A catalog of the maps that have been microfilmed in the Eastern Middle anthracite field--the first area to be covered in the program--is presented. This information circular documents the status of a laser-based guidance system to track and control the tramming maneuvers of a continuous mining machine. The work is part of a multiple project effort at the U.S. Bureau of Mines to develop technology for computer-assisted mining systems. The system includes stationary offboard laser-scanning sensors that report the angular coordinates of retroreflective targets on the mining machine. A microcomputer system processes the angular coordinates, determines position and heading, handles requests for data, and controls tram maneuvers of a continuous mining machine. This report describes the hardware for the sensor and computer systems and the software algorithms for continuous miner position and heading determination, closed-loop tramming, and data request handling. Improvements made to the system since previous documentation include the rewriting of the software on a stand-alone real-time microcomputer system, the implementation of real-time programming techniques, the use of a new version of the laser sensor, and the design and development of explosion-proof enclosures for the lasers and corresponding power supply.

A survey of firefighting facilities and practices in coal mines conducted by the Bureau of Mines3/ showed such variations in equipment and apparent attitude toward fire protection that a comparison with other industry seemed advisable. Although other industry is confined generally to surface operations and the hazards probably are not as great, the same general methods of extinguishment are employed, so that the cost and protection at least should be comparable. An investigation of industry other than mines revealed a generally greater emphasis placed on fire-combating equipment, fire-brigade training, fire-fighting facility inspection, and fire-hazard elimination, as well as a greater average expenditure for fire protection.

Investigations for safety of electrically operated mine equipment, safety lamps, and gas detectors are made at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station in accordance with published regulations termed "schedules." These schedules are revised from time to time, not only to keep in step with the progress of the industry, but also to permit much freedom of design as possible without lowering standards of safety. The Act of Congress authorizing the establishment of the United States Bureau of Mines became effective July 1, 1910. One of the most important duties Congress delegated to the Bureau in this Act was the study of health and safety conditions in the mineral industries. Early investigations of these conditions revealed the need of prompt Care of injured employees, as, under the difficulties inherent in their occupation, seemingly unimportant wounds if not treated promptly might become infected and cause permanent disability or even death. Many seriously injured persons brought out of mines and plants by fellow workers ignorant of approved methods of giving first aid or of safe means of transportation have been caused suffering and have had injuries accentuated to such a degree as to bring about permanent disability or death. The need of general instruction in first aid thus became apparent. BRIEF HISTORY OF FIRST-AID WORK The education of miners in the United States in first aid probably was conducted systematically first by the anthracite industry in Pennsylvania. Subsequently, first-aid training was carried on actively in Alabama and Indiana. Meanwhile, a general training campaign was carried on among industrial workers by the American Red Cross Society; when the Bureau of Mines began its nation-wide campaign of instructing employees of the mineral industries, the Red Cross turned over that part of its industrial training work to the Bureau but continued to cooperate by furnishing surgeons as judges in important first-aid contests and demonstr tions and assisted for a number of years in determining training methods.

A method for destroying the caking properties of bituminous coal was developed by the Bureau of Mines. Coal is treated in a fixed bed by heating through its plastic range under controlled temperatures in mildly oxidative atmospheres composed of inert gas and/or steam containing about 1 volume-percent oxygen. High-volatile A (hvab) and high-volatile B (hvbb) and low-volatile bituminous (lvb) coals in the size range 1/8 to 1-1/2 inches were successfully treated at 0 (atmospheric pressure) to 300 psig in static beds 6 to 18 inches deep. Conditions of treatment depended on the coal and ranged from 80 to 200 minutes at 350° to 510° C. Char produced in this manner from hvab coal was gasified with steam at 800° C and 100 psig in a fixed bed in one series of tests and in other tests was exposed to hydrogen in a dilute co current free-falling-bed system at 750° C and 3,000 psig without agglomerating.

Roasting research involving small , batch experiments was conducted to explore the use of solid reductants for converting nonmagnetic iron ore to a magnetic type . Three typical Minnesota ores were tested with one or more of the following reductants : Lignite , lignite chars , anthracite , bituminous coal , petroleum coke , peat , and pyrite . Reductive roasting was accomplished in a 3- by 4- inch externally heated rotating drum . Ore and reductant were placed in the drum and heated to a desired temperature , which was maintained for a predetermined period . Recoveries of over 90 percent of the iron in magnetic concentrates were achieved at 650 ° C , using lignite , some lignite chars , a high- volatile bituminous coal , peat , and pyrite . Pyrite is a novel reductant , which is superior to carbonaceous materials other than lignite and some chars .

