material was essentially uncemented coarse aggregate. This caused some CAF dilution during the extraction of adjacent secondary stopes. Numerous CAF were prepared on site for strength testing. A relationship has been formulated that allows estimation of the CAF uniaxial compressive strength in MPa, based on the cement content (c) and porosity (n), as follows. [ ] Practice at Kanowna Belle has confirmed that laboratory testing results cannot be applied for optimising the mix design of cemented rock fills that do not exhibit debris flow behaviour during placement. The grain flow characteristics and consequent marked segregation dominate the in situ fill strength. A detailed review of backfill requirements for the lower mine indicated that the total net present cost of CAF and paste systems was similar. Several significant operational advantages offered by a paste system have resulted in its selection for the remaining mine life. The construction of a paste fill system at Kanowna Belle is currently in progress.

INTRODUCTION The mining of gold commenced on the Witwatersrand in 1884, and reached a mature state by about 1910, when nearly 20 million metric tons were mined. Mining has continued on the central Witwatersrand, the area of the first mining, at a similar rate until recent years. As a result, well over 1 billion tons of gold mining wastes have been dumped along a line over 80 km long, centred on Johannesburg and stretching from Randfontein in the west to Nigel in the east. (see Figure 1). The population of this conurbation, which straddles the line of mining, has grown to about 5 million. In 1922 uranium was first discovered as a constituent of the ore (and thus of the wastes). Investigations in the 1940's revealed that values near Johannesburg were low, but that, at the western and eastern ends of the central Witwatersrand line, and in the new areas centred on the towns of Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Welkom up to 200 km from Johannesburg, values were adequate to permit uranium recovery. Commercial production commenced in 1952, and by 1979 over 100 000 tons of uranium oxide had been produced. There thus arises on the central Witwatersrand nearly 1,3 billion tons of slimes containing an average of about 0,005% uranium and about 1,8% FeS2. The material grading is about 70%-75µm, and the primary mineral is silica (over 85%). The material is contained in dams constructed hydraulically. A typical dam has an area of about 100 hectares and there are over 6000 ha under slimes dams in the area of concern. The treatment of these dams for uranium recovery commenced in 1977. The situation has thus arisen whereby potential uranium ores have unwittingly been dumped in significant quantities within a major metropolis over a period of nearly a century. The purpose of this note is to review the experience arising from the potential hazard over a considerable time.

Recently, liquid carbon dioxide (L-CO2) blasting technology has attracted attention due to its good fracturing effect and safety performance, especially in coal seam permeability improvement. This paper analyzes the blasting effect of L-CO2 based on experiments and studies the fracturing mechanism from the perspective of stress wave action via theoretical analysis and peridynamic simulations. The results indicate that L-CO2 blasting achieves a good fracturing effect without forming a crush zone, and the loading rate and strength of the stress wave are key factors.

The mechanistic or phenomenological approach to ball milling involving the, concepts of particulate selection and breakage functions with particle population balance models has been well established over the past decade (c.f., the review articles by Austin (1) Herbst and Mika, (2) and Snow (3)). Initial efforts to apply this approach concentrated on batch milling, but since most milling in industrial practice is continuous, much recent research has been directed to extending this approach to continuous milling. The primary difference between batch and continuous milling processes is the relative importance of material mixing and transport in the mill in the latter case. Much analytical (4-8) and some experimental (9-15) work on the effect of mill mixing and transport on milling has been recently reported. Much of the analytical work has naturally centered around extension of the well-developed concepts that have been applied to chemical reactors, (16-18) Fortunately, it has been found(1) that most milling processes are analogous to first-order chemical reactions so that the combined effects of material transport and reaction (breakage) can be handled by the relatively simple segregated flow concepts. In May of 1996, Twentymile Coal Co. began Longwall mining in the Foidel Creek Mine's East Mine District. These Longwall panels are some of the longest in the world (5.48 km/18,000 ft) with very difficult and challenging geometry. The conveyance system is 1,800 mm (72 in) wide, has a 4,500 mtph (5,000 stph) capacity and employs multiple tripper drives. The trippers include traditional powering designs as well as unique regeneration and braking designs. Several components were developed specifically for this application including a mobile tail brake. Control algorithms were carefully developed and tested via computer modeling. A world production record was achieved in the third month of operation and over 1 million tons were mined in June 1997.

