In the past decade a principal growth area in refractory technology has been the development and use of extra high alumina refractories. The refractories user is asking for, and is prepared to pay for, higher purity, more dense materials with longer life, less maintenance, and better dimensional tolerance to meet the exacting demand of high output processes. High alumina and bauxite refractories are being used more and more to keep pace with the demand for guaranteed performance. The steel industry, for example, is starting to place great reliance on these products. A unique material now available with all the requirements for extreme purity and density is tabular alumina, already proving itself in many refractory applications.

A longterm overburden removal plan can be realistic and optimum only when the cost and capacity profiles off the equipment assigned to the operation are taken into consideration. Therefore, the planning should involve the proper assignment of equipment capacity by insuring a timely investment and a timely replacement policy throughout the mine life. A dynamic solution algorithm has been developed, by which all possible truck fleet alternatives are evaluated for each year off the operation. Cumulative cost off the operation is carried throughout the analysis. The optimum solution is obtained by selecting the minimum cumulative cost at the last year and tracing backward the best fleet alternative for each year. The solution provides: 1. the optimum amount of overburden to be removed each year; 2. the best fleet to be assigned to the job; and 3. the best equipment replacement policy.

The amenability of a calcite-bearing ore to the reduction of silica to below 0.2% by physical beneficiation was studied. The objective was to use the ore as a raw material for seawater magnesia production. The ore contains complex gangue minerals such as diopside, forsterite, phlogopite, clinohumite, graphite and quartz. These contribute to around 25% acid insolubles with 6% SiO2. Reverse-flotation studies using various cationic collectors with tannin as a depressant indicated the possibility of reducing the acid insolubles to around 5%. Direct flotation of calcite with anionic sodium oleate in the presence of sodium silicate and lactic acid as a depressant indicated the possibility of reducing the acid insolubles to below 3% and the SiO2 to from 0.2% to 0.3%. Lactic acid was found to be an effective depressant of the complex gangue minerals in the ore.

El modelamiento de la dinámica de fluidos computacional (CFD por sus siglas en inglés) implica la creación de un dominio de cálculo llamado malla o rejilla para resolver las ecuaciones que definen la física del flujo de fluidos. Este proceso comprende a menudo emplear la mayor parte del tiempo en esfuerzos de modelamiento. En un proyecto patrocinado por el Instituto Nacional de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional (NIOSH), los investigadores de la Escuela de Minas de Colorado utilizaron un enfoque innovador de mallas, el cual permite una fácil adaptación del modelo CFD para adaptarse a una variedad de geometrías de minado de tajos largos ventilados por canales (bleeders) y progresivamente sellados (referidos a menudo como bleederless en los Estados Unidos), con la porosidad y la permeabilidad de la cámara escalables en un amplio intervalo. En este trabajo se presenta la metodología del enfoque de enmallado y escalado junto con las recomendaciones para el uso de modelos CFD en aplicaciones de ventilación para las cámaras en tajos largos. A number of on-stream coal slurry analyzers are presently being developed and commercialized for measuring ash and solids in coal process streams, particularly around flotation circuits. The eventual goal of these efforts is to develop on-line quality control systems for flotation circuits and other fine-coal cleaning operations. As part of this on-line monitoring and control effort, it is important to gain a better understanding of the response of industrial flotation circuits to changing operating conditions. This paper summarizes the results from a detailed sampling program performed at an industrial coal flotation circuit in western Pennsylvania. The testing focused on evaluating the response of the circuit to changes in reagent dosages, operating conditions and feed compositions. The testing indicated that it is desirable to maintain high collector-to-frother ratios to enhance coarse particle flotation. The recovery of fine impurity particles was also proportional to water recovery, due to hydraulic entrainment. Key words: Industrial, Coal, Flotation, Circuit, Reagent, Response.

The chemical reactions that occur within a copper-leach recovery system are discussed, and the impact on the overall acid balance is evaluated. Both oxide and sulfide mineralogy are addressed, and their effects on acid consumption, generation and solution buffering are presented. Two case studies that apply the discussed chemistry show the practicality of using a computer spreadsheet acid-balance model for the early planning and design of copper-leach systems.

In the paper some interesting cases of applications of Operations Research and Computer Methods as worked out by the author and accepted by the management of some of the newly formed Indian mining organisation for implementation are highlighted. The main emphasis on the application cases was to use simple techniques and methods which yield the result in shorter time period, The case problems mainly deals with the production system optimisation in unit mines, areas/divisions and at the corporate levels. Also the management decisions regarding reorganisation of transport and distribution system of material and mineral are attempted to be optimised. Further, the case of management system development with computer aided decision making worked out for single large Iron Ore Project captive to a steel plant is outlined. Finally, the case of a large mining company having decentralised units and divisions geographically dispersed throughout the country, computerised management decision-information system designed on the basis of inputs and outputs of decision models relevant for different levels of management in the organisation is depicted.

