Introduction The post World War II nuclear arms race and interest in nuclear power generation resulted in a significant demand for uranium in the 1950’s. This led to the development of uranium solvent extraction technology and uranium became the first metal to be recovered on a large scale by solvent extraction (SX) (1), interestingly more than 100 years after the extraction of uranium from an acid nitrate solution using diethyl ether was first reported by Peligot.(2) For a variety of reasons discussed elsewhere (3,4) there have been upheavals in the supply demand picture and price for uranium since the 1960’s. (Figure 1) The low price of uranium from the mid 1980’s until 2004 resulted in a depression of new resource exploration and mine development along with uranium mine / mill closures and decommissioning. People with skills in uranium processing could not find suitable employment and many experienced engineers and metallurgists took jobs elsewhere or retired. This resulted in a significant brain drain with respect to uranium processing technology.

Early in 1971 the Peabody Design and Preparation group began engineering on a preparation plant which was to process eight mil- lion tons per year of raw coal. For the first five or six years this product was to be furnished 50% from surface mining operations and roughly 50% from underground operations. By early 1980, 1008 of the production was to come from underground mines. Because of the large annual commitment from Randolph Preparation Plant, it was essential that the plant operate with minimum down-time. As usual, capital costs were to be kept at a minimum. Before we discuss the details of design, it would be best to discuss the overall picture. Underground production to be pro- cessed through Randolph Preparation Plant was to be delivered by means of one mile overland conveyor from Baldwin #1 Underground Mine to the plant. Surface Mine production was to be delivered by means of 100-ton haulage units dumping in a 1,000-ton capacity hopper. Because of the changing production rates in both the underground and surface mines as well as the great difference in size consist, it was decided that it would be necessary to divorce the plant as much as possible from production. For this reason, twin 6,500-ton raw coal silos were constructed to separate the two coals as well as allow blending. The preparation plant itself, was to be designed to Operate two shifts per day, five days per week, at an average rate Of 2,200 tons per hour with a maximum rate of 2600 to 2800 tons per hour. Coal was to be delivered to our customers by means of rail haulage at both unit train rates and plant process rates. The surface mined coal, after discharging into the 1,000-ton R.O.M. hopper, is fed by means of two 72" wide reciprocating feeders onto a 72" wide steel cable belt. The steel cabled conveyor discharges the R.O.M. coal onto a fixed grizzly, scalping out a percent of the 6 x 0 coal. The balance is fed to a 12' x 27' Rotary Breaker. The material passing through 6" round hole screens is added to the 6" x 0" from the scalping screen. The 6" x 0" is conveyed to the top of one of the 6500 ton silos designated for surface coal. Material that is not broken to pass the 6" breaker screen is discharged to a bin and disposed of with plant refuse.

The changes in the elemental contents and the structural properties of chalcopyrite concentrate when roasted were studied, and the main reactions contributing to the leaching process revisited. Firstly, TG/DTA measurements were performed to identify the roasting temperatures that influenced the type of species reacting with sulphuric acid leaching liquor. The temperatures of main reactions, whose output may affect the subsequent leaching process, were analysed for the concentrate at hand, and concluded to be generally lower than those reported in literature. Secondly, the obtained results were confirmed by images and XRD measurements on the roasted concentrate at temperatures in between 350 and 600 °C with increments of 50 °C. Finally, the leaching behaviour of the roasted specimens in a stirred sulphuric acid solution examined and the Cu/ Fe selectivity investigated that the maximum Cu/Fe ratio in the pregnant solution would nearly be achieved for the roasting temperatures lower than 500 °C, since the oxidation temperature of iron sulphate is found lower than that of copper sulphate.

