With increasing cost pressure in the production costs of gold, there have been great efforts made to reduce the gold production costs as much as possible and a great deal of effort and lateral thinking is required to maintain a cost effective gold production facility. In a difficult economic environment, there is always the danger of saving in the wrong place. Just like it can be fatal to cut down on innovative research and development for long-term existence and sustainability in most industries, savings in safety and visionary planning of regulations expected in the future can become very costly on the long run, if preventative measures are not taken, observed or ignored. This paper deals with some current topics pertinent to the gold mining industry with regard to the interaction between potential risks, regulations and the costs that arise and can be saved in relation to these. Only an optimal combination of cost effective, safe and technically feasible regulations enable an operation to work economically.

The Randfontein Estates Gold Mining Company (Witwatersrand) Limited (REGM) operates three metallurgical complexes for the recovery of gold from the Witwatersrand Gold Reefs at the town of Randfontein, 40 kilometers west of Johannesburg. Mining operations in the. area commenced in March 1889 and ceased temporarily in 1965 when the viable ore reserves had been depleted. Exploratory drilling in the 1960's indicated viable deposits of gold in the Elsburg reefs, south of the Witpoortjie Horst Block, _which formed the Southern limit of the previously exploited areas. Three shaft complexes have been established to exploit this area, known as the Cooke secti'on. In 1983 the Doornkop shaft was sunk to the north of the Cooke section to mine Kimberley reef and the South reef.

Since the introduction of Peroxide Assisted Leach, PAL™, in the gold mining industry three years ago, seven plants in Australia and South Africa have successfully employed this process. Significant increases in the gold extraction rate are often accompanied by savings in cyanide. These applications are summarized in an overview which helps to define the requirements for a technically and economically successful PAL operation, based on mineralogical composition, operating parameters, and various design and plant features. PAL has a well-defined field of application which has to be differentiated from competitive oxygen leach techniques.

In order to reduce the heat loading in the Tilden Mine kilns caused by burning coal, which in turn resulted in rapid and significant build-upon the kiln lining, internal carbon was added to the green ball prior to balling. Intensive laboratory testing led to three short-term full-scale plant tests that were successfully conducted. Appropriate environmental permits were obtained to allow Tilden to use internal carbon on a continuous basis. Findings concerning carbon addition rates, reductions in coal use, build-up reductions, fired pellet quality, and environmental issues will be discussed.

Unlined water tunnels have often been used as pressure conduits for hydroelectric projects. However, fallouts of rock in such tunnels are not uncommon and in many cases have been attributed to erosion of shears and seams. A case history of such a fallout is described. An appraisal of the conditions pertaining to the fallout led to the conclusion that rapid changes in the water pressure in the tunnel resulting from operating conditions were significant factors in initiating the fallout. Other factors that contributed to the fallout are also described.

