During drilling of deep boreholes, local mechanical failures of the wellbore walls may occur due to the inability of the incompetent overburden and reservoir rocks to withstand drilling-induced changes of the stress environment. At present, borehole failure mechanisms in three-dimensional stress fields are poorly understood. Our experimental investigations based on 3-D physical models demonstrate the stabilizing effect of the intermediate principal stress. The latter may play a dominant role in maintaining the integrity of the stress relieving failure zone around the borehole. However, this will depend on the stress anisotropy, the angle of hole deviation and on the angle of internal friction. Our tests also indicate that the failure zone can accomodate high extensional strains. Finally, relations between the physical models and closed-form elasto-plastic solutions are discussed.

The new OSH regulations concerning ground ward monitoring of underground coal mines has been the source of many concerns for the mining industry. Because the regulations were initially written at the federal level but are being administered at the state level, considerable confusion exists within the industry as to what is actually required. Based on the preparation and submission of over 30 monitoring plans for existing deep mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio, we now have a very good feel for the detail the monitoring plans, as well as the costs to im plement the plans. We do not, however, feel confident in our evaluations of the long-term impact the ground water monitoring regulations may have on the industry.

The Richmond Hill Mine has recently completed a reclamation plan to mitigate Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) which was identified at the toe of the former waste rock pile in 1992. Reclamation activities began in 1994 with the removal of ARD material from the waste rock pile and placement of this material in the former pit. This material was then isolated from the near surface environment by a low permeability capping system designed to minimize water and oxygen flow into the material. The capping system consists of, from bottom to top, six inches of limestone, 18 inches of low permeability clay liner, 4 and one-half feet of thermal barrier/drain layer, and six inches of topsoil. This capping system was completed in 1995. An extensive program is in place to monitor the effectiveness of the reclamation plan, and includes measurements on moisture content movement, temperature, oxygen content, and groundwater impacts. Monitoring has been ongoing since the completion of reclamation. This monitoring plan is demonstrating the success in isolating the material from the near surface environment and minimizing the impacts to the surrounding environment.

Since the first recorded discovery of lead in southeast Missouri near Fredericktown about 1720, knowledge of the deposits has advanced in spurts as a result of outlying discoveries: 1864 Bonne Terre 1890 Flat River, Desloge, Leadwood 1948 Indian Creek 1955 Viburnum The original discoveries at Bonne Terre consisted of residual galena in clay, similar to that in the previous finds at Fredericktown. Occurrences in solid dolomite were not noted until mining of the clay pits exposed the walls of the weathered depressions. The St. Joseph Lead Co. had been established to conduct the operations and it was J. Wyman Jones, first president of St. Joe, who at that time brought about the first of the technological advances that were to occur in the district. He proposed use of the newly invented diamond drill to explore the bedrock showings, after observing the machines in the Vermont Marble Belt.

A hydrogeologic investigation was conducted to predict inflow to underground mine workings and mining-induced hydrologic impacts for a proposed underground mine beneath a lake in northern Canada. Flow and shut-in tests were conducted to determine hydraulic conductivity values and to estimate the hydraulic head. A conceptual hydrogeologic model was developed and incorporated into a numerical ground-water flow model (utilizing MINEDW, a three-dimensional, finite-element code with special attributes designed for mine dewatering). The mining sequence was represented in detail(e.g., driving ramps and drifts, extracting panels, and backfilling mined areas). Due to limited field data, a quantitative assessment of uncertainty was implemented to estimate limits of possible inflows.

Gentlemen, I am pleased to address this gathering of engineers and operation managers representing a large and important segment of the metal and nonmetallic mining industry. Since you know from the printed program that the theme of my paper is the furthering of safety in open pit mines, perhaps you will have guessed that I will also comment upon the image created in the public mind by the industry's safety record and the potential consequences thereof in national health and safety legislation. Operators of surface mines have some cause to congratulate themselves on the basis of figures issued by the national safety council which show that lost-time accidents per-million-man-hours in surface mining (11.18), is lower than that of all other mining. Moreover, the accident frequency in surface mining is only slightly above the median accident rate for all American industry (8.87). That is a good record.

