The objective of the experiment was to investigate the efficiency of hindered-settling column in recovering carbon from anthracite. Two types of Korean anthracites were prepared for feed materials. Each sample was crushed and classified by size, and washability analyses were performed. Separation efficiency was evaluated under various operating conditions using a laboratory scale hindered settling column. Results showed that the carbon recovery was higher for the smaller sizes, but the purity of the product was better for the larger sizes. In, overall, 2-0.21mm particles of 40-45 % ash could be processed into about 20 % ash products.

Mine production crews and drill-and-blast crews may be exposed to unexpected movement of ground when working under pit slopes. Without specialist geotechnical advice and appropriate measurement systems, mine crews are faced with conducting risk assessments and relying on subsequent controls that may or may not be adequate to ensure their safety. Mine crews need an ?early warning? monitoring system to give them the confidence that they will have time to walk out of the danger zone if the pit slope begins to move. Slope stability radar technology is used by mine geotechnical engineers to assess overall slope stability over an extended period, typically days or weeks, and to critically monitor slopes that are actively moving and may become unsafe. The complexity of slope stability radar allows for geotechnical engineers to assess movement types and movement rates across multiple work areas of a mine from long ranges, with alarm capability to a central location. However there are many mine work areas where production and drill-and blast crews are not adequately covered or alarmed by slope stability radar systems. What is required is an easy-to-use, short-range, fast-scanning tool that can be operated directly by a work crew and can provide a local alarm with sufficient warning when a wall movement occurs within the work area. The Work Area Monitor (WAM) concept has been developed specifically to be operated by a mine production crew. The system comprises a sensitive, fast-scanning radar coupled with a high-resolution camera, built into a mine-standard light vehicle. The system has been designed specifically for ease of use with the output being a local area alarm to warn workers of slope movement in their vicinity, as opposed to the broader pit monitoring and long-term deformation measurements of the known slope stability radar systems.

Introduction Pegasus Gold's Montana Tunnels mine is a large surface gold, silver, lead, and zinc mine located 37 km (23 miles) south of Helena in southwestern Montana. Milling operations commenced in late March 1987. The concentrator achieved full production in May that year after undergo¬ing several modifications and improvements. Production for 1988 is projected to be 2.48 t ,80,000 oz) of gold, 34.2 t (1.1 million oz) of silver, along with 8.5 kt (9400 st) of lead, and 22.6 kt (25,000 st) of zinc from lead and zinc concentrates. Mill throughput currently averages 11.7 kt/d (12,900 stpd), compared to the origi¬nally designed capacity of 11.3 kt/d (12,500 stpd). Cash production costs, net of bypro¬duct revenues for the third quarter 1988, were below $3.20/g ($100 per oz). The introduction of ore to the concen¬trator marked the culmination of 12 years ex¬ploration, evaluation, and development. Initial milling operations encountered diffi¬culties with the circuit as designed. As a result, several modifications and improve¬ments were made to the plant. This article is intended to assist other companies developing projects of this type and complexity. It discusses the mine's de¬velopment from feasibility and construction through start-up. The operation, as it exists today, is reviewed including the modifica¬tions and improvements made since start-up. History The mine is situated in Jefferson County, MT within the historic Corbin-Wickes min¬ing district. Underground mining began in 1864 and flourished until the early 1900s. Between 1864 and 1900 the vein deposits in the district produced about $41 million dol¬lars worth of lead and silver ores containing subordinate amounts of zinc, copper, and gold. At various times, three smelters were operated in the area.

A test to determine the amount of gravity recoverable gold (GRG) in an ore is described. Typical GRG results are given; an error analysis is detailed; possible uses are discussed. Of the 38 samples tested, the lowest GRG content was found to be 25% (most below 25 11m, or 600 mesh), and the highest 94% (most above 300 11m, or 50 mesh). The average GRG content was 63%, with a standard deviation of 19%. Error analysis shows the test to be reproducible within 5 to 10%, depending on the size distribution and grade of GRG, and the sample extraction protocol. When using the same primary sample, reproducibility improves, 2 to 5%, depending on the amount of gold coarser than 850 11m (20 mesh) and sample weight. The test has been applied to greenfield project and retrofit applications, to determine the suitability of gravity recovery. For existing circuits, it has been coupled with a model of gravity recovery for optimization studies.

