Traditional risk quantification methods provide little information on the sources of risk, and tend to produce static over-conservative evaluations, which do not account for changes in the performance of the project. Capital investment decisions for large mining projects require of more complex risk evaluation models, that include the value of flexibility and the different risk levels associated with uncertainty on project variables (price, grade, dilution, production rates, among many other). In this context, Real Option Valuation (ROV) methods have proven potential to quantify the risk associated with such variables and integrate alternative scenarios and management strategies into the evaluation process. In this paper, a risk quantification model is developed, which successfully quantifies the risk associated to dilution, as a function of production rate. This model is then validated in a case study on the Chuquicamata Underground Mining Project.

Rock joint stiffness is not only a poorly known parameter, but also has no established laboratory measurement procedure. This paper presents methods used to determine the normal and shear stiffnesses of healed joints filled with vapor-altered minerals obtained from the Yucca Mountain site in Nevada. Results show that these joints behave linearly up to 85% of their loading history and are stiff with strengths very close to the strength of the intact rock. Factors that might have contributed to the linear behavior of these joints are discussed and areas requiring further investigation are provided. Joint normal stiffness ranges from 7.16 to 64.77 GPa/mm with an average value of 26.93 GPa/mm, while joint shear stiffness averages 11.41 GPa/mm and ranges from 3.09 to 28.41 GPa/mm. Young?s modulus of the vapor-altered joint infilling was calculated from the stiffness of the healed joint. Young?s modulus of the vapor-altered joint filling material averages 7.89 GPa and ranges from 2.15 to 19.43 GPa. Given the pervasive presence of such altered rock, usually in the form of sub-spheroidal 3-D pockets, this property should be of value in any numerical modeling attempting to describe the mechanical behavior of these tuff formations at the level of detail where inclusions might be a factor.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs), despite their small size, are stable and have a large surface area that allows for absorption and removal of ions as well as turbidity in a short period of time. Thus, the present study addressed the synthesis and characterization of Fe3O4 NPs synthesized using the co-precipitation method and evaluated their effect on the coagulation process in water treatment. The Fe3O4 NPs characteristics were evaluated as follows: magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), surface area using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), crystal phase using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and morphology using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). In addition, the effects of the synthetic Fe3O4 NPs on the turbidity reduction of water in various pH levels were evaluated. The synthesized Fe3O4 NPs were without any impurity in the sizes of 22–32 nm, surface area of 99.6 m2/g, pores’ mean diameter size of approximately 10.6 nm, and maximum magnetic saturation of 66.21 emu/gram (emu/g). Using 0.2 g of synthetic Fe3O4 NPs with an initial turbidity of 17 NTU and pH of 6 could reduce all water turbidity (100%). Considering the cheap and facile production and separation, as well as the possibility to reuse them and reduce the sludge water content, iron oxide Fe3O4 NPs can be effectively used for turbidity reduction in the water treatment process.

Electric utilities depend heavily on coal as a major fuel source for power generation, annually producing more than 85 million tom of ash, boiler slag and FGD (flue gas desulfurization - "scrubber") materials as by-products. Utilities and others who bum coal have traditionally disposed of these by-products in ponds or landfills. However, in the last 10-15 years there has been a greatly increased emphasis on beneficial utilization of these materials by the producers themselves as well as by customers who purchase the by-products. Regulatory, cost and technical performance issues currently impact the use of coal ash and other coal combustion by-products (CCB).

