Corrosion and abrasion properties of a series of chromium-containing, cast-iron balls, with Cr contents ranging from 0% to 29%, were evaluated and compared with austenitic stainless-steel and mild-steel balls. Marked ball wear tests were performed on artificial ore samples consisting of 95% quartzite, with either 5% pyrrhotite or 5% chalcopyrite, under a nitrogen or oxygen atmosphere. The electrochemical mechanism was investigated by correlating the corrosive wear with the corrosion currents obtained from potentiodynantic polarization curves under abrasion. Flotation recoveries were determined on a 95% quartzite + 5% pyrrhotite sample ground with various cast-iron ball materials under an oxygen or nitrogen atmosphere. Electrochemical results are found to be in good agreement with flotation results and with corrosive wear data obtained from marked ball wear tests.

Mining at Newmont Mining?s Phoenix?s Mine is currently done by surface operation in the Fortitude and Bonanza pits at a combined rate of approximately 100 kt/d (110,000 stpd). A portion of the orebodies targeted by these pits was mined previously by underground mining methods, dating back to the mid-to late-1800s. Most of the underground workings (voids) are located in the west central area of the Bonanza pit. The surface operation requires excavation through voids, and there is a risk of pit floor subsidence that has to be addressed. This article presents a review of the risk mitigation measures that were implemented to reduce risks to people and equipment working in the area.

Metallurgical balances are fundamental to the successful design and operation of concentration and dewatering circuits. With computerized balance techniques gaining prominence in recent years, it is essential that engineers understand the basic principles that underlie the new methods, as well as the various applications for design of new plants and analysis of existing operations. This chapter discusses two important types of metallurgical balance: (1) steady-state design (2) operating data adjustment Application of computerized steady- state design balancing is demonstrated through the example of a typical copper concentrator flowsheet. Operating data adjustment to achieve a consistent balance is demonstrated for a typical concentrator operation.

The establishment and survival of different grass species and cultivars on various phytotechnic treatments at a limestone quarry was studied. The treatments applied were: a) bare soil, b) bentonite, c) bentonite-straw and d) asphalt-straw. According to the results, significant differences were found among species and cultivars, growing on different treatments as far as plant growth and survival are concerned. The seed germination was higher on bentonite -straw and asphaltic-straw than on bentonite but the plants survival were higher on bentonite. Lolium perenne had higher seed germination rate and better establishment than the other tested species at all treatments. However, the survival rate of Agropyron desertorum and of the cultivars palestina and chrysopigi of Dactylis glomerata was higher than of the other species.

Asamera Minerals Cannan Mine has been producing a 170 g gold/tonne (5 oz gold/ton) siliciaus flotation concentrate since July 1985. Flotation concentrate is shipped to a smelter for gold recovery. Numerous processes have been investigated to economically produce bullion on site. This paper describes the laboratory and pilot plant test results of a bacterial assisted oxidation of the refractory minerals. Economic comparisons with autoclaving and roasting processes are included.

