As diesel exhaust contains a mixture of several materials of varying degrees of toxicity which interact to a currently undefined extent in their effects on health, the prescription of a quantity of ventilating air to dilute the exhaust to a safe level is necessarily, to some extent, arbitrary. Some jurisdictions rely on the application of a safety factor to a single "governing" component (usually nitric oxide for most modern diesel engines). Others specify that the total of the "adjusted" concentrations (actual concentration divided by maximum permissible concentration) not exceed "one" for related constituents (irritant gases for example). Neither of these approaches, however, takes account of the interaction of the gaseous constituents with diesel soot (although many studies verify such interactions), nor do they provide any economic incentive for reducing pollutants which are not included in the criteria for ventilation. Because of these factors, the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources awarded a contract for a study of the current literature bearing on the "Health Implications of Exposure of Underground Mine Workers to Diesel Exhaust Emissions" (1). One goal of this study was the formulation of a new ventilation criterion. The contractors, Ian W. French and Associates, studied more than 1500 literature citations which they interpreted in a 350 page report and summarized in a companion 1600 page annotated bibliography. In the recommendations section of the report, they defined a new 'health effects index' or ventilation criterion "V" as follows: [ ] The contractors consider that a "V" between 3.0 and 4.0 poses a moderate threat to health which could be alleviated by the use of protective equipment such-as filter helmets. If V exceeds 4.0, an increase in ventilation quantity to reduce the pollutant levels is indicated. In the case of mines with a quartz content in excess of 20% in the ore, the contractor recommends that a term. [Quartz]/ [Threshold Limit Value Quartz] be added to the equation, and [2.0 = ?v? = 30] be the range justifying protective equipment, with added ventilation if "v" exceeds 3. A degree of pragmatism was inherent in the development of the equation, as the contractors recognized that the components of the index, if it is to be useful in the near term, should be within current routine underground environmental assay capability.

The practice of transporting an ore or matrix from a pit area to the plant process area by means of a hydraulic pipeline has long been used by the mining industry. The industries which have classically used hydraulic transportation of ore to the plant include the phosphate mining industry, the heavy minerals mining industry, the clay mining industry, and the sand mining industry. As the advantages of this method become better known throughout the mining industry as a whole, and as techniques and expertise improve, its use will undoubtedly spread. Its use is presently being contemplated in iron mining diatomaceous earth mining, and several industries where massive removal of overburden is a predicate to economical mining. The widely recognized advantages of hydraulic transport at ion of ore from the pit area to the mines are: 1) Its relatively low initial capital costs. 2) Its speed of relocation at the mine site. 3) The washing and scrubbing action given to the ore by its hydraulic passage into the pit pump and the subsequent trip through booster pumps down the pipeline to the plant.

Extensive efforts are under way toward applying computer techniques to mine production scheduling problems. These efforts are concentrated in four areas: optimization, computerization of traditional methods, heuristics, and simulations. These areas complement each other rather than compete. Characteristics of each are discussed toward enabling the engineer to evaluate specific systems that may be encountered. Alternative approaches within each classification are described as well as the motivation for each.

