A coal's size distribution clay content and moisture content can affect its handling behavior. But the combined effects of these properties and the effects of other properties are not known. Research underway at CQ Inc.'s (formerly EPRI's) Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) and at Iowa State University (ISU) will answer these questions as part of a four year project to develop a coal handleability index for utilities to use when specifying coals. This paper will present preliminary data from the first year of the project, which focused on obtaining data on the chemical and physical properties of carious coals and their measured handling properties. Additionally, size, ash and moisture analyses and shear test data for several coals used at one power plant will be presented along with correlations between these physical and chemical properties and the measured handling properties. These data lead to the conclusion that while moisture content is the most important variable, the amount of -44 µm (-325 mesh) coal fines is a significant factor in determining coal handling behavior.

Almost all persons connected with mining industry have had an exasperating experience like the following: 'On a cold and frosty morning in mid-January, you find yourself quite happy with the world. Production is up and the mine has been running smoothly. All at once the radio cracks up your tranquility -- 'so and so' piece of equip¬ment has broken its 'whatzit'. Now the iron is in the fire, and things have to be fixed quick.!' This can be a major failure which will bring the whole operation to a grinding halt or just one of the numerous maintenance headaches on an auxiliary piece of equipment. After one has experienced a major or minor catastrophe, he has to wonder whether some other methods with respect to design and maintenance would help prevent these unexpected calamities. The objective of this paper is to gain an insight into the charac¬teristics of steel at cold temperatures so that better decisions can be made with respect to maintenance and repair of mining equipment. Most machinery and their structures are exposed to cold temperatures. Even in locations as far south as Alabama and Arizona, brief periods of cold in winter months can adversely affect the ability of mach¬ines to do their work. To understand the background of cold temperature brittle fracture, jet us examine its basic elements. First, when steel gets cold, it gets brittle. This is best described by Figure 1. Introduction The English word "sedimentation" is derived from the Latin verb "sedere" meaning to sink down. As a mineral processing unit operation, sedimenta¬tion has been defined as the separation of a suspension into a supernatant clear fluid and rather dense slurry containing a higher concentration of solid (Brown, G.G. 1960). Sedimen¬tation has been historically subdivided into thickening, which has the primary purpose of increasing the solids content of one of the thickener prod¬ucts relative to the feed stream, and clarification, which has the primary purpose of removing solids from the feed stream to produce a product essentially free from particu¬late matter. There is no absolutely precise distinction between these subdivisions and in certain applica¬tions, both objectives can be accom¬plished. Major Design Factors The capacity of conventional metal¬lurgical sedimentation devices is a function of slurry throughput and its attendant settling rate. Important factors, recognized by early investigators (Taggart, 1972), which influence the settling rate of a given metallur¬gical slurry include: Feed dilution or solids-liquid weight ratio Size and shape of the particulate solids Specific gravity differential between the solids and liquid phases Presence of electrolytes and/or flocculants Pulp viscosity Slurry temperature In addition to the foregoing histor¬ical factors, recent investigators have noted (Pearse, M.J., 1977) that other parameters which may have an influence upon settling rate and, thereby, thickener performance include: Method of flocculant application Particle size distribution Particulate wetting characteristics Feeding arrangements Rake speed and type Existence of convection currents Wind disturbance Evaporation All of the above factors should be examined and the effect upon thick¬ener performance brought about by manipulating the factor over the expected operating range should be determined if performance optimization is desired.

There is a critical need for effective instructional materials at the university level and for an upgrading of mine safety and health in the mining engineering curriculum. A fundamental approach to mine safety and health is recast into the familiar 3 E's: engineering, education, and enforcement, in that order. Each is briefly reviewed and their interdependence emphasized. A unique philosophy for successfully integrating safety and health principles into the mining engineering curriculum is offered. The concept of textbook ?tailoring? is discussed and defended, permitting rapid assemblage and synthesis of existing educational materials. Final recommendations are made for a u, comprehensive approach to mine safety and health education in the undergraduate curriculum.