Computer control has been one of the fastest moving and most glamorous fields of industrial development in the past decade. A review of this period shows some truly remarkable accomplishments in both system development and applications. In addition, work now under way promises results which will continue the rate of progress of the past. This paper will review the history and status of the field of computer control and point out the major breakthroughs which have occurred. It will analyze the present trends and extrapolate them to predict the early future developments in the field.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained. Experimental equipment and procedure The arrangement of the column cell and auxiliary equipment for continuous flow testing is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The feed sump [O] is filled with a sufficient volume of prepared sample to permit a large number of tests to be performed (typically 12). Past experience has shown this is necessary to control sample variability and variability in the size distribution resulting from ultra fine grinding. The feed slurry is maintained at about 20% solids and is constantly recirculated and stirred. The sample is metered from the circulating pipe by a peristaltic pump [O]. The feed slurry is diluted with reagentized water [O] by a second peristaltic pump [O]. Wash water [O], also reagentized, is supplied through a third peristaltic pump [O]. While this feed system may seem unduly complex, it does permit users to independently vary either the wash water rate or the net solids content of the cell. In the tests reported here, the feed rate and net percent solids were constant at 12.5 gms/min. and 3.3%, respectively. Diluted feed enters the column through 6.35 mm-diam (0.25 in.-diam) copper tubing and is discharged upwardly at the center of the column. Tailings are discharged through flexible tubing that can be adjusted so as to control the position of the pulp-froth interface. The column is 76.2 mm-internal-diam (3 in.-internal-diam) and 1090 mm (43 in.) high. It is made from lucite tubing and is fitted with a 51-mm-diam (2-in.-diam) fritted glass air sparger having an average pore diameter of 50 µm. In performing a series of tests, the concentrate and tailing are allowed to discharge continuously. The system is allowed to equilibrate for 30 minutes after the pulp and froth reach operating levels. Concentrate and tailing samples are taken simultaneously for timed intervals (five to 15 minutes, depending on the volume of sample desired). After sampling, a change in operating conditions is made and the system is again allowed to equilibrate. The tests to determine the effect of the pulp-froth interface level were part of a larger series of tests in which the objective was to optimize the conditions for a rougher flotation stage in a two stage circuit. The sample used in this series of tests was an Alabama shale ground to d90 = 23.1 µm and d50 = 7.9 µm. The operating conditions remaining constant in this series of tests were as follows: Column height - 1600 mm (63 in.) Air sparser - 50 µm (average pore diameter) Spray water - 130 cc/min. Feed rate - 12.5 gm/min (0.4 oz per min) (dry solids) Percent solids - 3.3% Frother (Dowfroth 250) - 45 ppm The variable test conditions are tabulated in Table 1. INTRODUCTION This submission was made to the Royal Commission of Inquiry into uranium mining in British Columbia. It discusses the stability of waste rock piles that might be developed in conjunction with uranium mining and the control of leachates that might be generated within these waste rock piles over the short and the long term. Short term refers to the interval during which a waste rock pile undergoes either continuous, or alternatively intermittent development, and in general can be considered to extend over the operating life of the mine. Long term refers to the postmining period, i.e. after the ore-body has been exhausted, and mining operations have ceased. Two major classes of waste material are generated in the course of mining and milling operations. Tails, which are the solid waste materials produced by the milling operations commonly exit the mill in slurry form and are stored in tailing retention ponds. Management and control of these slurried wastes are the subject of other papers to the Commission and this conference. In the course of the mining operations, it may be necessary to remove rock materials that are below cut-off grade. That is, ore concentrations within some of the mined rock may be lower than the concentrations which on the basis of economic considerations justifies milling the material. Rock which is removed in the course of the mining operations, but which is below cut-off grade is referred to as waste rock. This waste rock is commonly consigned to a specific area for disposal where it is placed in a mound or pile, i.e. a waste rock pile. Ore concentrations within the waste rock may vary from zero to just below cut-off grade. Since an increase in the market value of uranium could at some time in future result in reduction of the cut-off grade, it follows that waste rock containing ore concentrations slightly below today's cut-off grade could become ore grade rock at some time in future. For this reason, the mine operators may deem it advisable to separate waste rock according to grade, and to consign the waste rock to two or more individual waste rock piles. For purposes of clarity and simplicity, this submission treats the stability of waste rock piles and leachate control in a manner which assumes that these potential problems are isolated and separate from other aspects of the mining and milling operations. For many site specific cases, the problem of potential leachate control might be integrated with the tailings management aspect of the project, thereby realizing economic benefits while at the same time reducing the potential for adverse environmental impact.

The Regional Connector Transit Corridor (RCTC) Project is a 1.9-mile-long metro light-rail extension project that traverses the historical core of downtown Los Angeles, California. This project aims to improve mobility throughout downtown LA with fewer transfers for riders. It is designed to connect two existing rail lines for a more seamless travel. The project consists of twin bore tunnels, three new stations, and is scheduled to be completed in 2022. The design-build contract was awarded to the Regional Connector Constructors (RCC) in 2014, a joint venture of Skanska and Traylor Bros, Inc. with Hatch Mott MacDonald as the designer. One of the challenging aspects of the project was the construction of a crossover cavern in a narrow public right-of-way surrounded by historical structures. RCC used Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) to construct the crossover cavern measuring 287 ft long by 58 ft wide by 36 ft tall. The initial lining of the cavern featured a 12 in. fiber reinforced shotcrete lining. The initial lining was separated from the final lining by a hydrocarbon resistant membrane, as specified by the standard requirements of Metro. The cavern features a cast-in-place final lining with a thickness of 5 ft 9 inches in the invert and 18 inches in the crown and walls. The structure also features a nonload bearing plenum slab and interior walls for ventilation.

