Santa Fe Pacific Gold Corp. conducted pressure-oxidation pilot plant studies on refractory carbonaceous gold ores from the Twin Creeks Mine in Nevada. The tests were conducted at Hazen Research Inc., Golden, CO, during 1993 and 1994. Laboratory investigations using CIL cyanidation after batch pressure oxidation demonstrated gold recoveries of 90% to 95%. However, pilot plant testing showed that several of the same ore types responded very poorly, with gold extractions of only 45% to 75%. Plant testing was suspended for approximately four months while extensive research was conducted to determine why these ores responded poorly and to identify potential solutions. This paper describes the batch and pilot plant test results, the extensive research activities that eventually identified the cause of the gold recovery problem and the final semicontinuous and continuous pilot plant operations that confirmed possible solutions. Final pilot plant results showed gold recoveries that were consistently greater than 90%.

With the utilization of most of the "high dam" sites for hydro-electric power and the completion of most railroad routes, many tunnel contractors were extremely doubtful that tunnel driving would continue to be an important element of heavy contracting. Experience has proved otherwise. The ever-increasing need for rapid transit and for pollution control have generated, and will continue for the indefinite future to generate, a very high level of tunneling activity. At the same time, the costs of construction have traveled an upward curve in the tunnel industry, as in all other types of construction. As a result, Owners, Engineers and Contractors have sought ways and means of constructing more economically through the development and use of labor-saving devices and techniques. The development of mining machines and lasers has contributed tremendously to such economy. Before giving you a contractor's viewpoint on Owner-Engineer-Contractor relationships in tunneling, it may be well to provide some background as to matters which give rise to that viewpoint. Construction contractors in general, and tunnel contractors in particular, have always had to contend with the physical environment in which the work has to be accomplished. However, when a building contractor has constructed his foundation, and certainly after he has "closed in", he deals thereafter with known physical conditions, or at least with conditions which he could reasonably have estimated would occur. Except, perhaps, for the hazard as to earthquakes, he has cleared Nature's threats. A tunnel contractor, however, must give thought to what the physical environment may do to his job, each and every day that he is driving a tunnel. Explosions and fires are without a doubt two of the most feared occurrences in modern underground mines. When they result in loss of life or substantial property damage, they usually gain world-wide media attention and have, on occasion, provided the impetus for legislative action. The very involvement of the Federal Government in mining was the result of a series of explosions which resulted in the loss of hundreds of lives. Fortunately, explosions of this magnitude are rare. Fires and explosions of lesser consequence are, however, more common and their severity may be more a matter of luck than anything else. The publicity which these events receive is usually restricted to the area immediately surrounding the mine and a1 though MSHA and sometimes the state prepare reports of their investigations, the general mining community is quite often aware of the circumstances surrounding these occurrences. This paper will discuss some of these "lesser" explosions which have occurred recently. These explosions have sometimes occurred in sealed or otherwise inaccessible areas of the mine involved, where conventional ignition sources such as electrical power were not present.

Dispute Review/Resolution Boards (DRB’s) are a highly successful dispute avoidance and resolution tool. In a joint effort between the UCA of SME and the Dispute Resolution Board Foundation (DRBF), the authors embarked on an informal assessment of the state of the DRB practice in the tunnel industry from the point of view of the Contractor, Owner, DRB Practitioner, and Attorney. The results of this assessment were presented in a panel discussion at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) in June of 2021. A roof bolting drilling operation in an underground coal mine can expose the operator to a high concentration of respirable coal and crystalline silica dusts (smaller than 10 µm). Overexposure of high-level quartz dust for a roof bolter operator can lead to the development of silicosis in as little as three years [1]. This study proposes a drilling control algorithm for the bolt hole drilling process. This algorithm can be integrated into a current drilling control system on the roof bolter machinery and is expected to reduce the generation of respirable dust while enhancing the energy efficiency of the roof bolter machine. In addition, the drilling efficiency and bit condition can be evaluated while drilling based on the real-time feedback parameters. This capability enables the algorithm to ensure the drilling is performed under a relatively high energy efficiency with less respirable dust generation and to avoid drilling with an excessively worn bit that can cause bit clogging or steel buckling failure.