The reduced need for traditionally trained and educated personnel in the mining industry is systemic to the changing mining industry. Our universities and other training institutions are doing just fine meeting the traditional skill needs required by the industry. But are the skill needs going to be the same in the near future? The answer may be NO!! Mining is changing: increased liabilities and costs of environmental and safety issues; lower grades of minerals in traditional mining activities; the advent of new bio-chemical processes and robotic equipment as more productive and economic alternatives; and, larger more sophisticated and automatic equipment. Engineering is more specific, accurate, precise and expensive. Measurement is more thorough and timely of progress, production, costs, and productivity. And we will be engaging in more undersea mining, possibly space bases processing, less human interaction, and more remote control of events than was ever thought possible in the past. This paper presents several of the systemic changes that are presently and will continue to change the face of mining. It will identify area where education and management will have to address these changes.

In the paper presented by F.W. Brackebusch on the "Basics of paste backfill systems," paste fill was presented as a backfill process that offers many advantages over other alternatives such as hydraulic fill and rock fill. It was observed, however, that the mechanics of paste-fill transportation in pipelines is not fully understood and that the success of its implementation in practice depends on the precise control of the proportions of fines, aggregates and water in the mixture. The author emphasized the necessity for laboratory and full-scale testing to determine the suitability of a material to be used as paste fill. Although experimental testing is definitely an important operation in the design of a reliable paste fill, advances in the understanding of the fundamental laws that govern paste flow in pipelines are equally relevant. Ideally, the results of such efforts would provide predictive models for the rheology of the paste and the corresponding pumping-energy requirements. In an attempt to achieve this objective, an ongoing research program has been active at McGill University's Department of Mining and Metallurgical Engineering. Preliminary results showed that the underlying mechanics of paste-fill flow in pipelines may be described in terms of what is known as "plug flow," as depicted in Fig. 1. Although this flow mechanism has been known qualitatively for many years, few attempts managed to offer a comprehensive model (Gandhi, 1987; Duckworth, 1986). In our model, it is assumed that coarse aggregates present in the mixture form a porous core, which is filled with paste (fines and water) and is surrounded by an annular non-Newtonian (Bingham-plastic) lubrication layer, which enables the mixture to flow with pressure losses that are easily overcome by common positive-displacement pumps. In summary, our model predicts the thickness of the annular lubricating layer, which controls the magnitude of the pressure losses. This is done either by collecting data on the apparent viscosity of the Theologically-active fine fraction and using an analytical equation (Bouzaiene, 1994), or is done by measuring the void content of the coarse aggregates and deducing the thickness as a function of the fine- to coarse (weight or volume) fraction ratio in the mixture for a given pipe diameter and solids concentration. Our model predictions showed good agreement with data from Duckworth et al. (1986), as shown in Fig. 2.? The Marlin gold-silver deposit is in western Guatemala, 15 kilometers south of a major transform fault that separates the North American and Caribbean plates. A district-scale, northwest-trending graben controlled deposition of a greater than 1200 meter thick upper Tertiary quartz latite to rhyolite volcaniclastic sequence. These volcanics were subsequently intruded and unconformably overlain by a small intermediate, latite to andesite, volcanic complex. Classic low-sulfidation, quartz-calcite-adularia veins and stockwork formed a 2.2 million ounce gold deposit, in association with late-stage andesite dike swarms, along a west-northwest striking normal fault on the eastern flank of the volcanic complex.