The current financial state of the mineral industry, in general, is bad. Economic prospects for improvements in the near future are uncertain. What will improve mineral investment economics so the mining industry can return to a more normal (in terms of past experience) production level? Basically, mineral commodity prices must rise. They must rise to economically justify reopening closed mines and for management to seriously consider expansion or development of existing and new mines. With the worldwide economy depressed for more than a year now (longer for most segments of the mineral industry), supply/demand relationships for mineral commodities are such that prices are depressed-except for precious metals. In investment analysis of the economic potential of existing or new investments in any industry, product price generally is one of the key parameters having great impact on the economic viability of projects. Petroleum and synfuels industry development contracted last year for the same product price reasons that have brought mineral industry development to a standstill. Much of the new mine development activity now underway or in the serious planning stages around the world involves precious metals ore body development simply because precious metal prices are high enough now or are projected to be high enough in future production years to give overall satisfactory project economics. It will take significant improvement in nonprecious metal mineral commodity prices in 1983 to develop significant new mine investment interest except in very high grade ore body special situations. Mineral Investment Decision Making Before progressing further with the discussion of mineral investment considerations for the coming year, it should be emphasized that mineral investment decision making-like all industry or individual investment decision making does not relate just to economic considerations. Investment decision making should and generally does involve three analyses: • Economic analysis • Financial analysis • Intangible analysis Economic analysis evaluates the relative economic merits of investment situations from a profitability viewpoint based on discounted cash flow analysis of projected investment revenues and costs. Financial analysis, on the other hand, refers to where and how the funds for proposed investments will be obtained. Regardless of the project's economic potential, if you can't finance it, the project will not be done. Intangible analysis considers factors affecting investments but which cannot be quantified easily in economic terms. Typical intangible factors are legal considerations, public opinion, goodwill, environmental and ecological impacts, and regulatory or political considerations, to name a few. New mine development investment decision making in the US has been impacted heavily by intangible considerations in the past decade and will probably continue to be impacted by them in 1983. There is a common tendency in literature and management practice to interchange the terms economic analysis and financial analysis. This often leads to confusion about the rationale for investment decisions. For example, in the past year a majority of companies in all types of industries cut back budgets for new projects. Often this was done not because new project economics were unsatisfactory, but because cash flow from existing operations was reduced compared to previous years due to the recession, and debt service requirements were high from existing loans so new borrowing was undesirable. For financial reasons, in other words, many projects were shelved last year. That included some precious metal mining projects and many petroleum projects. Many other projects were shelved for economic reasons (sometimes combined with financial reasons in the case of marginal economic projects). New mine development for copper, lead, zinc, molybdenum, iron ore, and synthetic fuels are a few examples. Economic Uncertainty and Financial Considerations Mineral project analysis has always involved a lot of uncertainty with respect to determining ore grades, tonnage of producible reserves, operating and capital cost projects, and mineral commodity prices estimates. The wide swings in mineral commodity prices in recent years and the almost impossible task of projecting future prices with any degree of confidence or accuracy concerns mineral project investment decision makers. In developing a new copper or silver mine, it is not today's price of copper or silver that is relevant to economic analysis of the mine, but what the price will be during the producing years. There is no way to avoid projecting the escalation (or de-escalation) effects on revenues and costs. To analyze a project in terms of today's dollar revenues and costs implicitly assumes that escalation will not change today's project costs and revenues; or that, if they do change, the project economics will be unaffected by the changes. The Haber Gold Process (HGP) is a proprietary. hydrometallurgical extraction methodology that was developed in 1983-1984 by Norman Haber and Dr. John Lee of Haber, Inc., a small public company in Towaco, New Jersey specializing in hydrochemical process development for precious metals. It was pilot tested repeatedly in 1985 at our pilot plant in Tombstone, Arizona, with different types of gold bearing mineralization. Both Pincock, Allen and Holt (USA), and PA Technology (Australia) were involved with some of these pilot tests. The ores tested included easily cyanide-extractable oxide type gold ore from Australia, marginal heap-leach type ore from Cripple Creek, USA, and a hematite bearing ore from California. In all cases, extraction time was 6 hours or less yielding 90-99% recoveries of assayed gold values. The HGP operates as a lixivient which parts the gold from the rock matrix, yielding gold in solution in a fully recoverable form. Both precipitation methods, such as zinc participation or Carbon in Leach systems ( or Carbon in Pulp) have been shown to be feasible with this technology for the recovery of gold from the pregnant solution. Both batch vat leaching as well as continuous processing are realistic for use with the HGP. It has also been considered that the HGP might also benefit heap leaching due to several advantageous factors over cyanide. One such consideration is that the HGP can operate effectively with acidic ore types. The use of cyanide with such ores often requires attention to pH and neutralization with lime. This tends to reduce and even clog the permeability of the leach bed.

The nascent marine mining sector appears to be now at a point of critical mass with the prospect of mining seafloor massive sulphide deposits at some time in the coming few years an inevitability. Julian Malnic makes comments from his experience base as an entrepreneur and founder of Nautilus Minerals Inc. in 1995 and will speak from an independent viewpoint of the commercial setting of the status quo of the proto-industry and the major factors likely to have major influence over its future. The presentation questions these factors and the role they will play. Do we need metals from the oceans? Understanding the competing and established terrestrial sources of each commodity is essential in comprehending how a marine competitor can profit. What are the rates of discovery for marine minerals? At what point will marine explorers start to impact the terrestrial copper and zinc exploration sector? The advance of technology is important in finding, imaging and mining SMS deposits, but which new technologies offer the advantage to mining in the ocean and which to mining on the land? Several competitors have now joined Nautilus as competitors to this global pioneer of SMS exploration/production. The membership of the major miners in the marine sector is growing steadily with important relationships developing but many have not put a toe in the water yet. A path of increasing width is opening to commercialization of SMS miners but crusts and nodules, as bearers of copper ? also found in SMS, and nickel ? also found in widespread nickel laterite deposits on land, are unlikely, in this perspective, to be winners this century unless highly valued minor metals are targeted.