Your committee doesn't assign any easy topics to us speakers. How do you define "successful" in what is essentially a losing game? I am reminded of the fellow who returned from a one-week vacation in Las Vegas, and proudly stated, "I only lost $150." To him, that was "success." I am afraid that workers' compensation is a losing game for employers, too, and success has to be defined in terms of how much or how little is lost. We have no chance of producing a profit for our employer. We will narrow down to some suggestions about conducting a workers' compensation program at the plant level, but first I want to discuss the general legal, social and legislative climate in which your plant program operates. Workers' compensation is a statutory program with its general parameters established by the legislature. These parameters are then amplified by the boards and commissions established to administer workers' compensation. What influences the legislature and the boards and commissions as they establish the framework in which we must function?

A concentrate biooxidation process was successfully demon­strated in the field in a remote part of northwestern Mexico. A 275 tonne (300 st) biooxidation heap was constructed using GeoBiotics' proprietary GEOCOAT™ coated concentrate process. The pyrite/chalcopyrite/sphalerite concentrate was bioox­idized in the heap for 60 days. Cyanide leach recovery of the con­centrate increased from 68% gold recovery at a cyanide consump­tion of 1.6 kg NaCN/g Au (llO lbs/oz) in the as-received concen­trate, to 94% gold recovery at a cyanide consumption of 0.37 kg NaCN/g Au (27 lbs/oz) in the biooxidized concentrate. The heap was constructed at a rate of7 tonnes (7.5 st) concentrate per hour, using typical heap leach equipment and easily scalable methods. Heap operations demonstrated that energy dissipation in the humid summer environment was easily controlled by low pressure aeration and management of solution chemistry and application. Observations of the demonstration heap appear to support the presence of reflux of moisture within the biooxidation heap.

A residential metals abatement program has been underway in Butte for more than 20 years. More than 1,350 yard and attic cleanups were completed by the end of 2018; most triggered by lead. While the focus is on remediation of residential soil and house dust, the program also includes a blood lead monitoring program with identification and abatement of additional sources of exposure for children with elevated blood lead levels (BLLs). As specified in the remediation program, studies are being conducted every 5 years to assess BLL data collected from Butte children. The first two studies have evaluated over 6,000 BLLs from 2003 through 2017 and evaluated trends over this time period, by Butte neighborhood, and as compared to areas outside of Butte. These studies showed that rates of elevated BLLs (i.e., those above 5 µg/dL) in Butte children have declined dramatically since 2002 but have been declining much more slowly since 2011. Improved rates of confirmation testing are needed to verify the rates of elevated BLLs. While the RMAP likely has contributed to these declines in BLLs the magnitude of impact cannot be quantified.

The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) delivers water to the San Francisco Bay Area through an aqueduct system extending from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the East Bay. This aqueduct system, the Mokelumne Aqueducts, are comprised of three 82-mile long steel pipelines. The portion of the aqueducts crossing the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta is recognized to be vulnerable to seismic and flooding hazards. Previous studies evaluated alternatives for mitigating these hazards and increasing the reliability of the aqueducts for the next 100 years. The preferred solution involves construction of a 16.5-mile tunnel across the Delta and re-routing the existing aqueducts through this tunnel

Exploration for mineral deposits in the western United States is increasing annually, and the data generated by this effort are increasingly complex, diverse, and abundant. It is obvious that to make full use of this data base, which is both private and public, the technology of the computer must be involved. To lay out the framework for discussion of the particular uses of computers in all steps of exploration, this chapter will discuss the various approaches to the reconnaissance program which might be considered, the types of data to be acquired, the interpretation of these data, and the generation of recommendations based on this interpretation. Where possible, some of those areas where computer technology is now used will be pointed out. The discussion will cover the extent to which the computer is now utilized in those areas or where it should be brought into the program to aid in these activities. However, this chapter will not present an exhaustive evaluation of this technology, but will stress the exploration job and its requirements, so that subsequent discussion of the technology itself can be placed in perspective.