I welcome this opportunity to speak before the Coal Division of the AIME in such an attractive setting as the Pacific Northwest. With the development of the Centralia project, the Pacific Northwest will have its first major coal-fired thermal electric generating plant. This State has a long history of coal mining that diminished with the passage of coal-fired steamships and locomotives but is now reviving with the growth of electrical power demand. Because this 1,400 row plant is to be supplied with surface-mined coal, it is particularly appropriate that this area be the setting for a talk on factors influencing the growth of surface coal mining in the West. During the course of my talk, I will touch on a number of factors including electric power demand, coal resources, production trends, environmental considerations and trends in State and Federal activities that I feel will influence surface coal mining in the West. Total electric power consumption by the year 2000 is expected to reach 9.4 trillion kilowatt-hours. Predictions of total coal consumption for electric power generation by that year range from a low of 845 million tons to a high of 1,520 million tons, or 2.6 to 4.7 times the amount used for this purpose in 1970.

At our annual meeting in St, Louis, Mo. in February 1961, we presented a comprehensive paper (No. 61-B-22) on the subject of "Blending and Handling of Materials for Agglomeration". In that paper you will find a discussion on the difference between "blending" and "mixing". With regard to "blending" we brought out the facts of its usefulness for the preparation o materials in an agglomerated mass to attain controlled chemical and physical uniformity. "Mixing" was discredited as not being useful for the attainment of uniformity of any kind.

With ever-increasing demand, low-grade complex ores and strict environmental regulations, metallurgical processing options have become limited. Heap leach technology provides several benefits to combat these issues including low cost, flexibility and diversified process conditions. This paper provides an overview of heap leaching technology with specific emphasis on chemical aspects. Hence, influencing factors, advantages and disadvantages, testing approaches and some fundamentals will be discussed. Finally, heap leach technology for different ore types (copper, nickel, uranium and gold) will be briefly compared.

Low-grade iron ore received from the West Singhbhum area of Jharkhand state in India was used to develop a beneficiation flow sheet to remove alumina (Al2O3) and silica (SiO2 ) from the ore to get iron (Fe)-rich product for steel plants. Mineral characterization showed that the main mineral constituents present in the head sample are goethite, limonite, hematite, quartz, clay and gibbsite. The head sample contained about 49.2 percent Fe, 8.79 percent alumina and 12.01 percent silica. The received iron ore sample is amenable to upgradation through beneficiation to get pellet grade concentrate. The beneficiation process was established, involving crushing, screening, jigging, spiral separation, size reduction, desliming and magnetic separation. The process showed significant enrichment in Fe values to 63.5 percent Fe in concentrate, from 49.2 percent Fe. From the developed flow sheet, it is possible to obtain pellet grade fines with 63.5 percent Fe, 2.92 percent SiO2 and 2.61 percent Al2O3 with 50.6 percent weight recovery. The overall tailing loss is 49.4 percent with 34.3 percent Fe, 21.28 percent SiO2 and 14.64 percent Al2O3

The use of membranes in wastewater systems has increased rapidly in recent years. Microporous or semi-permeable barriers augment conventional chemical or biological processes to meet stringent treatment targets. These developments enable elegant solutions to wastewater discharge challenges and extend the scope of water recycle redressing the overall water balance and operational economics Wastewater treatment processes are discussed by reference to the spectrum of waterborne contaminants and the respective membrane separation capabilities. The role chemical pre-treatment to enable physical separation of metals with micro-filtration (MF) is described and how integration of MF with reverse osmosis (RO) is used to control a broader range of dissolved contaminants Membrane configurations are considered apropos function, operational economics and sustainability. These features are exemplified with case studies. Firstly, MF alone following chemical precipitation for the removal of heavy metals, then MF onto two stages RO of different configurations for TDS reduction and waste volume minimisation and finally an open channel RO alone for the reduction of inorganic COD from a leach stream.

