Since the first application of solvent extraction as part of the hydrometallurgical processing of copper, several studies have been carried out to optimize extractant formulations. In 2006, Solvay developed the ACORGA® OPT series of solvent-extraction reagents to optimize copper transfer by use of a blended formulation containing both aldoxime and ketoxime as well as selected modifiers. The incorporation of selected modifiers in these blended reagents resulted in increased copper transfer, due to the interaction between the modifier and oximes within the blend. By changing the ketoxime concentration and ratio of modifier to aldoxime, the strength of the formulation was optimized to enhance copper transfer and improve Cu:Fe selectivity. This formulation is well known in the African region under the ACORGA® OPT5540 name and provides the best performance at the conditions of agitated leach plants with pregnant leach solutions that fluctuate in Cu grade and pH. One of the most important characteristics of tabular mine stress analysis is the need to represent the complex evolution of mining face positions and the accompanying induced stress changes in the rock mass. Integration of seismic activity with numerical modelling requires flexible and efficient solution schemes in which both off-reef damage and large-scale fault slip can be effectively represented. A new approach is investigated in which the stope closure and ride variables can be found using a moving least squares estimator. Some advantages of this approach over traditional element-based tessellation schemes are identified. At the same time, shortcomings of this method are noted when the displacement discontinuity variable is approximated by a polynomial shape function. Difficulties and possible solutions to the shape function formulation near excavation edges are discussed. Une des caractéristiques les plus importantes de l’analyse des contraintes minières tabulaires est la nécessité de représenter la complexe évolution des positions du front de taille et des changements concomitants des contraintes occasionnées dans la masse rocheuse. L’intégration de l’activité sismique avec la modélisation numérique requiert des projets souples et efficaces qui permettent la représentation des dommages hors-filon et des glissements de faille à grande échelle. Une approche nouvelle est étudiée qui permet de trouver la fermeture de la taille et les variables de montage en utilisant un estimateur par les moindres carrés mobile. Certains des avantages de cette approche sur les traditionnels projets basés sur une structure en mosaïque sont identifiés. En même temps, les défauts de cette méthode sont notés lorsqu’on calcule la variable de discontinuité du déplacement approximativement par une fonction de forme polynomiale. Eine der wichtigsten Charaketeristika der taublaren Grubenspannungsanalayse ist die Notwendigkeit, die komplexe Entwicklung der Abbaupositionen und der damit verbundenen induzierten Spannungsänderungen der Gesteinsmasse neu vorzulegen. Die Integration der seismischen Tätigkeit mit einem numerischen Modell erfordert flexible und effiziente Lösungsschemata, in denen sowohl Schäden ausserhalb des Riffs als auch Verwerfungen großen Ausmaßes effektiv dargestellt werden. Ein neuer Vorstoß wird untersucht in welchem die Strossenschliessung und Schneisenvariablen unter Verwendung des Schätzwertes der kleinsten quadratischen Abweichungen (Gaussscher Schätzwert) gefunden werden. Einige Vorteile dieser Annäherung im Vergleich zu der traditionellen Element-basierenden Tessellation sind identifiziert. Gleichzeitig werden Unzulänglichkeiten dieser Methode vermerkt, wenn die Verschiebungsdiskoniuitätsvariable durch eine polynomische Formfunktion angepaßt wird. Schwierigkeiten und mögliche Lösungen zur Formfunktionsformulierung nahe Exkavationsrändern werden besprochen.