Gravitational field anomalies have been observed over many igneous intrusives of medium (4000 km2) to small (100 km2) size in outcrop area. These studies give good results because the residual anomalies can be separated from larger scale crustal anomalies and density contrasts usually are present. Although unique solutions are not possible, the analysis of the gravity anomalies can put limits upon the geologic interpretation of such bodies. Three examples in Montana, U. S. A. are discussed: (1) the Boulder Batholith, a late Cretaceous quartz monzonite series of intrusives of 4000 km2 outcrop area; (2) the Little Rocky Mountains, an up-domed area, in which an Eocene porphyry (130 km2) has intruded the Precambrian crystallines and lower Cambrian sediments; and (3) the Crazy Mountains, an Eocene diorite (100 km2), which has intruded the Paleozoic and Mesozoic sediments. In both the Boulder Batholith and the Little Rocky Mountains, intrusive rocks are less dense than the surrounding rocks and negative anomalies are found (40 and 28 mgal, resp.). In the Crazy Mountains, the intrusive is more dense than the surrounding sediments and a sharp positive residual anomaly of 42 mgal is observed. The analyses of the gravity anomalies predict that: (1) the thickness of the Boulder Batholith is on the order of 10 to 15 kms and is concave upward; (2) the Little Rocky Mountain syenite is not a simple laccolith, but is T-shaped and extends in depth to about 16 kms; (3) the Crazy Mountain diorite is not a simple small scale series of stocks, but a large connected body extending in depth 5 kms to the basement (although nothing can be said of it within the basement because there is little density contrast). The analyses of the anomalies place important limits on both the areal and depth extent of the intrusive bodies. Of all possible geophysical techniques, gravity studies offer the most promise in the determination of the shape in depth of intrusive bodies.

Geologic condition is one of the most important factors for longwall mining operations, especially, the existence of faults limits the mineable area, or cause stress variations at the longwall face. Recently, a longwall panel passed through a fault at the Shoal Creek Mine of Drummond Company, Inc. The fault was situated diagonally along the longwall face and the coal seam was displaced up to 2.4 m (8.0 ft) in a mode of a normal fault. LoSCoMS (Longwall Strata Control and Maintenance System) was used for monitoring shield pressure every minute and interpreting data in terms of setting, developing and final pressures. The results of the analysis regarding the influence of the fault on the shield pressure are presented.

In order to drive tunnels with low overburden in town regions, it is necessary to give a quantitative prognosis for the deformation of the underground as well as of the tunnel-lining and of its stability. These problems and their solutions are illustrated by the works for a two-track-railway-tunnel in Bochum (Ruhrdistrict). In this case the most important problems consisted in passing below buildings in a vertical distance to the fundamentals of only 3.20 m and a railway earthdam with rapid train traffic in a distance of 4 m under the dam. The results of measurements from other comparable tunnels and finite-element-computations were used to prognose the settlements on the surface and in the ground, their distributions and their development in time. To obtain these values at the site, a special system of tunnel driving was executed. The tunnel was excavated with the newest type of tunneling-machine from DEMAG, cutting an inclined front, immediately followed by a special temporary support of shotcrete and inclined steel-ribs. By using theoretical and empirical methods to assess the behavior of the tunnel and underground and by executing an optimal driving system in technical as well as economical aspects, the expected behavior, expressed in quantitative values, was almost equivalent to those received by control measurements.

The minerals barite (BaSO, -barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO, -barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds, whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modem industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry, which in 1990 consumed about 90% of the world's production of 4.9 Mt as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid called mud that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The remaining 10% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite is found throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity-filling, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world's demand for barite is expected to increase because of the world's need for oil and gas. Geologic circumstances are favorable for the discovery of new deposits of commercial value. Witherite, desirable as a raw material for the production of barium chemicals, is much less common and abundant than barite.