This paper presents a method for three-phase foam preparation recipe optimization. The pressurized foam is injected into porous media of gob area for prevention and fighting of SPONCOM fires. During the past year the news media has come in for its share of criticism. Some of it, without doubt, is justified. Much of it, like that which has been leveled against some of the rest of us, is not. We can sympathize with the newspapers and magazines, the radio and television stations. Like the coal industry, which I represent, they are a part of the free enterprise system. They depend upon advertising for their existence, and advertisers patronize those media which reach the most people interested in their product. The various news media are therefore In avid competition for circulation. Although they do have an unquestioned influence on the public, they are primarily a reflection of the public and it is in this context that we will consider them. Granted that this reflection is sometimes a bit distorted, let us admit that any subject which does not strike a responsive chord In the public will soon be dropped by the media.

Electronic ore sorting has been in use for over 15 years at many mining operations worldwide. Photometric ore sorting, which operates on the basis of measuring light reflectance levels of a rock surface, is in use at various locations on ores such as limestone, magnesite, gold, talc, spodumene, tungsten and coal. Radiometric sorters have been employed on uranium deposits in the western U.S.A. as well as at certain South African go1 d mines where preconcentrating gold is achieved using uranium association as a detector. A new ore sorter, employing two sensing parameters has been developed. Utilizing both photometric and conductivity sensing modes, this system has application to many gold ore types of North America. The first production machine has been installed at a gold mine near Beardmore, Ontario for the purpose of preconcentrating ore both from waste dumps from past production as well as within the ongoing mining operation.

The application of computers for control purposes in hydrometallurgical processes is not as well-established as in mineral processing plants. This is not only due to the comparatively new development of large-scale application of hydrometallurgy and the relatively small number of operating plants, but also due to some of the basic dynamic characteristics of hydro- metallurgical processes., Basically there is little difference in the development and application of digital control techniques in hydrometallurgical plants from those techniques widely in use throughout the chemical process industry and in nonslurry applications; particularly for those cases involving liquid streams only, the primary sensing elements are essentially the same. On-stream X-ray fluorescence analysis is a well-established method for determination of metal content in the process streams, and standard equipment is used for the measurement and control of pH, flow, density, temperature, pressure, and other variables. Nevertheless, the high proportion of corrosive slurry streams at elevated temperature and pressure poses a challenge to the instrument engineer concerned with developing long-life, reliable instrumentation. One major difference and potential problem area in developing control systems for hydro- metallurgical processes is related to the very long time constants which are common in the larger plant. In these circumstances, it is important to define the overall control objectives very carefully and be prepared to allow for considerable drift in intermediate variables. In larger projects with many control loops the general advantage of lower costs compared to conventional analog instrumentation can be confidently expected. Also in most cases, the process analysis necessary to design and specify a comprehensive computer control system and the increased operator involvement in implementing digital control systems yield additional benefits due to the increased understanding of the dynamic characteristics of the process.

This paper examines the interaction problems of multiple seam mining by combining underground investigation, laboratory testings, and numerical modeling. One case of multiple seam interaction that occurred recently in West Virginia was carefully studied. Causes for the interaction problems were identified and the corresponding mining recommendations were proposed. The principle of pillar columnization and the effect of a remnant pillar on mining operations in the underlying and over- lying seams were also carefully examined. Considerable attention was given to the effect the pillar size, the pillar width, the coal stiffness, the extraction ratio, the degree of inhomogeneity in the interburden, the overburden thickness, the mechanical properties of the interburden rocks, the strata inclination, the interburden thickness, and the in-situ horizontal stresses have on the pillar load transfer mechanism.

