A test has been devised that can predict accurately the % crystallinity developed in a slag film formed between the steel strand and the mould. The % crystallinity in the test samples was determined and compared with that for slag films formed in the mould when casting with that flux. There was good agreement between the % crystallinity in the test samples and the slag films. It was found that additions of TiO2and ZrO2had little effect on the amount of crystalline phase formed, but additions of CaO caused a dramatic increase in the amount of crystalline phase formed. Various parameters (which can be calculated from chemical composition of the flux) have been plotted against % crystallinty in the test samples. It was found that the modified (NBO/T) ratio provided the best relation with % crystallinity for the various parameters tested. There commended relation is % crystallinity=141.1(NBO/T)-284.0. The reaction between carbon and slags is of significant importance in direct smelting of iron ores, EAF slag foaming and copper slag cleaning processes. This reaction is known to occur via gaseous intermediates and it is important to have fundamental data to understand the relative importance of each reaction step. In this study, the rate of CO2dissociation on different slag surfaces is measured using an isotope exchange technique. It was found that increasing iron oxide content up to 30 wt per cent does not have a significant effect on the rate constant while increasing from this limit, increases the rate constant dramatically. Activation energy of CO2dissociation on slags of unit basicity and different iron oxide contents is in the range of 180±40 kJ/mol. It is found that rate constant dependence on oxygen potential in the slag phase is increasing with iron oxide concentration. In the case of copper making slags, the influence of copper oxide is found to increase the magnitude of apparent rate constant, while decreasing the activation energy considerably. This paper presents a matrix formulation of factorial kriging, and its relationships with simple and ordinary kriging. Similar to other kriging methods, factorial kriging can be applied to both stationary and intrinsic stochastic processes, and is often used as a local operator. Therefore, the concepts of intrinsic random function and local stationarity are first briefly reviewed. Kriging is presented in a block matrix form in which the kriging solution is useful not only for understanding the relationships between simple and ordinary kriging methods, but also the relationships between interpolative kriging and factorial kriging. When used as a signal/noise-filtering method, factorial kriging is especially useful for multiscale modelling. Examples for general signal analysis and geophysical data signal filtering are given to illustrate the method..

The project was aimed at evaluating the double-header trains implemented at Great Noligwa mine, looking at the changes from the old conventional trains to the new trains, and identifying possible improvements to obtain an even better and more productive tramming system. The methods used to evaluate the double-header trains at the mine included personal observations, time studies, personal interviews, technical research, safety analysis, cost analysis, production analysis, breakdown analysis, break test analysis, comparisons and working closely with engineering department and manufacturers. Issues that were evaluated are the improvements in safety, cost reductions, tramming congestion reductions, better efficiencies, labour optimization, enhanced driver safety and maintenance. Shortcomings of the double-header trains were identified and recommendations made to improve on the shortcomings. Findings of the evaluation study indicated the following: ?Drastic improvement on safety ?Extreme cost reductions ?Reduction in tramming congestions and bottlenecks ?Better tramming efficiencies ?Optimized labour placement ?Enhanced driver safety ?More effective maintenance. Although there is room for improvements, the double-header trains were implemented with great success at Great Noligwa mine. It is currently the preferred tramming methodology at Great Noligwa mine, and is also implemented at other Anglo Gold Ashanti?South Africa shafts. This tramming system has huge potential for growth, not only in Anglo Gold Ashanti, but in all other older mines that experience major tramming problems.

The objective with mine planning is to consistently deliver production conforming to quality and quantity requirements throughout the life of the mine. The complexity of the operational context of the modern mine extends far beyond the actual production actions and there is a need to find ways of analysing and managing this extended environment. A well-established approach to handling complex situations rely on the creation of representative models that use classification and visualization strategies. An example of the use of a classification scheme is the periodic table of the elements. All physical matter can be expressed as combinations of basic elements. Not only is the periodic table useful in classifying and identifying matter but it can also be used for the prediction of the properties of unknown matter and compositions of elements.