I welcome this opportunity to give a Congressman's birdseye view of a subject which I believe holds great potential for the future in helping meet the needs of people, with minimal adverse impact on the environment. All mankind, not just the people in this great nation, faces the need for additional usable space. In some parts of the United States the problem arises from rapid urbanization of the surface and little utilization of the subsurface. Everywhere there is an increasing problem of insufficient space arising out of the increasing population crush and growing demands for open space, housing, water, transportation, communication, and social service. You are the technicians to whom we look for assistance in finding answers. We look to you also to provide guidance for broad policy decisions concerning underground space. I prepared for a career practicing law, but since 1952 I have been a member of the House of Representatives. In this latter capacity I deal with programs designed to help solve all kinds of problems. But, naturally, I am especially interested in the water scarcity and other environmental problems of my home state of Arizona and the arid and semi-arid areas in the West. This North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference has as its theme: "Tomorrow's Tunneling Technology Today." I have a very great interest in this potential of our underground space resource. The Central Arizona Project now getting underway in my state will consist in part of tunnels and underground pipelines to convey life-sustaining water from the Colorado River to people and lands across Arizona to the Phoenix and Tucson areas.

In an effort to minimize cutter roof failures in longwall development entries of a West Virginia coal mine, a three-entry system was developed with the center entry arched into the strata above the coal seam. The purpose of the arched entry was to modify the horizontal stress envelope associated with the three-entry system and improve roof conditions in the adjacent outside entries. Contrary to the predictions of elastic analyses, the presence of the arched entry improved roof conditions by eliminating cutter roof failures in the outside entries. In-situ stress determinations and numerical modeling techniques were employed to quantify the impact of the arch and investigate the mechanism of stress relief associated with the arched entry. Stress determinations and underground observations indicated that the roofs of the outside entries were within the zone of stress relief generated by the arch, and that failure or movement along bedding plane discontinuities played a major role in the formation of the stress relieved zone. The numerical model incorporated horizontal joints to simulate bedding plane discontinuities. The properties of the joints were adjusted until roof stresses predicted by the model were in agreement with measured stress profiles. This process resulted in a calibrated analytical tool that could be used to evaluate alternate mining geometries.

Mixing is a common unit operation in the mining industry. Mixers are often used in agitated leach, bio-oxidation, and pressure oxidation. In all of these cases it is important to understand the application and what it requires from a mixer in order to be opti­mized. In the mining industJy, it is obviously important to suspend solids. However, the shear level of each of these three applications is ve1y different. In acid leaching, the mixer needs to suspend solids and produce a good degree of blending. In pressure oxida­tion, the agitator must also disperse air or oxygen by creating fine bubbles. Because of the presence of microorganisms, bio-oxida­tion requires less shear than the other two processes, but the agita­tor must be able to suspend the solids, provide excellent blend­ing/heat tJ·ansfer and distribute the air. Thus, in the mining indus­tiy there is an application spectJ·um that requires different impellers to perfotm different jobs. Specifically, these jobs are blending, solids suspension, gas dispersion, mass transfer and heat transfer. It is important to determine whether the process is mass transfer or kinetic rate limited. Mixers affect a mass transfer limitation but have no affect on the kinetics.

The range of gold ores tested at AMMTEC LTD over several years has resulted in the requirement to analyse for the mode of occurrence of gold in order to assist selection of ore processing options. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. The range of ore and mineral assemblages described include relatively simple pyrite and free milling ores, more complex pyrite plus arsenopyrite gold ores and the quite com­plex associations of gold in copper bearing ores or with car­bonaceous mixed sulphide ore assemblages. The aim of this paper is to describe the laboratory testwork and analytical procedures which have been of benefit in detail­ing the mode of occurrence and mineral associations of gold and hence being of value in developing an optimised ore processing route. 1.1 Biological Process Description Pintail Systems, Inc. (PSI) has developed and in partnership with their clients in the mining industry has applied biological remediation processes for detoxification of spent ore and process solutions from heap leach operations. Contaminants that are treated to mine closure levels or drinking water standards include cyanides (weak acid dissociable and total cyanides), thiocyanate, nitrates and heavy metals. Biological processes are both site-specific and ore-specific processes. PSI specializes in isolating indigenous microorgan­isms from spent ore and process solutions and augments them in the laboratory for enhanced bio-detoxification in the field. Bioaugmentation in the lab is a key to successful heap bio-detox in the field. In PSI's bioaugmentation processes native microorganisms are isolated from the spent ore environment and are tested for contaminant remediation capacity. A majority of the indigenous microbes will be tolerant of the spent ore environment but will not contribute to contaminant metabolism. Indigenous enrichment or biostimulation of these non-working microbes by adding trace nutrients can competitively inhibit the working microbes. For this reason PSI focuses on the bioaugmentation process where non-working microbes are discarded and the working population is enhanced through stress, mutation and exogenous enrichment before it is re-introduced to the heap and process solutions.