Researchers at the U. S. Bureau of Mines have developed a control algorithm to efficiently manipulate chaotic systems. The control, based on both fuzzy logic and genetic algorithms, prescribes actions that drive the chaotic system to acceptable regions of state space. The use of fuzzy logic enables a person who has limited experience with a chaotic system to establish a set of rules for manipulating the problem environment, and a set of membership functions that define terms used in the rule-set. Genetic algorithms are search algorithms based on natural genetics, and are used in the control algorithm to select membership functions that provide for a suitable level of control. The Bureau-developed algorithm controls the computer simulation of a ball bouncing on an oscillating table, a system that exhibits chaotic behavior.

Since the 1981 record of 54 mm tons of US fertilizer consumption, grain surpluses in the US have brought about massive acreage reduction programs, decreased fertilizer consumption, and resulting price pressures caused by excess capacity. The strong US dollar that reduced export sales of both grain and fertilizer, and new offshore manufacturing capacity using US engineering/contracting know-how have combined to put US producers of phosphate fertilizers in uncompetitive postures. While recent events suggest the industry may be growing out of this capacity problem, the cost of US phosphates will continue to be disadvantaged by such external factors as taxes, environ- mental regulations, and high power costs. There is no reason to expect help from the government in the form of reduced environmental regulation and taxation. In order to survive, phosphate fertilizer producers will have to develop technologies and adopt strategies that result in world competitive production costs. Current responses to the need to reduce costs include reduced energy costs through cogeneration, innovative reclamation techniques that create valuable land, and in- creased raw material recovery achieved by operator proficiency. While new technology offers long-term benefits for the producer, present efforts are concentrated on more mundane management efforts to reduce costs. Major attention is being given to the problems of labor utilization and productivity. Raw materials suppliers are being asked to renegotiate contracts which more appropriately reflect conditions in an industry operating at about 50% of capacity. Achievements in these and other areas will allow the producers to continue operating until longer term benefits materialize. `

Making progress on sustainable development will require greater attention to the management of materials produced from mine exploration through use to reuse, recovery and recycling. Material stewardship is a concept that embodies the range of activities required for optimal and appropriate use of minerals and metals in society. The following paper provides an overview of some recent initiatives that promote the stewardship of minerals and metals in society. The initiatives described are being conducted by organisations ? the International Zinc Association, the Canadian Copper & Brass Development Association and the International Council on Mining & Metals. These associations illustrate stewardship activities at three different levels: - an international association representing companies that produce a range of minerals and metals; - an international commodity association; and - a regional association. For each initiative, information is presented on its development, scope and outlook. This paper draws heavily from work of the associations but the viewpoints are the responsibility of the authors.

The southern Powder River Basin (PRB) of Wyoming has developed into the largest coal producing region in the United States in the relatively short time span of 22 years. Since the opening of the first non-captive mine in the Basin in October 1972, truck/shovel fleets have played a major part in this rapid growth. In 1994, more than 200 trucks and 50 shovels will be used at 14 mines to help produce more than 190 Mt (210 million st) of coal in the southern PRB. This article presents an overview of the truck/ shovel operations in the Basin. Fleet sizes are reviewed, applications discussed, operating considerations explored, factors looked at that drive high capacity and restrictions listed for future growth. Fleet size Various sizes of trucks and shovels can be found in the southern PRB. However, a clear trend of increasingly larger size units is being established as producers attempt to remain competitive and productive.

The aim of this study is to present hazard classifications of location, type and causes of accidents in the Turkish coal-extracting industry using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). In this study, fatal mine accidents were analyzed by pairwise comparison and weighting, and the most important hazards were identified by determining the effective main and sub-criteria among location, type and causes of accidents. For this purpose, first-, second- and third-level hazards consisting of location, type and causes of accident were determined by using the data of fatal mine accidents in underground and openpit coal mining in Turkey between 2010 and 2020.

The spiraling rate in phosphate rock demand during the period 1957 to 1967 led producers to expect a continuation of a high growth rate. Consequently they expanded production capacity to meet the expected demand. Both the domestic and the world demand has shown little growth over the past three years. Florida producers operating at less than 75% of installed mining capacity, produce all that their markets will absorb. We expect that the nest few years will bring only a slight improvement in this condition. An increased demand in the domestic agricultural market will be partially offset by a continuing erosion in the export market.

Mine developers commonly undertake projects that require more funds than they can invest themselves. From that point until they are able to complete a "bankable" feasibility study, they require access to venture capital. In the United States, most venture capital has been provided to the small mining segment of the industry through tax advantaged limited partnerships. Recent changes in Federal tax law makes other forms of financing competitive, and the use of corporations and private and public offerings of shares may soon become more popular ways of securing venture capital. A number of new financial services firms have entered the mining finance business in recent years. They provide mine developers with access to venture capital.

