The Gulf Coast Region has been the center of extensive lignite exploration and development activity in the past 10 years. Currently, 27.2 Mt (30 million st) of lignite are mined annually, the majority of which is uncovered by large walking draglines. Projections indicate that production could reach 125 Mt (138 million st) by 1990. As mining moves to deeper depths, removal of overburden becomes the decisive factor in mine planning and cost. The geology of a region plays a key role in the selection of an overburden removal system. While alternate stripping methods must be analyzed to determine the most economical and operationally sound method, so far bucketwheel excavator systems seem to be the best method for removing large volumes of soft, unconsolidated material that is found at projected mining depths in the Gulf Coast region. Geology of Gulf Coast Lignites Extent Distribution of the principal tertiary lignite-bearing deposits in the Gulf Coast Lignite province extend from the Texas-Mexico border to the Alabama-Georgia state line (Fig. 1). The lignite-bearing strata includes portions of eight states: Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama. Lignites occur primarily in the Wilcox, Claiborne, and Jackson groups in the Gulf Coast. The uppermost strata of the Midway group in Mississippi and Alabama also contain significant lignite resources. Reserves Commercial lignite seams in the Gulf Coast Lignite province range from 0.6-3 m (2-10 ft) in thickness. The estimated lignite resources throughout the Gulf Coast in seams greater than 0.9 m (3 ft) in thickness and up to 61 m (200 ft) in depth currently are estimated at 32 Gt (35 billion st). Table 1 shows these resources by state. Quality Lignite quality can vary within individual mining areas and seams. However, trends in quality occur because of the depositional environment, age, and west-to-east geographical location. Better quality lignites occur in the Wilcox group in Texas and Louisiana. Poorer quality lignites occur in the northern regions of the Wilcox group and those of the geologically younger Claiborne and Jackson groups. Environmental Conditions Gulf Coast province environmental conditions are ideal for successful mine reclamation. The lignite occurs in flat to moderately rolling terrain, a topography easily reproduced from the spoil dumps or spoil rows developed during the mining operation. High to moderate rainfall facilitates rapid revegetation. Evidence from current mine reclamation programs and ongoing test plot studies indicate that mined lands can be reclaimed to reach premining productivities. Sometimes productivities are even greater than that of premining conditions. Federal laws mandate the presence of refuge alternatives (RAs) in underground coal mines and provide guidelines for harmful gas removal. After an explosion, harmful gases can follow survivors into an RA and can reach a deadly concentration. Investigators from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) tested 12 ventilation system configurations (VSCs) to purge sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tracer gas from a built-in-place (BIP) RA in the Experimental Mine in Bruceton, PA. Using a borehole air supply, tests were conducted with airflows of 750 and 1,000 standard cubic feet per minute (SCFM). Excluding a VSC where the air inlet was 1.98 m (78 in) from the air outlet, the results show that the time to purge the SF6 concentration from 1,000 parts per million (ppm) to 25 ppm ranged from 26 to 29 minutes for an airflow of 750 SCFM and ranged from 18 to 23 minutes for an airflow 1,000 SCFM. Mines can use this information to reduce purge time in case of a mine disaster and determine which VSC to avoid. INTRODUCTION After a fire or an explosion in an underground mine, the concentration of carbon monoxide can reach a fatal level. In a mine disaster, the main goal is to escape. However, if miners cannot escape, they have to migrate to a location to find refuge and, if possible, communication, and a borehole source for a fresh air supply. To ensure survival of the miners, Federal laws mandate the presence of a refuge alternative (RA) within 304.5 m (1,000 ft) of the nearest mining face. In addition, Code of Federal Regulations Title 30 CFR Section 7 sets the guidelines for personnel tracking, RAs, and the removal of noxious gases in underground coal mines (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). Federal regulations define an RA as a protected, secure space with an isolated atmosphere and integrated components (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). There are three types of RAs: portable metal RAs, portable tent-type RAs, and built-in-place (BIP) RAs. A BIP RA is constructed using masonry or other stoppings to create an isolated space in a mined-out area. Blast doors are installed in one or both of the stoppings for the miners to enter the RA. Furthermore, RAs must provide the following components: breathable air, food, water, air monitoring, and harmful gas removal. Federal regulations have emphasized the mandate for breathable air and harmful gas removal in the following words: “Purging or other effective procedures shall be provided for the airlock to dilute the carbon monoxide concentration to 25 ppm” (Mineral Resources, 30 CFR, 2014). The purpose of the mine ventilation system is to provide a sufficient quantity of air to the underground mine workings, to dilute methane and other contaminants, to maintain a suitable working environment, and to prevent accidents from happening (Cheng and Wei, 2014). In addition, the organic nature of coal amplifies risks from poisonous gases, explosions, and fires (Engström et al., 2018). If an underground coal mine ventilation system fails after an explosion, the concentration of toxic gases, most notably carbon monoxide, will increase. Carbon monoxide is dangerous because it creates tissue hypoxia by binding to hemoglobin (Özmen and Aksoy, 2015).