Bacterial leaching is a mature technology and has been applied in six commercial plants with others in the design stage or under construction. Bacterial oxidation is a relatively inexpensive process which uses naturally occurring soil bacteria to assist in extraction of base and precious metals. Bacterial oxidation has ini­tially been applied for gold recovery but the technology is now being transferred to base metal leaching with processes already developed for copper, cobalt and nickel. Bacterial oxidation plants often have capital and operating cost advantages over competing technologies and do not need a highly skilled workforce. The most common species found in the conditions used for bacterial oxidation and bacterial leaching are Thiobacillus fer­rooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans. One common species other than Thiobaci!lus found in the commercial bacterial leach cultures is Leptospirillum ferrooxidans. Mixed cultures of the three species named here have formed the basis of the technolo­gy applied in most of the commercial applications of bacterial leaching to date. These bacterial species already mentioned all belong in the classification of mesophiles and have an operating range from 20 to 43°C. One other culture, a moderate thermophile operating over the range 40 to 50°C, has been used in one commercial plant in Western Australia. Bacterial oxidation takes place in acidic solutions under aer­obic conditions. The oxidation reaction normally produces iron (II) in solution which is ultimately conve1ted into the iron (III) form. The pH value falls naturally as the sulphide minerals are oxidised and the starting pH value can fall as low as pH 0.6 as the oxidation reaction proceeds. This paper examines the impact of the technology selection and its application on the design, engineering and operation of a bacterial oxidation plant. The effect of the changes to these para­meters on the cost of the bacterial oxidation plant is discussed.

Newmont Gold Company uses centralized carbon handling facilities to strip loaded carbon from five mills and four leach facilities located along a 38 mile stretch of the Carlin Trend in Nevada. Both Zadra and AARL elution processes are employed at this centralized facility which is located near the company's Gold Quarry operations. The Zadra elution circuit was commissioned in 1985 and later expanded in 1987. This circuit can strip carbon at a rate of 24 tons per day. The AARL elution circuit, commissioned in 1988, also has the capacity to strip 24 tons of carbon per day. Two horizontal, rotating, regeneration kilns are used to reactivate approximately 60% of the stripped carbon before it is returned to the mills or leach facilities. One kiln is located in the Zadra plant, while the other is located in the AARL plant.

Mercury contamination is a worldwide problem in the mining, smelting, and refining of gold, silver, and copper. In these areas, mercury may be found as a naturally-occurring material in ores and concentrates, and/or in secondary feedstocks such as leach residues, pyrometallurgical treatment residues, refinery by­products, electrowinning electrodes, autoclave discharge solids, and waste water and acid plant sludges. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated mercury one of the most harmful heavy metal contaminant in the environment and has implemented regulations that prohibit land disposal of characteristically hazardous wastes containing greater than 0.20 mg/1 TCLP mercury without prior treatment, thus increasing the cost of managing these materials. The presence of mercury in mine, smelter, and refinery by­products and wastes severely decreases, and in some cases eliminates, the ability to recover residual metal values from the contaminated material. The lost revenue associated with this disposal, combined with the increased direct cost of waste treatment, and/or disposal and protecting workers and the environment, can adversely affect overall profitability. The safe, efficient, and economical removal of mercury from gold, silver, and copper mining by-products requires a treatment process that is capable of liberating the mercury from the wide variety of compounds and matrices in which it may be contained, reducing the mercury content in the matrix to desired levels, and recovering the mercury in pure saleable form, without producing any secondary solid, liquid, or gaseous wastes. This paper reviews results from commercial operations and pilot scale tests using a thermal process owned and operated by Mercury Recovery Services, Inc. (MRS) to remove and recover mercury from copper acid plant blowdown sludge, Merrill­Crowe precipitate from gold/silver mining operations, and Cottrell and salt slag dusts from a precious metals refinery.