"This paper will share my ‘shift in career direction’ journey from corporate mine engineer, with 31 years of mining various commodities with a wide range of responsibilities in a variety of countries, to the world of academia. There are times in one’s career that a change is required, albeit perhaps not as drastic of a change as moving to teaching. This paper will share how the transition arose, the decision to make the change, the challenges of the first year in academia, and the journey within academia going into the second year. INTRODUCTION As a graduate of the Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology (Montana Tech) with a B.S. Mining Engineering degree in May of 1982, my first job with Utah International in the Farmington area took me back to my home state of New Mexico. Some of you will remember that the early 1980’s was not a period of prolific opportunities for mining engineers; given low commodity prices, especially for copper (for example, Anaconda Company had been taken over by Arco and was in the midst of closing down its Butte operations). Coal was good and the learning opportunities abounded with Utah (which became BHP and then BHP Billiton). Gold was taking off in the mid to late 1980’s thanks to use of cyanide and heap leaching technology improvements, coupled with deregulation of the gold price, so I ventured off to work in the gold industry with a (then) junior Canadian company called Barrick at a new acquisition of theirs known as Goldstrike. That same gold surge was causing a shortage of iron ore mining engineers in Australia so after a few years in Nevada, I uprooted the family and left for a little town in the Pilbara of West Australia, known as Newman, to work in the iron ore industry with BHP Iron Ore. An initial short overseas posting turned into six plus years before transferring to BHP’s Indonesian steam coal mines in Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. BHP was going through a rough period following some ill-fated projects (Magma copper purchase, Beanup and HBI) and was reviewing assets and staffing so internal opportunities became scarce. Employees were encouraged to ‘leave the company and find work elsewhere.’ So, off I go to Argentina to try copper mining in the Andes with Minera Alumbrera. This short stint in South America was followed by a move to another mining town, Morenci, Arizona, and a posting with Phelps Dodge (now Freeport McMoran). After 12+ years without living close to snow we moved to the Denver area in a new position with Newmont Mining Corporation. Along the way I became a Professional Engineer (Nevada) and completed a Masters in Project Engineering and Management. After 11 years with Newmont, I moved to Butte, Montana where I accepted a position as Assistant Professor of Mining Engineering."

Quarry operators must continue to change and adapt environmental compliance methods to meet the increasingly demanding regulations. To fulfill industry needs, a computer-based decision support system is being developed to facilitate decision making that mine operators are required to make regarding environmental responsibilities. This system can help to determine permitting and compliance measures needed for air, surface water, groundwater, noise, aesthetics, vegetation, wetlands, hazardous wastes, storage tanks and wildlife habitats during the development, operation, and closure phases of mining. Operators will utilize the system's user-friendly interface consisting of mouse driven responses and limited keyboard entries on a desktop computer. The system is easy to upgrade according to the user's needs and changes in current laws and regulations. Data input models, user interfaces, and support of decision making are explained. The program permits inclusion of the decision maker's own insights through "what-if' analysis, in which the user can change ad hoc entries and check the related consequences. Using this approach, the user has complete control over all steps of the decision making process. A storm water example is selected to demonstrate the potential benefits of the support system to environmental decision makers.