Using electrochemical techniques it was demonstrated that bioleaching of gold from refractory pyritic ores is a complex phenomenon. Many intermediate electrochemical reactions were found to be involved in the oxidation of pyrite, using cyclic voltammetry and carbon paste-pyrite containing electrode. Furthermore, the oxidation process was controlled by solid-state diffusion as suggested by chronoamperometric and chronopotentiometric measurements. Using the Sand's approach, the activation energy of solid-state diffusion was found to be = 22.4 kJ. After bioleaching, 96% gold was extracted from the leach resi¬due with a thiourea solution in 1 hour. A generalized model for the mechanism of pyrite oxidation has been presented.

This paper presents the construction of the ventilation shaft for the single-tube, doublelane Kramer tunnel. The project is located in the Federal State of Bavaria, Germany. This road tunnel, which has been under construction since December 2019, is the key component of the western bypass of the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Once completed, it will relieve the town’s central district from enormous volumes of traffic. The contractor is the joint venture named ARGE Kramertunnel consisting of BeMo Tunnelling and Subterra. The whole project will be completed and handed over to the project owner, Staatliches Bauamt Weilheim, in 2023. The opening of the entire bypass section including the tunnel to traffic is planned for 2024. The tunnel, with a total length of 3,609 m (2.24 miles) and an estimated cost of EUR 178 million incl. VAT (US-Dollar 201 million), is designed as a single-tube, double-lane structure with one traffic lane for each direction of travel. The safety issue that exists for singletube tunnels is solved by a parallel escape tunnel passable for vehicles. For tunnel ventilation, an intermediate shaft has been designed with a depth of approximately 90 m (295 feet) and an inner diameter of 4.5 m (14.8 feet). All tunnels and ducts are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). The geological and hydrogeological conditions, the change in the profile (from round to square geometry), and also the shaft being located at a high elevation presented a demanding technical and logistical challenge. The site arrangement with the pit bank was located in a cut, the slopes of which had to be stabilized with shotcrete and soil nails. This excavation was carried out from the fall of 2020 to the beginning of 2021 because construction operations had to be completed outside the nesting period of protected birds.

R.C. Rex, Jr. V. Rajaram's paper does not accurately reflect the status of Eastern oil shale development as it stands today. Today, there are numerous firms and research organizations pursuing development of the Eastern oil shale resource. Details of the current projects can be found in the symposium proceedings for the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium held in Lexington, KY, in November 1985. Additionally, the comparison of the Paraho and HYTORT processes is invalid because the HYTORT process design used it not an accurate representation of the HYTORT process. I will briefly address this point. It is disconcerting to see the author reference hydroretorting work conducted at the Institute of Gas Technology (IGT) (circa 1978) in the introduction, which indicates hydroretorting (the HYTORT process concept) yields of up to 250% of the Fischer Assay oil yield, and then turn around and base the remainder of the paper on the 1981 "Synthetic Fuels From Eastern Oil Shale Report," which depicts the HYTORT process as yielding only 115% of Fischer Assay. Indeed, work conducted at IGT to 1981 indicates commercial oil yields for the HYTORT process would be in the range of 200% to 210% of Fischer Assay. A more thorough literature search by the author would have yielded a 1981 publication by Schora et al., entitled "Update on the HYTORT Process" presented at the Symposium on Synthetic Fuels From Oil Shale in Nashville, TN, October 1981. This paper thoroughly discusses the shortcomings of the referenced study with respect to the HYTORT process. For the interested reader, I can also recommend a June 1984 report entitled "An Economic Comparison of Five Process Concepts for Using Eastern Oil Shale," published by Los Alomos National Laboratory (LA-10106-MS, Parkinson et al., NTIS No. DE84-015981). This study applies a realistic HYTORT design (circa 1982) and indicates that HYTORT is the most econom¬ical method of processing Eastern oil shales (about $20/bbl less than Paraho). Additionally, completion of the HYTORT feasibility study in June 1983 by Phillips Petroleum Co., Bechtel Group Inc., HYCRUDE Corp., and IGT has resulted in development of designs that will make the use of HYTORT on Eastern oil shales even more economic. HYCRUDE Corp., a second-tier subsidiary of IGT, is involved in commercialization and licensing of the HYTORT process and is active in efforts to develop the Eastern oil shale resource. As such, I am disappointed to see outdated material that has the potential for adversely affecting development of Eastern oil shale resources published in MINING ENGINEERING. I can only hope that this response will serve to mitigate any negative opinions that may have been formed. Today, activity in commercializing Eastern oil shales dominates the oil shale scene in the US and indicates a realization of the potential for these shales. Reply by V. Rex, Jr. I hope that Hycrude's work will lead to the funding of a pilot plant to demonstrate that yields of greater than 200% of Fischer Assay can be achieved in a commercial plant using eastern US oil shales.