The design or optimization of a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant requires the determination and setting of a number of parameters to ensure optimum economic performance. A number of these parameters are either fixed, a function of the pulp, interdepen­dent, affect other parameters or outputs, so only a limited number of degrees of freedom exist from a metallurgical point of view. The traditional CIP contactor employs a low carbon concen­tration, a low agitation intensity and a reasonably long pulp residence time. The pump cell contactor employs a high carbon concentration, a high agitation intensity and a reasonably short pulp residence time. The two philosophies are dipolar in nature and the question arises as to which configuration is the optimum configuration for a CIP plant. The carbon particle size is shown to have a small effect on the capital cost of a CIP plant. A decrease in the pulp residence time, an increase in the pulp density, an increase in the carbon residence time, an increase in the agitation intensity and an increase in the number of stages are shown to have a positive effect on the capital cost of a CIP plant. The pulp residence time, the pulp density and carbon particle size are shown to have a small effect on the operating cost of a CIP plant. An increase in the carbon residence time, a decrease in the agitation intensity and an increase in the number of stages are shown to have a positive effect on the operating cost of a CIP plant. The optimum CIP plant, therefore, employs a short pulp residence time, the traditional pulp density, a long carbon residence time, the traditional carbon particle size, the traditional agitation intensity, and the traditional number of stages. Neither the pump cell configuration nor the traditional CIP configurations match the optimum configuration.

A considerable body of literature directed towards optimising the efficiency of gold and silver extraction from cyanide leach liquors has appeared in recent years. A few examples from dissolution to solvent extraction to adsorption in carbon-in-pulp (CIP) and resin-in-pulp (RIP) operations follow. Selective leaching of gold from copper-gold ores using ammonia-cyanide mixtures extends the % copper which may be tolerated in ores (Ruane, 1991, LaBrooy et al., 1991, Costello, 1991). The removal of copper and recycling of cyanide from high copper ores is another important development (Sceresini and Staunton, 1991). Solvent extraction of alkaline cyanide liquors (Riveros, 1990, Mooiman & Miller, 1991) and solvent aided elution in CIP (Muir, et al., 1985) look promising. Recent definitive papers on the mechanism of adsorption of aurocyanide by activated carbon should lead to more efficient use of CIP (Adams and Fleming, 1989, Klauber, 1991). Strong and mixed weak-strong base resins have been applied in RIP for aurocyanide extraction in Russian Plants since the 1970's (see for example Borovskii et al., 1985, and references cited in Fleming, 1988a). Fundamental studies on applications of commercial weak and strong base resins-in-pulp (Fleming & Cromberge, 1984a, b, Fleming 1988a, Hosking 1984, Riveros and Cooper 1987) have generated much interest in RIP. Detailed comparisons of CIP vs RIP efficiencies at Mintek in South Africa (Fleming et al., 1988b), and the inefficiency of CIP in contact with clay led to the commissioning of the strong base RIP Golden Jubilee plant in 1988. Its operation and improvements have been reported (Seymore and Fleming, 1989, Fleming & Seymore, 1990). The use of anion exchange membranes for aurocyanide extraction shows some promise (Mauthoor et al., 1991). However, the development of new gold specific resins at Mintek (Green et al., 1984, 1986, 1990, Johns and Green, 1991) and elsewhere (Asker et al., 1987, Wilson et al., 1987, Harris et al., 1992) should improve the viability of RIP processes. The polydiallylamine gold specific resins (Hodgkin & Eibl, 1988, Fawell et al., 1992a, b) have high capacities for auro cyanide recovery from high concentration liquors. The use of guanidine based liquid and solid ion exchange extractants for gold was recently reported by the Henkel Corporation (Kordosky., et. al., 1993). Such specific resins tailor made for gold and/or silver cyanide extraction should lower overall cost by improving metallurgical efficiency. In the case of strong base resins this selectivity largely eliminates the problems of poor base metal elution and/or poisoning. The work reported here outlines the approach taken at the University of Central Queensland to synthesize sterically hindered strong base anion exchange resins which are designed to have high selectivity for auro- and argentocyanide complexes. It summarises selectivity tests on low grade cyanide leach liquors from several mines. It also examines an RIP vs CIP comparison, and investigates the elution properties and cycling of one such promising resin.