I have to express my surprise and must send a note of warning concerning the use of polyurethane foam as described in a paper by R.N. Torbin and R.F. Kovar, entitled "Innovative Shaft Lining Method," published in your February 1989 edition. In September, 1986, 177 miners lost their lives when they were exposed to fumes downwind from a fire in a tunnel lined with polyurethane foam. Whilst polyurethane exhibits reasonable fire retardent properties in small-scale tests, mass use in a tubular configuration, exacerbated by the furnace effect of cross-radiation, can lead to a rapid, uncontrollable conflagration.

INTRODUCTION The rock mechanics study of the shortwall mining system at Beth-Elkhorn corporation's Hendrix No. 22 Mine is being conducted under contract with the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The objective of the study is to obtain data on surface subsidence over a portion of the mined area, strata subsidence in the mined area, and underground stress changes and displacements in and near natural support elements of the mining system. This study is currently in progress, and only a portion of the results are being presented at this time. The Hendrix No. 22 Mine is located in the moderately rough mountainous terrain of Letcher County in eastern Kentucky. The nearest mine workings to the shortwall area are approximately 1,900 feet distant. The depth of cover over the mined shortwall area varies from 770 feet at Panel 1 to 170 feet at Panel 5 (Figure 1). The strata in the shortwall area is summarized in the three core logs shown in Figure 2. Hole no. 2 is located in approximately the center of the mined shortwall area (Panel 3, Line C, Figure 1). The coal seam in the shortwall area is approximately 4 feet thick and horizontal, although one major ‘roll’ intersects all panels.

Mining methods used to protect the workings in underground salt mines against the destructive activity of natural factors are presented in this paper. Major hazards and methods of elimination of their impact on the stability of workings, were determined. Old and modern technical means and technologies used for protection and preservation of the selected most interesting sites were characterized. The results of surveys and studies allowed proposing the change of mine structure i.e. dividing it into monumental and not-monumental part, which should improve execution of necessary protective works.

Dumper operators are frequently exposed to whole body vibration (WBV) in surface mines. Surface mining activities involve the amalgamation of comparatively high intensity of vibration and extended exposure durations. Efficient risk reduction mandates knowing of important phases of a task that poses a threat to health of dumper operators. So far in India very limited studies have been reported on WBV exposure with regard to surface mines. This paper evaluates WBV of dumper operators based on ISO 2631-1:1997 Standards and European Union (EU) Directive 2002 for different phases of job cycle. Six dumpers were considered for this study and the vibration measurements were made for all the four phases of the job cycle by placing the triaxial accelerometer on the operator’s seat-surface and at the seat-back, independently. The findings of the study revealed that the haulage task (loaded travel and empty travel) remains the chief contributor to vibration exposure according to seat-surface and seat-back measurements. Maximum frequency weighted root mean square (RMS) of 1.12 m/s2 and 1.09 m/s2 were reported for empty travel task for seat-surface and seat-back measurements, respectively. For seat-surface measurements based on RMS, Z axis remains as the dominant axis of vibration for all the dumpers during haulage task, whereas for seat-back measurements, the dominant axis varies between X and Y. Exposure action value (EAV) based on RMS has exceeded the threshold value of 0.5 m/s2 for all the dumpers during loaded travel and empty travel for seat-surface as well as for seat-back measurements.

Sonora Mining Corporation (SMC) operates the 6,000 tonne per day Jamestown open pit gold mine in the Mother Lode district of California. The mine has been in operation since January, 1987, and has produced approximately 7,800 kilograms of gold since start-up. The property consists of five ore bodies lying along a five kilometer stretch of the famous Mother Lode vein system. At present, only the Harvard ore body is being mined. The Harvard pit is centered around a historic underground mine of the same name that was operated from 1896 to 1916. The present ore body averages 2.5 grams gold per tonne as free milling gold and auriferous pyrite. The project consists of the open pit mine and concentrator complex in Tuolumne County, California, and a carbon-in-pulp leach plant located near Yerington, Nevada.