Dr R. E. Robinson, Pr. Eng., obtained a B.sc. (Chem. Eng.) cum laude from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1950 and a Ph.D. (Eng.) from the same University in 1953, where he was awarded the Haikes Memorial Medal for Industrial Chemistry. Professor G. G. Garrett was appointed Professor of Physical and :Fabrication Metallurgy in the Department of Metallurgy at the University of the Witwatersrand in June 1980, and in January 1984 he became Head of the Department. Mr P. A. van Wielligh, Pr. Eng., climbed the mining ladder in the hard way, starting as a Mine Surveyor in 1936 and working his way up as Chief Surveyor, Underground Manager, Mine Manager, and Consulting Engineer, to Executive Director, including the intermediate steps. Mr H. E. James, Pr. Eng., is a graduate in Chemical Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand. Both his B.sc. degree (1961) and his M.sc. degree (1964) were obtained on bursaries, the former from Gold Fields of South Africa and the latter from the Atomic Energy Board. Mr G. Pienaar, Pr. Eng., obtained a B.Eng. (Met) in 1967 and an M.Eng. in 1973, both from the University of Pretoria. Dr A. K. Haines, Pr. Eng., obtained all his degrees from the University of Natal, finishing with a. Ph.D. in 1971. Mr B. C. Alberts, Pr. Eng., obtained his academic training at the University of Pretoria, where he was awarded B.sc. degrees in both agricultural engineering (1963) and mining engineering (1965). Mr H. C. van Zyl, Pr. Eng., holds B.sc. degrees in mining engineering (1968) and civil engineering (1972), both from the University of Pretoria.

A new process comprising metallizing reduction, magnetic separation, and electroheat melting separation is proposed with the aim of achieving high recoveries of iron, vanadium, and titanium from vanadium titanomagnetite. The effects of magnetic intensity, reduction temperature, reduction time, carbon ratio, and coal particle size on the efficiency of reductionmagnetic separation were investigated, the reaction mechanisms elucidated by SEM and EDS analysis, and the optimal process parameters established. Recoveries of up to 80.08% for titanium, 95.07% for iron, and 71.60% for vanadium were achieved. The reduction sequence is shown to be: Fe2O3 ? Fe3O4 ? FeO ? Fe; Fe2TiO5 ? Fe2TiO4 + TiO2 ? Fe + FeTiO3 ? Fe + FeTi2O5 ? Fe + TiO2.

High-rate floc-blanket clarification of gold pregnant rotary filtrate was introduced at the Vaal Reefs South gold plant of the Anglo American Corporation during February 1978. A. daily 12 000 to 15 000 t of filtrate, with an average suspended-solids concentration of 350 mg/I, is continuously clarified to a concentration of less than 2S mg/I of suspended solids in a modified plant pachuca (10 m in diameter) at throughput rates of 7,7 to 8,5 ma/m2.h by the addition of 5 g/t of ferric chloride inorganic coagulant and 0,2 g/t of Superfloc NI00 flocculant. The pachuca overflow is then clarified further in seven Stellar candle pressure filters of 54,S m2 surface area to under 5 mg/I of suspended solids. The combined clarification cost when the hopper clarifier is used in conjunction with the Stellar filters is R0,0032 per ton of liquid treated, which is approximately 60 per cent lower than the cost of Stellar filtration on its own. The savings are mainly due to the reduced use of filter pre-coat, the consumption of which has dropped by 70 per cent since the introduction of hopper clarification.

Since then, the division has become established in various industries such as ferro-alloys and non-ferrous metals, and in numerous other special applications. During the evolution of this technology, more efficient units with longer lifetimes were developed. Today, especially the potential of DC-based smelters, raises worldwide attention, with some projects having already started to implement this kind of technology. This paper evaluates SMS Siemag?s general viewpoint regarding the potential application of DC smelter technology and possible options for the ferro-alloy and non-ferrous industry. SMS Siemag is currently executing a FeCr project in Kazakhstan, where four of the world?s largest closed-type DC smelting furnaces, with a power input of 72 MW, will be installed. These furnaces include the latest technological features of modern DC smelters, which are described in this paper. SMS Siemag has started a long-term research and development project allowing a direct comparison of AC versus DC technology on a large scale, using a recently installed 1 MVA test furnace at the IME at the University of Aachen, in Germany. For open-type ferro-alloy and Si-metal furnaces, SMS Siemag has developed an energy recovery system, which is presented in this paper.

