Nickeliferous laterites were characterized by particle size analysis, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Results showed that the laterites consist mainly of nickel-substituted lizardite with cobble-like morphology and traces amounts of magnetite and phlogopite. As fluoride ions can react with silicon in the lizardite crystal structure and form metal-fluoride complexes, as well as increase the equilibrium constant of the lizardite dissolution in acid solution dramatically, the addition of minor fluoride salts (0.2wt.% NaF) gave a markedly enhanced metal extraction rate (Ni 81.7% and Co 52.3%) under the experi-mental conditions of particle size d50= 25 µm, 10% (v/v) H2SO4, reaction time 2 h, reaction temperature 90°C, liquid-to-solid ratio 3 mL g-1 and stirring at 500 rpm compared with H2SO4 alone (Ni 69.6% and Co 30.8%).

Laboratory experiments were performed on a Brazilian diatomite from Bahia State to produce an industrial product for use as a filter aid. Bench and pilot plant tests were conducted consisting of: diatomite desegregation, organic matter and clay removal, filtration, drying and calcination. Calcination temperature and sodium carbonate addition influenced diatomite particle size distribution. Optimum filtration rates for calcined products were obtained at 900°C and 47 min. residence time with 3% (w/w) of sodium carbonate addition, and resultant products met specifications imposed on filter aids.

The N20 to N25 Tunnel (basic) segment was the second tunnel contract awarded for construction by The PB/MK Team. This project embodied 3.9 km (2.4 miles) of tunnel and was located within the northwest quadrant of the 86.9 km (54 mile) long main collider ring. The contract required the excavation and initial support of a 54.3 m (178 vlf) deep ventilation shaft, a connecting horseshoe shaped Adit and TBM starter tunnel and 3,865 m (12,680 If) long main collider tunnel with a 4.3 m (14 ft) minimum finished diameter. This paper discusses the construction methods, equipment utilized and the production achieved in the construction of the ventilation shaft, connecting adits and the main collider tunnel.

The Raman spectroscopic technique was used to study electrochernically oxidized pyrite in-situ. It was found that Raman-active sulfur oxidation products could be detected after a proper potential was applied to the pyrite electrode for a threshold period of time. There existed a minimum potential below which sulfur could not be observed. However, when the applied potential exceeded a certain limit, the intensity of the sulfur spectra decreased. The minimum potential at which sulfur could be observed changed with solution pH. For both acid (pH 2.7) and weak alkaline (pH 9.2) solutions, the minimum potential was 0.8 V/SCE, whereas for neutral (pH 6.5) solutions the value was 0.4 V/SCE. In strong alkaline solutions (pH 12.5) surface sulfur oxidation products could not be detected at any potential.

Investment in the ferrous sector between 1981 and 1985 will total about $9 billion, or 7.6% of the state budget for capital assets. The money will primarily go to complete the first stage of the Baoshan Iron and Steel complex and to increase steel production by 3 Mt* (3.3 million st) and seamless tubing by 0.5 Mt (551,000 st). Investment in 1983 will be about $3.5 billion, a 28% increase over 1981. Although data on nonferrous investment is less specific, the Chinese announced early this spring that the country's investment would be 2.6 times greater than the average spent during the previous five year plans. Geological surveying will also be stepped up. The Ministry of Geology and Minerals recently announced it will incorporate a search for metal and mineral resources into its second round of oil and gas surveys. The Sixth Five-Year Plan desig¬nates some actual production targets. Steel is to increase to more than 72 Mt (79.4 million st). The country's production of 10 priority nonferrous metals - aluminum (and bauxite), copper, lead, zinc, nickel, tin, antimony, mercury, magnesium, and titanium - is to increase 12.7%. Top priority is to develop aluminum production. Renewed efforts are to be made to develop gold and silver production and to increase rare earth and rare metal production. By April 1983 when the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. was established, some five months after publication of the Five-Year Plan, the goals for nonferrous development had already been upgraded and changed to include: • development priority status equal to that of coal's; • an increase of more than 150% in the 1985 projected production level for the 10 top nonferrous metals (a move from the Sixth Five-year Plan's production increase of 12.7% to one of 34%); and • modification of the top 10 nonferrous metals list to include tungsten, molybdenum, and rare earths. Aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc maintained primary importance, while mercury, magnesium, and titanium were deleted. It is likely that the modification will be taken one step further and titanium will be substituted for antimony. China has already indicated its intentions to stabilize rather than expand its antimony industry, while press reports play up the titanium industry's importance to the country's development. In addition, the China Nonferrous Metal Industry Corp. announced that it expects to register a progressive annual increase of 4% in foreign currency earnings through export. China's nonferrous development efforts, therefore, appear two-pronged. First, the country's efforts will be directed toward self-sufficiency in its four major process and primary metals - aluminum, copper, zinc, and lead - and a number of other nonferrous metals that are in increasing demand by its light industry sector. At present, 96% of China's non¬ferrous consumption is composed of aluminum, copper, lead, and zinc. Substantial portions of that must be imported to meet rising demand. Second, efforts will concentrate on those metals that can be developed the fastest and are in "urgent demand" on the international market. Metals such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, titanium, nickel, and rare earths will be given freer use of foreign capital and technology to increase production levels and raise quality. Examples of some projects in the area include upgrading the country's carbide industry and developing new high speed and tool steels to meet international standards. There are three principle lines of evidence that indicate the clay minerals found in the Goathill North (GHN) rock pile at the Molycorp mine are predominantly a product of hydrothermal alteration, not weathering. The unweathered drill core and samples from GHN have similar types and abundances of clay-mineral groups based on XRD analysis. Chemical analyses from the electron microprobe reveal similar chemical compositions for the hydrothermal alteration clays in drill-core samples and clays found in the rock pile. Textural evidence gathered from petrographic and microprobe examination also suggests a hydrothermal origin for clay minerals.

