Faults, sandstone channels, and abandoned mine workings present severe safety hazards, disrupt mining, and necessitate costly precautions or discontinuance of operations. In addition to fault detection, mining companies have a need to map discontinuities such as seam thinning and previously mined areas in both longwall and room-and-pillar operations. Initial field tests demonstrated successful generation and propagation of higher order guided wave modes. Theoretical studies indicate potential for improved resolution by sensing small details in the coal seam and roof structure. Controlled-waveform source transducers and specialized detectors are particularly useful to preferentially excite and detect the Love (SH) and Rayleigh-type (P-SV) waves, including the higher frequency modes. The distinct observation of reflections using the transducers in the shear wave mode makes feasible the detection of the water-filled voids.

Mining has one of the highest annual average fatality rates among major US industries. Health and safety dangers have been inherent to mining since the early days of picks and shovels. Even though miners’ health and safety has improved over the years, mining is still one of the most dangerous occupations. Mining was traditionally a low tech industry. It is now driven by competitive pressures to go high-tech by using programmable electronics (PE) for machine control, atmospheric monitoring and material processing. The industry’s experience with the functional safety of PE is limited compared with other industries. Thus, PE is an emerging technology for mining that can potentially create or worsen hazards.

A small area in the Alabama Piedmont was studied to determine if metallic enrichment was associated with local magnetic anomalies. Cores from two holes in these magnetic anomalous areas have sulfide (pyrite, pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite) film on slicken-side and fracture surfaces. Two hundred and fifty soil samples were collected from the top of the "B" horizon on 1, 000 foot centers over the general trend of magnetic anomalies. Soil samples were leached with a 1:2. 7 mixture of HF and H2SO4 and the dilute filtrate analyzed for Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Co, Cr, Mo, and Cd, using atomic absorption methods. Concentration-value maps were prepared for each element. Small areas of anomalous concentrations were defined for Cu, Pb, Zn, Mo, and Ni. Some of these areas generally coincides with magnetic anomalies. Concentration values (ppm) range from: Cu 165.0 - 0. 5; Pb 265. 0 - 0.0; Zn 1386.0 - 43. 0; Ni 187.0 - 10.0; Co 207.0 - 6. 5; Cr 117.5 - 2.0; Mo 95.0 - 0.0; and Cd 32. 5 - 2.0. Studies of other magnetic anomalies appear warranted.

The uranium industry has made a dramatic turnaround in the past three years that even the most optimistic economist was not willing to predict during the uranium downswing of the 1990s. Uranium reached a 30-year low in February 2001 of $6.50/lb. By the end of February 2006 it had soared to $38.50/pound. This nearly 600% increase in the uranium spot price within 4 years dwarfed the increase in gold price that has barely mustered a 100% increase. The initial slow rise from $6.50 in February 2001 to $10.75 in April 2003 (fig. 1) was primarily driven by the decrease in the value of the dollar. Since then several factors have contributed to the soaring price: (1) The awakening of many to the simple fact that uranium supply has not met demand for several years and that the world’s stockpiles are being drawn down, (2) How sharply this fragile supply can be impacted by disasters at the world’s major uranium production facilities, such as a) the flooding of the McArthur River Mine in the spring of 2003, b) fires at Olympic Dam, c) the potential that Rossing, with an annual capacity of 4000 tonnes uranium might close by 2007, (3) the withdrawal of Tenex from the HEU (highly enriched uranium) feed agreement, and (4) the announcement by the Chinese of their intent to build 30 new nuclear reactors.

Gold ores containing high levels of cyanide-leachable copper minerals, such as covellite, chalcocite, bornite, malachite, azurite, and cuprite have traditionally been difficult to treat economically. A novel hydrometallurgical process for efficient treatment of cyanidation effluents obtained by leaching high copper gold ores (or concentrates) based on the use of Cherokee Chemical organo-sulfur reagents (OSR-A, OSR-B and OSR-C) is described. The process may be modified to selectively precipitate silver, or completely recover silver, copper and zinc, as well as regenerate significant amounts of cyanide. For example, data obtained demonstrate that 100 % of silver and zinc, and 98 % of copper were removed from the solution, while 80 % of cyanide was recovered. The treated barren solutions exhibit enhanced gold and silver leaching kinetics compared to the untreated controls.

The mining industry, like most other industries, has had a difficult couple of years. What are your thoughts on the industry?s direction in the next few years? I am bullish on our industry. There is no question in my mind that the quality of life we enjoy today is largely a result of our past successes in the minerals and mining sector. I am equally certain that the sustainability of that quality of life and the aspirations of the rest of the world to attain that same level of lifestyle will depend hugely on our future successes and will be the driver for our industry to continue to excel and prosper. Surely, there are going to be challenges along the way. These challenges are not only from the public, regulators and various governing bodies, but also from our industry?s own self regulating efforts. However, we have demonstrated throughout the past several decades that we have the capability to meet these challenges head on and come out ahead.