Major scientific discoveries cannot be programmed. New or frontier technology, however, can and should be planned. It is the vital force underlying the business strategy of a vigorous and profitable mining and metals company. Generally, a radical departure from existing technology is required to 1) Enhance the competitive value of ore reserves, i.e., to turn low grade or marginal reserves into competitive reserves. 2) To increase yield and decrease costs. 3) To decrease investment. 4) To increase mine life. 5) To improve product quality to meet market demands. The very definition of frontier technology implies that it is so different that the old plant, if already in use, will not be directly suitable to use the new technology. Therefore, a priori, we know that the commercialization of frontier technology would very likely involve new investment. The recommended technique of economic and technical analyses, I propose to call "Success Analysis.'' Simply stated, it forces us, by step- by-step procedure, to ask "what is needed to succeed in this particular project." Therefore, the first step is to identify what is meant by "success." The definition of "success" requires an agreement with top management or sponsors of the project as to what constitutes "success" in their minds as contrast to the technical people perception of "success." In general, top management would define success as meeting: 1) The technical objectives, i.e., technology being developed would produce the desired product at the acceptable quality. 2) Financial objectives, i.e., when commercialized, the project's capital cost, operating costs and return on investment are better than the projects they would normally fund. The return has to be better because new technology is inherently riskier. 3) Marketing objectives in that the project will produce product of acceptable quality in timely manner, i.e., scale-up to commercial plant would not cause undue delays in start-up and that large fix-up expenditure would not be required to protect the projected return on the investment. Many projects are started in the laboratory to develop "Frontier Technology" in mineral processing. Most of these efforts are never commercialized. There are many causes of these failures. The major causes are listed below: 1) Inadequate communication with the sponsors of the project so that project objectives are defined and agreed to by all. 2) Ill-defined technical problems. 3) Incomplete development of technology. This has two major components: a. Incorrect scale-up and engineering. b. Inadequate start-up and maintenance planning. 4) Incomplete and over-optimistic process economics. 5) Lack of understanding of the future behavior of the marketplace. 6) Failure to complete R&D effort by the time it is needed. 7) Incorrect projections of human resources required; that is, technical, managerial and operating. 8) Lack of realistic forecast of the expenditures required for commercialization of the R&D effort. These pitfalls can be avoided by comprehensive planning and the use of success analysis technique. The major elements in "Success Analysis" are: 1) Identification of the "need" for new technology. 2) Unbiased and complete scale-up engineering. 3) Acceptable economic feasibility with enough margin of error in the sale prices and operating costs to justify the inherent risks in frontier technology. 4) Timing for availability of investment capital and markets. Many failures in the development of frontier technology are preordained because the initial selection of the research project has been without adequate attention to the needs of the industry. Many very innovative hydrometallurgical processes for recovery of copper from concentrates were developed in the past twenty years. They have not adapted except to a very minor extent because they did not satisfy the success analysis criteria. Although the number of operating longwalls (approximately 100) has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have significantly increased and have in some cases more than doubled. As a result of the increase in production, control of respirable dust continues to be a problem. Therefore, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Health Technology Center, Dust Division, initiated a study to investigate the availability and adequacy of technology for controlling dust on longwall mining operations. The study involved 23 longwall mining operations in three different Coal Mine Safety and Health Districts. Each operation was visited for a full shift. Respirable dust samples were collected on face personnel and at fixed locations along the face. Parameters in place to control dust were noted with special emphasis being placed on obtaining quantitative data relative to ventilation, headgate dust controls, cutting drum sprays, external machine sprays and cutting sequence. Attempts were made to correlate dust control parameters in place at the time of the visit to dust concentrations measured at the tail, on the tail shearer operator and to the average concentration of dust determined from averaging all the measurements from the occupations sampled. The parameters in place to control dust were also compared to the gamut of technology known to be available to control dust. This paper presents a discussion on the effectiveness of the parameters in place to control dust and on the availability of technology for the control of dust on longwall mining operations.

The paper presents the results of a study which involved collection and analysis of airborne pollutant concentration data in two producing underground room and pillar metal mines which use diesel powered equipment in the area near the face. The results include the concentrations of CO2, CO, NO, NO2 and respirable particulate matter measured with the latest portable instruments, and the carbon and hydrogen contents of the particulate matter samples determined by combusting them in a Elemental Analyzer. The carbon and hydrogen contents are used to estimate the amount of diesel particulate matter in the mine ambient air. The short term grab sample concentration data, although not suitable for determining compliance with ACGIH Threshold Limit Values (TLVs), are related to the TLVs so that they may be compared conveniently. Lognormal frequency distributions and the arithmetic mean of the concentration measurement data are used to compare different mine situations. Conclusions are drawn as to which pollutants are most important to control under actual mine production conditions.

Deposited millions of years ago in irregular paleokarstic channels, Jamaica’s extensive bauxite deposits provide good quality ore for alumina production and subsequent aluminum smelting. Bauxite mining operations are critical to the Jamaican economy. It accounts for a large percentage of Jamaica’s export earnings. Bauxite production in Jamaica accounts for about 10% of the world’s output each year. Bauxite deposits in Jamaica lie close to the surface. They can be extracted using standard surface mining techniques. The deposits occur in scattered pockets across the country’s rugged landscape. So it was necessary for two of the country’s major mining and refining operations to implement cost effective methods for the acquisition and management of bauxite reserves and surface ownership distribution rights.