"The Jinhae Geoje gas pipeline tunnel project is the largest (7.8 km) and the deepest (90 m) subsea tunnel in South Korea. This tunnel will house a pipeline to carry natural gas from the mainland to Geoje Island southeast of the country to alleviate the increased demands for natural gas, especially in the winter season. Tunneling is currently underway using two slurry shield TBMs of 3.5 m diameter. This paper describes the major design elements of the tunneling machines and their performance evaluation. For this purpose, a thorough analysis of geotechnical information was performed to evaluate the tunnel elevation to reduce the risk of tunneling under high water pressure in unstable and permeable rock mass under 9 bar water pressure. TBM specification and TBM performance were also analyzed using different methods, including well-known models as well as a rotary cutting machine test developed in house in Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company. INTRODUCTION High demand for natural gas, especially in winter season was the primary driving factor for the design of the Jinhae Geoje gas pipeline project. This project is located southeast of South Korea between Jinhae district and Geoje Island and runs for over 50 km length. The mid part of this project includes a 3.5 m diameter subsea tunnel consisting of two sections of Geoje to Jiri Island (4.3 km) and Jinhae to Jiri Island (3.5 km). Figure 1 shows the tunnel project location and its layout. Figure 2 shows the geological profile along the tunnel. As can be seen, the tunnel passes mainly through three rock types: granite, tuff breccia, and andesite tuff. This tunnel was planned to be constructed by two face pressurized shielded TBMs and to be lined with a segmental lining of 2.8 m internal diameter. The major challenge for this tunnel is its maximum expected water pressure at the tunnel invert (8.83 bar). At such a high water pressure, the TBMs required special design to ensure they can handle unexpected water pressure and to ensure the risks for the TBM maintenance intervention are minimal. In this regard, a thorough analysis was conducted on the TBM design parameters and geotechnical information to define required TBMs’ design parameters and to identify the safest tunnel elevation. This paper provides a brief overview of the project geotechnical information, TBM selection and its design specification, tunnel elevation selection, and TBM penetration rate evaluation. In this regard, a rotary cutting machine testing equipment was used to perform trial tests on a similar rock type encountered along the tunnel for performance evaluation and optimization."