Maintenance strategy selection plays a significant role in mining design. The nature of maintenance strategy selection is a complex multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem including both tangible and intangible parameters which are often in conflicting with each other. Moreover, when decision makers are uncertain in determining and defining the ratings and the weights of alternatives and criteria respectively, fuzzy theory provides an appropriate tool to handle the existing uncertainties. In this paper, a new fuzzy MCDM method based on the concepts of TOPSIS and AHP was proposed to evaluate the feasible maintenance strategy. The linguistic terms are employed to assess the ratings and weights. Fuzzy AHP is utilized to calculate the weights of the evaluation criteria; then, the rankings of alternatives are computed based on fuzzy sets theory and TOPSIS. A real world case study is presented to illustrate a potential application of the proposed model.

In the mining industry, where some of the vehicles are larger than a one-story house, tire maintenance cannot be accomplished by the tire shop alone. It takes an army of people to maintain a fleet of 100 trucks that may be transporting gold, iron ore, oil sand, copper or coal from an openpit to a refinery and eventually delivering the product to a customer. Everyone working in and around these mammoth machines has a duty to help with the maintenance of the tires, whether they know it or not. These responsibilities comprise observation and reporting hazards up to and including changing out a tire and recording the information in a tire-tracking program such as TreadStat.

Climax Molybdenum Company’s Henderson Mine is a large panel caving molybdenum mine located about 43 miles west of Denver, Colorado. Three Joy M120-72-880 fans are installed in parallel on the No. 1 exhaust shaft. Throughout the mine’s history, ventilation changes such as the completion of the No. 5 exhaust shaft have decreased the utilization of these fans. To optimize fan performance they have been run with the full complement of 16 blades, down to as few as four blades. Since the completion of ventilation upgrades associated with the Henderson 2000 project, one surface fan has been operated under normal conditions with 10 or 12 blades. With the completion of a new network model of the Henderson ventilation system, a tool was built to develop fan curves for possible future fan configurations and predict future fan performance. This paper describes the tool and its use at Henderson.

As the mining industry moves further into developing countries in search of new resources, its role in international development is coming under increasing scrutiny. This is a trend that is likely to accelerate, along with the potential for headaches among managers in the industry. Public interest in development and environmental issues is rising as faith in “big business” falls. This has strengthened nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) campaigning for sustainable development. And it has put more pressure on banks, governments and development agencies to curb corporate misdemeanors. Developing world governments are also becoming emboldened to reject previously agreed terms they do not consider equitable. The mining industry has begun to formulate a response to these pressures but must go much further. Societal and environmental issues must move from public relations to core strategic thinking. Abiding by rules or codes is not a relevant response. Instead, genuine support for sustainable development is required. This will involve delegating the responsibility for engaging with local communities to on-the-ground staff and developing a dialogue with local stakeholders rather than conducting an initial assessment and disengaging.