INTRODUCTION Since the nineteen fifties, process engineers have been seriously concerned with process models for various purposes (1,2,3). Models serve as subroutines to mathematical flowsheets which simulate circuits of interest. Simulators can serve to increase process know- ledge, assess circuit performance, investigate flowsheet modifications, evaluate new flowsheets, perform off-line optimization, and compare alternative control strategies. This chapter describes a methodology to develop a simulator of a bulk Cu-Mo circuit comprised of roughers, scavengers and 3 stages of cleaning. The simulator was employed to evaluate the influence of water addition at circuit points and to estimate the optimal number of cells for each stage in the circuit. DESCRIPTION OF CIRCUIT Figure 1 is a flowsheet of the Brenda Mines Ltd. (located near Peachland, B. C.) bulk Cu-Mo flotation circuit as simulated prior to an expansion/renovation which involved the installation of large, new flotation cells. Referring to the flowsheet, feed to rougher cells includes fresh feed, scavenger concentrate and 1st cleaner tailing. Rougher con, 1st cleaner (sect ion 2) con and 2nd cleaner tailing are fed to 1st cleaners (section 1). 1st cleaner (section 1) concentrate and 3rd cleaner tailing serve as 2nd cleaner feed, while 2nd cleaner concentrate is fed to the 3rd cleaners which produce a final bulk concentrate. Table 1 lists cell types and specifications important to the circuit. DEVELOPMENT OF MODELS To develop flotation cell models a systematic procedure was employed (4). This involves the selection of responses and factors, proposing models to be fitted, the acquisition of raw data, the statistical adjustment of raw data, fitting models to adjusted data and testing the adequacy of fitted functions. Responses and Factors Responses of interest included recoveries, concentrate grades and concentrate solids/water flow rates for each stage. Factors that influence these responses, such as reagent addition rates, air flow rates to cells, solids and water flow rates to stages and feed grades were not manipulated during the sampling period. Biology opens a new frontier for the mining industry. With rising environmental concerns, the need to couple conventional chemical and physical technologies with sustainable approaches is pressing. At Allonnia, we harness microbial processes to create innovative and environmentally responsible technologies with broad applications. The native microbial community (microbiome) remains largely unexplored at most mining sites, unlike the geochemical environment. The exploration of complex biological reactions that could transform mining technology is just starting and holds vast possibilities, spanning bio-cementation, carbon sequestration, ore beneficiation, water mitigation, bioleaching, metals recovery, and more. Allonnia has collected samples from mine sites in Australia, Africa, and North America to characterize the microbiome and uncover the genetic potential present in mineral-rich environments. We are evaluating microbial metabolites that selectively solubilize gangue from various ores. In addition, biological reactions hold promise as tailings stabilizers. Our early efforts illustrate exciting prospects for harnessing biology’s potential in mining.

Mining explosions in rocks originate stress waves of great intensity, which crush the surrounding rocks and are then propagated as a seismic wave. Seismic waves are the cause of dynamic loading of pillars and their subsequent destruction. In calculating safe dimensions for inter-room pillars, not only the stresses conditioned by overburden pressures should be taken into consideration, but also the dynamic stresses caused by explosion. This is of particular importance for pillars with great specific acoustic impedance which have been destroyed mainly by the reflected seismic wave. It is possible to take dynamic loading into consideration in the calculation of pillars when the parameters of the propagation wave, the dynamic elastic constants of rocks, the strength properties of rocks, the strength properties of rocks subjected to dynamic loads and the parameters of the blasting charge are known. An example of the calculation for the safe width of an inter-room pillar subjected to the seismic effect of an explosion is given and the possibilities of reducing the dynamic loading of pillars are discussed.

The problems of toxic, noxious, and explo¬sive atmospheres caused by gases and dusts are certain special environmental considerations in underground mining. Some other problems unique to underground mining are design of stable structures in the strata and their support, lighting the workings, and control of noise in confined spaces. These affect the health and safety of the workmen and deserve critical analyses. Some of the most important environmental parameters of underground mining are summarized in Table 1. The list is not exhaustive but illustrates the scope of environmental planning in underground mining. This chapter will discuss the use of computers and computer models in mine atmospheric environmental planning.

The Federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) requires a surface mine operator to post a performance bond before a mining permit can be issued to that operator. Release of that bond is contingent upon the completion of all required reclamation, restoration, and abatement work on the permit area. This paper explores the requirements of each of the three phases of reclamation under SMCRA, as well as provisions of four exemplar state regulations of four states that have been granted "primacy" under SMCRA. Successful completion of these requirements is a condition pre cedent to the release of performance bond liability. Failure to secure a timely bond release will have an ad verse impact on an operator's other mine permitting activities throughout the United States.