Heavy minerals have been mined from the sands of the United States’ Atlantic Coastal Plain since the early part of the twentieth century. Production of ilmenite from beach sands near Mineral City (Ponte Vedra), Florida, began in 1916. The first reported large-scale recovery of zircon in Florida was reported from this deposit in 1922 and of rutile in 1925. These operations ceased in 1929. Today the Ponte Vedra Country Club and Golf Course is situated in the center of the former mining site. In 1942 heavy-mineral operations were established on 202 hectares of land situated in Duval County, Florida. The location is about 16 kilometers east of the center of Jacksonville, Florida, in an area known as Arlington. This operation demonstrated that low-grade sand containing only 2 to 3 percent titanium minerals could be concentrated economically with the Humphreys spiral and that the oxides could be separated from the heavy silicates by electrostatic methods. Much of this area is now covered by a large mall and is a major retail- commercial center. Between 1958 and 1964 the Skinner tract, a deposit about 4 kilometers south of the above deposit, was mined. Today the area of this deposit is known as Deerwood, a gated country club community on the southside of Jacksonville. Further inland, E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. has been mining heavy minerals from a physiographic feature known as Trail Ridge since 1948, and a deposit near Green Cove Springs, Florida has been in production since 1972. Since the start of heavy-mineral mining in the southeastern United States, nine heavy-mineral ore bodies either have been or are being exploited in Florida and Georgia. Other deposits either have been lost to mining or are yet to be mined. These deposits have different origins. Some formed along shorelines at the heights of marine transgressions while others formed on regressional beach ridge plains during periods of temporary stillstands or slight transgressions. These different origins are reflected in the chemical and physical characteristics of the deposits. Ilmenite in older, more western deposits has a higher TiO2 content than ilmenite in younger, more eastern deposits. TiO2 content does not very with north-south direction. Garnet and epidote are absent or rare in the older Trail Ridge deposits, but progressively become common in the younger Duval Upland, Crestal Pamlico, and Holocene deposits. Grain size is coarsest for Trail Ridge sediments and finest for sediments in Duval Upland and Crestal Pamlico deposits. The average grain size for Holocene deposits is intermediate between Trail Ridge and Duval Upland deposits. The two models for the origin of the heavy-mineral deposits – deposits formed at the height of major marine transgression; and deposits formed during periods of temporary stillstands or slight transgressions that occur during a general marine regression; - are consistent with known sedimentological data and depositional trends.

Thallium is an uncommon heavy metal that may be found in concentrations that exceed regulatory limits in mining influenced water associated with processing cadmium, copper, gold, lead, and zinc ores. This study evaluated cost-effective modifications to lime precipitation treatment to reduce thallium concentrations to below the EPA drinking water MCL of 2 ppb. The oxidative precipitation of Tl+ to Tlß+ by potassium permanganate was explored for thallium removal at low concentrations (1 ppm initial thallium). Laboratory batch tests were performed to evaluate the removal of thallium from synthetic solutions. Three ratios of potassium permanganate to oxidizable metals in solution were used (one-half, one and two times stoichiometry). Thallium was removed to less than 1 ppb for all stoichiometric ratios evaluated within 10 minutes of reaction. The efficacy of oxidative precipitation for thallium removal is presented.

Flow rate into the thickener or clarifier a) As the flow rate increases into the thickener or clarifier ?retention time? decreases which causes a greater affect hydraulically on the settling solids. So as the flow rate increases it will generally mean an increase in flocculant dosing rate. b) As the flow rate decreases into the thickener or clarifier the retention time increases which reduces the hydraulic affect on settling, improving settling rates. This will generally mean that as the flow rate decreases, we will decrease the flocculant dose rate.

During a period of six months in FY2018, a series of trials were conducted to compare drilling accuracy using two different methodologies and the subsequent impact this had on ore dilution. Testing was conducted at Cracow underground gold mine in Queensland, Australia. The drill rig’s existing alignment process was compared to a new technology system with the following observations: - Using the existing alignment process only 20% of holes surveyed recorded toe points within the +/-300mm (11.8in) tolerance blast-hole deviation. - The new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, reducing average blast-hole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%. The increased accuracy reduced stope dilution by reducing over-break of subgrade ore: - Stopes drilled using the new technology recorded 62.6% less average dilution. - This contributed to an overall reduction in dilution for the full year (FY18) of 5 percentage points compared to FY17 - from 22% to 17% (a net decrease of 22.7%). A cost-benefit analysis extrapolated from the trials stipulates that if the new technology were in use for a full 12 months, when applied to FY17 full year data, a 10 percentage point reduction in dilution would represent a net 45.4% decrease, and would result in AUD8.2M (USD5.9) additional ore recovered, with AUD4.5M (USD3.2M) less spent on wasted cost of haulage and processing of diluted ore. As a result, return per tonne would increase 22%, from AUD87 (USD63) to AUD106 (USD77.1). INTRODUCTION Dilution – planned and unplanned – remains a significant cost impairment in the mining process. A series of trials were held over a six-month period in FY18 which established the cost-benefit of new technology as it applies to the alignment accuracy of production drilling rigs in underground mining, thus confirming its ability to limit drilling as one of the causes of dilution. The trials identified three underlying factors affecting drilling accuracy, measurable by blast-hole deviation surveys of planned vs actual toe data. These were; rig alignment error, collar location change/error, and in-hole deviation. The trials involved a comparison of existing rig setup processes and technology, with the new technology (Minnovare’s Production Optimiser system). The trials were undertaken in the same environment; an operating underground gold mine - Cracow Gold Mine. The comparison first revealed the extent to which rig alignment impacts blast-hole deviation. Secondly, the new technology was proven to limit rig alignment error, thereby reducing average blast-hole deviation and increasing the number of holes drilled within tolerance by 160%.