INTRODUCTION When Palmer King asked me to prepare a paper for this conference, it seemed quite appropriate, since I am Chairman of Subcommittee No. 4 of the U. S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and we are presently making a detailed study of contracting practices. Before the end of this year, we expect to publish our report containing guidelines aimed at improving our contracting practices and minimizing the problems which develop therefrom. The American construction and mining industries today are glowing examples of the ingenuity of man pitting his wits against the unknown. Without the promise of rewards commensurate with the perils faced and the effort expended, it is doubtful that these industries could have reached their present state of advancement. Nevertheless, these industries are still primitive compared to many others such as aerospace and electronics. That our present contracting practices leave something to be desired is evidenced by the fact that many of our underground projects wind up with tremendous increases in estimated cost, financial disaster, and costly dispute and litigation. The situation is aggravated by the current economic uncertainty, energy crisis, and shortage of materials. At the same time, if our industries are to develop their maximum technologic potential, we must employ contracting practices which will encourage that development. [The site] [Z]irovski vrh uranium ore deposit is located in the extreme north-western part of Yugoslavia, some fourthy kilometers from the capital of Socialist Republic of Slovenia, Ljubljana, not far from the Italian and Austrian border. The sandstone type deposit of uranium ore with medium grade is located in a foothill of Julian Alps. The site shows some typical conditions for this region, which demand special attention in respect to the incorporation of an uranium treatment facility into environment. Among these specific conditions the following site characteristics should be mentioned: - populated area of agricultural and recreational value, - unconvenient climatic conditions with excessive rainfall and long lasting temperature inversions in the winter time, - very pure surface and underground waters which supply the drinking water reservate for large area including the capital of Slovenia, - sharp relief, - unconvenient geological structure. The choise of technology The intention to produce uranium and at the same time respecting the natural characteristics and existing uses of the site made the design of the ore treatment facility relatively difficult one. In general, there were two basic alternatives available perform the task. First alternative was to adopt the usual technological flowsheet with wet tailings disposal and with discharge of used water i.e. liquid effluents into the river. In order to prevent the negative impact of such technology on the sourrounding area sophisticated water purification installation and costly measures in wet tailings disposal e.g. impermeabilisation of large areas by concrete injections, large dam constructions, uncertain capturing of the water sources should be employed. Introduction Although, in general, the openings created in domes or diapiric type salt deposits during mining operations are larger than those created in bedded deposits, the openings in bedded salts are of significant lateral extent. Thus, this paper will deal primarily with the dome deposits of the Gulf Coast and more specifically with the Avery Island dome operated by the International Salt Company where recent development activities have materially increased the sizes of previously standard openings. Geology The geology of salt deposits is the governing factor in the rock mechanics associated with the opening which is being created in the salt. Bedded salts are customarily characterized by having experienced solution along the interface between the top of the salt and the overlying bed. Thus, as the salt slowly dissolves there has been left behind a layer of laminated insolubles which is often incompetent. In most cases, this incompetent rock must be supported by a thickness of bedded salt which is left in the roof as support. Where this salt is of secondary deposition (recrystallized halite) with included moisture, additional thicknesses of roof salt are necessary to achieve stability. The salt which forms the domes of the Gulf Coast regions is from the Louann formation of the Jurassic period. These formations are dipping toward the Gulf of Mexico so that the upper tier of domes which have formed across northern Louisiana in an east-west direction into Mississippi and Texas have a salt source some 10 to 15,000 feet

The principal impurities in some feldspar ores are titanium and iron, which impart color and degrade the quality of the ore. Mineralogical investigations indicate that, while titanium originates mainly from rutile with small amounts of sphene, iron originates mainly from mica minerals. Fatty acids, particularly oleic acid, are extensively used, with reasonable success, in the flotation of colored minerals from feldspar ores. In this study, potassium oleate, oleoyl sarcosine and hydroxamate were used to float colored impurities both before and after magnetic separation. Oleoyl sarcosine is found to exhibit better results compared to other reagents. Magnetic separation followed by flotation is found to produce a feldspar concentrate of superior grade.