The Potomac River Tunnel (PRT) is the next major phase of the DC Clean Rivers Program. The design-build PRT project includes a 5.5-mile-long, 18-foot-internaldiameter tunnel, seven shafts, and two underground connections to existing structures. Major challenges include tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation though mixed-face conditions within a buried paleo-channel and an approximately 1,350-foot-long rock/ soil transition zone; construction beneath the elevated Whitehurst Freeway; tunneling beneath an existing luxury residential building and existing transit tunnels with limited clearance; and complex coordination with a variety of federal, regional, and local stakeholders. This paper describes the overall project scope, geotechnical conditions along the alignment, and primary design/construction challenges and mitigations.

In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore. from a system's point of view, slurry transportation would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alternative examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibiliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. 1. The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then temporarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe- line, and personnel are needed. In a first phase (Fig. 2). a hydraulic hoisting installation with crushing and grinding units, storage facilities, and pumps has been located at a level of about 400 to 600 m (1310 to 1970 ft) below the surface. Current regulations for fire suppression systems in underground coal mines to protect conveyor belt installations have been in place since the Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was enacted. Over time, the coal conveyer equipment being used and ventilation conditions underground have changed significantly, particularly the width of the conveyor belts and the use of belt air at the face. The effect of these new conditions on the effectiveness of suppression systems during a fire is not known. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study to evaluate the effect of air velocity, water sprinkler activation temperature and a limited water application time on the effectiveness of water sprinkler fire suppression systems to extinguish large-scale conveyor belt fires. The fire tests were conducted using both new and used 1.8-m-wide, fire-resistant rubber belt that met the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) flame-resistant requirement specified in Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, part 18, section 18.65 (also known as the 2G test). Tests were conducted using standard response sprinklers with activation temperatures of 68° C and 141° C at air velocities of 0.5 and 5.1 m/s. Two tests were conducted at both air velocities for each sprinkler activation temperature, one using a new belt and one with a used belt. The results showed that the suppression system was able to suppress the fires in ten minutes to the point that a miner could extinguish it with a fire hose. However, in several of the tests, the fire reestablished itself a few minutes after the sprinkler water supply was cut off and quickly grew out of control. This report discusses the large-scale experimental configuration, the installation specifications of the fire suppression system and the results and conclusions regarding the effect of air velocity, sprinkler activation temperature and limited water application on the suppression system performance.

The Plymouth Tunnel forms part of the 16-mile long route of the Purple Line Light Rail Project promoted by the Maryland Transit Administration. The tunnel is approximately 1,220 feet in length with a shallow vertical alignment located beneath a residential area. Challenging mixed ground conditions included surficial soils, decomposed Saprolite, and highly weathered to fresh rock requiring the use of the Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) for construction. This paper discusses innovative approaches implemented during construction as well as challenges faced during planning and installation of a spray-applied permanent concrete liner.

Hand-transmitted vibration (HTV) exposure is associated with various health risks for operators of mobile mining equipment (MME). The case–control research was conducted to determine the musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) risks associated with exposure to HTVs in the exposed (case) and non-exposed (control) groups. HTV readings were measured at the interface between the hand and the steering device using the SV 105B triaxial hand accelerometer connected to the SV106 human vibration analyzer involving 40 MME operators in accordance with ISO 5349:2001 guidelines. A questionnaire survey was also carried out among both the study groups using Cornell Musculoskeletal Discomfort Questionnaire. The European Union's 2002/44/E.C. was used to assess the health risks posed to the MME operators. Twenty-eight out of the 40 MMEs were generating HTVs exceeding the stipulated daily limits of vibration, putting 70% of the operators at increased risk for developing MSDs. The case group was found to have an elevated risk of exposure with odds ratio (OR) 7.56 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.159, 49.39) and OR 12.80 (95% CI, 2.436, 67.285) times more likely than the control group to suffer discomfort in the left shoulder and left wrist, respectively, indicating increased risk of exposure to HTV. Additionally, cases had elevated risk associated with exposure to tobacco, OR 9.35(95% CI, 1.856, 47.129) compared to those who did not use tobacco. MSDs were more prevalent in the case group compared to the control group. This observation was validated by the field investigations and the responses of MME operators to the questionnaires.