Most accidents are the result of risk taking. They can happen anywhere. Our coal industry categorizes accidents by type, occupation, commodity, age, every way you can imagine. We now know, how many were injured and when, for all the different types of accidents. We have ask ourselves many times, why are we having accidents, how can we stop the accidents and fatals in our industry? Present numbers and projections do not show that this will happen. Serious accidents can result in fatalities. Fatal accident can be prevented, and the coal industry can achieve zero fatalities. How soon this happens, depends on a great number of factors. I will discuss accidents and reasons for us having accidents in an attempt to get to the root causes. The historical perspective will be touched on, and the risk and analysis of accidents will be probed.

INTRODUCTION The application of micro-computers to the evaluation of an advanced exploration project is illustrated by reference to a large project in the Sudbury Basin region of Canada. The deposit in question is polymetalic (Cu, Pb, Zn, Au, Ag) with a strike length of 3048m (10000ft) and has been explored to a depth of 457m (1500ft) by approximately 1350 diamond drillhole of between 9 - 305m (30-1000ft) in length. The large amount of data involved and the ability to rapidly recalculate geological reserves in response to fluctuating metal prices were key factors in the application of a micro-computer based evaluation system. The evaluation software was implemented at two levels, with data capture implemented mainly on - an entry level workstation comprising an IBM-PC compatible (PC-XT) micro-computer equipped with a 20Mb hard disc, printer and RS-232 serial communication facilities. Data analysis, display, geo- logical modelling and processing was carried out on a high-level workstation based on a Hewlett-Packard 9000 super- micro computer and peripherals, including a 40Mb hard disc, tablet digitizer and plotter. Basic drillhole data was entered either directly at the super- micro or transferred from the PC via the RS-232 link. The evaluation process proceeds once the data is edited and in a "clean" format within a master project database. The software is comprised of a suite of modular, integrated programs based on ease of use, interactive graphics and optimized for the computer workstation. Drillhole data was displayed and plotted as hard copy plots on which geological interpretations were developed. The data was copied into small manageable projects consisting of 100 to 150 drillholes, within which a sectional model was created such that all the models are interconnected along the entire strike with no overlaps. Geological reserves were derived by developing a set of function variables, including Net Smelter Return, within the database. The values of these functions can be displayed on the model sections and "ore” zones defined in accordance with pre-determined cutoff values. Interpolation of the modelled data was then carried out and geological reserves calculated and reported. DATA CAPTURE Drillhole data for the project consisted mainly of existing drillhole logs, although the system allows for the entry of new information as it becomes available. The structure and format (i.e. number and length of variable fields) is user defined. The log for this project comprises an abbreviated section for name, competency, grain size, texture, colour and alteration. Fields are defined for structural information regarding bedding and fault angles and up to seven mineral identification columns and percentages are available. Assay information consisting of the sample number, width and six determinations (Cu%, Pb%, Zn%, Fe%, Au opt., Ag opt.) along with a comments section of 25 characters completes the log. One powerful feature of the data- base is the ability to set up function variables that are mathematical and/or logical combinations of the project variables, enabling the user to develop economic variables such as Net Smelter Return. These functions include current treatment costs, deductions and penalties and can be rapidly recalculated within the database to accommodate changes in metal prices, forecast recoveries and exchange rates (Table 1).