Silicosis among metal miners is an ancient disease, probably as old as mining itself.' However, the primitive forms of mining were not productive of much silica dust, and the short life span of slaves used in mining probably precluded the development of more than a few sporadic cases of silicosis. Early diagnostic terms of miners' asthma and miners' phthisis suggested an occupational relationship and a tubercular component, but little attention was given to silicbsis until the turn of this century when epidemics of silico-tuberculosis arose due to the great expansion of the mining industry in the United States, especially silver and gold mining. The expansion was accompanied by mechanization and the introduction of pneumatic tools, which generated increasing amounts of fine silica dust. Mining communities were crowded and hygiene was poor.' The tubercle bacillus would probably have flourished even without the predisposition of silicosis.' As is so often the case in occupational health, biostatistical analyses first called attention to the problem, and environmental-medical studies later confirmed its existence. The bio-statistical analyses were occupational mortality statistics compiled by the Prudential Life Insurance Company in 1907, showing evidence of excessive mortality from tuberculosis and relationship to dust exposure. Dust produced during blasting in a copper/nickel based mine was studied and characterized. A stope utilizing the crater blasting technique, or the vertical retreat mining (VRM method), was examined. Two dust monitors were used to measure an airborne dust produced during blasting operations. The data collected in situ was primarily used to formulate the boundary value problem for a generalized equation that describes the transportation process of airborne dust from all places where dust is produced by the VRM mining method. The field data was also used to define the analytical forms for the initial and boundary conditions, to provide a simple and reliable equation for flow of dust in a stope vicinity, and to identify the non-measurable constants. The effects of the amount of blasting material and of the ventilation system in use on dust concentration are also discussed.

United Nations (UN) has been leading an international committee to define the guidelines in reporting resources and reserves. The system proposed by UN is very similar to the guidelines currently in use in Australia known as JORC guidelines (Joint Organisation Reserves Committee). The JORC guidelines show major differences in relation to the Brazilian system current in practice. The important aspects differing JORC from the current Brazilian guidelines for reporting reserves is the required sampling spacing. The JORC system requires the points of observation to be closer spaced than the Brazilian system for any class of resources. All classification systems share some common aspects in terms of defining the classes of resources based on distance separating samples and on the degree of confidence or accuracy associated with the results reported. Despite of being very clear in terms of stating sample distances, all the systems of classification do not provide clear definitions on how confidence limits should be calculated. This paper proposes a geostatistical framework to measure the uncertainty associated with the reported tonnages and grades. Results demonstrate that the error associated with an estimate can be approximated using multiple simulated deposits to define confidence limits. The methodology is illustrated in a large Brazilian coal deposit and proved to be appropriate to address the issue of quantifying the uncertainty necessary to be incorporated in the systems of reserves classification.

The opportunity to cooperate with the Mining Department of the Pennsylvania State University in their Student-Trainee Program is accepted by The New Jersey Zinc Company who believes that the participation in this type of a program will lead to a larger supply of high calibre engineers in mining. Trainees compete with other employees to earn the cost of their education while gaining practical experience in the mining industry. The practical experience is arranged to complement the technical education through a variety of work assignments. Job opportunities for the trainee are related to the work requirements of the Company and to the performance of the trainee. Management must consider and deal with a good many problems uncommon with regular, full 'time employees. For a number of reasons this program is recommended to other companies as a means to encourage outstanding young men who are interested in a career in the mineral industry to obtain a professiona1 education.

Knowing the depth of contacts between weathering zones in phosphate mines is determinant to define the stripping ratios and the mineralized zones. Contacts are gradational and difficult to define even in the drillhole samples, so the combination with geostatistical simulation techniques helps to define the contact zone and the grade distribution, providing a way to assess the probability of the occurrence and the positioning of contacts between the barren waste and the ore zones. These inputs are used in the scheduling, anticipating risks associated with mine planning scenarios. The results from an application to a case study showed a good improvement when compared to traditional techniques.

Hydrogen Peroxide and Caro's Acid (H2so5) were used to treat cyanide containjng effluents. Significant reagent savings were achieved by using Caro's Acid. Weak Acid Dissociable (W.A.D.) cyanides were removed at near stoichiometric levels of Caro's Acid. Hydrogen Peroxide showed poorer efficiency in the presence of W.A.D. cyanide complexes, resulting in higher consumption rates. Brazil is presently among the seven largest gold producing countries in the world. This paper discusses the evolution of gold mining through the history of Brazil. It also gives a general account of the present practices for mining, processing and extraction of gold. Flowsheets of some selected plants are presented. The environmental aspects involved with gold production are also considered.