"In mineral resource evaluations, geostatistical methods known as global change of support allow prediction of the theoretical histogram and gradetonnage curves prior to interpolations or simulations of grades. Two methods commonly used by professionals to guide the choice of interpolation parameters and assess results are the discrete Gaussian model (DGM) and the indirect lognormal correction (IndLog). These models rely upon an estimate of the dispersion variance of the blocks, which is derived by numerical integration of the variogram model over a discretized block. Due to difficulties in obtaining well-formed traditional experimental variograms (especially in the presence of outliers and limited clustered data), many professionals prefer to use ‘normalized’ variograms such as correlogram (non-ergodic variogram), pairwise-relative, or variogram of the normal score transform. A series of simulations with different grade distributions and variogram models are used to assess the performances and robustness of the various variogram estimators with respect to the DGM and IndLog global change of support. Our results show that the traditional variogram, the correlogram, and normal score variogram have better performances, compared to pairwise, for both DGM and IndLog. Moreover, DGM provided better results than IndLog for the grade distributions that are not strictly lognormal. These findings provide valuable guides for geostatistics practitioners. IntroductionWhen reporting resource estimates,practitioners are required to follow generalstandards described in the NI43-101 (CIMguidelines), JORC, or SAMREC codes. One cangenerally recognize three main parts directlyrelated to the block model:•,Pre-processing: exploratory data analysis (EDA), domaining, capping, compositing, declustering, variography•,Processing: block size, neighbourhood, interpolation types (linear or nonlinear)•,Post-processing: classification, reporting.Pre-processing aims to simplify and strengthen the processing step. Ideally, domaining, capping. and compositing is aimed at defining a single homogenous population. During the processing phase, a common practice is to use a block size corresponding to the planned selective mining unit (SMU). In most precious metal deposits (gold, notably), the SMU size is frequently smaller than the recommended half data spacing (Journel and Huijbregts 1978), resulting in high estimation variance and either a high degree of smoothing if the regression slope is managed or a high degree of conditional bias if it is not. Most actual resource estimates are made using block sizes between one-quarter to one-sixth of the average data spacing, sometimes even smaller. In addition to the block size, the interpolation choices for the neighbourhood selection and interpolator (e.g. inverse distance (ID) or ordinary kriging) are often based on the Qualified Person’s (the QP) experience and some basic validation plots that often do not consider the conditional bias (e.g. trends or SWATHs plots, which are designed to compare two sets of population using a one-dimensional graph)."

INFACON is of special significance to people in South Africa who are interested in ferro-alloys, because it was in South Africa that the idea of regular international congresses on ferro-alloys was conceived and developed. INFACON 74, the first-ever such congress, was held in Johannesburg from 22nd to 26th April, 1974, being organized by the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the National Institute for Metallurgy, and the Ferro Alloy Producers' Association of South Africa. Spiral concentrators are widely applied to beneficiate commodities such as Cr2O3, mineral sands, and ferrochrome. The application of spirals for heavy minerals has been limited to a feed top size of 1 mm. At particle sizes larger than this, friction retards heavy particles and the particles' primary velocity approaches zero, resulting in a solids build-up, therefore inhibiting further separation. Recently, a new Multotec SC25 spiral model was introduced to the industry, which aids in beneficiating particles of up to 3 mm, with successes having been demonstrated in ferrochrome slag and titanium-bearing minerals. This spiral also has potential in electronic waste applications. This paper examines the applicability of the SC25 spiral in coarse Cr2O3 recovery. This stems from the fact that junior chrome miners tend to discard particles larger than 1 mm as they neither have milling nor dense media circuits. Also, alluvial chrome miners discard +1 mm even though this size fraction contains recoverable and liberated Cr2O3. The SC25 spiral has shown better Cr2O3 separation efficiencies than the SC21 model and with higher SiO2 rejection at saleable grades, thus providing an additional revenue stream specifically for the coarser (+820 μm) size fractions. On 24th November, 1982, Mr L. W. P. van den Bosch was inducted as the President for 1982/1983 of the Associated Scientific and Technical Societies of South Africa, which represents more than 40 scientific, professional, and technical bodies. Lynne Wilson Pearson van den Bosch was born at Senekal in the Orange Free State on 11th February, 1921. He was educated at the Hoer Volkskool, Heidelberg, and the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained the B.sc. degree in mining engineering.

The practice of leaving barrier pillars between adjacent longwall panels at The Durban Navigation Collieries (Pty) Ltd (Dumacol) has resulted in a considerable loss of coal reserves. Dumacol has now modified the layout of its longwall panels to allow the concurrent mining of barri9f pillars and the extraction of the longwalls. The Implementation of the new panel layout has increased the percentage extraction of reserves and will result in an extension in the life of the mine. The method of extracting barrier pillars between adjacent longwall panels is described in this paper.

The metallurgical response of a difficult to treat coal and an easy to treat coal orebody were investigated in terms of the coal yield and the coal quality in a basic coal recovery flowsheet. The purpose of this paper is to show trends and derive principles for the treatment of different coal types. This investigation entailed using the LIMN simulator to simulate the metallurgical response by varying the plant operational parameters. The controllable plant variables investigated were: ?Cyclone size ?Screen and hydro-cyclone cut points ?Medium cut density ?Feed particle size distribution.