In 2001, the Radomiro Tomic Mine located near Calamq Chile, added a tertiary crushing facility. An 84" wide mobile tripper is used to fill their tertiary crushing storage facility. This paper is a we study to demonstrate the drive and control systems in use on the tripper. Of special note is the design concept used to allow the system to operate multiple motors in both demand and regenerative modes through a single VFD. Also noted is the use of touch screen local controls, handheld radio controls, starting/stopping/ braking philosophies, safety device interfaces, and the local to remote control interface.

INTRODUCTION Construction of a major intercepting sewer in Brooklyn, New York involved tunneling in soil over several subway lines. In two instances the clearance between the subway and sewer was sufficiently close that concern was raised about the influence of the new construction. Prior to each critical crossing, analytical studies were performed which characterized the tunneling influence. It was demonstrated that with adjustments in construction procedures the crossings could be made without affecting the integrity of the subway linings. A comprehensive program of instrumentation and full-time monitoring was undertaken to ensure that any unforeseen adverse developments during crossing would be recognized. The successful crossings were subsequently made with minimal influence. Reported herein are the special construction conditions for the two crossings, the analytical simulation of behavior, and the results of monitoring on the subway linings. SEWER TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION AND EXISTING SUBWAYS The Red Hook Intercepting Sewer is a 2600 m (8600 ft) long tunnel which is part of a major water pollution control project in New York City. For clarity of nomenclature, the sewer is termed a 'tunnel' while the rapid transit structures are termed 'subways'. For routine construction, the tunnel was mined by hand with a 3.2 m (10 ft-5 in.)

INTRODUCTION Block caving is distinguished from other types of mining in its requirements that the mineral body to be extracted must cave after a relatively large tabular open¬ing is created underneath it, and that the caving must be predictable and controllable for both operating and safety reasons. A mineral body that caves readily may present special problems with respect to ground support in the mining access openings, where stability, rather than failure, is the desired objective. The complete ex¬traction of a caving block, which may measure 50 to 100 m on a side and 100 to 300 m in height, tends to create a large void, resulting in significant changes in the ground stress system and a migration of rock from all directions toward the void; these events begin very early in the life of the mine and lead to additional spe¬cial problems with respect to control of ground move¬ments in the mine working areas, in the rock adjacent to the caving stope, and on the subsiding surface above the mine. Thus, the mechanics of an undercut-cave operation involve a broad range of geotechnical subject matter, including the determination of the lithostatic earth stresses, the structural properties of a large jointed rock mass, the flow properties of the fragments after caving, the stability of tunnel-like openings, and the stability and displacements of the rock structure (1 to 2 km in size) that surrounds the ore body. The objectives are achieved by in-place measurement of rock properties, laboratory tests, theoretical structural analyses of the related prob¬lems, measurements of structural behavior in and above the mine, and comparison of theoretical predictions with actual performance in order to interpret and refine the predictive capability. Undercut-cave mining (Julin, et al., 1973) differs from most other methods in that the caving is an essen¬tial and inherent part of the excavation process and in¬volves the movements of millions of cubic meters of rock over distances of hundreds of meters, as compared to the gradual 2-m settling of the overburden typical of full¬caving longwall coal mining. Undercut-cave mining may involve a rock mass on the scale of a 1-km diam open¬pit mine, but mining is several times deeper than that in the open-pit mine; furthermore, a large portion of the rock mass is in a failed, rather than a stable, state. Ground-control problems are inevitable in a situa¬tion where ground movements are occurring on such a large scale, and where the rock mass is expected con¬veniently to cave at one location but to be stable at an¬other. To devise effective responses to these ground¬control problems, one needs to know first of all what is happening, not merely at the point where the symptoms are observed, but more broadly with respect to the be¬havior of the entire mine rock-mass structure over the total area of extraction, including the effects on the sur¬face as well as those underground. Monitoring structural behavior on this scale would require a sizable group of people, if they attempted to measure all the significant mining-induced changes of ground displacement and pressure, even on a 100-m grid of points. The practical approach is to conduct the mea¬surements activity by a judicious sampling, making in¬termittent, concentrated efforts in selected areas of lim¬ited extent to study problems of immediate importance; simultaneously a minimum level of surveillance is main¬tained over the total structure to delineate long-term be¬havior trends in the major structure, which provide the baseline reference data that are so essential for interpre¬tive purposes. Mine-structure behavior depends not only on the mine extraction configuration and sequence, but on the rock structural properties and how they change from one location to another in the mine. Increasing attention is being given to determinations of rock strength and de¬formation by performing mechanical properties tests in place and in the laboratory, and by drawing inferences from the mapping of geologic structure in mine openings as they are driven and from the logging of cores ob¬tained from exploration drilling that may be performed primarily for delineating ore reserves. Monitoring of mine-structure behavior and inter¬preting it in terms of the growing excavations and the structural properties of the rocks have significant im¬pacts on designing the major undercut-cave operations of undercutting and drawing the ore, supporting the ac¬cess openings, and controlling surface subsidence. The purpose of this chapter is to call attention to the com¬mon ground-control problems encountered in undercut¬cave mining, to relate them to the mining process, and to explain the geomechanical approaches to analyzing these problems with emphasis on methods that are most readily available to the mine staff. UNDERCUTTING, CAVING, AND DRAWING A distinguishing characteristic of an undercut-caving method of extraction is the objective that the rock mass fails of its own weight in a predictable and controllable manner, after it is undercut by excavating a tabular¬shaped void, horizontal or inclined. Induced or forced caving refers to procedures that may be resorted to when the ore will not self-cave over the desired span. Block caving, panel caving, and mass caving are terms used to denote the particular sequence of undercutting and ex¬tracting the total area of the ore body on a single min¬ing level. The discussion herein is not specialized to any of these variations; the word block as used does not imply anything as to sequence. CREATING THE UNDERCUT A common undercutting method is to drive a series of drifts and blast the intervening pillars. Theoretical structural analysis and practical experience show that ground-support problems in the undercutting drifts and in underlying access openings as well (the same princi¬ple applies even if undercutting is done by belling out drawpoints from the slusher drifts) are minimized by retreat-mining across the undercut slot according to a sequence such that the growing undercut area retains a

