"The Greater Paris projects involves the creation of a 200km extension of the actual public transport network on the close outskirt of Paris. In 2011, SYSTRA has been awarded the Engineering studies of a 20km underground section in the densely urbanized southeast quarter of the Parisian suburb. In order to both guide the TBM technology choice and identify and mitigate the risk due to soil settlement during tunnel boring, several analysis have been carried out and integrated into a Geographical Information System to share and manage this risk during the successive design phases of the project. The geological context‘s complexity and the Owner‘ requirements have led to the necessity of using an innovative analysis approach, leveraging both the numerical modelling analysis’s accuracy and the analytical method‘s ease of programming and implementation in a GIS, by the mean of the calibration of the analytical approach’ parameters on the FEM results.INTRODUCTIONThe Greater Paris Transport Project foresees the extension of the actual public transport network to the close outskirt of Paris through the extension lines 11 and 14, the creation of a circular new line around Paris - line 15 completed by lines 16 and 18 linking developing territories - and line 17 to Roissy-Charlesde- Gaulle airport.The SOCIETE DU GRAND PARIS (SGP) is the public institution that promotes this project and awards SYSTRA as Engineering for the 15th Line southeast section.Line 15th – South-East sectionIn 2011, the Owner SGP (SOCIÉTÉ DU GRAND PARIS) awarded to SYSTRA the preliminary and detailed design of a 20km-long underground section of Line 15, between the stations of Villejuif-Louis-Aragon and Noisy-Champs. The mechanism shown here (Fig. 1) may not be all that it appears to be. To many of you it may look like a hopper car, a thing of mobility, in which you would ship coal, ores, limestone, or other bulk materials. It is approximately 50 feet long, 12 feet high, and can be placed on tracks which are on approximate 14 foot centers. But far too often in the past, and all too often today, this mechanism has been made to serve as an immobile storage box, with its primary role -- the transportation of products, seemingly incidental to the storage function. Our engineering training teaches us to conserve resources, despite some of the popular and misconceived philosophies being advanced these days. Those of you who work for companies with traffic departments know that they are always striving to reduce the price which is paid to move your mine products. Today, let's consider and analyze the ways in which the cost of transporting your mine products might be reduced, based on particular reference to coal. Bear in mind that in this context, cost and price are not necessarily synonymous. Until a few years ago, most coal and other bulk materials handled by railroads moved under standard tariff rules. These rules, which still exist today, provided transportation vehicles (railroad cars) for extended periods at no added price to the shipper or receiver. The past year has been difficult for Canada's primary industries. The mining, oil and forestry industries have been hit by low prices and a reduced demand for natural resources. Foreign competition, militant environmentalists, the breakdown of the Asian and European economies and Canada's shrinking dollar have all put additional pressures on the commodity purchaser to buy smarter. It is easy to appreciate why operations and maintenance supervisors want the best performing product. It makes good sense. The challenge is to source that quality product while staying within the budget. The bottom line (price), however, often becomes the control- ling factor, usually at the expense of quality and performance. This is short-term thinking, often with expensive consequences.