The Functional Performance Equation for ball milling circuits allows us to isolate the circuit classification system efficiency (CSE) from the mill?s grinding performance. The factors which affect circuit CSE are reviewed, with emphasis on water usage at the classifiers. It is shown that manipulation of such water usage can be carried out to improve plant grinding circuit efficiency, at times by more than 30 percent.

Effective tools are not only essential for the design of practical and efficient underground mine ventilation systems but must also play an integral part in the operation of the mine. One such tool is VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software. VUMA-coal is Windows-based and has been specially designed for the simulation of underground coal mines and includes user-friendly coal specific interfaces and three-dimensional graphics designed to facilitate in the construction and analysis of networks. VUMA-coal can be utilised during the design phase of new collieries, be used to conduct ?what-if? and optimisation studies, and be integrated into the ?day-to-day? ventilation related operations. In addition, VUMA-coal can be used to simulate dust and gas distribution in a ventilation network, as well as predict the impact of control measures. This paper describes the interactive VUMA-coal ventilation simulation software and its underlying design features and outlines a case study of how VUMA-coal has been integrated into Anglo Coal?s Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Engineering [VOHE] department as part of the standard planning and evaluation process in their operational mines as well as long term planning and future mining operations.

The Federal Bureau of Mines examined tailings samples from 13 western copper operations to determine the potential for recovering rutile. Results showed that six of the samples contained sufficient liberated titania to be considered potential sources. One sample contained 0.75 percent Ti02 or 0.40 percent liberated rutile. Batch flotation studies developed a procedure that recovered 70 percent of the liberated rutile at a grade of 34.7 percent TiO2. Sulfuric acid leaching studies on 12 of the samples dissolved 100 to 2,200 grams Cu per ton of tailings; leaching of the slimes showed slightly more copper was dissolved, 1,800 to 3,300 grams Cu per ton of minus lo-micrometer material. Bulk sulfide flotation of nine of the samples resulted in concentrates that contained 0.38 to 2.0 percent Cu and 0.7 to 2.1 and 6.9 to 42.9 grams per ton Au and Ag, respectively.

This study compares the cementation performance of metallic iron, metallic aluminum, and metallic tin in terms of the reaction conditions and parameters in synthetic antimony chloride solutions. The effects on the antimony recovery (%) caused by the cementators’ types, stirring speed, reaction time, and temperatures were explored thoroughly. The cementation kinetics of antimony were also explored for each cementator. The activation energies were determined to be 10.99, 9.09, and 13.58 kJ mol– 1 for Al, Fe, and Sn, respectively. The results reveal that the reaction is diffusion controlled, and comparable results were obtained for each cementator. At 25 °C, 40 mg of iron powder was found to reduce all antimony ions (i.e., approx. 99% recovery), but even when 100 mg of Al and Sn cementators were used, the antimony recovery did not reach 100%. This result shows that iron is the best candidate to cement antimony out of the solution.

So good are things that from April 23 to 29 more than 500,000 visitors involved in those two industries attended the bauma 2007 Trade Show in Munich, Germany. Bauma is an international trade fair for construction and mining equipment that took place at the New Munich Trade Fair Center. It is hosted by Munich once every three years. This year was the most successful bauma ever and further strengthened the shows position as the world leader in the field.

With the rapid development of renewable energy technology, such as electricity reserves, to store energy for electric or electric vehicles, environmentally friendly energy sources are expected to continue to be fulfilled according to mobility and stationary energy needs. Lithium is the most attractive candidate for energy storage development. The presence of lithium in Indonesia in the Sidoarjo mud content is interesting to be used as an alternative source of raw materials. During the research, sulfuric acid acted as a solvent, and hydrogen peroxide acted as an oxidation agent. Lithium recovery will be studied using a leaching process at various temperatures (30, 45, and 60 °C) and sulfuric acid concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 mol/L). The increasing temperature, sulfuric acid concentration, and hydrogen peroxide concentration will directly affect the lithium recovery. An increase in sulfuric acid concentration will be directly proportional to the recovery of lithium in the solution. Optimum conditions were obtained at varying 6 mol/L sulfuric acid concentrations and 60 °C temperature variations. The shrinking core model (SCM) studied leaching kinetics, and ash layer diffusion acted as a rate-controlling process. The activation energy of the leaching process was obtained at 38.90 kJ/mol.