Arsenic (As) removal behavior from Changgoon mine tailings was investigated using Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (A. ferrooxidans) in well-controlled batch reactors by varying pulp density (0.5?4%, pH=1.8, temp=30oC), reaction initial pH (1.8?2.2, pulp density=0.5%, temp=30oC), and temperature (25?35oC, pulp density=0.5%, pH=1.8). The initial concentration of As in the mine tailings used for bioleaching tests was about 30000 ppm, and the size range of tailings used in this study was 63?74 µm. The reaction speed and initial cell concentration were fixed to 150 rpm and 107 cells/mL, respectively. To complement leaching experiments, pH, oxidation/reduction potential (ORP), and amount of ferrous/ferric ions in leachate were analyzed. Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction analyses were also conducted for the samples before and after leaching to see if any morphological and compositional changes in tailings took place during leaching process. The As leaching efficiency increased with decreasing pulp density, decreasing pH, and increasing temperature in the presence of A. ferrooxidans. Specifically, no significant change in As removal rate was observed when pulp density d 2% while the removal rate dramatically decreased at pulp density of 4%. Regarding pH effect, As removal rate was much more enhanced at lower pHs (i.e., 1.8 and 2.0) compared to pH 2.2. Increasing temperature was observed to tend to enhance As removal rate, showing about 20% enhanced leaching rate under 35oC compared to 25oC and 30oC at the elapsed time of 5 days. The results for As removal behavior at different conditions (i.e., pH, temperature, pulp density) were consistent with the change in pH, ORP, and ferric ion concentration in leachate, showing greater removal rate at the condition with lower pH, and higher ORP and ferric ion concentration in leachate. Furthermore, decreasing removal efficiency was likely in part due to the extent of the formation of by-product (i.e., jarosite) of ferric ions.

Over the last fifty years, the treatment of enargite concentrates has not received much attention primarily because of the availability of other clean concentrates suitable for processing with existing smelting and/or leaching technologies. As traditional copper ores have become scarcer, copper-arsenic ore deposits have garnered more interest. Arsenic release is a significant concern during the treatment of enargite by pyro or hydrometallurgical methods. Enargite is also very refractive in standard leaching procedures. Thus, economical treatment options for enargite concentrates are needed. Preliminary experiments have shown that the acid-bake leach process could be adapted and used for the treatment of enargite concentrates. In this study, low-temperature (100-400 ºC) sulfuric acid baking of an enargite concentrate followed by water-leaching has been evaluated. The results indicate the thermal transformation of enargite to copper sulfate during sulfuric acid baking, with most of the arsenic being released from the concentrate into the gas phase for baking at 400 ºC. The condition for maximum copper extraction (~100%) from the concentrate was found to be 400 ºC, sulfuric acid amount of 0.5 mL/g of concentrate, and 2 h baking time. Part of the arsenic was captured in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS). XRD analysis proved the presence of some arsenic in the form of claudetite (As2O3) in the baked concentrate. Acid baking of pure enargite behaved in similar fashion.

This paper provides estimates of large-scale temperature gradients that can be used to support modeling of natural convection and cold-trap processes in thermally perturbed drifts. Temperature influences estimates of the quantity and chemistry of water contacting engineered components (e.g., drip shields and waste packages) in a potential high-level waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Temperature gradients drive natural convection and cold-trap processes, which could affect the distribution, quantity, and chemistry of liquid-phase water contacting drip shields (waste packages).The confluence of high temperatures, liquid-phase water, and high chloride may lead to corrosion of drip shields and waste packages. An overview of the evolution of environmental conditions in thermally perturbed drifts is presented to provide a context for the estimates of temperature gradients. A mountain-scale conduction-only model is used to estimate temperature gradients and temperature differences for a drift located at the center of a potential repository. Thermohydrologic models and heat transfer algorithms are used to evaluate the reasonableness of the conduction-only results. Estimates of temperature using an in-drift heat transfer algorithm account for the possibility of drift degradation and formation of a rubble pile on the drip shield. Temperature differences between the center and ends of the drift are estimated to rapidly increase to 80 °C soon after repository closure. That temperature difference decreases over time to 15 °C after 10,000 years. Local temperature gradients are generally estimated to be less than 0.2°C/m, though the gradients can be much larger near changes in lithology and near the end of the drift. The estimates of temperature gradients do not account for intermediate- and small-scale variations, such as those influenced by differences in heat loads between waste packages, intra-layer variations in thermal properties of the surrounding fractured rock, or localized drift degradation.