Turbulence in stirred tank flotation vessels determines the bulk transport of particles and has an important role in particle-bubble collisions necessary for attachment. Positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) produces quantitative measurements of the kinematic motion of different particle classes inside flotation vessels. This paper presents flow profiles of the vessel, residence time distributions, flow profiles through the mesh and macroturbulent kinetic energy distributions as experienced by valuable (hydrophobic) mineral particles in a laboratory scale flotation vessel. The results highlight the impact of the rotor-stator design and a retrofit mesh modification at the upper part of the vessel which improve recovery by decreasing turbulence in the quiescent zone and at the interface. In the mining and metals industry, business strategy demands that leaders extract more from any set of capital assets. This improvement is achieved through a combination of continuous improvement and upgrading of the assets. Continuous Improvement involves a series of incremental changes in the workplace to stabilize the process, remove waste, and test the limits of process capability. Enhanced Technology involves the replacement of an existing as set with a different process or equipment, to achieve a similar function in a more efficient and effective manner. The paper compares and contrasts the two methodologies and outlines the key business considerations which dictate how and when to select one or other improvement method. The paper also addresses the implications for these two improvement methods for those undertaking R&D in support of the mining and metals business.

Probabilistic methods for assessing the reliability of engineering systems in mining are the way of the future. So agreed the delegates of a recent short course on the subject, entitled 'Reliability-based Approach in Mining engineering Design'. This was a very successful five-day technical course sponsored by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and held at Mintek from 7th to 11th March, 1988. The main lecturer for the course was Milton E. Har, Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the School for Civil Engineering of Purdue University, Indiana, USA. Professor Har was ably assisted by Dr Dirk van Zyl, a former student. Science quiz Teams of pupils from 37 schools within a radius of 12 kilometres of the Council for Mineral Technology (Mintek) competed in a science quiz held by Mintek at its headquarters in Randburg on Tuesday, June 7th, 1988.

"Penetration of matte into tap-hole bricks causes detrimental refractory wear, which can lead to furnace breakouts. The ability of the tap-hole clay to form a protective layer on the brick, thereby limiting matte penetration was investigated by examining the interaction between platinum group metal (PGM) matte, tap-hole clay, and alumina-chrome refractory bricks on a laboratory scale.Samples containing clay and brick as well as samples containing clay, brick, and matte were heated to different temperatures to establish the clay-brick interaction and the extent of matte penetration. The greatest degree of physical contact between the brick and clay was achieved at curing temperatures of 600°C. Poor clay-brick contact was observed in the sample that was heated to 900°C.Matte displaced the clay in the clay-brick-matte sample that was heated to 1350°C, with significant matte penetration into the brick. Less matte penetration was observed when the clay-brick-matte sample was heated to 1500°C. Less matte penetration was also observed in the claybrick- matte sample in which the clay and brick were pre-baked at 800°C, and the sample then reacted with matte at 1350°C. IntroductionFloatation concentrate from ore from the eastern Bushveld Complex of South Africa, specifically the Platreef, Merensky, and UG2 reefs, forms the feed to the Polokwane platinum smelter (Hundermark, De Villiers, and Ndlovu, 2006). The ore from the UG2 Reef has a high chromite content, which requires high operating temperatures (1500–1700°C) to avoid chromium spinel build-up in the furnace hearth. These high operating temperatures lead to matte superheats in the vicinity of 500– 600°C, which put increased demands on the refractory materials (Nelson et al., 2005).Upon tapping, the matte moves through the tap-hole, which consists of an aluminachrome refractory brick-lined tapping channel (Hundermark, De Villiers, and Ndlovu, 2006). The flow of molten matte is stopped by the injection of tap-hole clay to form a plug in the tap-hole. The tap-hole clay hardens and strengthens during curing to obtain the required hardness and refractoriness against penetration, corrosion and erosion (Nelson and Hundermark, 2014)."