A collaborative research project is undertaken by Anglo American Coal and CSIRO to develop appropriate strategies for gas and spontaneous combustion management of longer panels. Extensive computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling studies have been conducted and calibrated using operational longwall goaf gas data to obtain a fundamental understanding of goaf gas flow patterns in longwall panels of 1.0-km and 3.0-km lengths and a detailed investigation of the effect of various mining and operational parameters on goaf gas flow patterns. The modelling studies have also been used to investigate the performance of various gas drainage and proactive inertisation strategies during various stages of longwall panel extraction. Simulation results indicated that apart from tailgate (TG) side goaf holes, gas drainage from maingate (MG) goaf holes and the mid panel start-up goaf holes would be useful for flat seam field conditions. Operation of 8–10 goaf holes is recommended for field site conditions with high goaf gas emissions of 6000 L/s. The modelling results indicated that the traditional inert gas flow rate of 500 L/s currently used in some mines would be insufficient to achieve effective goaf inertisation in long panels. Results indicate that 3.0- km-long panels would require 1500 L/s of inert gas and there is a need for multi-point inert gas injection strategy for effective goaf inertisation. In this paper, details and results of modelling investigations and recommended strategies for gas and spontaneous combustion management in 1.0-km- and 3.0-km-long panels are presented.

When originally accepting the assignment, the Client had described the property as vacant land. A prior appraisal was later discovered and revealed that the property included a mineral rights appraisal. Further research disclosed an old dispute with a court ruling based on testimony by AIMA-certified experts. The present appraisal was therefore based on data from findings of the court with a fresh look at discount rate, absorption period, and residual land value. Fortuitously, the property subsequently sold on the market, while meeting all criteria for Fair Market Value. This provided insight into a market-based discount rate. Also, the absorption period could be adjusted in accordance with the current market conditions. The residual land value was minimal (based on comparable sales and projecting trends in market) as the property was affected by a flood zone and the surrounding development was sparse. PROPERTY HISTORY: A GREAT INVESTMENT Briefly, the subject property is located in the floodplain region of the San Jacinto River, a short river in southeastern Texas that flows into Galveston Bay, filled with sand and gravel. This location is on the north side of Houston, north of Beltway 8 on the east side of I-59.

Introduction The concept of in-the-wall haulage was formally introduced to the mining community in the early 1970s. The basic concept is simple. Rather than the traditional in-the-pit haulage/access ramp, single or twin ramps driven in the pit wall are used with crosscut connections on the working levels. The in-the-wall pit haulage system could be considered as part of the opening of a new mine, a way of completing to final depth an existing pit, or part of the transition from open-pit to underground mining with the ramp remaining as part of the access. This paper is intended to acquaint the reader, particularly mine planning engineers, with some of the possibilities presented by the concept. Nordstrom (1983) said, "In many countries, mining engineers are either open-pit or underground specialists and, hence, often don't consider the possibilities for combining the best aspects of each into a hybrid mining system." This is believed to be true. There are few "hybrid mines" employing, for example, open-pit methods with underground haulage systems. One reason is the variance with the experience of the mining company and the engineers involved. However, with today's low metal prices, innovative and unconventional thinking may be just what a property requires to remain in production. All the possible situations where an in-the-wall ramp might be considered cannot be presented here. Rather, a few examples will be discussed for illustration purposes. Potential savings in stripping costs A major cost in open-pit mining is associated with the removal of overburden and waste rock. Although much of this stripping cannot be avoided, the volume (V) associated with the presence of an in-pit haul road can be quite large, V 100 (pit depth) a (road width) 2 x road grade (%) As an example, consider a vertical ore body 400 m (1312 ft) long, 60 m (197 ft) thick, extending to a depth of 160 m (525 ft). Cross sections are shown in Fig. 1. Other data are: ore tonnage = 11 Mt (12 million st), ore density = 2.9 t/m3 (0.09 st per cu ft), waste rock density = 2.7 t/m3 (0.08 st per cu ft), road width = 20 m (66 ft), road gradient = 10%, and level interval = 10 m (33 ft). The evaluation has been made assuming that the pit slope (0) is constant around the pit except on the side with the haul road. On this side, the slope is decreased to allow for the road. Slope angles of 30° to 60° have been selected to indicate the dependence of stripping volume (V) on slope angle. The stripping at the ends have been calculated assuming representation by cones. The volume associated with the haul road is 2.6 Mm3 (92.8 million cu ft). A comparison of the strip volumes involved is shown in Table 1. As can be seen, the percent savings in strip volume varies from about 4% to 17% and depends greatly on the slope angle. It is perhaps more interesting to examine the savings in stripping costs that could then be used to cover the cost of the access ramp and the crosscuts for stripping costs of $3/m3 ($0.08 per cu ft).