This paper describes the results of field tests conducted on a 5x25m bench face to evaluate several new concepts for improving smooth wall blasting. These ideas involved the use of notched boreholes to direct the fractures and unconventional types and placements of explosives. The notches were made with a mechanical broaching tool, a water jet and with shaped charges. Borehole pressures were measured with an inexpensive and expendable pressure transducer developed for this program. The testing showed that at hole spacings 38% greater than normal practice, notched holes with half the normal loading density produced equivalent results.

ABSTRACT Lateritic bauxite deposits of economic size and grade in Sierra Leone occur on granulites of the Kasila series. The high grade trihydrate ores of Mokanji are exploited by SIEROMCO since 1964. Remaining reserves are small (2 million tons) and operation moved over to the Gondama deposits of similar grade. Port Loko bauxite reserves are estimated at 100 million tons and are of relatively lower grade. It is planned to treat this ore locally into alumina. Guinea's bauxite reserves exceed those of any other nation. They occur as hard lateritic bauxite covers on plateaus of the Pre-Cambrian sedimentary formations and on doleritic intrusions. The genesis is still controversial. The Sangaredi mine has produced high grade ore for the last 10 years. Friguia exploits a relatively lower grade ore at a rate of about 2 million tpy to be treated in their local alumina plant. Kindia ore is mined at a yearly rate of 2,5 million tons since 1974. Untouched reserves at Ayékoyé and Tougué/Dabola are estimated at 6,000 million tons.

