Ancillary smelter operations and sulphuric acid manufacture at Impala Platinum Limited by R. P. PLASKET. Pr. Eng.. M.Sc. (Chem. Tech.). Natal (Fellow) and D. A. IRELAND. Pr. Eng.. B.Sc. (Chem. Tech.). Natal (Member) The de-watering, spray drying, and converter operations at Impala are described, aspects that may be new to the minerals industry in South Africa being elaborated. Air-pollution control necessitated the installation of a sulphuric acid plant to limit the emission of sulphur dioxide to the atmosphere. Closer control of the smelting and converting operations was required for successful operation of the acid plant on the inherently Iow and varied concentration of feed gas from converter blowing. Approximately 82 per cent of the sulphur entering the smelter is converted to sulphur dioxide, of which 67 per cent is fed into the sulphuric acid plant.

The reassessment of coal reserves has become a matter of urgency and has come as a result of the present situation of the industry, in the context of globalized coal economies, as well as new mining legislation and the advantages and difficulties of domestic coal suppliers. The de Jager report concerning coal reserves, released twenty years ago, can no longer be used as an estimate for accurately forecasting South Africa’s future coal production. The new reserve and resource study will promote the diversification of energy sources and provide a clearer view of the future of coal mining in the country. With plans to increase South Africa’s coal export capacity to approximately 84 million tons by 2005, it is uncertain whether the country really has sufficient reserves to meet this expansion, as well as satisfy the projected increase in inland demand. The face of South Africa’s coal industry and by association, the economy of our coal-dependent country, are both set to change. This is mainly due to factors such as the demise of most of the large collieries over the last approximately twenty years, growing numbers of economic empowerment producers, the emergence of strong competition in the export market, the dawn of Clean Coal Technologies (CCTs) and the Kyoto Protocol The paper will attempt to dispel some of the current myths about coalfields and reserves and highlight potential areas of high quality coal reserves, available mainly to new entrants in the industry. Equipment selection in mining operations is an important issue, and also difficult to solve in multiple criteria environments. The paper in question has aimed to develop computer software for solving equipment selection problems in mining. In their paper, Basçetin et al. have analysed two case study problems related to open pit and underground mining method selection. By using Yager?s method1, the authors have selected 18 different criteria in the first case study and 21 criteria in the second case study. However, as emphasized by Ozdemir2, in pair wise comparison matrices the appropriate number of criteria should be seven as the maximum, from the point view of validation, consistency and redundancy. In cases where there are more than seven criteria to be handled, it is suggested that the criteria should be clustered and then the maximum number of clusters and subcriteria of every cluster should be limited to seven4.

Professor R. P. Plewman graduated with a B.Sc. in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand in 1943, after which he had two years of military service. Mr P. W. J. van Rensburg attended St Andrew's College in Grahamstown before proceeding to the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a B.Sc. (Eng.) degree cum laude in mining and metal. lurgy at the end of 1942 and was awarded the Chamber of Mines Scholarship and Gold Medal. Dr M. G. Atmore, Deputy Technical Director of the Anglo American Corporation of South Mrica, is also Manpower and Education Adviser to the Chamber of Mines of South Mrica and a Visiting Professor at the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London. Mr D. A. Vi1joen attended Queen's College, Queenstown, and then Rhodes University, where he gained a diploma in chemistry and a B. Comm. degree. Mr B. E. Protheroe, C.Eng., obtained a degree in Physical Metallurgy at University College, Cardiff, and an M.sc. in corrosion science from Swansea University. Mr N. J. Devine holds a B.Sc. in Metallurgical Engineering and a G.DE Mining Engineering, both from the University of the Witwatersrand. Dr Oskar Steffen graduated as a civil engineer at the University of the Witwatersrand in 1961, and obtained his master's degree in 1963.

Since the early 1990s the underground mining industry has embarked on a vigorous program of improving process and eliminating costs. A leading development in this program has been the implementation of leaky feeder radio systems as an enabling infrastructure for future automation. El-Equip Inc. has led this development with more than 175 mines implementing mine-wide radio infrastructures for voice and data. In this paper, we describe the implementation of a digital radio network which supports existing installations through to an automation infrastructure employing full digital cellular communications with mobile video roaming capabilities. We outline the evolutionary path from existing low speed data communications links through to 155 Mbps and beyond.

The incorporation of individual cooling in a compressed-oxygen closed-circuit breathing apparatus by E. SHVARTZ, M.Sc. (U.C.L.A.), Ph.D. (U.S.C.) (Visitor) and N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow) A conventional compressed-oxygen breathing apparatus, which did not include provisions for dehumidification of the inspired air at high environmental temperatures, was tested at these temperatures with and without conductive cooling in the form of 2 kg of pre-frozen ice placed inside the breathing bag of the apparatus. The pre-frozen ice provided conductive cooling of the soda lime and of the chest and abdomen of the subject, who performed moderate work at 50,1 "c. Without cooling, the subject was exhausted after 35 minutes because of a wet-bulb temperature of the inspired air of 46"c. With cooling, the subject finished 2 hours of work. This was possible by keeping the soda lime at a relatively Iow temperature, which resulted in a wet-bulb temperature of the inspired air of only 42 °C after 2 hours, and by conductive cooling of the chest, which resulted in the maintenance of a relatively Iow heart rate and rectal temperature.