When I wrote the Railroad portion of "Mining Engineering" magazines 94 Powder River Basin (PRB) Coal Article I described to you some definite destinations the Railroads had in mind. As with many destinations, the ones I wrote of turned out to be merely stops on the way to places that we have yet to reach. Somewhere along the way we discovered that making it better is a continuous process not just something that you can do in phases I, II, III, & IV. We always knew this I suspect, but perhaps not at the awareness level that exists in RR environments in 1997. The purpose of this article is to update the 94 article, which I could do very quickly. Everything I told you we were going to do in 94 is done, end of story! But in addition to making it a very short article it would not be telling you the things RR has done beyond what we were planning in 94 and for the future.

The question of ultimate recovery in heap leaching operations is always of particular concern with respect to economic considerations. Of course the particle size distribution is a critical factor which determines ultimate recovery and which must be established based on a balance between the extent of mineral exposure and transport phenomena. Now it seems that the ultimate recovery for a given particle size distribution can be established from mineral exposure analysis by x-ray microtomography (XMT). Using recently developed software, micro-CT data can be used to determine the fraction of mineral exposed and thus the ultimate recovery. Examples of mineral exposure analysis are given for the copper heap leaching operation at Zaldivar, Chile.

Having seen significant improvements to accident rates in the last 40 years, companies in the Swedish mining industry now show a greater focus on the development of safety cultures throughout their organisations and workplaces. However, there is a lack of research examining the different safety initiatives and strategies practiced in the industry today. This study explores the potential influence and consequences such initiatives may have on the development of safety cultures in the Swedish mining industry. Twelve interviews with experts on safety initiatives from four different Swedish mining organisations were conducted and analysed in a process based on qualitative thematic analysis to identify notable connections to safety culture development. The results of these interviews highlight proclivities in the implementation and use of safety initiatives such as subjects of focus, methods and desired effects. This enables the interpretation of the conceptualisation and methods for the development of safety culture in these organisations based on their approaches to safety development. We believe the results of this study can serve as support for discussions on safety culture development in the Swedish mining industry, and be of interest for international mining industries, in addition to approaches to research in this field. However, we also believe it is important to emphasise the opportunities to approach safety culture in mining from different perspectives than those common today.

Much of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Host producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC)operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectfully. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept Iles, Quebec.

The emergence of activated charcoal adsorption as the most popular recovery method for precious metals, has led to numerous innovations aimed at increasing the efficiency of the process. This article describes a change in traditional charcoal transfer methods which will aid in reducing charcoal attrition losses. Studies have shown that significant charcoal attrition takes place during transfer, be it when using airlifts or centrifugal pumps. Tests conducted at Pinson Mines indicated a 4 to 8% loss to the minus 20 mesh fraction of charcoal after three (3) hours of pumping charcoal. Tests conducted while the author was at Jerritt Canyon indicated that charcoal transfer was a major contributor to charcoal losses; a decrease in the amount of coarse charcoal (plus 12 mesh) and an increase in the amount of finer charcoal (minus 16 plus 20 mesh) was noted as charcoal was moved to the head of the adsorption circuit.

The gases transportation and adsorption in the coal are greatly dependent on the pore-crack parameters, such as the porosity, the pore distribution, as well as the number and size of the pores. What?s more, the pore parameters of the coal are always changing with the temperature. However, the pore characteristics and their changes are extremely difficult to quantify. In this case, Fractal Theory provides a good tool to address this issue. Based on this theory, the pore distribution coupled with the size of the pores can be quantitatively described. In this paper, the equation used to calculate the Fractal Dimension of coal pores was deduced and Mercury Porosimetry was employed to test the pores distributions of coal samples at different temperature. The experimental data excellently verified the Fractal characteristics of coal pores. In addition, the experiments also indicate that the Fractal Dimension of the coal pores linearly increases with the temperature.