Within the investigation works for the Copenhagen Cityring metro, Geo/CMT have carried out 90 geotechnical boreholes. Together with the previously available investigation, this resulted in more than 15 km of vertical drillings and several thousands of laboratory tests. The design is made for 17 stations, four shafts and two parallel 16 km long tunnels. The geotechnical investigation and design have been carried out in several stages comprising appropriate refinement of structural design and design of excavation operations, including TBM break-in and launching operations at each station shaft. Acceptance of the solution and / or refinement of the investigation and design schedule in the next stage were based on the geological conditions, area availability at surface level, planning and cost-control criteria. The applied recursive design refinement is presented herein with an example of the Østersøgade shaft location.

Ore reserves in the Republic mining district were nearly exhausted in 1984 when hole D-54 intersected a vein twenty- eight feet in drill width averaging 1.57 opt gold and 11.95 opt silver below post-mineral lake beds. The discovery area, termed "Golden Promise", has announced proven and probable ore reserves of approximately 372,000 tons averaging 1.0 opt gold and 4.5 opt silver, and drilling indicates another 756,000 tons of mineralized material containing 0.37 opt gold and 1.4 opt silver (Hecla fourth quarter 1986 report). This paper describes new geological interpretations made as part of a district research study sponsored by Hecla Mining Co., which led to the D-54 discovery. Important new geological concepts include: 1) re-interpretation of the volcanic stratigraphy of the district and recognition of a suite of pyroclastic rocks that are unique to the Republic graben, 2) identification of disseminated subaerial mineralization at a paleosurface that corresponds to the newly described upper contact of the Sanpoil Volcanics, 3) recognition that epithermal veins have a maximum productive vertical range of 0-500 meters, measured from the paleosurface, and 4) veins exhibit visual and geochemical vertical zoning within the productive zone with highest gold occurring at an optimal depth, which is interpreted as the average depth of hydrothermal boiling.

Focusing on relationships between severity measure versus productivity and other factors, this paper presents a comprehensive study of injuries for U.S. underground coal mines in 1996 by mine size. Based on analyses of data, generally the larger the mine, the more productive it is (in tons per employee-hour), but the more severe is its injury experience (r = 0.65). Within very large, large, and medium mine sizes, however, the more productive the mine, the less severe is its injury experience (r =-0.43, -0.36, and -0.26, respectively). For small and very small mines, a more deeply nested analysis is required to understand relationships. Other interesting relationships and comparisons are presented.

A 9-meter-long drift was constructed in the unsaturated-fractured tuff at Yucca Mountain to evaluate the potential for water seeping into an underground opening. Forty seepage tests were performed by releasing a finite volume of water at a constant rate into short test intervals located in boreholes positioned above the drift. The seepage threshold flux, defined as the liquid-release flux at and below which water will not drip into the opening, was determined for 10 test intervals. The seepage data, observations, and model results indicate that a seepage threshold exists because a capillary barrier diverts water around the opening.