Laser surface melting has been conducted on a 304 stainless steel (SS) with the aim of enhancing pitting corrosion resistance of the material. This process involves rapid melting of the material?s surface followed by rapid solidification to refine the microstructure. This includes the dissolution of inclusions such as MnS, FeS, CrxCy, and other minor constituents. The microstructures as a result of laser treatment were observed by means of optical microscope and also confirmed by the XRD. The glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GDOES) was utilized for chemical analysis. Changes in hardness were observed by using a Vickers microhardness tester. Pitting corrosion tests on laser treated and untreated samples were conducted according to ASTM G48-92 to evaluate mass loss and pitting morphology. Laser surface melting improved the pitting corrosion resistance of this material in a chloride-containing environment.

"What affects and influences one’s perspective of the mining and metallurgical industries?One’s perspective of the industry we work in changes over time as a function of our experience as well as from the interaction we have with colleagues locally and probably even more so with those internationally. Furthermore, the ever-changing environment continues to impact the context in which one sees things. Living mostly in South Africa through its changes in the past fi fty years but also having the opportunity to travel extensively and work on projects abroad adds an invaluable richness to this more global perspective. One of the greatest challenges is how best to use this experience to endeavour to support the many potential opportunities in southern as well as sub-Saharan Africa. However, one has also to face the realities of how the best interests of the country and its peoples are sadly often not well served for various unfortunate reasons. Investment, education, regional stability, and good governance are some of the most critical considerations for the prosperity and survival of the region.The mining and metallurgical industry in southern and sub-Saharan Africa changed significantly during the post-colonial and apartheid eras as a result of global and regional developments that have impacted the ownership of businesses, the technologies used, and products produced in a manner that was not envisaged even fi fty years ago. Southern Africa’s mining and metallurgical industry has progressed from one based mostly on diamonds and gold in the late 19th century to a much more diverse one that involves the production of a variety of other precious, base, and ferrous metals and minerals as well as coal and industrial minerals. The infrastructure and manufacturing capacity was largely developed to meet the needs of this industry during its growth phases, but even though the dynamics have changed there is still a need for more efficient and effective support systems in the region."

A new system for granting access to mineral rights is proposed in the recently released White Paper, ?A Minerals and Mining Policy for South Africa?. Official policy states that ?Government?s long-term objective is for all mineral rights to vest in the State for the benefit of and on behalf of all the people of South Africa?. In order to achieve this objective, government is presently investigating the feasibility of imposing a financial or tax-related disincentive to holding mineral rights. The paper aims to present the pros and cons and to examine the alternatives which will cause minimal disruption to the minerals industry in the period during which mineral rights are transferred to the State. South Africa is a country whose economic and political history is embedded in the development of its mineral resources and has inherited a system which cannot simply be wished away. Hasty or radical decisions will compound the problem, rather than provide a lasting and widely acceptable solution. Mineral rights ownership and its impact on access to mineral deposits are discussed. Taxation as a possible economic disincentive is also evaluated. Finally, the value of mineral resource related information as a prerequisite to mineral policy decisions and as an alternative to mineral rights taxation is emphasized.

The data set often contains one or more secondary variables. These secondary variables are usually spatially cross correlated with the primary variable. The addition of the cross-correlated information reduces the variance of the estimation error by using the cokriging method. The grade estimation results of ordinary kriging and cokriging methods are evaluated and it was found that the estimation variance of cokriging method is slightly lower than ordinary kriging. The effect of variation of block dimension on the estimation results is also investigated and it was seen that the cokriging estimation variance values also decrease as the block dimension increases.