A previous investigation showed that corrosion currents estimated from polarization curves for the pyrrhotite-grinding media system under abrasion correlated well with corrosion currents estimated from marked ball wear test data by applying Faraday's law. Freshly abraded metal debris were magnetically attracted to pyrrhotite and lowered the rest potentials of the mineral particles, thereby affecting the corrosive wear. A prototype expert advisor was developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to systematically offer advice on the control of a Florida phosphate operation. The PC based system receives input from remote sensors for circuit parameters such as feed rate, reagent addition, and pH and from operator entered information such as the quality of the concentrate and tailings in each of the coarse, fine, and amine flotation circuits. The computer evaluates the information using rules obtained from industry representatives and Bureau flotation experts. Recommended actions and questions are displayed to quickly guide the operator to a problem within the flotation circuit and suggest a solution. This process control system could provide more uniformity among the flotation operators and also serve as a trainer for new operators. In addition, it represents a step toward fully automated systems for phosphate flotation.

Effect of iron on the removal of arsenic, mercury and selenium from gold mining effluents. Arsenic, mercury and selenium are common trace elements in gold tailing effluents that require removal before the water is either recycled or returned to a receiving body. One of the better methods of removal of these elements is the use of iron salts whereby, the metal is trapped on the freshly precipitated hydrolyzed iron oxides either by adsorption or enmeshment of the fine particulate and hence, removed from solution. The metal removal is effected by iron to metal ratio, pH, temperature etc. Pilot plant tests have shown that mercury can be reduced to < 5 ppb Hg, while full scale tests on arsenic and selenium have achieved levels of < 50 ppb As and < 10 ppb Se in well controlled systems.

Belt feeders are commonly used to meter the flow of bulk solids from bins and hoppers. If the interface between the hopper outlet and belt feeder is not designed correctly, flow from the bin may be severely compromised, resulting in problems of no-flow, segregation, flooding, etc. By knowing the flow characteristics of the bulk solid being handled and applying proven design techniques, such problems can be avoided. Relevant bulk solids flow characteristics are identified, along with measurement techniques. Design procedures for correcting problems with existing feeders as well as proper design of new feeders are presented, along with case histories of successful application of these procedures.

Computer techniques for open-pit limit analysis were introduced into Kennecott Copper Corp. (KCC) during the early 1960&apos;s. The first computerized approach used block matrix mineral and economic models, and a removal increment mining simulator. A detailed description of the approach was published in the May issue of Mining Engineering (Carlson, et al., 1966) and also in Chapter 30.3 of the SME Mining Engineering Handbook (Pana and Davey, 1973). Since then, many refinements have been made to improve the system and the resulting pit limit design. The fundamentals, however, generally remain unchanged. Computerized open-pit limit analysis is presently used by Kennecott&apos;s open-pit copper properties and by the Quebec Iron and Titanium Corp. The system and the fundamental evaluation techniques it represents are cornerstones of all open-pit mine planning activities within KCC. This case study describes a typical example of open-pit limit analysis within KCC. The case involves a copper sulfide porphyry deposit with additional minor amounts of molybdenum, gold, and silver. The ore-grade mineralization within the pit design will be mill feed for a sulfide ore concentrator, and subore grade mineralization will be classed as waste and placed on dumps. The contributions to production and profits from dump leaching are insignificant, having minimal effect on the pit economics and design, because the material responds poorly to leaching solutions.

Production scheduling of an open-pit mine is one of the most important steps in open-pit mining. The mine&apos;s production schedule defines the distribution of cash flows and, as a result, directly influences the net present value (NPV) and overall economic feasibility of a project. The need to plan and operate a mine with an optimum production schedule has been obvious for some time, but the methods used to obtain such a schedule have not been so obvious. The current practice is to do a trial and error analysis by hand. In an attempt to improve the way production scheduling is currently done, a new computer based production scheduling algorithm was developed. This paper describes the fundamentals of this newly developed heuristic scheduling algorithm and its application to a gold deposit. The results of this case study show that the schedules, based on the new method, provide improved cash flows compared to production schedules done manually.