Copper, nickel, zinc and other ?penalty? metals are found with gold together in nature, and have a similar chemical affinity for cyanide used in leaching operations4. As a result, solutions that come from the heap leach pads contain a significant concentration of penalty metals along with the desired gold. In solution, gold and cyanide form the complex Au(CN)2- that is readily adsorbed onto activated carbon. Penalty metals as individual metal ions also load onto activated carbon and, depending on the concentration of cyanide and the pH of the solution, can form various cyanide complexes. Some of these complexes can also load onto carbon while some are significantly inhibited from loading. Copper, for example, can form the dicyanide complex Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide complex Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide complex Cu(CN)43-. At a low pH and a low concentration of cyanide, the dicyanide complex predominates. At a higher pH and a higher concentration of cyanide, the tetracyanide complex predominates. Without excess cyanide, however, individual copper ions can remain present. Activated carbon is used in gold extraction because it is highly selective for gold and less so for other metals, such as copper3. However, copper has the ability to adsorb (?load?) onto activated carbon and block the adsorption of gold when it is in the dicyanide form and in a high enough concentration. When copper is in the tetracyanide form, copper loading is significantly inhibited, allowing for the maximum gold recovery. In order to ensure the tetracyanide complex is formed, a combination of both available cyanide and elevated pH must be present. In the South Area of Newmont Mining Corporation?s Gold Quarry mine in Carlin, Nevada, copper and nickel loading becomes a problem when certain acid generating zones of the heap are leached. Copper, nickel, zinc and other penalty metals become leachable and the lower pH uses up more of the cyanide and creates carbon loading conditions for the metals. This decreases the carbon?s ability to extract the gold from solution, decreasing the recovery and increasing the concentration of gold in the barren solution that leaves the carbon columns. In this study, operational data from March through to May of 2007 is presented to show how Newmont developed a quick fix to lower pH and elevated metal concentrations that were causing low gold loadings on activated carbon at their South Area Leach (SAL) heap leach operations. Laboratory tested were also conducted to examine the chemical kinetics of metal loading and the individual effects of increased cyanide concentrations. THEORY Copper I ions form four different complexes with cyanide in solution: the monocyanide species CuCN, the dicyanide species Cu(CN)2-, the tricyanide species Cu(CN)32-, and the tetracyanide species Cu(CN)43-. The species are formed from the following reactions: [Cu)(?+-+ K1 (1) Cu ß2 (2) --+?+23)(3CNCuCNCu ß3 (3) --+?+34)(4CNCuCNCu ß4 (4) ] where K1 equals 1019.50, ß2 equals 1024.03, ß3 equals 1028.65, and ß4 equals 1030.35. Along with these complexing reactions, hydrogen cyanide and water also dissociate in solution, as per the following reactions: [H?+-+ KH (5) OHOHH2?+-+ KW (6)] where KH has a value of 109.24 and KW has a 1014 value2. These six chemical equations compete with each other, with domination of one over the others dependent on the CN- and H+ concentrations. Each complex also has different properties when it comes to its loading behavior on activated carbon. The dicyanide copper complex and the monocyanide copper complex have an affinity for adsorption onto activated carbon that is greater than the affinity of gold cyanide for adsorption. They also have a lower solubility in water, which enhances adsorption. The tricyanide copper complex and the tetracyanide copper complex are water soluble and have an affinity for loading adsorption on activated carbon that is less than the affinity of gold cyanide for loading adsorption1. There are three prime reasons for this phenomenon. First, the extra cyanides mask the metal ion more, which blocks the main adsorption characteristic of the complex. Second, the complexes are also larger, making it harder to physically fit into the active sites on the carbon. This helps make the latter two complexes kinetically inhibited from adsorption, freeing carbon active site to load with gold cyanide complexes. Third, it is also important to consider the expressions of the mass and charge balance. These balances describe all the overall concentration of copper and cyanide in solution, as well as marking overall charges of the ions in solution4. This is important because significantly changing the charge from positive/neutral to more negative is another reason for activated carbon to reject adsorbing the higher cyanide complexes. The speciation of copper and other penalty metal cyanide complexes in solution is dependent on the pH. At lower pH values, increased hydrogen ions (H+) can out-compete metals for cyanide ions. Lower free cyanide in the system leads to the lower cyanide species of copper cyanide predominating, with a noticeable concentration of the free metal, monocyanide and dicyanide species of copper cyanide. At higher pH values, hydrogen ions are significantly reduced, reducing the kinetics of HCN formation. More free cyanide remains in the system, allowing for more complexing. With this higher amount of cyanide in the system, the tetracyanide species of copper cyanide predominates, also with a noticeable concentration of the tricyanide species of copper cyanide. The new Los Angeles, California JWPCP effluent outfall tunnel will transport secondary-treated effluent from the Joint Water Pollution Control Plant in Carson to White Point Manifold. The tunnel will be approximately 7 miles (11 km) long with a finished internal diameter of 18 ft (5.5 m). The TBM is designed to cope with high water pressure up to 10 bar. The geotechnical challenges are due to the heterogeneous subsurface conditions: in the first half of the alignment, the tunnel runs through soils with a low overburden under urban areas, and, in the second half, the tunnel runs through extremely weak, intensely faulted rock masses with high overburden. Following an overview of the project, this paper focuses on the northern portion of the alignment and presents a decision-making procedure developed during pre-excavation phase in order to cope with the expected heterogeneous conditions during mining. The risk assessment and the TBM operational design of the southern portion will be dealt with in a future paper.