Treatment of tailings is an integral component of mineral processing. Tailings with a high clay content are a challenge for the mineral processing industry; e.g. the clay slimes produced from production of phosphate in the mid-western United States and the fine tailings produced from oil sands production in western Canada. Dispersants are a commonly used process aid, but their impact on the structure and settling properties of high clay content tailings is not well understood. The paper describes the changes in composition and bitumen release that occur when mature fine tailings (MFT) are treated with a polymeric dispersant (lignosulfonate.) Synchrotron-source computed tomography (CT) was used to obtain high-resolution 3D images of samples prepared at varying dosages of dispersant. The CT method permits a powerful visualisation of the internal structure and composition of the samples. These insights will enhance our understanding of the structural characteristics of mineral tailings relevant to solid-liquid separation by flocculation and thickening. (Visitor) The significance of ;n situ tests on large coal specimens is briefly reviewed. Tests aimed at obtaining complete stress-strain characteristics of large coal specimens with high width-to-height ratios are described. A formula for the relationship between strength and width-to-height ratios of coal pillars is proposed, and the influence of width to- height ratios on the deformation characteristics of pillars is discussed.

Sixteenth to seventeenth century Kalanga miners dug a series of sub-vertical shafts into a 10 to 30 m wide zone of copper ore at the Thakadu Mine near Matsitama, Botswana. They went down at least 6 m in search of thick malachite veins. The host rock was hand 'cobbed' to remove the veins, which were then smelted nearby in small bowl furnaces. Evidently, the furnaces lacked clay superstructures, since a simple pit was sufficient to smelt the almost pure malachite. The copper bloom was probably refined in villages further away.

Computerisation of all aspects of these fields of endeavour has come to be seen as essential for complete integration with other mining orientated disciplines. Release 1 .l. of the Anglo American system of mineral estates management has been tested and is in the process of being implemented at several Anglo American Gold Division mines.

The complexity of modem open pit load-haul-dump systems is described, and the need for realistic working models is pointed out. Both standard and probabilistic simulation procedures are discussed, probabilistic simulation being indicated as the more powerful and practical technique. Acquisition of the necessary pit operating data required for simulator construction and general modelling procedures are described. Finally, results from a typical open pit simulator are used to indicate the scope of the technique.

Bubbles play a vital role in flotation, and their properties directly affect the flotation performance. Xanthates are one of the major collectors used in sulphide mineral flotation. It is often believed that their main function is to render the desired mineral surface hydrophobic, which is essential for the mineral particles to attach to air bubbles. This paper takes a systematic approach to assess the influence of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) at the air–liquid phase and its interaction with the frother in the concentration of range 10–5×104 ppm. Bubble size was measured in a laboratory flotation cell using a photographic technique and the stability of bubbles was quantified in terms of coalescence time -, the time required for a bubble pair produced at adjacent capillaries to merge into a single bubble. Bubble size reduction of up to 26% was observed with increasing PAX concentration in the cell. The bubble coalescence experiments using PAX only showed that the bubbles coalesced quickly at lower concentrations (10–50 ppm), but they stayed extremely stable at higher concentrations (1×102–1×104 ppm). Further experiments were carried out where the concentration of PAX was fixed at 1 ppm and 4- Methyl-2-pentanol (MIBC) concentration was varied. The synergetic action of PAX and MIBC significantly improved the stability of bubbles in the mixed system, and is even compatible with a stronger frother. The results strongly suggest that the role of PAX at the air–liquid phase should be considered in the practice of sulphide flotation. Keywords: Bubble size, bubble coalescence, PAX, bubble stability

The case for national research in mineral processing PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS given by R. E. Robinson*, Ph.D., B.Sc. (Eng.) (Wits.) Some of you have only raised your eyebrows, some have made tactful comments, and a few of you have been fairly outspoken, but all of you in industry are concerned at the high level of State expenditure by bodies such as the National Institute for Metallurgy. The case for a national research organization in mineral processing is not clear-cut and in fairness I must present both cases - for and against. Competition for student members Each year the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy offers a prize (or prizes should the entries warrant it) of up to Rl00 for the best paper or dissertation on a topic appropriate to the interests of the Institute.

Permitted explosives in South Africa are those explosives approved by the relevant State authority for use in fiery coal mines. The main tests that an explosive must pass for this approval are the gallery tests derived from the Buxton (U.K.) classification. These tests are described briefly. In addition, the safety of permitted explosives is affected by their ability to deflagrate, and to produce a naked flame after blasting, rather than to detonate fully. Tests done on this phenomenon are discussed. A further potential hazard of explosives is after-blast fume. The testing and behaviour of several permitted explosives in this respect are covered, both in the laboratory and in the field. Performance testing of permitted explosives, specifically the double-pipe, underwater, and ballistic mortar tests, and their relationship to field use, are considered in some detail. The application of traditional and new tests to permitted explosives leads to guidelines for the safe and efficient formulation and use of these products.