The definition of mineral rents has historically been somewhat unclear, but a growing understanding of the source and composition of the revenues that comprise these rents mean that they can be more easily identified and quantified. Furthermore the way in which the flow of the rents from mineral developments are captured and then distributed has been a point of contention amongst the various stakeholders. Investors, the host government, the resource owners, environmental interests, indigenous groups and land owners are identified in this paper as the principal participants in mineral development and while each is entitled to a portion of the rent, the size of their portions will differ. A competitive rent-sharing model for southern African countries has been established and indicates how the range of stakeholders could be rewarded for their contribution. Acceptance of the sharing ratios amongst the recipients is a function of their understanding of the size of the rent and their position in the hierarchy of stakeholders. At first glance investors appear to receive the largest share of the rent, but they disburse some of the rent to hidden costs, which when all is said and done, means that investors and host governments retain approximately equal shares of the mineral rent. Both the investor and government are faced with the dilemma of how to equitably distribute the rents they have captured to minority stakeholders. Government captures corporate tax, mineral royalties and a wide range of subordinate taxes, but is required to construct policies that will ensure distributional equity among the various levels of government as well as among the provinces that comprise the country. Investors will have to ensure that a portion of the rents they capture are diverted to other stakeholders namely resource owners, environmental interests, indigenous peoples groups and the landowners. This paper identifies the major recipients of rent and provides some indication of equitable distribution ratios for mineral wealth among them?a first step in ensuring that mineral development is compatible with long-term sustainable development and in the best national interests.

Quantitative seismology is an important tool for investigating mineinduced seismicity and the quantification of the seismic rock mass response. The spatio-temporal interpretation of seismic data within an ever-changing three-dimensional mining environment provides some challenges to the interpretation of the rock mass response. A grid-based approach for the interpretation of spatial variation of the rock mass response provides some benefits compared with approaches based on spatial filters. This paper discusses a grid-based interpretation of seismic data. The basic methods employed in the evaluation of the parameter values through space are discussed and examples of applications to different mine sites given.

"SynopsisThe relationship between niobium content and austenite grain growth has been investigated through hot rolling simulation on a Bähr dilatometer. The effect of delay time between passes during rough rolling in Nbmicroalloyed steels with nitrogen contents typical for electric arc furnace (EAF) melting was studied. The results indicate that the grain growth constants n, Q, and A increase with an increase in Nb content. The activation energy for austenite grain growth Q was found to be in the range of 239 to 572 kJ/mol, the exponential constant n ranged from 2.8 to 6.2, and the material and processing condition constant A from 4.24 × 1012 to 4.96 × 1028, for steels with niobium contents ranging from 0.002% Nb to 0.1% Nb. A general constitutive equation for the prediction of austenite grain growth in these Nb-microalloyed steels under rough rolling conditions has been developed. Good agreement between the experimental and the predicted values was achieved with this constitutive equation.IntroductionGrain refinement has been found to increase both the strength and toughness of steels (Gao and Baker, 1998; Sharma, Lakshmanan, and Kirkaldy, 1984; Seok et al., 2014; Maalekian et al., 2012). It is also known that the austenite grain size directly influences the microstructure, and thus the mechanical properties, of the steel (Maalekian et al., 2012; Yue et al., 2010). Effective grain growth control is reported to be achieved through addition of precipitate-forming elements, such as Nb that, slow down the grain boundary migration through pinning and solute drag mechanisms (Yu et al., 2010; Olasolo et al., 2011; Alogab et al., 2007). Much work has been carried out on austenite grain lsize control by the addition of precipitate-forming elements that have a strong affinity for interstitial elements, such as carbon and nitrogen, which form the dispersed pinning particles to inhibit the austenite grain growth (Alogab et al. 2007; Hodgson and Gibbs, 1992; Nanba et al., 2003; Flores and Martinez, 1997; Rollett, Srolovitz and Anderson, 1989). Austenite grain growth can be described using a conventional or a modelling approach. With conventional approaches (e.g. metallography), in-situ monitoring of austenite grain growth at high temperatures is impossible. Modelling the grain growth behaviour based on available data is the ideal option. To quantitatively describe austenite grain growth therefore requires development of a sound mathematical austenite grain growth equation that accounts for the effects of the varying microalloying elements in inhibiting austenite grain growth. Numerous attempts have been made to develop an empirical model based on the general equation developed by Sellars and Whiteman (1979). Many of these models do not account for the direct effects of the microalloying elements such as Nb in austenite grain growth control [Fu et al., 2011; Wang and Wang, 2008; Wang et al., 2006; Shanmugama et al., 2005; Banerjee et al., 2010; Pous-Romeroa et al., 2013). The current work has considered this limitation, taking into account the direct effect of niobium in grain growth control during thermal processing. This is done by incorporating the initial austenite grain size Do and the microalloying element niobium in the development of a constitutive equation for grain growth prediction in Nb-containing microalloyed steels."