The structural age of the capital mining machinery, representing a part of the system of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia, has been dictated by the initiation and development of open pit coal mines. For example, the oldest bucket wheel excavators were installed some thirty-four years ago, and the average life of the relevant machinery exceeds twenty-two years. Operation of both capital equipment and machinery has direct effects on economic and business activities of open pit mines, and consequently forced us to make a decision and study thoroughly the problem of establishing the optimum exploitation life of capital mining equipment at the open pit coal mines of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia. The aim of this paper is to define and discuss the relative problems as well as to find out the possible solutions and establish the methodology for estimating the optimum exploitation life of machinery. The study was successfully carried out by a team of scientists engaged from and coordinated by the Department of Computer Science of the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper presents the key observations covering the subject problem. Pyrometallurgy has played a very important role in southern Africa for at least four centuries. It continues to do so, and recent years have seen many exciting developments in pyrometallurgical technology. The wonderfully diverse rich mineral deposits in this area of the world have provided some unique opportunities for industrial processes to be established. The ?Southern African Pyrometallurgy 2006? conference was set up to showcase southern African pyrometallurgical operations, and to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas between people working at various types of smelters. Papers have been obtained from a wide variety of pyrometallurgical plants in southern Africa. These descriptions of plant operations (as well as some history, and highlights of current work) will provide useful reference information for some time to come. Contributions are also included from universities, research organizations, and engineering companies, so that the full spectrum of pyrometallurgical activities can be covered. The plant descriptions will be published on a website, where they can be updated as and when required, with the eventual goal of having a description of every smelter in the region. The conference venue was selected to be the 'Cradle of Humankind' world heritage area, about 40 km from Johannesburg. Not only does this keep the conference within easy reach of the city and yet far enough out into the countryside to allow people to focus on the conference, it is also within easy reach of many pyrometallurgical plants. There is a particular significance to the choice of location, in that the Swartkrans area close to the Sterkfontein Caves is the site of the earliest evidence of the deliberate controlled use of fire by human beings (about 1.3 million years ago), and this is obviously a necessary precursor to pyrometallurgy. The area also lends itself to a very wide range of outdoor, social, and cultural activities to supplement the technical content of the programme. It is hoped that activities such as a hot air balloon safari and visits to the world-renowned Sterkfontein Caves and Wonder Cave will help to make the conference a memorable one for those able to attend. I trust that the ongoing value of the papers and presentations will make all the hard work of the many contributors most worthwhile.

With support from the Australian mining industry and the Federal Government, three Australian universities are collaboratively developing flexible-format, web-based course content and delivery in rock mechanics for undergraduate mining engineering students. This paper describes the educational philosophy behind the development and summarises other salient features of the Program. Mine planning and scheduling is based on using a geological model for the deposit. Blocks are used to discretize the deposit into mineable volumes where grade values are assigned. Traditional estimation techniques such as kriging or inverse distance weighting are frequently used for this task where an interpolated value is calculated within a discrete volume. This group of block grades is the input for sequence optimizers, which base their decision on the economical value of a given block. Ultimately, the economical value of a block depends on its grade, making mine sequencing sensitive to all estimated values. If one looks to a block not as a single grade but as a set of equally possible grades, its economical value will change as different grades can be assigned to it. Stochastic simulation is known to provide the tools to assess grade variability, which makes it possible to generate equally probable values in a block. Different grade block models can thus be built and multiple sequencing alternatives are observed by running the optimizer for these distinct inputs. The results demonstrate that the methodology is adequate for risk assessment and proves to be useful for mining project sensitivity analyses. Differences in the project net present value showed that there is little difference between the two simulation methodologies (sequential Gaussian simulation and sequential indicator simulation) applied. There are practical indications that flotation recovery of palladium bismuth tellurides is poor. This work tested whether this can be caused by a lack of interaction of the collector with the telluride. Impedance measurements, voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy were performed to determine the interaction of dithiocarbonate collectors (KEX) with Pd-Bi-Te. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential tobe higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction; hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy did indicate the presence of bulk diethyl dixanthogen on the surface. Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen, indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. As a result, the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and a lack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for low PGM recoveries experienced. A finite element model of a 5 m radius DC arc ilmenite furnace in idling mode was used to test the notion that the slag solidifies when it comes in to contact with colder pig iron, thus constituting the initial step in the formation of solid slag at the slag-pig iron interface. It was found that a slag that is 150°C hotter than the pig iron does not solidify at the interface. The 150°C temperature difference between the slag and pig iron is a result of solid slag at the slag-pig iron interface, not the other way around as suggested in the literature. Calculations show that the thickness of the frozen slag at the slag-pig iron interface is 1.7 cm for the furnace used. It is proposed that slag solidification begins with the slow co-current flow of molten slag and pig iron in the outer parts of the furnace. This provides enough time for molten slag to interact with molten pig iron without solidifying. As the reduction products form due to reduction of the slag by carbon in the pig iron, the slag solidifies. This approach negates the need for the slag to solidify by merely coming into contact with an inherently colder pig iron. Making use of a low thermal contact conductance between the slag and pig iron was found to be sufficient to numerically capture the presence of solid slag at the slag-pig iron interface and to preserve the 150C difference between the slag and pig iron phase.