Heretofore, underground coal mines in Alabama have operated under only 60 to 360 meters of cover: however, new mines (at least 5 in the early opening or development stages) will be operating under cover ranging from 600 to 660 meters. With increased rock confining pressures, roof stability problems will become more critical. Initial studies in two 7 ½ -minute quadrangle areas in the Warrior coal basin of Alabama indicate that the orientation of certain lineament and fracture-trace modes mapped from ERTS-1 (Earth Resources Technology Satellite) imagery correlate closely with the strike of joint and fault modes. High altitude (118,000 m) U-2 aircraft data were used to support these findings. In addition, over 50 percent of the normal faults mapped in the study area could be directly correlated with ERTS and U-2 lineaments and fracture traces. These correlations provide clues to the structural development of the Warrior coal basin and may, in turn, be used as a guide to the prediction of roof-stability conditions in advance of mining.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The 23rd Annual National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum Banquet will begin with an open house and reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and program at 7 p.m. The four inductees are: William Wheeler Coleman who served 46 years, from 1911 to 1957, as president and chairman of the company that is now Bucyrus International of South Milwaukee, WI, a world leader in the manufacture of surface and underground mining equipment. Dr. Allen Van Heyl, Jr., an economic geologist who served with the U.S. Geological Survey for nearly 50 years beginning in 1943. He studied more of the nation?s mineral deposits than most could begin to imagine. Arthur Lakes contributed enormously to the geological and mining sciences in the western United States as a geologist, teacher, writer and artist over a period of more than four decades beginning in 1869. The Arthur Lakes Library at the Colorado School of Mines, Golden, CO, is named for him. Samuel Calvin McLanahan, through his inventive genius, changed the direction of his family?s company from that of a foundry to a leading manufacturer of minerals processing equipment to become today?s McLanahan

Trialkylphosphine sulphides, in contrast to their well known oxide analogues (1,2,3,4), have received comparatively little attention as metal extractants and previous studies have been biased toward analytical rather than commercial solvent extraction applications (5,6,7). The sulphides are soft Lewis bases and only from complexes readily with the limited number of metals in the periodic table which can be classified as soft acids (8) e.g. Ag+, Hg2+ and Pd2+. Consequently, these compounds tend to be more selective than the broad-spectrum, hard-base, phosphine oxide extractants such-as TOPO (trioctylphosphine oxide). The purpose of this paper is to describe a potential application of one phosphine sulphide, CYANEX® 471X extractant, in the selective recovery of silver from base metal sulphate solutions. CYANEX 471X is triisobutylphosphine sulphide (TIBPS).

Introduction Thick seams constitute a considerable portion of Polish coal reserves. In producing mines and those under construction, the reserves where the height is more than 4.5 m (15 ft) total about 24% of all the hard coal reserves. The reserves that are under urban and industrial areas can be extracted using stowing methods for surface protection. About 50% of thick seam reserves can be extracted by caving methods. Thick seam mining methods Thick seams are usually extracted by multilift methods. There are some methods of thick seam mining that generally can be divided into caving and stowing methods. The stowing method is more expensive, but must be used when mining to protect surface features. The more known methods of thick seam mining include • extraction of thick seam in ascending order with stowing ; • thick seam mining in descending order with consolidated stowing; • thick seam mining with gob consolidation; • thick seam mining in descending order with roof caving ; • sublevel caving thick seam mining system; and • thick seam mining system using an artificial roof. Thick seam mining with introduction of an artificial roof The most advantageous method of thick seam mining is the method using an artificial roof. The artificial roof usually consists of wire mesh. Such wire mesh must be durable and must prevent small rock fragments from passing through. The mesh is usually made of steel properly protected against corrosion. The artificial roof is placed on the coal floor of the top slice (Fig. 1). Caving rock falls on the artificial roof and is thus separated from the coal. The next slice is extracted under the artificial roof. The producing face of the next slice must progress within 10 m (33 ft) behind the front of the first slice. As the second producing face progresses, the wire mesh moves down on the coal floor and may be used as an artificial roof for the next slice. Thus, one artificial roof allows the extraction of several consecutive slices. Application of the artificial roof allows for clean extraction and reduces coal losses. It also eliminates the hazard of spontaneous combustion. Introduction of the artificial roof has been limited due to a lack of artificial roof laying equipment. Manual laying of wire mesh is a labor-intensive operation, and it delays face progress, resulting in poor productivity. To eliminate these problems, artificial roof laying equipment was designed at the Polish Central Mining Institute. The support and the method of laying operation is covered by a patent. Froth flotation of alumina particles was studied by employing and hydrogen gas bubbles. The effect of current density was studied over a range of 0.1 to1.6 kA/m2. Compared to hydrogen, the use of oxygen bubbles at any given gas evolution rate resulted in a higher flotation recovery. The existence of an optimum current density, for each given particle size was indicated. Flotation at higher current densities resulted in better flotation kinetics, while flotation at lower current densities resulted in better Spas utilization.