This work describes the effect of process parameters on the acidulation of Moroccan phosphate rock using nitric acid, i.e., the nitro-phosphate process. A series of bench scale experiments were conducted, using a stirred tank reactor (STR) system, to investigate the chemical reactions involved and optimum conditions for the formation of nitro-phosphate fertilizer. The effect of reaction time, temperature, mixing speed, acidulation ratio, and acid concentration were investigated, and were found to have an effect on the dissolution of P2O5 from the phosphate rock, using nitric acid. An increase in nitric acid concentration resulted in an increase in P2O5 dissolution, however, the dissolution was also found to be a function of acidulation ratio. A nitric acid phosphate rock ratio of 4:l ensured 90% dissolution for nitric acid concentration > 30%.

The iron and steel industry continues to operate at depressed production levels due to the low level of demand for steel and foundry products. Crude steel production in the Western world dropped by 13.7% from 459.3 Gt (506 billion st) in 1981 to 396.4 Gt (437 billion st). The reduction was particularly severe in North America where the industry suffered a loss of 37.3% from 123.6 to 77.5 Gt (136 to 85 billion st). This reduced level of production severely affected iron ore and agglomerates output. Substantial curtailment was made in both sintering and pelletizing plants to meet reduced demand. The pressure on these plant operators shifted from quantity to quality. With energy cost becoming an ever increasing part of production costs, conservation was a major area of emphasis. Iron Making Sinter has continued to be the favored burden for blast furnaces overseas. As hot metal production declined and excess sintering capacity developed, many of the overseas operators that have been using pellets found it advantageous on hot metal production cost to increase the ratio of sinter at the expense of pellets. This was the case despite the depressed price level of pellets in the world market. In North America where pellets have been the predominant burden material-mainly because it is necessary to pelletize the fine grain iron ores available domestically-there was also increased interest in sinter usage. Bethlehem Steel Corporation's 13.6-m (44.5-ft) furnace at Sparrows Point experimented with a burden with more than 70% of sinter during the second half of the year and indicated some favorable results as compared to its previous 50% super flux sinter and 50% acid pellet burden. The blast furnace operators continued to press for improved burden quality. In addition to the emphasis on the importance of burden chemistry and quality, uniformity, much emphasis was placed on improving reducibilitiy and high temperature metallurgical qualities. These burden properties were recognized to hold further promise in reducing fuels rates. Sintering With reduced consumption caused by the cutback in hot metal production, many sinter plants sat idle while others operated at greatly reduced rates. The deemphasis on production in many plants allowed them to experiment with various means to reduce operating costs. The most notable action was the introduction of low cost South American pellet feed fines into the sinter ore mix. These feed fines, which are finer than 150 µm (100 mesh) ore, were previously thought to be too fine for sintering. However, when the full production rate is not required the use of up to 40% in the ore mix was reported to be successful with the aid of burnt lime and adequate premixing and granulation of the sinter mix before sintering. The emphasis on quality and tighter cost control also has resulted in a further breakthrough in sintering technology. It was recognized that good feed preparation-including selection of compatible ores, good blending, good pseudo-particle formation, additive size control increased bed depth, and closed control of the sintering bed heat pattern-could allow the production of high quality sinters with much lower heat input and FeO level. Bed depth of more than 600 mm (23.6 in.) was practiced in a number of operations. Total heat input of better than 1.3 GJ/t (290,300 kcal per st) has been achieved. Researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated the impact of potential shale gas well breaches and subsequent gas inflow on selected mine ventilation systems of operating longwall panels using a 1:30 scaled Longwall Instrumented Aerodynamic Model (LIAM) and Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) as a tracer gas. A series of tests were performed at 340, 400, and 500 cfm inflow levels utilizing different mine ventilation scenarios. Results suggest that the breached gas can be diluted to meet statutory levels when the longwall panel is adequately ventilated. The results enhance the understanding of the gas inflow and mine ventilation system interaction and provide critical information to the industry and regulatory agencies for improving miners’ safety.

Tracer gases are an effective method for assessment of mine ventilation systems, but their dispersion characteristics can differ substantially as ventilation parameters, such as flow path and velocity, vary. This research utilizes Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to model a simplified full scale model mine, details a sensitivity study examining mesh size for an underground coal mine simulation, and examines gas dispersion parameters to determine the optimal model methods for simulation of tracer gases in underground coal mines. These models can be used to determine how a given tracer gas profile might be generated in a mine or areas of a mine that are not accessible, for example, immediately following a mine disaster. Accurate simulation scenarios can allow for the remote determination of the status of the ventilation network, but the sensitivity of the simulation at mine scale must be carefully examined.

