Union Corporation are experimenting with a high-pressure water jet to remove blasted rock from short panels. The advantages are that the jet provides a highly efficient, flexible, and mobile cleaning tool that eliminates much of the lashing. Cost estimates show it to compare favourably with the existing system, with potential savings of 30 cents per ton milled. Equipment and method trials are continuing with the ultimate objective of eliminating hand lashing entirely while retaining the flexibility of the present method of mining.

The Copperbelt areas of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have recently been seeing the development of a significant number of new projects. Due to the current economic climate, some of these projects have been delayed but the region remains an important resource for copper and cobalt for future years. Many of these projects will utilize an agitation leach followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning to recover both copper and cobalt. The flowsheet route for copper is fairly well established while the processing options for cobalt vary considerably depending on the final product (metal or salt) the operator wishes to make. The mineralogy of ores in the area is typically associated with high gangue acid consumption during the leaching process. This has resulted in acid availability to the area being constrained and acid prices have risen accordingly. Agitation leach circuits, typically, have a tight water balance which needs to be maintained and a bleed of process liquor needs to be continuously removed from the circuit in order to maintain this balance. This bleed, typically, contains fairly high levels of acid and requires neutralization prior to tailings disposal or secondary metal recovery. It is, therefore, desirable to minimize the acid concentration in this bleed stream in order to decrease total acid requirements and neutralization costs for the process plant. An in depth case study by Cognis and Bateman Engineering evaluated three different flowsheets with the aim of determining relative operating costs between the three alternatives, together with differences in plant capital cost requirements.

In many automated mines, multi media video and audio funtionality has to be combined with sensor information or steering commands, which is the idea of a new, PC based integrated and multi media capable control system. The new control system (Multimedia Control - MMC) bases entirely on TCP/IP networking and internet technology. For the first time, this enables the ‘intelligent’ use of video and audio information: pictures and voice sequences may be forwarded on request only, they may be stored if particular events occur (e.g. video black boxes) and sensor signals as well as actions from the automation system can directly be assigned with multi media sequences. MultiMedia Control entirely bases on object oriented software. It uses most modern software technology. As user interface, only a standard web browser is required. This makes the handling of different machines easy. By using mobile web pads, dedicated local operator interfaces are not required any longer. The service staff just connects to the automated equipment by – wireless –LAN to make required adjustments. Customization is easy using an open Application Programming Interface. Software modules may be added to the system without touching or recompiling existing components. The system was prototyped in 2000 using a demo-application. The performance tests showed very positive results both regarding the control system behaviour and the speed/latency timing behaviour of the multi-media information processed. The system now is slightly reshaped to completely meet the final product requirements. It is expected to be available by the end of 2001. It is particularly pleasant to be able to extend a warm South African welcome to al our visitors from foreign shores. We trust you will enjoy your stay in our country. It is a singular honour for me to be present here today, and to have been asked to open this international Symposium. MINING IN SOUTH AFRICA Mining is the single most important contributor to this country's foreign-exchange earnings. Minerals and processed mineral products together account for about 70 per cent of South Africa's total foreign exchange earnings. The mining sector employs in excess of 670 000 people, and is one of the largest employers in the country. The construction and development of cities and towns like Johannesburg, Welkom, Orkney, Springs, Benoni, Witbank, and Klerksdorp is a direct result of the contributions of the mining industry to economic activity in these areas, as well as of the multiplier effect of secondary industries.