This 1988 survey provided a cross section of computer software use by the US coal industry. From 1250 mailed questionnaires, 171 responses were received, representing a 4.9% sampling of the 3496 US coal mines. Since the distribution of responses by regional stratum matched well with the distribution of mines by stratum, the survey was given statistical validity. A statistical description details the computer use by region, mining type, organizational size, the level of application within the organization, the type of software application used, the variety of computers on which the software was used and the percent of users within engineering, management and general applications categories. Overall, 63.5% of the respondents use computers at some level in their organizations. All of the mines producing more than 454 kt/a (500,000 stpy) used computers. However, for those producing more than 9 kt/a (10,000 stpy) but less than 91 kt/a (100,000stpy), only 44% used computers. Generally, the software applications were still data-processing oriented. The application sophistication grew with increasing mine size. Computer system models and configurations for different sized organizations are recommended based on the configurations used in the industry at the time of the survey.

INTRODUCTION There has been considerable discussion in recent years of the strained relations between owners, engineers and contractors caused by the rapid increase in costly litigation in underground excavation due to construction claims. These time consuming claims are not to the best interests of the industry. It has been a conclusion of some of the concerned parties that there could be a substantial reduction in these claims if a mutual respect for each other's roles could be maintained along with a practical contractual arrangement for sharing the risks of the unforeseen costs inherent in the business. This paper will touch on the overall problem of these relationships, but confine the major discussion to the role of geology in claims and, in particular, changed conditions claims, since they form the base for the bulk of those involving geology. Geologists can make a major contribution to the reduction of these claims if their particular abilities are recognized and used properly. CLAIMS AND GEOLOGICAL RISKS The tunnel contractor is strictly bound by the contract he signs, and the risks he assumes thereby must be priced. The most important variable factor on which he must base his price is the geologic data provided and his interpretation of it. Pennsylvania has ample reserves of high-alumina clays which are potential sources of alumina, but many of these clays contain large amounts of iron, which makes them unsuitable for treatment by acid processes(1). The purpose of this investigation was to determine the optimum conditions for the selective hydrochloric acid leaching of iron (2-4) prior to the sulfuric acid extraction of alumina from Pennsylvania ferruginous high-alumina clays. This was accomplished by first testing the iron-bearing minerals and the clay minerals most often encountered in Pennsylvania clays to determine their rate of dissolution in hydrochloric acid solutions. The results of individual minerals were then based for leaching Pennsylvania clays with a 19% hydrochloric acid solution at the boiling point of the acid for approximately 30 minutes to achieve as high as 90% iron removal and only 2-5% alumina losses.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to evaluate the effect of ventilation on the performance of automatic sprinkler systems in extinguishing wood crib fires. Experiments were conducted at airflows of 0, 0.76, 1.5, 2.5, and 4.1 m/s. Two experiments were conducted at each airflow, using 74° C fast response pendent sprinklers in one experiment and 74° C fast response horizontal sidewall sprinklers in the other experiment. In the experiments at airflows of 0 and 0.76 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 m upstream and downstream of the fire. The sprinkler directly above the fire was the only sprinkler to operate with no discernible difference in the suppression capability of the pendent and horizontal sidewall sprinklers. In the experiments at airflows of 1.5 and 2.5 m/s, sprinklers were located directly above the fire and 2.4 and 4.8 m downstream of the fire. The sprinkler located 2.4 m downstream was the only sprinkler to operate with the horizontal sidewall sprinkler being more effective in extinguishing the wood crib fire. The average response times of the sprinklers at airflows of 0.76, 1.5, and 2.5 m/s were 3-1/2 times the average response time of the sprinklers at 0 m/s. The results of this study will help enhance the safety of the nation's miners.

A study was undertaken to evaluate the thermal environment and determine the contributing heat sources within the existing 153 Orebody of Coleman/McCreedy East Mine which would then enable the prediction of the climatic conditions in the mine?s future 170 Orebody. The study entailed continuously monitoring, for a 2-week period, the dry-bulb temperature, humidity and barometric pressure along the existing intake airways from surface down to the 4810 Level and throughout an active mining area on that level. Furthermore, the mining activities and associated equipment that could be responsible for any changes in the temperature and humidity conditions within this mining area were also monitored. These data were then used to develop and validate a climatic simulation of the mine?s mechanized cut and fill mining method. This climatic model was then transposed to the future 5700 Level in the deeper 170 Orebody, to determine the environmental conditions within its production workings and along the main haulage route ascending from that area. Based upon the simulations performed it was shown that the level of ventilation planned for the new orebody should be able to maintain adequate environmental conditions. However, this study did emphasize the importance of the appropriate distribution of airflow in workplaces that used auxiliary ventilation in order to sustain a suitable thermal environment.