The 20th Century saw the modern mining industry enriched by one outstanding method of extracting of mineral resources called Borehole Mining (BHM). Mean while, despite its successful track record in wide ranging locales, few specialists are yet aware of this technology. The intent of this article is to introduce borehole mining to a wider spectrum of drilling and mining professionals. The BHM method is based on in-situ water jet cutting of rock mass. On Fig. 1 the schematic of the method is presented. The borehole mining tool 1 is lowered into the borehole 2 and high pressure water 3 is pumped down. At the bottom part of the tool, one portion of that water comes out through the hydromonitor nozzle 4 in a shape of water jet 5 and cuts the material 6 creating slurry 7. The other portion of high pressure water then comes to the hydroelevator 8 (jet pump, eductor) which produces a vacuum. When the slurry reaches this vacuum zone, the eductor sucks the slurry and pumps it up to the surface, where rock parts are separated from water in a tank 9 or a pond and clarified water is pumped down again closing the re-circulating BHM water supply system. The borehole mining tool is suspended on a drill rig tower 10 which allows the tool to rotate and move vertically along the borehole axis. While extracting rock mass, underground caverns (stopes) 11 are created. If necessary, compressed air 12 can be injected to the raising slurry flow to create an airlift effect. Also, a secondary agent 13 (such as oil, foam, etc.) can be added to the stope through the gap between the tool and the casing. As seen from the illustration, BHM is the remote mining method of extracting of mineral resources through boreholes by high pressure water jets.

There is an ever-increasing need for quality construction materials to provide the necessary housing and transportation facilities required for the protection and movement of people and goods. By the year 2000, requirements for housing in the United States will have doubled due to population growth. Requirements for transportation facilities in this same period will also have increased substantially. Further, all existing facilities for both housing and transportation will require substantial maintenance of one form or another. Aggregate is the basic material of the construction industry. There is some occurrence of aggregate source material in virtually every state of the United States, and in every country in the world. United States reserves of commercially useable aggregate have never been systematically estimated and are probably so vast as to be incalculable.1 However, in many areas its existence is largely negated by inaccessibility. Often it is lodged deeply or intricately in the earth or it is too distant from markets to offer a desirable "return on investment" under the present economic structure. Other factors that prevent its utility are the occurrence of small scattered deposits that individually are too small to justify the necessary capital investment for exploitation and collectively are too widely disseminated; also, the aggregate nay be deficient in certain desired chemical or physical qualitites.1

Most tunnels built in Sydney encounter similar ground situations; they penetrate either the Hawkesbury Sandstone or the shales that lie beneath the city. Tunnels in these materials are generally sup-ported by rock bolts in combination with a shotcrete lining. A method of analysis is presented to improve our understanding of the long term behaviour of fiber reinforced shotcrete (FRS) materials and the tunnel support systems. A finite element method SAFEA (Semi-analytical FE Analysis) is developed to model the combined creep behaviour of a shotcrete lining and the Hawkesbury Sandstone. To model the time-dependent creep behaviour, the bulk modulus and shear modulus of the materials are represented by logarithmic functions in time. A Laplace transform is then applied to these functions of time and the solution of the problem found from a finite element analysis. Tablot?s method is then used to invert the transformed values and find the solution in real time. The time dependent creep deflection of the numerical tunnel models reflects the interaction of the shotcrete lining and rock which have different creep parameters.