Simulation is a way to obtain quickly today future information on how planned systems will most likely behave in various selected situations. This information may then be used to optimize the system and its components and maximize the performance and output. Simulation is a way to fine-tune the layout, match the mobile fleet and optimize the schedule and the way of working to meet the desired production requirements. Simulation provides a glimpse of the upcoming operation, ‘future today’ and helps to predict its restrictions and sensitivity to various aspects. OptiMine™, the Sandvik Tamrock Corp. and CyberCube Oy developed simulation tool is designed to simulate underground rock flow and match suitable technology with various layout options. This tool can be used to view what-if situations and determine what kind of impact mastered changes have to production. The findings of critical points in the layout and working procedures at an early stage of a new mine can help to optimize the layout and material flow. OptiMine™is modular based simulation tool that combines the supplier machine knowledge and traffic guidance with mine operational know-how and mine environment. It is developed to work in a way that an effect of an individual incident, such as the effect of one additional turn in a continuous loading cycle to the daily capacity can be identified. The reported output can be used for economical impact evaluation of selected options. This paper discusses the use of simulation in general and the way the OptiMine™ simulation tool operates and how it may be used for operation, technology and material flow optimization.

BrownProfessor Gregory has had a wide experience of hardrockmetalliferous mining throughout the world, beinga well-known academic who has taught at many universitiesin the Western World. His basic training was obtainedin his native land of Australia. In this publication he identified the need for a basic, simple book on miningpractice to provide new students of mining with a backgroundto their studies. He also designed the book to providea background to persons operating on the fringesof the industry such as students of economics and journalists.The text extends to only some 120 pages, and containsa sufficient number of monochrome sketches, diagrams,and photographs. It is written in a straight-forward, easyto-read style. The book contains an index and elementarytable of conversion from imperial to SI (metric) units,and there is also a glossary of mining terms that mostreaders would find useful.The author has succeeded in keeping the contentssimple, as indicated by the title. However, after each chapter, there are references to further recommendedreading. The book could be useful in the South African context, although the coverage of coal and opencast mining operations is slender.

Many open pit mines are now being mined at very significant depths, often at depths far greater than was originally planned. Even deeper open pits are also being planned, to depths that would be considered deep by underground standards. The heights of the resulting rock slopes are usually beyond the current experience and knowledge base. The exceptions are, perhaps, some very high and steep natural rock slopes. These natural rock slopes are also assuming greater significance owing to pressures of infrastructure development and consequent exposure of such infrastructure to the hazards of slope failure and landslides. Developments in road and rail infrastructure are also resulting in higher rock cuttings. Present understanding of the mechanisms of slope behaviour and failure for high slopes, and for slopes subjected to high in situ stress conditions, appears to be lacking. If the mechanisms of slope behaviour are not well understood, the validity of commonly applied methods of analysis of the stability of such slopes may be questionable. The papers in this specialist International Symposium, including papers on mechanisms and monitoring techniques, and case studies will contribute to the understanding of these issues. The Symposium has attracted good international participation, from both the attendance and authorship points of view. We are very grateful to all presenters and delegates for taking timeout of their very busy schedules to come and share their knowledge and we hope that all will benefit from this event. Thanks are due to the Organising Committee and to the members of our International Advisory Panel for the ideas, the contacts and the badgering, and to the Secretariat of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for the organisation.

The role of hardenability in the development of high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels is discussed. The applicability of the superhardenability treatment. a steel making technique for increased hardenability, to HSLA steels is indicated, and the literature on this treatment is reviewed. Several low-carbon superhardenability HSLA steels were designed by use of published superhardenability multiplying factors. It was found that the hardenability of these low-carbon steels can be increased to the same extent as that of medium-carbon steels. The mechanical properties as determined in normalized bars indicate that the superhardenability treatment can be used successfully in the production of low-carbon hot-rolled HSLA steels.

The addition of binder to full plant tailings significantly affects the rheology of a backfill mixture and, consequently, the pressure gradients in the pipeline. The binder increases the yield stress and apparent viscosity of the mixture, and the transition velocity between the laminar and turbulent flow regimes. In a test conducted at a slurry relative density of 1,72 with binder addition, the mixture also exhibited time-dependent behaviour owing to the hydration of the binder.