RMR, Rock Mass Rating, is one of the famous rock classifications. However, RMR was proposed empirically and absolutely depends on the experience of engineer. Therefore, engineering verification is needed for RMR system itself. In this study, the factor analysis and the multiple regressions were performed in order to evaluate the validity of rating factor of RMR. Also numerical analysis was carried out using the FLAC based on Taguchi method, a kind of robust designs, in order to examine the support of tunnel corresponding to the revaluated RMR. As the result of the analysis new RMR was proposed with five minimized factors of intact rock strength, RQD, spacing, persistence and roughness of discontinuities. RMR est un des procédés de la classification du roc qui sont généralement utilisés. Mais RMR s'appuie sur l'expérience et se absolument soumet à l'expérience d'ingénieur. Il est donc nécessaire de vér- ifier techniquement sur le système de RMR. Dans cet étude, on met à exécution l'analyse du facteur et la régression multiple pour évaluer la convenance de la cause de classification de RMR. De même, pour évaluer le support du tunnel selon RMR réestimé, on a exécuté l'analyse de la valeur numérique par FLAC qui se base sur la lois de Taguchi, laquelle est une sorte de système du plan robuste. Selon le résultat de la régression multiple, il est proposé de nouvel RMR à partir de l’intensité de roc intact, RQD, l'espacement, la persistance et la rugosité RMR ist eine der weit benutzten klassifikationen fuer die felsenstuecke. Da aber RMR erfahrungs- maessig ist und ueberwiegend von der persoenlichen Erfahrung eines Ingenieurs entschieden ist, ist es mit Sicherheit notwendig, das RMR-system selbst technisch zu ueberpruefen. In diesem studium waren die faktorenanalyse und mehrfachregressionanalyse durchgefuehrt, um die gerechtigkeit der klassifikationenfaktoren von RMR zu bewerten. Ferner war noch eine numerische analyse mit ben- utzung von FLAC aufgrund der Taguchi-methode, eine art technik der robust design, eingefuehrt, um die tunnelstuetze infolge der neubewertung von RMR unterzusuchen. Gemaess der mehrfach regression analyse wurde eine neue RMR, die sich aus 5-eingeschraenkten faktoren wie intact rock strength, RQD, spacing, persistence und roughness von discontinuities zusammensetzen, in vorsch- lag gebracht

The challenge of leadership is to change the worker’s poor perception of safety to an excited, empowered, valued employee who is continuously committed to the achievement of high levels of health, safety and conformance – the challenge therefore is to transform from within. Any work force needs a set of behavioural rules which work for it – including safety rules and critical safety behaviours, which are accepted through involvement leadership, encouragement and support.

When stress wave propagates through fractured rock masses, the wave will be slowed and attenuated due to the presence of these fractures. If the amplitude of stress wave is large enough to mobilize nonlinear deformation of these fractures, they will present different effects on one-dimensional P-wave propagation compared with those of linear deformational fractures. The static BB model is adopted to describe the nonlinear deformational behavior. Method of characteristics combined with displacement discontinuity theory is used to build analytical solutions of wave particle velocities and wave stresses. These equations are numerically solved with sufficient accuracy.

In view of the singleness of traditional methods about international petroleum (Brant) price forecast, ten main factors that affect international petroleum price are fully analysed. Based on time series method and multivariate linear regression method, the simulation model with the theory and idea of system simulation is firstly established. And this forecasting system realizes visual operation under the environment of MATLAB/SIMULINK. So this article tries a new way for further exploring petroleum price’s running law and guiding its forecasting practice. The Unki Platinum Mines concentrator, employing an MF2 circuit configuration which includes fully-autogenous primary milling of run-of-mine (ROM) ore, was commissioned in November 2010. The project was Anglo American Platinum?s first PGM concentrator in Zimbabwe and would form a significant contribution to the group?s platinum production. The project financials demonstrated that the project was operating-cost sensitive. After reviewing the metallurgical testwork, mineralogical examinations, and the history of similar operations, it became apparent that the Unki ore characteristics rendered it amenable to autogenous milling. The primary ball mill, structurally designed for 30 per cent steel load, could be operated at the required initial phase throughput with fully-autogenous primary milling, realizing savings in both power requirements and grinding media consumption. The original mill sizing had been done with fully-autogenous milling in mind, but allowing for flexibility and mitigation in case of varied mining fragmentation. Since attaining steady state, target grinds have been achieved. This paper looks at the Unki ore characterization programme, design considerations, and the operational and control philosophy for a successful comminution circuit, and discusses the design to produce a flexible, low opex, mitigated comminution and overall MF2 flowsheet that is easily expanded in line with the potential for optimum exploitation of the orebody.