Introduction Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and its joint venture partner, Breakwater Resources Ltd., discovered ore grade gold mineralization on their 20 km2 (5000 acre) Wenatchee, WA land position in February 1983. Due to the high grade nature of the discovery ore and the known reserves of ore in the "B Reef' and "B West" zones previously outlined by other companies, a decision was made to construct a mine/mill operation near the known ore occurrences. Further drilling in the discovery area quickly expanded known gold occurrences to more than 3.6 Mt (4 million st) with tentative in-place ore grade of 7 g/t (0.25 oz per st) and minor silver values. Based on existing knowledge of the ore body and the rapidly increasing ore reserve, a decision to build a 1.8-kt/d (2000-stpd) mine and mill complex was made in the second quarter of 1983. A schedule was devised to begin immediate mine development, shaft sinking, environmental and land use permitting, and mill and tailings dam construction (Fig. 1). Meeting the scheduled startup date, April 1, 1985, required a fast track schedule in all areas. To this end, Asamera purchased the Oracle Ridge Partners concentrator. This was an assemblage of new equipment designed for use as a copper concentrator in southern Arizona. The purchase contained all of the major mineral dressing equipment - crushers, screens, rod and ball mills, etc. and an engineering package. It did not include most of the other required items, such as buildings, conveyors, pipelines, tanks, and pumps. At the same time, core samples were sent to two independent process development laboratories for initial flowsheet development. Due to the refractory nature of the carbonaceous ore, cyanide leaching was not feasible. Flotation was selected as the concentration process. Further testing showed that autoclaving of the flotation concentrate followed by cyanidation would result in overall recovery of about 85% gold. A mine manager was hired to begin assembling an operations staff, hire an environmental consulting firm, and begin mine development. Environmental and land use concerns were major obstacles due to the mine's close proximity to a city of 20,000 people. These concerns had to be rapidly defined so as to mitigate any adverse impacts from and mining processing operations. Baseline data dealing with weather, air and water quality, and sound were measured before start of mine construction. Concentrator and flowsheet development remained static until October 1983 while definition drilling and mine development proceeded. In late October, a process engineer was hired to coordinate development of a process flowsheet, purchase the remainder of the concentrator equipment, prepare a concentrator construction contract, finalize concentrator detail engineering, and combine environmental and process requirements with a tailings dam design. Process development There were only 17 months remaining to mill start up from the hiring date of the process engineer. Therefore, the process flowsheet had to be finalized rapidly. To accomplish this, samples of drill core from the highest grade (and therefore potentially the most commercial) ore zones were sent to an outside metallurgical laboratory to confirm beneficiation tests on the flotation process. Test results again showed that flotation would provide about an 86% gold recovery. Therefore, all further testing was concentrated on flotation and autoclave/cyanidation of flotation concentrates. Focusing on a well known process such as flotation was important in accomplishing the rapid design and construction of the concentrator. If, during these next phases, we were continually changing design concepts, layout, and process flow, the mill startup would have been delayed many months. Once a process flowsheet is selected the process engineer must obtain the process criteria needed to design the beneficiation system. For example, it was known in early December that the Oracle Ridge rod and ball mills were too small to grind 1.8 kt/d (2000 stpd) of Wenatchee ore. A decision had to be made to purchase a large, used ball mill and convert the Oracle Ridge ball mill to a rod mill. The process engineer must be cognizant of the process criteria needed to size and select equipment. If not, the process engineer must use the professional services of the equipment manufacturing companies to review the requirements that the equipment is asked to perform. For the Wenatchee system, this resulted in the adaptation of a ball mill to a rod mill with a weight limit of grinding rods to protect the mill bearings and drive trains. When a decision is required, the process engineer has to present the facts and options in a manner that allows a rapid decision. This information must include costs, equipment availability, and effect on the construction schedule. At the Cannon mine, there were process development details that resulted in decisions similar to the ball mill purchase. These included an increased flotation residence time from eight to 25 minutes, an increased thickener area requirement, a high pressure tailings pumping system, and area constraints in plant layout. All of these decisions had to be timely and required assistance from manufacturers' service engineers, and knowledge of the alternate costs and effects on construction completion. Evaporite units of the Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin are known to host native sulfur. In British Columbia, a large number of oil and gas exploration drilling holes reported intersections with native sulfur. The most important ones include 6 meters (20 feet) and 27 meters (90 feet) of native sulfur among 23 occurrences in Devonian Muskeg evaporite or adjacent Slave Point reef facies carbonates. A small Frasch sulfur deposit is known from Devonian Wabamun Group sediments near Camrose in South Central Alberta. Occurrences of native sulfur are common also in association with presently mined gypsum of Devonian Burnais Formation in southeastern British Columbia. Triassic sediments with evaporite members in British Columbia are also known to contain native sulfur showings. A widespread presence of anhydrite in many sedimentary units of Alberta and British Columbia together with oil and gas fields in the same areas and associated native sulfur occurrences point to a possibility for Frasch sulfur deposits in this part of western Canada.

The center of mining at the Homestake gold mine in Lead, SD, is moving deeper every year. As a result, it has become necessary to upgrade the ventilation system. This paper describes the first phase of a scheduled two-phase upgrade - installation of a 2.2-MW (3000-hp) centrifugal fan. The higher pressure fan is required to route larger airflows into the deeper production levels. Selection of the fan began by specifying the necessary operating point to provide these larger airflows. Special site work had to be done on the surface to accommodate the new fan structure as well as underground to reroute airflows.

Two separate studies investigated the compressive strength of basic igneous rocks and its relation to index properties such as porosity, density and soundrave velocity. The rocks tested were weathered dolerite from S. W. England and vesicular lavas from California. In both cases strength was affected considerably by porosity. In the dolerite, strength was also affected by fissures (microcracks) which were formed in the parent rock by shearing and later accentuated by weathering. While test results show that porosity, density and sound velocity are not reliable indices of rock strength, these properties are useful in interpretation of strength test results. Index testing can be used to classify samples according to similar behavior and to recognize the influence of fissures.

A comprehensive approach to the development and organization of an expert system designed to assist electricians in diagnosing electrical faults in mining machinery is discussed. The system includes diagnostic, reference, and tutorial programs. The diagnostic portion of the system is based on a causal-reasoning approach, which is used to establish a hierarchy of symptoms and the subsequent production rules for identifying component-level failures in the motor-control circuit of a shuttle car. With this approach, conclusions are developed directly from knowledge of the circuit and its behavior (in both working and failure modes) based on first principles, rather than the heuristics of a domain expert. The symptoms and their hierarchal structure are formulated by creating "what if' scenarios and performing a qualitative circuit analysis for each fault. Techniques for incorporating interactive graphical displays of the circuit schematic into the diagnostic portion of the system are also presented. Supportive computer programs that provide reference material and tutorials on the circuit are also described.