A major problem in future discoveries of base metals is their "explorability". By this I mean an exploration program must be designed that assures accurate assessment of the potential for ore, but is within reasonable budgetary constraints. As we are compelled to depend more and more on non-outcropping prospects, "blind" deposits, and as drilling costs multiply, the costs of exploration increase significantly. Solutions to the problem of defining exploration targets are influenced by our conceptions of the origin and recognition o f conditions that localize ore. The maxim that "elephants should be sought in elephant country" presumes we can recognize elephant country. This paper presents a suggested origin for some mineral deposits, and their controls; particularly those termed ?Mississippi Valley type". Tennessee is used as an example of the ideas offered. Mining districts designated "Mississippi Valley type" are, and have long been, the principal sources of barite, fluorite, lead and zinc ores in the United States and elsewhere throughout the world. A large volume of literature is available describing this class of ore deposits, explaining their habitat, and invoking genetic models for them. The quality of this literature is notably uneven, some of it demonstrably erroneous, and much of it is restricted to detailed descriptions of one aspect of the problem, or to detailed descriptions of one aspect of the problem, or to a single mine, or even a single stope. Prior to 1971, there were several clinical trials to evaluate programs for early detection of lung cancer. Among these, the Philadelphia Pulmonary Neoplasm Research Project,(3) the Veterans Administration Study published by Lilienfeld,(7) and the controlled trial of the Kaiser Foundation Health Plan showed an overall five year survival rate of 8% for newly detected cases (the same as the national statistic for unscreened patients). In 1971, the National Cancer Institute initiated three randomized, controlled mortality studies using lung cancer screening of persons at high risk (male smokers over 45 years old). The studies are being conducted at the Johns Hopkins University Hospital, the Mayo Clinic, and the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. The studies have slightly different designs in the combination of sputum cytology and chest x-rays. At the Mayo Clinic the study group is offered screening with sputum cytology and chest x-rays every four months, whereas the control group is advised to have an x-ray and cytology every year. No reminders are sent, and it is believed that only about 20% of the control group is screened. At Johns Hopkins and Memorial, both experimental and control groups are offered annual chest x-rays. The experimental group is additionally offered sputum cytology every four months.(5) At present all of the programs show that screening can detect cancers that are undetectible by other means. However, at this time mortality rates in the control and experimental groups are not significantly different in any of the three studies. OUR PROGRAM Our clinic is located in Grants, New Mexico and we provide most of the pre-employment physical examinations for the mines operating in the Grants area (Kerr McGee Nuclear, Homestake Mining, United Nuclear, Western Nuclear, and Ranchers). In the examinations, we obtain the previous mining history of the worker, a chest x-ray, a sample of sputum for cytological examination, and a blood sample. We also provide routine annual physical examinations of the workers, with special interest in the detection of bronchogenic carcinoma. In the early seventies, we did not have a definite surveillance program. We did not know whether we should have a program like the one started at Memorial or like the one started at the Mayo Clinic. After long consideration, we decided to have a program that does not demand a sputum cytology and chest x-ray every four months, but that allows as many chest x-rays and sputum cytologies as needed to diagnose lung cancer as early as possible. We believe that, if a screening method for cancer is to be optimally effective, it must detect the process at stages early enough for curative therapy. We order a test depending on the age of the miner, the race, the mining history, the smoking history, the radiation exposure levels, and the results of the previous chest x-ray and sputum cytology. With the help of the computer, we have a list of all the miners who should be watched closely because of age, race, mining history, smoking history, radiation exposure, etc. Examination of the miners is performed at our clinic, where all the records are kept. The sputum is collected there but examined in Grand Junction, Colorado, by Dr. Geno Saccomanno. There are two ways to collect sputum. The best way is to collect three consecutive morning samples. For this, we need the cooperation of the miners. They have to follow these instructions and mail the bottle containing the sample to Grand Junction. "Instructions for obtaining a good cough specimen" The enclosed plastic bottle contains a preservative solution, so do not empty out the liquid in it. When you go to bed, place the plastic bottle at your bedside where it will be handy in the morning. When you first get up in the morning (before breakfast) try to cough up some "phlegm" from deep in your chest, and spit it into the liquid in the bottle. Try coughing several times. If you have difficulty coughing, try inhaling deeply the steam from a teakettle (or home-type inhalator). Keep the amount of saliva (ordinary spit) that you put into the bottle along with the cough specimen as small as possible. Do not collect the "phlegm" or mucous that comes from the back of your nose. Put the cap back on the bottle, and shake it vigorously for two minutes. If the amount of material you have coughed up is quite small, then keep the bottle at your bedside for three or four days, and each morning try to add another cough specimen. After obtaining your cough specimen, repack the bottle in the mailing container, and attach the enclosed mailing label. It does not require any postage stamps. Unfortunately, some miners "forget" to mail the sample and end up with an incomplete physical examination. To avoid this some companies, like Homestake, request that we obtain the sample in our clinic by forcing cough and expectorant with a nebulizer machine. This method does not give as good a sputum sample as the previous one, but we do get a sputum sample for every miner. In the framework of the Specific Programme: ?Promoting Competitive and Sustainable Growth? a detection system was designed and developed in order to provide an added value service beyond standard instrumentation. In the hydrocarbon industry it will be possible for the first time to detect in a pulse regime, two types of radiation emissions using a single device. This means that any saturation of hydrocarbons can be detected, irrespective of the degree of formation water mineralization, which is a major limitation on currently available neutron-gamma tools, where the formation water has a low mineralization.