The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on one synthetic and three natural sandstone samples to investigate the effects of acoustic energy on the flow of brine in porous media. Ultrasonic energy at a frequency of 20 kc per second and an intensity of 55 watts per cm2 was irradiated in the direction of the fluid flow and in the opposite direction for distances of 1/2 and 2 inches between the vibrating device and the sample face and under conditions of suppressed and nonsuppressed cavitation. Forty tests were conducted: 32 with a pressure differential of 0.64 psi across the samples, 2 with 5 psi, and 6 with 15 psi. Acoustic waves altered the rate of flow of the brine through the samples, but this effect was observed only at low differential pressures and from a practical point of view was insignificant. As a result of irradiation, however, the samples exhibited reduced permeability. This reduction was probably caused by the shifting of solid particles dislodged by the acoustic waves.

The postwar demand for insulating material such as mineral wool, in-creased in proportion to the rapid construction of new buildings, placing an enormous burden on the existing mineral-wool industry both in known sources of raw materials and in available plant facilities. In view of the increased demand on the industry, the Bureau of Mines in its Mississippi Valley Experiment Station" Rolla, Mo., undertook an investigation to aid the industry by establishing resources of raw materials through actual laboratory wool-blowing tests and by developing certain methods for evaluating the physical proper-ties of a mineral wool. As material was received from the public, laboratory-evaluation technique had to be developed, the results of which would reflect in the mineral-wool-industry standards. The methods of testing used by the mineral-wool industry, not only would have required a pilot-plant installation capable of producing a large tonnage of mineral wool, but each wool-blowing campaign would have been very expensive and necessitated considerable personnel and equipment. The present laboratory wool-blowing equipment can produce as high as eight wool-blowing campaigns a day. The nature, simplicity, and size of the physical testing equipment permit testing as small a sample of wool as 25 grams and give information as reasonably accurate as in a 40-pound bag of wool. The purpose of this report is to describe the laboratory method of production and the evaluation of the physical properties of small quantities of mineral wool. Considerable work has already been done, and the interest of the public and industry is measured in the number of samples being submitted for testing.

Mass spectrographic studies have been conducted on the positive ions and neutral species of glow discharges containing 1.0 pct S02 and 1.0 pct CO in helium. Measurements were conducted for gas pressures from 3.5 to 10.1 torr using both dc and 60-Hz ac excitation. The ion species that were observed included S+, SO+, SO+, 0+, O2+, C+, CO+, and CO2+ with lesser amounts of SO3+, (CO)2+, SCO+, and (SO?CO)+ or CS+2. Interpretation of the functional dependence of the various ionic and neutral species on pressure and applied power showed that CO reacted with the SO formed in the discharges to produce CO2 and sulfur. Deposition of elemental sulfur was observed in the plasma container.

This paper reports the results of flammability studies for methane, propane. hydrogen, and deuterium gases in air conducted by the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. Knowledge of the explosion hazards of these gases is important to the coal mining industry and to other industries that produce or use flammable gases. The experimental research was conducted in 20 L and 120 L closed explosion chambers under both quiescent and turbulent conditions, using both electric spark and pyrotechnic ignition sources. The data reported here generally confirm the data of previous investigators, but they are more comprehensive than those reported previously. The results illustrate the complications associated with buoyancy, turbulence, selective diffusion, and ignitor strength versus chamber size. Although the lower flammable limits (LFLs) are well defined for methane (CH,) and Propane (CA), the LFLs for hydrogen (HZ) and its heavier isotope deuterium (D2) are much more dependent on the limit criterion chosen. A similar behavior is observed for the upper flammable limit of propane. The data presented include lower and upper flammable limits, maximum pressures, and maximum rates of pressure rise. The rates of pressure rise, even when normalized by the cube root of the chamber volume (V 1/3), are shown to be sensitive to chamber size.