Ontario has a diverse industrial mineral resource base including abundant resources of structural industrial minerals such as sand and gravel, crushed stone, building stone, clay, shale, limestone and dolostone. These resources are used in the production of aggregates, brick, metallurgical stone, fillers, lime, cement and other construction materials. The majority of the operations are in deposits of Paleozoic and Quaternary age in southern Ontario, close to the major markets. Province-wide, there were over 140 million metric tonnes of aggregates produced in 1985, approximately 115 million tonnes of which was produced in southern Ontario with the remainder being largely from Crown land in northern Ontario. The structural industrial minerals account for over 80% of the value of total industrial mineral production, with the remaining 20% of the value king accounted for by the non-structural minerals being led by salt which is produced in southwestern Ontario. A host of other non-structural industrial minerals are known but production is currently restricted to calcite, gypsum, quartz, talc, nepheline syenite and by-product metallurgical sulphur products (Fig. 1). Location and Market Area Major production is in the area closest to the large markets of urbanized southern Ontario and the northeastern and north-central United States. In general, with the abundant variety and widespread resources of industrial minerals and the large population within 400 miles of most deposits, the market offers great potential. Ontario's 9 million population accounts for about 35% of the entire gross domestic product of Canada of $476.361 billion dollars in 1985. This equates to about 113 of the nation's buying power being within a 200 km (125 miles) radius of Toronto. This major concentration of industrial and economic activity has resulted in a well developed industrial minerals industry fulfilling most of the structural industrial minerals demand in Ontario, as well as a subsidiary demand in neighbouring provinces and states.

The design of an underground mining operation requires the integration of transportation, ventilation, ground control, and mining methods to form a system which provides the highest possible degree of safety for mine personnel; the lowest cost per ton of product; the most suitable quality of final product, considering its intended use; the maximum percent recovery of the reserve, consistent with cost and subsidence rights; and the minimum disturbance to the environment. The selection of mining method is generally the controlling factor in overall mine design. Some important considerations in the choice of mining method are : 1) Depth of cover over the coal seam. 2) Strength and thickness of rock strata in the overburden. 3) Characteristics of the coal seam, including thickness, nature and location of impurities or irregularities, dip (or pitch), nature and direction of cleavage, hardness, and structural strength of the coal. 4) Nature and strength of the immediate roof (top) over the coal seam. 5) Nature and strength of the floor (bottom) under the coal seam. 6) Presence and amount of explosive gas (methane). 7) Quantity of water likely to be encountered in the mining operation. 8) Any previous or concurrent mining in seams above or below the coal seam to be worked. 9) Any restrictions on recovery required for subsidence control. Topographical and geological reports and maps of the area are usually available from state and federal geological surveys, and contain excellent general information to guide more detailed investigations. Exploratory drilling, and the plotting and analysis of the information thus obtained, are essential steps in any development program, and aid in the correlation and evaluation of information gained by other means. Other good sources of information are operating coal mines that may be in the same seam in nearby properties. Such mines may indicate in advance much about roof control, drainage, ventilation, and other mining problems.

One of the utmost severe mining catastrophes in underground hard rock mines is rock burst phenomena. It can lead to damage to mine openings and equipment as well as trigger accidents or even threat to life as well. Due to this, a number of researchers are forced to study some easy-to-use alternative methods to predict the rock burst occurrence. Nevertheless, due to the extremely multifaceted relation between mechanical, geological and geometric factors of the mines, the conventional prediction methods are not able to produce accurate results. With the expansion of machine learning methods, a revolution in the rock burst occurrence has become imaginable. In present study, three machine learning methods, namely XGBoost, decision tree and support vector machine, are utilized to predict the occurrence of rock burst in various underground projects. A total of 134 rock burst events were gathered together from various published literatures comprising maximum tangential stress (MTS), elastic energy index (EEI), uniaxial compressive strength and uniaxial tensile stress (UTS) that have been used to develop various machine learning models. The performance of machine learning methods is evaluated based on the accuracy, sensitivity and specificity of the rock burst prediction.