New approaches that increase hydrometallurgical recovery from refractory minerals in below-mill-cut-off-grade sulfide copper ore can add significant value, improve profitability and increase ore reserves. This paper describes the development and implementation of an engineered heap (EH) approach to leaching low-grade, chalcopyrite-bearing ore at Freeport-McMoRan?s mine in Morenci, Arizona. The technical evolution of the engineered heap concept is described together with the challenges and benefits following implementation.

This paper presents research results on assessment of environmental impact of digging and loading equipment in surface coal mining. Environmental impact is accessed through the equipment exhaust and dust emissions, and sound level. Exhaust emission is related to carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur oxides (SOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Dust generation is expressed through the particulate matter PM10 and total suspended particulate matter (TSP), while sound is presented through the sound pressure level. Modeling of environmental impact of digging and loading equipment is conducted in Microsoft Visual Studio.NET software package. This research is a part of a boarder project on development of software system for the selection of productive, cost-efficient and eco-friendly mining systems, which is sponsored by the Appalachian Research Initiatives for Environmental Sciences (ARIES). The research work presented here may be used by mining professionals to aid in quantifying environmental impact of digging and loading equipment and determinate strategies for reducing its overall impact.

The East Central Interceptor Sewer, commonly known as the ECIS Project, is the largest public works construction project awarded by the City of Los Angeles. The complexity of this $240 million project, together with the challenge created by the mandated 1,000 calendar days for construction completion, make this project a major interest for the tunneling industry. This paper will describe the ECIS tunnel project, currently under construction by the Joint Venture of Kenny (Sponsor) / Shea / Traylor / Frontier-Kemper. Mining of the18.5 km (about 11 miles) long and 4.7 m (15ft-4in) diameter tunnel is underway with four Tunnel Boring Machines mining at the same time. Details on the mining machines, muck handling systems, innovative construction sequence, together with mining progress will be given.

In this decade of the 1.970's it is forecast that eight billion cubic yards of rock will be excavated from 400, 000 miles of new tunnels, drifts and other underground workings in the western world, according to estimates in a report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is expected that the cost of this work will be in excess of $54 billion in constant 1970 dollars. Most of this underground excavation will be in mining -- 97% of the tunnel length and 89% of the volume - -the balance in construction. In addition to this huge excavating task, in the 18 developed nations of OECD, will be projects in the Communist Bloc and in the developing nations. Underground excavation requires the successful completion of three principle activities: A. Break -- to free rock from the solid work face. B. Remove-- to clear the work area of broken rock. C. Support -- to assure stability of rock surrounding the underground excavation and to eliminate risk of rock collapse. In today's fully mechanized excavation systems, continuous miners, roadheaders or tunnel borers, (A) break the rock loose from the face, and (B) remove broken rock with their mucking devices and load it onto belt conveyors, mine cars, trucks, or any other appropriate haulage system for disposal. "Any economic calculation with respect to potential submarine mining activities requires reliable analytical data on the contents of valuable metals in these ores, including trace metals such as rare earth elements as well as Ti, Mo, V, Zr and Li. Due to the very special matrix of ferromanganese nodules (30% manganese oxides, 10-20% iron oxides, silicates; see Kuhn et al., this volume), their geochemical analyses pose a real challenge. Available ferromanganese nodules reference materials, e.g., NOD-P1 and A1, JMn-1, GBW07249, SDO-4 to -7 and NM2388, generally have only a few certified values for trace elements. Published data for these reference materials, collected in the GeoReM database (http://georem.mpch-mainz.gwdg.de/) are either rare for high technology metals or widely scattered for certain elements, especially the PGEs. Since most of these materials were released in the 1990s, many analytical procedures have seen significant advancement.In order to facilitate analytical quality assurance during exploration and potential future mining activities, the German Federal Institute of Geosciences and Mineral Resources (BGR) has contracted the Central Geological Laboratory of Mongolia (CGL) to produce a certified reference material for nodule analytics. Certified reference materials provide the highest level of reliability in geo-analytical measurements currently available and the CGL has a long-term experience in producing geological reference materials. Recently, the CGL was accredited as a reference material producer according to ISO Guide 34 by the American organization ACLASS (Assured Calibration and Laboratory Accreditation Select Services). Furthermore, it has been accredited as a testing laboratory according to ISO 17025."

Recent accidents in the United States underground Coal Mines and the on-going carnage in Underground Chinese Coal Mines has shown the danger associated with the lack of communication infrastructures in an underground environment. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) have introduced legislation that states all Underground Coal Mines must have two-way voice and personnel tracking capabilities by 2009. If Coal Mining companies are being forced to deal with this problem Tunneling Companies will not be far behind. This paper will examine current practices and best case technology to deal with these issues.