Most of the reported coal spontaneous combustion events occur in surface and underground mines where low rank coals (i.e., subbituminous and lower for this particular studies) are extracted indicating their high propensities for spontaneous combustion. Low rank coals have high moisture content (15 to 45%) and are capable of absorbing more moisture in dried condition. However, it is hard to induce the initial stage of self-heating process for the low rank coal using the current laboratory R70 testing method — a method widely used in the coal industry. Like a sponge, dry low rank coals can absorb water vapor in the air while the heat contained in the moist air is transferred to coal and served as the required activation energy to initiate the coal self-heating process. In order to prove this theorem and quantify the effects, the R70 adiabatic oxidation testing method has been improved to introduce a controlled moist flow into the coal reaction vessel. Tests using the new method and its setup on low rank coals showed that the initial self-heating process of coal sample can be greatly accelerated by the added water vapor — impossible with the regular R70 method. Once the self-heating is sustained, the removal of air moisture can further accelerate the process.

Trona, Na3(CO3)(HCO3) ? 2H20, is mined in quantity from saline facies of the Eocene Green River Formation of southwestern Wyoming. The Green River deposits are the world's largest known resource of natural sodium carbonates. An estimated 127 billion tons of trona ore are known to occur in beds exceeding 4 ft in thickness (Wiig and others, 1995). Twenty-five trona beds, exceeding 3 ft in thickness, and covering at least 100 mil have been identified. The beds are numbered sequentially in ascending stratigraphic order. Trona beds underlie more than 850 mil (bed 17) and are up to 37 ft thick (bed 1) (Culbertson, 1966). Five underground mines, operating in beds 17, 19, 20, 24, and 25, process trona to produce soda ash (sodium carbonate). A total of 11,837,703 short tons of soda ash were produced from 17.1 million tons of trona ore in 1997 (Kostick and Clark, 1998). A detailed study of trona bed 17, using techniques of petrography and X-ray diffraction, has been undertaken in the Solvay trona mine, near Green River, Wyoming. A continuous, vertical-channel sample was taken from near the production shaft for this study. At this location, bed 17 is 12.6 ft thick and includes several stratigraphic markers that are easily correlated throughout the mine and in surrounding drill cores. Bed 17 in this area averages 90% trona through its entire thickness (Wiig and others, 1995) and 95-100% trona in the lower two-thirds of the bed. Mineral impurities include water-insoluble dolomite, quartz, pyrite, clays, and other minerals and partially water-soluble northupite and shortite. Northupite, Na3Mg(CO3)2C1, contributes to chloride contamination in the soda-ash product and is concentrated in the upper one-third of bed 17, which is left behind as roof rock. Northupite has two modes of occurrence: (1) as bedded strata with dolomite, chert, clay, and shortite and (2) between primary trona crystals in trona spar. Petrographic and mineralogic data indicate that this section of bed 17 was deposited subaqueously during its early and late history and may have undergone periods of deposition in a subaerial or marshy environment. Stratigraphic data indicate that trona accumulated at an annual rate of 2-4 in. per year. During trona deposition, dolomite, CaMg(C03)2, precipitated in parting layers when new water entered the lake, freshening supplies of calcium and magnesium. The lack of clay minerals in the trona facies suggests water input may be by means of springs, as opposed to overland flow. Clay occurrences in thicker dolomitic partings within the trona facies indicate periods of episodic overland flow, possibly resulting from storms in the surrounding basin.