The Cities Service Company's Pinto Valley mine and concentrator lie about 6 miles west of the town of Miami, Arizona at an elevation of approximately 4,000 feet above sea level. The concentrator started its first ballmill in July 74 and all six were available by November. Every effort was made to reduce capital costs, consequently, each unit process was studied critically to eliminate excess capital costs without loss of efficiency. Equipment selection was made on the basis of proven dependability and operating costs rather than on low bids. The result is a very workable plant with some important innovations. The concentrator is nominally 40,000 tons per day. The flowsheet is typical with 3 stage crushing, single stage closed circuit grinding, flotation, regrinding of rougher concentrate and cleaning of the rougher concentrate. INTRODUCTION This manuscript is based on site inspections of five existing mines and the detailed analysis of two of the five. The detailed analysis and mathematical models of the two mines are presented herein in order to demonstrate a method of predicting mine water inflow using existing mines as a data base. Water management procedures were studied at all mines. Our original criteria for mine selection were that the mines be less than five years old and have an inflow rate in excess of 2000 gpm (7.6 m3/min). Background hydrologic and hydrogeologic data were required so that two of the mines could be used for our computer modeling experiments. Our original criteria proved to be difficult to meet. We contacted numerous mines via various sources. Many mines were unable to meet the cri¬teria stated or were not interested in cooperating with us. Therefore, we allowed some flexibility in the application of these criteria to satisfy our orig¬inal requirements. Although the visitations at all the mines are not discussed herein the characteristics of the two mines simulated are presented. These simulated mines consist of a uranium mine in New Mexico and a lead mine in Missouri. The mines and owners will remain anonymous by request. URANIUM MINE-CASE HISTORY NUMBER 1 Mine Location The uranium mine that we simulated is located in northwestern New Mexico. The ground surface at the uranium mine is at an elevation of approx¬imately 7000 ft (2134 m) above mean sea level. The climate is arid to semi-arid with an average annual precipitation of approximately 10 in. (25.4 cm) (John and West, 1963). Geologic Setting It is essential that a conceptual model of the stratigraphy, hydrostratigraphy, and structural geology of a mine site be developed prior to simulation by a mathematical model. If such a conceptual model is not developed prior to simulation major errors are difficult to avoid. The uranium mine we have simulated is located in the San Juan Basin (Fig. 68), which is a structural basin located in northwestern New Mexico and adjacent parts of Colorado, Arizona, and Utah. The sedimentary rocks present in the deepest part of the basin are nearly 15,000 ft (4572 m) thick (John and West, 1963). The regional dip of the sedimen¬tary rocks in the Grants area is generally northward toward the San Juan Basin; the regional attitude is modified locally by normal faults and folds (Hilbert, 1963). The rocks of interest in this area are sedimentary in origin and range in age from Penn¬sylvanian to Cretaceous. They rest on the Precam¬brian core of the Zuni Uplift. Associated intrusive and extrusive rocks are of Tertiary and Quaternary ages (Hilbert, 1963). The deepest sedimentary unit of interest at this mine site is the Morrison Formation as described by Hilbert (1963). The Morrison Formation con¬sists of three members in the general area of the mine site; the deepest member is the Recapture. The Recapture Member consists of alternating beds of gray sandstone and grayish red siltstone or mud¬stone with strata up to several feet in thickness. Only a few small deposits of uranium are contained within the Recapture Member. The Westwater Canyon Member overlies the Recapture Member of the Morrison Formation. The Westwater Can¬yon Member is approximately 150 ft (46 m) thick and consists of light brown to gray, poorly sorted, arkosic sandstone, and some interbedded gray mud¬stone. The Poison Canyon Formation denoted in subsequent discussions, tables, and figures was de¬termined to be a part of the Westwater Canyon Member. The separate connotation is used for the description of mining operations and hydraulic properties but a separate physical description is not included. Mining is a very important economical activity in Peru which has been recently developed without considering environmental aspects. Here, we show an experience at the Milpo mine, situated 4,200 meters above sea level; a mining company that has the value of being one of few from the last decade that is engaged in consolidating a model of environmental protection. The model includes aspects of contamination prevention and control, with bioindicators such as pasture cultivation, vegetables, forests, and hydrobiological species breeding. Socially, through means of development programs in natural areas, forestation and support to rural agriculture, together with environmental education, it is being demonstrated that it is possible to ensure tangible results in environmental conservation and the well-being of the populations around the mine.