For the past thirteen years, the Universities of Cape Town and Stellenbosch have hosted an annual symposium to discuss topics relevant to mineral processing. Since 1987, this Symposium has been held under the auspices of the Western Cape Branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and has become one of the main events on the national conference calendar. In 1989 and 1993, the symposia took the shape of international conferences. This year the 13th Annual Mineral Processing Symposium was organized by the two universities, the Cape Technikon, and the local branch of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and was held at the Van Riebeeck Hotel in Gordon's Bay.

Throughout the history of mining, underground fires or explosions have killed many hundreds or thousands of people. Fortunately, the safety record has gradually improved as a result of many people’s work on improving safety standards and work practices. However, fire and explosion still remains a threat in many situations. As a result the UK Mines Inspectorate commissioned a project to study materials used underground and to develop a fire/explosion risk assessment system. Such a system has been developed, following the study of incidents, specified fire resistance criteria, and fire safety practices. The final methodology uses a series of check sheets to identify potential fuels and ignition sources, preventative measures, fire/explosion mitigation systems, and items for inclusion in emergency plans.

The selection of the most suitable mechanized mining strategy has to consider the geotechnical environment in which it will be operating. A mechanized mining method or machine is designed to a given set of specifications to work within an environment. The geological conditions that define this environment are fixed—detailed information of these conditions for design specifications is thus critical. Two major classes of geotechnical parameters are defined—critical and design. The critical controlling factors are a result of mineral composition, size, shape, abundance, assemblage and associated texture, as well as discontinuity type and orientation. Design parameters are specific to each deposit, and their nature cannot be broadly described, as with the critical factors. It is shown that for major deposits in South Africa, namely the Witwatersrand Basin (gold), the Bushveld Igneous Complex (PGEs) and the Karoo Coalfields that by incorporating geological and geotechnical information that appropriate mechanized mining methods can be deduced, and that the performance and design parameters of specific technologies can be determined

ABSTRACT The recently introduced concept of negative taxation complicates estimation of the distributable profit of certain South African gold mines, and an assisted mine could operate at a working loss and yet produce an overall profit for distribution amongst its shareholders. A simple diagram is presented from which the approximate working profit or loss, taxation payable or tax credit received, and the distributable profit of an assisted mine can be estimated directly for any combination of the four main variable operational factors: tonnage milled, recovery grade, unit cost and capital expenditure. INTRODUCTION The effects on the working profits of South African Gold mines caused by changes in unit working costs, recovery grade, tonnage milled and capital expenditure are readily estimated. For normal tax- and lease-paying mines the distributable profit is related to the working profit and the latter is a commonly accepted comparative measure of the profitability of an operation. However, the recently introduced concept of State assistance in the form of negative taxation1, i.e. a tax credit, for mines with a life of less than eight years complicates such estimates. A requirement of State assistance is that an assisted mine must lower its normal pay limit by 16 to 20 per cent, and it will be possible for a mine to operate at a working loss and yet produce an overall profit for distribution amongst its shareholders. In the case of an assisted mine it is therefore necessary for management to judge the effects of changes in unit costs, grade, etc., in terms of distributable profit instead of working profit. This will require repeated calculation of tax to be paid or tax credits that will be received under the numerous possible combinations of the four main variable factors. However, with the aid of the diagram illustrated in Fig. 1, it is possible to assess at a glance the practical effect of these variables on the distributable profit of an operation not subject to tax on the normal formula, or small mine formula, with sufficient accuracy to decide whether a detailed analysis is required. USE OF THE DIAGRAM From the central point 'X' in Fig. 1, a range of tonnages milled per annum has been plotted along the north-bearing axis, a series of costs per ton milled in the northwestern quadrant, recovery grades in the northeastern quadrant, and capital expenditures in the southwestern quadrant. Starting from the tonnage milled per annum, a line is drawn east and west across the two northern quadrants up to the points where it reaches the desired cost- and grade-lines. From these points two north-south lines are drawn into the southern quadrants. A further line is drawn to the east from the point where the western north-south line crosses the desired capital expenditure.