In March, 1988, a fire occurred in a large underground coal mine. Coal Mine Safety and Health of the Mine Safety and Health Administration was immediately notified of the situation. They requested the assistance of the Pittsburgh Health Technology Center (PHTC) to provide monitoring and analysis of the mine atmosphere in and around the fire area to insure the safety of the miners escaping from the mine and for the miners involved in extinguishing the fire. The capability to provide this type assistance is maintained by the PHTC Offices located at 4800 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The equipment used is maintained field ready and can be mobilized almost immediately. This paper will discuss the response to this recent major mine fire.

In recent years, beneficiation tests were conducted on high dolomite phosphate samples from Florida by the authors from China Lianyungang Design and Research Institute (CLDRI). The research results indicated that flotation is the most effective process for recovering phosphate from Florida high dolomitic pebble. Other operations like scrubbing, desliming and selective grinding might work to some extent, but they could only be applied as supplementary approaches in some cases. Heavy media separation and calcination-digestion technologies are hard to produce satisfactory performance. This paper presents the results of both lab scale and pilot plant tests on Florida high dolomite phosphate pebble using the fine particle flotation technology developed by CLDRI. Some discussions are made on the concerns of Florida phosphate industry and further research.

Mineral processing plants are monitored and controlled using measurements that are usually processed by on-line material balance calculation techniques. However, gross errors, due to sensor biases or failures, may corrupt all the process variable estimates. On-line gross error detection methods are required to ensure efficient mass balance evaluation. In the proposed approach, material imbalances and raw measurement corrections are tested by statistical techniques designed to detect and isolate sensor problems.

South Bulga Colliery, located near Singleton in the Hunter Valley region of Australia, began longwall production in late 1994. The mining conditions there are conducive to high productivity with good roof conditions and a shallow seam with production areas located close to the portal. When the longwall was commissioned, the low capacity and availability of the conveyor system greatly curtailed the mine's productivity. A number of changes were made to the conveyor system culminating in a drive change out to improve the system. Using South Bulga as a case study, this paper aims to demonstrate the absolute necessity of a reliable, high performance conveyor system for the viability of a mine, and some of the factors that are needed to ensure a conveyor system performs as intended. These factors include a thorough understanding of the individual components and how they influence and interact with each other; a system design that is tolerant of variations in component performance and the necessity of robust and reliable communications and PLC programming.

The amenability of column flotation for the beneficiation of fluorspar was investigated, and the overall performance of the column, flotation was compared to the performance of the existing conventional flotation cells at the plant. It was estab¬lished that improved grades and recoveries could be obtained by adopting column technology. Acidspar concentrates as¬saying 97% CaF2, suitable for HF manufacturing, can be produced by adopting two-stage column cleaning in place of multistage cleaning by conventional cells. Similarly, metspar concentrates assaying 90% CaF2, suitable for metallurgical applications, can be achieved in a single-stage cleaning by column flotation. This is an improvement over what is now being achieved using the existing conventional rougher and three-stage cleaning cells in the plant. The number of stages, i.e.,four in the acidspar circuit and four in the metspar circuit, including rougher stages, can be eliminated by adopting a three-column configuration. Thus, the cost of production, the complexity of the circuit and the power consumption can be effectively reduced with other attendant benefits.

6.1 INTRODUCTION The three most critical factors in successful heap leaching operations are: • The methods employed to pretreat ore (i.e, crushing and agglomeration); • Placement of ore on the leach pad (heap building techniques); and • Wetting of the ore with cyanide (solution application techniques). Improper execution of any of these initial steps may result in a substantial sacrifice of total metal extraction or, in the worst case, in project failure. Ore preparation in terms of crushing and agglomeration was discussed in Chapter 5; this chapter therefore focuses on commonly employed techniques for heap construction and solution application. The main objective of heap construction is to obtain the most homogeneous heap possible. "Channeling" of leachate in heaps with preferential seepage paths leads to preferential leachate distribution and uneven/incomplete extraction. The two main contributing causes of channeling are inadequate attention to heap construction and uneven solution application. These pitfall s can best be avoided through a knowledge of the various techniques available and the applicability and success of these techniques with various ore types and site conditions. The remainder of this chapter provides a discussion on these two subjects. 6.2 HEAP BUILDING TECHNIQUES Successful heap building techniques vary with the type of ore and, since no two orebodies are exactly alike, some slight modifications are usually necessary for each specific project. However, it is possible to generalize in terms of the appropriate techniques to be used with ores having similar characteristics. This section discusses the three most commonly used methods of heap construction and provides some guidelines with regard to ore types, construction constraints, and lift height parameters for each of the three. 6.2.1 Run-of-Mine Dumping and Dozing The run-of-mine method of heap building can only be used with ore of a highly silicious nature (i.e., ore which will not generate a large amount of