Introduction Only a person fresh from an information vacuum could not know the status of this nation's economy. The inability of the US to compete in the world marketplace is manifested in many industries, from shoes to computer chips, from cars to copper. What industry will next fall prey to world competition? Perhaps the question should be, what insustry will next fall prey to declining productivity? American industry is being forced into an era where the focus must be on productivity, quality, cost control, and competition in the world marketplace. It is approaching a change that could rival the American Industrial Revolution. The future of the US is bright only if it can increase productivity by trying different and new ways to manage its businesses and people. Unlike the easy successes during the 60s and 70s, success in the decades ahead will depend on an ability to compete in the world market. Any operation can achieve unlimited productivity by developing the resources within its employees. As an industry, mining has harvested the earth's resources. As an industry in trouble, it now has to learn to tap human resources to release the energy and creativity in each person. Recently, I worked with a mining operation to reopen a mine and implement a different management approach. The extensive changes resulted in a 50% reduction in cash cost of producing silver (from $0.40 to $0.19/g or from $12.50 to $6 per oz). Thus, an unprofitable mine became an attractive business venture without technological changes or significant capital infusion. The operation is union-free, in spite of being in a highly unionized area. The mine implemented a real productivity improvement process called "gain-sharing." Employees now recognize their individual success is tied to the success of the business. They recognize the day of the free lunch is over for mining employees. This paper will explore three areas related to productivity: • some of the unspoken "whys" of the mining industry's paralysis and how management has caused unproductiveness in mining operations; • major components of a productivity improvement process; and • characteristics common to companies with successful productivity plans. Unspoken whys When things go wrong, everyone tends to point a finger at someone, anyone. This industry has blamed every conceivable person, corporate group, government agency, foreign government, and private group for its failures. The fault finger will not work anymore. Nobody is listening. It is a characteristic of winners in management to assume responsibility for less than acceptable performance. Excellent people tend to blame others less for problems. Everyone involved in mining should shoulder part of the blame for the industry's illness. Is the problem low prices or our high operating costs? To regain our status in the world marketplace and increase our productivity, we need to painfully and honestly talk about our mistakes.

In 1994, Goldstrike initiated a research program to investigate processing options for treating what was then the small amount of carbonaceous ore identified in the reserves. The focus of the research was on developing a process which incorporated the autoclave technology already utilized at Goldstrike. Over the next two years, Barrick pursued the development of an ammonium thiosulfate leaching (ATS) process. During the period in which the ATS research was being conducted the amount of carbonaceous ore in Goldstrike's reserves increased substantially and continued growth was projected. By 1996, significant advancement was made on the development of the ATS process. The work culminated in a series of integrated pilot plant runs incorporating autoclaving, ATS leaching, resin in leach, stripping and cementation. Several questions about the process chemistry remained unanswered, preventing commercial development. Barrick was committed to producing gold from the carbonaceous ore reserves by 2000. A due diligence review of carbonaceous ore processing options was initiated during the second half of 1996. Processes considered in addition to ATS were fine grinding/autoclaving, as practiced then by Santa Fe, and whole ore roasting as practiced by Independence Mining and Newmont. The objective by year-end was to recommend the most robust and economical process for Goldstrike's carbonaceous resources. In the fall of 1996, a detailed review of roasting as a processing alternative for Goldstrike was initiated. Throughout the ATS development period, whole ore roasting was used as the benchmark. All the ATS metallurgical and financial results were compared to roasting bench top test results. It was clear this data was too imprecise for use in due diligence study, a more definitive recovery value was needed to complete the carbonaceous ore review. The primary goal of the roasting review was to conduct pilot plant roast tests to gain a more thorough understanding of Goldstrike's carbonaceous ore's response to roasting and its effects on gold recovery. Using the test facility at Hazen Research, four pilot plant campaigns were conducted to determine optimum roast conditions and further define metallurgical design parameters. Conventional two-stage fluid bed technology based on Freeport­McMoRan's roasting patent was the specific process basis for testing. The ore's response to roasting exceeded expectations. In January 1997, a preliminary economic evaluation comparing ATS and roasting was presented, and the outcome was approval to proceed with a roasting prefeasibility study. In July 1997, approval for Goldstrike's Roaster facility was received and basic engineering started immediately thereafter. Detailed engineering _began in January 1998 and plant construction commenced in October 1998,t, Goldstrike's Roaster facility is designed to treat 12,000 tpd of a refractory gold ore, which contains both pyrite and organic carbon. Circuits in the facility include primary and secondary crushing, dry grinding, roasting, gas handling, neutralization, thickening and standard CIL. Gold desorbtion and recovery is carried out at Goldstrike's existing refinery. Plant start-up of the first dry grinding and roasting train is scheduled for March 2000, with the second train coming online in May 2000.