Agriculture in the United States today is becoming more and more a business, rather than a way of life. In the light of this, it behooves the farm-supply industries that provide the American farmer with his tools of production--feed, fertilizer, machinery, and the like--to give even greater attention than they have in the past to meeting the needs of the farmer-businessmen they are serving. Increasing competition among the companies that make up these industries merely accentuates this need for better service. An opportunity for such improved service, not yet fully realized, exists in the fertilizer industry today. That opportunity lies in the increased transportation of fertilizer ingredients by water. However, before the benefits inherent in this increased water movement of fertilizers can be fully realized, certain obstacles must be met and overcome. It is the purpose of this paper to outline the nature and magnitude of this opportunity, to point out some of the roadblocks and the steps that can be, or are being, taken to remove them, and to indicate some of the rewards that would logically stem from success in these efforts.

"The analysis of the mining laws of the different European States reveals big diversities and, often, remarkable complications. This is due, firstly, to the history and culture of different States and, secondly, to the assets of natural resources. It is therefore difficult to find a common line between the text of the various mining laws, but it can be observed that nearly all the States distinguish the mining resources in two categories: the materials whose importance is considered strategic belong to the first category; in the second category the materials whose importance (above all economic) is mainly local are comprised. The paper, analysing in detail the planning procedures in some important Countries, investigates the possible perspectives of arranging some guide-lines for a correct approach to the sustainable exploitation planning/programming of mineral resources (with particular reference to "quarry" materials, such as aggregates), considering both the environment protection and the production needs."

The planning of an underground mine for successful extraction of a bedded deposit in sedimentary rocks requires the integrated evaluation of many interdependent problems. The development and coordination of feasible solutions are the responsibility of the mining engineer. One of these problems will be discussed herein; this is the design and .layout of mine workings to secure effective control of the strata above and below the deposit. The objective is the simplest possible repetitive system permitting safe maximum recovery at optimum cost. Mining conditions to be encountered must be predictable. The best mining equipment is ineffective unless strata are controlled. Conversely, a mining layout is only of academic interest, if equipment can not be adapted to work it with adequate provision for ventilation, compliance with mining laws, proper ingress and egress and other practical requirements. Strata control, then, is but one of the mining engineer's problems, and the solutions must be worked out concurrently with solutions to other problems. Dr. Karl F. Fetters in his introductory remarks before the Fourth International Conference on Strata Control and Rock Mechanics at Columbia University said that mining engineering ?has come from the stage of empiricism backed by intuitive reasoning, to where it is based on fundamental scientific and engineering principles?. The standard curriculum in mining engineering now reflects such a change. In common with other branches of engineering education, less and less emphasis is placed on practical skills and more and more on broad scientific education. Science, research and the quest for basic truth are stressed, while descriptive courses and the teaching of specific skills are limited.

Oxidized coals are difficult to float. Therefore, in this paper, a special flotation procedure was investigated for upgrading this type of coal. The procedure is called direct contact flotation. It relies on mixing dry coal either with pure (anhydrous) flotation reagent(s) or microemulsion. By applying the new direct contact flotation procedure, a coal yield reaching > 95% using anhydrous flotation reagents was achieved, but with relatively high consumption of reagents (up to 30 g/kg). This high reagent consumption may be attributed to the fines included in the flotation feed (100% less than 0.5 mm, with 40% less than 75 µm). On the other hand, the clean coal yield was found to be approximately 88% when mixing dry oxidized coal with microemulsion droplets from dodecane and dodecyl tetra (ethylene glycol) ether (C12E4) in water at a total reagent dosage of 10 g/kg. The direct contact of coal either with unhydrous reagents or microemulsion also provided a high flotation selectivity.