"INTRODUCTION The Ruhr coal basin is estimated to cover an area of more than 1,000 square miles. Here, the total thickness of the coal bearing formation (Carboniferous) is 10,500 feet, and drilling-hole have revealed 92 coal beds with a total thickness of 262 feet. 6/ Beds pitch from 0 to 90 degrees and about 70 percent of the wartime production came from beds that pitched less than 30 decrees. 5/For example at the Minisiter Stein mine, there are 24 minable coal beds ranging from 80 centimeters. (2 ft., 7 1/2 in.) to 250 centimeters (8 2 1/2 in.). The vertical thickness of the measures is 1,000 meters (3,200 ft.), and at this mine the deposits are covered with 150 meters (500 ft.) of surface wash. The cross section (fig, 1) at Fritz mine; Hoesch, A.G., Essen, Ruhr, is characteristic, The mines have been developed and worked to vertical depths of 2,000 to 2,500 feet by vertical shafts; main-level intervals are 500 to 700 feet apart. Haulage roads are straight, driven in rock, and centered as nearly as practical between property boundaries. Levels are sectionalized by driving crosscuts at right angles to the main haulage road on 800- to 900-foot centers. The roads are the main transportation arteries for the use of trolley or Diesel locomotives. A plan of the sixth main level (fig. 2) at the Bruchstrasse mine; Gelsenkirchener A.G., Bochum, illustrates main-level development and,sectionalizing with crosscuts. The cross section in figure 3 is that of the fourth crosscut west at the same mine."

Gypsum and gypsite, used in the manufacture of plaster and plaster products, have been mined from deposits near Acme, Hardeman County, Tex., for more than 30 years. The Certain-toed Products Corp., 120 East Lancaster St., Ardmore, Pa., operates the Acme, Tex., mine. Underground hauling was done with storage-battery and Diesel-electric-powered shuttle cars. Many mining companies and individuals have manifested interest in all types of equipment powered by Diesel or Diesel-electric units, as attested by the recent increase in use of Diesel-powered equipment in underground metal and nonmetal mines. The purpose of this paper is to describe the manner in which a storage battery-powered Joy Model 60D2 shuttle car was converted to Diesel-electric power. The conversion was made, at the instance of the operating company, by Stewart & Stevens on Services, 4801 Lemon Ave., Dallas, Tex. This is believed to be the only such converted shuttle car in use.

Four samples of Pittsburgh-bed coal, of various size consist and ash content were dewatered in a pilot-size vacuum-disk filter partially enclosed with a steam jacket. Steam fed at 2.5 to 12.5 pounds per minute reduced the moisture content of the filter cakes from 2.8 to 13.8 percentage points more than normal vacuum dewatering. Approximately 1.5 pounds of steam was required to remove 1 pound of water.

The Bureau of Mines has successfully developed and tested a machine for spraying sealant onto coal mine roof and ribs. Dry material is transported pneumatically to a water-adding nozzle designed to provide dust-free spraying while being nonplugging and self-cleaning. The machine is self-cleaning, 35 inches in height, and capable of applying l/2-inch-thick coatings at over 1,000 ft2/hr.

This paper describing the mining practice at the Spring Hill mine of the Montana Mines Corporation, Helena, Mont., is one of a series issued by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various districts. Its purpose is to summarize improved methods whereby lower costs have recently been obtained. These improvements are principally the adoption of a modified sublevel stoping method of mining the use of grizzlies underground improvements in haulage, and rage bonuses. The Sprint Hill, Trine is situated in Grizzly Gulch, 3 miles southwest of the city of Helena. Helena is on the links of the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern Railways; and the East Helena smelter of the American Smelting and Refining Co. to which the concentrates from the mine are shipped, is but 6 miles east of Helena. The mine is probing 150 to 200 tons of gold ore per day, with an underground crew of about 40 men.

This detector was devised primarily for examining the air of manholes and sewers for possible dangerous contamination with CO before workman enter those places, but dine to the simplicity of the device it may have a more general usage for examination of atmospheres which are known or suspected to be contaminated with CO. Some of the suggested uses are the examination of the air in garages, tunnels, mines, around blast furnaces, gas plants, and in the home.

The Bureau of Mines investigated (1) the effect of torsion on yield and ultimate strengths of bolts when the torsion is applied first and tensile load is applied independently of torsion and (2) various methods of increasing the tension-torque ratio and/or narrowing the data spread of the tension-torque relationship. A special torsional attachment was fabricated to attach to a universal testing machine to independently subject rock bolts to combined tensile and torsional loads. It was found that initially installed torsion is nullified during tensile loading and the tensile yield and ultimate strengths are not significantly reduced. Lubricating various components of a bolt assembly or using hardened washers will improve the tension-torque relationship during conventional installation; however, the torsional load is not nullified during this type of loading. Hence, a bolt is subjected to a combined stress throughout the loading cycle; the yield point will thus be lowered compared with the pure tensile yield if care is not taken during installation to stay below the torsional yield.