On the basis of in situ study of pillar loading at different sites, an attempt is made in this paper to visualize the development of mining induced stress under varying geo-mining conditions. Field study demonstrated interesting interaction between size of pillar and nature of roof rock mass under the influence of increasing dimension of the excavation. Stiffness of pillars/overburden, extraction ratio and depth cover are observed to be the important parameters for the estimation of mining induced stress over the pillar. These parameters influence, both, the value of ultimate induced stress (vertical) and its range of influence ahead of the face line. Further, it is observed that the change in width/height (w/h) ratio of a pillar has got considerable influence over the nature of mining induced stress over it. Impact of highly dynamic nature of mining induced stress over the natural supports is observed to be the most serious factor for the safety of working under a hard and massive roof rock mass. On the basis of these observations, a conceptual model of interaction between the natural support and overlying strata is discussed in the paper. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Aufgrund ist in situ Studium von Säule Beladung an verschiedenen Stellen, ein Versuch in diesem Papier gemacht, die Entwicklung des Bergbaus vostellen sich, Spannung unter Änderung von Geo Bergbau von Bedingungen hat veranlaßt. Feld Studium hat interessante Wechselwirkung zwischen Größe von Säule und Natur von Dach Felsen Masse unter dem Einfluß von Vermehrung Dimension des excavation vorgeführt. Steifheit des Säulen Overburden, Herausziehung Verhältnisses und Tiefe sind beobachtet bedeckt, die wichtigen Parameter für die Schätzung des Bergbaus zu sein, Spannung über der Säule hat veranlaßt. Diese Parameter beeinflussen, beide, der Wert allerletzter veranlaßter Spannung (senkrecht) und sein Bereich des Einflusses voraus von der Gesicht Linie. Weiter ist, es beobachtet, daß die Änderung in Breite Höhe (W H) Verhältnis einer Säule beträchtlichen Einfluß über der Natur des Bergbaus erhalten hat, Spannung hat darüber veranlaßt. Schlag sehr dynamischer Natur des Bergbaus ist Spannung über den natürlichen Stützen beobachtet hat veranlaßt, der ernsteste Faktor für die Sicherheit des Arbeitens unter einer harten und massiven Dach Felsen Masse zu sein. Aufgrund dieser Beobachtungen, ein begriffliches Modell der Wechselwirkung zwischen der natürlichen Stütze und der überlagernde strata ist im Papier diskutiert. RESUME: En se basant sur dans l'étude de situ de chargement de pilier aux sites différents, une tentative est faite dans ce papier pour envisager le développement de creuse la tension persuadée sous varier de conditions de geo creuse. L'étude de champs a démontré l'interaction intéressante entre la taille de pilier et la nature de masse de rocher de toit sous l'influence d'augmenter de dimension de l'excavation. La raideur de piliers overburden, la proportion d'extraction et la couverture de profondeur est observée pour être les paramètres importants pour le jugement de creuse la tension persuadée par-dessus le pilier. Ces paramètres influencent, les deux, la valeur de tension persuadée ultime (vertical) et sa gamme d'influence en avant de la ligne de face. One of the valuation approaches applied to Advanced Exploration Areas and Pre-Development Projects is the so-called ?in situ Mineralization Method? or the ?Yardstick Method?. This method is based on the concept of a known undeveloped Mineral Resource being worth a certain fraction (the ?Yardstick?) of the contained commodity value (?metal in ground?), using commodity prices ruling at the date of valuation. The Yardstick value is derived usually from an average market-based figure obtained from an analysis of recent transactions and is expressed as a monetary value per ounce or per tonne. It maybe modified to accommodate the quality (e.g. grade) and category (e.g. confidence level) of the Mineral Resource/Reserve involved and the time, effort and expenditure expected to be involved in bringing the project to fruition. Some eighteen recent and relevant transactions were analysed, allowing the following general conclusions to be reached: ? a Yardstick with which to value undeveloped PGE mineral resources is likely to range between 0.5% and 2.5% of the in-ground contained metal value ? the expected method of mining (especially with regard to mining costs) and the grade of the mineralization both have a strong influence on the Yardstick ? the status (classification) of the Mineral Resource has some influence on the Yardstick and ? the ruling price of platinum and the regional location of the deposit appear to have insignificant influences on the Yardstick.