Members of AIME, I read to you now a portion of a very fine business letter which we received several years ago. This letter originated in Rangoon, Burma, and reads in part: "Rest assured, if your goodselves see with us eye to eye, sure as certain we should get the business". I don't plan to give anybody "the business" today, but you can rest assured that if some of "you goodselves see with me eye to eye" on what I am about to discuss, I would be most pleased. My talk with you today will discuss the Federal Corporate income tax and its effect on our lives as engineers. In the-engineering-construction business we are faced with all the usual form of taxation which includes such items as sales tax, use tax, school tax, contractor; gross receipt tax, import duties and excise taxes, severance taxes, etc, adinfinutum.

This paper presents the results of a study conducted on a slope failure that occurred in the Q7 mining cut at Rio Tinto's Bingham Canyon Mine. The slope failure occurred in a weak rock mass with an estimated rock mass rating of 25%. The failure mechanism was of the circular type, involving ten 15-m (50-ft) benches and covered a total width of 152 m (500 ft). The analysis used Adam Technology's photogrammetric method with a two-dimensional rock fall simulation program (RocFall software) to design a 3-m- (1 0-ft-) high berm located 7 m (24 ft) from the toe of the failed mass. Back and predictive analyses were performed on a cross-section through the slide using Slope/W software, resulting in flattening the interramp angle (IRA) from 44° to 38°. This design modification produced a factor of safety (FOS) of 1.14. Sensitivity analysis involving FOS vs. pore water pressure showed that FOS is sensitive to water saturation. A dewatering system using a series of horizontal holes drilled below the slide and dewatering holes drilled from a drainage gallery has since been established to improve the stability of the slope. Throughout the one-year period since this investigation, no significant slope movement has been detected by the slope stability radar, and mining is in progress below the failure.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. Parameter estimation of the inverse distance estimation algorithm is presented. The objective function to be minimized is a sum of squared cross validation errors. The unknowns to be estimated are the exponent of the inverse distance estimator and anisotropic angles and ratios that are used in determining the distances in the algorithm. Examples are presented for both two and three dimensions data sets.

A heavy mineral sand sample was tested containing 13% heavy mineral consisting of rutile, zircon, and ilmenite. Eleven tests were run at a mill site with a Mineral Deposit Limited MG 4 spiral to determine the effect of the addition 0; magnets to the spiral compared to conventional gravity separation. Different magnet configurations and field strengths were tested. Optimum results were obtained with the spiral retrofitted with magnets. The heavy mineral content of the concentrate was increased from 55.5% in the control to 64.2% with the magnets. The 8.7% improvement in heavy mineral recovery was due not only to the weakly-magnetic ilmenite, but also to increased recoveries if the non-magnetic zircon and rutile. The increased recoveries were achieved with no loss of concentrate grade.

"In recent years, the demand for rare earth elements (REEs) has grown due to increasing demand and global supply shortage. The supply deficit of these critical elements has encouraged the search for new sources, with coal and coal byproducts as possibilities. Coals from certain parts of the world can be rich in REEs and can approach a total concentration of 1,000 ppm. Two Alaskan coal samples, from Healy and Wishbone Hill, were investigated for the effects of density and particle size on REE concentrations for three selected size fractions, and flotation tests were conducted on finer fractions. Additionally, bottom ash and fly ash samples from a power plant were examined for their REE concentrations. The results show that the upgrade potential for REEs on an ash basis from a whole-coal basis ranges from 2:1 for the Wishbone Hill samples to 4:1 for the Healy coal samples. Flotations of the finer fractions of the two coal samples, conducted under similar conditions, revealed higher concentrations of REEs in the tailings. Both coal samples had comparatively higher contents of light-group rare earth elements (LREEs) than heavy-group rare earth elements (HREEs). REE content trends for the power-plant products on an ash basis indicate that fly ash has slightly higher concentrations of both LREEs and HREEs than bottom ash. IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs), also known as rare earth metals, and their compounds are vital components in industrial, automotive, petrochemical, defense and medical applications. Dysprosium in combination with other elements is used in laser materials and nuclear control applications. Neodymium is present in magnets that are used in the manufacture of wind turbines and hybrid cars. Europium, terbium and yttrium are used in devices that have visual displays such as computer screens and laptops (Haxel, Hedrick and Greta, 2002; Bunzli, 2013). REEs pose fewer environmental problems of disposal and recycling than their conventional heavy metal counterparts (Haxel, Hedrick and Greta, 2002). They are key materials for radar systems, avionics, modern national defense and satellites (Cammarata and Sieradzki, 1994; Hedrick, 2010; Martin, 2010; Szumigala and Werdon, 2011; Cordier, 2011; Bunzli, 2013). REEs are often classified into light-group rare earth elements (LREEs) and heavy-group rare earth elements (HREEs). This classification is primarily based on the electronic configuration in the outermost shell. LREEs, ranging from lanthanum to gadolinium, have a single or no spinning electron in the outermost 4f shell while HREEs, ranging from terbium to lutetium, have paired electrons in the 4f shell. This difference in electronic configuration is responsible for the differences in physical and chemical properties of REEs."

"INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been increasing focus on environmental and social impacts of the extractive industries, climate change and resource scarcity. The concept of the circular economy aims to replaces the “take-make-dispose” economic model with one that eliminates waste of all kinds and is restorative by design. Such closed-loop systems implicitly aim to reduce the quantity of primary extracted materials entering the economy, thereby affecting supply and demand dynamics, hence mining industry economics. For the metals industry, the ability to engage in, or adapt to the circular economy can be heavily affected by industry structure and geographical factors. Eco-efficiency initiatives that reduce waste and environmental impact may help the mining and metals industry align with some of the goals of the circular economy. This paper focuses on base metals, and explores case studies in copper, lead and zinc. It analyzes primary and secondary metal production, and recycling. It examines company structures and how these affect engagement with the circular economy. CIRCULAR ECONOMY PRINCIPLES Ellen MacArthur Foundation (2012) describes the circular economy as “an industrial system that is restorative or regenerative by intention and design”, which “replaces the ‘end-of-life’ concept with restoration”, and “aims for the elimination of waste through the superior design of materials, products, systems, and, within this, business models”. The concept is systems focused. For materials such as metals, a series of loops are considered, including maintenance of devices, reuse, refurbishment and recycling. Potential methodologies to achieve circular economy outcomes include disassembly and reassembly of manufactured goods, leasing rather than buying major appliances, and converting to renewable energy sources. The circular economy is partially aligned with the principles of eco-efficiency, which relate to reducing the environmental impact per unit of a material produced. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY METAL PRODUCTION Base metals (copper, lead, zinc and nickel) are essential ingredients in modern economies and are key commodities produced by the global mining industry. Metal production can be categorized as primary or secondary. Primary metal comes from the processing, smelting and refining of metal content extracted from ores, while secondary production comes from metals recovered from recycled streams (e.g. recycled lead-acid batteries, copper wire scrap, etc.). Metals are stored in natural, anthropogenic in-use and anthropogenic waste stocks. An example of the stocks, flows and processes associated with global copper extraction and use is shown in Figure 1."

Talc, as a mineral, is rather widespread, but as an ore sultable for mining, it is rather limited. Materials sold as "talc" range from the impeccable white material from Italy to a gray-green-bluish material from Virginia. Some uses of the material called "talc" seem to be determined by the color of the material, some by the chemistry of the material, and some by the particle size of the ground material. But, there seems to be some overlapping of criteria used to judge the acceptability of a raw material. So then, any producer of talc material that is not a consumer of this raw material is faced with the age-old problems: "what do I call the stuff, and to whom should I try to sell it?" The answer to the first part is easy: if you want a high price, call it "talc"; if you want a low price, call it "soapstone". This may seem like a very simplified answer, but it is apparent that some of the products sold as "talc" have more than a minor amount of impurities in them; whereas, if they were called "soapstone", these same products would probably get a lower price.