Copper and cobalt can be found on nickel laterite ores, and cobalt can be found also on copper ores, and many contaminants such as iron, aluminum, and magnesium are associated with these ores. In hydrometallurgical process, a purification step is necessary after leaching due to the presence of these impurities. Chelating resins are more selective for some metals than others, making them more efficient than cationic resins. This overview discusses chelating resin applications to recover copper, nickel, and cobalt from mining process and mining tailings and the effect of contaminants in leach solution. Chelating resins with iminodiacetate functional group can be used for selective copper recovery, and both iminodiacetate and bis-picolylamine resins are highly selective for nickel and cobalt. Chelating resins with the same functional group can have different performances on the kinetics of loading, because of variations of structure, the density of functional group, and degree of cross-linking. This article reviews commercial chelating resins that can be applied in leach solutions with different compositions, and also possible innovations for uses of chelating resins to recover metals from mining process and mining tailings.

The Ertsberg East discovery was announced by Freeport in 1979 with proven geological reserves of 45 Mt (49.6 million tons) with a grade of 2.65% copper and recoverable gold values. This recently discovered deposit is one of a cluster of skarn-type copper occurrences found within the limits of Freeport Indonesia's mining con- cession at an elevation of about 3600 m (12,000 ft) in the extremely rugged Jaya Wijaya Mountains of Irian Jaya, the Indonesian half of the island of New Guinea. The Ertsberg East lies about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) east of the Ertsberg ore body, which is also known by the Indonesian name "Gunung Bijih" or "ore mountain." For general background, the original Ertsberg ore body was first discovered by the Dutch geologist Jacques Dozy in 1938 while on a mountain climbing expedition. It was mapped and sampled by Forbes Wilson and Del Flint after a two-week harrowing trek into the mountains from the coastal swamps. A drilling program in 1967- 1968 established that the Ertsberg was a viable mining venture, containing approximately 33 Mt (36.4 million tons) of skarn-type copper ore. The deposit averaged 2.5% copper, with significant values in gold and silver. The first shipment of copper concentrates was made in December 1972, following a capital investment of $200 million. Following the routine production of ore from this deposit, it became necessary to consider additional sources of ore to extend the life of the mining operation. An exploration program was thus started with the initial objective of finding shallow or surface ores which could be blended with the material being mined at Ertsberg. Project geologist Frank Nelson was transferred from Freeport Exploration Co. to the Freeport Indonesia organization at the Ertsberg mine. However, the exploration work was the functional responsibility of Freeport Exploration. Del Flint had overall responsibility for the program from the Reno headquarters office and provided liaison with management in the USA and Indonesia.

The adsorption process, density and structural property of the oleate layer adsorbed onto a hydroxyapatite (HAP) surface at six different concentrations and three pHs (pH 8, 9 and 10) have been studied using the technique of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D). The present study demonstrated the versatility and accuracy of the QCM-D for surface adsorption characterization. The real-time measurements of frequency and dissipation shifts with a hydroxyapatite-coated sensor revealed changes in the hydroxyapatite surface during the entire adsorption process. Chemisorption and surface precipitation of sodium oleate were also observed on the surface of hydroxyapatite through the use of Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR). Chemisorption dominated at low concentrations and high pH values and formed a rigid and thin adsorption layer. Surface precipitation of calcium oleate and micelles dominated at concentrations higher than critical micelle concentration (CMC) and lower pHs and formed a thick but dissipated adsorption layer with a high hydration level. Three distinct adsorption behaviors were identified from the different slopes of ?D-?f plots. The adsorption density was less than a monolayer at concentrations <0.164 mM, but increased significantly at concentrations higher than 0.821 mM at all three pHs. The critical concentration at pH 8 was 0.33 mM, which was lower than at pH 9 (0.821 mM) and pH 10 (3.3 mM).