M.S. Azun I do not at all agree with the basic points of the author's conclusion. The use of lognormal or normal model to respond to the attribute distribution function should be carefully questioned. If fitting a distribution function of regionalized variables is the main purpose, one may employ one of certain well-known families of distributions, such as Tukey's lambda functions. For instance, the distribution function of gold assay values studied by Krige (Krige, 1978) may fit the lognormal model well, but one should not exclude that the basic idea of using the distribution function of observed data is to have insight of the physical mechanism that gives rise to the regionalized variables. In Applied Geostatistics, there are many examples considering only lognormal or normal model for the distribution function of geostatistical data even if the observed distribution function has more than one mode. Of course, using lognormal or normal model always brings easy computation for the statistical properties of attribute under investigation. Still, I object to adopting any of those models without having any "statistical inference." As seen from the author's paper, lognormal and normal model produce the same average grade (0.746% copper) and almost the same sample variance. Therefore, which model explains the probabilistic behavior of ore deposit is always an important question that should be replied by the geostatistician using not the common sense but the statistical and probabilistic methods. For kriging procedures, such as linear kriging, one should describe either second order stationary properties or bivariate properties of regionalized variables. Second order properties, such as correlogram function or semivariogram function, are the inputs of the so-called kriging equations. Selecting one of any useable models for the observed second order properties, such as spherical model, is not easy since the models are not based on the correlations structure of the regionalized variables. How those models being used in Applied Geostatistics can be distinguished is another important problem. One may develop many fitting models to respond to the observed second order properties of regionalized variables. However, I suggest that the model should be based on the probabilistic behavior of geologic process. The author used spherical model for copper, wolfram, and silver grades from isotropic sector (Fig. 2, 4, 3b) and exponential model for silver grades obtained along raises in isotropic sector (Fig. 3a). It seems that those semivariograms given in Fig. 3b for isotropic sector and Fig. 4 may be described by the random model implying that regionalized variables do belong to renewal process (Azun, 1983). If I knew the total number of data points used in estimation, I may prove that my conclusion is correct. Recalling the test for the first order sample correlogram value, the test procedure is introduced such that the independence is rejected if [ ] where Za/2 is the a/2 percentile of standard normal random variable and N is the total number of samples used in estimation (Azun, 1983). For the other observed semivariogram functions I suggest the author might try to use the so-called "Markovian model" describing not only the correlation structure of regionalized variables, but also the physical mechanism that produces the regionalized variables. The Markovian model for correlogram function is, [ ] The Markovian model for the other second order properties of ReV are also derived. T ve B, in the above equation, show, for example, structural change and mineralizational variation in a considered deposit, respectively (Azun, 1983). In selecting any model, it is not easy to search for the "best" response to the observed second order properties of ReV's. The Markovian model, based on a theoretical understanding of underlying mechanism, gives more information about the occurrence of regionalized variables and respond to all properties. Random model and the so-called hole effect structure can be easily defined as a special form of the Markovian model (Azun, 1983). An estimation of any second order properties of regionalized variables may be computed through (N-1) lag. However, the dependency between the regionalized variables may be deemed to have "died out" after the so-called stationarity width (range). In practice, the estimation is carried out through 25% of the total number samples available. Therefore, the large fluctuations around the zero level and variance for correlogram or covariogram function and semi-variogram function, respectively, cannot be observed. Since the number of pairs involved in the estimation of higher second order properties is small, the estimation variance at those lags is large. There is no need to show higher order estimated second order properties. Hard times continued to plague the industry when the calendar rolled over to 2000. During 1999, the United States economy had grown vigorously, capping the longest economic expansion in United States history. However, the mining industry was not so fortunate. Commodity prices remained in a slump in the “new-economy” that was fueled by excitement and speculation about the power of the Internet during the infancy of the Information Age. Much of the investment money that once went to mining and exploration was now headed to the world of virtual gold mines. SME President Donald E. Ranta implemented new technology into his plans for SME. His two major goals were new membership growth and to foster the establishment of the comprehensive Internet presence for the Society’s technical information. His strategic priorities included enhancing the quality and quantity of publications, programs, meetings and short courses. “The Internet is the vehicle that will advance the priorities,” he said.

Ball mills are commonly used for regrinding operations in the mineral processing industry. But, in recent times, efforts are being made at the introduction of stirred mills particularly for those instances where very fine grinding is required. Media type (steel shot, glass beads, alumina balls and crushed quartz), media size, mill speed and the number of passes required to obtained the target product size are studied. The product size and energy consumption are used in the evaluation of the test results. The grinding media size, shape, density, filling ratio, mill circumferential speed and grinding time play a distinct role in product size fineness.

The Lewis Street CSO Tunnel is an important element in the efforts of the Metropolitan Government of Nashville and Davidson County (Metro) to improve the treatment of waste-water in the area. The tunnel is approximately 1,675m (5,500ft) long with a finished diameter of 2,600mm(102inches). 116m (380ft) of tunnel was constructed in soil with the balance being in lime-stone rock. Excavation was with a 3,700 mm (12ft) diameter Jarva hydraulic shield in soil and a Jarva Mark 12 TBM in rock. The permanent lining of the tunnel comprised concrete pipe with steel end-rings and a vinyl liner. This paper describes the construction of the project with particular emphasis on the excavation and lining of the tunnel.