Construction of the first phase of the Sao Paulo Metro, the North-South Line, will be completed late in 1974. The downtown section of this line consists of 2.2 miles of 19.6-foot diameter soft ground tunnels and 3 subway stations. The entire tunnel - station package was let to one contractor. A plan and profile of the tunnels and stations is shown on Figure 1. Passage of the tunnels under Boa Vista Street in the Sao Paulo Financial District was one of the major challenges. The street is only 50 feet wide from building line to building line and flanked by 10 to 20 story buildings. The tunnels pass within 4 feet of adjacent footings. Further south, the tunnels run 13 feet below the flat foundations of the Caixa Economica, a massive 11 to 14 story building. Surface settlement had to he limited to less than .07 feet/tunnel and good face control and grouting procedures were essential. For this reason, full face cutting wheel tunneling machines were selected to drive the tunnels south of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia which included Boa Vista Street and the Caixa Economica. The tunnels north of the Access Shaft Prestes Maia were driven under a fairly wide Avenue and greater settlements were permitted. Open face shields were selected to drive these tunnels. Most of the work has now been completed and analyzed. Introduction A study was completed that investigated the enrollment in mining engineering programs in 24 universities and colleges. All programs considered in the study award four-year bachelor of science degrees in mining engineering. They also provide all the engineers for the mining industry and a large portion of the geotechnical engineers working on environmental problems, storage of hazardous waste, civic, and Federal government underground projects. The numbers used as the base for the study are those reported by each program to SME-AIME and published yearly (SME, 1986). Data for the study came from the period 1975-1985. Also, since some programs include students in related disciplines and special categories, such as cooperative students, a few inaccuracies were unavoidable. A 23-page document has been prepared that reports on the overall picture of current enrollment, the trends, and discusses the results, perceived effects, and what can, or should, be done. There has been an obvious, and dramatic decrease in total undergraduate enrollment since the late 1970s. In 1978, 3117 students were enrolled. In the 1985 fall semester, enrollment was 1022, less than one-third. There were 485 seniors, 265 juniors, 147 sophomores, and 125 freshmen. The downward trend in total enrollment is likely to continue for at least another two years. Class size The catastrophic drop in enrollment is shared by all programs across the country. It does not discriminate between types of programs, coal or hard rock mining, or location. In general, 1985's enrollment is about 30% of whatever the maximum enrollment was in any program, though this varies from the teens to 50%. The latter percentage occurs only for some programs with special circumstances, particularly new programs not well established in the late 1970s. The beginning of the decline in enrollment has occurred at slightly different times as affected by the demise of each program's local industry. The numbers in each class produced from a specific freshmen year (Fig. 1) are worthy of comment. The dramatic drop in enrollment for all classes after 1982 is clearly demonstrated. The timing coincides with the general downturn in the mining industry, when many employed engineers were laid off and new graduates could not find jobs. Also, significantly fewer students are being attracted to mining programs as freshmen. The number of seniors shown seems inappropriate. Where did so many seniors come from and why are so few graduates produced? There is an increasing trend for students to take four-and-a-half or five years to graduate. Therefore, they are counted twice, once when they are first classed as seniors and again the following year. Some students purposely delay graduation to obtain more summer work experience and take additional courses. They believe that this gives them a better

Green mining is the latest technological advancement to reduce mining’s environmental impact with minimal energy and resource consumption. Green mining — aimed at protecting nature and providing socio-economic benefits — is a multifaceted network of its connotations and key indicators. China has not yet defined its connotation and formed an effective evaluation system for surface mining. We defined its connotation and developed an evaluation index system based on the theory of green grades. As the indicators are selected based on extensive research, they express the advantages and disadvantages of various aspects of a mine. The index is composed of three attributes (safety, efficiency and environment), nine criteria and 35 indicators. The indicators were quantified according to experts’ opinions using the fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method. The results of a case study show that the environment is the most critical aspect, followed by efficiency and safety. This study can provide technical support for the development of green mining.

Coal production in the in the Powder River Basin began its tremendous expansion during the boom of the mid-1970s. New mines were opened from 1976 through the early 1980s. This expansion soon placed Wyoming at the top of the list of coal producing states, where it has since remained. Mines are operated by large companies, with safety and production having equal priority. These mines have been some of the safest ever in the coal industry. Many Sentinels of Safety Awards have gone to them. Safety programs are varied, but there are commonalities. Mine safety at Wyodak Extra training is required of all supervisors. The company offers to pay for any additional first-aid training that employees participate in. Safety departments conduct weekly safety talks. All employees receive the monthly magazine Family Safety and Health compliments of Wyodak. Electricians receive extra training on electric wheel motors, from General Electric. Equipment operators receive extra training from Dresser.