"The Ruhr region in Germany’s North-Rhine Westphalia is going through significant change. By the end of 2018, the last two underground hard coal mines in the Ruhr, Ibbenbüren and Prosper-Haniel collieries, will close their portals and bring an end to more than 200 years of coal mining and an industry that was once the economic and cultural backbone of the area. Ruhr is undergoing an impressive economic and cultural transformation, as it gradually shifts from being a region once dependent on coal and steelmaking to a post-mining region focused on redesigning itself as a cultural center. This article focuses on the socioeconomic impacts of the transformation into post-mining and the roles of the government, labor unions and local community to aid the transformation from the perspective of an American student. It will look into the cultural values that are helping to drive the transformation and compare them to American standards and values in order to determine if a similar approach can be used in the United States and its coal industry. History and backgroundUnderground hard coal mining has had a long history and a significant impact on the culture and economy in Ruhr since the early 19th 20century. The Ruhr region is located in the heart of the German state of North- Rhine Westphalia. Ruhr is bounded by the Rhine River in the west, the Ruhr River in the south and the Lippe River in the north, with the Emscher River running through its center.The Ruhr is home to around 5.1 million people and spans an area of approximately 4,500 km2 (1,730 sq miles). Before the era of industrialization, the Ruhr was a rural, agricultural region. Small-scale coal mining began in the 13th century, with coal being used for heating, cooking and metallurgical processes, including steelmaking. With 19th-century industrialization, coal mining became a significant driver of the region’s economic structure. Steam engines, and soon, electric motors, allowed for the pumping of mine water and for powerful hoists hauling from deep shafts, enabling miners to reach deeper coal seams that were once thought impossible to mine. The Ruhr mining boom began in the 1850s, supported by Prussian economic policies that attracted many workers and their families to the region. The population grew from 400,000 in 1850 to 5.7 million in 1957. The coal and steel industries were key contributors to Germany’s “Wirtschaftswunder” — or “miraculous economic recovery”— in the 1950s. In 1956, the coal industry reached its peak production of around 112 Mt/a (124 million stpy) of coal and employed almost 600,000 miners."

Eastern U.S. oil shale contains approximately 10 to 12 gallons of oil per ton and 7 to 10 percent pyritic sulfur. Physical beneficiation of these low grade shales using froth flotation provides a high grade material which will make extraction of oil more economically attractive. The Alabama oil shale used in the present study contained 16.46 percent organic carbon and 14.5 gallons of oil per ton as determined by Fischer assay. Liberation size of the kerogen was estimated at 10 /-Lm. 'Ken-Flote' column flotation technology provided a high grade concentrate containing as much as 60 percent organic carbon, however, carbon recovery was about 60 percent. Carbon recovery was improved to 75-85 percent while maintaining concentrate grades in excess of 40 percent carbon by providing longer retention time in the column which facilitated effective bubble-particle collision and attachment.

Two rare evaporite minerals, nahcolite (NaHC03) and trona (Na2C03?NaHC03?2H20), are both widely used in the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) The largest natural carbonate deposits (trona) are in Wyoming, USA, the second largest deposits are in Turkey, in a lacustrine basin (Beypazari) where nahcolite and trona are located within the Miocene Hirka Formation. The Hirka Formation is mainly composed of bituminous shale, claystone, marlstone, tuffltuffite, and dolomitic limestones. Although numerous trona beds are interbedded within the above mentioned sedimentary units, there are only two beds of trona that are of economic interest. The lower part of the lower trona bed is rich in double carbonates such as pirrsonite (NA2C03? CaC03?2H20) and gaylussite (Na2C03?CaC03?5H20), indicating a change in Ca/Na ratio in the solutions which are responsible for the formation of soda occurrences. In contrast, the upper part of the upper trona bed is rich in nahcolite. This minerological pattern has been found in every drill- hole in the basin. While both trona beds average up to 10 m (33 ft) thick, the average thickness of nahcolite is approximately 0.5 m (1.6 ft). Also, thin section studies show that many fibrous and lath-like trona crystals contain small radial nahcolite crystals; all of them are euhedral and equi-dimensional. Geochemical studies of major, minor, and trace element contents also support this coexistence. Macroscopic and microscopic observations reveal that the nahcolites principally were formed as a result of an incongruent dissolution process of trona. In conclusion, the presence of nahcolite in the Beypazari basin is due to the dissolution process of trona, particularly during the last stage of evaporation, as a result of fresh water entering the basin. During that time, an increase in the HC03/ C03 ratio resulted in nahcolite-trona phase transitions.

There was no need for the people of Cleveland to ask “Where does the raw sewage go? We want to know!” because it was clear. The raw sewage was being discharged into Lake Erie during heavy rainfall events due to the outdated design of the combined sewer system. In efforts to resolve this ongoing issue for the City of Cleveland, the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District developed Project Clean Lake in collaboration with the US EPA. Project Clean Lake is a 25-year, $3 billion program consisting of seven large-diameter CSO storage tunnels to be constructed beneath the city’s existing infrastructure. The first four tunnels have been completed using traditional hard rock TBM excavation methods. The fifth tunnel, the Shoreline Storage Tunnel Project, presents unique challenges and complexities as it will be the first large-diameter EPB TBM to dig under the City of Cleveland. The project itself consists of one tunnel drive 14,100' (2.7 miles) in length, two pipe jacking tunnels, three large slurry wall shafts, two diversion structures, and three regulator reconstructions. Upon completion of the project, 12 permitted CSO locations along Lake Erie will be taken offline, reducing overflow volumes by approximately 350 million gallons per year. This paper will discuss the current status of construction and the chosen means and methods, including the myriad of nuanced differences between hard rock and EPB TBM tunneling methods. Particular attention will be given to the site preparation, setup, and organization; TBM assembly; and TBM launching practices.