"THE SS640 AGRIGENTO-CALTANISSETTA PROJECT The Caltanissetta tunnel is part of the works for the construction of the second 28km-long maxi section of the SS 640 motorway of Porto Empedocle, from km 44 to the junction of Imera in Sicilian hinterland. Amongst other major infrastructure works, the €740 million ANAS (Italian national roads and highway administration agency) project consists of four twin tube tunnels three of which are being excavated by conventional means. The longest tunnel, underpasses the Caltanissetta city and has a length of 3.9km under a maximum overburden of 120m. The JV consisting of CMC of Ravenna and TECNIS SpA won the design & built tender in 2010. Construction started in early spring 2012 following the approval of detailed design and later on the approval of design for construction. THE CALTANISSETTA TUNNEL The Design Phase Tender design and detailed design foresaw the construction of 13.4m excavation diameter tunnels that were to be enlarged in a second phase to create, every 600m, 50m-long tunnel sections for emergency parking. During the design for construction project phase the JV proposed to replace the 13.4m tunnel with a 15.08 excavation diameter that incorporated apart from the two 3.75m wide lanes a 3.25m wide continuous emergency lane. This significant tunnel section modification was associated with better road safety conditions, simpler and safer construction procedures, better statics for the tunnel section while in terms of overall cost the solutions were equivalent.Geologic context The tunnel is located in the middle of the geologically known Caltanissetta basin that is intersected by various tectonic structures. The geologic context for the tunnel scale, was defined in collaboration with the University of Catania in early project phases. For almost its entire length the tunnel is excavated in the Terravecchia formation that represents the lower part of the stratigraphic sequence that was formed in the Tortoniano period of Miocene. The quite complex geological model is also characterized by the presence of the so-called Trubi formation that consists of clay and marl clay. Almost 90% of the tunnel traverses formations that are quite similar in terms of excavation behavior. Exception to this are thrust zones and a calcareous stretch of the alignment. This last segment has a length of 200m and was identified since the very beginning as a tunneling challenge due to the combination of very poor geotechnical properties and an important water load."

Construction of a 13m shaft through approximately 100m of water bearing soils and another 100m of bedrock was attempted using the Slurry Diaphragm Wall Method with a combination of deep dewatering wells. During excavation within the slurry wall, unexpected groundwater inflows occurred in a structure of loose silty sands. Artificial ground freezing was selected as a remedial method to seal the leaking slurry wall, and as a primary excavation support and groundwater control method for the 30m of overburden material below the base of the wall. Design of the ground freezing system required analysis of both the structural requirements of the unsupported soil, the frost effects against the existing slurry wall and the groundwater control in the area of the breech in the wall. These design procedures are summarized, and construction and excavation techniques and corresponding schedules compared in this paper. Advanced drilling techniques, ground freezing quality control and general contractor procedures for efficient shaft construction are discussed.

Cerro Colorado lies on the eastern edge of the Atacama Desert in the foothills of the Andean Cordillera of northern Chile. Compañía Minera Cerro Colorado SA (CMCC) operates Cerro Colorado. CMCC, headquartered in Santiago, Chile, is wholly owned by Rio Algom Ltd., of Toronto, Ontario. Cerro Colorado is located 120 km (75 miles)east of the port city of Iquique. Access is by 30 km (19 miles) of paved highway and 70 km (43 miles) of upgraded road. The mine site is located at an altitude of 2600 m (8531 ft) on a gentle west-sloping plateau adjacent to a deep canyon (Quebrada de Parca) to the north. Temperatures are moderate, ranging from 5° to 30° C (41° to 86° F) with an average annual rainfall of 20 mm (0.8 in.). The plateau is generally covered with 20 to 30 m (65 to 100 ft) of Quatemary sand and gravel overlaying bedrock. In the immediate vicinity of the Cerro Colorado deposit, a semicircular embayment has been eroded into a steep canyon wall that cuts through the surface gravels to expose a considerable section of the underlying bedrock.

Can your company afford to issue a check today for $100,000, $500,000, $2,000,000, or $22,000,000? This is what it might cost your company if it is on the losing end of a product liability suit. During the past 10 to 15 years, the number of product liability actions has grown from a handful per year level to a hundreds of thousands per year level. Settlements and awards in the tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars are not unusual in these days. The largest award that the authors haw heard about is a case involving a private airplane and the death of four men, which was awarded over $22,000,000. In the materials handling field, a fork lift truck, ordered with an overhead guard, was delivered without a guard because one was not available at the time. An accident with serious personal injury followed. Wouldn&apos;t it have been better to have waited until the guard was available before delivering the unit? Answer: a quarter of a million dollars better -- the cost of the settlement. Hoisting devices are also not without their liability precedents. In a 1960 case, an employee was injured when a load abruptly fell from a hoist. It was determined that the operator could not possibly have caused such a fall had the hoist been functioning properly. The case was compounded when the manufacturer of the hoist contended that the load had been improperly connected to the device, since the same hoist was used to remove the weight from the injured man without another malfunction.

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority is designing the Silicon Valley Rapid Transit Project in San Jose, California. The project includes 6.9 km (4.3 miles) of twin-bored tunnels to be constructed through downtown San Jose using two earth pressure balance machines (EPBMs). This paper begins with a project description and update of the project status followed by a description of the relationship between anticipated ground conditions and EPBM requirements. Topics addressed include soil conditioning, abrasion resistance, annulus grouting, face pressure estimation, additional pressure control devices and control measures to limit over-excavation and settlement.