Porphyry type copper ± molybdenum deposits typically occur in the Phanerozoic rocks and have been well documented. During the past two decades a number of porphyry type Cu ± Mo deposits which range in age from 1055 ± 35 Ma to 2970 Ma have been identified in the Precambrian rocks of Australia, Canada, China, Finland, India, Namibia and Zambia. Kalanjkhand porphyry copper deposit M. P., India which is estimated to contain 789 million tonnes averaging 0. 83 percent Cu (millhead-grade); 0.004 percent Mo; 0.2 gm/t Au; 6 gm/t Ag and a cap of 7.532 million tonnes of oxide are averaging 0.8 percent Cu. The economic potential of the expanded copper mining milling, smelting and refining complex to be built in the future at Kalanjkhand, which is the largest porphyry copper deposit discovered to date in the Precambrian rocks of the world is presented.

"The adsorption of collector on chalcocite has been studied in situ in aqueous solutions by applying an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images show that xanthate, such as potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), adsorbs strongly on chalcocite mainly in the form of insoluble metal xanthate, which binds strongly with the mineral surface without being removed by flushing with ethanol alcohol. The result clearly shows that the adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite is totally different from its adsorption on chalcopyrite, during which oily dixanthogen is the main adsorption product on chalcopyrite surface. AFM images also showed that increasing solution pH to 10 doesn’t prevent the adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite much and the result confirms with the fact that chalcocite floats well in a wide pH range up to 12 with xanthate being used as a collector. INTRODUCTION In flotation, the adsorption of collector on mineral surface is vital for a successful flotation process to achieve a satisfying metal recovery. Historically, many works have been carried out to clarify the adsorption mechanism of collectors on sulfides. (Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936, Poling and Leja, 1963; Allison et al., 1972, Fuerstenau, 1982; Leja, 1982; Woods, 1984) The adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite surface in aqueous solution also attracted the interest of many researches. Gaudin and his colleagues (Gaudin et al., 1934; Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936) studied the solubility of potassium ethyl xanthate and its reaction products in organic solvents and firstly proposed there was initially chemisorbed xanthate (X-) on chalcocite surface followed by insoluble cuprous xanthate (CuX). Allison et al. (1972) studied the reaction products of various sulfide minerals with xanthate solutions and reported that the measured rest potential of chalcocite in 6.25×10-4 M KEX solution at pH 7 was +60 mV and the reaction product of PAX on chalcocite was cuprous xanthate. Mielczarski and Suoninen (1984a, 1984b) applied the XPS and studied the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on cuprous sulfide. It was reported that there was a relatively rapid formation of a well-oriented monolayer of xanthate ions followed by a slow growth of disordered cuprous xanthate molecules on top of this layer. Richardson et al. (1984) carried out an electrochemical study of chalcocite flotation with the addition of ethyl xanthate. It was proposed that cuprous xanthate and possibly cupric xanthate were adsorbed hydrophobic species on chalcocite surface due to the exchange and charge transfer oxidation reactions. Leppinen et al. (1989) applied an in-situ FTIR study of ethyl xanthate adsorption on sulfide minerals under conditions of controlled potential and they concluded that, for chalcocite, there were three different potential regions of xanthate adsorption, including chemisorption, copper ethyl xanthate formation on the surface and multilayer formation."