Tunnelling with hydraulic drills has been a success in Norway. In the fall of 1976 excavation of tunnels for the development of the Aabjoera scheme was started. Two and a half years later a total of 25 kilometers of tunnels are completed. During the most busy period 5 rigs with hydraulic drills were in operation. GENERAL INFORMATION. Aabjoera Hydro Electric Plant is located in the central part of Norway (Fig. 1). The scheme covers a mountaineous area between the Tosen Fiord and the valley of Namdalen. Water from the area of precipitation is transferred through 5 tunnels to the main reservoir. From here the water is conducted via a 10 km long, unlined supply tunnel down to the Kolsvik power station. The power station is situated underground with a short tailrace tunnel out in the fiord. Average head of water is 507 m. The Aabjoera plant is jointly owned by Helgeland Kraftlag A/S, 8650 Mosjøen and Nord-Trøndelag Elektrisitetsverk, 7700 Steinkjer. The Civil Engineering Division of the latter company has acted as Consulting Engineers for the scheme. General contractors for the whole scheme has been Ing. F. Selmer A/S, Box 6035, Etterstad, Oslo 6.

Naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in water from inactive mines and several wells in the Keystone area of the Black Hills. Keystone City Well #4 showed a total arsenic concentration of 69 parts per billion (ppb) during pumping in 2004. The well is not used currently except for arsenic-removal research. Water also can be pumped from a mine shaft in the abandoned Keystone ? Columbia ? Bullion gold mines, whose interconnected workings flooded after mining ceased in the 1930s. This water has been considered for local supplies, although it would require treatment or blending because of arsenic concentrations. According to historical records, the Bullion Mine produced 100,000 pounds of white arsenic. An aquifer test on the mine workings was performed at a pumping rate of about 550 gallons per minute. The arsenic concentration in pumped water was 33 ppb. In addition to wells within Keystone, samples from the water supply at nearby Mount Rushmore National Memorial have shown arsenic concentrations greater than 10 ppb, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency?s maximum contaminant level for arsenic in drinking water. Limestone-based technology for removal of arsenic from drinking water is an innovative and promising method that has been considered for treatment of water at Keystone. In batch testing with water from Keystone Well #4, limestone removed about 65% of arsenic from solution. A related problem of arsenic removal from drinking water involves disposal of the waste product, which is critical for commercial viability of removal technologies. Current research is investigating thermal stability of the waste in order to determine the potential for recycling of the material during manufacture of cement.

The innovation in a technological field is reflected by the Research and Development (R & D) activity in it. It is explained why patent literature is a more reliable indicator than non-patent literature for the assessment of the R & D activity in the technological fields considered. Consequently the R & D activity is measured in this article through the patent applications filed in the fields considered. The pattern of patent application filings in Drilling, Mining, Tunneling and accessory technologies is analyzed at an international scale over the period 1990-2000. A statistical analysis of the fluctuation of the number of patent applications per year, per country and per technological field is performed. The technological fields are defined on the basis of the internal patent classification used in the European Patent Office. The article attempts to detect the high activity and ?cutting edge? technologies over said period, to relate them to political or financial events and possibly to foresee the ?cutting edge? technologies of the future in which potential investors could be successful. Strong patents are revealed on the basis of the frequency of their citations by the applicants in patent applications or by the patent examiners in the search report. International as well as specific national trends in the innovation are spotted and analyzed.

Anaconda has been active In the Bingham mining district near Tooele, Utah since 1914 when the company acquired International Smelting & Refining Co. Over the years both custom ores and complex Pb-Zn-Cu ores from the district were milled and smelted at International. In 1948 Anaconda acquired the property that covers the present Carr Fork ore body. Since that time active exploration took place in the 50's followed by detailed geological evaluation in the 60's. Convinced that high grade Cu deposits would be found at depth, a deep drilling program commenced in the late 60?s, with intersection of the ore zone in 1969. Following extensive deep drilling in the early 70?s, a feasibility study was conducted in 73-74 with board approval given Sept. 6, 1974. The 9,000 t/d mine-mill complex was budgeted at $217 MM over a 5 year schedule with start-up in Sept., 1979. The following discussion includes the concentrator and surface facility portion of the budget or approximately $60 MM of the scope. Special emphasis will be made on equipment selection and layout.