Project reflects current realities and challenges of underground excavation, support, and construction under operating subway tracks and platforms, and under major transportation hub, comprising three subway stations, railroad terminal station, and busy street intersection. The construction requires extensive underpinning of subway structures and operating tracks. This Paper addresses engineering challenges of IRT subway station rehabilitation and passageway reconstruction without interruption of transit operations and street traffic. Total construction cost of the Project is $ 105,000,000.

1. INTRODUCTION In April 1979, the U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued the Draft Generic Environmental Impact Statement (GEIS) on Uranium Milling (NUREG-0511) for public comment. While the GEIS is a broad environmental impact assessment of the U.S. uranium milling industry as a whole, its primary focus is on the issue of uranium mill tailings disposal and long term isolation. In August of 1979, proposed regulations (U.S. Federal Register Notice 44FR50012), incorporating both conclusions of the GEIS and provisions of recent U.S. legislation on uranium mill tailings (Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978--UMTRCA), were also issued for public comment. This paper (1) briefly reviews the major conclusions of the draft GEIS, (2) summarizes the major elements and rationale of the associated, proposed regulations, and (3) reviews some of the major issues raised during the public comment period and changes which the NRC staff expects will be made in finalizing the GEIS and regulations. The risk in summarizing a document of such broad scope and complexity as the GEIS is that the depth of evaluation and the full technical bases for conclusions reached may not be adequately conveyed. Recognizing this, those Sections of the draft GEIS where a more complete discussion of the issues is presented are parenthetically noted in this paper in order to facilitate location of additional background and supporting material. 2. GENERAL CONCLUSIONS In the GEIS, a full range of tailings disposal alternatives was considered. These alternatives ranged from the past practice of doing little or nothing to control tailings, to advanced treatment alternatives such as nitric acid leaching to increase removal of radioactive elements and fixation of tailings in cement or asphalt. Our broad conclusions were: -Any alternative which results in the need for ongoing, active maintenance to assure long term containment, is unacceptable. (12.3.2.1) -Advanced treatment alternatives are unwarranted since they offer uncertain incremental benefits yet involve costs which may be as much as an order of magnitude greater than costs associated with acceptable alternatives. "Komatsu has been on the cutting edge of autonomous mining for the past 30 years and the company remains at the forefront of the technology that is changing from concept to a full-fledged reality.In 1996, Komatsu America Corp. (KAC) purchased a controlling interest in Modular Mining Systems; a move that enabled both companies to expand their product lines. It was through this effort that Modular helped to deploy the first autonomous haulage system (AHS) — the Komatsu FrontRunner system. In January 2008, the first commercial implementation of the FrontRunner system occurred at Codelco’s copper mine in Chile. Since then, Komatsu has put more than 130 haul trucks into seven sites on three continents to haul copper, iron ore and oil sands and its equipment has moved 1.8 Gt (2 billion st) of material with zero lost time incidents attributed to Komatsu’s autonomous trucks. The 1.8 Gt (2 billion st) is the most of any commercial mining autonomous haulage system and there is more to come. In November, Komatsu announced that an additional 150 autonomous haul trucks will be deployed to the Canadian oil sands over the next seven years.Komatsu has continued to pioneer autonomous haulage development, creating a range of autonomous options that includes semiautonomous and teleremote options all the way up to a haulage vehicle that stole the show at the world’s largest mining equipment trade show.In 2016, Komatsu advanced the concept of driverless haul truck to a new level when it displayed its Innovative Autonomous Haulage Vehicle (IAHV) at MINExpo in Las Vegas, NV. The concept vehicle is the first mega class haul truck designed to be fully autonomous, without an operators’ cab included on the vehicle.Unlike other haul trucks, the vehicle was developed exclusively as an unmanned vehicle designed to maximize the advantages of unmanned operation. Among other advancements, it was designed to distribute equal load to the four wheels, both when the vehicle is loaded and unloaded, and adopt four-wheel drive, retarder and steering. Komatsu said it is aiming for high-performance shuttling of this vehicle in both forward and reverse travel directions, thereby eliminating the need for K-turns at loading and unloading sites."