For mine planning in the hardcoal industry the reliable prediciton of the properties of a deposit-both ahead of the zone to be worked as well as of zones at depths not yet developed - may help improve the production results of workings. With the wide spacing of exploration drillings usual in the coal industry, it is hardly possible to establish adequately reliable plans just by simple kriging methods. During the exploration phase a decision has to be made whether the zone ahead of a face area is economically profitable and, in addition, accessible and safe in order to be included in the production planning. It is, first of all, important to gather global information on certain parts of the planning area it the form of local estimates. Moreover, cut-off problems play a critical role, e.g. if there are set cut-off thicknesses as a criterion for minability or if safety aspects have to be considered. Conditional simulation appears to be a useful geostatistic method in order to localize or predict areas of potential rock burst hazard - based on geological criteria in conjunction with the guidelines by mining authorities - in the zones ahead of a working. It is a means of providing an objective basis for the evaluation and planning of mining activities.

In gassy coal mines, some methane drainage is essential for mine safety, but the ratio of total methane drained to total methane produced by the mine can vary from 10 to 70 percent. The volume of methane not captured is diluted by ventilation air and vented to the atmosphere. Since captured methane can be processed and sold, it makes sense to maximize methane drainage from coal mines. This paper describes ventilation and methane drainage schemes to achieve these goals.

Although great strides have been made during the past two decades in the reduction of the severity of accidents and injuries in underground coal mining, the number of accidents resulting in disabling injuries and lost time has continued to increase. Looking ahead to the 1990s, the reduction of accidents and incidents typically found in these latter categories should be emphasized in safety training for underground coal mining. Loss control is an approach which shows promise for applications in mine safety training since loss-control strategies focus on the pre-contact stages of an incident rather than on the incident, itself. Applied to safety training, the heightened awareness of personnel to workplace hazards at the pre-contact stages should result in a reduction of accidents and injuries. This paper explains the concept of loss control and shows how it can be applied in the development of the needs assessment for miner training programs. An example, based on research conducted at the continuous-miner worksite, is provided.

An historic underground copper mine in Wyoming is discharging neutral but copper-laden water into a pristine creek. The EPA-deferred site qualifies for reclamation by the Wyoming Abandoned Mine Land (AML) program. The cleanup goal is to restore the discharge so that the creek can eventually support a trout fishery. Hydrological and geochemical investigations underground have suggested two sources of mine water: one clean and the other containing copper. Results of bench-and pilot-scale tests support the viability of using low-cost passive treatment techniques to reduce copper concentrations in the near-freezing mine discharge.

Liquids containing suspended solids are encountered in most mineral processing applications. Solids levels cover a very wide range, from ppm levels in cooling water systems to slurries containing greater than 70% solids. When the aqueous phase is recycled or further processed, a solid/liquid separation process is used. Chemical additives used to carry out this process are called coagulants and flocculants. In other cases, one seeks to control or modify the properties of the suspension. Dispersants are chemicals used to aid in suspending solids in a liquid as well as to control the properties of the resulting suspension. Dispersants find a range of uses in mining and mineral processing such as scale control, filter aids, flotation aids, and slurry viscosity modification. Materials used as dispersants include inorganic salts, alkalies, organic surfactants, and polyelectrolytes. This paper discusses the use of dispersants in mineral processing, with an emphasis on control of slurry viscosity. The mechanism of dispersion and factors that affect the choice of dispersant will be discussed.

This article reviews some important characteristics of the known Egyptian phosphate deposits, such as mining conditions, transport criteria, quality of products affecting their export markets and utilisation in fertilizers industry. Special attention will be given to the newly discovered large deposit of Abu-Tartur with some billion tons of ore reserves. A big project is now under implementation on Abu-Tartur deposit where the long-wall method of underground mining will be applied and a flow sheet of beneficiation will be in operation including a particular feature nontraditional in phosphate processing: high-intensity magnetic separation to eliminate dolomite impurities. Comparison with some international phosphates will be tried in order to trace the situation of Egyptian phosphates in the world market.