"In current tunneling practice, finite element simulations have become an integral element of the planning and design process. These models are most often manually generated using 2D CAD drawings, which is a laborious and time consuming process. In this paper, we propose a BIM based approach, in which the 3D FE-model is automatically generated through a set of compatible geometries of individual components, i.e. the geology, alignment, lining and the TBM. The BIM model also includes all relevant model parameters of the tunneling project that can then be incorporated into subsequent analysis to be performed during the tunnel drive. The setup and the execution of the FE-analysis are performed automatically utilizing all required data from BIM. The applicability and efficiency of the proposed strategies is demonstrated by means of project data from the Wehrhahn-line metro project in Düsseldorf, Germany. Both the design as well as the construction stage is considered. INTRODUCTIONIt is recommend to employ Finite Element (FE) simulations in order to ensure a high degree of safety and quality for any given project (Guglielmetti et al. 2012). As such, FE models form an integral part in the design and planning stages of modern tunneling projects. These models are often time consuming to construct and require data from many different sources. This data is most often not centrally stored and therefore not easily accessible. Additionally, the formats in which project data are stored are typically not compatible with the formats required by an FE program. This is especially true in the case of geometrical data, such as CAD drawings. Although existing design drawings are most often used as the basis for a FE model, a direct import into a FE program is most often not successful as the imported data generates a geometry that does not fulfill the requirements of a FEM model, such as model connectivity. Even if a geometry is successfully imported, other necessary aspects of an FE model, such as boundary conditions and material properties, must be applied manually. These incompatibilities inevitably result in the creation of a new model, which, especially in the case of complex 3D models, is a time consuming process."

Conventional disposal of waste rock results in the construction of benches with fine and coarse layers dipping at the angle of repose. This interbedded structure influences flow pathways within the waste rock. A numerical modeling program was conducted to study a four-layer system consisting of alternating fine and coarse waste rock. The system was inclined from the vertical to forty-five degrees with heights varying from one to twenty meters. The results show the effects of gravity as preferential flow developed under unsaturated flow conditions.

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling involves the creation of a computation domain called a mesh or grid to solve the equations defining the physics of fluid flow. This process often comprises the majority of time spent in modeling efforts. In a project sponsored by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), researchers at the Colorado School of Mines used an innovative meshing approach, allowing easy adaptation of the CFD model to adjust to a variety of longwall bleeder-ventilated and progressively sealed (often referred to as bleederless in the United States) mining geometries, with gob porosity and permeability scalable over a wide range. This paper presents the methodology of the meshing and scaling approach along with recommendations for using CFD modeling in longwall gob ventilation applications. The new meshing technique was utilized to evaluate the function of a back return in a progressively sealed gob and a bleeder-ventilated gob.

Caro's (peroxymonosulfuric) acid has been reported to destroy WAD (weakly acid dissociable) CN-but, until recently, the technology has not been demonstrated in other than a laboratory setting. During the last two years, Caro's acid has been shown to successfully detoxify WAD CN-in tailings at two large North American gold mines. Using on-site FMC generators, Caro's acid reduced the WAD CN-from 40-55 ppm to below 20-35 ppm WAD CN-, the target range for the two mines. The detoxification costs using Caro's acid were less than 50% of the treatment cost of using hydrogen peroxide, the previous oxidant of choice. In addition to the considerable savings in CN-detoxification costs, lower WAD CN-values were achieved and the detoxification time with Caro's acid was greatly reduced compared to hydrogen peroxide.

Gold mining has undergone a massive revival in Australia within the past decade. With very few exceptions, these operations are involved with the development of deposits which have been previously and partially worked by underground methods. In most cases, current operations have involved the open cut mining of near-surface remnants or low-grade hanging wall and footwall mineralisation. A growing number of mines are, however, progressing to the development of underground workings either as extensions of existing open cuts or as "stand alone" projects. These operations vary in scale from the Kalgoorlie operations of North Kalgurli Mines Limited and Kalgoorlie Mining Associates to the small scale "gouging" operations of individuals and partnerships. The individual production rates rarely exceed 200 000 tonnes per year, primarily because of the magnitude of reserves or the style of access available for rehabilitation. The narrow-vein mines were initially re-opened using the traditional methods, in particular shrinkage stoping and cut-and-fill stoping. As a result of experience gained in various ground conditions, certain variants have become popular. This paper investigates the fate of the traditional methods in Australian practice, and reviews some of the recently applied variants. This involves not only a perusal of current practices, but also an assessment of the influence of recent technological development on the economics of narrow-vein mining. Some consideration is also given to the effects of previously employed stoping techniques on efforts to access remnant blocks in the re-development of old mines.
